Chapter 47
A New Addition
Severus stepped forward quickly and caught Draco as he fell. He gently lowered him to the ground. Then he stood shakily and tried to clear his mind as his heart pounded. He looked down at the two unconscious boys. He needed to move them and get them into the castle. They were not safe standing here outside the wards.
With a deep breath he conjured two stretchers and knelt to lift the younger boy onto the first. Severus gently brushed the hair off of his face and recognized Timmothy Heart, an incoming second year Hufflepuff. His body was twitching, and he was covered in dirt.
Severus turned away from the boy and looked down at his godson. He looked rough. He gathered the boy in his arms and placed him on the other stretcher before waving his wand to levitate them.
With anxiety pounding in his veins, he walked towards the castle with the boys following him.
The adrenaline was beginning to wear off.
After Harry's alarmed statement of 'Draco' He had quickly stated that the boy was in grave danger. The Dark Lord was going to kill him. He told Severus to apparate near the gates of Malfoy manor, that Draco was running that way.
Severus had raced out of the house and apparated into the woods. He couldn't hear or see anything beyond the wards. It appeared empty but he knew the manor lay just beyond. His heart had been beating out of his chest and his breathing had been erratic. He had wiped sweaty palms on his trousers as he waited. It had been a foolishly Gryffindor move to apparate into enemy territory. He could have landed in a mess of Death Eaters and been ripped apart.
His breath had caught when he saw the flash of white-blond hair stumbling into the woods. The dark obscured his features, but he was sure it was Draco. He'd been shocked to discover that his godson was carrying another person. Draco's fidgety movement's told Severus they didn't have long. The others were coming. He'd covered the boy's mouth and grabbed him quickly before apparating away. It hadn't been the smoothest landing, but side-along apparating one person was difficult, two was messy. He was surprised he hadn't splinched any of them.
Severus looked down at Draco's face as they made their way up the school steps. Draco was still unconscious. He swallowed hard. He hoped that he had gotten to him in time. The blood he had coughed up was alarming.
"Poppy!" Severus yelled as he burst into the Hospital wing.
He directed the stretchers to beds and ran to Poppy's office. He tried the door and found it locked. His mind began to rush as he banged on the door.
"Poppy." Severus called again.
When there was no response, he stepped back and took a deep breath to clear his mind.
"Shit." Severus cursed.
Poppy wasn't here. She was stashed away with the victims of the last raid.
"Expecto Patronum." Severus said waving his wand.
"Albus, I need a healer! Right now! I'm in the hospital wing." Severus spoke to the doe.
"Go to Albus." Severus commanded.
With another breath he quickly made it to the potions store and collected a variety of potions. He had no idea what the children had suffered. Draco almost certainly had internal bleeding.
Once his arms were full, he took long strides back across the wing. Just as he was about to reach the boys there was a bright flash of light.
Remus was startled awake by shouting in the sitting room.
"Remus." Called a voice.
Sirius groaned and rolled tighter around Remus' chest. His long dark hair splayed across Remus' chest.
"Sirius." Remus called softly and tapped his arm.
"Huh…what?" Sirius grumbled.
"Remus!" The voice called slightly more panicked.
Remus furrowed his brow. It sounded like Albus.
"Sirius, Albus is here. Something is wrong." Remus said sitting up and detangling Sirius' limbs from his.
Sirius sat up immediately.
"What?" Sirius said climbing out of bed.
Remus shrugged and quickly made his way to the sitting room. Albus stood in the middle of the room, Fawkes perched on his shoulder.
"Remus, I need you to come with me immediately." Albus said walking towards them.
Remus nodded.
"What's happened?" Sirius asked.
"I am unsure. Stay here." Albus instructed.
Remus turned to Sirius with an apologetic look.
"It'll be okay." Remus reassured reaching out and squeezing Sirius hand.
Sirius looked at him with pleading eyes but nodded resignedly.
"Be careful. I love you." Sirius said softly.
Remus smiled back. His heart clenched and he nodded.
Remus pulled his wand from the waistband of his pants and quickly transfigured his clothing from sleep wear to something more appropriate to leave the house. He summoned his shoes and shoved his feet in.
With a nod he reached out and took Albus' hand. With a woosh the sitting room of Lupin cottage disappeared.
Remus looked around when he realized he was in the hospital wing at Hogwarts. He saw Severus storming towards them and felt his heart sink to his feet.
Harry!
Remus turned away from the man and looked around. He spotted two beds occupied and stepped closer. Neither was Harry. One was the young Malfoy boy. The other he didn't recognize.
"What happened, Severus?" Albus asked, stepping up next to Remus and looking down at the boys.
Remus looked away and met Severus' eyes. The man seemed to be trying to cram down his panic.
Severus shook his head and started setting down potions next to Malfoy's bed.
"Harry had a vision. He said the Dark Lord was going to kill Draco. Told me to apparate to the gates of the manor." Severus rambled as he vanished the boy's shirt.
Remus looked down at the boy. He was thin and pale, but more alarming was the large bruise on his right side. Almost certainly broken ribs. Remus also noticed that the boy's arm was bright red and in the center was the dark mark.
Remus swallowed.
"And this child." Remus said stepping up next to the other boy.
He had dark shaggy hair and a round face. Remus doubted he was more than eleven or twelve. He appeared to be breathing but his face was pinched in pain.
"I don't know. Draco was carrying him when I found them." Severus said shaking his head.
Remus saw Severus wave his wand over a vial and spell it into Malfoy's stomach.
Remus nodded and focused on the boy in front of him.
"The tremors indicate he was subjected to the Cruciatus." Remus mumbled.
He raised his wand and vanished the boy's shirt. He had a few bruises but nothing alarming.
"His name is Timmothy Heart. He will be a second year Hufflepuff in the fall." Albus said stepping up next to Remus.
Remus nodded.
"Muggleborn?" Remus asked as he pushed around the boy's ribs to check them.
"Yes." Albus said sadly.
Remus clenched his jaw and nodded. He thought that the Muggleborns were under the orders protection. How had there been another attack?
Remus moved around Albus and over to the table Severus had put the potions on. Remus collected bruise balm and a post-Cruciatus potion as well as a pain potion.
Remus glanced up and noticed that Severus hands were shaking.
"He'll be okay." Remus said softly.
Severus looked up with a slightly lost look on his face that became pinched in the familiar anger.
"I asked for assistance because there were two children that needed help. So, help." Severus growled.
Remus nodded and walked back to Timmothy.
He quickly spelled the potions into his stomach and went about addressing the bruises. He had rather large ones on his lower back like he had been kicked while on the ground.
Remus vanished the boy's trousers leaving him in just pants. His legs were bruised as well.
Time ticked by as he gently addressed each one.
He cast a diagnostic over the boy once the visible injuries were addressed.
The diagnostic said his kidneys were bruised but otherwise he should recover.
"Fuck!" Severus cursed.
Remus looked up and saw Severus desperately waving his wand.
"Albus, would you find some pajamas for Mr. Heart." Remus said walking past the headmaster.
"Of course." Albus said heading to the linens closet.
Remus stood across from Severus and looked down at Malfoy.
"How can I help?" Remus asked.
Severus looked at him. The anger was still there but it faded to a desperate look.
"He has several broken ribs. One has punctured his lung. I can't seem to get the ribs to set properly, so that I can repair the lung. He is really starting to struggle to breathe." Severus explained, his voice shaking slightly.
"I've spelled in two blood replenishers, but he is still bleeding. I don't dare give him another until the wound is closed." Severus added.
Remus nodded.
"Let me fix the rib." Remus said raising his wand but holding off on casting anything.
Severus gave a shaky nod and Remus began the incantation.
Sirius sat on the couch bouncing his knee. It had been nearly five hours since Remus left, and he hadn't heard anything. He had downed a pot of coffee and had paced around the house. He was exhausted. They'd only been asleep for about two hours when Albus had shown up.
He sighed and dropped his head into his hands and ran his fingers through his tangled hair.
The not knowing was killing him. Had there been a raid? Was something wrong at Hogwarts? Was something wrong with Harry again?
All the horrible possibilities running through his head were really starting to worry him the longer he waited.
