Jacob was looking forward to getting off school. It was a rather long day during his classes. He always strove to learn well and pay attention as he normally would but today was not one of the good days. He was rather restless.
Today was the day his mother swore to him that she and him would spend good quality time together. She would make up for not being around for the show they were going to watch. She would order pizza, and not only would they watch their show, but they would play some of his favorite board games together. She made doubly sure that everything was done at the Police Department. Every bit of paperwork was up to date. All current on-duty officers were assigned and going about their duty and any matter was settled. She would not be gone this time.
The Boy wanted school to end as quickly as possible but the time for each class seemed to pass at the pace of a turtle's speed. He kept an eye more on the clock than his work and sometimes getting a lecture from a teacher to pay attention and its important. The Lectures made him the tease of many students as he was supposed to be one of their best students and now he was becoming a target by the teachers.
It didn't end there in class as when one class finally came to an end the short time between classes only gave him more misery as the word about the teachers getting on his case were quickly moving around the lips of the other students.
Many of the students mocked him. Pointed and laughed because he got in trouble. Jacob simply just ignored them as he would gather what needed for the next class from his locker. He shut his and tried to think of something to keep his mind off of all the teasing. He would not retort as he was only by himself. He really had no friends in school to back him up in all of it which is why he just allowed them to continue to make fun of him.
But the teasing about the trouble he got into with the teachers didn't end there. Some did know that he was the son of the Police Chief. Some would think such a thing would claim he is entitled. Being the son of the Chief, herself could mean he could have anything he desires and get what he wants.
With that many students would deny him a lot. When it finally came to lunch many of them grabbed all the good edible foods that were offered leaving him with the not-so-great edibles left. Instead of a burger or a good ham sandwich he was left to get near tasteless soup and only a bottle of water instead of chocolate milk.
No one would sit near him at the table that was left in the cafeteria and he ate alone. At least he tried to eat his soup, but the tasteless colored water was hard to even down a spoon of it. He was able to eat around half of it before he tossed it away along with the empty bottle of water that was far more delectable than the soup itself.
When Recess came he hardly indulged himself on any of the playsets upon the playground. While many children all laughed and played and used all sets on the playground he sat on a bench alone. All the teasing and the less than decent lunch had taken the energy to even play out of him. Even if he was in an active mood no one would ask him to play with them anyway. There was no point in it. It made it all the clearer when no one even came up to ask him if he was even alright. Not even some of the teachers that were out there keeping an eye on the students to make sure they were not getting into any trouble while recess was on.
Classes continued when the bell had rung as it meant recess was over and it was time for everyone to return back inside and head to their next class. Jacob was the first to make it back inside and he quickly gathered the right books and materials he needed and made it into class before the next bunch of students could tease him again.
This time he tried to pay much more attention to the days lessons and not look at the clock. Even though he kept his eyes focused on the teacher who drew out what they were teaching upon the chalkboard his mind was elsewhere. All that he could think about was spending time with his mother. After so long with her being so busy with work today was going to be a better day after school was over.
The Next bunch of classes couldn't pass by quickly enough. Every lesson that was given Jacob did his best on. He wasn't going to end this day with more lectures by the teachers. He carried on a lot better through his classes and finally just when he thought the day was going to keep on going the final bell rang ending the school day and when that happened everyone dashed out of the class and headed for their lockers to put all their books and school supplies away.
Jacob was the fastest of all the students. He now was only a short time away from having a day that would be far better than it was in class. He gathered his backpack grateful that he didn't have homework to take home. He was ready to spend the rest of the day with his mother.
He practically stormed onto the bus immediately sitting down and tried not to demand to the bus driver to get him home fast. He shook with eagerness as the day was going to be great for sure now. After a rather long bus ride he finally was dropped off at his house and standing right at the front door was his mother in her uniform. She had just gotten off work herself and she had a great smile on her face.
"Mom!" He called over to her as she waved at him as he ran over to her. She got down to one knee and embraced her young son. She was so glad to see him home.
"Hello, Sweety. Have a good day?" She asked.
"Not especially." Jacob admitted holding his mother tight as she was a much welcome sight to him after such a long day.
