Hello all Storm here with…with a new story and a lot to explain. It's just been…a while since I last updated, I don't really have an excuse beyond real life has been kicking my ass left and right for the past few months.
It was hard finding the inspiration or desire to write anything at all, but I am hopefully back at it, I can't promise I'll be putting out updates every other day like I usually do, but I can promise I am still writing and now trying to get back into the groove of things and hoping that once things have settled down I'll be back to updating more frequently.
I want to thank everyone who's stuck around despite the long hiatus and that I'll try to update to the best of my abilities, and I'll start with a new story, a Naruko/House of the Dragon story.
I originally wanted to get this out before the season 2 premiere, or at least right after it, but combined with dealing with several problems, I also had to rewrite a few parts of the chapter. Now I won't spoil anything, but anyone who's read my Naruko stories knows I always do femslash pairings, but this one will be different as here I'm taking a shot at pairing Naruko with a guy…and probably some girls. I don't know, we'll see how things go.
Also I'm taking inspiration from both the show and the book, along with messing with the timeline a little to better suit the plot.
It's just an idea I've wanted to try for a while and have finally gotten around to doing it, that's all I really have to say and hope you all enjoy it. So, without further ado.
I own nothing

Screams echoed through the halls of High Tide, seat of House Velaryon, being joined by the roars of the three dragons residing on the island of Driftmark. Seasmoke, Vhagar the Queen of All Dragons and Meleys the Red Queen.
The three dragons ridden by Ser Laenor Velaryon and Lady Laena Velaryon respectively, the children of Lord Corlys Velaryon also known as the Sea Snake. As well as his wife, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen Velaryon, known as the Queen Who Never Was.
With Rhaenys being the source of the screams as she laid within hers and Corlys' chambers, surrounded by midwives, assisting her in giving birth to her third child.
It had been an unexpected, but welcome, surprise for the Lord and Lady Velaryon to be expecting another child. While Laenor and Laena were excited at the chance to have a younger sibling, assisting their mother in any way they could.
Now though the time had come for the Princess to give birth, with her husband calling for the midwives to help her. Rhaenys' excitement and joy at the chance to welcome her newest child into the world soon forgotten when the contractions hit her, having forgotten the pain of giving birth with how long it's been.
"Just keep pushing Princess, you're almost there." Said one of the midwives, only for Rhaenys to glare murderously at her.
"I am pushing you stupid cunt! What do you think I've been doing?!" Rhaenys yelled only to scream as she pushed as hard as she could, hearing Meleys roaring feeling her riders pain through their bond.
"We can see the head Princess! Just once more and it'll be done!" Assured an older midwife, not affected by Rhaenys' anger, having assisted in the birth of Laenor and Laena years ago.
'Gods I'm never doing this again!' Thought Rhaenys feeling like she's being split open, breathing heavily before gritting her teeth as she gave a final push.
Unable to deny the relief she felt at feeling her child sliding out of her, smiling when she heard the cries of the newborn.
"A girl, Princess! With quite the lungs on her too." Said the midwife as they began cleaning and wrapping the baby, while Rhaenys' smile grew at learning she had another daughter.
Not taking her eyes off her daughter for a moment, Rhaenys eagerly took her in her arms when the midwife handed her over, smiling lovingly at the squirming, wrapped bundle in her arms.
"Shh, shh, shh. You're alright darling, mother's here." Rhaenys said softly while rocking her daughter, watching as she began settling down, cooing quietly at her mother's voice.
For a moment everything else faded away for the Queen Who Never Was, leaving just her and her daughter, relishing in the feeling of holding a newborn child in her arms again. Imagining watching her grow and experience new things, her first steps, her first words, her first dragon ride. Everything she experienced with Laena and Laenor, she'll get to again.
'Now I remember why I'd do it all over again.' Rhaenys thought having never experienced a joy like that of holding her children.
Before she was pulled from her thoughts at the door opening, seeing her husband entering smiling brightly at the sight of wife and child.
"My love, never before have you looked more radiant than you do now." Said Corlys moving to sit beside Rhaenys, gazing down at his new daughter in adoration.
"Really? Because I feel like shit." Rhaenys said smiling tiredly, feeling her damp black hair clinging to her head.
"You have always been as beautiful as the day I first laid eyes on you, but you are a true vision when holding our child." Corlys stated, only for Rhaenys to roll her eyes but still smiled.
"You should know by now, flattery does nothing to help you husband." Said Rhaenys before their attention turned back to the door seeing Laena and Laenor entering next.
"Mother! We just learned, we have a sister?!" Laena asked smiling excitedly at the chance to have a baby sister.
"You do indeed, daughter. Both of you come here to greet her." Rhaenys said motioning her children to see their sister.
Stepping closer to the bed, Laenor and Laena looked down at their sister smiling at her, seeing she had the looks of Old Valyria. Fair skin, wisps of silvery-white hair and were sure her eyes would be a shade of violet. Only for them to notice something curious about her features.
"What are these markings on her face?" Laenor asked looking at her curiously along with Laena, with Rhaenys and Corlys looking as well.
Frowning in confusion when they saw three, thin marks on each of her cheeks, with Rhaenys trying to wipe them off thinking it was something stuck to her face, only for the marks to remain.
"Odd markings." Corlys muttered having never seen birthmarks like these before.
"They look like…whiskers. Like on a cat, or a fox." Said Laena smiling, believing they only made her sister more adorable.
"They'll certainly make her stand out. The Whiskered Dragon, I'm sure they'll call her." Laenor joked before the two looked at their parents.
"Mother, father what is her name?" Questioned Laenor wondering what name they had decided on.
This made Rhaenys and Corlys share a look before looking at their daughter thoughtfully.
"Truthfully, I am having trouble thinking of a name suitable for our new little one." Corlys stated thinking of several suitable Velaryon names, but felt none of them truly seemed right.
"Indeed." Said Rhaenys with a pensive expression, having considered names for both a boy and a girl.
Having thought of either Aemon or Jocelyn in honor of her parents, or Alyssa for her aunt and Meleys' previous rider, Valaena or Aerion for the Conquerors' own parents, even Visenya. Yet looking at her daughter now, Rhaenys felt none of them really would fit her.
"Well…if neither of you can think of a name, could I suggest one?" Laena asked hopefully, wanting to suggest her own name for her sister.
"What did you have in mind Laena?" Said Corlys curious of what name she thought of.
"Remember that story you used to tell me and Laenor, the one you learned during your Great Voyages? The one from Asshai?" Said Laena smiling widely, with Laenor looking at her with furrowed brows.
"You want to give our sister a boy's name?" Questioned Laenor recalling the story she's talking about, flinching slightly when Laena smacked his arm.
"It can be changed to a girl's name, you idiot. Besides it's a Valyrian word too, so it's even more fitting." Laena retorted before smiling at her sister again.
Seeing her eyes were beginning to open, showing her eyes were a bright violet color.
"What is this name Laena?" Rhaenys asked looking between her daughters, with Vhagar's rider smiling at her infant sister.
"Naruko…Naruko Velaryon."
*117 AC*
Corlys and Rhaenys soon learned their third child was…odd to say the least.
Though not in a bad way, but as she grew Naruko had shown to be rather unique, learning how to walk much sooner than most children, with her soon beginning to talk as well. Something that did bring her parents pride at how quickly she's able to learn.
With it continuing when she began her lessons with Maester Kelvyn, at least the lessons she chose to focus on. Having excelled in her lessons of High Valyrian, the histories of House Velaryon and House Targaryen, the Great Houses and history of Westeros. But for her other lessons Kelvyn was hard pressed to have Naruko stay focused.
And the less said about her lessons with her Septa the better, though her parents did find some amusement whenever Naruko managed to slip away.
When not in her lessons, the young Lady was in the company of one of her parents, either with her mother tending to Meleys or with her father when he held court. It filled the Sea Snake with pride at his daughters interest in Driftmark and its dealings.
Even more so when Naruko would ask to join him on a voyage to meet with his partners in Essos, desiring to help in any way she could on his ship. Having desired to be seen as another member of the crew, assisting in navigation, securing supplies, manning the rigging, resting in the crow's nest.
If she wasn't helping on the ship, she'd be asking her father or the crew questions about the different cities in Essos, the people, the professions, the goods they trade in. It left more than a few people stunned at how inquisitive the young girl could be. Even Corlys had wondered about some of the questions Naruko asked, but had abided and explained anything she wished to know.
Now Naruko could be found on top of High Tide's walls, looking out towards Spicetown and the wharves crowded with ships from the Free Cities and beyond. The young Velaryon looked out over them all as well as out at the sea around the island. Frowning as she looked before looking down at a journal in her hands as she began writing and drawing in it.
"Why am I not surprised to find you here, daughter." Said Corlys in High Valyrian, with Naruko not reacting to his arrival and continued writing in her journal.
"It's quiet up here, I also have a good view of Spicetown and Driftmark." Naruko replied, the Sea Snake merely hummed in response resting his hands on the battlements looking out over his land.
Turning to his youngest daughter, Corlys had no doubt she'd grow into a great beauty just as her mother and sister had. As she grew older Naruko's hair had begun growing into a mix of silver and black, much to Rhaenys' joy at one of her children inheriting her dark hair. Which also made Naruko all the more eye-catching with her unique features.
"Kepa, how are new sailors trained?" Naruko asked, making Corlys raise a brow at the odd question.
"They are trained like any other sailor, they're hired as a crewmember on a ship and instructed on what they must do." Said Corlys.
"And why would they work on a ship?" Questioned Naruko, the Sea Snake looked at her with a confused expression.
"For most they see it as a means to be paid, others seeking an adventurous life out at sea. Everyone has their own reasons for the work they do." Corlys replied, with Naruko tilting her head.
"And everyone learns the same way? Being taught by someone who's already good at the work." Naruko said, Corlys nodded in response.
"Indeed, there are also those that take apprentices to ensure their work is continued, such as Smiths who work with different metals creating armor, weapons, rings and necklaces, coins." Said Corlys before he looked at his daughter curiously.
"Why the sudden questions daughter?" Corlys asked wondering where these questions came from.
"It's just something I've thought about during my lessons with Maester Kelvyn. I asked him and he said most smallfolk don't know how to read or write. Wouldn't it be good if they did, having someone teach them to read, write, along with about sums, mathematics, everything Maesters teach. That way they'd have more opportunities for different work." Naruko said, with her father humming in thought.
"Perhaps, however Maesters are in service to Lords not the smallfolk of the Lords holding." Said Corlys thinking of the benefits of educating the smallfolk.
"But there must be plenty of Novices and Acolytes at the Citadel. What if they could be hired to teach the smallfolk?" Said Naruko, only for Corlys to laugh lightly.
"I don't think anyone at the Citadel would be willing to leave merely to share their knowledge with nothing in return." Corlys said, with the young Velaryon merely shrugging.
"You never know. Muña has an uncle that's an Archmaester, maybe he'd know if some Acolytes and Novices would be willing to come to Driftmark to instruct people, as long as they're paid." Naruko said, getting her father's attention.
"Vaegon?" Said Corlys not expecting to hear that, with how Vaegon the Dragonless had been all but forgotten by most of Westeros.
Even he had forgotten that some of King Jaehaerys' children still lived, but thinking about it did open up the possibility.
'Hm, perhaps…' Corlys thought, wondering if Rhaenys would be able to get Vaegon's help in sending Novices and Acolytes to Driftmark.
While he would need to pay them to educate the smallfolk, Corlys did see the benefits that if more smallfolk had work it would bring more coin to Driftmark. Perhaps it'd take time for such a thing to bear fruit, but he could see the long-term benefits.
"Why the sudden interest in the lives of the common people, child?" Corlys asked looking at Naruko, curious of where her sudden interest came from.
"Just thinking over all the ships that come here, what you told me about the Free Cities in Essos. The things people know and can do there that can't be done in Westeros. Artisans in Myr, Smiths in Qohor, spices and silks in Yi Ti. They all have knowledge and goods not found in Westeros, but the people that come here on ships might have knowledge they'd want to share." Said Naruko looking at her father seeing his intrigued expression.
"Let's say these people were to stay on Driftmark to teach the smallfolk? How and where would it be done?" Questioned Corlys now thinking of the possibilities.
