Note: a couple of people have commented that the statue protecting Dumbledore office is a gargoyle and not a Griffin. Looking back at the book yes in the books it was gargoyle but when I saw it in the movies it looked like a Griffin instead and thats what I based it on. So, just consider that a small change from the book to here.

Year 3: The Dementor on the Train

After saying goodbye to the Grangers, Harry, Harper, and Hermione ran through the barrier to Platform 9 and 3/4s; Neville was waiting for them on the platform with his grandmother.

"Mrs. Longbottom," Harry said, giving Augusta Longbottom a small nod.

"Harry Potter, so good to see you again," Augusta said with a smile. "Neville has told me all about last year and how you helped train him. I wanted to say thank you for looking after my grandson."

"Neville is a friend; of course, I helped him, but he is very talented on his own. If the Chamber of Secrets hadn't closed, he would have jumped in to join us," Harry said, Hermione having told him that.

"That's my boy," Augusta Longbottom said, giving Neville a pat on the back. Harry had to smile – it seemed Augusta's opinion of her grandson had changed dramatically since they had met at the end of their First Year. "But the train is about to leave. You four better go find your seats," Augusta instated. The four said their goodbyes to Neville's grandmother at this, and then dragged their cases and pets onto the coach.

The train was full as they moved to find a compartment for the four of them. It was right at the back of the train when they finally found a compartment with only one-person inside; Harry and Harper recognized him: Remus Lupin. Their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher was sleeping against the window as the four put their trunks in the compartment and got their pets settled. Both Harry and Hermione's owls gave a hoot, Lucy jumped and snuggled next to Remus, and Harper let Daisy out of her carrier to sit on Harper's lap.

"Who's he? There aren't usually adults on the train aside from the Conductor and Trolly Lady," Neville mused.

"He's our new DADA teacher. Remus Lupin," Harry said simply. "We're going to have a good Defense class this year."

"You know him?" Neville asked.

"He was my father's friend when they were in Hogwarts. Dad and mom reached out to him last year," Harry said.

There was silence for a moment, in which the train began to pull out of the station.

"So, Flamel," Neville said, and everyone had to smirk. "My gran was so happy when we were told about those apprenticeships. She signed the permission slip so fast I thought she'd ripped the parchment – and then she took me on holiday to Torquay to celebrate!"

"Torquay?" Harry and Harper asked.

"A beach resort in England," Hermione filled her American friends in.

"Oh. Nice one then, Nev," Harry chuckled.

"My mom and dad were confused but signed anyway," Hermione now admitted.

"Dad said he couldn't not sign," Harper laughed.

"What do you think he is going to teach us?" Neville asked.

"Alchemy," Hermione said as if it was obvious. "I have been studying up on it myself a little, along with remembering some muggle physics. It's honestly a great subject combining the muggle and magical world."

"Mione, remember the Flamels have been alive for a long time. They know a lot," Harry said. "We could be learning anything."

"Well, they did invent the Philosopher's Stone – and that was alchemy," Hermione pointed out her reasoning. Harry couldn't deny that one.

The four chatted for a while until the train slowed down and then came to a stop, confusing them.

"We can't be at Hogwarts already," Hermione said, going to look out the compartment door. It was then the lights in the train turned off and they realized just how dark it had gotten.

"Lumos," all the teens said together, taking out their wands. Hermione rejoined them in the seats, confused.

Harper now headed for the door of the compartment; Daisy was sitting on the chair next to Remus. As she opened the door, she jumped back as she saw two people there. "Ron, Ginny?" Harper said.

"Hey," Ron said. "We were… then the lights."

"Get in here," Harry said, and the two didn't argue as they came in. "What's going on?"

"Not a clue," Ginny said.

"Quiet!" A hoarse voice suddenly spoke; Remus had woken at last. None of them spoke.

There was a soft, crackling noise and shivering light filled the compartment, dwarfing their wand light as Remus seemed to be holding a handful of flames. They illuminated his tired, grey, face, but his eyes looked alert and weary. "Harry," he realized who was in the compartment with him, "Harper," he smiled at both before looking at the other students. "Stay where you are."

But the door slid open before Remus could even move toward it.

Standing in the doorway, illuminated by the shivering flames and wand light, was a cloaked figure that towered to the ceiling of the train carriage. Its face was completely hidden beneath its hood. Harry's eyes darted downward, and what he saw made his stomach churn: there was a hand protruding from the cloak, and it was a glistening, greyish, slimly and scabbed thing; like something dead that had decayed in water…

It was visible only for a split second. As though the creature beneath the cloak sensed Harry's gaze, the hand was suddenly withdrawn into the folds of the black material.