With a sigh he stood and began pacing again.
Suddenly the floo flared and Sirius spun around. Remus' face was in the flames.
"Remus." Sirius cried, crouching down in front of the flames.
"Are you okay?" Sirius asked.
Remus smiled tiredly and nodded.
"I'm fine Siri." Remus said.
"What happened?" Sirius said, sitting down on his bottom when he realized how much pain a crouched position was causing his knees.
"Two students were injured. I was needed to help heal them. Poppy is still at the safe house. One of her charges has been having complications." Remus explained.
Sirius nodded and sighed in relief. At least Remus was safe.
"What is going to happen with the students?" Sirius asked.
Remus got a pinched look on his face.
"One will be going to the safe house where Poppy is for the time being. We are unsure of his mental state. He was subjected to crucio for an undetermined amount of time. The other I'm unsure." Remus said.
Sirius nodded.
"Was there a raid?" Sirius asked.
Remus just shrugged.
"Severus brought them in." Remus said.
That didn't make any sense.
"What aren't you telling me?" Sirius asked.
Remus sighed and looked away.
"Harry had another vision. I was calling on Severus' request, to see if you could go to his house and check on Harry. We are needed here until Poppy is able to come." Remus said.
Sirius nodded and stood.
"Of course. I'll floo right there. Do you need anything?" Sirius asked.
Remus rubbed his face and shook his head.
"No, I'm all right. We dosed both kids with dreamless sleep. I may try and rest. Hopefully, they will be awake by eleven or so. Poppy is expected back around then." Remus said with a sigh.
The exhaustion was clear on his face.
"Okay. I'll see you then." Sirius said.
Remus nodded.
"I love you. Go check on our pup. Severus said he's still sick. There should be a stock of potions in the office if he needs anything." Remus said.
Sirius nodded.
"Okay. I got it." Sirius said.
With short nods the floo closed.
Sirius took some deep breaths. He'd seen Harry after a vision before. He'd had one at Grimmauld over Christmas break. He had been fidgety and stressed the rest of the night, pacing around the library.
Sirius took some floo powder and tossed it in.
"Spinner's End." Sirius called, before stepping into the flames.
Sirius stepped through the floo and nearly stepped on Harry. The boy was laying with his eyes wide staring at the ceiling.
"Harry?" Sirius called in slight alarm.
Harry didn't move anything other than his eyes.
Sirius sucked in a breath at the broken look in the boy's eyes. There were dried tears on his face and his mouth was pulled into a deep frown. His lip trembled a little.
"Are they dead?" Harry whispered. His voice was rough like he had been screaming and crying.
Sirius knelt down next to Harry and shook his head.
"No, Snape got the kids. They're at Hogwarts." Sirius said calmly.
Harry nodded and looked back at the ceiling and blinked as a fresh wave of tears rolled down his face.
Sirius closed his eyes. They had both been left to wonder what was happening. He wished he had known. He would have come sooner.
"They're okay." Sirius tried to soothe.
He reached out a hand and tried to set it on Harry's shoulder. There was a flinch but then Harry seemed to settle.
"Come on pup. Why don't we get you something to eat and your potions." Sirius said squeezing Harry's shoulder.
Sirius stood and held out his hand for Harry. Harry nodded and reached for the hand.
Severus sat in a chair next to Draco's bed, staring down at his clasped hands.
He had nearly lost Draco. If Lupin hadn't stepped in when he had, the boy would have surely died. His mind circled with all the questions. What happened tonight? When had Draco been marked? Why had he taken the other child? Why was the Dark Lord trying to kill him? Where were Lucius and Narcissa?
Severus sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He wanted Draco to wake up. He wanted to talk to him.
Albus had left an hour ago to check the safehouse the Malfoy's had portkeys to. Severus wasn't expecting much. If the Dark Lord had been set on killing Draco and he had gotten away, there was no doubt that his parents were dead.
Severus groaned. This was a mess. He looked over at the pale boy laying in the bed. His color was starting to come back now that the blood replenishers were starting to work. His eyes looked past the bed to the man in the chair between the two boys.
Lupin's head kept slumping forward. He had used a lot of magic to keep Draco alive. Severus was sure the man was exhausted. Not to mention this whole thing had started in the middle of the night and the sun had long since come up.
With another sigh Severus stood and walked to the potions cupboard and retrieved two Pepper-up potions. He popped the cork out of one and swallowed it down. There was no chance he would get more sleep today.
Severus was thankful Lupin had remembered Harry. In his panic he had nearly forgotten that he had a sick child at home who was probably beside himself. He didn't like that Black was at his house, especially without supervision. However, it was better than Harry being alone.
"Lupin." Severus called when he was standing in front of the man.
Lupin's head snapped up. He looked to either side, to the boys. Satisfied that neither appeared to be in trouble he sighed and met Severus' eye.
"What?" Lupin said, his voice thick with sleep.
Severus held out the pepper-up.
Lupin gave him a tight smile and took the potion.
"Thank you." Lupin said softly.
Severus nodded.
"Poppy and Albus should be here soon." Severus remarked.
Lupin nodded and stood, stretching his back as he did so.
"Where will Albus send the Malfoy boy?" Remus asked as he stepped up next to young Mr. Heart.
Severus sighed. It was a question he had been asking himself. He was the boy's godfather and should take him in. However, he was already housing one child and hardly had the room to put up another. He also wasn't sure what Draco would want. He was sure his feelings had changed since Severus had been outed as a spy.
"I am unsure." Severus said softly.
Lupin nodded and walked over to Draco.
They stood in silence looking at the latest victims of this war. Severus wished that the children of their world could be spared this pain. The chances were high that both boys were now orphans.
The doors to the hospital wing swung open and in walked Albus and Poppy. Severus felt relief at their return. Though he had some confidence in his ability to heal and had been very thankful of Lupin's assistance, Poppy would know for sure if the children would be okay.
"I'm sorry for the delay. Ms. Bell has been struggling to recover. I worried if I left before she was stable, she might decline in my absence.
Severus sighed, reminded of the other children that were currently suffering.
"Is she improving at all?" Severus asked.
Poppy nodded as she bustled over to Mr. Heart.
"Yes, she will need several more rounds of treatment and I fear she will be left with permanent scars. However, that is an improvement to when she first arrived. I wasn't sure she was going to make it through the first day." Poppy said softly, before waving her wand over the child in the bed.
"Tell me what you can about Mr. Heart." Poppy said.
Lupin stepped up and explained what they had treated while Poppy nodded along.
"I think he will recover. He can join the others at the safe house for now." Poppy said with a nod before walking up next to Draco's bed.
"And what of Mr. Malfoy." Poppy asked.
Again, Remus answered.
Severus felt a ball of anxiety lodged in his throat. He worried they had missed something, and he wasn't actually as okay as they thought he was.
Poppy nodded again and stepped away from the boy's bed.
"Mr. Malfoy will undoubtedly be a little sore when he wakes up, but he should be fine." Poppy said.
Severus released the breath he was holding.
"We should move Mr. Heart while he is still under the dreamless sleep. Travel might be difficult or upsetting once he wakes up." Poppy said to Albus.
"Very well." Albus said stepping up to look over the boys.
"Remus, why don't you go ahead and collect Sirius. Severus should be home shortly." Albus instructed.
Remus looked at the boys and then at Severus.
Severus nodded and with that Remus headed to the floo in Poppy's office.
"Severus, if I could have a word." Albus said as he headed towards the back of the wing.
Severus sighed and followed the man.
When they reached the wall near the restroom, Albus raised his wand and put up privacy wards.
Severus raised an eyebrow in question.
"I hate to ask you Severus but I'm not sure what else to do with the boy. Will you please house Mr. Malfoy until other arrangements can be made?" Albus asked.
Severus sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.
"I take it you did not locate Lucius or Narcissa." Severus said.
Albus looked grave and shook his head.
"No, unfortunately." Albus said gravely.
They both understood the implications.
Severus looked up at the vaulted ceiling. He knew he should take in the boy but how?
"I do not have a large house Albus. Surely something else can be arranged. I already have one brat under my roof. I am not a daycare." Severus said with a slight growl.
