Journey of the Sword Hero

Chapter 5

Finding a Path

Melromarc – West of Castletown

After Shirou dealt with Connor's body, and after giving his stolen valuables to Lenora, the two moved on to put even more distance between them and the city. The walk was quiet as neither of them really knew what to say to each other after their previous experience. With Shirou's vision, it was easy to either avoid or quickly take down the low-level monsters along the way.

Shirou eventually breaks the ice out of concern for Lenora's wellbeing. "So, Lenora, have you been on your own for long?"

Lenora does not respond for a moment but eventually replies "A few months."

"What happened to your family?" Shirou wonders.

"The waves took them." Lenora did not clarify any further.

"I see… And how have you got by so far?" Shirou asks.

"By scavenging and stealing." Is Lenora's blunt response.

"I hope the people you stole from could afford to lose it at least?" Shirou softly scolds.

"I… don't know actually." Lenora sheepishly admits.

"You didn't even think about it did you?" Shirou admonished.

"Well… they didn't look poor at the very least. I never took anything expensive. Just food and water mostly. No one got hurt." Lenora defends herself.

"As far as you are aware." Shirou called out. "Look, I'm not trying to judge you harshly. Based on what I've heard, this country does not treat your people kindly. All I'm trying to do, is ask you to be cautious of your actions and to be aware of their effects on others. If you must do something bad, try to compensate for it with good."

"I… will try to keep that in mind." Lenora agrees to try.

"That's all I'm asking. If I have a say in it then you will never be in a situation where you have to do something like that again." Shirou declares.

"Why do you think that?"

"Because I'm going to help you get back on your feet."

"But why? I'm just some "beast" with nowhere to go. I have no money, no friends, no family. What do you get out of it?" Lenora thinks this is too good to be true.

"Nothing" Shirou answers "But ask yourself this. Is it wrong to help someone in need?"

"Well… no. But I don't think a lot of people will think the same way." Lenora is still in disbelief.

"Then is it not all the more important that we try to do so? Be the helping hand somebody needs? I am helping you because I can. That is all there really is to it." Shirou reassures her.

Lenora is silent for a moment but then quietly says "I wish you had come by sooner."

"I am sorry, but I didn't even exist in this world until yesterday." Shirou apologizes.

"Then is true? You really ARE the Sword Hero?" Lenora hopes she didn't follow a fake.

"How about a demonstration? Please hold out one of your knives" Shirou asks.

With a little hesitation, Lenora holds out one of Connor's knives pointed towards Shirou. Shirou holds his Legendary Sword next to her knife and a flash of blue light is emitted from the gem embedded in it.

*Hunting Knife Sword Form Unlocked*

'A knife sword is a little odd of a name but I can't really judge too harshly considering a sharpened rock the size of a person somehow counts as a blade. A knife is basically just a really short sword. It's like the difference between a Tanto and Wakizashi.'

Shirou shifts his sword into an almost perfect copy of Lenora's knife. The only real difference being the always present sapphire gem embedded within the hilt.

"So, it is real" Lenora says to herself "Do you know if the Shield Hero has been called yet? She asks Shirou with a hopeful tone.

"He was actually summoned with me and the other two heroes yesterday." Shirou confirms.

"All of them? But why here?" Lenora has never heard of the heroes being called all at the same time and place.

"I don't know" Shirou admits. "I am just as in the dark as you are about why. All I know is something unusual is going on in Melromarc but we are not in a position to investigate right now. For now, we need to lay low for a few days at least."

"Where are we going anyways? How far are we going to walk?" Lenora is worried about how far they have traveled into the wilderness.

Shirou checks the map he purchased in town "About another thirty minutes then we can stop for the night. We should reach the river by then."

"Why are we going to the river?" Lenora wonders.

"Rivers will provide a lot of our needs while we stay out here. We will have access to drinking water, fish for food, and most importantly… you can take a bath." Shirou lightly teases.

Lenora takes a moment to smell herself, her face forms a small grimace and then red colors her cheeks "I… would like that. But I don't have any clothes to change into. A bath won't do me much good."

Shirou tries to reassure her "Don't worry about it. I can make you something to use until we can get you something proper. Do you have a favorite color? Do you like dresses and skirts or do you prefer pants and a shirt?"

Lenora thinks for a moment before replying "I like skirts but nothing too long. I need to be able to run in it. I like the colors white, black, and gold."

"I think I can make something you might be used to. You can try it out tonight." Shirou informs.

The rest of the walk is uneventful. By the time they reach the river, it is already dark outside. Luckily for them, neither has problems seeing in the dark. Lenora's beast heritage helps her for once and Shirou applies reinforcement to his eyes to magnify light reflection.

*Night Vision Skill Acquired*

'Another SP version of a magic skill I have. I guess these might be safer or more efficient to use.'

Shirou turns to Lenora "We will camp here for a few days. I have some things I need to test out and we can start teaching you how to shoot tomorrow. I will start setting up camp while you take a bath. Before you go, please take this."

Shirou holds out his hands and calls out his aria for something he does not usually trace. Cyan light projects from his hands and then slowly takes the shape of a dress with puffed shoulders, long flowing sleeves, and a knee-high skirt. Modern society would call it a "peasant" dress but it is probably just called a simple dress around here. He also projects some boots sturdy enough to walk on uneven terrain. A potentially odd combination but Shirou was never one to care to much about fashion anyways. He also gives her a towel and washcloth.

Lenora's eye's go wide at the light show before settling on the gold dress "This is for me?" She takes the dress and feels the soft fabric.

"I will warn you that the dress is not "real". It's made of magic and will fade away in about a day. A hard enough hit can also cause it to dispel early. I will make you something new every day until we can get you something more permanent." Shirou explains the basics of a projected object.

"Do you want me to stay close by while you wash up? Or would that make you too uncomfortable?" Shirou offers.

"I'm not a child." Lenora huffs with annoyance.

"No, you're not. But is it wrong for me to worry about a girl alone in the woods at night? I won't be too far away. If you need anything just shout and I will come running." Shirou promises.

Slightly mollified, Lenora takes the dress, boots, towel and a washcloth to the river to make herself clean for the first time in a while.

Shirou starts by clearing the camping spot. He cuts and flattens the ground and digs a small fire pit with a ring of stones. Some stray clippings of grass brush past his sword during the process.

