Also, I've left an important message at the end of this chapter. It's vital that you read it!
PJ felt glad to be assisting with the autopsy of the two newest victims for the investigation. If there was one thing that he was good at, it was noticing the slightest details left on a body that could lead him and the rest of the team to who the unsub was. After all, it was what helped them to get involved with their last case. So perhaps whatever these two bodies had to say could lead them to their murderer.
At the examination room, the bodies of Cindy Hilled and Gregg Marsh were laid out on separate tables. White sheets were placed on top of them. A woman in a doctor's uniform with a clipboard in her hands was waiting for him. He figured that she must be the person in charge of the autopsies.
"You must be the FBI agent Sheriff May told me about." She told him as she stuck out her hand. "Dr. Tucker. I honestly wasn't expecting you to be so young. Especially since you have to witness something like this before."
"I've grown to handle it" he told her as he shook her hand. "But it never gets any easier."
"I feel the same way." She let go of his hand and stared sadly at the victims. "Especially if you know the person you're examining. But, that's what you get when you have a job like mine in a small town."
"I take that you knew both of these victims."
"Hilled, I didn't know well. Marsh, however, my husband and him were close. They were college roommates and went out to the local bar every Saturday night. They were almost like brothers. Never thought that he would ever be on this table."
PJ couldn't imagine what she was thinking. It was one thing if it was a total stranger that you were doing an autopsy on. But when it was someone you knew, it must be really difficult. Professor Reid always warned his students in his sessions that if a case becomes personal to you, then you must try to treat it like any other case. If you're not able to handle it or your feelings get in the way of the investigation, then you'll have to remove yourself from it.
At least he didn't know anyone from around here. Unlike Dr. Tucker, who seemed to know most of them. But he was determined to help to bring justice for all of her fallen friends.
"Think of it as helping to bring him peace" he tried to reassured her.
Dr. Tucker only nodded. "I did find that the cause of death for Marsh was a single gun shoot to the head by an 85 rifle. Although, I did see some deep wounds on his legs from an arrow."
"So, our unsub injured him before he killed him."
"Exactly."
"Did Mrs. Hilled have similar injuries by those weapons?"
She crossed her arms. "Here's what I found odd. She'd been killed by hunting arrows as well. But, from the amount of damaged those things caused on her inner organs, they were a whole different asset. Much wider than the ones used on Marsh."
PJ stared down at Marsh's body curiously. It was not common for a serial killer to use different forms of killing, unless they were experimenting with different usages. But, if this unsub is the same one from the killing spree over a year ago, wouldn't he have found his perfect form of murder by now?
"Did you write up reports for the previous autopsies from the last murders?" he asked.
Dr. Tucker handed him a full stack of folders. "Tried to put down as much details about what I saw from them. Looked over four of the bodies twice just to see if I'd missed anything."
He skimmed through each documentation regarding the victims from the last murderous spree. While most of them had been killed using a different weapon or technique than the others, he did find a similarity between them all. Each body had been found to have visible wounds that had been there right before they'd been killed. Whether it was a stab wound, from a bullet or even just from an overall beating. All told him one key detail that matched with the latest victims. These people had suffered before they'd been killed.
"You see anything suspicious?" Dr. Tucker asked.
"Yes" PJ answered with a nod. "It appears that this unsub wounded these people before he killed them."
"Why would he do that?"
"Usually, murderers do it to make their victims suffer even more. It could mean that he enjoys watching them in pain." It was a sick thing to consider. Anyone who wished to watch their victims suffer greatly before ending their lives was no mere human being. All the more reason to find this guy.
However, something about this factor did make him realize another vital detail. He took another look at the reports on Hilled and Marsh. While they'd died differently, both suffered server wounds before their deaths. It was just the same as the victims from the previous murders. That could only point to one thing. "This is the same serial killer as before" he said out loud.
Dr. Tucker was puzzled. "How can you tell?"
"All of the victims had been killed either by hunting weapons or some kind of technique that hunters use. And every single one of them had suffered before they'd been killed. The unsub is using the same style of killing as before and treating each victim similarly. It has to be the same person as the last murder spree."
"Well, that's good, right? If it's the same person as before, it can be easier to figure out who it is."
PJ shook his head with a large frown. "While, you are right about that statement. This isn't all a good sign for the citizens of this small town."
What he said was true. Since this is the same killer as before, this meant that he murdered all those people from the last spree. Considering that all of those people varied in different gender, race and age then that meant that this unsub chose his victims randomly. And if that was true, then that could mean that the whole town was in danger.
P.S. This year, Yellowstone National Park had an unexpected surprise, a white bison calf had been born in the wild. It is an extremely rare event to take place and is very sacred one at that. According to ancient prophecies, the birth of a white bison predicts that a great change will occur. This offers both a blessing and a warning from Mother Nature herself. This very rare occasion shines light that we need to begin to better care for the planet we call home as well as showing respect for the other living creatures we share our planet with. That means treating every creature as living beings rather than things for us to dominate over. We may call ourselves the superior species, but that doesn't give us the right to disregard all other life on our planet. Just because we humans can't understand other creatures, that doesn't give us the right to abuse, neglect, or murder them just for the pleasure of it. I'm not trying to lecture any of you and I'm sure most of you respect all living creatures. It's just a real shame of all the abuse towards animals that I've been seeing a lot lately. At least there are few stories about some people who go beyond to help save as many animals as they can. And if the birth of a rare white bison calf is a sign from Mother Nature, I really hope that whatever great change it predicts helps people understand to respect all that Mother Nature has, including all of her wild creatures.
