Book Twenty-Six: The Rival Alpha
Mercedes smoothed down the purple sundress that literally made Lilka stop speaking. It clung to her in the best way, showing off the figure she never really let people see. Her hair fell over her shoulders in curls, and her make up was subtle in a way she never knew possible. Stacey had applied it in a way where if Mercedes didn't know any better she wouldn't think she was wearing anything.
As Stacey led her into a grand room where Sam was seated at the head of the table. All eyes were on her as she was led to the seat next to him.
"Just hold your head up high, you look beautiful." Stacey whispered.
Mercedes gave a subtle nod as Sam stood, pulling out her chair.
Merce I can sense his wolf…they are both very impressed with us.
We are very impressed with them as well.
Sam held his hand out to her. "Please join us."
Mercedes hesitated for a moment before taking his hand, a spark shooting through her as she did. She smiled thanking him as he helped her into her seat.
Letting go of her hand Sam cleared his throat. "I want to thank you all for coming to this brunch, to welcome Ms. Jones. This is a way to try and come together with all these new changes. I expect you to treat our guest with the same respect as you would treat each other."
As Sam took a seat Stevie walked into the room, stopping short when his eyes landed on Mercedes. "Well damn, is this how they make them at Bloodmoon? Because how are you sweetheart?"
"Stevie!" Sam growled.
Don't let him speak to our mate like that!
Sam ignored Manus and cleared his throat. "Stevie, grab a seat. Now."
Stevie moved to sit next to Mercedes but stopped as Sam eyed him. Holding his hands up, Stevie moved to sit next to Jake.
Mercedes' eyes darted to a few of the pack members who were giggling and looking her way. It reminded her of the things that happened in her pack.
Its okay Merce, they aren't like back home.
Sam offered her a smile. "As I was saying, Ms. Jones will be staying with us and training with me. We are going to try and show unity. I know you all are worried about the Rogues, and let me assure you. This pack is my first priority and I will do what I must to ensure the safety of us all."
Jake stood, nodding at Sam. "We really are happy to have you here and speaking on the rogues, it's the pack's job to protect each other so the guard and myself will be taking extra shifts on the perimeter."
Stacey smiled, standing after Jake sat down. "I will also be making trips with our ally packs, recruiting more young wolves to help guard the area. I will also be passing my onsite obligations to Marley until I return."
Sam clapped his hands together smiling at everyone. "Now, let's enjoy this feast that Carol and the other staffers made for us." He said before sitting down next to Mercedes.
Mercedes looked around as everyone began to eat and talk among each other, fiddling with the napkin on her lap. She wasn't used to eating with her pack let alone in any group setting, so she wasn't sure what to do.
"Would you like some fruit or a drink?" Sam asked and Mercedes turned to look at him before realizing just how close his face was to hers.
"Umm," She cleared her throat. "I… sure."
He looked at her frowning before grabbing her plate and quickly assembling a few items then placing the now full plate in front of her. "We always eat together, no one gets let out." He explained.
"I hardly get a chance to share a meal with my pack." She said without thinking. "I just- I just mean…"
Girl just be honest, he will understand. I feel it!
Mercedes sighed. "Bree doesn't like me at the table with them."
"And Bree is your pack's Luna, correct?"
Mercedes nodded. "Yes. She and Zeke have strict rules, its for the best of the pack."
Sam masked his emotions. "Are you not the daughter of Magnus and Ariel Jones?"
"Well, yes I am but-."
"Then you are what's best for your pack, the bloodline continues because you're alive. We don't believe that it ends with women, you're the only one that can carry on your mother's lineage." Sam interrupted.
"I never thought about it before… Zeke… he doesn't talk about our parents with me. I barely remember them sometimes." She admitted, poking at a piece of melon.
"How do you expect to raise pups if you don't know anything about your past?"
Mercedes' eyes grew wide and her throat went dry. "Ahh… I would need to be mated first and since that's probably never going to happen…"
"Don't." Sam said firmly. "Don't minimize your worth."
Show her what you mean.
"Habit." She muttered, finally taking a bite of food.