His Mother giggled. "Well perhaps we can turn it into something better." She implied.
"I can't wait, mom!" Jacob smiled as his mother released him from the hug and lead him into the house.
"Go put your backpack away I ordered the pizza." His Mother told him, and he immediately did what he was told. He dashed upstairs and immediately threw his backpack into his room. He twitched and ran in place as he was happy. His mother really seemed this time she was going to stay for this. If the Pizza was already ordered then that meant nothing could tear her away now.
It even was all the more better when he looked out through his window to see a car drive up near the driveway and upon the hood of the vehicle was the logo of the Pizza Restaurant she ordered from. His mouth drooled at the anticipation of having fresh pizza to bite on. It would certainly make up from the poor excuse of a lunch he had back at school.
He immediately ran back down the stairs to just see his mother open the door for the delivery man. He pulled out two pizza boxes where the contents within them were fresh as steam rose from the boxes. Jacob smacked his lips as the pizza smelled amazing.
"Come put these on the table, please." His Mother asked her son as he immediately grabbed the pizza boxes from the delivery man and put them on the nearby table in the dining room setting them both aside from each other. He opened up both the boxes to see the pizzas within. One with only plain cheese while the other had pepperoni on it.
"Oh, boy!" Jacob laughed becoming more hyped by looking at the freshly made pizza. He clapped and rubbed his hands together in anticipation. As much as he wanted to grab a slice and begin eating he was waiting for his mother.
She just had paid the delivery man and gave a more than decent tip for his service. She retrieved two plates from the kitchen bringing them over to the table. She took a slice of cheese pizza while he gathered one with pepperoni on it.
"Shall we then?" His mother asked as she sat down on a chair at the table while, Jacob sat next to him. He and his Mother both lifted up their pizza slices and were about to eat and start off their time together as was promised by her but just before they each could take a bite his mothers cell phone rung stopping them both.
"Oh, for the love of…" His Mother grumbled as she had thought everything was settled at work. She was certain of it. If someone had called her from the department of something minor she would be quite angry. Putting her slice back on the plate she picked up the phone from her pocket while, Jacob ate his slice moaning at the taste of the cheesy contents with the added flavor of the pepperoni. Normally he would be concerned with his mother on the phone but after she had promised him this day together he wasn't worried.
"Hello? Chief Owensworth." His Mother answered the phone. "What's going on now?"
"Officer Bria should be able to handle that?" She scoffed as it seemed she was called on for something minor.
"Look I am trying to have a…what?" She tried to dissuade until something was spoken to her that caught her attention. "What are the reports?"
Jacob continued eating his pizza slice nearly getting down to the crust as he listened to his mother. And he wasn't liking it as her voice was becoming serious.
His Mother stood up from the table distraught keeping her phone against her ear. "The Situation is that bad?" She gasped.
"How many officers are in the vicinity right now?" She asked putting a hand on the table in disbelieve. Of all times something like this was going to happen it had to be on a day she was going to spend some real time with her son. She knew this would be hard to explain to him.
"Alright…I understand. Ill call the officials and get them on it." She ended the phoned call putting the phone on the table and looked down sadly.
"Mother? What's wrong?" Jacob asked seeing how upset she was.
"Jacob…" She looked at him with a sorrowful look." …I am sorry but I gotta go."
"Go?! But why?" Jacob almost threw his chair back dropping the crust remains of the slice as it almost fell off the side of his plate.
"I was told there are some strange sightings around the city. And not only that but a gang of unknown thugs have taken over a warehouse and are trying to steal crates and take them off through the docks. Already some of my officers are on the scene but cannot engage without proper support. I have to go to coordinate the efforts." His Mother explained as she put her phone back in her pocket.
"But mom you promised!" Jacob retorted not believing what he was hearing.
"I know I did. But this takes precedence." His Mother told him as she was to head for the door but, Jacob grabbed her hand.
"No, it doesn't! You promised me! You can't just leave! Have someone do your job!" Jacob shouted not going to allow his mother to leave yet again.
She sighed in sadness and frustration turning around kneeing to his eye level holding onto his shoulders. "Look! I am the chief, son! Its my duty to carry out orders from the officials and protect this city! Its up to me to safeguard it and right now they need me out there! I am truly sorry. I will make this up to you."