"A large building would need to be built for them, one that anyone would be welcomed to who wishes to learn, like the Citadel, but both men and women would be allowed to learn. The basic classes would teach them how to read and write, along with classes for history, the many Great Houses, the kingdoms, then advanced classes for mathematics, sums and numbers, money and accounts. And specialized classes for those that'd want to enter into a specific profession, Healers, Smiths, Seamstresses, Sailors, Soldiers, Merchants. Not only would it allow more work to be found by the smallfolk, but I'm sure many of them would be happy to be given such an opportunity to be educated. And if we can find those from Essos skilled in professions and convince them to come to Driftmark, then that'd allow for more work and classes." Naruko explained, much to Corlys' amazement at the detail she put into this, along with the many opportunities.
"This is…certainly an ambitious idea my daughter, but I do believe it has some merit. It would take time of course, not only to find those willing to teach, but also to build a place large enough for instructors and those willing to learn." Said Corlys knowing he'd need to send many ravens, along with having Rhaenys contacting Vaegon at the Citadel to see if he'd be able to send any willing Novices and Acolytes.
"Perhaps. But the most difficult tasks offer the greatest rewards." Naruko stated, with Corlys smiling proudly at his daughter.
"Indeed they do tala, indeed they do. Perhaps you will have other thoughts you're willing to share another day." Said Corlys, the young Lady merely smiled in response.
*118 AC*
The Velaryon Household stood in Hightides courtyard, with Corlys, Rhaenys and Naruko standing at the front. The youngest Velaryon doing her best to remain composed, though had trouble stopping herself from smiling excitedly while looking up at the sky for any sign of dragons.
"Calm yourself daughter, they'll be here shortly." Rhaenys said glancing at her youngest child, making Naruko stand up straight and look forward, but still smiled.
"Sorry muña, I'm just excited! Laena's coming home after so many years, and she's bringing Baela and Rhaena with her!" Naruko said eager to see her sister again and meet her nieces for the first time.
Having only learned about them from letters Laena has sent when her twin daughters were born, with Naruko having been ecstatic to learn she was an aunt. Hoping for the chance to meet them, either with her going to Pentos or them coming here.
So, she was excited that her sister and her family were finally coming to visit, even more so Naruko was excited to see Vhagar and Caraxes the Blood Wyrm. Only having vague memories of Laena's dragon before she left and married Daemon Targaryen, the Rogue Prince. While Caraxes had been her grandsires mount before being claimed by Daemon, making it another dragon Naruko hoped to see one day.
Before everyone looked up in the sky at the sound of a thunderous roar joined by a high-pitched whistle-like roar. With Naruko smiling in amazement when the sun was blocked out by the largest dragon she's ever seen, along with seeing a serpentine dragon around the half its size. Barely even noticing the much smaller dragon flying alongside them, constantly flapping its wings to stay in the air.
"Vhagar and Caraxes." Naruko whispered in awe at the sight of the legendary dragons.
"You've never shown such amazement with Meleys daughter." Said Rhaenys feeling slightly insulted at Naruko's awe for her sisters and good-brothers dragons compared to her own.
"I can see Meleys every day, muña, this is the first time I've seen Vhagar and Caraxes." Said Naruko smiling widely as she watched the dragons fly off to where Meleys nested to land, her father having already sent a carriage ahead for when they arrived.
Being able to feel the ground shake even from the distance as they landed, with the young Velaryon shaking in excitement knowing their riders will be here soon.
By the time the carriage finally rolled through the gates, Naruko could barely contain her excitement to see her sister and her family. The whiskered Velaryon moving to run over the moment the carriage door and Laena stepped out, followed by two young girls and a tall, older man. Only for Rhaenys to anticipate this and grab her youngest child's shoulder, keeping Naruko from running over.
"Laena, what a joy it is to see you again my daughter! And to finally meet our granddaughters." Corlys said smiling warmly at the sight of his eldest child returning home with her own children.
"You're finally home. Gods we've missed you tala." Said Rhaenys pulling her oldest daughter into a hug, placing a kiss on her forehead as she did so, glad to have her back home.
"It's wonderful to see you again father, mother. And of course my favorite Hāedar." Laena said returning her mother's embrace before hugging her father as well, then smiling at Naruko.
"I'm your only little sister Mandia." Stated Naruko smiling at Laena, who smirked as she patted her on the head.
"And thus you are my favorite." Replied Laena smiling again when Naruko threw her arms around her waist.
"I'm glad you're back Laena." Naruko said happy to have one of her siblings back home, even if it's for a short while.
"I am as well little sister." Laena said patting Naruko on the back before pulling away.
"But I'm not alone. Baela, Rhaena come here to greet your grandparents and aunt." Laena said turning to her daughters with a smile, motioning them to come forward.
Turning to her nieces, Naruko saw they were identical twins and looked to be two years younger than her. Both of them had the same silver-white hair and purple eyes showing their Valyrian heritage, they also had a light tan from living in the hotter Pentos. Aside from that, the only thing telling them apart is Baela had shorter hair and Rhaena had longer hair.
"Hello! It's nice to meet you both, I'm your aunt Naruko and I hope we can be friends." Naruko said smiling at her nieces, who returned the smile.
"I hope so too, aunt Naruko. I'm Baela I'm the older twin!" Said Baela stepping forward.
"It's nice meeting you as well, aunt. I am Rhaena." Rhaena said folding her hands in front of her with a short bow.
"Just Naruko is fine." Said Naruko not minding if they used just her name, as Corlys knelt down.
"You two are the very image of your mother when she was your age, I'm sure you two share her fire as well as her spirit." Said Corlys smiling at his granddaughters, with Rhaenys stepping toward them, reaching and cupping their cheeks.
"Let me have a look at you sweet girls." Rhaenys said smiling at the sight of her daughters children before wrapping her arms around them.
Laena's smile grew at her family welcoming her daughters, before rolling her eyes when her husband loudly cleared his throat.
"Are you so quick to forget to introduce your husband as well, dear wife." Daemon said coming up and wrapping an arm around Laena's waist, who smacked his chest in response.
"You aren't as funny as you think you are, my darling husband. I wish our daughters to be acquainted with my family, who are all more than familiar with you." Replied Laena, only for Daemon to smirk as his eyes darted downward.
"I don't believe all have had the pleasure of my acquaintance yet." Stated Daemon, making his wife look to see Naruko staring up at them, specifically at the Rogue Prince.
"I know who you are, you're Daemon Targaryen, the brother of the King. You ride my grandsires dragon, Caraxes the Blood Wyrm, and wield Dark Sister, the sword of Queen Visenya Targaryen. You fought with my father in the Stepstones and killed the Crabfeeder, you also were named King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea." Naruko said, getting a raised brow from Daemon at hearing her speak so clearly in High Valyrian.
Granted it was perfect, he noticed she misspoke a few words, but it was still impressive for one so young to speak it so fluently already.
"Yes, that is all true. And you are Naruko Uzumaki, my wife's sister and named after a fish." Daemon said with a smirk, making Naruko narrow her eyes.
"It means maelstrom." Retorted Naruko, which only made Daemon's smirk grow.
"Of course it does, little fish." Said Daemon amused when the young Lady glared at him, before she suddenly smiled sweetly.
"Hmm…my apologies Prince Daemon, I was unaware your memory had already begun fading in your advanced age. If it helps I'd be happy to write down my name's meaning so you don't forget it." Naruko said, throwing the Rogue Prince off-guard at the response before he narrowed his eyes.
"I assure you my mind is just as sharp as my blade." Daemon said, only for Naruko to continue smirking at him.
"I'm sure it is. Just as I'm sure it requires constant attention and care to main such an edge, just like a blade. But I suppose you don't have that issue, using a Valyrian Steel sword, an ancient relic far older than any of us. Which I believe fits you perfectly, uēpa vala." Said Naruko with her smirk growing as Daemon narrowed his eyes, before he looked to his wife who did her best to suppress her laughter.
"I'm so pleased you find amusement in this, wife." Said Daemon, not believing he's being insulted by a child.
"Well…she certainly isn't wrong husband, you are nearly twenty years my senior. But no worries, I'll still love you even when you're old and grey long before me." Laena teased, while Daemon merely grunted in annoyance as he stepped forward.
"Cousin, Lord Corlys." Daemon greeted nodding to Rhaenys and shook Corlys' hand.
"Daemon, a pleasure to see you as well." Replied Corlys returning the nod and handshake.
"Indeed cousin. Come let us get you four settled and speak during supper." Rhaenys said motioning some servants to gather her daughters and her family's belonging to bring inside.
"Come on, I'll show you around High Tide, then we can go to Spicetown and see the ships! We can also go see the Academy!" Naruko said taking Baela's and Rhaena's hands, eager to show her nieces around Driftmark.
"Thank you, aunt! We can take you to see Moondancer, she's our dragon!" Baela said smiling at the chance to see their mother's home.
"Moondancer is your dragon Baela." Said Rhaena quietly with her head down at the reminder of her lack of dragon.
"She's our dragon, mine and yours." Insisted Baela stubbornly, intending to share Moondancer with her twin until she got her own dragon.
"I'd love to meet Moondancer, and your dragon as well once you get one Rhaena." Said Naruko smiling at her nieces, which they returned as she lead them inside followed by their respective parents.
*119 AC*
Naruko frowned as she sat in her room looking in the fire at her dragon egg, which hasn't once shown any indication of hatching.
"Half of them never hatch." Rhaenys stated, getting Naruko's attention as her mother entered her room.
"Try telling that to the eggs in King's Landing or Baela's own egg." Said Naruko, having learned that several dragon eggs have hatched for other children.
King Viserys and Queen Alicent's sons Aegon and Daeron had their eggs hatch, from what Naruko's learned Aegon's dragon is called Sunfyre already being called the most beautiful dragon for his golden scales. While Daeron's hatched into a she-dragon Tessarion that had dark cobalt scales.
Then her nephews Jacaerys and Lucerys had their eggs hatch into Vermax and Arrax as well, and Baela already had Moondancer, who's growing bigger since last year.
Sadly Rhaena still didn't have a dragon of her own, even worse is she did get an egg after her family traveled to King's Landing to receive a royal blessing from the king. But the dragon that hatched from it had been small and sickly, dying soon after.
From the letters she's gotten, Rhaena had been inconsolable at her dragons death with Baela doing everything she can to cheer her up and insisted they would still share Moondancer.
It made Naruko wish to travel to Pentos to do something to help her niece, even give her own egg to Rhaena in the hopes of it hatching for her.
But as far as Naruko knows, besides he and Rhaena, the only other children who didn't have dragons were the kings youngest daughter Helaena and second son Aemond.
"Yes, there's rather…good fortune for hatchlings in King's Landing." Rhaenys said smiling tensely, given the rumors she's heard of Laenor's alleged sons with Rhaenyra.
'Then again are they truly rumors when we've seen undeniable proof.' Thought Rhaenys frowning slightly at remembering when she and Corlys went to see the birth of their oldest "grandson".
Her husband desired to see the birth of the one who would be their future king and have his blood flow through his veins. Rhaenys though had been skeptical of the child's paternity, fully knowing Laenor's preferences. Though part of her hoped that perhaps he was able to fulfill his duty and put a babe in Rhaenyra, that she would have a true grandchild.
That is until the child came screaming into the world, brown-haired, pug-nosed and Strong. Everyone that had come to greet the new prince and congratulate the Princess had all fallen silent, as if all the noise had been taken from the world. And there was Rhaenyra, practically daring anyone to try speaking the truth of what she had done.
Until Viserys expressed his joy at his first grandchild, loudly proclaiming her Baratheon blood had shown true in him. Yet anyone with eyes could see he was trying to convince himself as much as the rest of them that the babe was her blood.
But the truth had been clear, even more so when Corlys all but stormed out of the room, she had gone after her husband less he do something rash. Knowing how quickly his mood can change like the tides he rules over.
Rhaenys was also furious, not only at this insult to her family, but also at Corlys who had pushed for the marriage and Viserys for allowing his daughter to do as she pleases. The only thing keeping her from doing something rash was that someone needed to speak sense during this whole mess.
Thankfully it was only the kings word that kept anyone from speaking the truth out loud, as well Corlys insisting the boy be named Jacaerys, a true Velaryon name. Rather than Joffrey like Laenor originally intended.
'And I'm sure the second is the same as the first. They may have dragons, but it doesn't change their blood or looks.' Rhaenys thought having had no desire to witness the birth of Rhaenyra's second son, to see her House and family further insulted at the girls audacity.
"Though don't let it discourage you sweetling. Even if your egg doesn't hatch, it doesn't mean you won't have a dragon. Your sisters egg never hatched, yet now she rides Vhagar, the largest dragon in the world. I myself claimed Meleys, and there are still many unclaimed dragons residing on Dragonstone." Assured Rhaenys, with Naruko merely nodding before looking at her mother.