And then, the thing beneath the hood, which Harry could only guess was a Dementor, having never physically seen one before but read about them, drew a long slow, rattling breath, as though it was trying to suck something more than air from its surroundings.

An intense cold swept over them all. Harry felt his own breath catch in his chest. The cold went deeper than his skin – it was inside his chest…

Harry could hear screaming; he could no longer see his friends or Remus and all he could see what a flash of bright green –

"Expecto Patronum!" Remus's spell was far off and faint in Harry's ears, but a white light came from Remus's wand and hit into the Dementor, driving it away.

"Harper, are you okay?" Remus put his hands on Harper's shoulders, seeming to check if she was good.

Harper gave a nod and then pointed at Harry and Ginny – both were slumped off their seats. With a worried look, Remus picked up Harry and put him on the seat and then did the same to Ginny.

"Harry?" Remus said shaking him slightly.

"Ginny…?" Ron said shaking his sister. He was as pale as her, worried about her.

"I heard a woman scream," Harry mumbled.

"I was back in the Chamber and Tom…" Ginny added as confused as Harry, and Ron put his arms around her and brought her close. Remus had stuck his head out of the carriage door at this.

"They're gone," Remus stated, noting only scared students in their carriage now.

"What was that?" Hermione asked.

"A Dementor," Neville said his hands shaking. "I never wanted to ever see one."

"They are the guards of Azkaban Prison," Remus explained, coming back into the compartment. "They suck up all happiness and leave only misery. It seems traumatic events in your pasts has made you extra affected to them," Remus explained. "What you saw and heard; it wasn't real. It was just the Dementors bringing back the bad memories," with that, Remus went into his bag and took out a large bar of chocolate "Share that. It will make you feel better."

Harry had taken the chocolate and opened it, giving half to Ginny who blushed as her hand touched his. Lucy had jumped on the chair next to Harry licking his face. "Are all wizard prisons guarded by these Dementors?" Hermione asked as the two slowly ate their chocolates.

"No," Harry and Harper said right away.

"Dementors are rare in America," Harper explained.

"Rare almost everywhere besides Western Europe," Remus continued. "We know very little about how they came to be, but from what we understand a dark wizard long ago made them on the island that became Azkaban prison. They breed off misery and despair and have expanded since. Sometimes they leave and are caught elsewhere, but the biggest population is here."

The train started moving again. "Ah, seems we're back on track. I need to speak to the driver, excuse me…" Remus said before leaving the compartment.

The group sat in silence for a while before the compartment door opened again and all looked to see Cedric Diggory.

"Oh, hi again Harper. Have you seen Edward? I have been looking for him since the train started again to make sure he is okay," Cedric said.

"Sorry, no," Harper said giving Daisy a pet. The cat had ran into her carrier herself when the Dementor entered but had since come out and back to Harper.

"He's got to be here somewhere. Are you all okay?" Cedric asked looking at the group and noticed they seemed off.

"Had a little excitement here," Harper said. "Harry and Ginny didn't react well to the Dementor."

"Ugh, yeah I saw a couple of those. Need me to get you some chocolate?" Cedric asked.

"Our new Defense teacher took care of it," Harry said.

"Good, glad he is here. Well, I actually know the Patronus charm so if they come back, I'll be ready," Cedric smirked and gave Harper a smile before moving off to go find this brother again.

"Now what is going on there?" Harry asked giving his sister "Does Harper have a boyfriend?"

"Shut up," Harper said to her brother, blushing as Hermione gave her a smirk as well.

"Harper and Cedric sitting…." Harry started teasing his sister, making him feel better and it seemed to lighten the mood in the compartment as the other started laughing.

"Oh, go write your camp girlfriend Harry," Harper joked, back pushing Harry

"What?" Hermione asked; Harry and Harper hadn't referred to Harry having a girlfriend the entire time they were with her that summer, but the siblings continued to tease each other, while Hermione looked on in concern.

When they arrived at Hogwarts, Harry was surprised when he, Ginny, and Hermione didn't even make it to the Great Hall when Professor McGonagall found them out and bought them to her office; Madam Promfrey, the school's healer, was already waiting for the group.

"We were told you two became unwell on the train," Professor McGonagall started, addressing Harry and Ginny as Madam Promfrey started mumbling spells over them.

"It was just a bad reaction to Dementors. We're fine," Harry said. "Moony gave us chocolate."

"Moony?" Professor McGonagall frowned.

"Sorry. Professor Lupin," Harry said, having to remember to call Remus that instead of by his nickname now in school.

"I see you know our new DADA teacher," Professor McGonagall said, trying not to smirk.

