This spell to break the link between Hayley and Sophie is rather simple. But, I did make a promise to Davina that I would teach her how to control her magic. Unbinding this link could be a good start for her. Besides, I would be knocking down two birds with one stone.
Mother's grimoire is perfect for this. No matter how much I despise my mother, she was a powerful witch, nonetheless. Even her unbinding spells were powerful, and she somehow managed to make untying a simple knot one of the hardest things to do. When I was younger, it was so hard to do this spell and it took months for me to learn. Davina is much more powerful than I was at her age. She should be able to learn it in a day.
Or, at least, I hope.
I make my way up to Davina's room, after a pretty quick conversation with the priest. I think I am growing on him. Once I get to Davina's room, I see her painting once again.
I knock on Davina's door, and she turns her attention away from another piece she was painting. Maybe Davina and Niklaus are more alike than they realize. Both are powerful, as well as fierce and they love art. Who knows, maybe in the future they will be friends.
Yeah...who am I kidding?
"I believe you were in need of a teacher?" I ask, as I hold up the knot that will untie the bond and a page out of my mother's grimoire.
Davina smiles widely at me, "Come in!"
I listen and walk into the room. Davina moves her drawing out of the way, as I put down the knot and paper on the table.
"What is this?" Davina questions.
"This is the key to getting you to control your magic. Or, at least a start." I explain, and Davina looks at me curiously. "This knot may not seem like much, but it requires a significant amount of power."
"To...untie a knot." Davina says skeptically and I nod. "And your mother created this knot?"
"Yes...and no. She created the spell, but not this knot. Someone else created this bind."
Davina then turns her attention to the knot, and takes it into her hands. "Who did it then?"
I look at Davina, deciding whether or not to tell her it was Sophie who casted the spell. I am not completely sure if I can trust her yet though, as we cannot have people find out about Hayley and the baby just yet. Especially Marcel, whose Davina's trust lies with.
"I am not completely sure. I know it was a witch from the quarter, though not sure who they linked themselves with." I lie. I want Davina to trust me, but I cannot tell her about this yet.
"Hm, well if it was made by the quarter witches, I am sure I can break the bond." She says with confidence, looking over the paper. I move away to give her some space.
"Don't get too cocky. Let's see what you got." I state and Davina nods. She focuses on the knot now, and places it back on the table. She then looks at the page I gave her, closes her eyes, and starts to recite the spell.
"Phasmotos Tribum, nas ex veras, uenes fes matos et somnos. Ex totum ex um maleo matos." Davina says, and I look at the knot.
It did not unknot, which means the link is still in place. Davina opens her eyes and sees the same thing. Her smile that she had before, dropped.
"That's not good, is it?" Davina asks and I shake my head no. Davina grunts in frustration, and I walk next to her to see the spell.
I take the paper and read over the spell in my head. "You said everything right...which worries me."
"Why?" Davina asks, and I place down the paper.
"Because that means you're not focused enough. You obviously have the power, but even with the spell in front of you, you still lack control." I explain.
"Well, aren't you supposed to be helping me with this then?"
"Yes, I am. Just figured you would have some sense of control..." I say at the corner of my mouth and watch Davina face become aggravated. "Alright, let's start off with something simple."
I look around the room and spot a candle. I grab the candle and bring on to the table. "Light it."
Davina looks at me curiously, but I continue to look at her with a serious face. She then turns around to face the candle again. "Phasmotos incendia."
Th candle quickly becomes lit, and Davina looks at me cockily. "I am not that much of an amateur."
I look at Davina for a moment, then put out the flame with a snap of my fingers. Davina looks at the candle go out, then looks at me in confusion.
"What was the point of that?" Davina questions, and I turn my attention to her.
"Any witch who knows a few spells can light a candle with the incantations. I want you to light the candle, without saying a word."
"Like, from my mind?" Davina asks, and I nod my head. "Okay."
