June 1917
"Hey." Beatrice said as she entered Henry's home office later that night.
Henry sat at his desk, just staring down at some unfinished papers on it. He had heard the other woman knock on his front door, enter when he hadn't answered, and step into the office without an invitation. But he didn't quite have the energy, really, to even care.
"I'm guessing dinner with her and the family wasn't so cheerful." His ex wife said as she stepped further into the room.
He finally looked up at her. "Dinner was lovely." He told her. "Abigail and her children have been through far worse."
"Then why do you look like someone stole your horse?" She sat up on the corner of his desk.
"Because this is not what I wanted for her. I just wanted her and her family to be safe and happy. And to keep the support they've had all this time. Not for me to ruin it for them." He admitted to her. "Maybe I should leave town." He said quietly.
"Don't you dare." She told him. "I have never seen nor heard you like this before. When I first arrived, I admit that I was trying to get you back, but only because I've been so lonely since my husband died. When I found out that there was someone that you might be interested in, I got a little carried away. And jealous. But I can't believe all those things she said to the whole town about you. That's real love. You deserve it too. After what I did to you. And I am sorry. I know that I am a very selfish person at times, but back then I was also afraid for Christopher. I wasn't sure we'd be able to take care of him with you switching up jobs so much and struggling to find one with good pay. And instead of discussing my fears with you…I left. Letting you believe that it was your fault when it wasn't. It was very wrong of me and I apologize. Please don't let this stupid little town ruin the incredible love that you've finally found. Don't let ME ruin it."
The air grew quiet as Henry just looked at her for a while. Once he finally moved, she watched him stand and pick up the telephone, dialing for the mercantile to ask Fiona to ring him into the nearest train station.
"Henry, no." Beatrice frowned. "Don't leave."
He ignored her demand. "Yes, hello. Can I order a train ticket for early in the morning to Hope Valley, please?"
The next morning, Abigail woke up in her own bed with a yawn and a stretch as she sat up. Off in the distance, she could hear the roosters crying out to announce the morning, and despite everything that happened the day before, she smiled.
She stood up, heading over toward her wardrobe before she heard a car horn outside, below her bedroom window. She went over to look out, her eyes landing on Henry's car as the driver's side door opened and her man stepped out of the vehicle. Her smile only grew upon seeing him and she opened her window. "Good morning." She spoke in a tone, not much louder than her usual tone. The morning was so quiet, save for the far away roosters, so they could hear each other just fine from where they stood.
Henry closed his car door and looked up at her without a smile. "'Mornin', Abigail. Can we talk?"
"Are you alright, Mom?" Becky asked her mother about three hours later during their usual time for a breakfast rush in the cafe. It wasn't super busy, but it also was not as empty as it was the day that everyone found out the truth about Henry, Abigail, and Josephine.
"Hm?" Abigail, who was clearly distracted by something, responded to her daughter. "Oh. Yes. I'm alright." She said, though her tone could say otherwise.
"You seem upset." Rebecca told her as she bounced her baby sister on her hip. "Is it because of what happened yesterday? You can tell me. I'm a grown up now. You should be able to talk to me about grown up things."
The teen's mother softly chuckled at the reminder. "Yes, I know, sweetie. I guess I WAS thinking about yesterday. But mostly about how Henry is doing. He left early this morning and he wouldn't tell me where he was headed. He had a suitcase in his car with him. I'm a little worried."
"He didn't tell you where he was going?" Becky asked for a repeat to confirm she heard correctly.
"No, he didn't. But he told me NOT to worry and incidentally….that has only made me worry more." She chuckled again.
"Maybe he told Christopher where he was going."
"Hm…that's a good thought, sweetheart. I will ask him later." Abigail smiled at her before she continued to make the eggs on her pan.
Becky smiled at her mother as she sat down on the sofa with Josephine in her lap and she began to make silly faces at her sister.
Abigail continued to make breakfast as Florence and Molly came in through the cafe's backdoor to the kitchen. The cook's face softened a little as she looked up from the stove at her two old friends. "Can I help you, ladies?"
"Oh, Abigail, we are so sorry." Molly said immediately.
"I suppose it was wrong of us to make such a fuss about you and Henry….and Josephine." Florence added.
