Over the last week, Gloria felt her life had been an emotional roller coaster. For the ups? She had her son proposing to his girlfriend. Sure it had come about under false pretenses, but there was nothing false about David's proposal. Or Lucy's acceptance. Gloria wouldn't admit it out loud, but she was over the moon that she'd finally have a daughter (in law) to pal around with.
Then there was the revelation that one of her chooms was expecting his first child. She really wished she had taken a still of Maine's face, or got a recording of the delighted scream Dorio let out once the pregnancy was confirmed. Gloria was certain her own face matched Maine's in surprise as the man promptly named her Godmother of his unborn child.
Then there was the wild part of the ride that was her reconciliation with V.
She had listened with the others as V told them his story. How he was always under The Bastard's control – literally and figuratively. And how he had broken free from him and was truly free for the first time. As a result, and with the help of some mutual friends, they had been able to talk about their feelings on the matter of his past. Had worked out their differences...And accidentally probably scarred their son for life.
She still couldn't quite decide if the end result of V moving back in with her was worth David's trauma.
Setting that aside, Gloria could also admit the last week of 'domestic bliss' with V had been wonderful. The two would wake up in each others arms and have breakfast together before he went off to work. She would do some of the housework, before going out to run errands or help Nadia with her clinic. Whomever was home first would cook dinner for the two of them, and they would talk of their day over dinner. The rest of the evening would be spent relaxing on the couch and watching some show or movie before going to bed. Some nights they would just cuddle until they fell asleep, whispering adorations to each other. While other nights would be spent locked in each others arms, physically showing the other how much they were loved until they fell asleep in a tangle of limbs.
Tonight was one of the latter, and Gloria let out a tiny hum as she snuggled into V's chest.
"Happy?" V asked, giving her a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"Very." She returned the gesture with a small peck to his chin. "Are you?"
"How could I not be? I've got a preem house. A good meal in my stomach." She felt his arms wrap around her and pull her closer. "Oh, and I'm holding the mother of my child and Night City's most beautiful woman."
"Got one part of that rig-ow." Gloria flinched as V flicked her forehead.
"No, none of that." He squeezed her, peppering her with kisses as he did. "You're beautiful. Smart. Intelligent. You raised a...decent kid." She playfully smacked him, knowing he meant no disrespect. "Oh, and you put up with my gonk ass and antics. So, yeah...Actually, I'm wrong. You're not Night City's most beautiful woman."
"Oh really? Then what am I?" She braced herself for the cheesy line she could feel brewing in V's chest.
"You're Night City's BEST woman."
"Cheeze ball." Gloria laughed, as V continued to pepper her with kisses and caresses.
"It's true." He stopped his affections, giving her a gentle nuzzle. "I just hope I show you how much I really do appreciate you. Taking me back...multiple times."
"V." A slight pang of guilt moved through her. "If anyone needs to show how much they appreciate the other, it's me. I wouldn't be here without you. Wouldn't have any of this."
"Hmm, nope. Not even close." She felt V shake his head more than she saw it. "You pulled me from a dark place when I was younger. Gave me something to look forward to. And when you left? I clung to the memory of your touch. Your laughter. Told myself I needed to keep going, just in case you came back. Just in case...You needed me."
"Vinny..." Gloria's guilt was replaced with a soft adoration. She was never prepared for when V would open up to her, but she loved it all the same.
"Yeah, so shush up and accept my praise." He lightly headbutted her. "Oh, and you also better accept the surprise I have for you tomorrow."
"A surprise?" She asked as V yawned and nodded. God, she didn't deserve this man.
"Yeah, so we should, probably get some sleep." He yawned again, shifting under the covers as he got comfortable. Gloria followed his example and rolled over, smiling as she felt V spoon against her.
"Alright V." Gloria agreed, pressing into him slightly as she felt his arm wrap around her. "Goodnight love."
A muttered reply and a soft snore met her ears, and she knew sleep had finally caught up with V. Smiling, Gloria closed her eyes, letting her mind relax as she joined V in sleep.
❀( ˘ ³˘)~ (⁎❛ᴗ❛⁎)❀
If you asked Gloria how she slept last night, she would have difficulty finding the right words to describe just how comfortable a night's sleep she had. To all of her sensors, the sheets were warm and soft and seemed reluctant to let her go from their grasp. Her consciousness was lost somewhere in the line between the fuzz of sleep and the haze of wakefulness, and couldn't seem to decide which way it wanted to go.
The decision was given a little help as she picked up on the gentle tones of soft jazz coming from somewhere nearby. It was loud enough to catch her attention, but soft enough to not be distracting. Eyes still closed, she shifted under the covers and let out a tiny hum, curious if she'd get a reply.
A faint huff of a laugh, accompanied by the soft clatter of metal against ceramic responded. This was followed by a feather-light kiss being placed on her temple.
"Wake up beautiful." She heard V whisper as he bestowed another kiss on her forehead.
"Hmm, V?" Gloria willed her eyes to open, pushing herself up slightly. The red-head felt V's arms encircle her, his touch soft as he shifted her to a proper sitting position. He was smiling with an amused softness. An expression that was usually hidden from the world.
"Eighteen years and you're still so slow to rise." He muttered, laughing as he did. Before she could grumble out a reply, V was once again peppering little kisses on her forehead.
"M'not slow. I'm comfy." She yawned, one hand moving to rub at her optics. It was an unnecessary gesture, but one that helped her continue to feel 'human'.
"And cute." V booped her nose, making it twitch. As it did, she became aware of the oddly sweet smell permeating the bedroom.
"Do I smell maple?" She sniffed, making V smile and chuckle lightly.
"Probably. Remember how I said I had a surprise for you?" She nodded, now noticing the elevated tray resting on the dresser. A tray that V was now picking up and setting before her. A cup of coffee, whose color indicated it had been seasoned just the way she liked – rested on one side of the tray in her favorite mug with some silverware. A silver dome in the center hid whatever offering was underneath it from sight, but did little to mask the sweet aroma drifting out from under it. "Behold. French toast à la mode."
With a flourish, V lifted the dome to reveal what it had been hiding.
Four extra thick cut slices of bread had been dipped in egg and browned to perfection. She could tell by the faint sheen that each slice had been buttered, before being given a dusting of both powdered and cinnamon sugar. Each piece had been further topped with a small scoop of ice cream, before being drizzled with maple syrup. On a smaller plate, there was some scrambled organic eggs, bacon, and a small fruit cup.
"Oh my God V, this looks amazing." Gloria thought her artificial heart was going to burst she was so touched by the gesture. Sure, V had brought her breakfast in the hospital a few times, and made her simple breakfast meals a few times since she moved in...But never had he made something so elaborate.
Nor had he budged on the rule of 'no eating in bed'.
Okay, so there wasn't much that could be done about that while she was in the hospital. But outside of young David being cute on Mother's Day and bringing her a (burnt) toaster pastry once, Gloria couldn't recall any other time she had been treated to breakfast in bed.
"Well, go on...Try a bite." V looked genuinely concerned about her opinion, which made her chuckle as she cut into one of the slices of toast. Giving him a smile, she popped it into her mouth and felt her sensors go into overdrive as the flavors and textures registered with her.
The bread melted as she chewed it, while the syrup added a sweetness that contrasted the savory of the bread. The slight hint of spice from the cinnamon was soothed by the creaminess of the ice cream.
Maybe it was a good thing she was now synthetic, otherwise Gloria was certain she'd have died from how delicious the food was.
"I take it it is good?" She heard V laughed and looked at her plate, she had already eaten half of the slice without realizing it. Her eyes went to V, who had taken a seat at the foot of the bed with his own, smaller plate holding everything he had made for her.
"Very." She swallowed her current bite, taking a sip of her coffee. It was perfect and she hummed in appreciation. "Thank you for such a wonderful surprise."
"Well, if you think this is good...I can't wait to see your reaction to your other surprises." That made her pause, a bite of egg halfway to her mouth. "What? You didn't think this was the only surprise I had for you today, did you?"
"Yeah?" Gloria blinked, confused. On the one hand, she was delighted that V was being so caring and attentive to her. That after all their years apart, that he still loved her enough to do little things like this. On the other hand, for all this to come so soon after their son got engaged!? And after everything he told her? The red-head couldn't help but feel V might have had an ulterior motive.
"Nope, I've got quite a few more for you." V smiled, taking a bite of his own food. "So eat up, you're going to need your energy."
If Gloria didn't already have reservations about...Whatever V had planned, those words would have made her stop. Made her consider telling him he didn't need to spoil her so much. Again. But upon seeing how excited her input looked at the thought of surprising her all day? All of her protests were stalled on her lips. Swallowing her worries, she nodded.
"Alright, so what are we doing after breakfast?"
By the way V's whole face shifted in delight, Gloria couldn't decide if she should share his excitement...Or be nervous as to what the day might hold for her.
❀( ˘ ³˘)~ (⁎❛ᴗ❛⁎)❀
After breakfast was finished, with V doing all the clean up while she watched. He instructed her to fix her hair and dress casually.
"Need a little more detail than that V." She laughed, looking through her clothes. "Not that I'm doubting you, but I don't want to dress for the beach if we're just going to the movies for example."
"Hmm..." V hummed, one hand rubbing his chin. She could tell he was trying to give her an answer without giving anything away. "Maybe one of those cute little sundresses you'd wear when you want to look nice but stay cool? Or that crop top and jeans number you always wore to parties in the Badlands? Either way, just make sure whatever you pick is loose fitting and easy to take off."
"Easy to take off? Maybe I should just go around naked all day." She teased, shedding her nightgown in favor of giving V a full view of her chest.
"Gloria, much as I would love that..." She noticed V made no effort to hide the slight bulge in his pants. "I think you'll want to be dressed for your next surprise."
"Oh? And just what is my next surprise?" Gloria pressed, picking her favorite black and red plaid crop top and denim jacket off a hangar. A pair of distressed jeans and her plaid lace-ups would complete the look and let her be comfortable almost anywhere they could possibly go.
"A shopping spree at Jinguji."
V said it so casually that Gloria couldn't decide if she was more surprised at him giving her an answer. Or at the answer itself.
The thought of shopping at such a high end place thrilled her. Sure, she had gone out and bought new clothes from some other places, but none of them came close to what Jinguji had to offer.
Something she told V as she put on her outfit of choice for the day.
As a result, she was confused with just a touch of disappointed as V revealed they weren't actually going to the store.
"But I thought you said we were going shopping?"
"We are, but rather than take you to the store." V smiled mischievously as he dressed in one of his old 'rocker boy' get ups. "I'm bringing the store to you."
"What do you mean?" She asked, turning her attention to her hair.