She looks at the candle with the same confidence she had before and channels her magic. I watch as she tries to light the candle, but nothing happens. I watch over her stance, and I can feel the magic she is conjuring. But the candle will still not light up, and I can see Davina becoming irritated.
Instead, a huge gust of wind starts to flow around the room. Davina starts to lose control. All the magic she is controlling, is focusing more on Davina's frustration, than the task at hand.
"Davina!" I scream. She looks up to me and notices my hair being blown. Then finally notices the wind flowing around the room and tries to calm herself down. The wind calms down, and the breeze goes away in a matter of a few seconds.
"I don't get it. Why can I not light up a stupid candle, but I was able to throw an original out of a window." Davina complains.
"Well may-"
"And don't say because I was angry, because I am plenty angry right now." Davina cuts me off, in frustration. I can clearly notice that.
And to be completely honest, I am not sure why she lacks this control. I may be a powerful witch, but I am no where near a good teacher. I am just as stumped as she is.
"Look, it's only been a few minutes. Let's just continue to practice and you will get the hang of it eventually." I try to comfort her.
Davina places her hands on her hips, looking at the candle then looking back at me. "If I can't light a simple candle, how am I going to undo a powerful linking spell like this?"
That's a very good question.
"We'll figure it out. But come on, let's keep trying." I take a seat, and let Davina continue to practice.
Looks like this will take longer than I would have hoped. Worst comes to worst, I'll take control over doing the spell, and have Davina practice another hard spell. Because no matter what, I have to protect Hayley and the baby.
We need to break this link.
...
Five hours.
We've been at this for five...bloody...hours.
Davina has made little to no progress and I am just about at my wits end.
Davina has managed to throw items, light some furniture on fire, break vases and draws, and yet cannot find the strength to light a candle. Times like this, I miss Bonnie. She was reckless, like her friends, but at least she had some sense of control.
"This is not working." Davina says annoyed, and I get up from my seat.
"You almost smashed my head with a vase earlier; I've noticed." I say irritated and can see the embarrassment appear on Davina's face. I walk over to Davina and look at the candle. "You're not focused."
"I have not taken my eyes off the candle; what do you mean I'm not focused?" Davina asks confused.
"You may think that you are, but you're not. Something is stopping you from lighting this candle." I explain, and Davina raises her eyebrows at me. "It obviously is not the physical aspect, so it has to be mentally."
My phone starts to ring, but I see Davina face change. She may have realized that it is something inside of her that is stopping her from completing this spell.
"Excuse me, I need to talk this. But think it over." I state, and Davina nods with a solemn look. I walk out of the room and go towards the stairway so Davina can't hear me.
"What is it, Elijah?"
"We need to break that bond, now." Elijah demands, and I start to get a little worried by the eagerness in his voice.
"Why, what happened?"
"A witch injected something into Sophie Devereaux to kill the baby." Elijah explains, and I feel my blood starting to boil.
"Who?" I question with an angry voice. I am getting irritated with these witches trying to kill my niece.
"A woman named Agnes."
"And who the hell is Agnes?" I question. That name sounds familiar, but I cannot remember why.
"Someone who believes that this child will bring hell to earth and destroy the witches." Elijah says, and it starts to click. Agnes is the witch who sent those hunters after Hayley. "So, I need you to break the link."
Ha...well, this is a dilemma.
"Um...I sort of can't."
"Why is that?" Elijah asks, and I look up towards Davina's room.
"I told Davina to undo the spell, as it was a form of practice to get her to control her magic. If I undo it instead, she will wonder why, and I have a good feeling that it would not be wise for Davina to know about this child just yet." I explain and hear the sigh over the phone.
"Fine. Then how is she coming with it?" Elijah questions and I try to think of a best way to say she is doing worst than I imagined.
"Well...um...she hasn't hurt anyone...yet." I say with a short-felt laugh, but I can feel Elijah's tension over the phone.
"Kalle."
"I know, I know." I sigh, knowing I have to try even harder with her. "I'll figure something out."
Elijah then hangs up the phone, and I become more stressed out. Maybe it was not a good idea to let Davina be in control of breaking this bond, but I seriously did not think she would be having this much trouble.
