Different Perspectives Chapter 5
Therin Lee, 14, District 2. Fifth Hunger Games
Not this again, I thought to myself as I headed to the Evans' residence on my paper round. Peleus is always training his nephew, as if he's training him for a career in the Hunger Games. Last year's Tributes, Oliver Shields and Ursula Lavene, returned home in a wooden box. If there's one thing I can't stand about the Evans' family, it's arrogance. Peleus Evans is a Peacekeeper, and his younger brother, Melenous, struts around the District. The other day, Peleus had a shouting match with a woman, Petunia Curl, after she called him out for making a "Ten-year-old kid undergo harsh Training methods". Petunia is the mother of Paris and Hestia Curl, a boy and girl who lived in the Stonemason area of 2. Her husband died during the war, killed by a piece of masonry in one of the battles. District 2 won't forget Strabo Plinth's betrayal any time soon, I thought bitterly as I headed back to confirm I finished the round. The Hunger Games will start soon.
Sitting at home, I watched as the Fifth Hunger Games was about to begin. Held in the same Arena the previous four was giving me deja vu, but this time there was something unusual: four empty podiums, and four Tributes nowhere in sight. The boy and girl from 10, boy from 11 and girl from 12. I remembered the girl from 10 being the younger sister to last year's Victor, while the boy from 11 was the brother of Flora Demaine, last year's female Tribute from District 11. Visible, on the screen, was Athena Hislop. She was standing between the small boy from 6 and the boy from 12. Lachlan looks very familiar, remembering the boy from 12 from last year's Games, the one that killed Oliver. As the alarm sounded I saw the boy from District 1 pick up a long sword and started to attack a small boy from District 8. A girl from District 11 collapsed, dying moments later. The boy from 1, Theobald, had cornered Athena. Within seconds all four of Athena's limbs were cut off, leaving the District 2 girl to die. Granit McKennie fled from the Weapons Pile at the sight of his decimated District Partner.
Granit would be killed on Day 2, killed by Theobald's long sword after Granit killed the girl from 1. Of course, Granit wouldn't be Theobald's last victim, as he would then kill a girl from District 7. On screen, I saw that the girl from District 3 had slitted the throat of the girl from 5 as Lachlan, the boy from 12, emerged. Angrily, he began addressing the Capitol for what they had done. Turning to the girl from 3, he muttered "Go ahead, what's the point? My twin brother's dead". I watched, horrified, as the girl plunged her knife into Lachlan's chest. "I'll see you soon", Lachlan muttered, a smile on his face.
District 2 mourned Athena and Granit, and time continued to pass. District 2 gained their first Victor in the 6th Hunger Games, in the form of Paris Curl. Neither Cynthia or Alastor returned from the Seventh Hunger Games alive; those Games was won by a girl from District 9, Chive Carmichael. The Eighth Hunger Games saw Acantha and Theseus return home in coffins, with a boy from District 6 winning.
The Ninth Hunger Games:
"Therin Lee!" I heard my name being called. This year is my last year. Beside me stood Hestia Curl. Amongst the boys in the crowd was Marcus Lance, who was a year younger than me. Ajax Hutcherson, amongst the 16-Year-Olds, and in the fifteen-year-olds was Achilles Evans, the young boy I remembered being trained by his uncle four years ago.
As the Countdown ticked closer, I thought about the four Tributes killed by masonry in the abandoned library. The alarm rang, and Hestia and I ran to the Weapons Pile. Grabbing a dagger, I plunged it into the heart of the District 4 boy. Hestia had slit the throat of a girl from District 11. A girl from District 3 was stabbing a girl from 7 to death. Now armed with a spear, I plunged the spear into the District 3's gut as a throwing knife entered the back of a boy from District 5. "Therin!" Hestia yelled, as thirteen Tributes ambushed her. Dashing back to the pile, I grabbed whatever I can to ward off the hoard of Tributes. It was chaotic, as things became a massive melee; all I know was that the girl from 8, boy from 9 and the boy from 6 were killed by me in the Melee at the Weapons Pile. Once the Melee ended, with the deaths of the girls from 5 and 9, I discovered that the only sword in the Pile was gone. In front of me I spotted the boy from 8, and gave chase. It took me a while to find, and once I did, stab him. The boy was badly injured in the Melee, and took the sword away. The girl from 4, Ondine, was eyeing in enviously, and as I made my way towards Hestia, a sharp pain went through me. Staring down, I saw that the tip of Ondine's trident had pierced me through my stomach, and as my vision faded, my last thought was "Win, Hestia" as everything went black.
So here's Therin's Chapter, and a bit of insight into District 2. There's a few cameos from future District 2 Tributes at the end, including what will become the first Career Tribute. Of course, this chapter isn't going to be the last District 2 Chapter. The Evans Family members are all named after figures associated with Peleus of Greek Mythology. I was going to post this chapter on AO3 but it's been attacked.
