Chapter 30: A Delicate Balance
Impatience simmered in the air as Damon, Stefan, and Bella waited outside the lawyer's office. Finally, the door swung open, revealing Elena with a triumphant grin and a stack of paperwork clutched in her hand.
"It's done," she announced, relief coloring her voice.
"Excellent," Stefan said, stepping forward to take the documents. "Let's get down to business."
Elena playfully blocked his path. "Hold on, Stefan, Bella. Let's strategize inside."
Damon scoffed. "Seriously? What are we, teenagers? Can't we all strategize together?"
"One of us might act like one," Stefan quipped, earning a playful shove from his brother.
Elena rolled her eyes. "Alright, Damon, how about this? If I let you in, will you promise to keep your... marital activities confined to the bedroom?"
A mock look of shock crossed Damon's face. "Where's the fun in that?"
Elena raised an eyebrow. "Seems you've forgotten your promise to cut the snark by 25%."
Damon grumbled under his breath. "Fine, fine. No vampire romps in the living room, and any strip shows are strictly bedroom affairs. But 20% snark reduction is the best I can do."
Elena stifled a laugh and glanced at Stefan. "I'll take it." She gestured towards the door. "Then, Damon, would you like to come in?"
Inside the parlor, the weight of the situation settled on them. Bella, ever the strategist, wasted no time.
"Alright, Elena," she began, unfurling a map of Mystic Falls. "We need you to make a list of all the men in town you find attractive."
Stefan frowned. "Why are we revisiting this part of the plan?"
Bella, ever patient, explained, "Because Katherine and you seem to have a similar type. This way, we can narrow down the suspects who might be keeping her company."
Damon snorted. "Don't tell me you actually fell for Katherine's act, Stefan. We're talking about Katherine Pierce - commitment-phobic, can't resist a bad boy with a pulse. You think she's pining over you while you moon over her doppelganger? Absolutely not. She's probably got some unsuspecting guy wrapped around her finger right now."
Stefan remained unconvinced, but silent.
"Fine," he conceded. "Just don't show me the list."
"Good call," Damon chimed in. "My ego can only take so much."
Elena rolled her eyes, trying to maintain order. "This is supposed to be a serious discussion, guys."
Damon shot back, "Twenty percent snark, remember?" He earned a playful swat from Bella.
Bella straightened, her voice firm. "Focus, Elena. We need to send Jenna and Jeremy away for a while. I know it's difficult, but—"
Elena understood this would be the toughest part. "But how can we explain it to everyone?"
Bella tapped her chin thoughtfully. "Tell them you're sending Jeremy to a specialized boarding school for troubled teens. Say his recent behavior has escalated, and you and Jenna have decided to take drastic action."
"That could work," Stefan mused.
While hesitant, Elena agreed. "Alright, fine. But what else is in this plan?"
"You'll be moving into a safe house," Bella explained, pointing to a secluded location on the map. "Once we identify Katherine's current squeeze, we turn him. It'll be a major blow to her."
A flicker of doubt crossed Elena's face. "What makes you think we can convince some random guy that Katherine's evil?"
Bella offered a tight smile. "Let's just say I have a little help lined up".
The tension in the kitchen was thick as Elena, Damon, and Bella huddled around the table, poring over the list Elena had meticulously compiled. The rhythmic click of Elena's pen punctuated the silence.
Suddenly, Damon slammed a photo down on the table, startling them both. "Oh man, how could I have missed this?" he muttered, frustration lacing his voice.
"What is it?" Elena asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Damn it all, it makes perfect sense," Damon continued, running a hand through his hair. "They both arrived around the same time. It was right under our noses the whole time."
Elena's eyebrows furrowed. "Who are you talking about, Damon?"
"Mason Lockwood," he said, his voice grim.
Elena's breath caught in her throat. "Mason? Are you sure?"
"Almost positive," Damon confirmed. "What does he look like again?"
Elena fumbled for her phone, a sense of dread settling in her stomach. Pulling up a recent picture of Mason, she handed it to Bella.
Bella scanned the photo, her eyes widening in recognition. "Oh yeah, that definitely has to be him," she blurted, a playful whistle escaping her lips. "He is undeniably handsome."
A possessive growl rumbled in Damon's chest. "Hey!" he exclaimed, a sharp edge creeping into his voice. He wasn't exactly thrilled with his wife finding another man attractive, even if it was just a picture.
Bella, sensing his possessiveness, offered a placating smile. "Easy there, tiger," she cooed, leaning into him. "You know you're the only one for me."
"Damn right," Damon grumbled, wrapping his arm around her waist.
Elena rolled her eyes at their display of affection. Now wasn't the time for a lovers' quarrel. "Alright, so… what do we do now?" she asked, clearing her throat to get their attention.
A slow, predatory grin spread across Damon's face. "Now, Elena," he said, his voice dripping with mischief, "we go catch ourselves a werewolf."
