Anne and Sasha had to admit this wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it just wasn't for them.
In all the years they had known Marcy they knew she had loved RPGs, always talking excitedly about the new worlds she created, the new expansions and worlds she could go to.
The two girls had thought it was cute and at first, basically gave her the same attention one would give an adorable puppy who was gnawing on a slipper.
Then as time went on, they grew more and more tired of it, never rude, but dismissive.
It was all the math and dice and rules that confused Anne, and the fact that Sasha thought she was too cool for this.
The past two hours had involved them creating characters. It should have been easy, but then they needed to choose which god they were aligned with and which birth sign they had, then they had to choose their race. Which wasn't as easy as something like a human or an orc, for some reason there were seven different types of elves.
It was not as simple as the fantasy movies the girls had watched with Marcy.
Currently, the three were sitting in Marcy's hotel room. Her parents were in their bedroom, while the three girls occupied the living area. The trio were sitting at a table, with Marcy sitting at the head behind a cardboard screen.
"And so," narrated Marcy, in her role as dungeon master, "The two heroes found themselves trapped in the forest of forgetfulness, wondering which creatures lay in the shadows."
"Suddenly something dashed out of the shadows, if only there was a spell that could help them."
"Oh that's me," said Anne looking at her spell sheet, she had chosen to be a cleric. She looked down at it trying to spot a spell, "Umm, reveal?"
"The brave cleric casts the reveal spell. Nothing is revealed, the creature is still hiding in the darkness."
"Dang," muttered Anne.
"I charge at it with my mighty barbarian strength," said Sasha, hoping it would work.
"Make an attack roll."
Sasha picked up the dice and rolled them, double ones.
"Is that good?"
"You charge at the thing in the shadows and slam into a tree."
"Ouch," said Anne.
"Shut up," laughed Sasha.
"A figure steps out of the darkness, it is a fat man dressed in fine clothing, he smiles at you."
"Greetings young adventurers, I am a humble merchant and-"
"I charge and attack him," said Sasha.
"What?" Said her two best friends.
"Well he's clearly evil, what merchant goes to a forest at night and with no bodyguards? He's either a killer or a monster in disguise."
The two other girls sat there for a few seconds, before Anna nodded, "Good point, Sasha."
Marcy stood there, her mouth wide open, only able to mutter out "Do a strength check."
Sasha did so, this time she got two sixes.
"You chop his head off, and from the body, a dark mist leaks towards the sky. Your actions have prevented a powerful demon from taking over the world and ending the campaign early."
"Oh…" said Sasha, awkwardly, "I guess killing everything we meet is the best solution."
Marcy sat there for a few seconds and then started to laugh, "You actually defeated the big bad of the campaign in two hours."
"Sorry," said Anne, "Next time Sasha won't murder people because she doesn't trust them."
"Okay, but last time I tried to convince you someone was evil didn't exactly work out for any of us."
Anne mouth fell open, The room went silent.
Sasha smile vanished, "I mean-"
"No, You were right, I should have-"
"No, after all I did-"
"Guys, don't do this."
The two turned to Marcy, "Do what?" asked Anne.
"Blame yourselves what happened, We all kind of messed up that day," she lowered her head in shame, "Especially me."
The silence returned.
"Marcy, if we're not going to blame ourselves, then you've got to do the same," said Sasha, "We already forgave you, I think we need to start forgiving ourselves."
"I mean, I didn't do anything wrong," said Anne.
"Yeah, The looks Mrs Wu gave when she saw you next to me and Sasha… I'd say they'd disagree."
Anne blushed and laughed sheepishly, "Yeah, sorry about not telling them other than a postcard. I didn't want them to worry."
"So you sent them an anonymous letter at during the holidays, telling them we were in another world, and you expected them to be fine?"
"I didn't know, I wanted to promise I'd get you back, but the government was watching and-"
"Was this around the same time you were on a float for the restaurant? In a big parade? That aired on national TV?"
Anne sat there, looking around for an escape, before sighed "Listen I wasn't chosen to be wit, mine was heart, cut me some slack."
The three started laughing, somehow having broken past whatever awkward barrier remained between them.
"So what do we do now, try another game?" asked Anne.