Jacob immediately knew this was going now were. He looked down feeling so angry and sad. "You always say that." He said lowly.
"Again, I am sorry. But I have to leave now. I'll be back before you know it." She vowed before kissing his forehead standing back up and headed out through the front door. Jacob went to the window to see her enter their family S.U.V and turned it on before backing up out of the driveway and drive off down the road towards the city at great speed turning on a pair of red and blue flashing lights.
Jacob moaned while sniffling. This was supposed to be the day he and his mother were going to have so much fun together. She promised him. But it seemed every promise she ever makes always is for not. Every single time he thought she would spend time with him something always came up. Her job kept her away. She wouldn't do anything other than go right back to the city and do her job.
Having said she would be back before he would know it always was a fib. When she goes it would be so long before she returns. He would be in bed before then. He went back to the table looking the pizza that still steamed from the boxes. At first he was ready to devour every slice of it all but now his appetite was lost.
Jacob couldn't stand this anymore. Everything he ever wanted was not going to be most assuring now. What was supposed to be grand day to make up for a bad one only made it all the more worse. He needed solace somewhere else other than the house. The Sight of the pizza that was losing its warmth and the empty table where a couple of board games in their boxes sat on near it only reminded him of yet another broken promise.
He left the house through one of the two back doors and headed through the empty back yard. In a big tree in the corner of his home stood a tree house that was only a short climb up a set of boards that were nailed onto a tree making it into a ladder.
Jacob climbed up the ladder up to the treehouse as it held some happy memories that seemed to be the best place to escape to. He climbed through the hatch at the floor of the treehouse and looked around it before climbing through it and shut the hatch. He saw a small and rather dirty looking couch sitting at one side of the house facing a window that overlooked the yard and house. All around tiny figurines and toys hung about. Empty jars and cups hung on tiny shelves but on another shelf that sat alone on another side was a picture frame that had three people in it. A Man a woman and a child on all sitting together in the very couch of the treehouse all with happy smiles on it.
Jacob crawled over to the picture and picked it up from the shelf. It was a picture with himself and his mother and father. A Year before the incident which took the life of his father and changed his mother they were all together. A Happy family. The very Treehouse he stood in was made by his father. Jacob helped him sometimes and on occasion his mother would lend a hand. Though his father did most of the work he said it was their project and it was their little retreat from the house.
The young boy felt tears come to his eyes seeing the picture in his hands. A Time when they were all together and as happy as they could be and now it was all gone. There was no hope. His father was killed, and his mother is always gone and giving empty promises. He would be miserable for the rest of his life he believed.
Throwing the picture outside the window in frustration Jacob then turned over planting his face and arms on the couch and cried. Nothing would make him happy again. The Good times of his family were gone for good.
But Jacob didn't realize that the amulet on his necklace began to glow. His Tears were felt by someone majestical. His whimpers could be heard as a figure a blue dress with a pointed hat sparkled into existence upon the very couch where, Jacob was crying.
Suddenly something felt off about the couch to Jacob. He felt as if he was laying something made of silk instead of dirty cloth. Then he could feel a hand stroking his hair.
"There there, child." A Soft feminine voice cooed compassionately. "Stay your tears as sadness does not behold a youthful young one such as yourself."
Jacob opened his eyes to see a woman that looked elderly with white hair and purple sash tied into a bow wrapped around her neck.
He fell backwards in fright of the appearance of the woman. The Elderly woman smiled down at him. "Fret not, dear. I won't hurt you."
"Who…who are you?" Jacob asked wondering who this mysterious intruder was and how did she get in the treehouse he could have sworn he was crying on a plain couch and no one was on it just then.
"Why I am your fairy godmother, child." She introduced keeping smile as she offered him her hand. Jacob hesitantly reached out to her she gently pulled him up to her and sat him down next to her.
"Fairy godmother?" He inquired.
"Yes." She confirmed. "Why does one such as you cry with such loss?"
Jacob looked away sadly. "Because there is no hope anymore. Mom is always gone and never around. My Father is long dead. There is nothing for me to be happy about."
