The room was dimly lit, with the soft glow of moonlight filtering through the curtains. Jay Halstead was asleep in bed, his breathing steady and peaceful. Hailey Upton lay beside him, her eyes closed but her mind restless.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed on the nightstand, breaking the silence.
Hailey's eyes snapped open. She reached for her phone, careful not to wake Jay. The screen illuminated her face as she read the message:
"Last night was amazing. Can we do it again?"
Her heart raced. She glanced at Jay, who stirred slightly but remained asleep. Quietly, she slipped out of bed, taking her phone with her. She tiptoed to the bathroom and closed the door behind her.
Leaning against the sink, Hailey stared at her reflection in the mirror. She took a deep breath and typed a response: "I can't. It was a mistake." She hit send and set the phone down, feeling a mix of guilt and relief. After splashing water on her face, she returned to the bedroom.
Hailey climbed back into bed, her movements slow and deliberate. She lay down, facing away from Jay, her mind still racing. Jay stirred again, this time rolling over and draping an arm around her.
"Everything okay?" he asked sleepily.
Hailey forced a smile, even though he couldn't see it. "Yeah, just a bad dream."
Jay pulled her closer, and Hailey closed her eyes, hoping to find some peace in his embrace.
The morning sun streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow over the apartment. Jay was in the kitchen, making coffee. Hailey walked in, her movements slow and deliberate. She avoided eye contact with Jay, her mind still preoccupied with the events of the previous night.
"Morning, Hailey. Coffee?" Jay offered.
Hailey nodded, but her smile was faint and forced. "Morning. Yeah, thanks."
Jay handed her a mug, watching her closely. He could sense something was off. "You okay? You seem a bit… distant."
Hailey took a sip of her coffee, avoiding his gaze. "I'm fine. Just didn't sleep well."
Jay stepped closer, concern etched on his face. "Is it about that bad dream you mentioned?"
Hailey hesitated, then shook her head. "No, it's nothing. Really."
Jay wasn't convinced, but he didn't push. He knew Hailey well enough to give her space when she needed it. "Okay. Just know I'm here if you want to talk."
Hailey nodded, appreciating his understanding but feeling the weight of her secret. "Thanks, Jay."
She turned away, focusing on her coffee. Jay watched her, worried but unsure how to help. The silence between them felt heavy, filled with unspoken words and unresolved tension.
Jay and Hailey walked into the bustling 21st District. Jay reached out to take Hailey's hand, but she subtly pulled away and headed straight to her desk. Jay watched her, a mix of confusion and concern on his face.
The rest of the Intelligence Unit noticed the interaction. Adam Ruzek raised an eyebrow and exchanged a look with Kim Burgess.
"Did I miss something? What's up with those two?"
Kim shrugged, but her eyes followed Hailey as she sat down and immediately buried herself in paperwork.
"No idea, but something's definitely off."
Kevin Atwater joined the conversation, glancing between Jay and Hailey.
"They were fine yesterday. Maybe they had a fight?"
Jay, overhearing the comments, sighed and headed to his own desk. He caught Hailey's eye, but she quickly looked away, focusing intently on her work.
"Alright, team, let's focus. We've got a new case," Voight said as he entered.
The team gathered around, but the tension between Jay and Hailey was palpable. Voight noticed but decided to address it later. For now, there was work to be done.
Later that day, Hailey was at her locker, changing out of her tactical gear. She heard the door open and glanced up to see Jay entering, his expression determined.
"Hailey, we need to talk," Jay said.
Hailey sighed, her shoulders tensing. She turned back to her locker, trying to ignore him.
"Not now, Jay. I'm busy."
Jay stepped closer, his voice soft but insistent. "No, we need to talk now. What's going on with you? You've been distant all morning."
Hailey slammed her locker shut, the sound echoing in the room. She turned to face him, her eyes flashing with frustration.
"I told you, it's nothing. Just drop it."
Jay didn't back down, his concern growing. "I can't just drop it, Hailey. I care about you. If something's wrong, I want to help."
Hailey's anger flared, and she took a step towards him, her voice rising. "You want to help? Then stop pushing me! I need space, Jay. Just leave me alone!"
