Let There Be Light
Chapter 19-The Grass Is Always Greener
As they recover from events in the lake the sister's pasts are revealed when it turns out that all four of their past lives intertwine with four very different men.
The aftermath of Sam's death had a knock on effect on Paige more than she wanted to admit. Issue was she could not talk about it, she didn't know if she ever would be able to talk about it. She did not think that working through the process of her father's death was something that was going to take five minutes and she made no apology for that either. She was who she was, it was what it was.
And it was time to move on.
That was what she told herself anyway, that was what she tried to tell herself anyway.
But then there was always another demon.
And her demon was off doing…something so it was the four of them…and Leo…Leo…was…well…she wasn't sure what he was, wasn't sure weather or not he was human or a whitelighter suspended but she knew that it festered a hate that was growing in her from the inside out whenever she thought about the Elders.
The demon this time took her to the past. To the past as in the 1920s. It started with Phoebe and then it spiralled from there.
The Roaring Twenties had gotten their name from the right place Phoebe thought looking around with wide eyes. And P Bowen was a powerhouse. Phoebe liked her. Phoebe really liked her.
She liked the power that oozed from every pore in her body. She really liked the confidence and the sex appeal that too seemed to ooze out of her. She really, really liked the clothes.
When all of this was over she should really look at getting more vintage pieces. The 1920s was the area where clothes really came alive.
You know providing she was alive.
The manor had been transformed into some kind of speak-easy, it was glamorous and dangerous and the magic that had been dimmed throughout Phoebe's childhood was alive in the very wood and the very air.
And somethings never changed.
The couch was the same even down to the same positioning. The table that they had once said was an antique was here brand new. Lace decorated the table enough to cover several of Prue's Buckland pay checks.
And there was her sisters. Piper in black and an unforgiving red lipstick operating the bar and the music, Dan her husband (?) in a suit and bowtie playing the piano. Leo, Piper's lover, always Piper's lover (according to Anton) and never the husband (what that meant for the future Phoebe really could not tell) and then there was Prue taking photographs as if she was born to do it in blue with hair that really looked like it should be left in the twenties. Prue seemed to always change her hair during these trips she thought. In the past she was red, in the future she was blonde.
Interesting.
Not really but…
Interesting.
And then there was Andy.
He was not a cop in this life otherwise he would have had to shut them down (she knew enough about history to know that at least) but he was in uniform. He seemed to be Army and she realised that it had only been two years since they had come out of the First World War. Andy would have served in it.
He was sat at the table with a cocktail glass in hand chatting animatedly to other young men in uniform. She couldn't guess what his rank was but clearly he was high up if that look on the younger boys faces was anything to go by. She looked at him and saw that he was leaning a little stiff to one side and she thought that maybe he had gotten wounded in the war.
Maybe like in her future she had, had a premonition and that premonition had turned out to be wrong.
Nobody knew she supposed. But the implications of this was fascinating all the same.
He turned though as she pushed past Prue and Past-Prue gave him the same smile that future Prue did.
She turned her head to watch and she paused. There was past Paige. Her dark hair was short too but blonde which was very odd, she was dressed in dark purple and was sat in the lap of a man who pushed her off him and then they slipped up the stairs. She watched as she sipped her champagne and sighed as the man came into view.
Zankou.
Glad to see that somethings stayed the same.
Zankou caught her eye and she would have laughed at the look on his face, his eyes narrowed for a second as if he was seeing through her for a second but then he dragged his eyes away and back to Paige who pulled him up the stairs…and to make matters worse the thing that made him funny even here, even in the 1920s which was a fashion powerhouse in itself he was still dressed all in black.
She turned and noticed the blonde girl watching her, short curly blonde hair and big blue eyes dressed in a white dress her hair pierced with a feather. She followed the blonde girls eyes and then she came over.
"Aunt P?"
"Yes?"
"The man at the table would like to say hello?"
Phoebe turned and then swallowed harshly. Suddenly she felt both very hot and very cold. It was like the world had stopped as she looked at him. He had cropped dark hair and dark eyes and a smirk that suggested trouble…the kind of trouble that Phoebe loved with every inch of her. She wanted to eat this man, drink him, and more to the point she wanted to take him to bed and never let him go. She wanted to hold him down into the bed and she wanted to be with him forever and ever amen. She didn't know what do other than stare and suddenly finding out who was trying to kill her wasn't the point of this mission.
Suddenly it was him.
"What's his name?"
"Turner. He says ditch Anton and be with him which I think is highly presumptuous but also…he's really hot"
"Belinda!"