"I don't believe in such folly. There always is. For you're a special, little boy." The Fairy Godmother informed playfully rubbing the side of his cheeks.
"No. I'm not!" The Boy shook his head but then a bright light appeared just outside the window and blinking into existence three new female figures came to appear to, Jacob's shock as the Fairy Godmother smiled as three that popped into view were good friends of hers.
One wore a red dress with a pointed hat who looked to be less aged than the fairy godmother. Another wore a green dress with a pointed hat who was same age as the first and the third wore a blue dress with a pointed hate but what set them apart from the one that sat by, Jacob was they had a pair of small wings on their backs, and they were floating in the air with the use of them.
"What are you all?" Jacob asked in complete disbelieve at what he was seeing.
"I am Flora." The One in red introduced.
"I am Fauna." The One in green introduced.
"And I am Merryweather." The third one in green introduced lastly.
"We are the three good fairies, darling." Flora explained with all three giving the giving the boy kind smiles as he sat in complete shock he looked back and forth at the four figures that were around him.
"This cannot be!" He gasped hardly knowing where to look. Fairy's and godmothers. Figures of folk lore and in books. They are real!
"This certainly can be, young boy." Merryweather chuckled.
"What's going on here?" Was all that Jacob could ask.
"We are here to remind you do not lose faith. Many grand adventures and trials await you." Fauna explained.
"Your special in many ways, young Jacob. What you carry upon you holds many a miracle." Flora pointed at the necklace he wore. He held upheld it in his hand as it glowed lowly but to his amazement it never did that before.
"What does it mean?" He inquired.
"There is much for you to learn and so much for you to see. You come to find out in due time." Merryweather smiled.
"Indeed, little one." The Fairy Godmother giggled as she stroked his hair. "Now dry your tears and remember that we shall be watching over you." She then moved her hand downwards in front of him creating a wand that sparkled to his amazement.
"And keep your chin up. Times may be trying but miracles are never dying. Bibbity bobbity boo!" She waved the wand in front of him and appearing in his hand was the very picture he just threw out of the window.
Jacob looked at the picture completely astonished the picture that should have shattered on impact was given back to him completely anew. "How did…" He then noticed that the four women were gone. All that was left where they were sparkles that soon faded in moments. He couldn't have imagined it as it was all too real.
Looking at the picture in his hand again. He looked a tear but not a sad one but one of hope renewed as he hugged the picture into his chest. Perhaps something will change in the future that will make everything right. He didn't know if it could be by the apparent magic of those four women or an actual miracle, but his heart was renewed and at the moment he was glad to know someone was there for him in his most dire moment.
For the rest of the day the young man carried it on with a smile. Somehow seeing those four extraordinary women made him feel hope again. He enjoyed the cold pizza and the programs on Tv without so much as a sad thought again. He enjoyed the time on his own until it became late, and he would retire to sleep.
Brushing his teeth and donning his pajama's he went to bed. But something waved over his head as tiny sparkles moved over him like millions of stars twinkling and a soft melody was heard, and it helped him fall asleep as a caring hand brushed his before vanishing in a light flash.
It was Friday now as Jacob had already gone to school having mysteriously a full breakfast awaiting him when he got up and dressed and retrieved his backpack. Bacon, eggs and toast with orange juice were left for him but the kitchen was not touched, and his mother already was at work again. The Meal was delectable, and he wished he could thank the one who made it for him before getting on the bus to school.
Since it was a Friday classes were simple and relatively easy. With the renewed confidence and hope in him, Jacob got through them without much stress and after recess his class was going on a trip through town. With crime thankfully very low and with the recent successes of the local law enforcement things were safe again to go on trips and today they were going to local park in town where many statues stood in place from man to animal that artists had sculpted and crafted through the cities history that were placed there in honor of them.
Jacob was glad to be going a trip to the park of the city. It was certainly a lot better than going to class and maybe it was just what he needed to keep his mood lightened up.
The Bus carried he and the rest of his classmates through town as it was filled with sunshine and people walked through the streets in bright moods. It was Friday and all were looking forward to get through the day and soon begin the weekend.