"You'll see." V teased, making her sigh and roll her eyes as he left their bedroom.
"That doesn't answer my question..." She called after him, sighing as he called back an 'I can't hear you'. Never mind that his audio implants were probably as good if not better than her own.
Fortunately for Gloria, her wait for answers wasn't long and about fifteen minutes after she had finished her hair; opting to pull most of it back into a simple ponytail with some stray strands framing the right side of her face. She had stepped out of their bedroom to find V standing in the living room and talking with three other people. One was an older gentleman, the other a woman maybe just a few years older than her. The third surprised her the most, as she recognized him as the famous designer Zane Jagger.
"V? What's all this?" Her eyes looked away from the newcomers to the coffee table. On it, she could see several design tablets, cases, a shoe box, and a single black garment bag. "Probably one of V's suits he had altered."
"Ah, you must be Gloria." Zane smiled, giving a tiny bow as he held out a hand in greeting. "Zane Jagger, a pleasure to meet you."
"Gloria Martinez." She matched his formal introduction as she took his hand, smiling as he mimed planting a kiss on it.
"And to answer your earlier question. V has requested for me and my associates, Clayborn and Shirley." He gestured to the other two who quickly offered greetings of their own before he continued. "To outfit you with some new, custom fitted clothing. All within the comfort and privacy of your own home."
"I...I see." She looked at V, who was smiling nervously. Did he not think this through? That, whatever this was meant people just coming into her, their home? Or was he worried about her reaction to his latest surprise? Before she could make a comment, she saw Zane snap his fingers. At the signal, his companions picked up their tablets and measuring tapes, awaiting further instructions.
And V's expression still didn't change. Somehow, that bothered her more than anything else and she swallowed her own confusion and minor discomfort.
"So...How does this work?" She looked to the table. "Did you bring along samples of clothes for me to try or?"
"Not quite, my dear." Zane started, gesturing to his assistants. "What we're going to do is get your measurements, and go over a whole host of design options that work with your body type and shape. We'll discuss fabrics, styles, and when its all done? Take that information and make you a whole custom wardrobe."
Gloria blinked, thinking of all her other clothes. Didn't V already give her a custom wardrobe when she moved in?
"I did." V chuckled, making Gloria cringe as she realized she had voiced her thoughts. "But all that was done based on second-hand knowledge from Nadia. I'd like to give you first-hand input this time. Plus, it's fun to watch the process."
"Alright." She sighed, looking to the designers. "So what do I need to do?"
"Just move as we instruct, okay?" Zane started, explaining the process as he and the other two went to work. Clayborn took her measurements, explaining how to stand so that he could get the best read. While he worked, Shirley opened one of the cases to reveal a whole host of fabric samples.
"You seem to favor denim, and synthetic fibers like nylon or polyester." The woman hummed, feeling Gloria's top between her fingers. Looking in the case, she pulled out several swatches. "For your newest outfits, I'm going to suggest linen, cotton, or bamboo. Much softer and more breathable."
Gloria couldn't tell if the woman knew she was fully synthetic or not, but nodded in agreement as she accepted the fabrics. Right away, she could feel the difference between her current outfit and the fabric she was holding.
"I see what you mean." Gloria brought the bamboo swatch to her cheek, enjoying the softness. "I'll go with whatever you feel will work best for...whatever you might be thinking for me."
"Gloria." V had been watching from nearby, smiling at her reaction. "Zane and his team are masters of their craft. If you want something in a certain fabric, they can and will make it happen."
"I know but..." The red-head looked back at the various fabrics. She was used to seeing items on a rack and picking that way, not having the power to fully customize something.
"It's a little overwhelming, yes?" Zane cut in, and she nodded. "But that is why I am here. Now that we have your measurements, I can show you a whole range of designs and ideas."
Dismissing his associates for a moment, Zane gestured for Gloria to join him on the couch. He picked up one of the tablets on the table and showed Gloria a 3D sketch model he had made of her from her measurements. V came over to look, opting to stand behind her and peer over the couch. One of his hands coming to rest on her shoulder as Zane started showing her various ideas.
By the time they were done, Gloria had picked out at least nine new outfits ranging from casual to formal. All of them in fabrics and colors she'd be comfortable wearing...And all of them made just for her.
"Perfect." V kissed her as Zane and his team made their final notes. "Now, I have one more gift for you." V picked up the garment bag that Zane had brought along and handed it to her.
"Thought this was one of your suits?" She held the bag carefully, trying to figure out what might be inside.
"Nope, just a little something I saw that I thought you'd look amazing in." He smiled, gesturing for her to open it.
Gloria nodded, carefully sliding the zipper along its track to open the bag. As the bag fell away, her mouth dropped open as the garment inside was revealed.
It was a backless off-strap turtleneck sweater dress, also known as a 'Virgin Killer'. The fabric was a deep mahogany red that was bordering on black.
"V...This is..." Her hands slid along the fabric, enjoying the cool smoothness of the dress.
"There's also a matching pair of, what did you say these were called, Kitten heels?" V opened the shoe box, revealing a pair of heels in the same color as the dress.
"Correct." The dark-skinned man smiled as she took the shoes. "From what V told me about you, I figured you would prefer something with a lower heel."
"I...Don't know what to say?"
"Why don't you wait until you try the dress on." V teased moving to gently push her towards their bedroom so she could change. "And then give your opinion."
"Oh, alright." Gloria gave in and did as V asked. Stepping into the bedroom, she closed the door and shed her casual clothing in favor of slipping on the dress.
God. She looked amazing.
V must have taken a pair of her shoes with him, as the heels were a perfect fit and provided just the right amount of lift. And her measurements from when she first came home must have still been on file as the dress was almost perfect. It was loose enough to not restrict her movement, but tight enough to accentuate all her curves. Her only complaint? It was a little shorter than she would have liked – only coming about a quarter of the way down her thigh.
But overall?
"Well?" She stepped out of the bedroom and stood before her audience. Clayborn and Shirley nodded politely and offered up compliments. Zane grinned, patting V on the shoulder and making some comment about the red really being her color.
And Gloria had a feeling that if they didn't have company, V would have already had the dress off her.
"You look good. Really good." Gloria smiled as she felt V's eyes roving over her body.
"Thanks...Although don't you think its a little short?" Her hands moved down to the hem of the dress and tried to pull it down a little. Standing, she knew it provided ample coverage but couldn't help but wonder if it would stay in place while sitting. "Maybe wear pantyhose or leggings with it?"
"Let me see..." Zane moved to her side, looking at her from different angles. "If you want, we can add another inch or two of length to the bottom without compromising the overall look of the dress. Personally however, I think it is fine as is."
"I just don't want to risk it riding up and giving everyone a show." Gloria took a moment to sit, feeling the fabric shift against her thigh. Her eyes drifted to her legs, making sure she was still properly covered. "Okay, no issues there...But maybe-"
"Gloria, stand up please?" She heard Shirley ask, noticing the woman was holding a length of fabric. "Let's see how you like it with an extra inch."
"I know I like an extra inch." Clayborn quipped, bringing a laugh from everyone in the room as he and Shirley worked on pinning a little extra length to the dress. "Alright, try sitting down now."
"Oh that feels much better." Gloria smiled as she sat down and stood up a few times, taking a couple steps around the apartment. Maybe it was a result of her not usually showing that much skinn, but she felt a lot more confident with that little extra bit of fabric. She moved over to V, but looked at Zane. "Could we add the length, please?"
"If you wish." V kissed her on the temple. "Zane? How long will the alteration take?"
"I can have the dress ready for pick up in two hours." The head designer nodded. "Unfortunately it will be a day or two before I'll have the other items ready."
"Wonderful." By the tone in V's voice, Gloria had a feeling this wouldn't be the only time she'd be wearing that dress today. "Gloria, why don't you change back while I finish up here?"
Gloria nodded, moving back to the bedroom and changing back into her original outfit. By the time she returned, Zane and his team had everything packed and were finishing up business with V. Shirley took the dress from her and returned it to the bag, telling her she could hold onto the shoes. The three designers bid them farewell and took their leave, leaving her alone in the apartment with V.
"Well, that was interesting." Gloria hummed as V wrapped his arms around her.
"But did you have fun?" He asked as she returned the embrace.
"Kind of. I mean, I liked seeing all the outfits on the screen and being able to customize them in an instant..." By the way he tensed slightly against her, Gloria could tell V knew there was a but coming. "But I prefer to be able to shop the racks, look at what's available and go from there."
V made a small noise of acknowledgment, and Gloria felt him deflate just slightly against her. He must have realized she felt him, as not a second later he perked back up and kissed the top of her head.
"Well, guess we'll just have to have a round two when we go to pick up your dress." Another kiss. "Just thought I'd give you a taste of how the rich like to shop."
"V, no. You don't need to. I'm just saying-"
"Nope, too late. Already contacted Zane and told him to have a sales rep ready." He grinned, and she frowned. "Oh no, no frowning today. Now, I don't know about you, but I'm getting hungry." V released her, moving over to the fridge. Her frown lessened slightly as V pulled a large insulated bag from within and held it up.
"And what is that?"
"Another surprise." He adjusted his grip on the bag. "Now, if you don't want to wait too long for this surprise. Get your shoes on."
V had already moved to grab his shoes, and Gloria couldn't help but laugh as he stumbled slightly trying to put on his sneakers. Slipping his free hand into hers, he escorted her into the elevator and kept holding her hand as they made their way out to the parking lot. She thought V would go for his Ragnar, but instead he lead her over to what appeared to be a Quartz – in particular the Sidewinder variant.
"V, what's this?"
"Our wheels." He held up the control key.
"Seriously?" She ran her hand over the frame, feeling the various dings and chips in the paint. "This, looks like that old Quartz you used to use when you'd try to slum it with us street kids." V started to chuckle. "Don't tell me it is."
"Sadly no." V moved around to the back and stored the bag, gesturing for her to get in. "But its the closest thing Falco had in his collection that he was willing to let me get my hands on."
"Wait, Falco let you borrow one of his cars?" She asked as they climbed in.
"No, he sold it to me." Gloria's mouth hit the floor at how casual V sounded about it. "What? You know I've got the eddies to spare. And I paid in paper so that it wouldn't be traceable back to either of us."
"It's not that...I'm just amazed the guy parted with it." She ran her hand along the interior as V started to drive. "...How did you get him to agree anyhow?"
"Told him I wanted to take you out driving in the Badlands like we used to as part of our date nights." He smiled. "Asked him if I knew where I could get a suitable pair of wheels. He laughed, before offering me this beautiful little Sidewinder."
"Vinny, Vinny, Vinny." Gloria shook her head, chest shaking as she held in her laughter. "You know that this means he's going to want some sort of favor in return, right?"