*Leaf Sword Form Unlocked*

*Ability: Absorption 1*

"Even common items can unlock sword forms? How many variations do you have?" Shirou says out loud.

"The legendary Weapons are designed with limitless potential."

"A tree list of potential sword forms and their unlock requirements can be seen in the weapon status screen."

"You are encouraged to allow me to absorb as many different materials and items as possible."

Shirou teases Vivian "Sound to me like you are just eager to gobble up anything you can get your blade on."

"It is only logical. The more forms I have. The more ways I can assist you."

"You will never need any other tool or weapon but me."

As Shirou is reminded of his sword's needy nature, he proceeds to set up the tent, which is thankfully big enough to accommodate both him and Lenora. He only has one sleeping bag but he can just project some extra pillows and a blanket for now.

Shirou takes some time afterwards to browse his sword tree menu and sees an extensive list of potential sword forms. 'Some forms make sense. Stone sword, wood sword, iron sword, steel sword. But some are strange. Butterfly sword, rope sword, medicine sword, and egg sword? What kind of swords were those supposed to be?'

Shirou realizes he can project quite a few of these items required to unlock some sword forms. He quickly unlocks the rope, fishing, pick, shovel, stone cutting, and pipe sword forms. He hopes to try them out on some basic monsters with Lenora tomorrow.

Lenora comes back fully cleaned and with her new temporary clothes on. Her hair however is still wet.

"Come sit by the pit with me. I will start a fire and make us some tea." Shirou calls to her and projects a couple pillows to sit on. "Don't we need to get wood first?" She asks.

"Not for this kind of fire. Just watch." Shirou activates the fire rune he etched on a stone in the center of the pit. The rock is covered in bright warm flames but no smoke is produced.

Lenora sits down and stares at the fire in curiosity. "You have magic rocks?"

"It's more like I made a rock magical. If you have the ability, I might be able to show you how later on but we have more basic things to learn first." Shirou answers.

Shirou pulls out one of his rations from his sword inventory "I'm afraid we don't have fresh ingredients or proper cooking equipment right now otherwise I would cook you something better. These should suffice until we can hunt or fish some real food."

Lenora is curious "You know how to cook?" She considers it an odd skill for a boy.

"I have had to cook for most of my life. Neither my father or guardian were any good at it." Shirou answers.

"What about your mom?" Lenora asks. "I never knew her." He informs her.

"Never?" Lenora asks more about her. "Never. I lost any memories of my birth family when I was seven. I was rescued by my adopted father after a catastrophe killed a lot of people where I lived. He raised me for five more years until died from health complications caused by that same event. My guardian took care of me after that until… she died when I was seventeen. I've been mostly on my own for about 6 years now. At least I managed to make a few friends during that time… People I may never see again." Shirou talks a little about his life from before this world.

Lenora takes a moment to think about how the man in front of her was orphaned three times over and now is alone again. Despite all this, he chose to help a runt like her. She decides that telling him a little about herself is the least she can do "I grew up near the Village of Lurolona, the Demi Human village. That village you were nice enough to offer to take me too? I should inform you that it does not exist anymore. It was one of the few safe places for us Demi-humans in Melromarc but, when the waves came, many lords delayed sending soldiers to help. After our protectors died THEN the other lords came in to pick up the pieces. A lot of our people died and the survivors either were captured or scattered afterwards. I have managed to escape capture or worse since then. Others were not so lucky."

"Has there been any word on rebuilding your village?" Shirou asks.

"Who would care? The Village was established under Queen Mirellia. With her gone, neither the King and most of the other Lords seem to care. I hear the other lords or bandits have taken as many of us demi-humans as they could get their hands on. It was not to offer us support."

Shirou places a hand on her shoulder in comfort "Lenora, I can't say how long it will take. But I promise, somehow, someway, we will help your people. The waves are a threat to everyone right now but afterwards, at least after the first wave, we will do what we can."

Lenora searches his face for any signs of dishonesty but no matter how she tries, she cannot find any hint of it. "I want to help. I got nothing to lose right now. If you wanted a slave I would already be in chains. I may not know how to fight but I'm fast when I'm not starving and these eyes and ears are not just for show. Our people are strong."

"You are placing a lot of trust in someone you just met" Shirou points out. "Everyone is a stranger to me here. You are the first person I've seen here actually helping." She states.

Shirou tries to dissuade her "You know that it will be dangerous?" "So is living anywhere in this country right now." Lenora fires back.

"We will be on the road a lot; you will be giving up the comfort of a home" he says. "I will never have a home to return to if the waves are not stopped." Lenora presses onwards.

"We will probably have to kill people too. Are you prepared to bloody your hands as well? Once you start, there is no going back. It becomes too easy afterwards." Shirou gives his last warning.

This at least makes Lenora pause for a moment to think. She eventually responds "Yes. I'm tired of being helpless. Besides, didn't you say that if you have to do something bad then you should also do some good to compensate? I will do what we have to, whatever may come." She shows herself to be resolute.

Shirou sighs before giving up "Alright. Just remember this conversation later. YOU chose this. But you will not be alone in your efforts. We will fight together."

Lenora gives him a beaming smile. She finally feels like her life might be worth something now. "We are partners now. We look out for each other."

Shirou holds out his hand to shake, which she quickly grabs. "Well partner, I think its time to go to bed. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow."

"But I'm not tired yet." Lenora complains. Shirou's eyes flash gold for a moment "Yes you are, your just too excited to notice right now. Come to bed. If you thought your dress was soft. Wait until you see what I did with the inside of the tent."

Lenora's curiosity wins and she purrs with contentment once she lays down on the soft pillows and blanket inside the tent. Shirou gives her a small smile from his side of the tent, happy that he was able to make her feel better.

For the first time in a while, Lenora has a pleasant night's rest.

West Melromarc – 3 Days Later

"AH" Shirou was cooking a morning breakfast when he heard a cry of surprise from the edge of camp.

When he turned around to look, he was met with the sight of Lenora on the ground and shakenly holding her bow. Directly across from her was a lone wolf that seemingly ignored her as it walked around the camp.

"You know it won't hurt you. It can't even see you right now. It knows something is odd but it will not cross the circle around the camp." Shirou reassures Lenora.

Lenora gave a huff of frustration before she replies "I know that but… this still will take some getting used to. It's not like I can tell if we are invisible or not."