Albus combed his fingers through his beard.
"I understand Severus. Perhaps we could send Mr. Potter back to his former home for a while. The wards aren't what they were but currently they are the best we have on a property." Albus said in thought.
Severus bit his tongue. That would not be happening.
"I would prefer he wasn't staying alone but perhaps we can have other order members check in on him. The Malfoy boy needs to be watched for the time being. I was unaware that he had been marked and do not want to be taken by surprise." Albus continued.
Severus wondered if he could get away with strangling the old fool with his own beard.
With a sigh Severus tucked away his murderous thoughts.
"I know taking on both boys seems daunting. I hate to ask this of you Severus. However, I feel our options are limited. I could expand a room or perhaps add an additional room in your home." Albus proposed.
Severus groaned. He didn't want the house altered but he supposed it might work.
"And what am I supposed to do with Potter and Malfoy when they start hexing one another in my kitchen." Severus voiced his other major concern with this arrangement.
The two fought like cats and dogs. Being forced to stay in the same house was just asking for trouble. He couldn't very well ask Harry to leave. He had just told him he could stay.
They had finally started to break down some of the walls. Harry would no doubt feel rejected. Albus' idea of sending him to Honeysuckle house was ludicrous. If it was up to Severus, Harry would never set foot there again.
Draco on the other hand would act superior and think he would be allowed free reign.
Albus chuckled.
"Perhaps this is an opportunity for some of that inner-house unity we have been pushing for." Albus said.
Severus raised an incredulous eyebrow.
"I hardly think these two would be a great place to start." Severus responded.
Albus just shrugged.
"I will check in regularly. If things aren't working, then we will see what else we can do. This would be a good opportunity for them to both get some dueling practice as well." Albus added.
Severus groaned. That was the last thing they needed. Telling the boys to duel would undoubtedly land one or both of them in the hospital wing.
"Please Severus. Black should be cleared in just a couple of weeks. Harry should be gone by the end of the month." Albus begged.
Severus rolled his eyes.
This was a bad idea. Draco was hurt and he was going to be defensive when he woke up. Harry was sick and going through some very difficult emotional struggles. Throwing them together was not going to lead to the result Albus wanted.
With a sigh Severus nodded.
"Very well." Severus drawled.
Albus smiled and the twinkle returned to his eye.
"Good. Well with that sorted, I'm going to assist Poppy in moving Mr. Heart. When I return, hopefully Mr. Malfoy will be awake, and you will have a chance to speak with him. I will accompany you home and set up the new room. I'd also like a chance to speak with Mr. Potter." Albus said.
Severus nodded unhappily.
"As you wish headmaster." Severus answered.
Albus nodded and headed back to Poppy.
Severus groaned. He longed for summers alone brewing in his lab. Before the Dark lords return. Before Potter had been dumped on him. Before all of this. Summers were meant to be his break from the students. How he had been saddled with not one but two extremely complicated children was beyond him.
With another sigh he followed Albus. It wasn't Harry or Draco's fault that they were in this situation. He would not take this out on them. He'd already done enough damage with Harry.
He would be holding Albus responsible though. Perhaps he could get a nice bottle of wine out of the old man for his trouble. He was going to need it if he was to have both boys for the next two to six weeks.
Harry stared blankly at the cold cup of tea in front of him. He felt numb. Sirius had tried to ask about what he had seen but he just hadn't felt up to talking about it. He had taken his potions and nibbled on some toast, but he just couldn't find the energy to do anything else. His potions seemed to have resolved the last of his flu for which he was thankful.
He vaguely registered that the floo had flared and then Sirius stood from the table, but he couldn't be bothered.
He assumed it was Snape.
"Hey pup." Remus said from the doorway.
Harry turned and looked at him. He looked as exhausted as Harry felt.
"Hi." Harry said softly.
Remus walked over and Harry briefly wondered where Sirius had gone.
Remus settled into the seat next to him.
"How are you doing?" Remus asked.
Harry shrugged. He didn't know how he was feeling. The vision had been horrifying like all the others. Seeing the torture and deaths left him shaken.
He had felt so worried about Snape though, he had attempted to break back into Voldemort's mind. It hadn't been very successful. Only flickers and glimpses, mostly from Nagini's perspective. The pain of the attempts had been agonizing and eventually he had given up. He had collapsed in pain and distress on the sitting room floor. He had been sure that eventually someone would come to tell him he had sent Snape to his death.
He hadn't wanted to discuss any of it with Sirius. His mind had just sort of drifted. He wasn't even sure how long they had sat in the kitchen for.
Ignoring Remus's question, he asked his own.
"How are Tim and Malfoy?" Harry asked softly.
Remus gave him a tight smile.
"They'll be okay." Remus said softly.
Harry nodded, no one ever wanted to give him information. He supposed it was enough that they were alive.
"Harry, Sirius says you've been pretty quiet the whole time he's been here. Can you tell me what's going on." Remus asked.
Harry shrugged.
"I'm fine." Harry dismissed.
Remus gave him a disbelieving look.
"I just feel guilty. I sent Snape into danger. I saw what was happening and I couldn't do anything to help. Tim's parents are dead." Harry whispered.
Remus sighed.
"Harry, I'm sorry you had to see that. No one should see what you see. There wasn't anything you could do though. Severus is fine. The boys will heal. You did what you were supposed to do. You told an adult, and they did what they could." Remus said.
Harry wasn't sure that was true. Surely, he could have done something.
With a sigh he nodded and laid his head down on his folded arms.
"Severus is expected back soon, would you like us to stay?" Remus asked.
Harry shook his head.
"I'm fine, Remus. You look exhausted and I think Sirius is crashing off of a caffeine high. You guys should go rest." Harry mumbled.
There was silence for a moment and Harry let his eyes fall shut.
"Harry, I know you don't want to talk about it, but I need to ask. Are you thinking about hurting yourself?" Remus asked quietly.
Harry sighed and shrugged. The thought had occurred to him. It often did when he was feeling a lot of guilt. However, the feeling had mostly passed now.
"Harry, will you look at me please." Remus said.
Harry pushed himself up and looked at Remus.
"You're not alone, Okay? You are not at fault for this. You're not at fault for this war." Remus said firmly.
Harry looked away from him. He didn't believe any of that. He was alone. The prophecy circled in his mind, and he tried to bury it again. The war wasn't his fault, but it was his job to end it. Every death and injury was on him while Voldemort was still alive.
"I mean it Harry." Remus said.
Harry nodded to appease him.
"If you think you're going to hurt yourself you can reach out. I know everything is very overwhelming right now, but I promise you're not alone." Remus said.
Harry nodded numbly again.
"Sirius is in the sitting room. Would you like to come say goodbye?" Remus asked.
Harry really didn't want to move at all, but he didn't want to hurt Sirius' feelings. Even if he hadn't felt like talking, Sirius being here had been nice.
Harry nodded and stood.
He walked stiffly into the sitting room. Sirius held his arms open, and Harry curled into his chest and received the hug.
"Thanks for coming Siri." Harry whispered into his chest.
"Always pup." Sirius whispered back and kissed his messy hair.
Harry stepped back and looked to Remus. The man looked concerned and also a little awkward. Harry couldn't tell exactly what was wrong.
Sirius sighed.
"Just ask him Rem. He's not going to bite." Sirius said with annoyance.
Harry looked to Sirius in confusion.
When he looked back at Remus, he was blushing and looking at the floor.
Sirius sighed noisily again.
"Harry can Remus have a hug?" Sirius asked in exacerbation.
It was Harry's turn to blush.
Remus wanted a hug? From him? Why? Why was he being so awkward about it? Not that Harry was any less awkward, but Sirius never seemed to hesitate to ask for hugs.
Harry realized that the look on Remus' face wasn't embarrassment but shame, he could see it in his eyes. It clicked for Harry then. Remus was ashamed of his condition. Did he think that Harry cared about such things? Had he taken Harry's partial cure as a sign that Harry couldn't accept him the way he was?
Harry felt anger boil in his chest at the injustice that Remus had faced. At the people who had made Remus feel like he was less.
Remus was one of the kindest and most gentle people Harry had ever met.