"Why did you choose Meleys, Muña? Did you pick her just because she's the fastest dragon?" Questioned Naruko curious of why her mother chose to claim Meleys and not one of the other dragons at the time.
With Rhaenys smiling at the question, pleased that Naruko would ask it knowing the knowledge will prove useful for when she claims her own dragon.
"Claiming a dragon isn't like claiming a horse my dear, you can't just climb on a dragon and expect them to listen. For some claiming a dragon is merely finding one you wish to mount, but others desire one dragon in particular. I chose Meleys over the other unclaimed dragons because…she was the only dragon I could bond with. And I knew the first time we flew together, no other dragon could ever compare to her." Said Rhaenys smiling at the memory of her first time flying on Meleys, unable to imagine riding any other dragon, before she looked at her daughter with a stern, serious expression.
"But a dragon is no slave, if they don't want you as a rider then they will make it very clear, that is if they don't devour you on the spot." Rhaenys explained, with Naruko listening intently to every word.
"And if a dragon does let me climb on and ride it?" Naruko asked, The Queen Who Never Was smirked as she leaned in closely.
"Simple, hold on tightly or you'll be flying yourself." Said Rhaenys, making Naruko's eyes widen.
Before screaming in delight, with it soon turning into giggles, when her mother suddenly lifted her up and spun her through the air.
"Muña!" Naruko squealed as Rhaenys twirled around, giggling lightly before holding her daughter close
"Just imagine this is what you'll experience when the time is right for my love." Rhaenys said as she went and placed Naruko in her bed.
"How will I know when the time is right?" Questioned Naruko as she got under the covers, hoping to know when she'll be able to claim a dragon.
"You'll know, trust me. Now it's bedtime, get some sleep tala." Said Rhaenys placing a kiss on her forehead, the young Velaryon nodded as she laid down and closed her eyes.
Watching her for a few moments to make sure she was really asleep, Rhaenys headed for the door stopping for a moment as she gave Naruko a stern look.
"I know you can still hear me and there will be no sneaking out, understood." Rhaenys stated before leaving, knowing her daughter had a habit of sneaking out in the middle of the night.
Naruko opened an eye when she heard the door close, throwing off the covers as she returned to the hearth where her egg remained. Not hesitating as she reached out and grabbed it, despite sitting in an open fire for so long and being hot to the touch, Naruko only felt warmth from the egg.
Before she went over to her window, which looked out over the bay and Spicetown, though the dual-haired girl looked out to where she knew Dragonstone was. Thinking of all the dragons that currently resided there.
'Vermithor the Bronze Fury ridden by King Jaehaerys. Silverwing ridden by Queen Alysanne. And the three wild dragons Grey Ghost, Sheepstealer and the oldest of the three, Cannibal.' Naruko thought imagining what it'd be like to claim and ride one those dragons.
*122 AC*
Naruko couldn't stop herself from smiling from her seat on Meleys' saddle, with her sitting in front of her mother as they were flying high in the sky over Blackwater Bay. The young Velaryon screaming loudly on joy as the Red Queen began diving down towards King's Landing.
"This is amazing! How could anyone ride horses or sit in carriages after this?!" Naruko said, with Rhaenys laughing at her enthusiasm.
"Yes, once you've ridden a dragon, everything else is ruined for you. The freedom, the wind on your face, looking down on everything below, there's certainly nothing else like it." Said Rhaenys having taken every opportunity she could to fly since claiming Meleys.
Even during her wedding she insisted on arriving on Meleys, knowing it would certainly be a memorable event for a bride to arrive on dragon back.
As they flew over King's Landing, Naruko looked down at the city in awe at the sight of the capital, with her attention immediately going to the three hills rising up from the city.
"That's Visenya's Hill where the Grand Sept was built. And that's Rhaenys's Hill, the Sept of Remembrance was built there in honor of Queen Rhaenys after she was killed, until it was taken over during the Faith Militant uprising, with King Maegor burning it down with Balerion, before having the Dragonpit built in its place as a stable for House Targaryen's dragons. And there's Aegon's Hill where Aegon and his sister-wives first landed during the Conquest and constructed the Aegonfort, until it was torn down and the Red Keep constructed in its place." Naruko said remembering her lessons on the history of King's Landing.
"Very good tala. And tell me, do you know why the Red Keep was constructed in the same spot as the Aegonfort?" Rhaenys asked smiling at her daughter.
"Because that's where the Iron Throne was forged and remained, so they had to build the Red Keep around it." Replied Naruko, with Rhaenys nodding.
"Indeed. It was impossible for anyone to move the Iron Throne once it had been formed." Stated Rhaenys as she directed Meleys to the Dragonpit.
As they approached the ground, Naruko saw the Dragonkeepers coming out to greet them and bring Meleys into the Pit. Though making sure to stay clear of being in the way of Meleys' landing to avoid being crushed by the she-dragon.
"Dohaerās, Meleys." Said the Elder, Meleys growled slightly at the command.
"Rȳbās. Naejot, nopot." An Acolyte said directing Meleys towards the Pit as Rhaenys got down helping Naruko once she was on the ground.
"You did well girl. Make sure she gets a nice, juicy boar." Rhaenys said patting Meleys' neck before speaking to the Dragonkeepers wanting to make sure her mount gets a nice meal.
"Kirimvose Meleys, you were amazing." Said Naruko smiling as she scratched the Red Queen's chin, earning a pleased trill from the dragon before she was herded into the Pit.
"Mother, little sister!"
Turning to the voice, Naruko's smile grew when she saw Laenor approaching them, accompanied by an honor guard for the future King Consort, before she rushed over and hugged him. The Heir to Driftmark was prepared for this, laughing as he picked his sister up spinning her around before setting her back down.
"It's good to see you as well Naruko. You've grown so much since I last saw you." Laenor said looking her over.
With her black and silver hair having grown down to below her shoulders and kept in a braid that wrapped her head while the rest was held in a ponytail, along with bangs framing her face. Her dress was the color of their House, being sea-green with silver seahorses sewn into the waist of it.
"You grow more lovely every time I see you sister, soon you'll be having men all over the realm fighting for your hand." Praised Laenor, only for the younger Velaryon to gag in disgust at the idea
"A bunch of old men more like it, no thanks." Said Naruko knowing enough that when noble ladies are of age they'll be swarmed with marriage proposals
Usually from Lords that'd be thrice their own age that are looking for young, beautiful brides that amount to little more than being breeding sows.
If she had her way, Naruko would make sure that would never happen, even better if she never had to be wed at all.
"Laenor, it's wonderful to see you again. Is the Princess with you?" Rhaenys asked hugging her son before looking at the carriage to see if Rhaenyra would step out.
"No, she's back at the Keep. She's already begun her birthing labors so we should hurry back if we wish to make it in time." Laenor said ushering them to the carriage so they can head to the Red Keep.
He had written to his parents, little sister and Laena in Pentos, wishing for his family to be present for the birth of his and Rhaenyra's third child. As they had only been here for when Jacaerys was born, but hadn't been able to arrive for when Lucerys, and none of them had been able to be there when Laena gave birth to Baela and Rhaena.
Laenor hoped that they'd all be together as a family this time to welcome not only his child, but Laena's as well, having heard that she'd be due to give birth as well any day now.
Unfortunately his message to Laena would take a week to reach her, and his father couldn't leave Driftmark unattended on such short notice. Thankfully though his mother and younger sister were able to make the trip on Meleys.
With Naruko wishing for the chance to visit her brother and meet her nephews, while Rhaenys refused to let her youngest child go to King's Landing alone. Even if she'd be under her brother's supervision, the Queen Who Never Was wasn't going to take any chances in this cesspool of a city.
"Of course, come along tala, we still have a trip to the Red Keep." Rhaenys said as she and Naruko climbed into the carriage, Laenor joining them once they were inside.
"So, what has happened on Driftmark since my last visit? How's the Academy performing?" Questioned Laenor curious of how things are back home and the state of the Driftmark Academy, making Naruko smile eagerly at the mention of the Academy.
After sharing her idea with her father of educating the smallfolk, Corlys had begun work on the project, find a spot to begin building the Academy. And sending out ravens to his contacts in the Free Cities to find those skilled in professions willing to move to Driftmark to teach. While Rhaenys had sent messages to her uncle Vaegon at the Citadel to see if there were any Novices and Acolytes that'd be willing to join the Academy.
It took some time but Vaegon did eventually send a response that he was willing to help, though only because he considered the project worth the effort. Having managed to find some in the Citadel that were talented and knowledgeable enough to be considered instructors. Even willing to provide copies of books that would be of use in furthering the education of the smallfolk.
Once the Academy had been established word was spread through both Spicetown and Hull, welcoming all those, whether they were men, women or children, willing to learn and better themselves. With it starting off slow, as only those curious or seeking to learn a profession entered.
But as time passed more and more people began arriving, much to Corlys' pleasure and pride at his daughters idea paying off. As the more who came to learn the more chose to stay once they finished their classes, finding work on Driftmark resulting in more trade and shops opening up.
Naruko was also happy at the Academy's success, having seen herself how much things improved on Driftmark whenever she went to Spicetown or Hull.
"It's going great! More students have been arriving every day, Kepa's even talking about expanding the Academy's size to accommodate the growing numbers." Naruko replied happy at how things have turned out.
"Indeed. Your father even believes that over time it may one day rival the Citadel, though he hopes to surpass it." Stated Rhaenys smiling proudly at her daughter, knowing it was her idea that created such an institute where men and women may learn.
Part of her even agreed with Corlys that if things continued as they were, the Academy may very well be seen as another Citadel.
'And if his other ventures for it bear fruit, then all the better.' Rhaenys thought, knowing her husband has also been working on finding Glassmakers from Myr and Smiths from Qohor.
Not only would this allow Driftmark to begin producing their own glass to sell, but Qohor Smiths create armor which many consider as superior to the armor made in Westeros. As well as being able to infuse colors into the metal to create truly beautiful work.
Yet Rhaenys knew her husband's real desire was to recruit a Qohorik Smith capable of reworking Valyrian Steel. A secret lost to the Doom and known only in Qohor, which they guard against all who'd seek to learn it.
"I'm happy to hear that. I'm sure you'll also be interested to know the Hand has been speaking with the King and Small Council to open more Academies across Westeros. With how prosperous it's been on Driftmark, Lord Lyonel hopes to spread it to the rest of the realm and will likely seek father's help in establishing them and finding instructors." Said Laenor, much to Naruko's surprise at other Academies being opened up while Rhaenys raised a brow.
"Really? Well I'm sure Corlys will enjoy having them asking for his assistance." Rhaenys said being able to imagine her husband's glee and working to ensure whatever deal was made benefited him the most.
"Indeed." Laenor said knowing his father would see another opportunity at having more Academies built across Westeros.
Before they looked at Naruko when she started gagging, much to their concern that something is wrong.
"Are you alright dearest?" Rhaenys asked only to relax when Naruko covered her nose in disgust.
"Ugh! What's that gods awful smell?!" Naruko asked feeling her eyes watering from the smell.
"Ah, that would be the smell of all the shit in Flea Bottom, little sister." Said Laenor seeing it's nothing serious, just her first time experiencing King's Landing.
"It's terrible! Muña didn't you say King Jaehaerys built a system of drains and sewers in the city?" Said Naruko looking at her mother, wondering how she and her brother didn't react to the smell.
"My grandsire did set up a sewer system to take care of the waste, sweetling. But it hasn't been maintained since his death, so it's likely it's become backed up over the years. And who would have any desire to clean that up?" Rhaenys said rhetorically doubting anyone would wish to clean up such a mess.
"Ugh, can we please hurry up?" Pleaded Naruko wanting to get to the Red Keep as fast as possible, much to Rhaenys' and Laenor's amusement.
*Later*
Much to Naruko's relief they soon arrived at the Red Keep where the stench of Flea Bottom didn't reach them.
"Are we going to see the Princess now?" Naruko asked looking between her mother and brother curiously, having always been interested in meeting the Heir to the Iron Throne.
Only knowing about Rhaenyra from what she's heard on Driftmark and letters from Laenor, that she was known as The Realm's Delight for her beauty, that she was named heir after the death of her mother Queen Aemma Arryn and baby brother. Along with the rather…violent and hasty wedding she and Laenor had.
But otherwise Naruko was curious of what the Princess was like as a person, rather than what she's heard from other people. Having learned that people liked to embellish and create different rumors for their amusement, or based on superstitions.
"Not yet tala, with the Princess having begun her labors only midwives will be allowed in her chambers. But we will be meeting our cousin, the King." Replied Rhaenys, making the dual-haired girl perk up at hearing they'll be meeting the King.