Piper's voice made her jump and she turned tearing her eyes away from Turner to see Piper coming over her face strict. She eyed Dan for a second as Piper and the girl battled it out…
Gordon…
Could it be he was Grams father?
"Go Belinda"
"Sit on it you old crow"
She sniggered into her champagne. She had no idea who this girl was but there was some Halliwell fire in her nonetheless. She took her drink and pulled away looking back at the table and she sighed.
The man was gone.
She swallowed and walked away thinking.
Yes she thought as she stepped outside.
Somethings did indeed stay the same regardless of past, present and future.
Of what that meant for her going after terrible men in both the past and the present and the future (it seemed)…she really could not say.
"Army?" Andy said with a raised eyebrow. "Well I suppose it could be worse"
"What did you think would happen?" Prue asked.
"I was thinking I could be dead" he quipped but she could see he was serious. She didn't know what to say to that because it was the truth—they still didn't know who it had been that had thrown Andy the bone that had kept him on the edge of death rather than Phoebe's premonition coming true. After all they had done nothing different.
It was a mystery and yet…
She didn't want to think on it. She didn't even want to think about thinking about it. After all, Andy was here, he was alive.
He was with her.
"What I was doing?"
"Using this camera"
It threw her completely.
If truth be told Prue had wanted to be a photographer since she had learnt what one was. She had done all the courses at school and had come out with a minor in it in college. She had loved it but if truth be told she had fell into her job at the museum by chance and then it had been Rex who had reached out to entice her with the Buckland's job. Granted that had been because he had wanted to kill her but she had been good at it and she'd had a point to prove afterwards and so she had stayed. Walking away from it and the exceptional sized check that came once a month had been the hardest thing she'd had to do in the human world in a long time.
But she had done it and it had been because she had wanted to do something for her. Her whole life she had put her sister's first. She had become Mom in the space of a day and she had never stopped. The jobs had all been so that they could keep the house and then later on so they could repair the house. She had never really stepped out and done anything that she had wanted to do career wise. But now the club was doing better and Phoebe was in school and things were beginning to look better…
And if her past self, had given her the love…
She tapped her nail against the ancient camera and thought about it.
She was still thinking about it even though they were now trying to stop Phoebe's past self, her present self and her future self from being killed.
She was still thinking about it even when they managed to do such a thing.
"What was I doing?" Paige asked her that night as she put her teabag in the mug.
"I don't know…there was defiantly artwork on the walls that was yours I can tell you that"
Paige nodded.
"I was with him wasn't I?"
"Zankou?"
"No Kit the cat, YES Zankou"
"Yes…and one of us had a child"
"Grams?"
"No…another one…Belinda…I have no idea…she was blonde though which was odd for me because I don't remember us having anyone in the family past Melinda Warren who was blonde"
Paige smiled for a little while and sipped her tea and then.
"I haven't been myself lately" she said quietly. Phoebe who had just come back from nearly dying didn't know what to say to that.
"You'll be fine" she said hollowly. "And…and at least you know right? Isn't that what you wanted?"
Paige stared at her for a second and then laughed though there was no humour in it.
"No" she said flatly. "That wasn't what I wanted, I found the man shared about ten words with him and then he chose to die. There's no other words for what he did, he knew I was there and he chose Mom…and…and I've got to think of a way to get through that…I don't want to think about what he did or what he was forced to do. I want to pretend that that day at the lake didn't happen. It's okay for the three of you, you've got some kind of closure. I just have questions"
"Maybe you can get them?"
"How"
Phoebe shrugged. She had a feeling that she shouldn't be telling her baby sister this, her wild impulsive baby sister who had fallen in love with the demon and she knew it would create more problems…Prue was going to go spare when she found out that Phoebe was even suggesting it…
But…
But she couldn't help but think of that man in the dark corner of her house watching her as if he wanted to strip her naked and take her to the floor right there and then, even now the heat of it contradicted everything and made her shiver.
She wanted that feeling back.
God when had she started dating safe men?
"Phoebe?"
"We have a spellbook upstairs Paige, and one of those spells includes calling the dead back to the land of the living even for a short time. And you're a powerful witch in your own right…work on that"
And with that she left the kitchen and her baby sister standing in half light, half darkness and thinking very hard about what the hell she should do next.
And there you go, see you next time.
Next Chapter-THE FINAL ONE OF SEASON 2-Prue is kidnapped, the sisters must make a choice, Piper and Leo cement their relationship, Prue is sick and Paige even more so as she goes to get answers out of the one person that she really needs them from.