"It's nice having a Defense teacher who knows what he is doing," Madam Promfrey said promptly, and Harry had to agree with the statement – their last two hadn't given him much hope for this year until he heard Moony was taking the post. "I'd like you both to spend the night in the Hospital Wing."

"No," both Harry and Ginny said together.

"We're perfectly fine," Ginny added.

"Well then, you may return to the feast," Professor McGonagall said giving Madam Promfrey a stern look letting the two leave. "Ms. Granger, stay a moment."

"Of course," Hermione, who had remained silent until now, stated as Harry paused.

"You may go, Potter," Professor McGonagall stated, and Harry had no choice but to leave the office.

"You go ahead without me," Harry instantly stated to Ginny once the two had left the office. Ginny was more than happy to run off to the Great Hall while Harry hung back as he waited for Hermione.

"Mione, what was that about?" Harry asked as Hemione left the office a few minutes later.

"Oh, just about my classes," Hermione said, a little too aloof and somewhat surprised to see Harry had waited for her.

"You mean your impossible schedule?" Harry said as the pair walked back to the Great Hall. Hermione gave a smirk but said nothing as they went to the Great Hall.

"We missed the sorting," Hermione now said, Harry noticing Ginny had made it back to their Gryffindor table by now.

"In that case let's head to the Ravenclaw table," Harry said and joined Hermione at the Ravenclaw table, giving Padma a hello. He saw Harper was still at the Slytherin table, talking to Daphne and Tracey while Neville was having a conversation with Susan and Cedric. It seemed for this meal; they weren't joining together at the moment.

Harry was fine with Hermione and the other Ravenclaws through dinner and dessert. After dessert, as expected, Professor Dumbledore stood to address the hall.

"Welcome! Welcome to another year at Hogwarts. I'd like to say a few words before we all become too befuddled by our excellent feast. First, I am pleased to welcome Professor Remus Lupin who's kindly consented to fill the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts."

Harry made sure to start clapping loudly and saw Harper at the Slytherin table joining in. Hermione had joined in, and he saw several of their friends joining in. Their excitement must have been contagious because several started clapping more than just the polite clap they usually gave. Professor Dumbledore waited for it to die down.

"Good luck, Professor. It looks like you have some students rooting for you already," Professor Dumbledore smiled, and Harry could have sworn he saw the headmaster look at him. "Now, our Care of Magical Creatures teacher, Professor Kettleburn, has decided to retire in order to spend more time with his remaining limbs. Fortunately, I am delighted to announce that his place will be taken by none other than Rubeus Hagrid!" Harry was shocked and started clapping again along with many others who loved Hagrid. Harry found himself more excited about Lupin though – he loved Hagrid, but he was also wondering if the man would be a good teacher for a subject Harry himself loved.

"Finally, I am pleased to introduce you all to Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel," Professor Dumbledore announced, and the hall went quiet at that. The Flamels were sitting at the head table and there had been talk as to why that was all through dinner. "The couple have decided to spend their last year of life passing on their knowledge to eight lucky students in this very school – two from each House. Those students have already been informed, so any requests to join them will be politely declined." There were whispers around the hall at this, and Harry and Hermione had to smirk at each other. Harry looked up and saw Harper was giving him a smirk and Neville was smiling to himself. Harry looked around, wondering who the other four were but there were no obvious tells.

"Is it you two?" Padma asked, and Hermione and Harry gave a nod. "Me too!" She was giving a smile. "My sister was upset she wasn't chosen but the two Gryffindor spots were taken already, and my parents wouldn't dare deny me this because Parvati couldn't do it."

"Yes, yes," Professor Dumbledore spoke before Harry or Hermione could answer Padma, wanting to get the hall under control. "We wish these eight lucky students well and luck, but onto a disquieting note..." Harry swore Professor Dumbledore eyes looked right at him again. "At the request of the Ministry of Magic, Hogwarts will, until further notice, play host to the Dementors of Azkaban until such a time as Sirius Black is captured," Harry literally cursed under his breath, knowing if Albus Dumbledore could have stopped them being placed here he would have – especially knowing Sirius was innocent. It meant the Ministry wasn't listening to him either about the innocence of Sirius.

"The Dementors will be stationed at every entrance to the grounds. Now, whilst I've been assured that their presence will not disrupt our day-to-day activities, a word of caution: Dementors are vicious creatures; they will not distinguish between the one they hunt and the one who gets in their way," as Professor Dumbledore said this line, Harry knew the eyes were on him and he looked over at the Slytherin table. Harper was listening well now too. "Therefore, I must warn each and every one of you to give them no reason to harm you. It is not in the nature of a Dementor to be forgiving…. but you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light." Professor Dumbledore lit a candle with the wave of his hand as he spoke, giving a smile. "Now, be careful and be alert – and enjoy your night."