Marcy sat there, "Well, actually, I was thinking about going to the beach. You know, I think we only have a few weeks before I have to go."
"Really?" said Anne, "I mean we could start a new game and-"
"Nah, I want to do something we'd all enjoy… and something Sasha wouldn't murder in twenty seconds."
The girls laughed.
"Hey, Before we go, can I borrow the book you were reading from when we made our characters?" asked Sasha.
"What the player's handbook? Sure." said Marcy, handing it over, "What for?"
"Nothing, I just want to see how this game works."
"IS it because you might want to play again in the future?" asked Marcy, somewhat excited.
"Maybe," replied the blonde.
They gathered all their stuff together and walked to the door, ready to spend a day at the beach together.
…
Anne looked at herself in the mirror. When she had gotten back to the farm, Hop-Pop presented her with a wrapped gift. Inside was a blue dress, that came down to her knees. It wasn't tight, and looked similar to that one she wore at that dance festival ten years ago. Lying on top of it was a piece of paper that read: 'The Mayor's house, 6:30PM'
She had to admit that it looked good on her.
Looking at her phone, she saw it was four thirty, around an hour and a half before she would meet up with Sasha and Marcy at six. This gave her thirty minutes to think of something to distract them with, hopefully things would work out.
A knock at the door brought Anne out of her thoughts. "Anne, are you ready?" came a voice from downstairs.
Walking to the door, Anne opened it, "Coming down now."
As she walked down the stairs, she saw the Plantars were dressed in their best, Hop-Pop wore his best suit, the same he had been wearing for ten years.
Sprig was wearing a pink suit, he had removed his trademark hat, and his hair was styled in flat fashion.
Polly was wearing the dress that she and Anne had bought a few days ago, it was green, and looked nice on the young tomboy. Currently, the young frog was looking in a mirror being held up by the recently polished Frobo.
The only one left was Max, who was wearing the clothes his friends had bought for him a few days ago.
"You look wonderful, Anne," said Hop-Pop.
"Credit to the designer, it's wonderful." replied Anne, "Speaking of which, how did you get my measurements?"
"Oh, Frobo measured you in your sleep." said Polly
Anne stood there for a second, confused. "What?"
"Oh, don't worry about it," said Hop-Pop casually, "he's done it with everyone in town."
"That doesn't make me feel better."
"Yeah, yeah, Anne looks good," said Polly looking in the mirror, suddenly she gasped, "IS THAT A PIMPLE?".
"On, it," said Sprig walking over to Polly, he pulled a small tub of cream and applied it to her face, the pimple vanished.
"There, Pearl won't notice it."
"Shut up…and thank you Sprig," said Polly standing up.
"Relax, Polly, you'll be fine," said Sprig,
"Pfft, Just because you and Ivy have the perfect relationship doesn't mean the rest of us have it easy," replied Polly.
"How is Ivy anyway?" asked Anne.
"Eh, fine. We saw each other on the day Max got the town destroyed, she was fine, but we didn't have much time to talk, I'm going to see her later today."
"Can we get going already?" asked Max impatiently.
"Relax, Max, they won't start without you," said Sprig.
"Yeah, but I don't want to be late," said Max.
"Do you have all your things?" asked Anne.
"Yes," moaned Max.
"Sleeping bag."
"Yes."
"Toothbrush?"
Max stood there confused, "I don't have a-"
Anne walked over to the table and threw a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste at him, Max caught it and looked at it, "There's toothpaste in Amphibia?"
"Yep, wish I knew about it sooner."
"We figured you just didn't practice decent hygiene," said Hop-Pop.
"That and we thought you were gross," added Polly.
…
An hour later, Max and Anne arrived riding Bessie to the Yunan's house, the rest had gone on Micro-Angelo, and Polly on Frobo. Anne would be meeting up with them later.
"Woah, this place makes the Plantars' look like a… well, a farm." said Max.
"Eh, that's nothing, did I ever tell you how nice the Mayor's house is? Two words: Hot Tub."
Max whistled. "Nice."
As they reached the door, Anne knocked on it.
It opened.
Standing there was General Yunan.
"Good evening, Anne," said the newt, smiling. She then turned to Max and scowled, "Max."
"Hey," said Max, putting on a brave face, "Thanks for letting me stay."