"I hear Stacey gave you a tour, did you like it?"
"From what I see, it's beautiful."
"I could take you on a private tour, show you more of my land. We have a waterfall that is said to heal even the innermost wounds."
Mercedes eyebrows shot up. "That sounds like a very beautiful place."
Sam smiled. "It is. So would you like the tour?"
Mercedes offered him a soft smile. "Yes."
Yes! Was there ever any doubt?
"Excellent. We can go after brunch, if you'd like. Training doesn't start until tomorrow."
Mercedes nodded. "Okay."
Sam stared at her for a moment. "Can I ask you a question?"
Mercedes looked over to him and blinked a few times. "You want to ask me something? Um Ok."
"What is your favorite color?"
The question surprised Mercedes but she offered him a smile. "Take a guess." She said, surprising herself.
Sam glanced down at her dress. "Purple, I say that because most people wear a color that calms them in new environments."
Mercedes grabbed her glass. "It is."
"Well, purple looks great on you, and considering who your mother is, it suits you."
Mercedes wanted to ask him more questions about her mother but she figured she would save that for their walk. She watched as staff came out trying to clean up the tables. "Do you do this for every meal? Sit together, talk, laugh?"
"We do. I feel it's a way for us to bond as a pack. Even those who work in the kitchen come out and enjoy the meal before we need to get to our chores."
"We?" Mercedes asked, looking at him. "You do chores?"
Sam laughed. "Well not in the sense of washing and cleaning, my job is to train the new soldiers, and teach them, as well as lead my pack, we all have things we do to ensure this pack thrives."
"Wow…well it seems like this place is very great. You are doing an amazing job as Alpha."
Sam wanted to say something but Jake stood clearing his throat. "Excuse me Alpha."
Sam looked at him and smiled towards Mercedes. "Give me one second." He stood as Jake walked over to him. "Should I clear your schedule?" He gave Sam a knowing smile.
"Yes Jake. I will be showing Mercedes around, as a good host does."
"Well I will make sure I cover you while you are gone. And I think she would love the waterfall."
Sam shook his head, Sam was sure Stacey put Jake up to it, he noticed Stacey smirk as she and Jake shared a look. "I had already planned on it."
"Good, how about you two head out, I will make sure this place gets cleaned and the pups get settled."
Sam clapped Jake's back. "You are a great Beta. Thanks." Walking over to Mercedes, Sam extended his hand to her. "Shall we?"
Mercedes nodded as she started to feel more comfortable with him. "Yes…should I change?"
Sam shook his head. "No. We are going to be running there. Walking will take too long."
"Run-running? Alpha Sam…I don't… I-"
Sam gently pulled her out the door, and to the outside backyard. "As a wolf, running is a way to feel free, to feel one with our nature. You don't run with your pack?"
Mercedes shook her head. "N-no. Alpha Zeke doesn't allow it."
"What do you mean he doesn't allow it?" Sam asked leading he to the back of a shed.
She shook it off. "Alpha Zeke doesn't know that I have my wolf."
Sam raised an eyebrow, though he had done his research it was always best to hear the truth from her. "How is that possible? We get our wolves at like fifteen?"
Mercedes shook her head. "I didn't get my wolf and when I finally did. I guess I just…" She shrugged. "I am probably weak so it really doesn't matter."
Sam grew angry but didn't show it. "How about, while you are here, you stop talking down about yourself. Mercedes you have greatness in you, I can see it. And if your Alpha can't, that's on him. Now I am going to take you for your first run." He said, pulling off his shirt.
Mercedes eyes grew wide seeing the expanse of his back, and then his chest as he turned. Her eyes traced the missing pieces of his tattoos, the ones she couldn't see because they were always covered. Her mind raced to thoughts of running her hands up his body, touching every tattoo, every muscle.
Mercedes shook her head as she tried to get control of her thoughts. As Sam's hands went to his pants, she quickly turned away from him.
Sam watched her and slowly moved behind her. "Are you okay?
"You are undressing in front of me, it's rude to stare." She said.