She had never heard to Falco lending out, let alone selling, any of his vehicles without at least one string attached.
"Yeah probably." V nodded in agreement. "But I don't mind. It's all worth it to see you smile."
"That was corny." The red-head gently poked his arm, before letting her hand rest on his leg as V drove them through the streets of Night City and then out to the Badlands.
❀( ˘ ³˘)~ (⁎❛ᴗ❛⁎)❀
While shopping from home for designed clothing was a new experience that left her feeling a little overwhelmed...There was an odd comfort in the pure nostalgia of the current moment.
They had left the roads running through the Badlands in favor of driving on the sands and through the dunes at high speeds. V had the radio cranked up and playing loud rock music as they drove. The noise and the dust they stirred up attracted the attention of some Aldecados, who were quick to join in on the fun. After an impromptu race (which V won) the Nomads had invited the two back to their camp, but V declined the invitation and instead asked if they knew someplace more private.
The end result? A set of coordinates that lead to a rocky outcrop that gave a spectacular view of the canyon below. Upon arrival, V had instructed her to cover her eyes and stay in the car while he set up 'her next surprise'. She heard the trunk open, and the sound of stuff being shuffled and grabbed before another thunk told her he closed it. After a few minutes of silence, she heard V open her door.
"Can I get out now?"
"Yes, but keep your eyes closed." V's hands gently took her own as she giggled and let him pull her out of the car and a few paces away. "Sit down?" He helped lower her to the ground, registering the feel of a blanket under her hand. "Comfy? Good, open your eyes now."
Gloria opened her eyes, blinking against the brightness as she looked at what lay on the blanket before her. A small cooler with some Cirrus colas on ice, a package of store-bought cookies, and a pizza box of all things. Off to the side was an old boombox, playing some soft rock.
"Not the most traditional picnic, but our relationship isn't the most traditional so-"
"It's perfect." She cut him off, feeling her chest swell with delight that V had recreated one of the first meals they shared together. "But did you get the pizza right?"
"Why don't you open it and see?" There was a playful challenge in his voice as he grabbed a couple Cirrus from the cooler. Giving a nod, Gloria complied and opened up the box.
A pan-style pizza loaded with sauce, cheese, and toppings she recognized as pepperoni and what might have been bacon met her eyes. She couldn't decide if it was a testament to the car's suspension, V's driving, the box, or the chef themselves that it looked so perfect after their playing around. Maybe it also helped that it was cold...Just like the first one they had shared all those years ago.
"Well, it looks good...But didn't we have a Greek-style crust?" She teased, reaching out to take a slice as V rolled his eyes and told her to just try it. It pulled away with only minor difficulty, a few small tendrils of cheese breaking away as she brought the slice up to her mouth. "Here goes..."
Even though it was cold, her mouth was flooded with flavor; the spiciness of the pepperoni, the savory of bacon, the robust zest of the sauce and the cooling effect of the cheese. A highly suggestive hum escaped her as she chewed the greasy ambrosia before swallowing it with an airy sigh.
"Well?" V asked, looking nervous (and slightly aroused) as he awaited her answer.
"Forgive me Buck-a-slice...But this is the best pizza I've ever had." She took another bite and chewed contently, seeing V grab one for himself. "Where did you get this?"
"I made it."
Her third bite stalled on the way to her mouth, audio processors trying to fathom what she heard. She knew V could cook, but for him to have made something like this? God, if she wasn't already sleeping with him she'd have jumped his bones and rode him until the sun came up.
"I thought I loved you before, now I know I do." The bite finally reached her mouth, and she let out another noise of bliss as V laughed.
"Maybe I should have made this for you sooner." V chuckled, taking another bite of his slice. "Although I'm not sure how often I can make this particular variant." She hummed in interest as she took another bite. "I mean, it's easy enough to get the 'ganic sauce and meats. But it took me longer than I'd care to admit to get my hands on some 'ganic mozzarella. Flour to make the dough was easy enough thanks to Mama Welles but...Gloria, you okay honey?"
"This...This is 'ganic pizza?" Her first slice was now gone, and there were still six left in the box. She wanted another one, but hesitated now that she heard it was all organic as opposed to synthetic? And the time it must have taken to make it? Wait, when did he make this? Was that why he went heavy on the maple and cinnamon this morning? To mask the smell?
Never mind that he could have just gotten Buck-a-slice or any other carry out pizza. Hell, the first time they shared a pizza it had been a frozen one. Why did he go through so much trouble?
"A special treat, for my special girl." He kissed her, holding up his half-eaten slice to her mouth afterwards. A wordless invitation for her to take a bite. "Now eat."
Knowing V wouldn't take no for an answer, Gloria sighed and took a bite.
"Just enjoy it girl." She told herself as she picked up another slice and let V finish his, trying to ignore the other little voice inside her telling her that something was off about this whole situation.
❀( ˘ ³˘)~ (⁎❛ᴗ❛⁎)❀
After their picnic was done and everything packed away, V had driven them back to Night City and over to Jinguji to pick up her altered dress. The alteration had been seamless, no sign that anything had been changed – save for where it fell against her legs. And true to his earlier promise, V let her have a proper round of shopping and browsing the racks. While they may not have been her custom outfits, she did find several items that just had to come home with her now.
"See?" Gloria hummed as she climbed into their car. "Wasn't it more fun actually watching me model the clothes as opposed to a virtual version of me?"
"Maybe." V answered as he joined her. "Will admit your ass looked great in that lingerie set you bought...Wear it tonight?"
"Sure." She laughed as V punched the air in victory as he started to drive. "So what's the plan now?"
"Now? We go back home, relax, and freshen up before dinner."
"Sure." Gloria nodded, playfully sniffing at herself. "Could probably use a shower after sitting out in the sand all day."
V hummed in agreement. "Yeah. We might have been sitting on a blanket but...I've got sand in a very uncomfortable place."
He shifted in the seat, one hand adjusting his crotch as she laughed at the sight. The ride back home passed quickly, and V sent her to put away her purchases as he took care of the few leftovers.
"Just make sure you keep your new dress out." He called. "Want you to wear it tonight when we go out for dinner."
The thought of wearing her new dress out sent a shiver of delight, but also caused a spike in her anxiety. Where could they possibly be going that would require her to dress up so much? Better yet, why was V taking her someplace so nice? Before her thoughts could go off on a tangent, she felt V's arms wrap around her.
"Gloria? You okay?" She felt his lips on her ear.
"I'm fine. Maybe just a little intimidated at the thought of wearing something so..." She struggled to find the right word, "so rich?"
"Well don't be." He squeezed her, the gesture comforting. "You are beautiful. Gorgeous. And everyone deserves to see that." She felt his arms adjust their grip before feeling herself be picked up. "Now come on, I think I know something else that will help you relax."
"Vinny..." She wrapped her arms around him as he carried her out of their bedroom and to the bathroom. Sitting her on the toilet, she watched as he set the controls on the shower. Only once the water was steaming did he give her a single command.
"Strip." He shed his own clothing, eyes never leaving her body as she complied. Once they were both naked, he opened the door to the shower and stepped in, one hand reaching out to take her own and pull her in with him. He pulled her close, letting the hot water cascade over both of them. "There, doesn't this feel nice?"
She hummed, enjoying the warmth of the water on her back and the feeling of V's skin against her own in the front. The two stayed like that a few moments, before she felt V gently push her away. A tiny whine escaped her at the loss of his touch, making him let out a little laugh as he reached for his shower gel.
Sadness at the loss of his touch was forgotten. Replaced with amusement that for all of V's like of luxury goods...He still persisted in using one of those cheap three-in-one shower gels to wash with.
"Told you I want to freshen up a little." He smiled at her faux pouting, proceeding to squirt some of the gel into his hands and start to lather himself up. "Feel free to wash up as well."
"Nah. Rather just stand here and perv on you..." She replied, but still reached for her own bottle of body wash. A special blend designed to help keep all her synthetic components looking their best. After a few minutes of keeping his hands to himself, V was helping her wash her back before proceeding to help her wash her hair. "Vinny, you don't-"
"Shh." He shushed her, hands gently smoothing back her hair and shifting her so that she was fully under the water. "Just relax." His nails started scratching at her scalp with each pass, sending a bolt of pleasure through her body.
"V..." She whined, eyes closing in pure pleasure at the sensation. It was so relaxing. So soothing. And so intimate that Gloria felt tears forming in her eyes as V's hands worked their magic on her scalp. Not for the first time, she wondered why Gemini had given their FBC's the ability to shed tears (the manual said something about crying being a human trait and as a way to clean the optics). She tried to protest, but he just dug his nails in further and continued to whisper affections and affirmations to her.
"That's right, relax. Just focus on my touch." He kissed her forehead, making her whimper.
"Vinny, no..." She tried to protest, feeling guilty at how much love and affection he was (literally) showering her with, but he shushed her.
"Yes." His hands moved to her shoulders, squeezing at just the right point. "I don't want to hear it. You deserve all this and more. So much more..." She moaned as he started to massage them. "So just relax, and enjoy."
Whining again, Gloria resigned herself to her fate as V's hands left her shoulders in favor of returning to her scalp.

Following their shower, which left Gloria feeling like she was made out of jelly, V told her it was time to get dressed for the next and final part of his surprise; dinner at Bleu - one of Night City's finest restaurants.
"Calm down Gloria, its just dinner." She told herself, following him into the restaurant. "At one of Night City's fanciest restaurants."
Once known as La Lune Bleu, there were rumors that you couldn't even book a table unless you were dressed just right. She didn't think it would matter all that much, they were dressed to the nines in her opinion. Her in her new dress and him in a three-piece suit; a sharp jet black number with an undershirt the same color as her dress.
She looked around, appreciating the soft white and blue interior of the restaurant and the minimalist décor as V lead her over to the host.
"Bonjour, do you have a reservation?" The maitre'd greeted them as they approached the podium he was standing at.
"Yes. Should be under the name Vincent Linder." V answered, smiling as the maitre'd checked his records.
"Table for two, yes?" The man asked, and V nodded. Gloria smiled as the maitre'd lead them to a secluded table in the corner of the restaurant. As they sat, the maitre'd lit the candles on the centerpiece of the table. Handed them their menus and made a few recommendations as he poured them a couple glasses of water. With a bow, he dismissed himself, telling them their server would be with them momentarily. Following V's lead, Gloria gave a nod as the maitre'd departed, leaving the two of them alone for the moment.
Picking up her menu, Gloria tried to focus on the various dishes the place was offering...But the prices kept her from really taking in her options. "I know V can afford it but sixty eddies for a dozen raw oysters? That's five eddies a shell...I could get a week's worth of ramen and wontons for the same price. And what-"
"Gloria? You okay?"
