A/N: I'm a fan of Ruby Gillman and the main character as well as the main plot had a lot of fun, interesting potential and it took me a while to figure out how to make it more mature, interesting, dark and thrilling. Then I remembered one of the greatest video game settings ever and it was a perfect fit.
With that said do not think of this as a movie adaptation but rather as a tv series with a far more mature, complex story and Ruby is still the main character yet she might be made into an antagonist or antihero with her friends and mother being a second main characters in the series.
The description kind of gives it away but what can I do? Anyhow please enjoy and I'll say more at the end.
Prologue
Ruby Gillman had been in a desperate state of mixed emotions. Anger, shock, anxiety, confusion and of course panic. She had only marched into her room a few minutes after her parents and her uncle who she hadn't even known existed until today, told her that she was a Kraken and that she was apparently Royalty. She'd never experienced such a jarring day in her entire life Ruby looked down at her hands, the left hand was normal enough except for her skin color being blue and occasionally being able to use Elasticity to stretch her arms and legs to unnaturally preposterous to humans and it only had about four digits as apposed to five that humans were born with. She looked at her other hand in a mixture between frustration and confusion, It looked almost identical to her left if weren't for two main differences. It was glowing a brightly blue color and there were tentacles.
In silence she stared at it, Ruby took a long deep breath before she turned back her gaze to the door and she could hear her Uncle saying something about. "It would only be a matter of time before the entire Ocean would be looking for them." And "Maybe her mother should come back with him to the city to talk with her." She kept herself hidden on the banister of the stairs as she continued to listen. Her mother had cut him off and stated adamantly. "We're fine, go home it's a long trip please." Without even giving him more time to argue she closed the door in his face, Ruby slid back behind the banister and let out a deep sigh as she looked down at her sea pet Nessie as it whimpered and tried to comfort her Ruby's phone went off thankfully she had it on silent mode and she was able not to get caught as she looked at her phone to see it was her friend Margot.
She retreated to her room and answered it before slowly closing her door as she was about to speak she heard another voice on the other line. "Well, what are your ideas for going to the prom?" Ruby recognized the voice it was Bliss. She stopped her finger from ending the call when Margot spoke. "You are saying is abandoning a member of the squad! We can't do that, it would break our girls heart." Ruby's eyes widened in pure shock as she realized that her friend had butt dialed her, she forced herself to continue to listen. "Don't pretend you're not dying go with Trevin and I have been planning on it since the second anniversary of our group to see if Kayla wants to take me and we have missed every other event and you must be as tired of eating fondue as much as we are." Bliss appeared to sigh before she said. "I am but going behind Ruby's back to do this, what if she finds out." Ruby was complete shock at mere idea of her friends ditching her as yet again she stopped herself from hanging up the phone as Margot said. "She won't, we can just say we're going to stay at home for night and take her to her favorite places around town the day before so the night of prom we would all be too tired to go anywhere else." Bliss hesitated after a few moments she sighed in defeat. "Okay I agree that actually could work but we need to be very careful about how we do it." Margot muttered something just loud enough for Ruby to hear. "We eat a lot of cheese." Margot then sighed as she said. "She'll never know, okay I'll call Trevin to tell him about it." Ruby couldn't take it anymore and ended the call.
She felt nearly completely betrayed. "My Mom is still keeping secrets from me, I find out that I am a monster and now my friends are abandoning me, I need answers and I want to get away from all of this." She told herself in a low voice as Nessie came up to her as she snuck into her beanbag and vomited up a party nose maker. Ruby got an idea as she picked up Nessie and hugged her. "You're a little genius, that guy can't possibly keep a secret." She got up and quickly snuck out of her house, running through the town careful not to get spotted by anyone. Eventually she heard him struggling with a group of seagulls trying to get his corn dog, Ruby immediately took the food and threw it in a nearby trash can.
"Did you see that they took my stick snack!" Her uncle proclaimed before she reached out to grab his face and said. "Forget the corn dog, I need to know who sent you here?" Her uncle immediately frowned and looked ashamed. "No no no please don't ask me things I am terrible at keeping secrets just talk to your mom." He said with a pleading smile Ruby shook her head and grunted in irritation. "Mom won't tell me anything." Brill immediately proclaimed. "Well nether will I, she should be the one to tell you about your grandmother." He froze and covered his mouth. Ruby's eyes widened. "I have a grandmother?!" Brill tried to distract her. "No! No I didn't say grandmother I said landlubber. Ahoy?" "Wait if only the woman in our family can turn into giant Krakens then she must be a Kraken too." Ruby said with certainty and confidence. She looked around frantically. "Where is she?! Is she here?!" Brill laughed a little as he said. "No she would never get out of the water, I don't know how you're mom did it for all these years I mean land is not meant for a giant Kraken."
