Event Ignites
Year: 1999 (June 4)
Time: 5:30 (PM)
Location: Hawaii (island of Hawaii)
It's a beautiful day here in Hawaii. The sun is shining, birds are singing, waves are crashing against the coastline, and a gentle tropical breeze fills the air. Nothing out of ordinary. That's why a small family of three has decided to take a trip to Mauna Kea for some quality time together. While Hawaii is known for its stunning sandy beaches, they're seeking a more immersive experience on the islands. The parents are particularly excited about this tour, though their daughter isn't as enthusiastic. They are not alone, because they decided to have a personal guide with them… a towering figure who, despite his imposing presence, is renowned for making every trip unforgettable.
Guide: If you look closely, you can even see Waimea Province from here, and if we get over this hill, we'll even be able to see Mauna Kea Resort.
Little girl screeches in a background*
Guide sighs and slowly turns around…*
Guide: I hope you guys aren't having trouble back there.
Mai's Dad looks with an angry stare at guide*
Mai's Dad: Oh, we surely are! Mai is being really naughty.
Mai looking annoyed…*
Mai: I'm not naughty!... Ugh! Why did I have to come? I could have waited at the resort... at the beach.
Mai's Dad says with sarcasm…*
Mai's Dad: Uhm right, we would surely leave you ALONE at the resort.
Mai's Mom: Mai, you get to see more of Hawaii than just the beach, honey. How many kids in the world do you think that get to have an experience like this?... Besides, we'll be here for the whole week. It's not like the beach is going anywhere.
Mai: Ugh! At least tell me when we're going to get there.
Guide trying to sound professional…*
Guide: One more hour, little girl…
Mai: An hour? Are you kidding me? I don't want to be on this stupid tour for that longgg.
Mai's Dad: Mai, stop being a brat. We're trying to have a good time here.
Mai: But, but...
Mai starts to look sad and ashamed…*
Mai's Mom: Mai, don't be sad… Look, I promise, when we get there, it will be the most stunning place you've ever seen, and when we get back to the resort, we can buy you that Furby toy that you wanted.
Mai: You promise?
Mai's Mom: I promise.
It might seem like her parents, especially her mom, are spoiling her, but that's far from the truth. Mai was promised that toy before, and besides, they are very good parents… loving and caring in every way.
Mai finally having a smile on her face…*
Mai: Okay... I'm sor-ry I was being mean... sorry, Mr. Kekoa.
Guide says with a happy tone…*
Guide: Apology accepted, Miss Maiiiii.
Mai giggles…*
Mai's Dad: Mai, did you even know thatthey even have a telescope tower over there.
Mai: They do?
Guide: We sure do.
Mai's Dad: If they let us use it, we might even be able to see our house or a… sea monster!
Mai's Dad sounding mysterious…*
Mai's Mom, looking with side eye at her husband and his acting skills…*
Mai's Mom: First of all, telescopes are used for looking at a sky not at OUR house and secund of all a sea monsters? The only sea monster that I know is you in the morning.
Mai: You even smell like one too, Daddy.
Mai giggles…*
Mai's Dad: Oh really? So, I'm a sea monster, huh? Well then… I'm going to EAT YOU BOTH!
Dad managed to pull Mai and his wife into a big hug, tickling them both as they tried to escape. Everyone burst into laughter, including the guide. Suddenly, the guide stopped laughing and noticed something strange. Birds began to take flight, tweeting loudly and filling the sky, as a faint, eerie sound started to emerge. While the happy family continued to laugh, oblivious to their surroundings, the guide knew something unusual was happening.
Guide looking serious*
Guide: WAIT, stay quiet! Something isn't right.
Everyone stops laughing*
Mai's Mom:What are you talking about?
At this moment, even the family notices that something is amiss. Ants are swarming from their nests, and the sounds of wildlife grow louder and more frantic. Mai grabs her father's hand tightly. The guide touches the ground, sensing a faint tremor. Suddenly, a loud, unknown roar reverberates through the air, freezing everyone in shock. The guide turns around just for him to see the earth beginning to collapse in on itself. Panic surges through him as he looks at the family and screams at the top of his lungs.
Guide:RUN!