"We've spoken to Pastor Canfield about all this and he said some things that we did not consider and we truly apologize." The redhead explained.
"What did he say?" Becky asked from the couch out of curiosity.
"That we don't know what's happened behind closed doors and who are we to judge who loves each other….whether you're married or not." Florence looked at Abigail apologetically. "We really did not mean to cause you to resign as mayor, Abigail."
"Yes. Please reconsider." Molly begged. "You are the best mayor this town has had since…well since we all moved here. And Henry truly has changed. We trust that you will continue to make the right decisions for the town with or without him."
"Yes." Florence nodded in agreement.
"Well…You will have to convince the rest of the town to believe that." Abigail told them. "A lot of people were on your side yesterday." She pointed out before cracking a new egg into her pan.
"We will tell them that we were wrong." Mrs. Blakely stated.
"They really are in love." Rebecca told the other two women about Henry and her mother as she stood up with her sister and walked closer to the guests.
"And if it's any constellation, Henry offered to marry me the second he found out about Josephine, but I turned him down." Abigail told them.
"Why would you do that?" Florence asked, slightly flabbergasted considering the things Abigail had said about Henry the other day showed she truly did love him.
"Because I didn't want our marriage to only be about the baby. I wanted to know that it was about his feelings for me." She flipped an egg as she reminisced in the memories of him for the past few years. "Gosh, you have no idea what a roller coaster it has been with us. You only know a fragment of our story and the town knows even less."
"You are right. We didn't mean to be so….us." Molly admitted.
"We should have come to you first and just asked before telling people in town." Florence admitted. "Though…have you asked Henry how he met Beatrice?"
"Florence." Molly looked at her as if now was not the right time.
"No. Actually he never has." Abigail told them. "Why?"
"Oh….No reason." Florence said, trying not to gossip again, following Molly's expression when she looked at her.
Molly sighed, knowing that they would need to tell Abigail now anyways. "You know those three women that hang around the saloon?"
"Yes?" Abigail told them.
"Well…there is a reason that Beatrice gets along so well with them."
"Oh?" The mayor thought for a moment before she realized what she meant. "Oh."
"What does that mean?" Becky asked.
"Don't worry about it, sweetheart." Abigail said as she placed the eggs onto two plates along with a few sausage links. "I'm going to go wake your brother for breakfast." She removed her apron and hung it up on its hook before heading toward the stairs.
Once Abigail was out of sight, Florence and Molly looked at Josephine in Becky's arms. "She really is so beautiful." Florence said.
"We are so sorry, Rebecca, if we caused a riff in your family." Molly apologized to the teenager as well.
"Look at her." She smiled down at her baby sister. "How could we stay mad when she's here?"
Florence and Molly both smiled in agreement before they began to talk and make faces at the baby themselves.
"Oh…Where on Earth could he be?" Rosemary asked, pacing in front of Gowen Petroleum after she and Lee had gone to try and speak with him about trying to convince Abigail not to resign as mayor the day after her speech. "I KNEW we should have come here first. Why did I let you talk me into seeing Faith this morning?" She stopped pacing to look at her husband.
"Because, sweetheart. What's more important is making sure our unborn child is healthy." Lee tried to remind her.
"We could have stopped by, spoken to Henry, and THEN gone to see Faith." Rosemary told him.
"Maybe he's just not working today." Lee said before his wife gave him a dumbfounded look with a raised eyebrow. "No, you're right. Since when does that man NOT work?" Mr. Coulter chuckled.
"Are you looking for Mr. Gowen?" Robert asked as he walked by with the mailbag across his chest.
"Yes, Robert. Have you seen him?" Rosemary asked.
"Yes, ma'am. He left in his car this morning. Those strange ladies from the saloon went with him. Looked like he had some bags with him too." The boy said before searching through his mailbag and taking out an envelope or two. "Here you are, Mr. Coulter." He handed the man his mail and continued on his mailroute.
"Where would Henry be going with-" Rosemary let out an audible gasp before her voice weakened. "Oh no."
"Oh no what?" Lee asked her after placing his envelopes into the inner lining pocket of his jacket.
"He's running away." Rosemary said sadly before she looked furious. "Oh, Henry Gowen!"
"What?" Her husband asked, a bit confused as to how she jumped to that conclusion so fast.