Soon enough they made it to the park where the chaperone was the first to get off the bus and every student soon followed her. Jacob was the last to depart from the bus and he was in a much better mood today. He was out in the city which was rare for him to be. Given to his mother's strictness and crime was once so bad just crossing the street was a risk. But now everything was better.
Perhaps he did owe the efforts of the clean and upkept streets to his mother with her policies for the Police Department and had a vague understanding of why she wasn't always home and leaving on days when she should have had off, but it still bothered him that she couldn't find another way around it for her to be home more but right now he could enjoy the sights of the park and the surrounding skyscrapers.
But little did Jacob know that while marveled at the sights while following close behind the rest of the students as the chaperone took them through the park a woman driving a two seated long hooded red car drive up to the street that the bus was parked at driving and parking behind it.
The Woman wore black dress with a cream-colored fur coat over it. She peered out the right side of her car where the driver's seat was. She caught a glimpse of Jacob and noticed the amulet on the necklace he wore.
"About time I found you sniveling little brat." She snickered as she stepped out of the car in her red heeled shoes. "Just have to take lovely looking necklace." She quietly stepped towards, Jacob trying not to look suspicious as there were dozens of people going about their business. She would have to make this subtle and take the necklace. It would be easy children are always so simple to distract.
While she was continuing to follow the group of students keeping a short distance from them to not alert them another figure was watching the group. A Rat wearing a tuxedo that hid in the shadows of a bush near a statue eyed the amulet that, Jacob was wearing.
"Well, well, seems my sources were not mistaken." He chuckled evilly twiddling his fingers as he gave, Jacob a dark look. "Just have to wait for the right moment." The Rat stayed in place as acting too soon would ruin months of searching and if he messed this up it would take a long time again and he was not a patient one.
The fur coated woman watched as Jacob stopped just behind the rest of the students as the chaperone was facing a statue and was busy describing it to notice that one of her students was about to be grabbed.
"Now I have you, you little…" She did not finish what she said as something grabbed on the back of her coat. "What gives?" She turned to see a dalmatian dog growling as it bit down hard on her coat and pulled her back.
"Stop it!" She demanded but the dog wouldn't give as it continued to growl and tug. Then another dalmatian ran up to her left and jumped on her tackling her to the ground. "You wretched coated cretins!" She screamed in anger as the dogs wrestled over her that now had gained the attention of many around who all ran to the aid of the woman.
Jacob had dropped his bag in the commotion as the students and chaperone were interrupted when they saw the scene of a woman being attacked by two dalmatians. Right when people began to get close the dogs stopped their attack and ran off before they could be grabbed.
The Woman who was attacked all swiped at those that tried to assist her as she got back up to her feet in an angry huff. "Those blasted little!" She swung her fist in frustration but accidently hit one of the people nearby and to her humiliating shock it happened to be an officer.
The Moment he was struck the officer immediately grabbed her and turned her around slapping a pair of cuffs on her. She demanded to be released but the officer told her she was under arrest for an unlawful strike upon a law enforcement and read her rights as he dragged off to his squad car.
"Well, there's a highlight of day." Jacob chuckled to himself as the day out was more eventual than he first thought it would be. But something about that lady he saw being hauled off didn't seem right. Oddly suspicious the way she was outfitted as no one in the city wore anything like hers, but he simply brushed off the thought and picked up his back pack unaware that it now had someone occupying it.
"I should send my thanks to coated goon of a lady but then again she is unlikely to return my gesture. Much more easier for me! Far more simple than the Big Ben Caper." The Rat laughed quietly as he laid back and got comfortable. But as the boy walked along with his group his books and packed snacks all fall over the rat pushing him and crushing him under neath the heavy weighted text books.
"Not my choice of a chariot." He grumbled adjusting his now messed tuxedo. "Hopefully, this blasted little school trip will be over. Soon I will have the amulet and all the credit will be mine and all riches and all of mousedom will bow before me as I, Ratigan the greatest criminal mind will finally have it all!" He laughed manically as he sat on the textbooks in the backpack hating each time the backpack jolted about.
"This certainly is not going to be an enjoyable ride." He snorted laying back wishing he had at least something strong to drink to take his mind off the worse ride he had since the dirigible that he crashed into a clock tower which then led to his unfortunate demise at the hands of his most hated enemy.