Jay was taken aback by her outburst, hurt flashing across his face. He opened his mouth to respond, but Hailey didn't give him a chance. She brushed past him, storming out of the locker room.
Jay stood there, feeling a mix of confusion and pain. He watched the door swing shut behind her, realizing that whatever was bothering Hailey, it was more serious than he thought.
Hailey walked briskly through the bullpen, her face a mask of frustration. Voight, standing near his office, noticed her demeanor. He watched her for a moment, then called out, "Upton, my office. Now."
Hailey hesitated, then nodded and followed him into the office. Voight closed the door behind her, creating a private space.
"What's going on, Hailey? You've been off all day," Voight said, leaning against his desk.
Hailey took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. "It's nothing, Sarge. Just a rough night."
Voight wasn't convinced. He stepped closer, his voice softening. "I've known you long enough to know when something's bothering you. Talk to me."
Hailey looked away, struggling with her emotions. She finally met his gaze, her eyes filled with a mix of guilt and frustration.
"It's personal, Voight. I don't want to get into it."
Voight nodded, understanding but still concerned.
"Alright, but whatever it is, don't let it affect your work. We're a team, and we need you at your best."
Hailey nodded, appreciating his support. "I know. I'll be fine."
Voight gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Good. If you need anything, you know where to find me."
Hailey nodded again and left the office, feeling a bit lighter but still burdened by her secret.
Voight stood by his desk, watching through the glass as Jay walked past. He noticed the tension in Jay's posture and decided it was time to intervene. He opened the door and called out,
"Halstead, in my office."
Jay looked up, surprised, but nodded and headed into the office. Voight closed the door behind him, creating a private space.
Jay stood there, trying to keep his composure, but the weight of the morning's events was too much.
"What's going on, Jay? You look like you're carrying the world on your shoulders," Voight said.
Jay's resolve crumbled. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he quickly wiped them away, but it was too late. Voight stepped closer, his voice gentle.
"Hey, it's okay. Talk to me."
Jay took a deep breath, his voice breaking as he spoke. "It's Hailey. Something's wrong, and she won't talk to me. I don't know what to do."
Voight nodded, understanding the depth of Jay's concern.
"Sometimes people need space to figure things out. But that doesn't mean you stop caring. Just be there for her when she's ready."
Jay nodded, tears streaming down his face. Voight placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"You're a good man, Jay. Don't forget that."
Jay took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "Thanks, Voight. I just… I don't want to lose her."
Voight gave him a firm nod. "You won't. Just give her time."
Jay nodded again, feeling a bit more grounded.
The case was one of the hardest the team had faced in a while. The details were gruesome, and the pressure to solve it quickly was immense.
Hailey tried to focus on the task at hand, but her mind kept drifting back to the previous night. She could feel Kim's eyes on her, watching her closely.
Kim had always been perceptive, and today was no different. She noticed Hailey's distracted demeanor and decided to confront her. During a brief lull in the action, Kim approached Hailey at her desk.
"Hailey, can we talk?" Kim asked, her tone serious.
Hailey looked up, trying to mask her anxiety. "Sure, what's up?"
Kim led her to a quieter corner of the bullpen. "Something's going on with you. I can see it. You need to tell me what's happening."
Hailey hesitated, her eyes darting around the room. "It's nothing, Kim. Just a lot on my mind."
Kim's expression hardened. "Don't lie to me, Hailey. I know you too well. Spill it."
Hailey felt the walls closing in. She knew Kim wouldn't let this go. Taking a deep breath, she finally admitted,
"I… I had a one-night stand. And now it's messing everything up."
Kim's eyes widened in shock. "What? With who?"
Hailey shook her head. "It doesn't matter. It was a mistake."
Kim's shock quickly turned to anger. "How could you do this, Hailey? Jay doesn't deserve this."
Before Hailey could respond, Kim's hand flew out, slapping her across the face. The sound echoed through the room, drawing the attention of their colleagues. Hailey stood there, stunned, her cheek stinging.
Kim's eyes were filled with a mix of anger and disappointment. "You need to fix this, Hailey. For Jay's sake and for yours."