"Really?" Said Naruko not expecting to meet the King so soon as well.
"Indeed, it's only proper for you to greet His Grace upon arrival. He should be in his chambers now." Laenor said as they walked through the Red Keep and into Maegor's Holdfast.
When they crossed the drawbridge, Naruko looked over the side at the dry moat below lined with deadly sharp iron spikes. Seeing a knight wearing shining white and silver armor with a long white cloak hanging behind him standing at the far end guarding the entrance.
"Ser…Arryk?" Laenor greeted, though wasn't sure if it was Arryk.
"Erryk, Ser Laenor. Princess Rhaenys." Corrected Erryk nodding at the Prince Consort and Princess.
"Right, my apologies." Said Laenor as they entered Maegor's.
"That was one of the Kingsguard, right?" Naruko said knowing the Kingsguard.
"It was, Ser Erryk Cargyll. He along with his twin brother Ser Arryk joined the Kingsguard together when they were just eight and ten, which makes it impossible to tell them apart." Said Rhaenys, Laenor nodded in agreement.
"Indeed. No one has been able to correctly guess who is who, many have given up trying and simply address them as either brother." Laenor added, having tried finding some difference between the brothers but everything was exactly the same, even their hair and beards.
He started to think it was a joke between the twins to confuse everyone about who they're talking with, not even the rest of the Kingsguard could tell them apart.
"If they joined together, does that mean they're both skilled swordsmen?" Naruko asked knowing only the best and strongest knights are appointed to the Kingsguard.
"They are, but that doesn't mean they're the best, just that they're skilled enough to ensure the safety of the royal family." Said Laenor knowing that there's always someone better.
Walking through the Holdfast, Naruko couldn't help but notice how many nobles there were everywhere, all of them also seemed to have expectant looks on their faces. Guessing that they were all waiting to offer congratulations to the Princess after she gives birth to her third child.
They soon arrived a large set of doors guarding by another member of the Kingsguard, Naruko being able to recognize the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Harrold Westerling.
"Ser Laenor, Princess Rhaenys, My Lady." Ser Harrold said bowing in greeting, with Laenor and Rhaenys nodding in response.
"Ser Harrold, my mother and my little sister, Naruko Velaryon. We're here to greet His Grace." Said Laenor, the knight nodded before knocking on the door.
"Enter!"
Opening door, Ser Harrold stepped inside followed by Laenor, Rhaenys and Naruko, with the youngest Velaryon getting her first look at the King and…was rather underwhelmed.
'He's old.' Naruko thought seeing the Kings hair was thinning and nearly gone, before she was surprised to also see his left arm was gone as well.
Compared to when she met Prince Daemon, who looked every inch a battle-hardened warrior, the King was…disappointing to say the least.
Yet he looked to be in good spirits as he smiled at the sight of them as he stood up from his model of Old Valyria.
"Ser Laenor, Princess Rhaenys and the Lady Naruko, Your Grace." Announced Ser Harrold.
"Princess, what a delight it is to see you again!" Viserys said hugging Rhaenys, which she returned happy as well to see him, despite the differences between them.
"You as well cousin, you look to be in good health." Said Rhaenys looking him up and down, lingering on where his arm should be before looking at his face again.
"You as well cousin. And Ser Laenor, always a pleasure to have your company. While this must be your youngest I've heard about." Said Viserys grasping Laenor's hand firmly before looking at Naruko.
"Naruko Velaryon, Your Grace. It's an honor to meet you." Naruko introduced giving a stiff curtsy.
"And you as well, Lady Naruko. Though Naruko…quite an odd name isn't it? Isn't that a form of fish?" Viserys asked with a questioning look, much to Naruko's annoyance.
"It means maelstrom in High Valyrian." Said Naruko annoyed, reminded of when Prince Daemon said the same thing.
"That it is. Now I take it you have arrived after receiving news of Rhaenyra's birth." Stated Viserys addressing the mother and daughter.
"They have Your Grace, it was my desire to have my entire family present to welcome mine and Rhaenyra's newest child." Laenor said with a smile, making Viserys' smile grow.
"A splendid idea! Should we be expecting Lord Corlys and Lady Laena to arrive as well?" Viserys asked, knowing if Laena was coming then his brother would be as well, allowing him to spend time with his entire family together for the first time in years.
"Unfortunately my father is needed on Driftmark, Your Grace. While my message to Laena will not reach her for another week I'm afraid. And when it does, she will likely be giving birth to her own child as well." Laenor replied, much to Viserys disappointment.
"Ah, I see…well no matter, the newest Velaryon will still be surrounded by family when they enter the world." Viserys said still happy that Rhaenys and Naruko were able to join them.
"Indeed Your Grace. In fact I should be going now as well to meet Rhaenyra and our child. Word will be sent to you the moment it's over." Said Laenor bowing to the King before taking his leave.
Once her brother left, Naruko's attention turned to the stone model of Old Valyria, looking at it in amazement at the detail and design.
"Is this how Old Valyria looked before the Doom?" Naruko asked looking at the King, who smiled as he looked over his model.
"As close to Valyria as I could gather from historical records. You know it was built in the crater of a volcano, much like Dragonstone." Said Viserys, making Naruko smile.
"And the Dragonlords lived closest to the volcanic face, because it was closest to the source of their magic and power. The Anogrion was also built next to it and was where the Bloodmages worked." Naruko said, getting an impressed look from Viserys that she knew that.
"That's right. While at the foot of the mountain was the Boterlion, the Industrial Area, home to the slave quarters, aqueducts and bathhouses." Viserys said pointing to the Industrial Area part of the model.
"While the Vilinion served as the residential quarter, home to the Valyrian navy and teeming street markets." Stated Rhaenys tracing the area of the model.
"That's what House Velaryon was part of, the Valyrian navy." Naruko said looking at her mother, who smiled and nodded.
"It was, House Velaryon might not have had Dragonriders, but they ruled the seas just as House Targaryen ruled the skies." Rhaenys said.
"Indeed cousin. There's also the Vestrion, the Forum, the center of social and public life in Valyria, the buildings were much grander than the rest of the city, designed to impress all who visited. And at the end sat parallel to the palaces, is the Bōjurlion, an arena where all would visit to witness the tournaments and battles held there." Viserys said, with Naruko looking over the model closely.
"There's also the topless towers Valyria was known for, they were topless making it easy to keep their dragons close by. They also used sphinxes as decorations, like the ones outside the Citadel. The Freehold also constructed the Dragon Roads, they're made out of fused Dragonstone and traveled all across the Freehold connecting cities like Valyria, Tyria and Oros with outlying settlements, they were straight going from one settlement to another making trade much quicker. Though most of them were destroyed after the Doom, there are still some Dragon Roads found across Essos." Said Naruko stopping as she blushed in embarrassment when Viserys and her mother both laughed lightly.
"It seems your daughter has a great passion for our history, cousin." Viserys stated with an amused smile.
"She does cousin, it's one of the few lessons she's always eager for." Said Rhaenys smirking at her daughter.
"Forgive me Your Grace for…rambling." Naruko said bowing slightly, only for the King to shake his head.
"Think nothing of it child. I understand the fascination of Valyria and the desire to learn as much about it as one can." Said Viserys wistfully, knowing there's still much of Valryia they didn't know and was lost in the Doom.
"Do you think there's anything left in Valyria?" Questioned Naruko wondering if anything could have survived the Doom.
"If there is, then I believe it will remain lost. Many have tried sailing to plunder the remains of the Freehold, none have ever returned from that cursed land." Viserys replied aware if anything was to be found in Valyria, it would be a death sentence for anyone to try searching it.
"Princess Aerea did." Naruko said knowing she went to Valyria and returned.
"And she was gone for more than a year, when she returned the horrors were enough that King Jaehaerys declared any ships that visited Valyria or sailed the Smoking Sea was forbidden from making port in Westeros. And any Westerosi that dared travel to Valyria would be executed, if they returned at all." Said Rhaenys giving her daughter a stern look, while Viserys nodded in agreement.
"Indeed. None know the horrors Princess Aerea was exposed to in Valyria, only that even Septon Barth didn't wish to know what gods could allow such horrors to exist." Viserys stated, knowing for all his passion for Valyrian history, to enter Valyria itself is to tempt fate.
Naruko frowned but nodded at their words, though couldn't deny her own interest in what exactly rested in Valyria, the mysteries that remained.
The three turned to the door when Ser Harrold entered again bowing.
"Pardon the interruption Your Grace, Princess, but I just received word Princess Rhaenyra has given birth, a son hail and hardy." Said Ser Harrold, making Viserys smile brightly at the news.
"A son, truly? And they're both well? Wonderful! Come cousin let us go meet our newest grandson and you your nephew, Lady Naruko." Viserys said eager to see his newest grandson and daughter.
"Of course cousin. Come along dearest." Said Rhaenys taking Naruko's hand as they followed the King.
"The Princess was also bringing the new Prince for the Queen to see, Your Grace." Ser Harrold added, with Rhaenys frowning at this.
"Rhaenyra is bringing her son to the Queen herself, right after giving birth?" Rhaenys asked incredulously, knowing no woman should be moving after giving birth.
"It was the Queen's orders Princess and Princess Rhaenyra refused to let anyone but herself take the babe." Said Ser Harrold letting out a sigh knowing with the rumors it'd only reflect badly on Rhaenyra if she refused, while the Queen Who Never Was could only scoff.
"Lovely. It's good knowing things have gotten worse since my last visit." Said Rhaenys knowing it's times like these she's honestly relieved she wasn't named heir.
"The queen doesn't sound very nice." Naruko said in Valyrian, Rhaenys would've snorted if it wasn't beneath her, but she did smirk.
"You'll find few people are nice here daughter. Which makes it all the more important to watch, observe and listen, to know who is nice and who isn't." Said Rhaenys, the young Lady nodded at her mother's words.
Following after the King, they soon arrived at the Queen's chambers where Laenor and Rhaenyra were already present with the baby, along with Queen Alicent Hightower.
'She's…' Naruko thought looking at the Queen seeing how much younger she was compared to the King, she even looked the same age as Princess Rhaenyra.
While the Princess herself looked tired, Naruko could understand why she was known as The Realm's Delight, inheriting the classic Valyrian beauty from both her parents.
"What happy news this morning." Viserys said getting their attention, with Laenor and Rhaenyra smiling at the sight of him while Alicent put on a smile, though the Queen and Princess were surprised when they saw Rhaenys and Naruko.
"Indeed, Your Grace." Laenor said overjoyed to have another son.
"Princess Rhaenys, what a surprise it is to see you in the capital once more. But a happy surprise I assure you." Alicent said curtsying, which Rhaenys merely nodded at.
"Yes, My Queen, I merely wished to be here for the birth of my new grandson and to give my daughter the chance to meet her nephews. Rhaenyra for gods' sake sit down, you just gave birth you shouldn't even be walking." Said Rhaenys moving and putting a hand on Rhaenyra's should when she tried standing to greet them.
"Ah, forgive me for not being very…presentable, Princess. Though I'm pleased at your presence and that of my good-sister." Rhaenyra said smiling at them.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Princess, My Queen." Said Naruko giving another stiff curtsy.
"Please, we are family, Rhaenyra will do just fine my dear." Said Rhaenyra smiling at her good-sister.
"You as well, Lady Naruko. You are the image of your mother and a scion of your House." Alicent said with a polite smile.
"Thank you for your kind words Your Grace." Said Naruko bowing her head.
"Where is he? Where is my grandson? There. There he is." Viserys said stepping forward, eager to see his new grandson, with Rhaenyra passing her son to Laenor who gently set him in the Kings arm.
Focused on his grandson, Viserys missed how Rhaenyra and Laenor smiled nervously, while Rhaenys got a look at her "grandson", closing her eyes and letting out a breath as she did so.
"Oh. A fine Prince. Sturdy." Viserys said to Laenor, already being able to tell he'll be a strong lad.
"He's really small." Said Naruko standing on her toes to get a good look at her nephew.
"Perhaps now, but he'll grow into a fearsome knight. Yes, you will." Viserys said softly.
"A strong knight?" Naruko asked innocently, making Rhaenyra and Laenor's nervousness grow.
"Indeed, a strong, powerful knight." Said Viserys nodding in agreement as he rocked his grandson.
"Does the babe have a name yet?" Alicent asked looking at the boy's parents.
"We haven't spoken-" Said Rhaenyra only for Laenor to interrupt.
"Joffrey. He'll be called Joffrey." Laenor said wishing to honor his late friend and lover.