Shirou took the time to place a simple "notice me not" bounded field around their campsite. The field would not stop someone from specifically looking for them but it would make anyone else passing by not want to cross over the field or notice anything inside of it.

Lenora readies an arrow as she takes aim at the wolf, Shirou calls out to her "If you want to take that shot then aim carefully. You may be at close range but if its not a kill shot then that wolf will know you're there and will attack you."

Shirou stands up and walks over to Lenora and makes some minor adjustments to her stance as he gives advice "Keep calm and remember the movements, your target is unaware of you, there is no need for a rapid response. Your shortbow lacks enough penetrating power to pierce its skull so the killing zones are the eyes leading to the brain or the heart below the neck and behind the top of its forelegs. A neck shot will kill it but not fast enough that it couldn't try to fight back so prepare for a snapshot if you miss."

Lenora aims slightly lower than the front center of the wolf's chest and sets loose an arrow. The arrow lodges itself in the wolf's chest and the wolf gives a cry of pain. "Lung shot, shoot again" Shirou calls out.

The wolf suddenly sees the source of its pain and attempts to run at her. Lenora's shaky fingers cause the second shot to go wide and hit one of the wolf's legs instead. The wolf stumbles into the ground. "It's down now, finish the job." Shirou continues to direct her.

Lenora's last shot finally hits the heart and the wolf quickly stops dead.

"Good job" Shirou congratulates her.

"I missed, twice." Lenora seems frustrated of her lack of progress.

Shirou pats her on the head and says "You are still learning, a lung shot will still cripple most enemies and a mobility kill to the legs is as good as a death sentence in an active battle. You did good despite just a few days of training, be proud of that."

Lenora gives him a small smile at that "Yeah. I DID kill a wolf all by myself and I leveled up!" She proudly states.

Shirou gives a smile back "That you did. We both leveled up. Wolves are a little scarier than balloons and rabbits, right? Now, are you ready to help me skin and clean it?"

Lenora's happy face shifts to a grimace. "Eh, do I really have too?" Lenora tries to avoid the task.

"Part of the job I'm afraid. If you are going to kill something, then you better take care of it until the end. Animals get every part of them used as much as possible. As for people… well, giving them a proper burial is the least we can do for them."

Lenora frowns as she remembers the previous owner of her bow. "Right" she quietly responds as she takes out one of her knifes and they skin, clean, and cut the wolf together. Shirou feeds the leftover scraps to his sword.

*Hunting Sword Form Unlocked*

*Wolf Fang Sword Form Unlocked*

*Wolf Claw Sword Form Unlocked*

'So even individual pieces can make different sword forms?' Shirou has learned a few things about his sword while staying out in the wilderness for a few days. Such as its ability to replace most common tools like shovels and also learned that his sword storage system preserves the items he puts into it. This allows him to keep all his ingredients and materials fresh until they are needed. 'At least none of the wolf will go to waste.' He also learned that killing things have a chance to provide him with extra items called "monster drops" depending on what was killed.

"Now before we eat, hold out your hands." Shirou instructs Lenora.

"Ready" Lenora replies with slight anticipation, she is used to the routine by now.

"May pure waters wash away our daily toils." Shirou speaks a simple one-line aria and water begins to condense in the air around him. Shirou directs the water with a gesture and it swirls around their hands. The clear water turns dark as it collects the blood and dirt from their earlier work. A flick of his hand sends the collected filth away from their camp to splash somewhere in the distance.

Shirou has begun to experiment with his water magic. The basic water spells are used for convenience for now. He figures he should try to get more familiar with his new element before trying more combat oriented magics.

After the task is done, the two have breakfast. "How is it this morning?" Shirou asks Lenora about their food. "Its even better than yesterday!" Lenora happily answers. The local fish tastes a little different than he is used to but by experimenting a little with different spices, Shirou is able to improve their meals.

He was able to find some edible mushrooms yesterday as well as some wild herbs. This led to him unlocking the cooking and compounding swords. While Shirou did not mind having access to medicine, he was slightly offended that Vivian would think he would not want to do the cooking himself.

After breakfast, Shirou tells Lenora that they should wash up before they travel. Before she leaves however, he asks "What kind of clothes would you like today? We will be walking a bit today."

Lenora's eyes light up as she happily says "Oh! Can I have something light in black and yellow but is also easy to move in?"

Shirou thinks for a moment and then replies "Hmm, I think I have one" Shirou projects a black sundress with gold swirls all across the material.

Lenora takes the dress and briefly rubs her face on the soft material, a quiet chuckle makes her stop after she realized what she was doing. "What? I don't know what this is made of but it's way better than anything I've owned before. It's a shame they only last for a day."

"Only a day is just being cautious. We don't want you to take an unexpected hit and then *poof* naked as the day you were born." Shirou reminds her of the limited nature of his "magic clothes".

Lenora blushes at the thought "right."

Shirou tries to cheer her up. "I think we have been gone long enough that a quiet trip back to castle town should be fine. We will buy you some real clothes there."

Lenora's ears droop at the thought "I… don't really want to go back there." Shirou tries to reassure her "It will be ok. We can wear cloaks and besides you have nothing to fear. Walk proudly, you are the companion of the Legendary Sword Hero. Even bigots will think twice about messing with you."

Lenora gains back her confidence and replies "Right!"

Melromarc Castle Town Shopping District

Shirou and Lenora tried not to draw attention to themselves as they stop by the shopping district for some clothes. Shirou decided to return to someone he did not think would discriminate against Demi-Humans. This led them to Erhard's shop.

"Welcome-Oh Mr. Sword Hero! Nice to have you in my shop again." Erhard greets them.

Shirou and Lenora let down their cloaks "Its nice to see you again as well. I have come back for a few things for myself and my partner here." Shirou introduces Lenora who tries to keep the nervousness off her face as Erhard gives her a hard stare.

"Hmm… So, you too? Is she a slave as well?" Erhard questions. "I am no one's slave." Lenora proudly declares.

"Why would you think she is a slave?" Shirou asks.

"Just thinking about the Shield Hero. After the fiasco from a few days ago, he shows up here the other day with a little slave girl. Bought her a knife and some cheap clothes and then said they were going to fight demons. He paid his tab at the very least." Erhard informs Shirou.

"What kind of fiasco happened? We've been out of town for a few days." Shirou wants to know what they missed in town.

Erhard explains "Word is that Naofumi raped his female companion on the first day. The only reason he is not in jail is because he is needed for the waves and locking him up is not practical."