Apparently, the anger shined through in his face. He hadn't realized that he was basically glaring at Remus.
"It's okay, Harry. I understand. Sirius shouldn't have said anything." Remus mumbled.
Harry shook his head to clear his mind. He steadied himself and tried to be brave, he could allow this touch to make Remus feel better. He hated himself for needing to feel brave to give a hug, but he let the guilt settle somewhere deep inside him. He could worry about it later.
Harry thought about the hugs that had made him feel better. The ones that had made him feel safe, protected, and loved.
Harry took a few shaky steps towards Remus and quickly wrapped his arms around him. He tightened his grip and held the man close to him.
Remus froze for a moment and then wrapped his arms around Harry. Harry had only ever gotten one hug from Remus, and it was a double hug with Sirius when he'd been upset in the library. This was the first hug that had just been them. Harry burrowed his face into the man's chest and thought of all the memories he had seen in his mind. He knew how much Remus loved him. Even if he wasn't ready to except it, he knew.
Harry started to feel slightly overwhelmed and loosened his grip. Remus' arms dropped away and Harry stepped back.
Harry gave Remus a shy smile before looking down at the floor.
"I didn't want to make you uncomfortable. I…I know that you're not very comfortable with touch…And I…I know my condition is…Well, people tend to avoid contact." Remus said softly.
Harry bit his lip.
"I appreciate you respecting my boundaries. You're right I don't really like touch. But I hope you know it has nothing to do with you. Nothing to do with you being a werewolf. I didn't finish Sirius' research because I couldn't accept who you are. I did it because I know how painful it is. I know how much you suffer…even if you don't say it. I wanted to do something to help…And I wanted to do something to repay you for all the kindness you have shown me. All the help you've given me." Harry said staring at the floor.
"I'm very thankful for what you have done Harry. I'm glad my condition doesn't change the way you see me. Your father was that way. When the marauders found out I think it brought us all closer together, though I feared I'd lose them as friends." Remus said.
"I will always help you Harry, no matter what. I don't expect anything in return. You're my son and I love you. I would do anything for you." Remus added.
Harry's cheeks felt warm, and he kept staring at the floor. It was probably coming off as horribly rude, but he just couldn't bring himself to look at Remus. He didn't understand doing something for nothing. His life had never worked that way and he was hesitant to accept it. He was glad that Remus was happy about the potion.
Harry ground the toe of his trainer into the carpet and nodded.
"Call us if you need anything Harry." Remus said softly.
Harry nodded.
"Bye Harry." Sirius said.
"Bye." Harry responded.
Then a moment later they were gone, and Harry was alone again.
Harry fidgeted for a long moment. His previous exhaustion had vanished and had been replaced with anxiety. Giving Remus a hug had felt like the right thing to do in that moment. The man had done a lot for him. However, now, he felt disgusting. Maybe allowing Sirius and Remus to hug him had been the wrong choice. He was too dirty to touch. It hadn't been the kind gesture he had meant it to be. It had been spreading his freakishness. He needed to stop allowing himself to think he was any better than that.
He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. He needed a shower.
Without further thought he trudged up the stairs and showered. When he was done, he dressed and shifted his appearance back to boy-who-lived. Snape hadn't commented on his appearance, but he felt better with the mask in place. He felt exposed and wanted to hide away.
He quickly cleaned up his room and fed Edgar who had apparently gone back to sleep on his bed.
He still felt fidgety when he was done. He decided he would do some cleaning downstairs. It was the least he could do after Snape had taken care of him for the last three days. He was sure the man was exhausted. He had still been in his day clothes when Harry had stumbled into the hall in the middle of the night.
He decided he would cook them lunch and get the house cleaned up. Hopefully, they could just have a quiet afternoon.
Severus sat next to Draco's bed waiting for the boy to wake up and for Albus to return.
"Mum." Draco mumbled before sitting bolt upright.
Draco hissed and clutched his side before looking around wildly.
"Draco." Severus called.
Draco's head snapped around. His silver eyes met Severus onyx ones and they both just stared for a moment.
Severus wondered if the boy would yell at him or hit him or attempt to curse him. Severus was thankful he'd stashed the boy's wand in his robes just in case.
Unexpectedly Draco leaned towards him and wrapped his arms around Severus' neck. Severus was shocked for a moment. Not only was that not the response he had expected, he also could hardly remember the last time the boy had hugged him. He was sure it was before he had come to Hogwarts.
Severus wrapped his arms around Draco and patted him soothingly on the back, being mindful of where his ribs had been injured.
"I'm so sorry." Draco muttered.
"It's okay." Severus reassured him though he wasn't sure what the boy was apologizing for.
A moment later Draco pulled away and wiped his face. His cheeks were red, but Severus didn't comment.
"I didn't want the mark." Draco said flatly looking across the wing at the long windows.
Severus pursed his lips and nodded. His was a permanent reminder of his failures. What would Draco's mean if it had been done against his will?
"I'm sorry." Severus said softly.
Draco just shrugged numbly.
"Are…are my mother and father dead?" Draco asked quietly.
Severus sighed.
"I don't know. They weren't at the safehouse. I'm not sure if they remained at the manor or went somewhere else." Severus said.
Draco's head turned and he gave Severus a confused look.
"Safehouse?" Draco asked.
Severus pinched the bridge of his nose. Did the boy not know?
"They have been spying for Dumbledore. He gave them portkeys to a safehouse. I take it you were not informed." Severus said.
Severus could see the anger and hurt in his eyes.
Draco shook his head and looked away.
"I've barely spoken to them all summer." Draco said.
"I'm sorry, Draco. I don't know what to say. I don't know why you weren't told." Severus said softly.
His mind supplied that it was almost certainly Albus.
Severus thoughts had apparently summoned the man as the Hospital wing doors swung open at that moment.
Albus approached the bed and thankfully kept his face neutral. His snakes had come to call him a smiling loon, since the man seemed to smile at moments that didn't seem to fit the situation.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Malfoy." Albus said.
Draco nodded and averted his gaze.
"Good afternoon, sir." Draco said quietly.
"I don't suppose you could tell me what happened last night?" Albus asked.
Severus sighed. As much as he wished he could tell the man to go away, that the boy had only just woken up, he did understand why he needed to know.
Draco nodded and began to retell what had happened. From the marking, to the torture, to saving his classmate. Severus was proud of Draco's bravery. Not only had he defied orders and attempted to soothe the pain that the muggles had suffered. He'd attacked a room full of Death eaters with the Dark Lord present. Then he had saved the young boy.
It was truly Griffindorish behavior, but he knew the boy's heart was in the right place.
Albus nodded and stroked his beard.
"That was very courageous of you Mr. Malfoy. Mr. Heart has you to thank for his life. I appreciate the information you have shared." Albus said.
Draco shrugged and nodded a little.
"I don't suppose you have any of your things on you?" Severus asked.
It would be another thing to address.
Draco blushed and nodded.
"I was going to run away last night. I didn't expect it to go like that, but I was prepared to leave…. I know it's cowardly but, I couldn't stay there any longer." Draco said staring down at the blanket in his lap.
Severus shook his head.
"You were not a coward Draco. It was very brave what you did. And even before you left the way you did it would not have been cowardly. It is self-preservation. It is a strong Slytherin trait. You did good Draco." Severus reassured giving the boy's shoulder a gentle pat.
"Why don't you go take a shower and get dressed. You'll be coming to stay with me for the time being." Severus instructed.
Draco raised his head and looked at Severus.
"You aren't staying here in the castle?" Draco asked.
Severus shook his head.
"No. I have a home. It may not be up to your normal standards but will make do." Severus said stiffly.
His home was a tent compared to Malfoy manor but as he said, they would make do.
Draco nodded and climbed off the bed. He winced slightly at the movement.
"You had several severely broken ribs. They will be tender for a few days.
Draco nodded and headed to the restroom.
Draco was feeling more himself as he followed Severus through the castle. The shower had relaxed some of his muscles and given him a chance to clear his mind. The pain potion he had been given had nearly taken away all of the lingering tenderness in his ribs.