Yunan grunted and moved out of the way, the boy turned to Anne, "Have fun with your shenanigans, don't do anything I wouldn't do."
"I will," replied Anne as the boy rushed inside the house, Anne smiled, then turned to Yunan, "If you need anything just come to the party in the town square."
The general nodded, as Anne walked away.
Anne boarded the snail and looked at the house. She couldn't help but smile, Max was probably in for a night of fun. It reminded her of her time with Sasha and Marcy.
"Come on, Bessie, let's go."
…
Max would have to admit that he was exited at going to his first sleepover. He knew he shouldn't go in with high expectations, but he couldn't help it.
Images of the three of them drinking soda, telling scary stories and listening to music sounded fun.
As he opened the door, he saw his three friends sat watching Marcy's tablet. On the screen there was an anime playing, a magical girl in blonde hair was fighting some sort of demon.
"Ohh, look," said the excited Marcy, the young frog was wearing a light pink pajama shirt and pants with frills at the ends, "She's going to finish off the villain with her final attack."
"Is it going to be a different one?" asked Lucian, he was dressed in a large furry onesie, it was bright purple.
"She's used the same attack for the last three episodes," replied Nicole, who was not wearing anything as usual, "Do you expect her to do anything different?"
"What are you guys watching?"
The three turned to see Max standing there.
"Max," all three yelled at once as they rushed towards him.
"About time you showed up," said Lucian, "Marcy was torturing us with this anime thing."
"It's Earth art," said Marcy, sticking her nose in the sky, "I wouldn't expect someone without taste to understand."
"Whatever," said Nicole, "Max is back, we can do something fun."
"I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with Max's version of fun," said Marcy.
"Nah, Max probably has something cool planned, don't you Max?"
Max stood there for a few seconds, they weren't wrong, he had seen the armor, the grand staircase, there were so many things they could get up to here.
But he has promised to turn a new leaf, it would probably keep them out of trouble.
"No, not today," he said casually.
Lucian's face fell, "What?"
"Oh nothing, it's just I… think you should lead the evening tonight, Lucian."
The toad boy stood there and slowly started to smile.
"My time has come," he rushed to his sleeping bag and pulled out a book.
"What's with the book?" asked Max.
"This is the Scare dare record, it has been passed down to me from Sasha," explained the boy.
"Scare dare?," asked Marcy, "What's that?"
"A test of bravery, only done by the brave," said Lucian, "We must complete a terrifying task without failing."
"Ooooohhhhhhh," said Nicole excitedly, "What do we do then?"
"Later, young Nicole, we must build up to this event before the scares start."
"Like what," asked Marcy.
"Truth or Dare."
…
The town square was full of partying toads
Sasha had to admit, toad always threw the best parties.
She had known this ever since she arrived at the tower, where she had seen that the majority of the toads were already in the middle of some sort of wild celebration, each of them doing something stupid. She remembered seeing a group of toads drinking a brownish liquid and constantly falling over, the surrounding toads chanting his name.
Her first time partying with them was interesting to say the least, she remembered toads singing, toads fighting, two toads were making out in the corner, cards were being played, toad beverages were being served. It had been the first time Sasha ever drank alcohol, and it was disgusting. This party was not as wild as those, sure bog grogs were being served, but the toads seemed calmer.
She recognized many of them there, but they all seemed tired, many looked rude, but she was surprised just how civil they were. A frog waiter had bumped into Mire and instead of beating the frog, they just moaned loudly.
They were far different from the toads that she had known back then.
She had been at the party for thirty minutes now, many toads had come up to her to talk, she hadn't danced just yet, but had promised Percy one.
"Having fun?" Said a gruff voice next to her, turning she saw Grime standing there smiling.
"Absolutely." said Sasha, "So when do you bring out the volcakeno?"
"Two hours, so you can sneak away to be with your friends."
The blonde warrior blushes, "Oh you know about that then?"
"Yes, I noticed Lucian was acting odd, so I ordered him to tell me, You've got one hell of a night in front of you."
Sasha groaned, "Okay, then you can cover for me here, I'll only be gone thirty minutes tops, then come back."
"Really, so you can call your evening with the girls off?"