Hailey nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "I know. I will."
Kim turned and walked away, leaving Hailey to grapple with the consequences of her actions.
The tension in the bullpen was thick after Kim slapped Hailey. Jay, who had been in another part of the building, walked in just as the slap echoed through the room.
He saw Hailey standing there, her cheek red and eyes filled with tears, and Kim storming away.
Jay's heart pounded as he quickly crossed the room to Hailey. "Hailey, what happened?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.
Hailey shook her head, unable to speak.
Jay turned to see Kim, who was now at her desk, her face a mix of anger and regret. He marched over to her, his own anger rising.
"Kim, what the hell? Why did you slap my wife?" Jay demanded, his voice low but intense.
Kim looked up at him, her eyes hard.
"Jay, you need to talk to Hailey. There's something you need to know."
Jay's confusion deepened. "What are you talking about?"
Kim sighed, her anger giving way to frustration. "Just talk to her, Jay. She needs to tell you herself."
Jay glanced back at Hailey, who was now sitting at her desk, her head in her hands. He felt a knot of dread forming in his stomach.
Without another word, he walked back to Hailey and gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Hailey, we need to talk. Now," he said softly.
Hailey looked up at him, her eyes filled with guilt and fear. She nodded slowly, knowing that the moment she had been dreading had finally come.
Jay led Hailey into the locker room, closing the door behind them.
The room was quiet, the tension between them palpable. Jay turned to face Hailey, his eyes filled with a mix of confusion and hurt.
"Hailey, what is going on? Kim said there's something I need to know," Jay said, his voice trembling slightly.
Hailey took a deep breath, her heart pounding.
"Jay, I… I made a mistake. A huge mistake."
Jay's brow furrowed. "What kind of mistake?"
Tears welled up in Hailey's eyes. "I had a one-night stand. It was a moment of weakness, and I regret it more than anything."
Jay's face went pale, and he took a step back, as if the words had physically struck him.
"You… you what?"
Hailey's tears flowed freely now.
"I'm so sorry, Jay. It meant nothing. I was just… I don't know what I was thinking."
Jay's hands clenched into fists, his body shaking with emotion. "How could you do this, Hailey? After everything we've been through?"
Hailey reached out to him, but he pulled away.
"Jay, please. It was a mistake. I love you."
Jay shook his head, tears streaming down his face. "I can't do this right now."
He turned to his locker, yanking it open and pulling out his bag. Hailey watched, her heart breaking.
"Jay, please don't leave. We can work through this."
Jay slung his bag over his shoulder, his eyes filled with pain and anger. "I need some space, Hailey. I can't even look at you right now."
He stormed out of the locker room, Hailey following close behind. "Jay, wait!"
Jay spun around, his voice rising. "Just leave me alone, Hailey!"
He turned and stormed downstairs, leaving Hailey standing there, tears streaming down her face. The rest of the unit watched in stunned silence as Jay disappeared from view.
Kim approached Hailey, her expression softening. "Hailey, what happened?"
Hailey wiped her tears, her voice barely above a whisper. "I told him the truth. And now I think I might have lost him."
Jay sat in his truck, parked in a secluded spot away from the 21st District. His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles white. Tears streamed down his face as he sobbed uncontrollably, the weight of Hailey's confession crushing him.
He slammed his fists against the steering wheel in frustration and pain, the sound echoing in the confined space.
"Why, Hailey? Why?" he cried out, his voice breaking.
Lost in his anguish, Jay didn't notice the figure approaching his truck.
The passenger door opened, and someone climbed in. Jay looked up, startled, to see Kim Burgess sitting beside him.
Without a word, she reached out and pulled him into a comforting embrace, bringing his head to her chest.
"It's okay, Jay. Let it out," Kim whispered, her voice soothing.
Jay clung to her, his sobs growing louder. Kim held him tightly, her hand gently stroking his hair.
She could feel his pain, and her heart ached for him.
"I don't know what to do, Kim. I feel so lost," Jay admitted between sobs.
Kim continued to hold him, offering silent support. "You're not alone, Jay. We're all here for you. Take your time to process this. It's okay to feel hurt and angry."