"That man continues to always sabotage himself when things get a little sticky. Now he's run off with three prostitutes so he doesn't have to deal with all this drama and heartache. Oh, poor Abigail."
"Maybe that's not why he left." Lee tried to tell her. "I doubt Henry would just run off like that."
"Let's go and see Abigail. I want to make sure she's alright."
"Rosie."
"Come on." She said, grabbing her husband's hand and dragging him toward Abigail's Cafe. Lee allowed his wife to drag him as he slightly rolled his eyes and couldn't help but smile and notice that perhaps their unborn child gave his wife a newfound strength as he felt his arm's slight soreness while she dragged him. But he did not mention it.
When they entered the cafe's kitchen through the backdoor, Abigail and Minnie were just finishing up preparing the food before opening time.
"Oh, Abigail." Rosemary said before immediately hugging her friend who let out an unexpected squeak as the blonde hugged her too tight.
"Uh, Rosemary? What are you doing here?" Abigail managed to breathe out her words, her arms pinned to her sides as she almost dropped a spatula in her right hand.
The actress finally let go of the cook. "Don't you worry. We will personally go out and find him right now in Lee's car."
"We will?" Lee asked his wife.
"Find who?" Abigail chuckled with a bit of confusion as she straightened out her apron and dress with her spatula-less hand.
"Henry, of course." The younger woman replied.
"Oh, it's alright, Rosemary. He told me he was leaving." Abigail confessed.
"He-He did?" She asked.
"Yes."
"And you let him?"
"Well…Yes, Rosemary. He's not my property. I don't own him. He can do whatever he wants and go wherever he pleases." The cook chuckled a bit before looking at Minnie who smiled and they both continued what they were doing.
"So….you and him are over now? Just like that?" Rosemary asked sadly.
"What? No. Of course not. He's coming back." Abigail chuckled again.
"Are you sure? Robert said that he saw him with bags in his car." Rosemary informed her.
"No. It wasn't bags. It was ONE suitcase." Abigail corrected.
"No. It was bags and he brought the three prost-ladies of the night with him."
The cook stopped what she was doing and Minnie sent her a concerned look. The owner of the cafe set her knife down and turned to look at Rosemary again. "He did? Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Hm…" Abigail began to think for a second. "Well…As I said. He does not belong to me. He can do what he wants with whoever he-" She went back to the counter to chop carrots for the lunch rush later, the first chop louder than any of them had expected and they each jumped a bit.
"Oh! Abigail!" Rosemary said, almost wondering if she should duck for cover. "Do you want us to go find him and bring him back?"
"No. It's alright. He'll come back when he's ready." She took a deep breath and continued to chop, but this time with less force.
Three days had passed and no one had heard much from or about Henry. Abigail tried to keep her spirits up but had begun to wonder herself if she had reason to fear him not returning again. She had faith that he would come back and that there was a perfectly good explanation as to why he had not told her that the three courtesans were traveling with him, but hearing the whispers from the townspeople as she walked by them on the streets had admittedly began to get to her.
"I heard she might be pregnant again."
"What? Where did you hear that?"
"Around."
"I wouldn't doubt it. She is a terrible influence on our children."
"That's for sure."
"Do you think she meant it when she said she was going to resign?"
"I'm not sure. I hope not. Say what you want about her and Henry, but she really is a wonderful mayor."
"A wonderful mayor would not leave town for months and make Bill Avery take over their duties."
"Do you think her mother was even really sick? Or did she just leave to hide that she was pregnant?"
"I hadn't thought about that."
Abigail almost turned around to address the two women who were whispering behind a shelf in the mercantile. It took every strength she had not to let them know that she could hear them and to give them a piece of her mind when Becky lightly touched her mother's arm. "Just ignore them, Mama."
"Thank you, sweetheart. I am trying." The frustrated woman sent her daughter a slightly forced smile before picking up a few more eggs to place inside her basket.
The mother and daughter went up to the counter to pay for their groceries when the two gossipping ladies followed shortly after to pay for their things. "Good morning, Mrs. Stanton. Or is it Gowen now?" The brunette woman asked with a fake politeness.