Mai's dad doesn't waste a second. He scoops his small daughter into one arm, grabs his wife's hand with the other, and starts sprinting with them for their lives, when out of nowhere a rock the size of a car falls from the hill, almost hitting them, but luckily they dodge it. The air is thick with fear as the earth continues to collapse behind them, threatening to swallow everything in its path. Meanwhile, the guide is in full panic mode, running frantically while constantly looking over his shoulder. The ground trembles beneath his feet, and the terrifying roar grows louder. Not knowing if he'll make it, the guide screams as loud as he can.
Guide:DONT STOP RUNNING!
The ground beneath him starts to tear itself apart. In his final moments, the guide screams violently as he falls at bunch of rocks hitting his head and breaking his back as he continues to fall to his death. Mai begins to cry loudly. Her mom is screaming in terror while Dad keeps running, hoping they can make it to the other side of the mountain… Dad looks back and sees the huge cracks closing in on them. With Mai still crying her eyes out, he does the only thing that he can do for his daughter. He grabs her tightly and says with a tripling voice.
Mai's dad:I love you…
With a desperate final effort, dad throws Mai as far as he can. He then pulls his wife to him, and they both scream loudly as they fall into the darkness of the pit... Mai is airborne for what feels like an eternity before she lands hard on the ground, unmoving. The cracks have stopped miraculously, but at what cost?... Slowly, Mai opens her eyes. She's hurt, bleeding from both arms and knees, confused, and in shock from what just happened. She turns around to witness the aftermath of the tragedy: fallen trees, huge pieces of ground scattered everywhere, and a massive cliff at least 50 meters deep right in front of her, with a cloud of dust hanging ominously above it. Everything had been so loud, but now it's all quiet. Not even birds can be heard… nothing.
Mai starts to breathe heavily, overwhelmed by the chaos around her. Her breaths turn into harsh, ragged gasps as she begins to sob uncontrollably. Her body shakes as she falls to the dirty ground, inhaling the dust that still lingers in the air. Her screams pierce the silence as the harsh reality crashes down on her: her mom and dad are gone... forever.
Mai: MOMMYY
In the midst of the debris and desolation, Mai remains sprawled on the ground, unable to move or think. The pain is all-consuming, each breath. She stays like that at least for five long, agonizing minutes… her cries echoing through the eerie quiet.
Suddenly, an unfamiliar, distant sound pierces through the numbness of the dust clouds. It's growing louder, more distinct… HELICOPTERS. They slowly approach the trench, hovering just close enough to witness the aftermath of the devastation. Mai having her eyes red and swollen from crying, gazes up at them with a mixture of desperation and hope. Her heart races, each beat a painful. With all the strength she can muster, she screams desperately, her voice cracking and raw, her cries swallowed by the vast emptiness around her. The helicopters circle above, their presence a faint glimmer of hope amidst the overwhelming sorrow, as. Mai's screams rise and fall…
The trench stretched all the way to the ocean, where massive waves crashed violently against small fishing boats that were nearby, a testament to the unrelenting destruction. As the trench carved its path, it obliterated thee road, once leading around the mountain. The disaster spared no one; Mai's family was not the only victim. The trench had swallowed several cars that happened to be on that road in a wrong time on a wrong place… one of which was a bus full of people.
LOUAD SCREAMS *
The realization came too late. As the ground gave way, the air filled with the gut-wrenching sounds of metal twisting and glass shattering. People falling on each other as they try to survive. Screams and cries of pure terror. The bus, caught in the chaos, teetered on the edge before the earth finally claimed it. The horrifying sound of dozens of voices screaming, only to fade into a haunting silence as the bus plummeted deeper into the abyss. A few managed to scramble out of their vehicles including the bus, desperate to escape, but the cracks were faster… The ground beneath them split open, faster than they could run, swallowing them whole. Their final moments were filled with frantic, desperate cries, their last words...
Everything was devoured by a massive mist of dust, and then the silence began, with some cars still peeping from the depths. Chaos and ruin on a scale that left the landscape unrecognizable. A few survivors at the edge of the cliff started to call for help, trying to comprehend everything that had just happened. Some people lay on the road, crying over the loss of their loved ones, while others stood motionless, staring into nothingness.
Everything happened so quickly. What if Mai's parents had stayed at the resort with her? Would it have been different? What if the people in the cars had been just a few minutes late? After all, it was just a natural disaster… or at least, that's what they want us to believe…
The event lasted only for 6 minutes and 38 seconds…
To be continued…