The headmaster was expected to come to the house shortly to add on a room. That did not bode well for the size of the place, though Draco didn't honestly mind. As long as the house wasn't swarming with Death Eaters it would be an improvement on his previous situation.
"I need to collect a few things from my quarters and then we will floo to my house." Severus said as he laid his hand on a wall in the dungeon. Draco knew that the wall hid the door to Severus' private rooms. He had visited often over the years. Severus tried to remind him that it was a privilege that he could lose. He was allowed in because he was Severus' godson but if he didn't behave or told others the privilege would be revoked.
Draco had never said anything to his friends. They knew Severus was his godfather, but they all assumed he met with him in his office just like the rest of the house.
Draco followed Severus in and closed the door gently behind him.
"Make yourself at home. I'll just be a minute." Severus called as he disappeared into the door to his private lab.
Draco sat in the armchair he usually took. The rooms didn't look any different than they had the last time he was here. It was comforting. He wondered if the man's house was as full of books as his school quarters.
Severus returned with a huff and several jars in his hands. He muttered something under his breath and walked to his room. When he returned, he had a bag in his hand.
"All right. The address is Spinner's End. I would appreciate it if you did not share that with anyone else. Very few people know where I live." Severus said sternly.
Draco nodded. He would never share something private like that. Especially now. He was going to have a safe place to stay. Telling his friends would be gambling his own safety as well as Severus's.
"Good" Severus said with a nod and held out the pot of floo powder.
Draco took a pinch and threw it in.
"Spinner's End." Draco said clearly before stepping into the flames.
Draco stepped out gracefully into a room not unlike the one he had just left. It was even set up the same way. Two armchairs, a couch in the middle, and walls covered in more books then one person could read in a lifetime. The furniture was a little more worn down but even the smell was similar.
Draco smirked. He could smell food cooking. Perhaps his godfather was hiding more then he thought.
The floo flared and Severus stepped out.
A look crossed Severus face that Draco couldn't place. Something close to concern before his face went blank.
"Come Draco." Severus said as he made his way out of the sitting room.
"I feel like I'm learning all kinds of new things about you. Are there little Snapes running around here?" Draco joked.
Severus snorted.
"I suppose not. You're not exactly kid friendly. Perhaps just a cute girl to keep you company." Draco added with a smirk, as he followed Severus into what appeared to be the kitchen.
Draco stopped short when he saw Potter scrubbing the floor.
The shock faded quickly, and Draco smirked again.
"Well Potter certainly wasn't who I was expecting to see on their knees in your house." Draco sneered.
Potter's face drained of color, and he flicked an alarmed look at Severus.
"Lunch is ready. I'll just be going." Potter muttered as he banished the cleaning supplies and attempted to make his way around them.
"Playing House elf Potter? Severus have a nice broom cupboard for you to stay in?" Draco jibed.
Potter looked at the floor and shuffled out the door.
"Bye, Potty." Draco said with false sweetness.
Draco turned and looked at Snape with a smile only to find anger clear on the man's face.
His brows scrunched.
"You will learn to hold your tongue." Severus said sweeping further into the room.
Draco shook his head in confusion.
"I get why you switched side Sev, but you can't tell me your secretly part of the Harry Potter fan club." Draco said incredulously.
Severus spun around and pinned him with a hard glare.
"Potter is currently a guest in this house, just like you are. You will be respectful, or you will be spending the rest of your holiday scrubbing cauldrons." Severus growled.
Draco took a step back.
With a sigh he glared back at Severus.
"Why is he here?" Draco demanded.
Severus mouth became a thin line reminding him of McGonagall.
"He is here for the same reason you are. He needed a place to be." Severus said.
Draco raised an eyebrow hoping there was more of an explanation. When none was forthcoming his shoulders slumped.
"Sit. Eat. I will be back in a moment." Severus said before sweeping out of the room.
Draco stood frozen to the spot for a minute before he scoffed and pulled out a chair. He flopped down and looked at the meal in the middle of the table. He didn't have much of an appetite. He wouldn't disregard Severus orders though. Quickly he dished up some food and dug in.
The last day had been so confusing and upsetting. Finding out that Potter was staying here was just the cherry on top.
Severus stopped at the top of the stairs. He rubbed his face. Draco's careless remarks might have been just about the worst things he could have said. Why couldn't he have insulted him for being a Gryffindor or for his fame? Instead, he had to make a crass innuendo about Potter being on his knees. Then that barb about him staying in a cupboard.
Severus wondered if the tentative trust he had gotten from the boy would be enough to smooth this over.
With a sigh Severus walked to Harry's closed bedroom door and knocked.
The door creaked open, and Severus pushed it open further.
Severus noticed all of Harry's things had been packed up and the bed was made. Harry stood on the far side of the bed near the window with his bag on his shoulders and the little kitten cradled to his chest.
Harry was steadfastly looking at the ground.
"Is he staying?" Harry asked quietly.
Severus sighed.
"Yes, He's…" Severus started before Harry interrupted.
"Your godson. I understand." Harry mumbled.
Severus raised a questioning eyebrow.
Harry's eyes flicked to his and then away.
"Mary told me." Harry said softly.
Severus rolled his eyes and groaned.
"Of course she did. Nosey old woman." Severus grumbled.
Harry shifted a little foot to foot and then cleared his throat.
"I'm just going to go." Harry said, heading towards the door.
"Harry." Severus called.
Harry looked back briefly then away again. He seemed to be struggling to keep even the pretense of eye contact.
"You don't need to leave. In fact, I need you to stay. At least for a little while. The headmaster will be here shortly to add another room and he has requested to speak with you." Severus said.
Harry sighed and nodded.
"You can stay, Harry. What I said last night hasn't changed. You and…Edgar can stay here." Severus said softly.
Harry shook his head.
"I'm not sure that's a good idea, sir." Harry said.
Severus tended to agree, but he worried about the boy getting worse if he went back to the Sundown. He had been doing well there but this week had changed things.
"I don't want you to be uncomfortable but I'm not sure you will be able to stay away without Albus finding out. Draco has a tendency to be a bit of a tattle tale if I'm honest. And the headmaster intends to check in frequently." Severus said.
Harry turned now and faced him though his eyes still looked wary.
"I can't make excuses for Draco. What he said was rude and I've warned him that if he isn't polite, he'll be spending the rest of the holiday in the lab scrubbing cauldrons." Severus assured.
Harry blushed and looked away.
"I know about your cupboard. I saw the locks and the marks on the inside. I swear to you Harry I will never lock you up. Draco is just upset and is lashing out. He has had a rather rough night. I know you have as well." Severus explained.
Harry gave him an alarmed look when he mentioned the cupboard. Then nodded about the long night.
"How often did they lock you in there?" Severus asked gently. It wasn't something he had planned on discussing today. However, it was something he was curious about. He didn't know when the topic might come up naturally again.
Harry ducked his head and mumbled something.
"I can't here you, I'm sorry." Severus said, taking a step closer. Though Harry immediately took a step away.
"Until I was eleven it was my room." Harry said barely above a whisper.
Severus just stared at him.
He had spent ten years locked in a cupboard. How? Why?
"They um…locked me in every night…and um…when I was in trouble. Sometimes for days at a time." Harry added quietly.
Severus sighed and closed his eyes. The cruelty those people had shown Harry was horrific.
"I'm sorry." Severus said quietly, unsure what else there was to say.
Harry just shrugged.
He walked back to his bed and shed his bag onto the floor. He then kicked off his shoes and settled the kitten in his lap.
"Will you tell me why you were upset before I returned?" Severus asked.
Harry gave him a questioning look.
Severus raised his eyebrow in response.
"You only clean like that when you're upset. I could smell the bleach the moment I stepped out of the floo." Severus responded.
Harry seemed to deflate even more.
"I wasn't doing really well when Sirius showed up. I was worried about…well, I was worried about you." Harry admitted.
Severus felt a warm glow in his chest at that admittance.
"Did having Black here not alleviate your anxiety?" Severus asked.
Harry just shrugged. Severus could see some other emotion in Harry's eyes, but couldn't place it.
"I was just cleaning to keep my mind occupied." Harry dismissed.
Severus didn't believe him but let the subject drop.