"Huh?" She flipped her menu down, feeling V's gaze upon her.
"You look a little nervous." He replied, reaching out for his water.
"Maybe." Gloria fidgeted with her dress, as if making sure she was properly covered. "Everything's just so...fancy? And expensive."
"Don't be nervous. And don't worry about the prices, this is my treat to you." One of his hands reached across the table, palm up in a wordless request for her to take it. She complied and he gently caressed it with his thumb. "Most of this is just a front to keep the...lower classes out. A place where those of a higher standing can relax after the day."
"That doesn't make me feel any better." She frowned, and V rolled his eyes.
"Okay, let me put it this way." He released her hand, taking up his menu again. "They're not going to kick us out just because you used the wrong fork...Or burped loud enough to stun the restaurant into silence."
"That was one time." Gloria sighed, hands coming up to hide her face in a sense of proud shame at the memory as the server greeted them warmly.
"Would you care for a sample of our Porsecco?" The server held up a bottle, showing the label to the two of them. "Or maybe a glass of one of our other wines? Or fine spirits perhaps?"
"Oh, I didn't even look at the drinks." She ducked her head a little, reaching for her menu but stopped when V's hand held her own in place.
"No thank you, but I would like a glass of the Pinot Noir. And I think my lady would appreciate a glass of the Sauvignon Blanc." V answered, and Gloria felt herself relax.
"I would, thank you." She trusted his judgment as the server gave a nod and went to get their drinks and give them a little more time to look over the menu.
"Thank you...I wouldn't have known what to order." She looked back at the menu, trying to focus more on the dishes instead of the prices. "An-any recommendations?"
Seafood was a rare treat growing up, and became even rarer in her later years. She was quite fond of shrimp, but felt a little odd at the thought of just ordering shrimp from a place this elegant.
"Well, if you want to seem like you know what you're doing with food and wine pairings..." V slid his menu across the table and pointed to a couple of the entrees. "The grilled chicken or shrimp would pair nicely. Or if you'd rather go meatless, the olive oil or alfredo pastas would also work."
"They both sound good..." She hummed, trying to decide which sounded better. She could have chicken, well syn-chicken, any time while the shrimp...wait, was this 'ganic shrimp or that weird imitation stuff? The menu didn't specify but before she could ask V, the server had returned.
"Do you know what you'd like to order?" He asked, placing their respective wines before them along with some silverware.
"Yes." Once again, V took the lead. "I'll have the sixteen ounce grilled salmon with the rice pilaf, although may I change the asparagus for broccoli, please?"
"Of course." The server turned to her, "and for you, madamoiselle?"
"May I get an order of the grilled chicken and shrimp linguine?"
"Excellent choice." With another tip of his head, the server left them in peace to put in their orders.
"Chicken and shrimp?" V smiled, taking a sip of his wine.
"I couldn't decide...You made them both sound really good. And I haven't had shrimp in ages." She took a sip of her own wine. "Although I forgot to ask if that's 'ganic or imitation."
"Everything here is 'ganic." The casual reply made her flinch. She could get used to this kind of treatment one day...But today wasn't that day. "This is one of the few places in Night City to get quality 'ganic seafood."
"Really?" She took another sip of wine. "Where are the others?"
V chuckled, going off on a tangent about food as they waited for their orders to arrive. When they did, Gloria was surprise at how artfully arranged everything was. Slices of grilled chicken and half a dozen seasoned and grilled shrimp were fanned out over a bed of lightly sauced linguine. Two triangular slices of garlic toast rested on a side plate, along with a small cup of lemon wedges.
She looked over at V's plate; a center cut piece of salmon rested beside a pile of rice pilaf and steamed broccoli. It wasn't as artful as hers, but it still looked and smelled amazing.
"Are you going to try your meal or just admire it?" V teased, taking up his fork and trying a bite of his rice.
"It's just so pretty..." She batted her eyelashes while reaching for her own silverware. Taking up her fork, she carefully twirled a few strands of linguine around her fork. "Alright, here goes..."
She popped the bite in her mouth and was greeted with a light garlic and butter flavor. She tried the chicken and the shrimp as well; both of them had been seasoned with a lemon herb marinade that both enhanced and contrasted the softness of the pasta's flavor.
"Well?"
"How the hell does food manage to taste rich?" She picked up a lemon wedge and squeezed it over her shrimp before taking another bite. "Like, I know shrimp has a really rich flavor to begin with but this?"
"Oh believe me, I know. That's why even I keep meals like this as a rare treat." He carefully cut off a small corner of his salmon and balanced it on a forkful of rice. "Care to try mine?"
"Thank you, but no thank you." Gloria shook her head, taking a sip of her wine. "Maybe it was how it was prepared, but the one time I ate fish-fish I got horribly sick."
"Understandable." V ate the bite he prepared, before picking up just a forkful of rice. "At least try the rice?"
"Only if you try my pasta." The pair giggled as they traded bites of their meal, conversations about their younger days flowing smoothly as they ate. Perfect as everything was, Gloria still couldn't shake the feeling that this whole day had been leading up to...Something.
As the server brought over her favorite dessert, chocolate lava cake and some coffees - which V must have ordered while she was in the bathroom. Gloria felt she couldn't hold her curiosity in anymore and decided to confront him on the matter.
"Vinny? Not that I'm complaining..." She took a small bite of cake, "definitely not complaining. But what is all this about?"
"Excuse me?" V tried, and failed a little in feigning ignorance.
"The clothes. The pizza. This dinner?" She gestured to the restaurant. "Again, not that I'm complaining, but why treat me to all this?"
"Because you deserve it?" V held a bite of cake out to her.
"Maybe, but you know I'm just as happy eating instant noodles and watching TV with you as I am sitting here." Gloria ate the bite, washing it down with a sip of coffee. "And that's on top of the two shopping sprees you treated me to."
"You've been working hard recently." He sipped at his own coffee. "Helping Nadia and the crew – especially Maine and Dorio."
Gloria chuckled, remembering how she roped V into tracking down all the latest pregnancy shards for the happy couple after she couldn't find her old ones.
"Speaking of, you think Maine's still alive?" A tiny laugh escaped V, the pair having mentioned going to meet with Dorio's parents since they were going to be in town sometime this week.
"Don't change the subject, but yeah, he's alive." She fed him a bite of cake. "But I'm just doing what any good friend would do. Nothing that deserves a day like this in my opinion."
"Well yes, but..." V started, but upon seeing her expression sighed and gave up the fight. "You're right. I did have an ulterior motive for everything today..."
Gloria felt her breath hitch in her throat as V's face took on a nervous expression.
"I wanted you to feel relaxed. Feel loved." While she couldn't see it, she could tell his leg was shaking slightly. "Before I tell you that..."
"V?" Her voice was gentle, trying to steady him even as his own voice failed him. What had her man so nervous all of a sudden? Wait, was he going to pro-
"The Bastard has invited us to dinner."
"What?" Of all the things he could have said, that had been low on her list of options. But it made sense now, this day was as much for him as it was for her.
"The Bastard has invited us to dinner." He repeated, face contorting in discomfort. "I mentioned it to David back when he first got his hands on me."
"So he told me." She nodded, "and I told him to tell you no and decline the invite."
"I know." V held his coffee, as if taking comfort from the warmth of the cup. "And I've made a couple excuses as to why I have not brought either of you to meet with him yet...But I really can't afford to stall any longer without causing problems."
That much was understandable. Gloria had a feeling that if V didn't bring them to him, that he would find a way to come to them. Better to know what they were walking into than being caught off guard.
"And what about Lucy?" While only recently official, Gloria had long accepted the thought of Lucy as her daughter-in-law.
"This is supposed to be a family dinner, and she's...Not family." V held up his hands and ducked his head a little, realizing how that must have sounded to her. "Not officially, at least. That and, I don't want to traumatize the poor girl."
"Understandable." Gloria nodded, taking another drink of her coffee. She had seen how Lucy acted towards V...How would the poor girl handle what was, in her opinion, evil incarnate? "Have you told David about this?"
"Uhm...I was, hoping we could, tell him together?" V rubbed the back of his neck. "He's...kind of not accepting my calls."
"I wonder why..." She chuckled, appreciating the brevity that comment brought. Never mind that David was also kind of ignoring her (at least he'd pick up and lie about being busy and unable to talk). "But seriously, we do need to talk to him about this...and that."
"We do." He nodded in agreement as the server returned with their bill and a couple after dinner mints. Before she could even steal a glance at the check, V had picked it up and was attaching a cred chip to it. "Want to call him when we're done here?"
"Tomorrow." Gloria picked up one of the mints and popped it in her mouth. "Give us a little time to think of what to say to him."
"Of course." V gave a nod of agreement as the server returned to settle their bill. Telling the man it was all set, V slipped his arm through hers and escorted them out of the restaurant and back to their penthouse.

The days after V's revelation about dinner with his family passed a little too quick in Gloria's opinion. After discussing the best way to broach the subject with their son, the pair had decided to head over to David's to have the discussion in private. He agreed, on the condition that the two of them provide dinner for him and Lucy.
Over a tray of Gloria's famous bean burritos and rice, the pair had broken the news to David that they had to meet with V's father for dinner. David had been surprised at first, but after hearing V's explanation, was oddly accepting of the situation. His acceptance only grew after V revealed that Lucy would not be required to attend this particular meeting.
Gloria thought it was because David understood the need to help V out in maintaining his cover.
V thought it was because David was curious to learn more about his past.
Their son's actual reason? Schadenfreude.
"I have no history with the guy. Meanwhile I get to watch you two in an awkward situation." David said, smiling smugly as he sipped his tea. Neither one could argue his logic, and accepted the rebuttal. To give the two a taste of what they could expect from him, V called up his father shortly after to get the detes.
While David didn't seem bothered by V's show, Gloria felt uncomfortable by how formal and agreeable V was acting. She knew it was just an act, that V would never willingly go along with anything the man wanted. But it didn't make it any easier for her to watch as V got the detes about their meeting.
The plan was simple; In two days time, V would bring her and David to meet his parents (and sister) at Pepper and Spice. Some place public and open so that neither side could (hopefully) cause much of a scene. David promised to be on his best behavior, wanting to see V's family for himself. And she agreed that she would be civil towards his family, but admitted she wasn't about to forgive the guy. V agreed with her, but admitted that if any sort of argument or disagreement came up, that he would have to side more with his father...But would give them his real thoughts once they were done for the evening.
Gloria had been a ball of nerves for the rest of the day after their meeting with David. And her nervousness had only grown the closer her "reunion" with V's family got. She couldn't remember anything about the day before the meeting, save V taking David out shopping for something nice to wear.