"He raped the princess?" Shirou is surprised.

"The princess? No, just his companion." Erhard is confused.

"So, she never revealed herself? How was the investigation done? Who were the witnesses? Where did this happen?" Shirou wants to know all the details.

"I don't actually know all those details. I assume the local Inn? I just heard that he was put on trial before the King the next day and found guilty." Erhard tells him.

"The very next day? How did they question the witnesses and build a case that quickly?" Shirou is confused.

"They didn't. The lady's confession was sufficient enough that judgment was given." Erhard quietly says.

"And you don't see the problem with that? That woman was the Kings daughter. I would be tempted to believe my own kids too but you know anyone is capable of lying. The least the king could do is investigate properly." Shirou says.

Erhard sighs "I really don't know. What I do know is that the situation is out of my hands. I looked the kid in the eye afterwards and his face only made me want to pity him. I sold him some basic gear and he just paid me back. The kid honors his promises at the very least."

"I will check in on him later. You would be surprised what my eyes can see" Shirou promises.

"Speaking of rumors, what happened to you? The same day as the Shield Hero's drama happened, I heard you could not be found. Then your former companion told everyone someone attempted to assassinate you and killed your other two members. Said you were going to stay away for a while out of caution."

Both Shirou and Lenora grimace as they remember the events, this did not go unnoticed by Erhard. "Yeah, that about summarizes it. It was not pleasant for anyone involved. Lenora here became an unwilling witness and we both decided to lay low for a bit. Now this stubborn girl is insisting on helping me with the waves." Shirou gives Lenora a small smirk at the end of his sentence.

"Hey! You said it yourself, we are partners now. What's trouble for you is trouble for me!" Lenora shouts back.

Erhard softly laughs at the two and says "Well, at least she's old enough to know what she is getting in too. So, what are you here for?"

"She needs some real clothes, armor, and a better shortbow. I would also like to take the time to look at some armor for myself." Shirou tells him.

"Proper clothes? She looks like she has nicer clothes than I sell." Erhard looks at her dress closer.

"We need something a bit sturdier. Good for travel" Shirou clarifies.

"I understand." Erhard ends up selling Lenora some traveling cloths along with a black and gold Gambeson jacket that would not catch on a bow string, smooth leather bracers to protect her hands and arms from the same string, and a short recurve bow with higher draw weight for greater penetration. She was not quite ready for the heavier longbows yet. She also got a quiver for broadheads and a second quiver for bodkin arrows.

Shirou purchased some steel mitten gauntlets, vambraces, greaves and cuirass. He normally would not like the loss of dexterity by using gauntlets but, considering he cannot use a bow anymore, the sacrifice was worth it now.

"Before we go, a quick question. Did you sell any equipment to the Shield hero on the first day?" Shirou asks Erhard.

"Hmm… actually I did sell him quite a bit of armor. When he showed up the next day, he was just in a tunic and pants. I believe the Spear Hero has it now." Erhard describes.

They thank Erhard for his work and the information. The two then leave to have lunch at the local Inn.

Castle Town Inn

Shirou and Lenora try the food at the local Inn.

'This is… decent I suppose' Shirou critiques his food. "What's your opinion?" Shirou asks Lenora.

"Hmm… It's not bad but yours is better." Lenora agrees with him.

"I cannot necessarily blame them. It's the kind of food that can be made in bulk but is also very filling. Not up to restaurant standards but this works perfectly well for travelers or those looking for a quick meal." Shirou thinks its food made by experience rather than passion. Its still well made, just nothing special.

"You know, a while ago I would have been grateful to eat anything not spoiled. Now look at me judging their freshly cooked food like a picky little brat." Lenora admonishes herself.

"Don't worry about it. The fact that you can take the time to judge means your situation has already improved." Shirou reassures her.

While they are eating, Shirou heard some interesting conversations around him. Some of the rumors are things he already heard, like the Shield Hero raping his companion, but he also hears that Naofumi took his slave girl here and "gave her more food than what she deserves." Some of the rumors included Shirou apparently being ghosted away after an attempted murder and wondering where he has gone. Other rumors just talked about the Spear and Bow heroes being seen around town. Apparently, the Spear Hero has collected a lot of beautiful women for his party.

He also heard some rumors about one of the local Lords getting especially upset at his servants for a recent incident and was taking his frustration out on them.

Shirou calls over the Innkeeper "Excuse me a moment. I would like to look at one of your rooms."

"Its one silver a night with a meal included. Or did you really just mean "look?"" The Innkeeper questions.

"I don't mind paying a silver for the inconvenience, I specifically want to take a look at the room the Shield Hero was using on his first night." Shirou explains.

"The Shield Heroes old room?" The keeper checks his ledger for a moment. "Well, no one is using that one right now but why would you want to see that?" The innkeeper is suspicious.

"Well, you may have heard but the Sword Hero is conducting an investigation. This is a part of it." Shirou reveals his jeweled sword underneath his cloak. "I just need a few minutes to check, you are welcome to monitor me while I do so. I have nothing nefarious in mind. I would also like to ask you a few questions if you do not mind."

"Just a few minutes?" The Innkeeper ask for confirmation, to which Shirou affirms.

"Alright, come with me then." The Innkeeper leads the two to the Shield Hero's old room.

The room in question looks just like every other guest room in the Inn. It has a single bed by a shut window, a small table and chair near the entrance, a rug, and a small closet. A simple cheap but clean room.

Shirou take a moment to examine the door's history "How many people have rented this room in the last three days?" Shirou ask's the keeper.

"I would have to check the books but I believe only two. I'm sure we kept anyone from renting the room the day the guards took the shield hero."

Shirou counts the number of times the door was opened. Getting the history of regular objects was a lot more difficult for Shirou. Unless something significant happened to the object, like it being damaged or the object having some emotional attachment to it, then nothing distinct would normally come up while analyzing it. Some simple information could still be gained however. This door was opened 5 times yesterday, 7 times the day before that, and 4 times on the day Naofumi was here. The door opened once at night, twice late at night, and then was slammed forcefully in the morning.

"Did the Shield Hero and his companion share the same room or did they rent separate ones?" Shirou asks.

"Two separate rooms." The keeper confirms.

"At what time did the lady leave?"

"I don't know. I would have to ask if any of the night staff saw her." The keeper calls over one of the maids from the hallway.

