Chapter 1

Dr. Smyth's Office

What started off as a normal Wednesday morning soon turned into anything but. The newest intel that had crossed his desk this morning was shocking, to say the least. It was something he told himself he should have seen coming, or at least been on the lookout for. He wasn't sure which he was more upset about, the actual information or the fact that it seemed to happen right under his nose. Dr. Smyth stopped pacing in his office long enough to light a cigarette and toss the lighter back on his desk. As he began the stride between his desk and the wall on the other side of his office, his secretary, Olivia, returned with a file in hand.

"Sorry, that took so long, Sir."

Dr. Smyth slightly nodded his head as he took a seat behind his desk and snatched the folder from her hand.

"Here are the updated travel plans and information you asked for about Lorelai Richter. The boys down in surveillance said this was the latest information they had from Agent Higgins in East Germany."

"How old is the information", Dr. Smyth questioned rather pointedly.

"Less than 36-hours. That's the best they could get considering the current situation in East Berlin", Olivia replied.

"And what about the location of our agents stationed in East Berlin and the surrounding areas?"

Olivia reached over and turned to a new section in the folder that sat in front of Dr. Smyth.

"Here you go. Here are the current locations of all the agent's where abouts that you asked for."

"All of them?"

"With the exception of one, but we believe she is enroute back to Washington. We should know by this afternoon."

Dr. Smyth leaned back and took a drag on his cigarette, exhaling slowly as he contemplated the information that was just set before him.

"And the other information I asked you to verify?"

Olivia placed a lone piece of paper in front of Dr. Smyth.

"The information you received appears to be true. I checked with two separate sources to be sure."

"How long ago did it happen?"

Olivia leaned over the desk and pointed to the date at the top of the page. Dr. Smyth stiffened as he read this information.

"Really? That long ago? I'm not sure whether to be impressed or damned upset. It seems like someone is changing the game without informing me. Interesting. Secrets don't make friends."

Dr. Smyth stood and took another long drag on the cigarette. He closed the folder and put the lone piece of paper into his breast pocket.

"Is there anything else I can help you with right now?"

"Yes. Hold my calls. I am going to see Billy Melrose. It's time we put this plan into action."