Even now, as she sat in V's Ragnar as they drove to the restaurant, Gloria realized she couldn't remember much about the morning. All that she could remember was how carefully she had looked through her wardrobe, trying to decide on an outfit with V's help.
Eventually, she had decided on one of the casual evening dresses Zane and his team designed for her; a crimson ruffled sleeveless midi evening gown. She also had a baby pink sweater jacket to wear over it in case she felt cold. A pair of strappy heels that matched the jacket were on her feet. Wanting to keep with the casual, she had let her hair down, keeping it out of her eyes with a simple cloth headband that matched her dress.
V had smiled approvingly at her choice, doing his best to pick an outfit that would compliment hers. He had decided on his black two-piece suit. And had chosen a button up shirt that matched her dress. To keep it simple, V had decided against a tie, but still opted for his derby shoes that he had polished to perfection.
Seeing V looking so sharp was almost worth the stress.
However, seeing how good they looked made her concerned for what David might be wearing, but V assured her he had helped him out too. Something that became clear when David met them outside his apartment. Gloria couldn't help but smile at how well her baby had cleaned up. He was wearing a white collar shirt underneath a black jacket that was similar to the one he wore while attending the Academy, and a pair of loose fitting black jeans. Her only complaint about his choice of outfit? The all black running shoes he chose to wear instead of his dress shoes.
"Not that I blame you for wanting to be able to literally run if we have to." She had kept the thought to herself, instead teasing her boy as he had hopped into the car.
And now, as V parked their car and escorted them to the restaurant, she caught sight of their reflections in the glass windows. Seeing themselves all dressed up, Gloria couldn't help but feel they looked like your typical corporate family.
Something she hoped The Bastard ("Mister Linder, Gloria." She reminded herself.) would approve of.
"Now remember, you don't have to answer anything you're not comfortable with." V reminded them as he held the door open, letting Gloria and David in first before following behind. "Just be honest when you can, alright?"
"Of course V, I mean pops? I mean, dad?" David frowned, "uh...What am I supposed to refer to you as?"
"You can just call me V if you're not comfortable calling me dad or any variant." V replied, seeing David sigh in relief. "Know you've kind of gone back and forth on that."
"Promise I'll decide one day." He agreed, and Gloria felt herself relax just slightly. At least her little family was mending, a small comfort she could look forward to after-
"Ah Vincent. There you are." As jovial as the voice to call out to V sounded, Gloria found it sent a chill down her spine. Her step faltered slightly as her eyes fell upon the source of the voice.
Mister Linder looked both like she remembered him, yet at the same time different. He still stood just a slight bit taller than V, but Gloria had a feeling the cane he was slightly leaning on wasn't just for show. His once golden hair now had strands of silver here and there. His eyes, those storm gray orbs that originally looked at her with fury and contempt. Now seemed to regard her with a gentle curiosity.
What struck her the most was his choice of clothing. Every time she had met with Mister Linder, the man had never been wearing less than a full suit. Now however he was wearing a black sweater vest over a long sleeved white collar shirt, and a simple pair of dress slacks.
"Father." V gave a nod of greeting as the man walked over to meet them. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed David had tensed up, possibly getting ready to run. She wanted to reassure her boy, but found she couldn't look away from the approaching man.
"Just relax Gloria." She told herself, hoping her face wasn't showing her stress as she watched Mister Linder give V a pat on the back, the two exchanging greetings before his eyes fell upon her and David. "Wonder who he's going to greet first?"
"Ah, and who is this lovely lady?" She saw the older man take a couple steps towards her, an oddly warm smile on his face.
"Father, you...Actually I'm not sure if you remember Gloria?"
"This is Gloria?" She had to give the old man credit, he almost sounded impressed. "Almost didn't recognize you. You've, and please don't misunderstand me, but you've matured a lot from that scrappy teen you once were."
"Uh..." Gloria didn't know what to say. He wasn't exactly wrong, but...
"Look, I know we didn't part on the best of terms." Mister Linder bowed his head, and Gloria had to hold back a snort. "But I'm a changed man, and I wish to make amends for my actions in the past."
"Then why don't you leave my family alone?" The words were out before she had a chance to stop them, one hand moving to cover her mouth.
"Gloria, my fath-" V sighed and started to speak, but Mister Linder raised a hand to stop him.
"No Vincent." He shook his head, and V gave a tiny dip of his head. "Given the man I was, Gloria is perfectly justified with her request." His attention shifted back to her. "And I can understand where you're coming from, given our history. But I have changed. Ah, ah. Before you say anything, just give me a chance. Sit down and share a meal with me before you make any final calls."
She sighed, looking to V who was nodding slightly.
"He's right, Gloria." He replied, expression set in a hopeful smile. "Give him a chance. After all, it has been eighteen years since you two last met. Not to mention..." V moved to stand beside David. "He hasn't even had a chance to meet his grandson yet."
"Oh that's right." Gloria was simultaneously relieved that Mister Linder's attention was off her. But at the same time, her motherly instincts went up to eleven as his attention shifted to David. She stood, watching as Mister Linder looked David over. Saw him give a single nod before he extended his hand for David to shake. "Forgive me for not acknowledging you sooner. But its a pleasure to finally meet my grandson in person."
"Nice to meet you too, sir." David returned the handshake, making the old man laugh.
"Oh don't be so formal. You can call me grandfather if you wish. Anyways, that's a nice firm grip you got there." Mister Linder gave David a pat on his arm. "You'll go far with a handshake like that."
"Uh thank you? I learned from the best." David tipped his head towards V, making him grin with fatherly pride. Unnerved as she was at the whole situation, Gloria had to admit she was proud of David for facing this challenge head on.
"Well, if that's what your old man taught you. Imagine all the things I can teach you with my years of experience." He raised his cane and tapped his head. "Anyhow, we've spent enough time getting acquainted and reacquainted. And I fear your grandmother's wrath if I don't bring you and your mother over to see her soon...Or what your aunt might do if I don't let her order something soon."
"Well, we best not keep her waiting then." V took a step back, letting his father take the lead. Wordlessly, he held out his arm for her to take, reminding her of the various signals they had agreed upon as she took his arm and followed behind.
"I get to meet my grandmother and my aunt?" David blinked, falling in step with Mister Linder. "Thought I was just meeting you tonight?"
"Oh no no. This is supposed to be a family dinner." He laughed. "Doesn't make sense for only me to be here."
Gloria couldn't help the shudder that ran through her as David joined him in laughing. Praying that God was listening to her prayers that David not be swayed by the old man's false charm. At her side, she felt V gently squeeze her arm, a gesture she knew meant he understood her feelings.
Nodding a thank you, she focused her attention on where they were walking. He was leading them to a table near the back of the restaurant. Gloria could see that it was set for six, but that only one of the chairs was currently occupied. The table's sole occupant was an older woman with grayed hair and gentle brown eyes. She was wearing a white maxi dress with a lilac print with a white cardigan covering her arms. While she had only met the woman two or three times, Gloria recognized her as V's mother.
"Oh Eleanor?" Mister Linder's voice was almost playful. "Look who I found."
The woman's face lit up as she turned to see the four of them approaching. Smiling, she pushed away from the table, arms open as she moved towards David.
"Vincent? Is this my grandson?" Before anyone could stop her, she had slipped her arms around David and pulled him in for a hug. Both Mister Linder and V chuckled, while David looked confused as to how best to respond. Gloria was torn between wanting to laugh (recalling how her own parents had handled meeting David) and wanting to tear her son away from the woman. "Oh, I'm sorry. Probably should have asked if I could hug you."
"It's alright uh, Missus Linder-" David smiled, gently hugging her in return.
"Oh please, you can call me Grandma, or Nana, or Grandmother." She smiled, "really any title is fine with me. But I do hope it matches with whatever you've chosen to call your grandfather."
"Oh sure, uh, Grandmother." Her son blinked as she let him go, and Gloria felt pleased that David had chosen the most formal title for the woman.
"Mama Welles can be Abuela, and Mama can be Grandma." She smiled, giving him an approving nod as both of them turned to look at her.
"Oh! And Gloria." Once again, Eleanor seemed to forget her manners in her excitement and proceeded to hug her. "It's wonderful to see you again dear." She took a step back, arms holding her in place. Gloria was thankful for her artificial body's ability to hold its complexion. And expression.
Otherwise she'd have probably shoved the woman away and made for the door by now.
"What the hell? V's mother was never this accepting of me." She took a moment to study the woman before her. Instead of the condescending polite corpo matron from her youth, Eleanor seemed more like your typical mother whose happy her son finally got a girlfriend stereotype. "Something's wrong..."
"Nice to see you again too, Missus Linder." Figuring it would be best to play along, Gloria went formal in referring to the woman before her.
"Oh please, you can call me Eleanor." The older woman's hands fell away from her arms, and Gloria breathed an internal sigh of relief.
"And please, call me Robert." Mister Linder gestured to the table, motioning that they should be seated. She noticed that Robert sat in the center, while Eleanor returned to her place at the corner. V spared her some discomfort by sitting across from his father, but a slight tip of his head indicated that she should sit opposite his mother, while David went on his other side. "Now Eleanor, where is Valerie?"
"Right here, father." The new voice made Gloria jump, and she turned to see a teenage girl approaching the table. Right away, Gloria could see the familial resemblance between this newcomer and the rest of the Linder family. She stopped eyes going first to her, and then to David. "Hello brother. And is this my nephew and potential sister-in-law? I'm Valerie, and its a pleasure to meet you."
Gloria was almost thankful that Valerie's greeting was less physical than Eleanor's, and more informal than Robert's. Still, she accepted the girl's outstretched hand and introduced herself, letting David do the same as they all sat down around the table.
"Do I know you?" The question made Gloria raise an eyebrow. Had David made contact with her and not known? "I feel I've seen you somewhere before."
"I don't think so." Valerie's eyes appraised David's outfit. "Wait, did you attend Arasaka Academy? I was there on a training assignment at one point. Maybe you passed me in the halls?"
"Maybe." David seemed content with that idea, and Gloria felt herself relax a little as the two let the subject go as a waiter came over to take their drink orders and hand out menus. While V and his parents opted for wine, Gloria wanted to make sure she had a clear head and followed David and Valerie in ordering raspberry ice tea.
An awkward tension seemed to hang between the two sides of the table as the waiter took his leave and everyone began to look over the menu.
"Now, don't worry about how much something costs – this is on me tonight." Robert smiled, "so if you see something you want to try. Go ahead and order it."