While the keeper and maid converse, Shirou checks the rest of the room. 'Window stayed close the entire night so no one entered from outside.' When Shirou checked the bed, he sees only Naofumi used it the entire night. Shirou figures that the only reason he even knows it was Naofumi was because his shield was pressed into the bedframe the entire night. 'If there was a rape, then it did not happen in this room. And not anytime after Naofumi went to bed either.'

The innkeeper finished conversing with his maid "according to the night staff. No one saw her after the two retired for the night and they never saw the lady leave. So, it had to have happened in the middle of the night."

"Did the king's men already talk to anyone here?" Shirou wants to know.

"The king's men have not been here since they kicked in the door to arrest the Shield Hero" the Innkeeper informs Shirou.

"I see. Thank you for your cooperation. We will be leaving now" Shirou hands him a silver coin as promised.

"Happy to be of service to one of the good Hero's" The innkeeper sends them off.

Shirou takes a moment to confirm with the maids that the keeper's words were true. After they also corroborated his claim, Shirou gave the girls a silver as well for their assistance and then he left the Inn with Lenora.

As the two walk the streets, Lenora frowns and her feline features droop as she tries to loosen the collar of her shirt "It's too hot outside to wear something like this. How do you deal with the heat?" Lenora asks Shirou.

"You get used to it. But when we make it back to camp, I will enchant both our armors to be comfortable in hot and cold weather" Shirou informs her.

Lenora's eyes and ears perk up "You can do that?"

"It's a pretty common enchantment back home. Mainly used among anyone who travels and/or fights a lot. Armor should be comfortable enough that you don't mind wearing it for hours at a time. Eventually, you will feel weird not having it on." Shirou explains.

"I do eventually want you to have something more protective like chainmail and at least a breastplate and backplate but we can wait until you get used to gambeson and your new bow first. I will be able to enchant those as well." Shirou begins to plan for their next upgrade for when they have the money to do so.

Lenora understands that she will only have to put up with it for a short while. She then begins to think about the investigation "So, what do you think? The Shield Hero would never stoop so low right?" Lenora hopes for the best.

Shirou walks a little closer to her and speaks quietly "I still need to confirm a few things but at the moment I believe Naofumi has done nothing wrong. I'll explain more when we are not being watched."

Lenora stiffens in response "Don't look around, that will only make it obvious we know they are there." Shirou tries to keep her calm.

"How do we lose them without running away then?" Lenora asks.

"Just follow me for now. We got one more stop to make and it's not a secret." Shirou leads her to Mahora's Magic Book Store.

Castle Town Magic Book Store

Mahora greets them again "Hello Shirou, Welcome back. Have you brought me some more of your magic tools? Maybe a rune reference book?"

"Not yet I'm afraid." Shirou apologizes. "I actually came here to see if this one has any magical affinities." Shirou gestures towards Lenora.

"Me?" Lenora is surprised.

"I said I would see if you were magically capable. Starting out by checking your affinities would make life easier for both of us." Shirou explains.

Mahora gestures for the girl to come to the glass orb she has.

Lenora tries to focus on pushing… something into the orb. As the silence went on, she worried nothing would happen. Suddenly her focus is broken when she hears a small clap.

"Well done for your first try. Take a look at what you've made." Mahora points to the inside of the glass orb.

Inside the orb, grey and white streaks can me seen. The wisps twist around each other with increasing speed until a small whirlwind can be seen spinning in pace.

"You have a strong wind affinity. Useful for quick movements and especially useful for archers." Mahora informs her. "Thankfully, it seems Shirou already has a book on wind magic for you. I hope he will remember my services later when it comes to making a magic book of his own."

Shirou reaffirms his commitment "I have not forgotten; we just have not had the time yet but I promise I will start on it soon."

"That is all I need to hear. Thank you for thinking of me and please come again soon." Mahora says her farewells.

With their new gear and knowledge, Shirou and Lenora once again go out towards the fields.

The two head towards the east entrance and slip in with a group of travelers. They travel with the group until dusk, when they break line of sight and slip away from the group and their followers under the cover of night. The two travel south first and then westward.

South Melromarc – Next Day

Shirou and Lenora ran into Naofumi and his slave the following day. The two had seemed to found some form of coordination with each other. Naofumi would take the front line and distract any enemies while the racoon girl would strike from the side or back with lethal intent.

The raccoon girl is the first to spot them "Um, Master? There's someone there."

Naofumi becomes alert and turns to look at them with suspicion "What? You here to talk down to me too? Give me your own punishment? What happened to the other guy?"

"Bakta decided hero life was not for him. Lenora here is my new partner." Shirou gestures to his companion, who offers a small wave. "I actually came by to see if you were ok. And to confirm if some rumors were true or not." Shirou answers.

"What you going to call me a criminal too?" Naofumi asks.

"No actually. I came to give you some advice. But first, I need to confirm something with your new friend." Shirou kneels on the ground for a moment and looks towards the racoon girl.

"What do you want with her? You can't have her, she's mine." Naofumi growls.

"I just need to get a look at her and her knife. I will not even touch her. May I?" Shirou asks.

Lenora lowers her hood, revealing her feline ears, and calls out to the slave girl. "It's alright. Shirou looks after girls like us."

Raphtalia is surprised at seeing a fellow Demi-Human and looks to Naofumi for permission. After she receives a nod of assent, she then approaches Shirou. Raphtalia flinches for a moment when Shirou's eyes suddenly glow gold.

'First an appraisal. Just a status report please.'

Name: Raphtalia

Race: Racoon Demi-Human

Age: 10

Level: 4

Status: Enslaved, Nervous

HP: 180/180

'No hunger, dehydration, sickness, exhaustion, or fear. He is treating her good at the very least.'

Shirou looks at her knife next 'Purchased at Erhard's shop and only used on common balloons and pill rabbits. It was given to her to fight against the waves in exchange for protection by the Shield Hero.'

"Thank you Raphtalia. That is all I need to see." Shirou stands up.

Raphtalia and Naofumi both look at Shirou in confusion "What was that for? And when did you learn her name anyways?" Naofumi questions.

"Just now. And I just wanted to confirm you were treating her right. I am going to be honest with you. I do not like slavers or those who own slaves. But given the fact that you have been screwed over by this country's rulers, I can at least understand the need to have someone you can trust by your side. Even if only because they physically incapable of betraying you. That said… did you really have to take a ten-year-old girl into battle?" Shirou seems disappointed with him.