He wanted to address Draco's other comment, though the subject was definitely more sensitive. Harry already seemed overwhelmed and exhausted, although his breathing sounded better.
"Draco's first comment was disrespectful. I hope you know he was just making a joke. Unfortunately, at both of our expense." Severus hedged.
Harry's whole face drained of color except for a bright blush high on his cheeks. His hands began to fidget despite the kitten nudging at him.
"Harry." Severus called softly.
Wide green eyes met his. Severus hated the fear that was in them.
"We don't have to talk about it now but know that I'm always here if you wish to talk." Severus said earnestly.
Harry nodded and shrugged a little before looking back to his lap and petting the kitten.
"Thank you for making lunch. I appreciate it. Would you like to join us?" Severus asked after a moment.
Harry shook his head and Severus sighed.
"You need to eat. Would you like me to bring you a plate?" Severus asked.
Once again Harry shook his head.
"I'll eat later. I don't have much of an appetite at the moment." Harry nearly whispered.
Severus hesitated for a moment. He was at a loss for words. He wished he could make things better for the boy.
Finally, he nodded.
"Very well. I'll call you down when the headmaster arrives." Severus said, before taking his leave.
Draco had finished his meal and was just sitting in his chair thinking over everything that happened. He wondered if he could get a message to one of his friends.
With a sigh he shook his head. It didn't matter that he had escaped. Messaging them would only put them in danger.
He looked around the old kitchen and wondered where Severus had disappeared to. He didn't mind being on his own, but the chair was hard, and he would prefer to settle in. He wouldn't, however, go wandering around the house. He may be missing information about Severus now but, he did know the man was private and snooping would surely lead to punishment.
Severus swept into the room a moment later and took a seat across from him. He didn't even look up or acknowledge that there was someone else sitting at the table. It was rude but Draco let it slide. They'd had a long night.
"The headmaster will be here shortly. Once your room is created, I expect you to settle in while the headmaster and I speak with Harry." Severus said glancing up from his plate.
Draco nodded, although he wanted to roll his eyes at the special treatment that Potter always got. Draco was the one who had been through hell this summer. What could the headmaster need to talk to Potter about?
"When Albus leaves we will be discussing rules and expectations while you are residing here. Then I recommend you rest until dinner. Your ribs are mostly healed but you should still rest." Severus explained.
Draco groaned. He didn't want to listen to a long-winded lecture about house rules. He wasn't some first year.
Severus glared at him, and Draco sighed.
"Yes, Sir." Draco answered.
Severus finished his meal and cleaned his plate before he began to put away the leftover food.
"You will be responsible for your own clean up. I have no house elves and I will not be cleaning up after you." Severus said with a pointed look at the plate and glass still sitting in front of Draco.
Draco sighed and stood.
"Can't catch a break today." Draco grumbled under his breath as he walked to the sink.
"You were rescued from torture and murder at the hands of Death Eaters. You were healed for hours by two people who thankfully for you had experience with healing as Madam Pomfrey wasn't available. I think you have 'Caught several break's today', Draco." Severus growled.
"Do not be ungrateful for the situation you find yourself in. It may not be what you want but it is better than the alternative." Severus added.
Draco dropped his head in shame. He hadn't meant to be ungrateful.
"I'm sorry. I am grateful for what you have done for me." Draco said as he turned on the tap and washed his dishes. It was a strange experience. He'd never done it before. His only experience with scrubbing was cauldrons in Severus' detentions.
Then a thought occurred to him that hadn't earlier. How had Severus saved him? How had he known to come? He had been nearly in the exact spot Draco had entered the woods. How had he known where to be?
The question was out of his mouth without a second thought.
"How did you know to come for me?"
Draco heard a sigh and glanced over his shoulder to see Severus rubbing at his temples.
"I'm not able to tell you at this time. Perhaps later I can explain." Severus answered.
Draco's shoulders slumped. That was not really an answer.
Draco set the dishes in the drainer and turned to Severus. The man looked worried and exhausted. Draco wondered what his summer had been like since he had been found out as a spy.
He went to open his mouth and attempt some small talk when he heard the floo flare.
"Come along Draco." Severus said.
Draco nodded.
As they made their way down the hall there was the sound of the floo flaring again and Draco wondered who else had arrived.
When they stepped into the sitting room Draco found not only Dumbledore but also Professor McGonagall.
There were polite greetings and then an awkward silence seemed to hang over them.
"I'm not sure where to add another room." Severus said.
Dumbledore stroked his beard and seemed to be considering.
"I would recommend we add it close to the other bedrooms." Dumbledore said.
Severus nodded and they made their way up a set of stairs.
Draco noticed there were three doors on this floor.
When they reached a stretch of blank wall Severus nodded.
Dumbledore nodded and raised his wand. Draco watched in fascination as a door appeared. A moment later McGonagall opened it and inside appeared to be a small, boxy room. It was a fraction of his old room, but he supposed it would do.
McGonagall retrieved some items from her pocket and began waving her wand. Soon there was a small bed and a dresser as well as a desk. They were not the quality he was used to but again he supposed they would work.
"Thank you." Severus said.
Draco bit his lip and wondered if it would be rude to ask them to make the bed slightly bigger. He had gone through quite the growth spurt over the summer and didn't think the small bed would be very comfortable.
"Something wrong, my boy?" Dumbledore asked. Draco looked up at the old man and blushed slightly. He'd never really spoken with the headmaster. His presence seemed more imposing at this distance.
"Um… Nothing, sir." Draco said looking away from the old man.
"Now's the time to speak up Draco. I have limited transfiguration skills." Severus drawled.
Draco bit his lip again and nodded.
"Um…could you make the bed a little bigger?" Draco asked.
"Please." He tacked on after a moment.
Dumbledore smiled at him.
"Of course. A growing boy needs room to stretch out." Dumbledore said with a nod.
With a flick of his wand the bed grew a bit.
"Will that do?" Dumbledore asked.
Draco nodded and smiled a little, though it was more of an anxious reflex. The man was putting him on edge.
"Yes, sir. Thank you." Draco answered.
Dumbledore nodded and sent Draco a smile.
"Unpack Draco. I will come for you when we are done." Severus said giving his shoulder a squeeze.
The action relaxed Draco slightly. This all felt so strange. Having the familiar action of reassurance helped.
Severus led Dumbledor and McGonagall from his room and shut the door. With a sigh he retrieved his trunk from his pocket and resized it before settling in.
"I think this conversation will be more comfortable in the sitting room. Go ahead down. I'll be down with Potter in a moment." Severus said as they walked down the hall.
"Do you mind if I make some tea, Severus?" Minerva asked.
"That's fine." Severus said stopping in front of Harry's door.
Albus and Minerva disappeared down the stairs and Severus turned and knocked on the door.
The door clicked open, and Severus stepped inside. Harry was right where he had left him, sitting on the bed with the cat in his lap.
"Are you ready to come down?" Severus asked.
Harry's shoulders slumped before he nodded, resignation evident on his face.
He set the cat on his bed and pulled his shoes before nodding at Severus.
When they reached the sitting room Harry walked in and stood awkwardly near the armchair. Severus wanted to sigh. The boy had been making improvements but somehow this one just never seemed to improve.
Severus caught Harry's eyes and looked pointedly at the chair as he walked to his own seat.
Harry blushed and sat down.
They sat in silence for a few moments before Albus finally broke the silence.
"Mr. Potter, do you think you can explain what you saw last night?" Albus asked.
Harry fidgeted for a moment before he nodded.
"Voldemort was really happy last night. I think that's why I saw what I did. It's always the big emotions that seem to draw me in. They um…There were more Death Eater's in the Manor then what I normally see. They um brought Malfoy…um Draco in and Voldemort told him that his task needed to be done by a Death Eater. That they were going to mark him as one…" Harry started.
Harry's hands twisted.
"Do um…Do you know what his task is?" Harry asked softly sending glances at the headmaster.
Albus settled back on the couch, looking like the picture of calm. He nodded and Harry's shoulders slumped in what appeared like relief.
Severus was sure the knowledge had been weighing on the boy. Telling someone there was a plan to kill them was a lot.