Gloria nodded her agreement, not quite trusting her voice as she started looking over the menu. There were so many options and combinations that she didn't know what to go for. Not to mention, she didn't recognize half of the items on the menu. She looked to her side, seeing V nod as he set aside his menu. Tilting her head a little more gave her a perfect view of David looking puzzled as he stared at the menu.
"Does this place have burgers?" The question was so casual, yet David made it sound oddly serious.
"Ugh, what kind of a dumb question is that?" Valerie rolled her eyes, but there was no malice in her voice or the gesture. Eleanor giggled a little while V sighed. Robert laughed openly and shook his head as he addressed David.
"Well, they don't have traditional burgers. But they do have hambagu – or hamburger steak. It can be a bit heavy, but its oh so savory."
"Ah, maybe I'll try it...Unless this place has chicken fingers?"
"Are we sure he's older than me?" Somehow, that second question dissolved a good amount of tension in the air between the blood members of the Linder family. She noticed V and David had relaxed, and even Robert looked more amused than offended at the question. Only Eleanor didn't seem affected, choosing instead to chastise her daughter.
"Valerie, be nice." Eleanor chided her, "your nephew just isn't accustomed to fusion cuisine. Isn't that right, David?"
"Uh yeah." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm used to smaller menus, that's all."
As the Linder family laughed and asked a few questions to David (mostly basic 'getting to know you' ones) – Gloria instead focused on her menu. She had half a mind to order the most expensive items on it just to take advantage of The Bastard's wallet, but knew it wouldn't affect him much. If at all.
When the waiter came back to take their orders, she had picked something middle of the road price-wise (the Asian egg crepes) and agreed with the table wide decision to get a couple orders of the Caribbean style chicken satay as an appetizer.
"So Gloria, aside from raising my grandson, what have you been up to these last eighteen years?" Eleanor asked her as they waited for their food. While she was determined to not talk to Robert anymore than she had to. Gloria felt a little reluctant to ignore Eleanor's question.
"It probably wasn't her idea all those years ago...Plus, she doesn't seem all there right now." Keeping that in mind. "Not much really. I mean, I'm not sure if you remember that I was working on getting my certifications to be an EMT?" She saw both of the older Linders nod while Valerie looked intrigued. "Well, I got them and got a job working for the City a few years after David was born. Worked that job up until about a year ago."
"Really?" Valerie asked, "so why did you leave such an in demand job?"
The question made Gloria pause. The only reason she had been let go from her job was because of the amount of time she needed to take off from work to recover from the accident. "I should tell the truth, but are they going to be content with me whining about how the Corporate system screwed me over?"
"Well-"
"Your appetizers." Their waiter returned and set down two plates of chicken skewers. "Your meals should be out in the next ten minutes or so, but do you need anything else in the meantime?"
Various replies of no came from around the table, and Gloria was all set to resume her story but Valerie now seemed more interested in something David had said. The girl pestering him with questions about her brother as she nibbled on one of the skewers. For his part, David seemed willing to share details of his time with V, something that warmed Gloria's heart even as her mind screamed that something was wrong.
"She only recently met V too...Maybe she doesn't share her parents opinions? Maybe she genuinely wants to know about her brother?" Eleanor held up one of the plates to her, and she took a skewer, thanking the woman as conversations shifted away from her again. She took a bite, senses confused by the clash of zesty and sweet, but at the same time enjoying the combination.
"Well, what do you think Gloria?" She heard V address her, brain taking a moment to register what he was talking about.
"It's...different." She hummed, "but in a good way. David? Do you like it?"
"S'good." There were already two empty skewers on his plate, and he was reaching for a third.
"David, pace yourself." She lightly admonished him, making Robert chuckle.
"It's fine, Gloria." The old man gestured for David to keep eating. "My grandson is still growing. Plus, and I mean no offense, but I doubt he's ever had true fusion cuisine before now. Besides, Valerie's appetite is just as bad if not worse." Gloria followed his eyes to her potential sister-in-law's plate, also seeing two empty skewers and half a third missing. "Teenagers, am I right?"
"M'not that bad." The girl replied, finishing off her third skewer and making the adults laugh.
"Tell me mother, do you still limit the number of snacks allowed a week?" V smiled, finishing off his own skewer.
"She does." Valerie cut in before Eleanor could answer. "Did you know she only buys one bag of Moonchies a week?"
"What?" David looked at his grandmother. "Crime."
"I know, right?" The girl looked at David, before focusing on her. "I mean, I can understand limiting junk food if you can't afford it but-"
"Valerie." There was a slight warning in the tone of Robert's voice. "What did I tell you before we came here?"
"Sorry daddy." Damn, the girl actually sounded and looked apologetic. "That came out wrong."
"It's alright." Gloria reassured her. "It just makes little treats like that all the more special."
"Well said." Robert raised his glass in a small toast to her, and Gloria grimaced internally. Once again, she was saved by the timely arrival of their entrees. "And just like Moonchies, you're in for a real treat with those crepes. They're one of my preferred dishes when I come here."
Gloria looked down at her plate, seeing two egg crepes filled with Carolina seasoned pork and a crunchy coleslaw. There was also a small cup of what might have been teriyaki or barbecue sauce off to the side.
"Well, they look good." She reached for her fork and cut off a small piece of crepe and popped it in her mouth. The clash of cool and spicy with the savory of the crepe was a welcome experience. "Okay, I'll admit they are good."
"Everything here is good." Valerie replied, gesturing to her own plate which had some sort of arepa sandwich on it. "Vincent, you really should take Gloria out more."
"Well, I would but you know how busy I am." V smiled at his sister as he picked up a piece of sushi. "But that just makes moment when I can take Gloria out all the more special."
"Oh indeed." An almost uncanny smile took over Eleanor's face. "Even when Robert and I were younger, we didn't get to go out to restaurants all that often due to work. Why I still recall the first time he took me to La Lune Bleu."
"Oh how could I forget that night." Robert laughed, seeing the confused looks on the faces of the table's youngest occupants. "Poor girl got a case of scombroid poisoning from it."
"Scombroid?"
"A specific type of food poisoning caused by seafood." Gloria answered, having handled a couple cases in her time. "Usually caused by eating improperly stored fish."
"Oh indeed, but it was kind of worth it." Eleanor sipped at her wine. "Having Robert fussing over me the rest of the night and part of the next day as it ran its course."
"I had to make sure you were okay, my dear." Robert took her hand in his and gently kissed the back of it. Both Valerie and David rolled their eyes at the display of affection, while V simply continued to eat. Gloria meanwhile gave a polite nod and turned her attention back to her own meal. "After all, we all just want to take care of the ones we love, right?"
"Of course." V agreed with his father, arm moving to slip around Gloria's shoulders and pull her close. "That's part of why I put so much effort into making sure this one recovered."
While Gloria knew V was being sincere, she couldn't help but feel an odd hollowness in his words. Was it because his actions mirrored Robert's (just on a much larger scale)? Was it all part of his act? The little cloud of doubt she had been feeling all night started to expand as V continued to talk with his parents.
"Everything is going smoothly..." She was torn about if she should be thankful for that, or even more concerned that nothing had happened.
Yet.
"Gloria? Are you feeling okay?" She felt V's hand on her arm, the gesture making her flinch. Turning her head, she could see the genuine concern in V's eyes, yet his face didn't quite reflect it. No doubt a side effect of how he was supposed to be acting around his father. For a moment, she debating lying and saying yes. To make some excuse about the food being 'too spicy' or a malfunction with her systems.
She looked past V to David, seeing her son sharing his father's worries. Her eyes went across the table to Valerie, who was watching her with intense scrutiny. (God, was the girl jealous of her or something for how much attention V was paying to her?) For some reason, she looked at Eleanor, finding nothing but a level of polite concern. Lastly, she made the mistake of looking at Robert, whose stoic expression was a sharp enough contrast to everything else that she knew she'd be better off telling the truth.
She hoped.
"I'm sorry, but I can't do this." Gloria shook her head, feeling V's hand grip her arm gently. "I...I just can't help but feel that something is off about all this. I don't mean to be rude, but its been eighteen years since we've had any sort of contact Mister Linder. And you were right that we didn't part on the best of terms back then." With her free arm, she gestured to the restaurant. "And now that Vincent and I back together...You invite me and my son." She hoped that referring to David as just her kid didn't upset V too much. "Out to dinner out of the blue. Claiming that you want to get to know us? I-I'm sorry but nothing about this is sitting right with me."
"Now Gloria." She felt V lightly squeeze her arm as he pulled it down slightly, wordlessly telling her to stay seated. "I'm well aware of your history with my father, but he is trying to make amends." Out of sight of his father, she could see her lover's eyes flooding with concern and worry.
"Vincent, you are correct. But so is Gloria." Robert took a sip of his wine, suddenly looking like a villain in the old spy movies to her. "I will admit that the reason I approached you like this, is because I have changed perspectives with age." His eyes locked onto her's, and Gloria noticed they were closer to the hardened steel she remembered. "New information learned has lead me to realize my errors in the past."
"I don't believe you." She shook her head, feeling V's grip relax even as his hand remained.
"Hmm." The old man rubbed his chin. "Philosophically speaking; Do you know the difference between a teacher, a scholar, and a scientist?"
"Wha-" It seemed such a jarring subject change that Gloria's reply died on her lips.
"A teacher regurgitates facts that they are told to learn and pass on." The Bastard explained, speaking methodically, like someone giving a lesson. "A scholar breaks down and interprets what others learn, but never learns anything new themselves. Meanwhile scientists question everything in pursuit of fresh, new knowledge."
"So?" She frowned, not sure where he was going with this. She felt a small pat on her arm, the touch reassuring her that V approved of her question.
"Gloria, when we first crossed paths. I liked to think of myself as a scholar." A not-quite smug yet not humble smile moved onto his face. "Now, I want the mindset of a scientist. Do you know the most important skill for a scientist?"
The question seemed almost condescending, but Gloria knew she had to offer up some sort of answer. "Reasoning?"
"In a sense, yes. But it's actually the ability to say, and accept that they were wrong." He took a sip of water, as if to cleanse his mouth of the fact. "There is no point in testing a hypothesis if you never accept your ideas are wrong, and correct the mistakes."
"Oh really?" She wished V would move his hand, but knew it was grounding him as much as comforting her. "And just what hypotheses do you feel the need to correct? That street kids are no good for suits?"
While the shifting of V's hand to her leg, and the gasp of shock from Eleanor was expected. She didn't know what to expect from the Bastard. A bullet to the brain case? A sudden shut down of all but her life support system for the sheer disrespect she had been showing?
Instead, he laughed.
An odd mocking laugh complete with a slow clap.
Gloria didn't know if she should feel relieved. Or terrified.