-Harry Potter-

Back in the dormitory, with Daisy now asleep next to her bed, Harper went to get changed into her pajamas, putting the curtain around her bed as she did so. She took a holster off her right ankle – this wasn't for a wand but held her dagger in it, which she and Harry had asked a member of Mateo tribe to specialty make it for them.

This had been the first time she'd wore it. Until today, it had been hidden in Harry's trunk, but both knew inside Hogwarts they tended to get into trouble. Her wearing it could save their lives. She closed her eyes and felt the connection to Hogwarts herself and felt tonight in her dreams she would be talking to Hogwarts again. Hogwarts felt really happy her and Harry were back.

"Harp?" It was Tracey and Harper threw the dagger under her pillow as Tracey opened the curtain. "Got the board game? We said at dinner we'd play monopoly again."

"Yeah," Harper said, grabbing the game she had placed on her bed before getting changed.

"Flamels," Daphne said as the game was set up. "Who do you think they are teaching?"

"Me, Harry, Hermione, and Neville," Harper said instantly, deciding not to play with her two roommates.

"Seriously?" Tracey asked and Harper gave a nod. "Any idea who else?"

Before Harper could say no, her communication journal made the noise indicating she had a message. Harper opened it and saw it was from Hermione, confirming they would open the Founders' Vault book tomorrow during lunch; Neville and Harry sent back their yeses and Harper confirmed too.

'Gryffindor table for breakfast and by the way, Padma told us she's the other Ravenclaw,' Harry wrote back at this.

"Apparently Padma, but the other three are unknown," Harper said aloud, closing the book as they went to play her latest boardgame.

"Think you can ask Harry to look after my little sister?" Daphne asked; Astoria Greengrass had been sorted into Gryffindor.

"Sure," Harper said, but as she said it, they heard screaming coming from the common room – enough that they stopped their game and looked at the door to their dorm.

"What is that?" Tracey asked.

"Harper!" Someone cried, and the Slytherin Prefect came to the dorm. "We need you."

"Me?" Harper asked but got up anyway to follow them to the Common Room to see a large snake waiting for her. "Hey, you, how did you get in here?"

"You speak to me?" The snake asked, going to where Harper was. "Speaker, the boy left me here."

"What boy?" Harper asked. "Show me."

"I will," the snake said, directing Harper a certain way and Harper followed slowly. In a corner of the common room by where the males went to their dorms, hidden was a 11-year-old giggling. Harper recognized him as Edward Diggory, Cedric's little brother. She knew back in the Sorting he had been put in Slytherin.

"Really?" Harper asked as the young boy gave a jump up. "This is your snake?"

"How…. What?" Edward asked.

"Is this the boy?" Harper asked.

"Yes, my boy," the snake said and went up to Edward.

"You're… a Parselmouth?" Edward said seeming shocked.

"Put your snake away before Professor Snape comes and sees it. Even if you got permission to have a non-preapproved pet, using it to play a stupid prank is a guaranteed way to have it sent back home," Harper said as Edward picked up the snake. "And by the way, really lame prank."

"What? You can do better?" Edward said.

"I have done better," Harper said and left as Edward seemed to try to figure out if she was telling the truth or lying.

-Harry Potter-

That night Harry was dream-training with Godric.

Instead of just a training field, though, it was like they were in the mountains; Harry tripped and fell. "Not bad for a first time on an uneven surface, young heir," Godric said, helping Harry up. "Arthur and Merlin have both said you've come along way as well."

"Thanks," Harry said, taking a breath. "Look, I know you said my life is not yours to interfere with but what I am going to ask is not about my life but about my godfather's life. Is there any advice any of you can give me?"

"Ah Sirius Black… I'm truly sorry young heir, but we cannot tell you where either Black or Peter Pettigrew are. It's a mystery you will need to solve. And we have no advice on how to deal with this Ministry. Modern laws are unknown to us," Godric explained.

"What about the Dementors? Can you teach me how to deal with those? My dad knows the Patronus charm, but it unusual in America to learn it. I think my mother taught dad and there are weaker spells to deal with them in America that are not as good," Harry ranted, his mind going to the Dementor he saw on the train and the woman screaming. He had never been afraid of something so much.

"That charm was created after I lived," Godric said. "But you have other mentors in the school that could help you."

"The Flamels?" Harry asked.

"They will be great allies to you this year, but I was thinking your friend, Moony," Godric said, and Harry nearly hit himself on the head: Remus had been the one to drive away the Dementor on the train! Harry had to ask him. "Come, young heir, another round." Harry gave a smirk and held up his sword, ready to go again.

Post Chapter Note: Well, they are back in Hogwarts and year 3 is officially underway.