"Hey! It's not like I really had any choice. After that bitch took everything from me, I barely had the money to afford anyone else." Naofumi tries to defend his actions.

Raphtalia, in a moment of bravery, puts herself in front of Naofumi. "Master has protected me like he promised. I have not been hit a single time. He took care of me when I was sick. He calmed me down when I was scared." She stares directly at Shirou.

Naofumi seemed surprised that she was so quickly willing to defend him despite how rude he has been to her.

"I can see that. You are a very brave girl." Shirou sighs and then stares directly at Naofumi "Demi-Humans are treated unkindly here. Please continue to help them if you can. They are exploited unless they have protection from strong or influential people. At least under you, she will be taken care of. If I ever hear you have abused her then we will have problems. Understand?"

"As long as she fights for me, then I will continue to take care of her. I don't really have any other options right now." Naofumi agrees.

"Alright. Now about your situation. I always though my luck was bad but you seem to have it even worse." Shirou offers some sympathy. "Lenora, why don't you help show Raphtalia how to use her knife while I talk with Naofumi?" Shirou asks Lenora.

Lenora looks at Raphtalia before she smiles "Sure, come on little Raph-chan, I will show you how to get the most out of your swings." Raphtalia looks to Naofumi for permission before she walks a few steps away to practice knife attacks.

Naofumi looks at Shirou with expectance "So, seeing that you seem to be helping me. I take it you don't believe I raped Myne?"

"I know you didn't. I checked the Inn you stayed at, questioned the witnesses or rather the lack of direct witnesses. And I know you slept in your bed alone the entire night. Melty also gave away the armor you bought from Erhard." Shirou confirms for Naofumi.

"How do you know that if you have been gone for days? And who the hell is Melty?" Naofumi asks.

"These eyes of mine can see a lot. Melty Melromarc is the daughter of King Melromarc. Also known as Myne Sophia. The woman who really hates you for some reason." Shirou explains.

"The fuck? That bitch is the PRINCESS? What did I ever do to her?" Naofumi exclaims.

"I don't actually know her motive. What I do know is that she lied to get you ostracized by the people. I don't know if the King is in on it but based on that fact that they didn't even give the façade of a proper investigation, then that means he is complacent in the act at the very least. What I do know is that the Church of the Hero Saints hated you before you were even summoned." Shirou explains what he knows so far.

"The Church also has something in mind for the rest of us Legendary Heroes. That rumor of me being attacked? Well, the mage who died was actually a spy from the Church sent to record and "Guide" me and they REALLY do not like Beastmen or Demi-Humans. They even tried to tell me on the first day that you were not to be trusted. I would use caution whenever dealing with them." Shirou warns him about the church's possible intentions.

"Speaking of the church. You should stop by and link with the Dragon Hourglass in town sometime so you can keep track of when the wave will arrive. They cannot deny you needing it to do your job properly. It will also teleport you and your party when the time comes."

Naofumi has to sit down after hearing that all the bullshit he has dealt with for the past few days is all the fault of the royal family and or Church. "So does everyone in this country hate me?" Naofumi asks.

"Not everyone. Erhard for example, along with anyone who can actually think for themselves. Most people have just been told they should hate you rather then have genuine anger at you. Besides that, I will inform you that the King does not have full authority for the things he is doing. The Queen is away right now and she is the true Monarch." Shirou tries to give him some hope.

"Do NOT challenge the King directly. Not only does he have unknown affiliations but he is also level 95. He outclasses us by far right now." Shirou warns.

"So, what should I do now?" Naofumi questions.

"First, scan this with your Shield. Let the Church think they can be sneaky and deny you it." Shirou holds up some sand from the Dragon Hourglass.

"Transport Shield?" Naofumi calls out the new shield form unlocked.

"It will let you teleport back to town or other places freely. Good for a quick escape or just to cut down travel time." Shirou explains.

"Next, just continue what you are currently doing. Grow stronger, take care of Raphtalia, and prepare for the waves. There is no evidence of you doing anything wrong. So, prove everyone else wrong with your actions. My advice would be to bide your time until the Queen comes back. She is the one with the real power to help you here. I will help you when you need me but for now, we got to train too." Shirou promises to help when he can.

"Actually, before we leave, I got some practical advice about shields and fighting for you. If you want to hear it." Shirou offers.

"At this point I will take any help I can get." Naofumi reluctantly accepts.

"First off, the shield isn't just a defensive armor. While it can be used to block, you should treat it like a blunt weapon. I know your attack is Zero but your strength is not negligible. A shield has hard edges and sometimes points. You may not do any damage but a hit to the face will daze or rattle most people. A strike to the side of leg joints can not only unbalance them but also potentially dislocate their limbs when they put their own weight on it."

"You need to think cleverly. Have you ever heard the labors of Hercules?" Shirou asks.

"Um. Wasn't he a Greek Demi-God?" Naofumi questions.

"Correct. Did you know he fought an enemy that even with his great strength and weapons, he could not hurt? How do you kill an enemy when you cannot do any damage?" Shirou gives him a scenario.

"He got help I'm assuming?" Naofumi answers uncertainly.

"No, he did not. He deprived the Nemean Lion of something most of us need to survive."

"What?" Naofumi wonders.

"Air." Shirou answers "When he realized he could not hurt the lion normally, he wrapped his arms around the lion's throat and strangled him to death. There are many ways to kill something. Suffocate them, drown them, bleed them, use poison, make them fall a great distance, bury them under rubble, use whatever you can to win."

"If you shove the edge of your shield into someone's throat then you can collapse their airway which will deprive them of air, our weapons can make poisons too. Strength means nothing when you are fighting sickness or disease. Poisons can kill but they can also blind, take away your strength, put people to sleep, or paralyze." Shirou continues.

"Remember, you are the first line of defense. Practice your footwork. Make sure nothing can move you and nothing can get past you. If you angle your shield properly, then you can both deflect attacks and counter with strike of your own. If you raise your shield and then angle it towards your feet then you will funnel flames and liquids downwards so they don't splash over into your face." Shirou demonstrates by shooting a blast of water at Naofumi.

Shirou spent some time instructing the basics of shield work. He also took the time to help Naofumi understand the different benefits of various shield types. From the small buckler, to larger round and kite shields, all the way up to great shields.