He originally wished to name Jacaerys Joffrey, but his father insisted that the future Heir to the Iron Throne have a Velaryon name. The same with Lucerys when he was born as he'd be the future Heir to Driftmark. But his third son wouldn't stand to inherit anything, so Laenor refused to miss his chance.
While Rhaenyra looked horrified that he'd want to name her son after his dead friend and former lover, knowing the rumors of her children's parentage were already bad. But giving any of them a name not of Valyrian origin would only make things worse.
'Gods fucking…Laenor you fool.' Rhaenys thought pinching the bridge of her nose at her fool of a son.
Knowing to name the Princess's third son after his late lover will only add to the rumors that he's not the true father, not that it's that hard to tell Rhaenyra's sons don't have a drop of Velaryon blood in them.
Even if they weren't her true grandchildren, Rhaenys didn't hold any ill will to Rhaenyra's children, they weren't to blame for how they were born or who their parents are. Her problem was Rhaenyra having children that anyone could see weren't true Velaryons and trying to pass them off as such.
'She's making a mockery of both our Houses.' Thought Rhaenys already being able to imagine what will come when Viserys inevitably passes.
Naruko, meanwhile, raised a brow at the name, given it wasn't a typical name for a Velaryon or a Targaryen.
But that'd require for the now named Joffrey to be a Velaryon in the first place.
She might be young, but Naruko wasn't stupid either, she'd heard about Joffrey Lonmouth, who he was to her brother and her brother's proclivities. It wasn't that hard as during the times he'd visit Driftmark, she'd never once seen him glance at a girl, yet his gaze did linger on knights or squires one would call handsome.
And the horrifying time she once saw Laenor in the act during one of his trips, where she then proceeded to wash her eyes out and suppress it to the deepest corner of her mind.
Though regardless, Naruko didn't really care about her brothers tastes, he's her brother no matter what and she loved him.
"That's an unusual name for a Velaryon." Alicent stated giving Rhaenyra a look, that her son will have the name of Laenor's deceased friend and rumored lover.
"I do believe he has his father's nose. Don't you?" Viserys chuckled looking between Laenor and Joffrey, with Rhaenyra giving her husband a look.
Laughing nervously before clearing his throat, Laenor took that as his signal, knowing he needed to steer the conversation away from the topic and get them away from the Queen.
"If you don't mind, Your Grace, your daughter has exerted herself heroically and should rest." Laenor said knowing Viserys won't say anything if it's about Rhaenyra.
"Of course." Viserys whispered aware Rhaenyra had just given birth and needed rest
Though before he passed Joffrey back to his parents, Alicent stepped over smiling at her step-grandson, much to the worry of his parents.
"There." Said Viserys lowly, allowing Alicent to get a look at him, with the Queen only focused on the slight wisps of brown hair on his head.
Rhaenyra's and Laenor's worry only grew at seeing Alicent holding "their" son in her arms, with Laenor following her to the door.
"Well done, my girl. I do hope the labor was easy." Viserys said proud of his daughter for another successful labor.
"I think I called the midwife a cսոt." Admitted Rhaenyra, not remembering much during her labors, but she remembered that.
"Oh." Viserys said not looking surprised, even smiling slightly at seeing she's still the same girl even after so many years and motherhood, before embracing his daughter kissing her cheek, getting a smile from the Princess as she did the same.
"Do keep trying, Ser Laenor. Soon or late, you may get one who looks like you." Alicent whispered handing Laenor his "son" back with a humorless smile.
"Come along daughter, we should take our leave as well." Said Rhaenys ushering Naruko out of the chamber after Laenor and Rhaenyra left.
"You have only just arrived cousin, surely you don't intend to leave so soon?" Viserys asked thinking they were planning to leave already.
"Not yet Your Grace. We will stay a few days so Naruko may bond with her nephews. I also hope it won't be much trouble for Naruko to take part in the lessons at the Dragonpit, it will do her good to learn how to command her dragon once she claims one." Said Rhaenys wanting to make sure her daughter is properly educated in learning to command dragons.
"A marvelous idea! She is more than welcome to join the boys in their lessons this afternoon, they should be getting ready to travel to the Dragonpit soon. She may join them on the way." Viserys said liking the chance to allow the children to learn together and further the bonds between Houses Targaryen and Velaryon.
"Aegon and Aemond should already be waiting in the training yard with a carriage to bring them to the Dragonpit." Said Alicent, despite how she'd prefer none of her children went near those beasts, especially Aemond with how obsessive he can be, she also can't deny they needed dragons.
And she hoped for them to make a good impression on the Sea Snake's youngest daughter, before she interacted with her "nephews".
"Of course Your Grace. My Queen." Said Rhaenys bowing her head before she and Naruko left the room.
"Why do I have to attend lessons in the Dragonpit? Can't you teach me how to command a dragon, mother?" Naruko asked looking at her mother in confusion.
"Meleys is an adult dragon, having already been claimed once before and obeys me without question. You would not learn anything by watching me. But in the Dragonpit you will see young dragons and learn that even dragons that have hatched and grown alongside their riders do not always listen. You'll see for yourself when you get there." Rhaenys replied knowing it'll serve her well to attend these lessons and see bonding with a dragon and commanding them are no easy tasks.
Naruko frowned slightly but nodded in understanding, only to stop and look down when she noticed a trail of blood on the ground.
"Uh…Muña." Naruko said uneasily at how much blood was on the floor, with Rhaenys looking only to sigh at the sight.
"At this rate Harrenhal won't be the only castle with blood mixed into the mortar." Rhaenys muttered putting a hand on Naruko's back guiding her way from the bloody trail.
Leaving the Holdfast and heading back outside, Naruko saw a carriage in the training yard along with two boys with silver hair wearing green standing by it, along with a member of the Kingsguard. Guessing these must be Prince Aegon and Prince Aemond, Rhaenyra's younger half-brothers.
Knowing Aegon is the oldest, Naruko saw he looked to be three-and-ten years old, while Aemond looked to be the same age as her.
'Why are they wearing green?' Naruko wondered, confused at why they were wearing green like House Hightower rather than the black and red of House Targaryen.
"Prince Aegon, Prince Aemond." Said Rhaenys nodding at the two young princes, getting their attention only for Aegon to look at them boredly.
"And who are you exactly?" Aegon asked, not really interested in conversing with anyone when he still has to wait for his nephews to go to the Dragonpit.
The only thing keeping him from leaving is the "surprise" he, Jace and Luke had planned for Aemond after the lesson.
"That's Princess Rhaenys, the Lady of Driftmark and wife of Lord Corlys Velaryon, she's the rider of the Red Queen." Hissed Aemond looking at his brother in annoyance at his attitude, before bowing his head to the Princess.
"Princess, it's an honor." Aemond said not expecting to meet an experienced Dragonrider, but it also meant there's now another dragon in the Pit, making him hope for a chance to get a glimpse of Meleys.
"Oh, yes of course. An honor, Princess." Aegon said giving a nod before looking away, with Rhaenys raising a brow at the greetings.
"You as well, My Princes. This is my daughter, Naruko Velaryon, she's to accompany you along with the Princess's sons for your lessons at the Dragonpit." Said Rhaenys, with Naruko stepping forward.
"It's nice to meet you cousins." Naruko said smiling at the brothers.
"You as well, My Lady." Replied Aemond nodding in greeting.
"You have a dragon?" Aegon asked feeling a little curious of what dragon she has.
"No, my egg hasn't hatched and I haven't had the chance to claim a riderless dragon yet." Naruko said, causing the older Prince to snort in amusement and leaned in to his brother.
"You should be pleased Aemond, you're no longer the only Dragonless Targaryen anymore." Said Aegon with an amused smirk, making Aemond lower his head while Naruko frowned at him.
'And this is the boy the Greens want to crown king?' Thought Rhaenys with an unamused expression.
"Just because we don't have dragons now, doesn't mean we won't claim them later." Retorted Naruko, Aemond raised his head at her words while Aegon kept smirking.
"Of course cousin. Do let me know how that works out for you, provided you survive such an attempt." Aegon said, with Naruko narrowing her eyes further.
'…I don't like him.' Naruko decided already not liking Aegon with his attitude.
"Well, I shall leave you to await your lessons, My Princes. Naruko, behave yourself." Rhaenys said giving her daughter a look.
"Yes Muña." Said Naruko giving her best innocent smile, which Rhaenys saw through but nodded and headed back into the Keep.
It's been years since she was last here and the Lady of Driftmark intended to find out what exactly has been happening here.
*Later*
Naruko, Aemond and Aegon didn't have to wait long before Laenor arrived with Jacaerys and Lucerys, both of whom were excited for their lessons and the chance to meet one of their aunts on their father's side. Before the children got into the carriage and headed to the Dragonpit, being joined by some guards to ensure their safety and protection.
It wasn't long before their arrival, with Naruko taking in the sight of the massive domed structure, amazed at the sheer size of it.
'And this is only the building, there are caverns carved into the hill where the dragons stay. They must be even bigger.' Naruko thought in amazement.
Her attention turned back to the lesson as the Dragonkeepers brought out Vermax, Jace's bonded dragon. Seeing he was about the size of a horse with olive green scales and orange frills and wing membranes. He reminded Naruko a little of a snake with the shape of his head.
With the dragon hissing and snarling as he was lead up the surface, his head moving around trying to get out of the chains holding him.
"Umbās!" Commanded one of the Keepers when Vermax began moving too much, only for the young drake to growl at the command.
"Let him come." Said the Elder motioning them to release Vermax and bring him forward for Jacaerys to command.
With Vermax looking side to side when he felt the chains being removed, shaking his body in relief once they were gone and he could move freely. Before his focus turned to Jacaerys, feeling the developing bond between him and his rider, moving forward to him while the Elder urged Jacaerys forward.
As the pair grew closer, Lucerys watched his brother intently to see how he did in commanding Vermax, wanting to be able to do the same when it was his turn to command Arrax. While Aegon couldn't help but yawn, already growing bored and wishing he was back at the Keep to get a drink or a maid to fuck.
Meanwhile, Naruko took the time to really observe Rhaenyra's sons, seeing Jacaerys looked to be eight-years-old while Lucerys seemed to be six-years-old. Looking at them, the young Velaryon tried to find any features they might've inherited from Laenor. They lacked the most common Valyrian features, having neither silver hair or purple eyes. They didn't even have black hair like her and her mother, if they did one could at least argue the Baratheon blood in their father was stronger in them.
But instead they both had brown hair, like the color of mud, and matching colored eyes as well. If Naruko didn't know for a fact they were Rhaenyra's sons, then she'd think they didn't have any Valyrian blood at all.
'Yet Aegon and Aemond both took entirely after the King.' Naruko thought seeing how no one could doubt they were Targaryens from their looks alone, while guessing Princess Helaena also inherited the same Targaryen features.
It was a jarring sight how different both sets of brothers looked from each other, yet they were meant to be uncles and nephews.
"Call Vermax to heel, Prince Jacaerys." Instructed one of the younger Keepers as Vermax grew closer and closer.
"Dohaerās." Jacaerys said causing the young dragon to stop, raising himself up to look his rider in the eye.
The sight made Jace smile happily, believing Vermax would now obey without question, only for the dragon to suddenly snarl and move forward again causing the Prince to move back a little.
"Keligon!" Jace said ordering Vermax to halt, relieved when he did so and even seemed to lower himself to the ground as if he was scolded.
"Sȳrī gaomagon." Said the Elder nodding in approval at the Prince standing his ground.
Before a Dragonkeeper brought out a goat, causing Vermax's head to immediately snap towards it at the sound of the goats bleating. The dragon didn't take his eyes off his soon-to-be meal as the Keeper tied the goat to a post, the animal completely unaware of what would soon happen.
Seeing his meal wouldn't be escaping, Vermax began stalking towards it making Jace frown at the sight.
"Vermax. Vermax!" Jacaerys called out only for his dragon to ignore him, no longer feeling the resolve and strength through the bond, refusing to obey the weak commands.
"Keligon! Keligon!"
Vermax roared as the Keepers got in his way, holding him back with their staffs keeping the olive-colored dragon from lunging at the goat.
"Zaldrizo aoho syt aeksio sagon ao bevilza, darilaros nuhys..." The Elder Keeper spoke as another Dragonkeeper translated, as Jace could not understand High Valyrian yet beyond simple commands and phrases.
"You must hold mastery over your dragon, my young Princes."
"...hae Darilarot Aegot Vvsperzomy."
"As Prince Aegon has with Sunfyre."
"Zijosy aot tetiri ozlettosy, toli rybagon zirylo vindilza."