I walk back up to Davina's room, but she is not doing the spell anymore. She is just sitting down, staring at the candle.
"You stopped." I state.
"I'm thinking." Davina corrects. "I am the strongest witch in the quarter, and yet, I don't have the strength to light a candle. How do you do it so effortlessly?"
Davina looks up at me hopelessly, and I walk into the room towards where she is seated. "If you are asking how I effortlessly do my magic, I can't really tell you. I've been doing magic for centuries that lighting a candle does not even seem like a spell to me."
Davina nods, then looks away defeated. "They were right." Davina mutters under her breath, and I look at her curiously.
"Who was right?"
"The elders." Davina states, still looking away from me. "They said I lacked the control, and that I was a strong girl, but it meant nothing if I did not know how to control my magic. They made that clear to me many times...especially Agnes."
My eyes widen at her. Agnes, the woman after Hayley, she's an elder. Why would an elder trust some weird story about a baby bringing harm to the witches. She should be wiser than that.
"I give up." Davina finally spits out and gets up from her seat. She walks over to the table and grabs the knot, as well as the paper. "I don't deserve this power; I don't deserve these spells. Thank you for trying, but it's no use."
Davina walks back to me, and hands me the knot and paper back. "Maybe this is a sign that I should be a normal girl, not a witch."
I look at Davina with sympathy. This is the first time I've seen her actually giving up. I should be thrilled, as I won't have to teach her anymore and I can unbind this spell on Hayley. But I'm not.
No matter how hard it is to teach her, it is actually nice spending some time with someone who is a fellow witch who despises the other witches. As well as being away from my family for a little while. I don't know, I am just not ready to give up on her just yet.
"Davina, don't quit just yet. We're not done." I state, giving the items back to her and she looks at me irritated.
"We have been trying for hours and nothing has changed." Davina says, as she placed the knot and spell back on the table. "I don't want to waste any more time with this."
"Look, I understand your frustration. It must be hard having all this power, and not being able to control it. And all though none of this was planned, it happened. And you need to accept that you are not-"
An idea then suddenly pops into my head, and I stop talking. I look away from Davina for a moment to clear my thoughts and you think this out.
"What? I'm not what?" Davina questions, and a lightbulb just went off. I think...I think I realized the problem.
"You're not a normal witch." I say in realization, as I look back at her. I can't believe it took me this long to figure it all out.
"Yeah, I already know that."
"No, that's the reason why you can't do this. That's the reason why you lack the focus. Because you don't want to be like this; you want to be normal." I state, and Davina looks at me in confusion.
"I'm not understanding."
"Do you remember what you told my brother and I?" I ask, and she shakes her head no. "You said you wanted to be normal. That you didn't want your powers. That is why you can't control your magic. It's because you won't accept it."
By the look on Davina's face, it seems like she understands what I was getting at before. This whole lack of control has been because her whole body and soul is not with being a witch.
"Listen, you asked how I do my spells so effortlessly. Despite me being a thousand years old, I have always been connected to my magic. Since I was a little girl, I have shared a connection with my magic." I then motion for her to look at the table, "To gain control, you need to connect with your magic."
I feel a vibrate and check my phone again. It's a text from Elijah.
Elijah: We need them unliked now.
"Okay, so connect with my magic when lighting the candle."
"Actually!" I move the candle away and put the knot in front of her. "How about you try the unlinking spell."
Davina looks at me with her eyes widen. "Are you sure? You said we should start off simple."
"That was before I knew what was wrong. I have faith that you can do this." And I know that we are running out of time. Davina looks at me unsure, and I smile at her. "I trust you."
Davina nods her head at me, and then looks back at the table. She takes the knot into her hand and closes her eyes. She takes a deep breath, then another, and then another.
"Phasmotos Tribum...nas ex...veras, uenes fes matos...et somnos." Her grip on the knot looses, and she holds it be the ends. "Ex totum...ex um maleo...matos." Davina opens her eyes, and I smile at the knot.