Jay nodded, his tears soaking into Kim's shirt.
Kim held Jay tightly as his sobs gradually subsided. She gently stroked his hair, offering silent comfort. After a while, Jay pulled back slightly, his eyes red and swollen from crying.
Kim reached into her pocket and pulled out a tissue, carefully wiping away his tears.
"Jay, you need to go home and get some rest," Kim said softly. "You can't deal with this right now if you're exhausted."
Jay shook his head, his voice hoarse. "I don't know if I can face going home. Everything there reminds me of Hailey."
Kim placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"I know it's hard, but you need to take care of yourself. Go home, get some sleep, and give yourself time to process everything. We'll handle things here."
Jay nodded slowly, feeling the weight of her words. "Thanks, Kim. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Kim gave him a small, encouraging smile. "That's what family is for, Jay. We're here for you, no matter what."
Jay took a deep breath, feeling a bit more grounded. He started the truck and gave Kim a grateful look. "I'll try to get some rest. Thanks again."
Kim nodded and stepped out of the truck, watching as Jay drove away.
The bullpen was still buzzing with tension when Hank Voight walked out of his office.
His eyes scanned the room, landing on Hailey. He could see the turmoil in her expression and knew something serious was going on.
"Upton, my office. Now," Voight ordered, his voice leaving no room for argument.
Hailey swallowed hard and followed Voight into his office.
As soon as the door closed behind them, Voight turned to her, his face a mask of controlled anger.
"What the hell is going on, Hailey?" Voight demanded, his voice rising. "I just had Jay in here, and he's a mess. Now I hear you had a one-night stand? What were you thinking?"
Hailey flinched at his words, tears welling up in her eyes. "I made a mistake, Voight. I know I screwed up."
Voight's anger didn't abate. "A mistake? You think that's good enough? Jay is out there falling apart because of you. How could you do this to him, to the team?"
Hailey's voice broke as she tried to explain. "I wasn't thinking clearly. It was a moment of weakness, and I regret it more than anything."
Voight took a deep breath, trying to rein in his temper. "You need to fix this, Hailey. Jay needs time, but he also needs to know you're committed to making things right. You can't let this destroy everything you've built together."
Hailey nodded, tears streaming down her face. "I will, Voight. I'll do whatever it takes to make it right."
Voight's expression softened slightly, but his voice remained stern.
"Good. Now get out there and do your job. And don't let this happen again."
Hailey nodded and left the office, feeling the weight of Voight's words.
The weight of the situation was becoming too much for Hailey. The guilt and stress were overwhelming, and she felt like she was drowning. In a moment of weakness, she pulled out her phone and sent a text to her one-night stand:
"I can't stop thinking about last night. Can we meet again?"
As she hit send, she didn't notice Adam walking by. He caught a glimpse of her phone screen and saw the message. His face turned red with anger, and he stormed over to her desk.
"Hailey, what the hell are you doing?" Adam's voice was low but filled with fury.
Hailey looked up, startled. "Adam, it's not what you think."
Adam crossed his arms, his eyes blazing.
"Not what I think? You're texting the guy you cheated on Jay with! How could you do this to him?"
The rest of the unit turned their attention to the confrontation, the tension in the room escalating. Hailey felt the weight of their stares and the judgment in Adam's eyes.
"I know I messed up, Adam. I just… I don't know how to handle this," Hailey admitted, her voice breaking.
Adam shook his head, his anger barely contained. "You need to get your head straight, Hailey. Jay deserves better than this."
Hailey nodded, tears streaming down her face. "I know. I'm trying to fix it."
Adam took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. "Then start by cutting off contact with that guy. Focus on making things right with Jay."
Voight emerged from his office, his expression stern and commanding. He scanned the room, taking in the worried faces of his team.
"Kim, Adam, I want you to go check on Jay," Voight ordered, his voice leaving no room for argument.
Kim and Adam nodded, ready to follow his instructions.
As they moved to leave, Hailey started to get up from her desk, her face filled with concern.
"Hailey, sit down," Voight barked, his tone sharp.
Hailey froze, her eyes wide with surprise. "But, Sarge, I need to—"
Voight cut her off, his voice firm. "I said sit down. Kim and Adam will handle it."