Ruby looked down at her tentacle hand then looked at the dock. "You're right." She said before taking a deep breath. "I need to take control of my own life." "Yeah!" Brill said encouraging. "I'm a Kraken!" Ruby exclaimed. "Preach!" Ruby looked toward the end of the dock as the lights began to flicker on as if they were calling out to her to go into the ocean. "And if I want answers then there's only person who can help me." "You're mom!"Brill said but Ruby ignored him and said. "My grandmother!" She began to walk away to the end of the dock. "Yeah wait, what?! No!" Brill exclaimed and quickly picked up his niece and placed her right behind him before getting in her face with as he shook his head in a negative gesture "I can't let you do that your mom would kill me!" Ruby huffed in annoyance and then looked at her uncle with pleading eyes and practically begged to him. "Uncle Brill please take me to see her, I just want to know what exactly I am." Her uncle sighed as she embraced him in a hug. "You know this is the first hug we've had in fifteen years." He sighed again and looked at her with nervous expression mixed with a smile. "Okay. Ruby I'll take you to see her." Ruby looked over joyed as she once again turned to run to the edge of the dock Brill managed to grab her again and quickly pull her aside.
"Whoa, where do you think you're going?" He asked in a sudden sarcastic tone mixed with knowing intent. Ruby looked at him her face made clear that she was done with being held back from getting answers. "The ocean." She said so deadpanned that the words could almost mirror her face. Her uncle laughed and then proceeded to walk her toward the edge of the dock and watched as her uncle pulled a rope that led out to the water and something was pulled towards her. Yet she couldn't see what it was although the way the water kept slipping apart she realized it was some kind of buoy that looked strange Art deco design. Brill brought it up and held it in his hands and then pressed a switch on it and then tossed it back into the ocean he then gestured towards the outer ocean as something was coming from the water and fast.
Ruby looked to where her uncle was pointing as a strange thing slowed to a halt and stopped at the dock's edge, the younger Kraken noticed that whatever it was had lights much like a buoy that Brill had yet it seemed bigger only when it rose out of the water and actually floated up and levitated to the dock's edge as if it were a boat, to Ruby it looked like a small metal submarine with three headlights that were designed to look as if they were coming out of a fish's mouth with a large glass door in the center but before she could even ask about the strange vessel Brill had already stepped inside and jested for her to come along.
Ruby looked confused but quickly shook herself and stepped forward with a determined expression as the glass door automatically closed and sealed shut. Brill pulled the large lever in the center of the vessel and the entire thing quickly fell into the water and left the dock. Ruby could see the vessel made a slight turn around from the dock and felt the entire vessel speed up then began to dive farther into the sea, she turned to her uncle who was sitting down on one of the rows of seats designed to fit three maybe four people on each row. "What exactly is this thing?" Ruby asked as she turned back to the glass door to look out at the sea she saw fish, colorful coral reefs and other creatures she recognized from the Human marine biologist quarterly book and report she had often read.
"This is a bathysphere, all your questions about this and everything else are going to be answered when we get back. Right now we have a few minutes to enjoy the view and relax." She nodded and turned her attention back toward the glass door as more fish and other sea creatures came and swam past the strange vessel and began to wander just how much her mother had kept secret from her and felt that finding answers was just what she needed to clear her mind and she just needed to get away from everyone and everything. Mental she was on the verge of breaking and she couldn't catch a break ever since she rescued Connor from drowning then that 'New girl' came out of nowhere and stole credit for her saving him, cupped with the whole turning into a Kraken and discovering that her mother was hiding a secret from her entire family and then her friends were talking about ditching her. She took a calm breath to escape from today's frustrations and was more determined than ever to understand just what she was and about her family.
A/N: A bit short but I wanted to distance it from the film and flesh out some aspects in the film that were not really touched on. But what do you guys think thus far, I'll get into more details about the city and the Kraken lore in this story soon enough but I wanted to start at some point in the film and go from there. What I really want is probably to make this build up to something, I don't know what exactly yet but I have some ideas. Please let me know what you think so on this story and where you think it will go from here.
Reviews and feedback are always welcome and appreciated. But please be civil.
Until the next update stay safe everyone and thank you for reading this.