She lets go of it, and it starts unknotting in the air. It takes a few seconds, until the knot is fully undone. Davina smiles widely, then looks at me with the same smile.
"I did it!" Davina says happily, and I smile at her.
"I never doubted you." I state with a smile, which is sort of a lie. I did have my doubts in the beginning but once I figured out the problem, one hundred percent trust.
"Wait." Davina says, and I see she is looking at the candle. She closes her eyes for a few seconds, motioning for the candle to light up with her hands. Then, I see a little flame. Davina opens her eyes, to see the flame as well.
"Seems like you are gaining control." I state impressed, and Davina smiles widely.
"Yeah, maybe even gaining more power than you." Davina states cockily and I roll my eyes at her.
"Please, there are still way tricker spells out there that require way more control and strength. This was just the beginning." I state, and Davina nods happily.
I then get a call and see it's from Elijah. "Hello?"
"I see you were successful with the unlinking spell. Or should I say Davina."
"Did you ever doubt my teaching skills?"
"I will be honest and say I didn't have complete faith in you." Elijah states, and I roll my eyes.
"Is that all you called for?" I question, annoyed.
"No. I called because I need a favor. I made a promise that I would not let Agnes be killed by Niklaus and I intend to keep my promise."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"I need to...dry up right now, so until I can stop him, I need you to stall." Elijah asks.
I am confused for two reasons. One being why would Elijah promise to keep this witch who threatened our family alive. Two being why I have to be the one to stop Niklaus. But it's been a long day. So instead, I ask, "Where is he?"
"Nik!" I scream. My brother turns around to face me, looking irritated.
In his arm, he is holding a dark-skinned woman. I look away for a moment at everything else going on. There are three men sitting down in the pew chairs, all having scared looked on their faces. The priest is stood behind Nik, looking more angry than scared. Which does not really surprise me. I assumed the father knew about the supernatural, considering an all-powerful witch lives in his attic.
I then place my attention back on Nik and look at the women's face. She looks terrified for her life. "I assume this is Agnes?"
"Doesn't matter who she is, as she will be dead in a matter of seconds." Nik says with a smirk.
"Well, I was told, very specifically, by our older brother, to stop you from killing Agnes." I walk closer to them, even as Nik's glare starts to grow.
"Why would Elijah want that?"
"I don't know, because of a promise or something?" I say uninterested. "I honestly could care less but he told me to stall...and I actually have some questions for her."
Agnes finally locks eye contact with me, and I see her eyes widen. Not as if she was afraid of me, more like she was shocked to see me.
"Alright." Nik states, and I look at him curiously. I figured he saw the same look on Agnes. "Talk, but I am not letting go."
"You..." Agnes states in a low voice, and I tilt my head.
"Cannot say you're the first person to react that way when seeing me." I take a few steps further, "But, I have to say those other times I actually knew the person. I have never met you before in my life."
"Well, I know all about you." She says harshly, and I look at her with a quick grin.
Nik laughs, and he looks at me. "Seems like you have a fan, sister."
"Seems so." I look at Agnes with interest. "Please, continue."
Agnes shakes her head with a smile, "You know, I read stories about you. The original no one ever sees or hears about because your history got so lost over the centuries, that some people forgot you even existed."
"Eh, I like it that way. Makes it more interesting when people try to kill my family without knowing the history."
"But I know mine. I know what you have done, truly done. Who you are and have been become. The secret demons lurking inside of you." I start to get even more intrigued.
"Secret demons? I may have committed some sins... but nothing to that caliber." I cross my arms with an amused look.
"Really? Not even September 18, 1907?"
I squint my eyes at her. "I'm sorry, and that date is...?"
"The night you were daggered..." Niklaus states. I look at him confused. He looks sure of the fact, and I cannot exactly recall the date I was daggered. I was held up in a prison for five years, so the days kind of went by. So, I believe his word.
I then turn my attentions back to Agnes, still not fazed. "So, you know the date I was daggered. What about that screams inner demons to you?"