Kim and Adam exchanged a glance before heading out the door. Hailey sank back into her chair, feeling a mix of frustration and helplessness.
She watched as her colleagues left to check on Jay, her heart aching with worry.
Kim and Adam arrived at Jay's apartment, their concern growing with each passing moment. They knocked on the door, but there was no response. Adam knocked again, louder this time.
"Jay, it's us. Open up," Adam called out, but still, there was no answer.
Kim exchanged a worried glance with Adam. "He's not answering. Do you think something's wrong?"
Adam frowned, his concern deepening. "I hope not. Let's check under the mat."
Kim nodded and bent down, lifting the mat to reveal a spare key. She picked it up and unlocked the door, pushing it open slowly.
"Jay? We're coming in," Kim announced as they stepped inside.
The apartment was eerily quiet. They moved through the rooms, calling out for Jay, but there was no sign of him. Kim's worry turned to fear as they reached the spare bedroom and found Jay lying on the bed, his face buried in his hands.
"Jay," Kim said softly, approaching him. "Are you okay?"
Jay looked up, his eyes red and swollen from crying. "I don't know, Kim. I feel like my whole world is falling apart."
Adam stepped closer, his expression filled with concern. "We're here for you, man. You don't have to go through this alone."
Jay nodded, grateful for their presence. "Thanks, guys. I just… I don't know how to deal with this."
Kim sat down beside him, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Take it one step at a time, Jay. We're here to help you through it."
Adam nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we'll get through this together."
Jay lay in the spare bedroom, staring at the ceiling. Sleep eluded him as his mind replayed the events of the day over and over. He felt a deep ache in his chest, the pain of betrayal and confusion keeping him awake. He tossed and turned, but nothing seemed to help.
In the living room, Kim and Adam sat in silence, their concern for Jay growing with each passing minute. Kim glanced at the clock and sighed. "I'm going to check on him," she said, standing up.
Adam nodded. "I'll stay here in case he needs anything."
Kim walked quietly to the spare bedroom and peeked inside. She saw Jay lying there, clearly struggling. She decided to head to the bathroom, hoping to find something that might help him relax.
Opening the medicine cabinet, she found a bottle of over-the-counter sleep aids. She took it and returned to the bedroom.
"Jay," she said softly, sitting on the edge of the bed. "I found some sleep aids. They might help you get some rest."
Jay looked up at her, his eyes filled with exhaustion and gratitude. "Thanks, Kim. I don't know if I can sleep, but I'll try."
Kim handed him the bottle and watched as he took a couple of pills with a glass of water. "Just try to relax, okay? We're here for you."
Jay nodded, feeling a bit more at ease with Kim's presence. "Thanks, Kim. I appreciate it."
Kim gave him a reassuring smile. "Get some rest, Jay. We'll be here when you wake up."
She left the room, closing the door quietly behind her. Jay lay back down, hoping the sleep aids would help him find some peace.
Jay woke up after a restless sleep, the effects of the sleep aids having worn off. He felt groggy and emotionally drained but knew he couldn't stay in bed forever.
He got up and made his way downstairs, hoping to find some semblance of normalcy.
In the kitchen, he opened the fridge and grabbed a beer, popping the cap off and taking a long drink. The cold liquid did little to soothe the turmoil inside him, but it was something.
Kim and Adam, who had stayed the night to keep an eye on him, were sitting in the living room. They heard Jay in the kitchen and exchanged a concerned glance before walking over to him.
"Jay, it's a bit early for a beer, don't you think?" Adam said gently, trying to keep the mood light.
Jay looked at them, his eyes tired and filled with pain. "The sleep aids wore off. I couldn't sleep," he admitted, taking another sip of his beer.
Kim stepped closer, her voice soft with concern. "Jay, we're worried about you. You need to take care of yourself."
Jay sighed, feeling the weight of their concern. "I know. It's just… everything feels so messed up right now."
Adam placed a reassuring hand on Jay's shoulder. "We're here for you, man. Whatever you need, we'll help you through it."
Jay nodded, grateful for their support.
"Thanks, guys. I appreciate it."