"Once they're fully bound to you, they will refuse to take instruction from any other." Said the Keeper finishing the translations, while Vermax continued screeching, eager for his meal.
"Can I say it?" Jacaerys asked eager for the next part.
"Mm-hm." The Elder grunted in response, much to his excitement before he looked back at his uncles, specifically at Aemond, before the Elder grabbed his shoulder turning his attention back to his dragon.
"Dracarys, Vermax!" Jace said eagerly, as the Keepers allowed Vermax to approach his meal.
Aemond could only watch on sullenly at Jacaerys bonding with his dragon, feeling the familiar jealousy inside him whenever he's forced to watch his brother and nephews with their dragons. With the children watching Vermax released a blast of olive green flames engulfing the goat.
The animal let out a squeal of pain, until it faded out as the flames consumed it before Vermax stopped and saw the roasted meat, lunging forward to eat. As the dragon eagerly began devouring the goat, Aegon wrapped an arm around Aemond's should knowing it's time to begin the plan.
"Aemond, we have a surprise for you." Aegon said, getting his younger brothers attention as he looked at his brother and nephews with mild suspicions.
"What is it?" Questioned Aemond wondering what this surprise is supposed to be.
"Something very special." Lucerys replied before he ran off into the lower part of the Pit, the sight getting Naruko's attention.
"You're the only one of us without a dragon, or you were the only one." Aegon said in concern, though had a mischievous smirk as he looked at Aemond then Naruko.
"Indeed." Aemond muttered feeling another pang of jealousy at the reminder of his lack of dragon.
"And we felt badly about it, so we found one…for you." Revealed Aegon, making Naruko narrow her eyes suspiciously.
'They just happened to find a unclaimed dragon, which let them bring it to the Pit? What're they doing?' Naruko thought following after them in case this was some trick.
"A dragon? How?" Aemond asked skeptically, highly doubting his brother and nephews just stumbled onto a dragon for him.
But part of him also couldn't help but hope they actually did somehow find him a dragon, that he would finally be seen as a true Targaryen.
"The gods provide." Stated Aegon motioning to the Pit where grunting could be heard, until Lucerys emerged pulling a pig…a pig with brooms attached to it like wings.
"Behold…" Aegon declared smiling in amusement.
"The Pink Dread!" Aegon, Jace and Luke said together before they began laughing at their prank.
Though Naruko crossed her arms, gripping her dress tightly at the so-called "prank." While she might enjoy a funny prank, she knew there's a difference between having fun and…this. This wasn't a prank, it was cruel mockery.
"Be sure to mount her carefully. First flight's always rough." Aegon "advised" as he, Jace and Luke began snorting like pigs, while Aemond simply bore it with a sullen expression, refusing to show how much it hurt, but couldn't stop himself from shaking from his suppressed emotions.
"You think this is funny?!" Demanded Naruko seeing enough of this and refused to let it continue.
With her outburst silencing the boys as they looked at her along with Aemond, only for the pranksters to flinch at the glare she was giving them.
"Well?! You think this is funny?! Dressing up a pig, calling it a dragon to someone who doesn't have one?!" Naruko said marching up to Jacaerys and Lucerys, both boys unable to help but shrink under her glare.
"I'm sure you both think it's just so hilarious?! It must be nice to be able to mock someone, while you two were born with dragons hatching in the crib! It must be so great to be lucky, to bond with dragons before you can even walk! It's so great that you can make fun of those who didn't get a chance like that! Because what would you know what it's like to not bond with a dragon, to wonder if you'll ever have that bond?! Wondering if you're truly Targaryens! I'm sure you both love it so much, that you don't have to worry about such things!" Said Naruko, not fully saying it, but making it clear that while they might be called Velaryons, they didn't have a drop of her family's blood.
"You both should be grateful for what you have, not mocking those less fortunate than you!" Naruko snapped harshly, with Jace and Luke shaking at her scolding, feeling nervous, confused and squirming under her glare.
Aegon couldn't help but snicker as Naruko verbally ripped into Jacaerys and Lucerys, he might like his nephews but that didn't mean he didn't find it funny. Only for the oldest prince to fall silent when Naruko turned her glare on him.
"Don't even think I forgot you Aegon! You're his brother, you of all people shouldn't be mocking him for not having a dragon!" Naruko snapped, with Aegon unable to help but fidget under her gaze.
"It was just a prank." Muttered Aegon not seeing the big deal.
"It was just a prank. Oh in that case how about I fill your shoes with pig shit and rub it in your face, will you laugh at that prank?! Or is that only you can be a stuck-up cunt that can get away with bullying others but no one else can?! But you're the oldest, so I guess that means you think you can do whatever the hells you want to anyone, even your own brother! You should be helping him, showing him what it's like to have a dragon, encouraging him to keep trying until he gets his own! Instead you only care about reminding him of what he doesn't have, doing nothing but insulting and mocking him! But that wasn't enough was it?! You wanted to be even crueler and had the nerve to present him a fucking pig!" Said Naruko before she suddenly pulled out a long, thin dagger from her boot
Much to the shock of the boys, with Aegon, Jacaerys and Lucerys being a little scared at seeing she had a weapon. Only for Naruko to march up to the pig and stab it right through the head, getting a pain-filled squeal which soon faded as the pig fell to the ground.
Before she turned to the "pranksters," who nearly shit themselves as she pulled the dagger out of the pigs head, seeing the blood dripping off it. With the darkness of the Dragonpit combined with the blood making Naruko look rather terrifying to them.
"Get out of my sight, or I'll give you all a reason to squeal." Naruko threatened, with the three boys immediately turning and running for the exit, not wanting to test their luck more than they already have.
Once they were out of sight Naruko took a few deep breaths to calm down before wiping her dagger off on the bottom of her dress and returned it to her boot, uncaring for staining her clothes. Before she saw Aemond hadn't left as well, making her blush in embarrassment.
"I…um…I apologize for…acting like that. It…wasn't befitting of a Lady." Naruko said, while Aemond looked at her in disbelief.
"No…it wasn't… But you didn't need to do that." Said Aemond not expecting her to stand up for him like that, though she didn't have to, he's used to the taunting.
"Yes I did because no one deserves to be treated like that. I might enjoy pranks, but that was just cruel, and they should know better than to do something like that." Said Naruko refusing to stand by and do nothing.
Aemond looked at her, not sure what to say to that as he wasn't used to being defended like that, let alone by someone he just met.
"…Thank you." Aemond muttered, making the Velaryon smile at him.
"You're welcome cousin. And don't let what they say get to you, all of them were lucky to have their dragons hatch from eggs. Not all Targaryens have dragon eggs hatch but they still claimed dragons, it just means the dragon meant for you is already out there, you just have to find them." Naruko stated, while Aemond frowned at this before his attention turned down into the Pit, where the dragons resided.
"Do you want to see them?" Asked Naruko seeing the look on his face, with Aemond merely nodding desiring to see and hopefully claim a dragon that resided in the Pit.
"Then come on, Meleys and Seasmoke are both here, and I'll show you them." Naruko said, surprising Aemond again before smiling slightly in gratitude.
Heading down into the Pit, Naruko and Aemond kept their hands on the wall to avoid tripping in the darkness of the caverns. Though as they headed deeper into the caves, Aemond couldn't help but glance at Naruko and the dagger in her boot.
"Why do you have a dagger?" Aemond asked knowing his mother would faint at a Lady having a weapon, and what Naruko had done with it just moments ago.
"My father gave it to me as a name day gift, but I'm hoping to have a sword one day." Said Naruko smiling eager at the chance to wield a sword.
"A sword? A battlefield is no place for a Lady." Said Aemond, only for Naruko to narrow her eyes at him.
"Then what about Queens Visenya and Rhaenys? They both took part in the Conquest just as much as Aegon, Visenya also wielded Dark Sister and defended Aegon twice. Queen Alysanne also had Jonquil Darke as a sworn shield and protector." Naruko retorted hating how just because of her sex many believed she shouldn't know how to fight.
"Perhaps, but Visenya and Rhaenys were Dragonriders, and Jonquil Darke was a bastard not a Highborn Lady." Aemond said, with Naruko scoffing in response.
"That still doesn't change that they were women who trained and knew how to fight." Stated Naruko.
"And have you received training?" Questioned Aemond with a raised brow.
"I have, both to use a dagger and in archery. And soon I'll be learning to use a sword as well." Naruko replied smirking at the Prince.
"I've already begun my swordsman training under Ser Criston." Aemond said glancing at her.
"Well you're a Prince, of course you'd start training to use a sword sooner than most." Said Naruko rolling her eyes.
Turning a corner, Naruko grinned widely when she saw the red-scaled dragon curled up in one of the caverns, not hesitating to run up to her. While Aemond stayed back, unsure if it'd be wise to approach a bonded dragon.
"Meleys!" Naruko said, making the Red Queen open an eye seeing her riders offspring in front of her before the Velaryon stepped closer and began caressing her scales.
"How are you girl? Enjoying your rest after the fly over? Did you get that boar mother had the Keepers bring you?" Said Naruko, with Meleys letting out a trill at the questions.
Looking back at Aemond to see he still hadn't approached, Naruko smiled encouragingly and motioning him forward.
"It's okay, she recognizes my scent and won't try burning or eating us." Naruko said as Aemond slowly moved closer, unable to miss the chance to be this close to an adult dragon.
Once he was close enough, Aemond tensed when Meleys turned her gaze to him, ready to make a run for it in case she did breathe fire. Only for the Red Queen to give him what he could only describe as a bored look before laying her head back on the ground.
"Come on, you can pet her too." Encouraged Naruko, with the Prince looking unsure but still reached out to touch the dragon.
Letting out a breathy laugh when he rested his hand on Meleys, feeling how warm her scales were, not believing this was really happening.
"Meleys, she's called the Red Queen for her scarlet scales and is considered the fastest dragon alive, and named after the Valyrian Goddess of Love and Fertility." Aemond said in amazement, recounting what he learned about all the living dragons and of Old Valyria.
Something he hoped to make up for his lack of dragon was learning all he could of Valyria, their customs, beliefs, traditions. Aemond desired to prove even without a dragon, he's as much a Targaryen as the rest of his family.
"That's right. She was also first claimed by your grandmother, Princess Alyssa. I've also heard that after giving birth to her sons, Prince Viserys and Prince Daemon, she took them onto Meleys and flew them around when they were both just a few days old." Said Naruko, getting a laugh from Aemond imagining his father and uncle being taken flying as newborn babes.
"Thank you, cousin." Said Aemond looking at her grateful for giving him this chance.
"You're welcome, you can think of it as training for when you claim your own dragon. Muña told me that they're more than just our mounts, they're our companions and friends, and should be treated with the respect they deserve." Naruko said, getting a nod from Aemond knowing any dragon he claims will be his greatest treasure.
"Now come on, let's see what other dragons are here." Said Naruko, Aemond nodded in agreement as they left Meleys' lair to find other dragons.
Moving through the tunnels, the children looked for where the other dragons were kept, until the walked around a corner only to see a large dragon ahead of them.
"Stop!" Aemond whispered stopping Naruko from going further at the sight of the dragon.
"Who is it?" Naruko asked unable to see what color the dragon was.
"It's Dreamfyre, my sister Helaena's already claimed her." Said Aemond tensing when Dreamfyre roared at them, seeing them through the darkness and not liking intruders entering her lair.
"Dreamfyre? She was dragon bonded with Princess Rhaena, King Jaehaerys' older sister. She bonded with Rhaena when she was just nine." Said Naruko smiling at the sight of one of the older dragons.
Only to freeze as Dreamfyre opened her mouth showing a pale blue-silver glow before she unleashed a blast of fire at the ceiling above their heads. The sight of the flames sent the children stumbling back in panic as they rushed to get out of the caverns and away from the angry she-dragon.
*Later*
"When I said behave yourself, that did not mean go into the Pit and approach claimed dragons unfamiliar with you." Rhaenys said pinching the bridge of her nose as her soot and dirt covered daughter stood in front of her.
After escaping the Pit, Naruko and Aemond had been found by the Kingsguard that went with them for their lessons, before being taken back to the Red Keep. With Aemond taken to the Queen while Naruko was brought to her mother, who was less than pleased at the sight of her.
"We didn't mean to intrude on Dreamfyre, I just wanted to show Aemond Meleys and Seasmoke." Said Naruko, making the Queen Who Never Was sigh and shake her head.
"Be that as it may, you shouldn't have gone down there alone, you're both lucky Dreamfyre didn't direct her flames at you rather than above you." Said Rhaenys before she looked at her daughter.