Sasha shook her head, "Absolutely not, I can't just ditch them after ten years of seeing them, and I can't do the same to you guys, I just gotta keep doing this again and again, Now if you don't mind me I've got to meet them in front of a fancy café."
Before Grime could respond she dashed off, the toad sighed, "So this is what it feels like to be the straight man."
….
Marcy sat in at the front of the table, around her were her fellow former rangers, laughing.
They were currently sitting in Felicia's tea Shopee, in another room unconnected to the main one. This meant that she would be able to sneak into the main room and greet her two best friends when they arrived.
All three of them had done well for themselves, Javi now had his own line of hair products, Kettle was now an instructor for potential rangers and Femur was still working as a Sheppard.
She was glad to see that they were alright.
The truth was that, in a way, she felt bad for how she had treated them, she always considered them part of her childish RPG fantasy.
Not once had she ever considered herself their friend.
"So, what have you been doing since you've been away?" Kettle asked.
Marcy was brought out of her guilt by Kettles' question, "Oh, I'm fine, I'm now an artist."
"What really?" asked Javi who smiled, "You got time to do us? I mean, I know the pen can only hold so much beauty but-"
"Jav, we talked about this." said Kettle, knocking her husband in the ribs, "Try to keep your ego in check."
The green newt sighed, "Fine, I'll accept the limitation of art," He then picked up his napkin and passed it to the human
Marcy laughed, took the napkin and reached inside her cloak's small inline pouch.
Beneath the coat, Marcy was wearing a green dress which Lady Olivia had made her a few days ago. It wasn't anything truly fancy, just something she could go out on the town with.
The three newts at the table hadn't seen it, they had all just seen her cloak. They did question why she was wearing a cloak, and the fact that they could see nothing beneath the cloak slightly concerned them, but they were willing to accept their former commander's strange habits.
Marcy was just about to finish drawing her three former rangers when her phone's alarm went off, she gasped and accidentally ruined Drawing Javi's perfect hair.
"Shoot," groaned Marcy, clutching her stomach. "Um, I've got to go to the bathroom, it might be a while."
"Are you okay?" asked Kettle
"Yeah, I might have a small bug, I might be a while."
"What bug, Pill bug?" asked Kettle
"If you want to go home, we can-" Javi started to say.
"No," said Marcy, "it's cool, you guys just keep talking."
Marcy stood up and dashed out the room.
….
Tsnre was happy with his life.
He had come to Wartwood after the war trying to start a new life for himself, the people had been strangely accepting of him, not that he complained, no one really asked any questions and just accepted the odd newt.
Right now though, he was standing behind the counter, his boss Felicia had left him in charge of the shop tonight, she had to go attend a party for one of the Plantars. Before she left, she told him there was only a small party in tonight, just a small group of friends.
It was annoying to come back from his vacation only to start working again, but he accepted it. He always left town for a few days when it came to celebrating the heroes, he was surprised to see the town was in disarray while he was gone.
His sense of guilt always got to him that day.
But that didn't matter now, he was just going to work his shift then go home for the night.
"Excuse me?" said a voice in front of the counter, Tsnre looked up with a smile…which quickly faded the moment he saw the human in a blue dress.
It took all his strength to not scream in fright.
"Yes, miss?" he said politely.
"I'm looking for my friend, Is she-"
"Anne," said another human rushing through the door, she was wearing a red dress.
"Sasha!" said the other human, smiling, "You ready for this?"
"You know it," laughed the blonde human.
Tsnre sat there, watching the two humans talk, he was just getting more and more worried. He tried to calm himself, there was no way they would recognize him, they had never seen him before, not like-
"GIRLS," shouted a voice from the main café area.
Hope died in Tsnre that very moment. He turned to see her come rushing out of the side room of the café, the girl (Now a woman) who had brought his old life to an end.
The three ran towards each other and grabbed each other by the arms, they let out a high-pitched scream, clearly some sort of battle cry.
"So what do we do first, I hear there's a dance club in Wartwood now, maybe we can go there first?"
"Sure," said Sasha, "But first, drinks."
"Excuse me," said Marcy in a playful tone, clearly out to mess with him, "We'd like drinks please, bring us the best drinks in the house."
Tsnre looked at her terrified, "Ye…Yes, miss," he said, stuttering.