Abigail opened her mouth to respond, but before she could, Rebecca spoke. "How are Frankie and Oliver? I haven't seen either of your sons since we were all in jail together." The teen sent the women a cheeky smile. "I also never got to thank them for, illegally, purchasing the alcohol that night. We didn't even ask them to do that. They just arrived at the farm with it themselves. Come to think of it, I never learned where they found it. I heard a rumor that it was hidden in their parents' houses, but it was never confirmed. You wouldn't know anything about that, would you? Being their mothers, I'm sure you two must have SOME idea where they could have had access to it. I'm sure that couldn't have been the case though. All homes were forced to give up their alcohol, weren't they?" She sent them both another smile before looking at her mother and then back at them. "Good day to you both." She took the basket from the counter after Abigail finished paying Ned for their things and she took her mother by the arm and led her back outside, proud of herself for what she had just done.
"Rebecca Stanton." Abigail said to her once they were down the steps of the mercantile.
"What? I thought that those two should remember that their families are not perfect either and that everyone makes mistakes." Becky shrugged. "That's all."
"That was very spiteful." Abigail was trying her best to hide the fact that she was actually quite impressed with her daughter's actions and even a bit proud herself. For the first time, Abigail had seen a bit of herself come out in her daughter and though she was overjoyed by it, she knew that it would be wrong of her not to try and parent the girl first. "Next time, let me handle it. Alright, darling?"
"You always take care of me. I just wanted to take care of you for once."
The woman's heart melted at the teen's words and all she could do was smile and place an arm around her as she kissed the side of Becky's head.
Just as she let her go, the stagecoach arrived at the drop off area and the teen turned her head to look at her mother. "Aren't you going to go and see if Henry is on it?"
"He drove his car, remember? And I don't want to keep getting my hopes up. Perhaps we are meant to spend most of our lives apart." The older woman watched her own feet as they walked and she soon heard the stagecoach pull away.
"Mama?"
"Yes, dear?"
"Look!" Becky said excitedly and Abigail raised her head to see her mother, in her wheelchair, and her father standing in front of his wife under the stagecoach awning. She was too speechless to say anything as she felt Becky's grip on her arm loosen until it was no longer there and the teen ran over toward her grandparents. "Grandma! Grandpa!" She hugged her grandfather first before leaning over to hug her grandmother.
Abigail finally joined them, her confusion fully setting in passed the shock. "It's so good to see you two, but may I ask…what are you doing here?"
Behind her mother's wheelchair, Henry was crouching down to check on her parents' suitcases and he stood with a smile. "I invited them."
Abigail's confused smile turned into an overjoyed grin and she went to him, giving him the biggest hug he's ever received. "Oh, Henry!"
"Hello, Abigail." He smiled as he hugged her back.
"Sorry to have kept him so long." Jedidiah said. "We needed some help packing."
"And Henry was wonderful. He helped us find some men to help bring everything else." Vivian told her.
"Everything else?" Abigail asked but before anyone could answer her, Henry's car pulled up to park in the stagecoach's spot and four men got out before starting to unload the car of more and more suitcases that were in the back of the car and tied to the top of it. "What's this?"
"We are moving to Hope Valley." Vivian said with a big grin.
"You're what?"
"We are moving into Henry's." Jedidiah replied.
"You are?" Becky asked excitedly.
"Temporarily." Henry added. "Then once our home is built, they will be moving in with us."
"Henry, what are you saying?" Abigail wondered, feeling both overwhelmed and gleeful at the same time.
"I bought us a piece of land and we are building our own home. We will have enough rooms for the kids and your parents and we can bring their chickens here. They'll be closer to you and you won't need to worry about them."
Abigail looked at him with so much love, resting a hand up on his cheek. "This is why you left? To kidnap my parents?" She joked.
"Yes. Well, that and-"
"Everything seems to be in order, Gowen." One of the men that finished emptying the car said. "Anything else?"
"No. You are good to go. Thank you for your help, Damien."
The two men shook hands and Damien and his crew got back into Henry's car and drove away.
"You let them borrow your car?" Becky asked.
"I let them KEEP my car."
"You what?" Abigail jumped in again.
"I sold it to pay for the land." He told them.
"Oh, Henry. You didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to. For you. And our family. I want a fresh start for us and I want us all to be together. You, me, the kids, your parents. And your brothers can come and visit any time." He took off his bowler hat as he continued. "And you shouldn't resign as mayor. If it's really what you want to do, then I support that, but only if it is what you want. Don't quit because of me or the people in this town. It is time you got to be selfish, Abigail."