"Am I making you uncomfortable? It's not my intention. I even brought you back here so no one would see you." Sam said, wanting to assure her he did not want her to feel anything but safe with him. "If this is too much, you don't have to turn and I can have you ride on my back."
Mercedes turned towards him in surprise. "Ride you?!"
Sam nodded. "As I said, it would take too long to walk, we don't have to go, there are other places in walking distance. This is about your comfort. I would love to run with you but I would also love to just show you my home."
Mercedes swallowed as she looked at him.
Do it. Lets run with our mate, Mercedes.
We've never turned Lilka
You can do this Merce. Just concentrate and let me take over.
"Mercedes?" Sam asked, looking at her.
"I've never…Alpha Sam, I have never turned before." She said feeling shame. What wolf didn't know how to shift.
Sam lifted her face so her eyes met his. "You are in luck, as Alpha, I have helped many turn. Do you trust me?"
Mercedes nodded without hesitation. "Yes. I trust you." And she did, more than she trusted anyone in her own pack.
"Remove your clothing." He led her into the shed, and walked to the shelf where a few shirts were there. "Here this shirt can be ripped so put it on." He said before turning away from her.
Mercedes smiled at the fact he really was a gentleman. She nervously and quickly removed her clothing, as she felt Lilka get excited.
I've never gotten out before.
I know.
As she finish changing, Mercedes took a breath. "Ok, you can turn around."
Sam turned towards her and his breathe hitched. It didn't seem to matter what she wore, she was breath taking. He cleared his throat, looking at her. "Are you ready?"
Nodding, she stepped towards him. "Yes."
"Tell me what your wolf's name is?"
Mercedes exhaled. "Lilka. And yours?"
"Magnum."
Mercedes caught his eyes as her cheeks flushed. This man was doing things with just words and looks. What was happening?
Sam lifted his hand to her cheek. "Close your eyes, since you know her name I can assume you two talk. Focus on that, on her, how she feels, focus on bringing her closer."
Mercedes closed her eyes and did what he said trying to draw closer to Lilka.
Magnum you are on.
Sam said as he closed his own eyes.
Lilka, can you hear me? It's Magnum.
Yes.
I need you to focus on stepping out, feel the fur surrounding you. And the wind running through that fur. Focus on the ground beneath your feet.
Ok…I feel it. I feel Mercedes letting go.
Good, now you let go too.
Sam opened his eyes as suddenly Mercedes was no longer standing in front of him, but now he was looking at Lilka. She was a beautiful brown fur, with specks of white and brown, her eyes went from an intoxicating dark brown to a beautiful reddish tan. She was far bigger than any other female wolf he had seen in or out of his pack. She exuded power and he was certain, she had no idea just what she could do.
In a matter of seconds, Sam's transformation was complete. Magnum, his wolf form, emerged with sleek grey fur that shimmered under the midday sun. His powerful back and face were adorned with a coat of midnight black, giving him a formidable appearance. But it was his piercing eyes and chiseled jaw that truly set him apart from the other wolves, along with his grand and imposing stature. He stood tall and regal, a true alpha in every sense of the word.
Magnum looked at Lilka.
Are you ready?
As ready as we can be.
Follow me. I will go as slow as you need.
Magnum left the shed with Lilka on his tail. He had started out slow, but was surprised to see as he sped up, she had matched his speed. No one typically did that, as he was stronger than most Alpha's around. One of the reasons he and Zeke did not get along.
As they ran side by side, he looked to her, taking in everything she was feeling in the moment, as Wolves they seemed to be connected on a whole new level. The fact they could speak to each other spoke volumes to Sam. He wasn't her Alpha so technically the chances of her hearing him were slim. And yet here they were. As they reached the waterfall, Magnum leaned into her.
Come to the water, this way Mercedes may return with her dignity intact.
Lead the way, we both appreciate it.
As they ran into the water, both Sam and Mercedes popped up simultaneously.
Sam beamed proudly at Mercedes, moving closer to her as they waded in the water. "That was…how do you feel?"
"It was amazing. I have never felt so free…thank you for going easy on me." She said, offering him a smile.