While this was going on. Lenora passed on Shirou's knowledge of knifemanship. She emphasized how to make the best use of such a small blade by attacking the vulnerable points of the body. She showed where the easy to access carotid, brachial, and femoral arteries on a humanoid were. Instructed how to slip a dagger in-between the ribs to attack the lungs or heart. Pointed out how someone would bleed to death faster by stabbing them in the groin than if she slit someone's throat. She also instructed on how to cripple someone and bypass heavy armor by aiming for joints and gaps in plates.

Raphtalia looked squeamish as she was told all these grisly details but, when she looked over to Naofumi and realized that he was just as new to all of this as she was, she gained a look of determination to be the blade that the Shield Hero needs.

At the end of the afternoon. Naofumi and Raphtalia rest at their campsite after becoming mentally and physically exhausted by their impromptu training session. Shirou takes pity on them and decides to cook dinner for all four of them.

"You know the Legendary weapons can do the cooking for us right?" Naofumi tries to help Shirou.

"Oh, I am aware. I did unlock the cooking sword but I find the act of cooking myself to be relaxing after a hard day's work." Shirou waves off his attempt to short cut the cooking process.

"Well since it will take a little while… where did you learn all of these fighting techniques?" Naofumi asks Shirou. This question gets the attention of Lenora and Raphtalia as well.

"Hard won experience I'm afraid. I almost died a couple dozen times before I was even an adult. If not for my father teaching me the basics, then I probably would not be here today. I learned how to kill people and monsters who were stronger, faster, and more experienced than me. Before I was summoned along with you, I honestly thought I was going to die at the age of twenty-four." Shirou admits.

"I hope you haven't given up on fighting. I have seen the worst of humanity. But I have also seen the best. I have seen and fought beside true heroes and survived. You have been given a bad start in this life. But a real hero rises above adversity. A real hero would not falter on doing what needs to be done." Shirou states.

"Myne has dealt the first blow. But it is a superficial hit to your reputation. You are still healthy and you can still fight. You are not alone out here. You still have allies and supporters. Show them what it means to be a real Hero. Don't let the people walk all over you but don't become the villain they want you to be either. Don't give Melty the satisfaction of winning." Shirou tries to encourage Naofumi.

Naofumi thinks about the smirk on Mynes face when he was labeled a criminal in the Kings Audience Chamber. About how she had the nerve to give the Motoyasu the armor he stole from him. Lied about him in front of all the other heroes.

"I won't let her win!" Naofumi growls in response.

"Good. Now I might have a gift for you but I need to ask first." Shirou tells Naofumi before he looks to his Legendary Sword. "Hey Vivian? I want to project Naofumi a shield but I will not fight with it. Is that allowed?" The blue jewel on his sword flashes as she answers.

*…*

"Projection limitations lifted for the purposes of instruction."

Shirou sighs in relief "Thank you for understanding."

Naofumi looks at Shirou in confusion "Who is Vivian?"

"That would be what we decided to call the Legendary Sword. Every legendary weapon deserves a name, right? She has been very helpful in teaching me what I can and cannot do. Hasn't the Legendary Shield been helping you?" Shirou explains. The legendary sword replies to Shirou.

"It is my duty to serve to the best of my abilities."

"Mine hasn't really been that vocal but they have been letting me know when I'm around something I can get a shield form from." Naofumi replies.

"Now I hope I can do something about your no attack stat issue. Please wait a moment." Shirou begins to trace one of his shields. The trace takes a significantly longer time than usual. 'Its like I'm trying to drag it out of the mud. Or fish it out of deep waters? Definitely can't do this mid combat' Eventually the blue light of his mana solidifies into an unusual type of shield called an Adaga.

The shield in Shirou's hand is odd. The rectangular shield is about the size of a torso; however, each corner of the shield is shaped into a small spearpoint. A short spike stands out from the center of the shield.

"This is a shield called an Adaga. An uncommon shield wielded with the intent to do harm. Some soldiers in the past would wield two of these at the same time and use it to charge an enemy line with their spikes. I will warn you that the spikes can catch on things or people so please be aware of your surroundings while using it." Shirou explains the basics of its use and held the shield out for Naofumi to copy.

Naofumi looks hopeful as he raises his Legendary Shield to copy the new shield. After a flash of green, Naofumi has a confused look on his face. "Mage Shield unlocked? It's not called an Adaga." Naofumi informs Shirou.

"Its not?" Shirou is confused as well. He traces a tower shield for him to try to copy.

"Mage Shield Form already unlocked" Naofumi reads the message from his shield. "It's like it doesn't recognize it as a different type of shield?"

Shirou traces a saber for his sword to copy.

*Steel Saber Sword Form unlocked*

He then traces a German Zweihänder.

*Steel Zweihänder Sword Form unlocked*

Next is a European Arming Sword.

*Steel One-Handed Knight's Sword Form unlocked*

"I don't know what to say. Vivian is copying my swords just fine." Shirou does not know what's wrong. "What does the Mage Shield do anyways?" Shirou asks in curiosity.

Naofumi Shifts his shield into the new form. The Shield takes the shape of a medieval heater shield with a three-point top. The shield looks to be made of steel but has the iconic emerald of the Legendary Shield. What sets it apart from normal shields is the circuit like lines of green crystal that spread across the shield from the center gem. The lines glow with a faint green light.

"Ability: Mana attack: May convert MP into a damaging melee magic attack. Damage equal to mana sacrificed per attack." Naofumi reads the ability out loud for everyone to hear.

"So theoretically, you can make a series of small magic attacks or a single powerful strike. Well, it is not what I was trying to give you but at least it gives you the ability to perform a debilitating strike or finish something off." Shirou decides the experiment is a success even if not the intended result.

"I wonder why your Legendary Shield cannot copy my projections but mine can?" Shirou says out loud.

*Hypothesis*

"The Legendary Shield lacks a deep connection to the creator of the shield"

"The Legendary Shield is only able to scan the projection at a surface level"

"I possess a deep connection to your soul. I am not hindered by this limitation."

"That makes sense. But also worries me slightly. What are you doing in there?" Shirou asks his sword.

"It is my duty to serve the Sword Hero to the best of my abilities."

"That is not an answer." Shirou sighs at Vivian's deflection but he can't really do anything about it right now.

Shirou explains Vivian's hypothesis and apologizes for not being able to help him out more.