She softly smiled at him before leaning in to kiss him on the cheek. "Let me think about it another day or two. The Town Council is having a meeting after the Summer Festival and I will make my final decision then." The others understood and all nodded before Abigail ushered them back to the cafe so she could feed them after their long trip and they made sure Cody was still doing okay with Josephine as he watched her in the kitchen. His spirits also brightened at the news and the sight of his grandparents and Henry as they arrived.
Abigail took the next few days to really ponder her decision on resigning as the mayor. Henry gave her her space to think about it, doing his best not to bring up the subject to overwhelm or pressure her. She appreciated his silence on the matter and with just a few glances every now and then, she could tell when they were both thinking about the situation at the same time, but he still kept quiet and she felt her love for him growing as she recognized the growth in him as he knew how to give her her time instead of giving her his impatience that he once had in the past.
Main Street was already flooded with the children running toward games before they had even opened or started the Festival. The sounds of the happy townspeople outside made Abigail joyous as if things were finally going back to normal although she knew that after her announcement to the Council tonight that things would NOT be. She tried her best not to dwell on it as she cooked breakfast for her family late that morning, realizing just how late she had slept in considering she was so overgrown with her thoughts.
It wasn't until halfway through the Festival that Abigail realized how rewarding it was to have been the mayor to such a special town. This was where she had made a home for herself and her first family. This is where she stayed even after one of the worst tragedies she's ever faced. This is where the town came together to support her and the women who fought to keep their homes after their husbands died. Everyone in Hope Valley thrived when faced with hardships and she would let them and herself down if she resigned. She still had so much to offer as mayor and so many ideas ran through her head on how to keep the town going and safe for the future of their kids. She recalled a time when everyone in Hope Valley hated following Henry's orders as mayor, but they eventually grew to tolerate him. She knew that if they could get over that then they should be able to get over their mayor being with him and having a child with him.
Henry was right. It was her turn to be selfish.
After having watched the Tug Of War games between the men and the children, Abigail made her way to the stage they had placed in front of the mercantile on Main Street for the entertainment and she cleared her throat. "May I have everyone's attention, please?" She called out once the ruckus from Tug Of War had calmed down.
Rosemary, in the crowd, gently took hold of Lee's forearm as she noticed this might be it. She had spent the whole night before in bed, ranting to her husband about how she wished that Abigail would reconsider resigning. Lee, half asleep then, told his wife to just breathe and allow their friend to do what's best for her and Henry. Although Rosemary agreed, she knew that it would be hard to vote for anyone else following Mayor Stanton.
Once she had everyone's attention, Abigail continued to speak. "I know that not very many of you approve of me or my family at the moment, but I just wanted to say that…though I was going to wait until the Council meeting tonight to make my decision, that I have finally made up my mind." She looked around the crowd, her eyes quickly seeing the Coulters, and then Little Jack in Elizabeth's arms, followed by Pastor Canfield and Minnie, and soon she spotted her own children, her heart melting at the sight of them. "After my Noah and Peter died, I wasn't sure I would ever find a purpose again. Nor another family. But I am lucky. I have found both. Not only do I love being mayor and running my cafe. But I love being there for the people of this town. I have realized that when I cook for you or when I sit up in that mayor's office, making big and difficult decisions to keep this town afloat, I do them as a thank you to Hope Valley every day. A thank you for taking my family in when we were new here. A thank you for being there for me when I had no one after the mining accident. A thank you for supporting me in adopting my new beautiful children and a thank you for supporting your first woman mayor when other towns would have laughed me out the door. I cannot and WILL not step down as mayor here. I know each and every one of you. You are all kind and loving and, after some time, forgiving. You have always taken the time to adjust and find kindness in new, unknown things and I know that right now…none of you are happy with me for loving Henry. You are afraid that I am not the same person now that you know the truth about us. But hear me when I say….I am still me. Nothing about me has changed. Nothing about my decisions as mayor will ever change and I want to continue to take care of all of you. But I need to take care of myself too. And in order to do that, I need to choose what I want for once. And what I want is to stay with Henry and love my family WHILE I continue to run my cafe and this town as mayor." She went to Becky who was holding Josephine near the stage and she gently took her baby from her oldest before going back to center stage. "This beautiful girl will not change my decision and neither will any of your opinions about me or Henry Gowen….Thank you."