"They um…Malfoy's parents held his arm, and another Death Eater held his shoulders. I…I think Goyle." Harry said.
Albus nodded.
"He um marked Malfoy's arm and then they brought out a woman…They um." Harry said, starting to get choked up.
Severus could only imagine the torture the boy had been forced to watch.
"They cursed her until she passed out, I think. Then um…They killed her." Harry said barely above a whisper.
"Then there was a man. He yelled but it pretty much went the same. They were Tim's parents." Harry said softly.
"Then they dragged Tim out. He was fighting. Malfoy walked up to him… Voldemort thought he was going to kill him but instead he cast fire at a bunch of the Death Eaters and took off with Tim. Voldemort sent some people after them. He was so angry. Voldemort followed them to the door. I could see where they were headed. That's when I woke up and told Professor Snape." Harry explained while he fiddled with the sleeves of his shirt.
Severus knew it must have been a difficult thing to watch. He was slightly concerned with the specific fidgeting though. Harry usually played with the hem of his shirt or just twisted his hands together. He had seen the sleeve fidgeting with other students that had a history of self-harm and wondered if Harry had hurt himself in his absence or if he was considering it.
He would keep an eye on the boy and perhaps have a word with Lupin.
"Thank you, Harry." Albus said quietly.
"Poor Mr. Heart. He's been moved to a safehouse for now. I will visit in a few days. I wasn't aware you knew him." Minerva chimed in.
Harry nodded and a sad look crossed his face.
"He is friends with Dennis. He tagged along for several of the DA meetings last year. He's smart. We didn't have any other first years. Dennis had been the youngest student. Mostly the others were teaching him spells the rest of us learned first year. He picked them up quick." Harry said softly, pain evident on his face.
Severus understood that pain. He was also the boy's teacher and knew that he was a bright young man. He wondered if Harry also saw him as his student.
"Um…Professor Dumbledore, could you tell me how the others are doing?" Harry asked hesitantly.
Severus sighed, from what he had gathered all three students had sustained serious injuries, which was why Poppy had been staying there.
Albus nodded.
"They are healing." Albus said, leaving Harry in the dark. Severus wondered what the reason was for the headmaster to be so vague.
He caught Minerva's eye, who also looked confused. Severus decided he would tell Harry later about his friends. There was no reason to leave him unaware.
Albus turned to speak to Severus.
"There still haven't been any signs of the Malfoy's. I fear they may not have made it out of the Manor." Albus said quietly.
Severus' brows creased in concern as he thought about his godson.
"They left." Harry said softly.
All eyes once again fell on the boy.
Severus sat forward slightly in intrigue.
"You saw them?" Severus asked.
Harry nodded.
Severus sighed in relief.
"Did they leave before Draco ran away?" Albus inquired.
To Severus surprise Harry averted his eyes from the group and blushed. What had the boy done?
"No." Harry said softly.
"How do you know they left?" Albus inquired.
Harry stared at his lap for a long moment. Severus could feel his irritation at the situation rising.
"I…I cleared my mind and forced myself back into his mind…. After Professor Snape left." Harry said barely above a whisper.
All three adults looked shocked at that answer.
Severus could feel his blood pressure rising as the anger threatened to take over. He stood and stalked to the middle of the room.
"What did you just say?" Severus hissed.
Harry curled in on himself a little and Severus could see the boy shaking slightly.
"Severus." Minerva admonished.
"No. The boy should be afraid. He has no idea the danger he has put himself in." Severus snapped.
"Do you have any idea how dangerous that could have been. Why on earth would you try and enter his mind?!" Severus seethed.
Harry's eyes met his and the fire of defiance shone in them.
Severus took half a step back.
Harry stood from his seat with his hands clenched at his sides.
"You! You dumb git! I was worried about you! Last time you were around the Death Eaters they nearly killed you! I didn't want to think I'd sent you to your death!" Harry yelled.
Severus took a step back from the unexpected yelling.
Harry turned to look at Albus and Minerva.
"I wasn't seeing things from Voldemort's eyes. It was from Nagini. I saw them disappear. I think with a portkey but I'm not sure." Harry said as calmly as he could, though the tension in his body had him shaking in anger.
"I think they were okay. They looked a little roughed up but fine." Harry added.
He then turned to Severus.
"I laid in here for hours waiting to find out if I had killed you. No word, no nothing." Harry growled.
Severus felt horrible. The boy had not made a desirable choice. However, He was clearly more upset by the whole situation then he'd initially let on. No wonder the boy had been obsessively cleaning the house when he returned. Though he thought there was probably still more going on.
"Is there anything else Headmaster?" Harry asked with an exhausted tone.
"No, my boy." Albus answered sadly.
Harry nodded and spun on his heels. Severus expected to hear his feet on the stairs but instead heard the front door open and close softly. Even with all the anger the boy was feeling, he was still polite. Had Severus been that angry he certainly would have slammed the door.
Severus sighed and ran his hands through his hair. This was a mess. He wondered if the boy would even return. He'd been set on leaving earlier but seemed to have possibly changed his mind. Now though he wasn't sure.
"The boy has too big of a heart for the cruelty of war." Albus said softly.
Severus spun and glared at the old man.
"Yes, Albus, He's a child." Severus growled.
Albus conceded with a nod.
"I'm not sure there is much more that needs discussing today. I will leave you to your charges. I hope for all of your sakes that the summer will begin to settle down." Albus said, standing and brushing his robes down.
Severus also wished that the summer would calm down but given the new addition he was sure things were only going to become more difficult.
Minerva stood and gave Severus a disapproving look.
He knew he had overreacted. It was a mistake to yell at the boy like that. Especially while he was towering over him.
"We will come to the school on Friday for dueling lessons." Severus said.
Albus and Minerva both nodded and headed to the floo.
Harry had shifted his appearance as he had walked out of the house. He was so angry. He knew it was dangerous. He knew looking into Voldemort's mind was a risk but what was he supposed to do? Just sit there and wait?
Harry sighed, he just needed to get away from Snape and Malfoy and the house for a while.
When he reached the shopping area of town, he considered his options. He had his bag in his pocket and was strongly considering just going back to the Sundown like he had told Snape he was going to do. However, where would that leave Edgar? The little kitten was probably still asleep on his bed and Snape had said he wasn't keeping the cat if Harry wasn't there.
The thought of returning the cat to the park or taking him to Julie broke his heart. He sighed. He would have to return. Not for a few hours though. He would spend what was left of the day out and return before dark, like he was supposed to.
After a quick trip to his room at the Sundown to collect the rest of his belongings he checked out of his room. Maggie gave him a questioning look but didn't push for answers for which he was thankful.
He then went to the art supply store and bought a new sketch pad. His first one was full, and he wanted to keep drawing. He had found it was a wonderful outlet for his emotions.
He debated what to do next. He thought about going to the grocery and working for a few hours but honestly, he just didn't have the energy for it. He wasn't sick any longer, but he thought his body was still probably healing.
He decided to pop into the pet store and get some treats for Edgar. Julie had been happy to see him, and he had told her that he was keeping the kitten. She had smiled brightly at him and recommended the most popular treats and toys. When he had collected enough things to spoil the kitten with, he paid and promised to bring the cat in the next time he came by.
He stood in front of the book nook for a long moment debating if he wanted to go in. He had finished the books she had given him and wanted to get a few new ones. He still had a lot of informational books that were just waiting for him in his trunk, but he liked having the comfort of a story to read.
He shifted back and forth on his feet before deciding he would go in. Perhaps he could just relax in the quiet little shop for a while. It was so comforting.
Harry pushed the door open and was pleased to find Mary deep in a book in one of the armchairs.
"Hello Max." Mary said with a smile.
Harry smiled back.
"Feeling better?" She asked.
"Yes, Ma'am." Harry answered softly.
Mary hummed a little.
"You still look a little peaky. We're slow today. Why don't you find something to read and join me." Mary said.
Harry smiled and nodded.
This would be a perfect way to spend the rest of his day.
Draco stared at the blank ceiling in his room. He didn't know what to do with himself. He had tried to work on his summer assignments but just couldn't focus. Then he'd let his practice snitch fly around for a while and when that only succeeded to make him dizzy as it raced around the small room, he had put it away.