"But there's also the matter of you drawing a dagger on three Princes. What in the name of the Fourteen compelled you to do something like that?!" Rhaenys said raising her voice now, knowing such a thing is grounds for treason.
Having heard from Laenor how Jacaerys and Lucerys came running back to the Keep terrified at how Naruko pulled a dagger on them. With Rhaenyra being beyond angered at the threat to her sons, though Rhaenys made it clear she would speak to her daughter and decide her punishment.
"They brought out a pig!" Said Naruko scowling at the reminder, while Rhaenys frowned.
"What do you mean?" Rhaenys asked.
"Aegon, Jacaerys and Lucerys, they said they had a surprise for Aemond, that they found him a dragon. Instead it was a pig they put wings and a tail on, calling it The Pink Dread. They all laughed at him, making pig noises, and no one did anything about it." Naruko explained, making her mother's frown deepen at hearing this.
"And you thought it was wise to threaten them with a dagger?" Said Rhaenys as while she understood such a thing was cruel to do to a Dragonless Targaryen, it still wasn't an excuse to draw a weapon.
"I shouted at them first then pulled out my dagger and…stabbed the pig in the head. But I wasn't going to hurt any of them, I just wanted to let them know what it's like to be humiliated, that it's not so funny when it happens to them." Said Naruko lowering her head, while Rhaenys sighed.
"Even so, what you did was dangerous Naruko. They are Princes of the Realm and you are just a Lady, you could be tried for treason. You must offer your apologies and plead forgiveness." Rhaenys said not wanting anyone to use this against her daughter.
"Only if they apologize to Aemond first." Stated Naruko, causing Rhaenys to narrow her eyes at her daughter only for Naruko to return the look.
"I am in no mood for games daughter, you will offer your apologies. Do not challenge me on this." Said Rhaenys, with the young Velaryon crossing her arms stubbornly.
"I will, after they apologize first." Naruko said refusing to apologize when they were the ones who started it.
Seeing her daughter was going to be stubborn, Rhaenys couldn't help but sigh again, and send a prayer to her parents if this is how she had been as a child.
"Very well, if you wish to be that way, your dagger now." Rhaenys said holding her hand out, making Naruko scowl before reluctantly handing it over.
"I'll also be taking your bow when we return to Driftmark and you won't be allowed to train or have any desserts for the next three moons. After that you may have them back." Said Rhaenys, much to the dual-haired girls disbelief.
"Three moons?!" Said Naruko not believing she'll be punished that long.
"One for each apology you refuse to give. And unless you wish me to include the pig you killed for another moon, I believe you will accept your punishment." Rhaenys said, causing Naruko to close her mouth but still frowned at the punishment.
"Good. I will consider returning them sooner, but only if you apologize to the Princes. And I will speak with Laenor and Rhaenyra about their sons behavior." Rhaenys said as regardless of their parentage, they were still seen as Princes of the Realm and such behavior was unbefitting of Princes.
"And Aegon?" Said Naruko feeling a little better that her mother would at least do something about Jacaerys and Lucerys.
"That will be up to the King and Queen." Said Rhaenys, while she can do something about Jacaerys and Lucerys, only the King and Queen could discipline their own children.
Hearing this Naruko couldn't help but grumble, unsure if anything would be done to Aegon as the King's firstborn son. But still glad something will be done and that she had been able to help Aemond feel better afterwards.
*Next Day*
Naruko couldn't help but scowl and cross her arms as she sat with her mother, the King and the Hand Lord Lyonel Strong, as they watched the Princes train under Ser Criston's supervision.
She had hoped to join the training and practice her archery, only for her mother to forbid her, as even if they aren't on Driftmark her punishment was still in effect. Leaving the Velaryon to sulk as she could do nothing but watch.
Though she supposed it did give her a chance to see how they can do, having been curious about their training when Aemond mentioned he started his.
"Soften your knees. Feet light." Criston advised watching Aemond's stance and where he needed work.
From what she could see Aegon seemed to rely on his greater size and strength, constantly striking the dummy without pause. Aemond looked to focus more on where to strike, not moving around as much as Aegon was.
"Keep your feet light and your hands heavy."
"This is the stuff, Lyonel." Said Viserys smiling at the sight of his sons and grandsons training together.
"Lads that learn together, train together…knock each other down, pick each other up. They will certainly form a lifelong bond, wouldn't you agree?" Viserys asked looking at his Hand, with Lyonel giving a half-hearted smile.
"That is the hope, Your Grace." Lyonel stated, skeptical of the Black and Green children getting along like the King hoped.
'He needs a better grip.' Naruko thought when Aemond knocked Jace's practice sword out of his hand.
"There's more to forming bonds than merely training together cousin. You'll also forgive my doubts of your son wishing to bond with those that present him a pig as a mount." Said Rhaenys glancing at her cousin, making Viserys sigh at hearing this again.
"What's done is done Rhaenys, they're merely boys having harmless fun. Aemond shouldn't have so easily believed they happened to find a wild dragon and lead it into the Pit." Said Viserys, while the young Velaryon narrowed her eyes at this.
"Is it wrong to hope for something the rest of them gained so easily? That they were willing to do something kind for him?" Naruko asked getting their attention.
"There's nothing wrong with hoping for such things, but it's important to not let oneself be so easily lead." Viserys replied, with Naruko merely letting out a "tsk" sound.
"Don't stand too upright, my prince. You'll get knocked down." Criston said to Jacaerys, before turning towards Aegon only to see him focused on some passing maids.
"Aegon." Said Criston approaching the oldest Prince while bringing Aegon's focus back to his training.
"I've won my first bout, Ser Criston. My opponent sues for mercy." Aegon boasted, while the Kingsguard looked unamused at his jest, seeing he needed a more personal lesson.
"You'll have a new opponent then, my Lord of the Straw. Let's see if you can touch me. You and your brother." Criston said motioning Aemond to join them as he went to grab his own practice sword.
Looking up at the King as he pulled his gloves on, Criston grabbed a sword and faced the brothers. With Aemond making the first move as he swung his sword which Criston deflected with ease. Before swinging his sword blocking Aegon's strike next, blocking Aemond again as well.
Seeing Aegon swinging again, Criston deflected the blow as Aemond lunged at him only for the Kingsguard to sidestep as he ran past. Until Aegon tried getting close and swung his sword as hard as he could, only for Criston to lean back avoiding it. Glancing between the Princes as they tried finding an opening, until they both raised their swords up bringing them down.
Only for Criston to step back waiting for the right moment and bringing his sword down on theirs knocking them to the ground. With Aegon then charging him, with Criston moving out of the way smacking Aegon on the back as he nearly crashed into Aemond.
"You're gonna have to do better than that." Criston stated knowing they'll have a long way to go before they can actually hit him.
Blocking Aemond's sword, Criston quickly moved his blade knocking Aemond's low to block Aegon's before striking the younger Prince with his swords hilt. Watching as Aegon lunged at him again, smacking his sword aside followed by swatting him on the back knocking him down next to Aemond.
"They should've been working together more. They kept attacking separately, if they attacked together they'd have had a better chance." Naruko stated, getting looks from the other observers.
"You believe they'd defeat Ser Criston working together?" Questioned Viserys curiously.
"No, they'd still lose. He's older and more experienced than both of them, they'd just have a better chance if they coordinated more. They also should've used their surroundings, push a training dummy into him, throw dirt in his face, something that'd distract him." Said Naruko with a frown.
"Such actions would be considered dishonorable, My Lady." Lyonel said, only for Naruko to shrug.
"If you're fighting a stronger, more experienced opponent you need to use any advantage you can get." Naruko said believing the only thing that mattered in a fight is making sure you don't die, if that meant cheating or performing actions considered "dishonorable", so be it.
"Ah. Weapons up, boys." Said Ser Harwin Strong nodding to Jace and Luke, making them smile at their mother's sworn shield.
"Give your enemies no quarter." Harwin advised only to see Criston looking at him, forcing the Commander to keep walking.
"It seems the younger boys could do better with a bit of your attention…Ser Criston." Said Harwin wishing it was him training the boys, but knew that'd do nothing but invite more rumors.
"You question my method of instruction, ser?" Criston asked not liking his training methods being questioned, let alone by Rhaenyra's "protector".
"Oh, I merely suggest that method be applied to all your pupils." Harwin replied, with the Kingsguard gaining a thoughtful look as an idea came to him.
"Very well. Jacaerys, come here." Criston said grabbing Jacaerys roughly by his armor, making the brown-haired Prince stumble at suddenly being pulled.
"You spar with Aegon. Eldest son against eldest son." Said Criston, with Aegon and Aemond laughing slightly, knowing it wouldn't be much of a match.
Something Viserys and Lyonel noticed as well, though for different reasons. While Rhaenys frowned wondering what exactly Cole was planning with this.
"It's hardly a fair match." Harwin commented walking around the yard, working to suppress his concern.
"I know you've never seen true battle, ser, but when steel is drawn, a fair match isn't something anyone should expect." Retorted Criston, as Aegon patted Jace on the back eager to be the one knocking down his opponent this time.
'He's not wrong.' Naruko thought frowning willing to admit Ser Criston had a point, but she got the feeling this was now more than just another lesson.
"Blades up." Criston said looking between them, with Aegon looking eager while Jace looked nervous.
"Engage."
Not wasting a moment Aegon shouted as he lunged at Jacaerys, swinging his sword with reckless abandon as his nephew backed away only able to deflect the strikes as best as he could. Until Aegon reached out and shoved Jace to ground, chuckling as he did so.
Though Jacaerys didn't stay down long, getting up and running at Aegon with a shout of his own, surprising the older Prince at the unexpected rage. Soon finding himself backing away from Jace's strikes, quickly ducking with Jace's sword going over his head striking a dummy. This giving Aegon the chance to get behind and shove the dummy into Jacaerys knocking him to the ground.
"Foul play!" Harwin said quickly intervening before Aegon could press his advantage.
"I'll deal with him." Said Criston as going over to Aegon while Harwin went to Jacaerys.
"Ser Harwin seems…close to Jacaerys and Lucerys." Naruko stated seeing the way Harwin was looking at Jace.
"Yes…quite close." Muttered Rhaenys looking at the Hand, with a very unamused expression, Lyonel could only sigh in resignation at the look.
"It's to be expected, Ser Harwin has been Rhaenyra's sworn protector for…ten years now Lyonel." Viserys said looking at his Hand.
"Yes, Your Grace, ten years." Replied Lyonel, his heart beating fast enough he was sure it'd burst at the sight of Harwin and Jacaerys, what one could plainly see by just looking at them.
"Plant your feet. You have a height advantage. Use it. Advance on him…" Criston advised Aegon, turning back to Harwin mentally scoffing at his behavior before sending Aegon out.
"You!" Aegon shouted pointing his sword at Jace
Shouting, Aegon swung his sword in a fury refusing to let Jacaerys get even a chance to defend him, pushing his nephew further and further back. All while Criston and Harwin followed, observing the match.
"Close with him." Criston said glancing at Harwin for a moment.
"Press him backward! Close with him!" Continued Criston watching as Aegon's attacks grew more furious.
"Stay on the attack! Use your feet!" Criston said shouting at the end, with Aegon letting out his own shout as he slammed his foot into Jace's chest knocking him to the ground.
Crying out as he hit the ground, Jacaerys looked up at Aegon, nervousness and fear growing in him at the sight of his uncle standing over him. With Criston and Harwin looking at each other, the Heir of Harrenhal looking ready to knock his head off, while the Kingsguard knew he just needed one more push.
"Don't let him get up." Criston said, making Aegon shout as he swung his sword knocking Jacaerys' down whenever he tried lifting his weapon.
"Stay on the attack!" Yelled Criston as Aegon lifted his sword up to bring it down, only for Harwin to have enough.
"Enough!" Harwin shouted grabbing Aegon, unable to stand by and do nothing anymore as his hidden son was being attacked like this.
Much to Aegon's anger as he screamed in rage at anyone daring to touch him, as Harwin pushed him aside taking his sword as he did so.
"You dare put hands on me?!" Aegon shouted glaring at Harwin.
"Aegon!" Scolded Viserys at his sons temper getting the better of him.
"He needs to learn to control that." Naruko whispered to her mother, who nodded in agreement.
"Indeed." Said Rhaenys shaking her head seeing how easily Aegon is angered and losing himself to his rage.
"You forget yourself, Strong. That is the Prince." Said Criston looking too calm despite his charge being grabbed and thrown aside.
"This is what you teach, Cole? Cruelty…to the weaker opponent?" Harwin retorted helping Jace up and making sure he was alright, before he began gathering the discarded training swords.