He rushed into the kitchen, starting to pant. She knew, she had to, after ten years of him living in Wartwood doing nothing wrong, she was back to confront him.
Maybe if he brought her drinks she'd go away, he just needed to make something, anything. Looking around the kitchen, he spotted it, sitting on the stove.
Gord tea, he just needed to serve this to Marcy and her two friends and they'd go.
Dashing over to the gourd, he poured it into three different cups and placed them on a tray, in his haste he didn't bother to fold the decorative napkins on the tray, which would annoy Felicia later on, but despite the justified fear of her anger, he'd risk it.
He stepped out of the kitchen and walked to the table where the girls were laughing, he didn't pay attention to what, he just placed the tea on the table.
"Our best, madams," he said politely.
The girls murmured their thanks, and drank the tea.
Whatever hope Tsnre had vanished the moment the girls spat it out.
"That's vile," said Sasha.
"Yeah, that might not have been the best," added Marcy.
Anne looked at the remains of the liquid in her cup, "It tastes…familiar."
Tsnre started to panic, they didn't like it, they would now think he tried to poison them, he was doomed and-
"Um, I have to be a pain, but I have to go to Grimes," said Sasha, suddenly, "I promised him I'd…help him move a few things."
"Really, Sash," said Anne skeptically, "Can't he do that himself?"
"Anne, he's only got one arm now, and since he lost it saving me I-"
"Don't worry," said Marcy, "Hey how about you go there, and we'll meet back up with you at the club."
"Great, I'll see you there," with that, Sasha left.
"Actually, I have to go for a few seconds as well."
"What?" asked Marcy, "Where?"
"Oh, I promised Max I'd buy him a toy as an apology for all that happened a few days ago, I know it's late, but the shop closes in a few minutes and well, I really promised him I'd-"
"No it's fine," said Marcy, waving her hand in dismissal, "You can go."
Anne nodded and walked away.
Tsnre looked in fright, he was now alone with Marcy, this was when she was going to strike.
Instead, she just stood up and walked towards one of the separate rooms in the café.
He stood there for a second before he let out a sigh of relief, he was being stupid, he just needed to calm down.
That's when he heard the scream.
…
Marcy watched as Anne walked away, Both of them had walked away from her. A part of her wondered if she had done something wrong when they were talking, or was the tea that bad?
She shook her head, she was overreacting, they wouldn't leave just because of bad tea, they probably just had to go and do what they said they had to do.
Despite being ten years older, scared teenage Marcy sometimes reappeared, at times when she was worried that she had done something wrong or when she was doing something difficult.
But that Marcy was gone, her friendship with the girls was as strong as ever, she stood up to go see her other friends. She put on and smile and opened the door.
Someone was sitting in her seat in front of the others.
Their long hair dangled behind the chair. However, the thing that wiped Marcy's smile away was the helmet, attached to it were those horrible horns.
The figure turned and Marcy saw their face, it was hers just covered black metal, Ten eyes looked at her.
The figure smiled.
"Marcy," They said in her voice mixed with something unholy, "It's so good to see you again."
With that, she screamed.
…
As Sasha ran through the town, she tried to keep her thoughts straight. She'd go there, then meet up with her girls at the club, it would only be for a few minutes, she arrived in the town square
…Only to notice it had changed, no longer was it full of partying toads, it was now a large gymnasium. There were toad football players, toad cheerleaders, toad jocks, toad nerds, basically all the high school stereotypes.
"Sasha?" Asked Grime, walking up to her and looking at her worried, "Is everything alright?"
Sasha swallowed. What was in that tea?
…
Anne arrived at the town hall and brushed her dress down. Taking a deep breath, she opened the doors.
"She's here," said Hop-Pop whose face was now a kettle, "THREE CHEERS FOR ANNE"
As the crowd cheered, Anne took in the room with growing eyes. Polly's head was now a large ball, her parents' hair was glowing rainbow colors, and Sprig was the upper half of a demonic scarecrow.
It didn't just stop with her family though, everyone in the room had transformed. Toadie was now seven foot tall, Wally was wearing his rich person clothes, Croaker was hot again.
All around her, the entire hall was full of bizzaro versions of the people and frogs she knew.
"Oh," said Anne, "That's why that tea tasted familiar."