Severus hadn't come up to speak with him like he had said he would. Honestly, it was probably for the best. He wasn't sure he could focus on anything right now.
The room was beginning to turn a golden color as the sun set. The color reminded him of the fire he had cast at the Death Eaters. He wondered if he had killed any of them. Had he hurt his parents?
He didn't know. It was all unknown. He hated this uncertainty.
He groaned and flopped his arm over his eyes. When he had agreed to come stay with Severus he hadn't expected to be staying with Potter as well. What the hell was he doing here anyway? Surely, he should be at home or with the Weasley's.
Perhaps Potter had gotten in trouble and staying with the potion master was his punishment. Though if that was the case, he was sure it would be a punishment for Severus as well. He'd not expected his godfather to stand up for the Gryffindor. It was all so strange. He was sure he could put the pieces together if his mind didn't feel so bogged down. For now, he only hoped that dinner would be soon and that he would be allowed to return to his room after for some sleep.
Severus stood over the stove making dinner. He had gone to the lab to cool off after Albus and Minerva had left. He had brewed a few simple potions to occupy himself but mostly he had thought about what Harry had said.
The boy had been worried about him. It was a strange concept. Although he had said it earlier, seeing the hurt and anger in the boy's eyes when he had yelled had really solidified his point.
Severus was also astonished that the boy had been able to activate the connection between himself and the Dark Lord. It wasn't good but it was interesting. He also wondered about Harry's ability to see through the snakes' eyes. How was that possible?
Severus knew that several of his visions had been from that point of view, but why? And how?
Now he was waiting. Harry hadn't called like he had when he was staying at the Sundown and he had yet to return, though it was still a little light out.
Edgar meowed and rubbed between his legs. The cat was very affectionate and despite his previous statement, he decided he would allow the cat to stay regardless of Potter being here.
Severus smiled at the little fluffball.
"I know you smell the fish, but you can't have any. I won't be responsible for teaching you to beg." Severus drawled.
Severus glanced at the clock again. It was getting late. He thought back to his brief conversation with Lupin.
He had called Lupin before he had started dinner. He explained the argument as well as his observations of Harry. Lupin had looked exhausted but also sad. He explained that Harry had admitted to having some thoughts of hurting himself today but as far as he was aware the boy hadn't.
Severus had explained that he thought the boy might not return tonight. Lupin had suggested that he wait to see and if Harry had checked in or come back by dark. If there was still nothing by then, Severus would go looking for him.
Lupin had expressed a lot of concern but ultimately, he had agreed with Severus. What Harry had done was dangerous and there needed to be a conversation about it.
Perhaps a discussion about his safety in general.
Just as the last rays of sun disappeared from the sky, Severus heard the front door creak open and shut softly.
Severus sighed in relief.
There was a soft clicking noise from the hall and the cat that had seemed attached to him for the last hour darted away. He heard a soft mew from the hall and then murmured words from the boy. The sound of footsteps up the stairs followed.
When Severus had placed the food on the table and set it for three, he trudged up the stairs. When he got to the top, he debated which door to knock on first.
With a sigh he approached Draco's door. He knocked and waited. There was muffled sounds and then the door swung open. His godson's hair was messy, and his face was nearly as pale as it had been earlier. He looked exhausted. Perhaps he should have checked in earlier.
"Are you feeling alright?" Severus asked quietly.
Draco shrugged.
"Fine, just tired." Draco said blandly.
Severus nodded.
"Very well. Dinner is on the table. I'd like to have a short conversation after dinner then you may go to bed." Severus said.
Draco nodded before stepping out of his room and pulling the door closed behind him.
Severus stepped back down the hall to Harry's door. Once again, he knocked and waited.
Harry opened the door but did not meet his eye.
"Sorry about earlier." Harry mumbled.
Severus sighed. They would still need to talk but he appreciated that Harry was taking some accountability.
"I forgive you. Please come down. It's dinner time." Severus said.
Harry's eyes warily flicked to Draco.
"We're all going to be living together. You'll need to learn to tolerate one another." Severus said loud enough for both boys to hear.
Harry nodded and Severus turned and headed back down the stairs and was pleased to hear two sets of feet following him and no other sounds. He'd hoped turning his back on them wouldn't result in insults or hexes being thrown.
Once everyone was seated Severus filled his plate and watched a strange dynamic form. Draco served himself next. He had been raised to wait for the head of the house to get there food first if it did not appear from a house elf. Harry waited for both of them to be finished as he had been raised that he was only intitled to whatever was left after everyone was finished.
He supposed as long as everyone got enough to eat, the order they were served didn't much matter.
Dinner was a silent affair only broken by the clink of silverware and occasionally the clearing of a throat or a glass being set gently back on the table. The tension was painful.
To Severus' surprise it was Harry who broke the silence.
"Um… Thank you Malfoy. For saving Tim." Harry said quietly, glancing up to Draco who had stopped eating when Harry had started talking.
Draco stared at him with a blank face for a long moment before nodding and going back to his meal.
Severus just wanted the meal to be over.
When plates were empty Harry popped up like he always did and started collecting the dishes. Draco shot him a glare but said nothing. Severus wasn't sure how to manage this situation. He had informed Draco he would be in charge of cleaning up after himself and didn't want the boy to think Harry should be cleaning for him. However, it didn't make sense for them both to wash. Perhaps a chore chart of sorts would keep things balanced.
"Draco please join me in the sitting room." Severus said as he stood from the table.
Draco stood.
"Harry please join us when you are finished." Severus added before sweeping out of the kitchen.
Severus was able to run a quick diagnostic on Draco to confirm he was just exhausted before Harry joined them in the sitting room.
Draco sat in a relaxed position on the couch. His head was tipped back slightly resting on the back of the couch. His legs were stretched out in front of him and crossed at the ankle. Severus was sure the boy would fall asleep like that if they didn't start soon.
Harry hesitated slightly as he always did coming into the sitting room. Severus nodded to the chair across from him. Harry sat and Severus cleared his throat.
"I know that this situation is not ideal for either of you. However, this will be the situation for the time being. You will be respectful of me, my house and one another while we are all here." Severus said, meeting each of the boy's eyes.
They nodded before he continued.
"I expect you to each clean up after yourselves, However I will create a schedule to make sure house chores are evenly broken up."
At this Draco gave him an appalled look and Harry just shrugged.
Severus continued before Draco could say anything.
"You are expected to be in this house for all the hours that it is dark outside. This is for your safety. If you leave before I am up, but the sun is up, you will leave a note in the kitchen. You will be respectful of the people in this town."
"Draco, you should be aware this is a muggle town. You will not perform magic outside of this house. You will do your best to blend in." Severus said.
"Really Sev, you think I want to spend time in some muggle town. What would I even do?" Draco scoffed.
Severus pinched his nose. His godson still had a long way to go.
"There are several shops in town including a book shop. Perhaps you could inform yourself on muggles. I suspect you may have discovered that what you were raised to believe isn't as accurate as you may have thought." Severus said coldly.
Draco blushed and averted his gaze.
"I will not tolerate any magic used against anyone in this house. You will keep your comments to one another respectful. You will keep your hands to yourself. If I find out about any childish brawling or hexing, you will be punished." Severus said sternly.
Once both boys had nodded, he continued.
"We will be going to Hogwarts on Friday for training. We leave after breakfast and will likely return late in the day. Be prepared for Friday to be lessons." Severus added.
Harry nodded and gave him an exacerbated expression. Severus knew he knew the rules but reiterating them felt like the right thing to do. Draco raised an interested eyebrow, but his face remained hesitant. Severus wondered what he was worried about. Perhaps if he stayed in the house tomorrow, he would attempt to talk with him.
"Very well. You both need your rest. Off to bed." Severus said, dismissing them.
Once he had heard the shuffling upstairs stop without any alarming sounds he relaxed back in his chair and summoned his firewhiskey.
Six weeks until term, he kept trying to remind himself. It was less than six weeks. They could get through this.
Severus wondered how he had managed to find himself in this position.
He took a sip of his firewhisky and tipped his head back, closing his eyes.
Just six weeks.