"Oh, I forgot just how much of a little firebrand you were." For a moment the jovial grandfather figure turned sinister, with little warmth in the smile he was giving her. "Socially, you're right. Members of the upper class will look down on you for fraternizing with the lower classes outside of 'charity events'. But I am instead referring to something else." His attention shifted to David, who looked just as confused as she did. "Tell me David, what have your rippers had to say about that piece of chrome in your back?"
David's mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.
"Go on David, answer your grandfather." V prompted, one finger tapping her leg to say 'all part of the plan'.
"They said its a powerful piece. That I'd be liable to flatline if I used it too much and that even top of the line immunosuppresants wouldn't be able to help in the long run." David lowered his jacket and shifted his shirt so that Robert could see part of the implant.
"And yet, you're still here." His eyes narrowed slightly, "why is that?"
"Not sure to be honest." David took a sip of his tea, and Gloria knew he was stalling a little. "I mean, Doc said I was 'built different' but Vik chalked it up to having a high humanity score? I, don't really know how to explain it."
"Understandable." For a brief moment, the jovial grandfather was back as he praised David's explanation. "And you're right, a lesser man would be driven mad by such a powerful piece of chrome in his back. But you? You've shown a resistance...A tolerance. One that's borderline stronger than your father's. Where did that come from, I wonder?"
Once again, Robert's eyes were upon her, studying her with a scientist's scrutiny.
"Gloria, before your 'procedure'...Did you or anyone in your family have an amount of chrome equal to David?"
"Like you don't know." She fixed him with a hard gaze, knowing she couldn't lie. "Not really. Just your basic neuroports and EMP threading. I'm honestly the most chromed member of my family now."
"And how has that affected you?" Robert took another bite of his meal, acting both curious yet disinterested in her answer. "Any side effects? Lag? Dysphoria?"
"No. I mean, I'm still learning my limits and how to adjust a few things but-"
"Safe as full body conversions are nowadays, I'm sure they warned you of all the possible side effects. The minor ones like potential 'black outs' or 'system malfunctions' to the big ones like Cybernetic rejection syndrome." He mused, not caring that he interrupted her. "Even the healthiest of patients could suffer from these an-"
"Get to the point." Gloria glared, ignoring the warning squeeze to come from V.
"So impatient." He tutted, but conceded. "Anyways, I have a theory as to why you and David have adapted so well to your upgrades. One that I wish to test, but lack the means to."
"That's it?" For some reason, her mind flashed back to when Rogue was after her, David, and V's genetic data. Was that was the man was after? Did he know how Rogue's offer had worked and that's why he was doing all this? She never got an answer from the Queen of Fixers beyond 'wanting to confirm some history'. Curiosity overrode her better sense of judgment.
"And what exactly do you need for that?" The light tap against her leg told her V approved of the question, understanding he was just as in the dark as she was.
"I need more...Samples." His eyes looked to David, then back at her. Head tilting slightly, as if trying to decide the best way to explain what he meant. Gloria herself was confused, trying to figure out what he meant she looked to V, but his expression told her he was just as lost.
"What do you mean?" V asked the question she was afraid to.
"I simply wish for you and Gloria to provide me with more grandchildren." It was a simple request, but it sent such a chill down her spine that Gloria was certain her cooling units malfunctioned. "And for David to provide me with some great-grandchildren as well."
"Wha-why!?" If it wasn't for the fact they were in a public place, and Gloria had no idea who around them might be an ally of the Bastard's in disguise, she would have been out the door by now. She looked at V, who was sporting a neutral expression as he made some passive comment about wishing he had the chance to raise a kid of his own. Eleanor seemed enamored with the thought as well, while Valerie looked annoyed (and maybe a little grossed out at the thought).
Her attention shifted to David, who couldn't seem to decide if he should be red with embarrassment at the thought of having a kid of his own (never mind that he proposed to his girlfriend because he thought he was going to be a dad!). Or if he should turn green and die of disgust at the thought of his parents reproducing.
"Again, it's because I have a theory. Vincent's tolerance for cybernetics I understand. Yet David's resilience demonstrates that there is something in your genes that gives an unusually high tolerance to cyberware as well. Now, I'm not saying its a cure or preventative for conditions like Cyberpsychosis...But it is something I would like to study and observe."
"Absolutely not." Gloria stood, fighting the urge to grab David and run. "I don't want you slicing up my child or any future children I would have."
"Gloria." Once again, V's hand was on her arm, holding her gently in place. She felt him tug gently on her, telling her to sit, but she ignored him for the moment.
"Oh no, it's nothing like that my dear." The Bastard almost seemed to laugh. "All I'd be taking is a couple samples of their genetics and comparing them. Something that can be accomplished with simple blood test and cheek swabs. No need for any sort of big and invasive procedure."
"Uh huh." The old man's words did little to calm her. "And what would be in it for us?" she questioned.
"You and any future children you might have, would lead a life of luxury beyond what you're currently experiencing." He made a gesture that seemed to encompass everything around them. "Every whim or want granted in an instant, with no bills or consequences to worry about."
"And what about David? Would you extend the same 'courtesy' to him if he gives you a great-grandchild?" By the faint tensing of V's hand, Gloria knew she had mentioned something dangerous.
"Oh yes. I have all that and much more planned for my grandson." A devilish grin worked its way onto the Bastard's face as he looked at David. "David, did you know the Arasaka's have an heiress about your age? Not a direct heiress, but one of the branch lines."
"No?" Her son replied, looking at the man with confusion.
"They do. A sweet girl, if not a little sheltered." There was a fond smile on his face which while it might have comforted some, filled her with a sense of dread. "In exchange for everything I have offered your mother, you marry her and gain a further foothold in the Arasaka family by fathering an heir."
For a brief moment, Gloria saw a flash of temptation move across David's face. Yes, he was in a loving relationship – he just got engaged for Christ's sake! But he was still a teenager with teenage desires and The Bastard was tempting him with sex, wealth, and women. Fortunately, it seemed all of her and V's lessons weren't in vain as he shook his head.
"But I, uh...I'm-" He started, but couldn't seem to get the words out. He turned his head to meet her gaze, silently asking for his mother's help.
"No, just no." Gloria shook her head, crossing her arms as she sliced the air. The action throwing V's hand off her arm. "I won't be some broodmare housewife selling her son off-"
"That's a rather crass way to consider it." Once again, Robert was unfazed as he reached for his wine. "I thought it was a perfectly acceptable offer."
"No, it's really not!" Her hands clenched into fist, body shuddering slightly in suppressed anger. She looked over to David, who was looking at her with shock and surprise. He had never seen her angry, at least not truly.
"How so? I'm just requesting an even trade, even if not fully consensual." He held his hands out and brought them back in a half shrug. "You get a life with your child's father, with no worries in exchange for you growing your family. David gets to marry into wealth and luxury at the top of the corporate ladder." Robert shook his head, "I see nothing wrong with it."
"Of course you don't." She spat. "But what about our choices? Our desires? David is already in a relationship-"
She saw her son flinch, as if he just realized what the old man's offer meant.
"A dalliance." The Bastard's eyes briefly flicked toward Eleanor, and for a split second Gloria thought she saw the woman flinch. "But even if it lasts, there would be no issue with him having a mistress. Just so long as he sires a child with the Arasaka bloodline."
"You say that like you don't plan on giving him a choice." She growled, no longer caring if she was causing a scene.
"To be honest, I don't." Gloria did not like the implication the man gave by looking at V, then Eleanor before turning back to her. "If you do not accept the deal, I will force it to happen anyways. You simply trade the open hand for a gilded cage."
"Maybe I do, but not my son." She kept the thought to herself, instead. "David is an adult! You can't just force him into some marriage!"
"Oh but I can. And it's actually very simple to do so." The old man steepled his fingers before him. "All of his digital records will be edited, his date of birth adjusted to make the law see him as a child again. Oh, and any physical copies of said records will be disposed of. Meanwhile, you will be legally declared mentally incompetent and your rights as his mother will evaporate accordingly. Vincent will side with me, and I will be granted custody and guardianship of young David."
"You bastard." She glared, fists clenched so hard that her palms would probably be bleeding if she was still 'ganic.
"Indeed. Nonetheless, one way or another you will do as I wish." He gestured to her with his still steepled hands. "The only question left is how much you struggle, resist, and suffer along the way."
The smug confidence only served to infuriate her as she stared down the same man she had challenged eighteen years ago. She wanted to tell him to fuck off, but still had a few questions that she wanted answered.
"So why this farce? Why pretend to be family?"
"Pretend? My girl, you are family now." The way he said it did little to calm her, only serving to make her feel slightly ill. "You are the mother of my grandson, and have earned your place in this family. Even if you come to regret it, this fact will not change." That damn smile was back on his face. "As such, you are due certain levels of respect and care, and I will see to it that it is so."
"For fuck's sake... Can't you just be some corpo-rat evil overlord like the rest?" God, she really wanted to pull her hair out. Instead, she caught sight of V's hand shifting slightly towards her chair – Sit down. "Just skip the bullshit and act like the black-hearted bastard you are?"
"Oh that is amusing." He undid his hands, reaching for his wine as she reclaimed her seat. "Let me clarify something for you: You are not as important as you seem to think."
"What?" The admittance caught her off-guard, and she was thankful V had the foresight to have her sit.
"I find that everyone thinks of themselves as the main character of their story. They see life as how it relates to them." He hummed, a faux show of thinking as his smile didn't waver. "To compare it to a video game, you are the protagonist and I would be the final boss."
"And how is that amusing to you?"
"In my view, you and the rest of the family are side-quests. A wayward son that needed to be pulled back to the family-"
"He wouldn't have needed to be pulled back if you had just raised his right! Not kicked him to the curb because he didn't fit your needs." V might not care about how he was raised (it lead him to her after all), but having come from a loving and supportive home? And having given David the same? She felt the need to inform The Bastard of his failure in that department.
"I know, and maybe I was a little rash on that front. But we've since ironed out most of our differences, right son?" He tipped his head towards V, who raised his glass in a toast of agreement. "Not to mention, I've since realized that Vincent has or had some something else I desired."
"And what would that be?" Gloria didn't like the implication, but had to keep the pressure on the man.
"An impressive set of coding, or maybe its better to think of it as a piece artwork made of software." Gloria did not like the way he was looking at V. "One that he unfortunately lost or misplaced. Or maybe handed it off to his friends and forgot about it."
It might have been a trick of the light, but Gloria would swear she saw V's resolve waiver for just a moment. Idly, she wondered which of V's projects he was referring to. And just as quickly decided she didn't want to know.
"But like I was saying – you are just a side-quest in the game of my life. A daughter-in-law to coerce into consenting. A grandson to train up as a legacy and marry into a much grander lineage. All worthwhile efforts, and easy enough given time and effort."