"Easy? Mercedes, Magnum may have started slow but by the end he ran at his normal pace and you and Lilka kept up with us. No one keeps up with us. It was damn impressive."
Mercedes blushed, Zeke always made her feel weak and unwanted and yet Sam went out of his way to make her feel strong, powerful.
Glancing around the waterfall, she took it in, seeing how big and the place actually was. The waterfall in front of her listening as the water rained down into the the water below, in a rapid pace. "This place feels so…safe."
"I'm glad. You deserve to feel safe." Sam said.
It took everything in him not to pull her closer to him, his mind wondering if she felt the same or if it was all in his head. "Would you maybe like to see behind the waterfall?"
Mercedes tilted her head as she looked at him. "Yes. I would love that."
Sam took her hand and another spark ran through them. She looked at him, offering him a nervous smile as he linked their fingers together.
"Come on." Leading her to the waterfall, he pulled her under it, revealing a beautiful cove, with shimmering lights and the muffling sounds of the water.
"Wow…this place is beautiful, Alpha Sam."
"Call me Sam, beautiful." He said, offering a smile. "Besides, none of my pack members call me that when we're home."
"I wish it was that way at home…"
He moved closer, looking her over. "Well, while you're here, you're home."
"Really?" she asked tentatively, the flickering lights of the cove reflecting in her wide eyes. He could see the hope and fear that warred within them, the same emotions he had seen too often in his own reflection.
"Yes," he confirmed firmly, reaching out to tuck a loose strand of her hair behind her ear. His touch was light, but it seemed to calm her, much like the soft lull of the waterfall's song.
"I always thought other Alphas were like Zeke… I've only been here for a few hours and have been shown a whole new world."
"Not all alphas are like Zeke," Sam said, his voice gentle. He watched as a delicate blush bloomed on her cheeks, her face glowing under the soft hues of the cove's ethereal lights. "Zeke's ways are not the ways of our kind. We're not meant to rule with fear, but with respect and love."
Her eyes met his and for a moment, time stood still. The waterfall's roar was merely a distant echo, unable to compete with the silent conversation taking place in the hidden cove. "Sam…" She said his name with such reverence that he felt his heart shudder.
"Go on," He urged her, his voice barely above a whisper as he encouraged her to speak her mind.
"I… I never knew I could feel safe like this," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "I never realized how twisted Zeke's perception of alphas was..." Her eyes brimmed with unshed tears, reflecting the light of the cove in their depths. Sam reached out, his thumb gently brushing away a tear that had spilled over.
"It's okay," he murmured, drawing her closer until their bodies were mere inches apart. "You're safe here. With me." His eyes held hers captive, the promise in them as tangible as the cool rock walls surrounding them.
Mercedes looked at him, feeling her heart begin to race. "I... I trust you, Sam," she whispered. It was the truth, and it surprised her how easy it was to put into words. His gaze softened, replaced with a tenderness that made her breath hitch.
"That means a lot, Mercedes," Sam's voice was barely a murmur, as if speaking any louder would shatter the oasis of tranquility they were in. His fingers traced her jawline, reveling in her warmth, the gesture soothing some unknown fear that had been simmering beneath her surface.
She closed her eyes, leaning into his touch. A sigh of contentment escaped her lips. "I've never felt this...free," she admitted softly, her voice barely audible over the cascade of the waterfall.
"And you'll continue to be free," he assured her solemnly, his gaze never leaving her face. He lightly cupped her chin, tilting it upward so their eyes could meet. "As long as I'm here."
His hand moved from her face down to her waist, pulling her closer. His eyes never left hers as he lowered his head towards her. She could feel his breath on her lips, causing them to part in anticipation. The tension between them was palpable; it hummed in the air like an electric current.
Just when their lips were about to meet, the sweet moment was interrupted by a sudden, loud 's eyes sharpened, his protective instincts kicking in as he shifted his position to shield Mercedes from any potential danger.
"Is…" Mercedes started but stopped when Sam looked at her.
"Rogues."
Y'all we literally thought we posted all of these.. we're very sorry!