Abigail turned to step off the stage, but before she could, Henry stepped up onto it and went to the front of the stage too. "Abigail, if you could stay here for a moment, please?" He turned to his left to see that Abigail did stay onstage and turned to look at him. He cleared his throat and looked back at all of the townspeople staring up at him, discomfort immediately sinking in, but he fought it and continued to speak."I'm not very good at public speaking. Or being around crowds of people. I guess that's one of the reasons that I didn't make it as mayor myself. Well, that and I was just a lousy leader. But that is not here nor there. Anyway…" He uncomfortably cleared his throat and looked back at Abigail, knowing that looking into her eyes would help him get his words out in front of the crowd better than looking at them would. "Abigail, I left you last week, because I had to get something."
"You had to get what?" Rosemary asked from the crowd before biting her tongue when she remembered that he was not speaking to her and Lee kindly shushed her.
"I had to get your parents' blessing to ask you to marry me." Henry said, almost as if he didn't even head Rosemary's voice.
The crowd let out a soft, but quite audible in unison, gasp.
Abigail's heart jumped in her chest and she adjusted Josephine in her arms as butterflies danced in her stomach. "And did you get it?" She asked him, trying to remain calm, though on the inside, she wanted to cry.
"Yes, I did. And last night, I received our blessing from Cody and Rebecca." He told her, taking a quick step toward her to gently take her free hand in his.
The mayor's eyes then welled up with tears as she turned her head to see Cody and Becky smiling up at them and her heart began to dance along with her butterflies.
"I love you, Abigail. I have loved you for years. I was too ashamed of myself to be with you and knew that you deserved better than me. But the thing about you is that you have this way of making people love themselves too. I never thought I could ever forgive myself for my past or the things I did. I never saw myself as good enough for you. But you always remind me that I am human and that I AM good enough. And I finally believe it. I am fully yours. I always have been. So I am up here right now…hoping…that whether we have Hope Valley's blessing or not….that you marry me. You make me a better person and I want to be better every day for you….and for myself….and for this town. So will you, Abigail? Will you marry me?"
Speechless, Abigail looked out at the crowd and she finally felt the tears run down her face as she realized this was the quietest she had ever heard the town in one gathering. She had expected some to whisper or to protest, but instead, they all stared…as if waiting patiently for her answer, though she could not tell what they wished her to say.
"Say-...say yes!" Someone finally shouted, breaking the warm silence.
"Say yes, Mayor Stanton!" Another followed.
"You have our blessing, Abigail!" Molly said, then was followed by a cheer from the crowd.
Abigail let out a breath of relief and looked back at Henry who sent her a soft, hopeful smile and her tears fell heavily as she nodded. "Yes! Yes, I'll marry you, Henry." She sniffled and let out a soft chuckle before letting go of his hand to hug him with one arm as the other held Josie tighter.
Henry hugged her back before gently kissing her and then kissing Josephine's head and Cody and Becky ran up onto the stage to join them in the hug as the town continued to cheer.
Abigail continued to serve the town as mayor as Gowen Petroleum and the cafe thrived. Becky started her own architecture company and Cody went on to succeed in school before he earned a spot on one of the first professional baseball leagues near the valley. Abigail's parents lived in and loved Hope Valley as they spent the rest of their lives closer to their daughter and her family and they taught Josie everything they knew until the day they both passed away. Vivian lived a full life in her chair and Jedidiah finally had the chance to retire from hard work and enjoyed his days as nothing more than a loving grandfather.
Henry and Abigail continued to love and support each other through everything. He was a wonderful husband and father and they fell more in love every day. The town grew to love them as a couple and admitted that they thrived together as a team. Lee and Rosemary ended up having three more children after their first and Elizabeth went on to win several teachers' awards and continued to be a wonderful mother to Little Jack. Her heart remained open to new love every day until she finally found it in a newcomer to town named Xavier and they had two children of their own. Molly and Florence found love in each other and Hope Valley's heart grew with the importance of kindness, love, and decency amongst humans, no matter our differences.
The End.