Scoffing as Criston dropped his own sword on the ground in front of him, with Harwin kicking it aside as he went to put the rest away.
"Your interest in the princeling's training is quite unusual, Commander." Criston said casually, sounding surprised and curious, despite how anyone with eyes can see the truth.
"Most men would only have that kind of devotion toward a cousin…or a brother…or a son." Said Criston knowing his plan succeeded the moment Harwin rounded on him, his face contorted into rage.
With Criston letting him strike him in the face falling to the ground as Harwin was on him in an instant, landing blow after blow on the Kingsguard's face. Much to everyone's shock at the sudden attack, before four members of the Kingsguard rushed over to pry Harwin off their sworn brother.
"Get back!" Said one of the knights, struggling to hold Breakbones back from living up to his name.
"Say it again! Say it again!" Harwin demanded trying to knock the Kingsguard knights away, intent on ripping Cole's head from his shoulders.
"Hehehe. Thought as much." Criston muttered as he chuckled, knowing he won, before he spat out some blood.
While the watchers had different reactions to the sudden assault, Viserys being confused at why Harwin would act in such a way, Lyonel lowered his head in shame knowing his days as Hand are likely up. Naruko watched with wide eyes, both at the attack and that it took four knights to hold Ser Harwin back. And Rhaenys looked on with a frown and narrowed eyes.
'You fucking idiot.' Rhaenys thought knowing Harwin's now all but admitted that Rhaenyra's sons were his with this stunt, and the Queen Who Never Was wasn't pleased, not in the slightest.
*Later*
After the incident in the training yard Rhaenys intended to have her and Naruko return to Driftmark, having seen more than enough of King's Landing and the Red Keep. Now she wished to return home, less she do something she regrets, especially if she caught so much as a glimpse of Rhaenyra.
With Naruko not questioning her mother's decision to leave sooner than expected, given what happened and the rumors that will spread as a result. Though the young Velaryon doubted they can really be considered rumors anymore. Not when the proof is clear for all to see and Ser Harwin all but confirming it with his actions.
"Mother. Where are you going?" Laenor said quickly walking up to his mother and sister as they prepared to leave the Keep for the Dragonpit.
"Back to Driftmark. I find myself weary of the capital and wish to return home now." Said Rhaenys tersely not even glancing at her son.
"What? But you've both just arrived, surely you can stay a few more days." Said Laenor smiling hopefully at them, causing Rhaenys to stop and close her eyes.
Once she opened them and turn towards Laenor, the Prince Consort felt nervousness fill him at the look in her eyes. With Rhaenys glancing behind Laenor, noticing a knight trailing behind him, having learned his name is Ser Qarl Correy, one her sons new "companions."
"Sweetling allow me a moment alone with your brother." Rhaenys said, making Naruko look between them for a moment before moving off to the side, giving her brother a sympathetic look as she did so.
"Is that him?" Rhaenys asked rhetorically nodding at Qarl, with Laenor glancing at his secret lover.
"Ser Qarl? He's my friend, he's been telling me about the Triarchy returning to the Stepsto-" Laenor said only to fall silent when Rhaenys raised her hand.
"I don't care to hear about the fucking Stepstones, Laenor. Now answer the question." Said Rhaenys in no mood for games, Laenor's silence being all the answer she needed.
"Gods…this is why I was against this mummers' farce of a marriage. Now look at what's happened, do you have any idea what you've done you foolish boy? Does that arrogant girl know or is she truly so ignorant to what's being said about her and her sons?" Rhaenys said rubbing her forehead at the madness of it all.
"Our sons. Anything that's being said about them is nothing but vile allegations and rumors, nothing more." Said Laenor only for his mother to give him a warning look.
"Don't try and play the fool with me Laenor, we both know the truth and so does anyone else with eyes. And after what the Hands son did, the only reason nothing is done is due to Viserys choosing to remain blissfully ignorant or ignoring what he knows to be true to protect his fool daughter." Rhaenys said, making Laenor fall silent.
"We…we tried…I have tried…so many times, but…they are my sons regardless of their blood." Said Laenor hating the gods made him like this, that he could only claim Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey as his sons in name.
"Clearly you didn't try hard enough if Jacaerys was born the same year you were wedded. How long did it take before Rhaenyra invited her Strong knight into her bed? Once might've been a mistake, but three Laenor! Three times is not only an insult to our House but House Targaryen as well! Do you truly believe the Lords will bend the knee to a Queen that dismisses her duties so casually?! That they would accept her son as heir to the Iron Throne after her?!" Rhaenys demanded before scoffing and shaking her head.
"The Lords swore oaths and bent the knee to Rhaenyra when the King named her his heir." Said Laenor but even he couldn't deny the words sounded hollow and empty.
"Before the King had three living sons who will go on to have children of their own. Three lines of trueborn sons against her line of…" Said Rhaenys before stopping herself, as even if they were speaking in High Valyrian, she still didn't risk speaking the truth out loud.
"The King will die and when he does…there will be blood one way or another. I can only hope your fool of a wife learns this before she damns herself and what little claim she has left." Rhaenys stated knowing that no matter what happens, the moment Viserys dies, war will follow.
Meanwhile, Naruko stood off to the side watching her mother and brother, not being close enough to hear what's being said, but could clearly see her mother wasn't happy.
"You're leaving." Someone said, making Naruko look to see Aemond standing behind her, much to her surprise that she didn't hear him.
"Yes, Muña wants to return to Driftmark after…the training yard." Said Naruko, with Aemond merely nodding in understanding.
"Perhaps you will…visit again." Said Aemond willing to admit that Naruko's proven better company than his brother and nephews have ever been.
"Maybe, despite the smell in the city it was nice seeing the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. And perhaps next time I visit we can show each other the dragons we claimed." Naruko said smirking at the Prince, while Aemond frowned for a moment before realizing what she actually meant.
"Yes, perhaps." Aemond replied understanding that she believes they'll both have dragons when they meet again.
"Naruko, it's time." Said Rhaenys turning to her daughter once she was done speaking with her son, frowning slightly at seeing her with Aemond.
"Coming Muña. It was nice meeting you Aemond, until next time." Naruko said smiling and waving at the Prince.
"You as well." Said Aemond merely nodding as he watched the mother and daughter exit the Red Keep.
Climbing into the carriage waiting for them, nothing was said as the mother and daughter made their way to the Dragonpit. Arriving to find Meleys already brought out and waiting for them, the Red Queen growling and stomping around, feeling her riders irritation.
"Lykirī Meleys." Rhaenys said running her hand along Meleys' scaled soothing her dragon, as she climbed up first then pulled Naruko onto the saddle in front of her.
"Sōvēs!" Commanded Rhaenys, causing Meleys to roar as she flapped her wings and shot off into the sky.
"There's going to be a war isn't there." Naruko stated once they were in the air with no worry of anyone overhearing them.
"It's best not to think of such things tala." Said Rhaenys, only for Naruko to turn her head with a raised brow, reminding Rhaenys far too much of herself.
"Muña I'm ten, not stupid. I know what Laenor's like and that his sons are his in name only. And I can tell the Queen and Princess don't like each other, Ser Criston also doesn't seem to like the Princess and her sons either. Aegon is also the Kings oldest son, and a living male claimant is the reason you were never Queen. It'll be the same reason not everyone will support the Princess as Queen, along with the obvious reasons." Said Naruko, getting a sigh from the Princess though she did smile slightly.
"You are far too smart for your age Naruko." Rhaenys said before sighing again and held her daughter close.
"But yes…as things are…war is an inevitability. All that remains is someone to light the flames." Added Rhaenys knowing if something isn't done, then the entire realm will be engulfed in the bloodiest civil war in history.
"…Could we visit Laena? I want to see her along with Baela, Rhaena and the new babe." Said Naruko looking at her mother, hoping for the chance to see her sister and nieces, along with her new niece or nephew.
"I think I would like that as well daughter. We'll speak with your father when we arrive to see if a visit to Pentos may be arranged." Rhaenys replied with a smile, liking the chance to escape the politics of Westeros for a little while.
Naruko smiled happily at this, looking over Meleys to the ocean below as Driftmark came into view, admiring the sight of her home from so high up. Laughing loudly when Meleys dived down towards the island, feeling the wind hitting her face. The Red Queen only slowing her descent as they approached the ground.
But as they landed, Naruko and Rhaenys soon noticed Corlys was present as well, the young Velaryon feeling dread creeping through her when she got a good look at her father.
"Corlys? What is it? What's happened?" Rhaenys asked as they dismounted Meleys, worried when she saw how distressed her husband looked, the redness of his eyes and tears staining his face, as well as a ravens scroll clenched in his fist.
"There…there was a raven in the night…from Pentos." Corlys said, his voice sounding hoarse.
"Pentos? Is it Laena? Did…did she deliver her babe…are they both alright?" Demanded Rhaenys, refusing to even consider what might've happened that could've put her husband in such a state.
Yet she couldn't deny the growing dread as the Sea Snake took a shuddering breath and held out the message for her. Part of Rhaenys wanted to simply rip apart, not wanting her fears confirmed by whatever was written on it. But the larger part of her also needed to see it herself, to know what's become of her daughter.
Naruko's own dread grew as her mother took the message and read it, seeing several emotions flash across her face, pain, denial, anguish, despair and pure sadness as tears began falling from her eyes. It wasn't hard to guess what happened, yet the whiskered Velaryon prayed to the old, the new, the Valyrian Gods, even the Drowned God that she was wrong.
"M-Muña, K-Kepa…what…what happened?" Naruko asked looking between her parents.
Rather than respond, Rhaenys was soon unable to remain standing as she collapsed to her knees screaming in pure agony. With Corlys quickly wrapping his arms around his wife, despite his own pain at what they've now lost. Meleys threw her head back screeching loudly, feeling Rhaenys' pain and despair, yet was unable to do anything to help her rider.
Seeing this shook Naruko deeply before she saw the message her mother dropped on the ground and shakily picked it up to see the truth for herself. Only to wish she hadn't as she read what was written.
Laena had been unable to deliver her babe, she chose to die in Vhagar's flames, Daemon and her nieces would be traveling to Driftmark with her remains to lay Laena to rest.
The dual-haired girl didn't even notice the message slip from her fingers, feeling numb at the knowledge her sister, her oldest sibling, was gone along with her unborn child. That Baela and Rhaena had lost not just their mother but a sibling they'll never get to know.
Naruko didn't even notice as her mother pulled her into an embrace, holding her remaining daughter tightly out of fear she'd vanish along with Laena. The only thing Naruko noticed was when tears started falling from her eyes as she hugged her mother tightly, crying in despair at her sister's death.
She'd later reflect back on this moment, that this was the moment when the flames of war were lit, when the dragons would dance and the fox would roar.
So, what did you think, good. Yep this is a long chapter and we're starting out with Rhaenys giving birth to hers and Corlys' third child, who is named Naruko by Laena. Before we go through several timeskips, seeing Naruko grow up on Driftmark, seeing what she's like and interactions with her family.
Also if it's not clear, this is a reincarnated Naruko, which we'll be exploring more of later, but for the moment Naruko herself isn't aware of her past life but will be as she grows older and experiences new things.
Anyway after the timeskips we get to 122 AC, with Naruko and Rhaenys heading to King's Landing for the birth of Laenor's third "son", where Naruko gets to meet the royal family. Including her princely cousins Aegon and Aemond, along with her "nephews" Jacaerys and Lucerys. With her being aware of her brothers taste and can clearly see they aren't his sons.
Before they head to the Dragonpit for their lessons in bonding with their dragons, where Naruko witnesses The Pink Dread prank, which she finds less than amusing before tearing into Jace, Luke and Aegon, scaring them away when she pulls a dagger and kills the pig. With her and Aemond then bonding a little as she takes him to see Meleys, much to Aemond's awe and gratitude for the opportunity. Only for them to scared away by Dreamfyre.
Then we see Rhaenys scolding Naruko for her behavior and threatening the Princes, but does understand when she explains what happened, though does tell she needs to apologize. Only for Naruko to be stubborn and refuse unless they apologize to Aemond first.
Next we see the training yard incident as Criston goads Harwin into snapping and attacking him, all but proclaiming he's the father of Rhaenyra's sons. With Rhaenys being less than amused at the insult to her family and House, tearing into Laenor and expressing what he and Rhaenyra have both done in condemning her sons.
Finally we see Naruko and Rhaenys returning to Driftmark, only to be given more bad news as they learn of Laena's and her babes death in Pentos. A moment that will soon lead to a bloody and violent war between family, as all of Westeros will burn under the dragons flames.