"What's your point?" Gloria was growing tired of the Bastard's attitude.
"In any game, side-quests are largely irrelevant to the main goal. You can fail to succeed them without failing the overall game." He looked at the three of them. "They are there to waste time, to gain some side bonus, and give the player something to do as the real story progresses. Your branch of this family is much the same. A side project while my real goals progress and stew."
"Why?" It was the one question she wanted answered more than anything.
"For the little bonuses of course." There was no hint of humanity in the smile on The Bastard's face as he extended his arms out to the side. "My family restored. Access to the Arasaka line. And your children and grandchildren's genetic data will either confirm or deny my theories, and progress my plans either way."
"You bastard!" Consequences be damned, Gloria was back on her feet, staring the old man down again. "There's no way I will let any of that happen to my family."
For a brief moment, she saw a flash of pure fury move through The Bastard's eyes. But it seemed he was more than used to literal hostile negotiations as his response was to sigh.
"Vincent?"
"Yes sir?" She felt V's hand on the small of her back.
"It seems I might have glibly upset our guests." He seemed to be looking right through her. "Perhaps it would be best if we finished this dinner out another time, go our separate ways?"
"Of course." V's hand gently tugged on the back of her dress. Just go along with it. She saw his head turn towards David, who was just staring at the three of them. With his free hand, V rapidly tapped on the table a trio of times, the sound snapping David out of whatever trance he had fallen into.
"Problem with your hand, son?" Robert asked, having seen the gesture.
"My finger is malfunctioning. Itchy trigger finger, I guess." He flexed his hand, and Gloria could see his index finger trembling slightly. "Might need to have that adjusted."
"Say, is there any chance I can get a to-go box?" David asked, looking at his half-eaten dinner hopefully.
"Seriously?" Gloria softened her glare as she turned it on her son. Meanwhile Valerie's head hit the table in embarrassment at her nephew. Despite the situation, Eleanor hid a smile at her grandson, while V just shook his head.
"We can come back another time." V assured him, taking a moment to adjust his jacket. His actions seemed a little too aggressive, but Gloria wasn't about to comment as he took a moment to thank his father for inviting them, and to apologize.
"It's alright. I know its a lot to consider." The Bastard's expression was cold, but no longer seemed hostile as he looked at her. "Do take the time to think it over, alright?"
Gloria didn't dignify the request with a verbal response, choosing instead to give a quick nod as she started walking towards the exit. After a moment, she heard David and V join her, the three of them silent until they were outside the restaurant.
"Asking for a to-go box? Seriously?" V finally broke his 'filial son' character as the passed the building's threshold, sending a clearly disappointed frown at David.
"I was trying to be a good grandson. Make it seem like I felt bad that The Bastard's spending was going to go to waste?"
"Good idea in theory, bad idea in practice given that we were trying to get out of there." V sighed, hands moving to rub at his temple.
"I know. You looked ready to draw iron. And mom?" Gloria heard the surprise in her boy's voice, "I don't think I've ever seen you look so angry."
"How could I not be?" She growled, still not over her anger as she moved towards V's car. "He wants to use us as breeding stock!"
"Was it really... I mean, uh it really doesn't sound so bad?" Gloria almost tripped as she turned around to face her son. Heard the scuff of V's shoes as he stopped.
"The fuck did you just say!?"
"David Enrique Martinez!" Even after all these years, her son would still shy away in embarrassment whenever she used his full name. "You can not seriously be considering that bastard's offer!"
"I mean, it would get him off our backs. And would pay all of our bills. I wouldn't have to risk my life being an Edgerunner. And you could retire outright. Neither one of us would have to worry, we'd be set for life." David suddenly seemed a little sheepish. "And all you need to do is give me a couple siblings. And all I'd have to do is, have sex, with a member of the Arasaka family. Father a child and let him take just a little bit of blood from them. It really doesn't sound like a bad deal."
Gloria sighed. Of course from his side, it sounded like the deal of a lifetime. And maybe for him, it was. She couldn't argue that it meant safety for her boy; the one thing she always wanted for him over anything else. But deep down, she knew it would mean the cost of David's freedom. Oh sure, the Bastard made it sound like that's all David needed to do, but Gloria suspected there was more.
And judging by the exasperation on V's face, knew he knew it too.
"David, I understand where you're coming from on this." V started, one hand still held to his temple. "But I'm also going to say you have scop-for-brains if you think for one minute that there aren't over a dozen strings that you can't see attached to that offer."
"But-"
"David." Gloria brought out the mom tone, killing the argument he was about to make. "I want you to take a moment and think about this. Really think about it." She saw his head dip slightly. "Tell me, if you went to Lucy right now and told her that you want to call off your engagement because you want to marry another woman who you don't know, how would she react? On top of that, even if for whatever reasons she's 'okay with it'...How do you think she'd react to knowing that any children you have – be it with her or the mystery woman. Are going to be seen as little more than 'test subjects' by their great-grandfather?"
David seemed determined to have his head become one with his body he was sinking into his shoulders so much.
"She...wouldn't be happy." His eyes looked up to meet hers, but his head stayed low. "Wouldn't want our kids to be test subjects...Like she was."
"Doesn't sound as good a deal now, does it? Knowing that part of the true cost would be Lucy's happiness." It was a low blow, but David really needed his own taste of what the Bastard had put her and V through. "Can't believe I'm going to say this, but if you want sex with someone else besides Lucy? Just go hire a prostitute."
"Oh, not to mention. You might not even get to have sex with the woman." V added, a small smile on his face as David turned red and continued to impersonate a turtle. "Artificial insemination is a thing. You wouldn't even need to touch her. All the doctors would need would just be some of your-"
"I. Get. It." David's hands came up to cover his ears. It had been Gloria's plan to guilt-trip her son into disregarding the deal. But V's play of mortifying David also seemed to be working quite well. Not to mention, the humor she felt at the situation was doing wonders to dissipate her anger. "And you're right. When you put it like that? Eurgh."
"Not as good a deal now, right?" V asked, and David nodded as they climbed into V's Ragnar. "Didn't think so."
"Yeah. Nice as it sounds...I don't think it would be worth me losing Lucy." There was a fierceness in David's voice as he said that last part that made the romantic in Gloria sigh. She also saw the approval in V's expression as he started to drive back towards David's apartment. "Damn, is this how you feel about mom? Why you had no qualms coming to help her when I called?"
"It is. And it's why I'm willing to endure all of this bullshit." V turned a smile to her, and Gloria felt her heart melt. "Now, it's getting late...I think we should get you back to your place so you can update Lucy on the situation."
"Already told her I was on my way home, and gave her a heads up to be on guard." He sighed. "Figure I'll tell her the rest in person. Easier that way."
"Yeah." V nodded. "Given how close she is to you, which good move not mentioning your engagement. There's no doubt in my mind that The Bastard may try to get her to convince you to take the deal."
"Agreed." Gloria nodded. "Say V, did I ever tell you that he tried to pay me to break up with you and leave you alone all those years ago?"
"Knew it." V grumbled. "I had a feeling he was up to something back then, but didn't know what."
"Wait, The Bastard tried to pay you to leave dad?" David leaned forward, "how much did he offer?"
"Not enough, given that you're here." V tried to make light of the situation, but it still hurt her that The Bastard won in the end of their original game. She swore she was going to tell V everything the man had done tonight come hell or high water. "Actually, how much did he think I was worth?"
"Twenty-five thousand, then fifty after I refused the first offer."
"Damn, he valued me that little?" V pouted, while David looked shocked that she would turn down that much money when she was his age.
"Yeah, the scop-stain tried to low ball me." She placed a hand on his arm, smiling. "But I knew what I had...Wasn't going to let you go for anything less than a million eddies."
"Oh, so if Becca gives you a million eddies, you'll hand me over to her?" V teased, making her laugh as David groaned about how he had just eaten.
"Actually, think I know how to fix this shit show of an evening..." Gloria heard her son mutter, but paid him no mind as she started to count on her fingers.
"Maybe back in fifty-seven. However, adjusting for inflation...add the interest fees? Yeah, nope. Don't think anyone can afford you."
"Oh, so now I'm priceless?" V looked playfully offended, making her laugh.
"Just drop me off here...Think I'll walk home." David groaned.
"Oh no, you are not walking home young man." Gloria admonished him, "want to make sure my baby gets home safe."
"Alright then..." David sighed, and Gloria smiled at her apparent victory. Deciding to take a break from teasing her son, she settled for quietly enjoying V's company as they drove the last few miles to David's apartment.
"Do you want us to come up with you?" V asked as he brought the car to a stop outside David's building. "Help explain a couple things?"
"Thank you but no." David gave them a weary smile. "Don't take this the wrong way, but I need a break from family if that makes sense?"
"It does." Gloria smiled as David unbuckled his seat belt, leaning forward to give her an awkward hug.
"Just call if you need anything, alright?" V gave David a thumbs up as his son opened the door.
"Will do." He returned the gesture, still smiling. "Good night. Oh, and good luck."
Before either of them could comment, he closed the door and took off into the building.
"What does he mean 'good luck'?" V asked, looking at her in confusion.
"I don't know but...Hang on, why is Becca calling me?" Gloria frowned, answering the call. ["Hello?"]
["So what's this I hear about needing a million eddies to buy V off of you?"]
["Oh that little shit..."] Gloria said it both over the holo and aloud. She could hear Becca laughing, while V looked confused. "He told Becca..."
"Uh huh. Uh huh." V nodded, "excuse me a moment. I need to send a message."
"And just who are you messaging?" She asked, ending the call with Becca with the promise of explaining things to her tomorrow.
"His keeper." V's eyes lit up as he sent the message. "Told her how our son was thinking of whoring himself to Arasaka, and to ask him for the detes."
"Oooh, that's low." Gloria playfully smacked him, but knowing that David would most likely be honest with Lucy? "I approve."
"You don't think it might hurt their relationship?" V asked, looking slightly concerned as he started to drive them back to their place.
"It shouldn't." She replied, feeling confident in her answer. "It'll just force David to be fully open and honest with her about the situation. Which speaking of...I feel I need to finally tell you my side of what happened all those years ago." She saw the concern on V's face deepen, and saw he was about to protest. "No, I want...I need to get this off my chest. V, you've been honest with me recently about your past. Let me be honest with you, alright?"
Once again, he looked like he was going to protest. Instead, after a moment he sighed and nodded. One hand coming off the steering wheel in favor of resting on her leg.
"Alright." He gently caressed her thigh. "But we are so cuddling afterwards, and taking another relaxing day tomorrow."
"That's the best offer I've heard all night." She placed her hand over his in agreement, a content smile on her face as they returned home.