"I was not talking about that." Agne explains, and I raise my eyebrows at her. Still not having a clue of what she is talking about. "Ignore it all you want, but I know the truth. The so called 'good sibling', out of a bad butch of blood sucking vampires. The sole witch left in the original family. The immortal witch..." Agnes pauses. "Well, that part is not so true anymore."
My smile finally drops, and I start to get serious.
"What is she talking about?" Nik asks, but my focus is on Agnes, and I ignore him. I had a question for her before I came here. When Davina told me she was an elder, I had a sneaking suspicion about something. Now...I know my suspicion is right.
"I should have known...you are an elder after all." I scoff.
"Known what?" Niklaus asks eager, and I focus my attention of Agnes.
"You've been in contact with Ester." I acknowledge, and Agnes raise her eyebrows at me with a small grin. That's bloody great. There is a whole lot of things Ester could tell this lady, and none of it is good for our family. Or for me.
The doors then push open, and Elijah enters angered. The attention all turns to him, while I continue to glare at Agnes.
"Niklaus, release her." Elijah demands. "I gave my word."
"You are giving your word at the most inappropriate time, bother. We've been doing things your way all day. Just one little snap...you know she deserves it." Nik bargains. I turn my attention to Elijah, who looks extremely pissed off.
He walks up to Nik, "You have asked for my forgiveness. I will grant you that forgiveness...but do not make me break, my word." Elijah says in a strong manner tone.
I watch a stare down go on between the two, and despite Nik holding Agnes by the throat, it seems Elijah has the power in this situation.
Niklaus slowly starts to let go of Agnes and walks away backwards towards me, with his hands up in the air. "There. How's that for growth?" I roll my eyes. "Why must you always ruin the fun Elijah."
Elijah looks at Nik and I, then looks back at Agnes with the same devilish glare. "Oh, not necessarily."
Before I even realize, Elijah pulls the hearts out of the men sitting in the pews. He even throws one man up into the ceiling and if I am going to be honest, I am a little scared. When Niklaus gets like this, it is normal. He does this every day without a second glance, and he is pretty much predictable at this point. But Elijah? He thinks things through. When he does drastic things like this, I never know what to expect from his next.
"No one..."Elijah grabs Agnes by the throat. He must know the drastic consequences that will come of this.
"Goes after my family..." Killing the witches... the last living elder of the quarter. He only gets this hasty during two circumstances: someone breaks his trust... or someone hurts someone he loves.
"And lives." He then breaks Agnes's neck and drops her body.
I walk home by myself. Nik needed to speak to Marcel and Elijah needed some air, which I do not disagree on. I am just ready to lay down and rest. Training a seemingly uncontrollable witch, as well as getting in the way of my brother's bloodshed, took a lot out of me. But there is one thing that has been bothering for the past few minutes.
Agnes's words. When she spoke about the night I was daggered, she said something else happened. I was shrugging it off before because how would she know what happened to me a century ago? But after I realized she has been in contact with my mother, I knew there was something more.
But it makes no sense. I remember escaping my Mikeal's custody, then running in the woods, very weakly with no magic. And then I passed out. When I woke up, Elijah was there, and he carried me back to Nikalus. Then I was daggered. Nothing happened before and nothing definitely happened after. So, what during that night is Agnes talking abo-
...
The door is open. I hurry up into the house to see that everything seems in check, but something if off. I don't sense a werewolf. I would, under certain circumstances, consider it a fluke. But something I can always sense with no problem, is blood. And I cannot feel my niece.
I immediately take out my phone and start to call my sister.
"Hey Kalle, I actually needed to talk to-"
"Is Hayley with you?" I question urgently, shifting nervously.
Rebekah stays silent for a few seconds. All I need is a simple yes. They went out for a simple drive, and I am just being a tad paranoid. Because I know that there is no way we went through all this trouble just so she could get herself kidnapped. There is just no way.
"No. Why?" Rebekah states.
Shit.