"Its alright. You have already helped me out way more than most people around here have. I have an attack option at the very least but constantly draining my MP sounds like a bad idea so I will use it sparingly. At least if offers decent magic defense." Naofumi is thankful for the help.

Dinner is ready by the time the revelations are over and all of them are treated to Shirou's home cooking. Everyone feels energized and their spirits are lifted after the meal.

"This is really good!" Raphtalia exclaims, seemingly over her initial aversion to the two newcomers.

"It really is. Thank you for all your help today." Naofumi thanks Shirou and Lenora.

"No problem. I wish I could stick around and help but our Legendary weapons won't let us grow stronger together so we will have to leave for now." Shirou and Lenora get ready to leave.

"But before that, I have one last question for Raphtalia." Shirou turns to the racoon girl.

"What is it?" Raphtalia asks, her earlier hesitation gone.

"I'm sorry to ask you this but, who sold you to the slave trader that Naofumi bought you from?" Shirou asks with a stern gaze.

Raphtalia flinches and her animal features and face drop as she is suddenly reminded of how she got to Castle Town. After a moment's hesitation, she finally gathers the courage to say "I-Idol Rabier… Lord of the Rabier territory."

"Why do you want to know?" Naofumi questions Shirou.

When Shirou turns to look at Naofumi, he is met with the stoic face of Shirou "Because we are going to pay a visit to this Lord's territory and see for ourselves what he is doing. I doubt he will enjoy the visit." Shirou answers.

"Thank you for the information. I know you both will continue to grow strong from here. We will see you both later when the wave gets closer. Good luck out here." Shirou and Lenora walk away heading to the northwest.

After the two are gone Raphtalia says "They seemed nice. Lenora was patient when teaching me. Master has also been nicer today."

Naofumi sighs and replies "Look, I am sorry for how standoffish I have been. I recently got screwed over by someone I thought I could trust and I was punished for a crime I did not commit. I have wrongly taken some of my frustration out on you. And for that I am sorry, you didn't deserve that. My situation has not changed however. I still need someone to fight for me. My promise still stands. If you fight beside me, then I will protect you with my life."

Raphtalia takes a moment to let the words sink in before she smiles "I always new the Shield Hero was a good person. I will do the best I can for you." She reaffirms fer commitment to the Shield Hero.

The master and slave go to sleep and awaken the next day with a renewed drive to better themselves.

Fields of Melromarc – Southwest of Castle Town

As Shirou and Lenora make their way to Rabier territory, Shirou discuss their intentions "Over the next few days on the way to the Lord's territory, I am going to explain the basics of infiltration. As we travel during the day, we will kill every monster we come across. When we stop traveling for the night, we both will need to practice magic. Your wind magic should help give your arrows more power and increase your accuracy. I will also practice some ice magic just in case. Vivian has given me some ideas for some sword skills as well."

"What do we intend to do while we are there?" Lenora asks with some nervousness.

"That will depend on what we see. We may not be strong enough yet to do much. But the least I can do is build a case on this man. Slavery is the norm here. But what little I've seen from Raphtalia implies we will not like what we see. All I promise is that we will do what we can to help." Shirou explains the plan.

"This is probably going to be more dangerous than you are used to. If you feel uncomfortable about this then you do not have to come with me during the infiltration. There is a high chance we will have to hurt someone during the check." Shirou gives her the opportunity to keep her conscience clean.

"I am your partner." Lenora states. "We will do what we must. It is the least I can do for my people and Raphtalia." Lenora will not be dissuaded so easily.

Shirou sighs at her response "Alright, just remember I am here if you need me."

The two never did expect how their party would change after this visit.

Author notes: (Possible Spoilers)

Shirou bonds a little with Lenora. She is a little distrustful of people but she was old enough to deal with her family dying in the waves. She suffers from some depression and low self esteem but she is in a way better position mentally than Raphtalia is.

Shirou has begun to experiment with his new magic and is learning more about his Legendary Sword.

He also shows off his preference for convenient and practical magecraft.

Shirou may have not been able to cast a lot of spells in the past but when you make a career out of hunting down and killing rogue magus and supernatural creatures, you learn a lot about magic in general.

Just to be clear, Shirou is not pro-slavery. But he knows he is not in a position to do anything about it right now. As long as they are not suffering, he can tolerate it for now. Shirou's time in clocktower has made him used to worse situations and treatments, such as those bound by various types of geas.

The Shirou I'm going for is one who still wants to do good in the world like a Hero would. But unlike some of his other versions, this Shirou has learned to take the time to relax between missions and to bide his time to tackle a problem more thoroughly. That said. Shirou is a hypocrite who can't bear to see someone suffer in front of him and will sometimes intervene when he knows he logically shouldn't.

Shirou, in this story, has experience working as a hunter of dangerous people and monsters. This means he would be familiar with conducting an investigation and would have knowledge of how to track down a threat and how to escape from one. He also knows how devious and cruel people can be. He does not have the title "Magus Killer II" for nothing. The reason for both of his titles will be explained later.

His history reading with structural grasping has gotten a lot of practical practice from his hunting career.

Shirou would not let someone he knew be convicted of a crime without evidence. And after Sakura, he would insist on doing the investigation himself. Especially after he hears that no one bothered to even perform an investigation in the first place.

Shirou knows at this point that Naofumi is innocent but he has enough experience working in clocktower to know that he can't make any major moves without either irrefutable evidence, a powerful patron, and/or being so powerful that the authorities are forced to listen to him.

So, he settles on helping Naofumi and Raphtalia with a crash course on fighting. With a promise to help them in the future. Stupid move or not, Shirou will not help someone get away with performing bad deeds so he will not be on the King's/Myne's side if forced to choose.

Shirou is trained to go for the kill as fast as possible when necessary and he passes this knowledge on to whoever he teaches. What does this mean in game terms? To me it means every vulnerable point hit is an automatic critical hit and can cause debilitations and/or bleeding.

This also serves to keep Naofumi from going too far into a despair. This does not mean that Naofumi can't still get angry.

As for the Legendary Weapons, Shirou is the best faker out there. The legendary Weapons look into the attributes and materials of an object but then they create something new based on that. They are unable to see Shirou's projections as anything but a "Magic Weapon." The Legendary Sword Vivian however has a direct link to Shirou's soul so she sees the projections as they truly are. It is also why her sword form copies are just as good as the original located in UBW. Vivian is still "redecorating" the inside of Shirou's soulscape.
