"This looks really great pop."
Almost everyone had finished with the meal, meanwhile Eddie had only picked at hers the whole time. Henry gave his two cents.
"You've hardly touched your chili. You love my chili."
Eddie nodded and continued picking at her chili in the bowl.
"I'm just not that hungry pop. All I want is my baby back."
Pop nodded and did his best to give her comforting words.
"You'll get Megan back sweet girl. That's a promise."
Eddie was trying to be strong, but she knew she couldn't keep everything bottled up. She was a Reagan now. But by marriage only. Not by blood. She didn't want to be one of them. She wanted to be her own person.
"I appreciate everything you guys are doing for me, really I do. But I need to deal with this on my own terms. My baby is out there somewhere, and Jamie and I need to be walking the neighborhoods and knocking on doors."
Frank softened at Eddie's tone.
"There's an Amber alert out on every outlet possible. We'll find her Eddie."
Eddie pushed back her half-eaten bowl of chili and shook her head.
"That's just it dad, I can't be just sitting here and waiting for a phone call saying she's been found, or I get the other call with worse news. We all know that every minute she's out there and not found, the trail gets colder."
Jamie put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her towards him slightly.
"Babe, take a breath. It's going to be ok. We're all here for you."
Eddie felt her walls crumbling around her. She felt her bottom lip tremble, but she wouldn't let her tears fall, not in front of the rest of the family. Erin looked over at Eddie and hoped her words would bring her some comfort.
"Eddie I can't begin to understand what you're going through right now, but just know, mother to mother, if I were in your shoes, I would be combing every borough and knocking on every door in this city to get my baby back. Mother to mother, I have your back. But on a professional note, and as a representative of the DA's office, I can't officially have your back on this."
Feeling her nose flare, Eddie untangled herself from Jamie's arms and pulled her half-eaten bowl of chili towards her and finished it off. Plastering a smile on her face she looked to Henry.
"So, what's for desert pop?"
Jamie reached for Eddie's hand under the table and squeezed it.
"We're all here for you Ed. We'll get through this."
Eddie turned onto her left side in the bed her and Jamie shared and took his arms and wrapped them around her waist.
"Thanks for having my back at dinner tonight bub. The family too. I know you guys are doing your best to help me get through and process all this. I won't stop until we get out baby back bub. Just know that."
Jamie wrapped his arms around her a little more and felt a few tears slip down his cheeks. He gently kissed the back of her neck trying to block out the images from the video surveillance footage that were burned into his brain permanently.
"I wish I'd been there to stop what happened to you babe. I should've just left the paperwork for another day. It could've waited. I could've come and got you from here."
Eddie shook her head and let some tears of her own fall down.
"I don't even know what she looks like. I only heard her crying. Jamie? What if she's cold? It was raining… The night she was… Born…"
Jamie kissed the back of Eddie's neck one more time and cleared his throat.
"We can't think like that babe. She's going to come back to us safe and healthy."
"Let's get you another blanket sweetie. There. Is that better?"
The woman in the gray hoodie and matching sweatpants became startled as she heard a voice behind her.
"There's a warming shelter two blocks up where you and your baby can stay for the night."
Gray hoodie woman looked away from the bright flashlight and then saw a police officer with kind eyes.
"We're ok. Really."
The officers with the kind eyes became concerned when he saw the woman slump slightly.
"Look, you need medical attention. Let me call a bus for you."
Gray hoodie woman shook her head no, but the officer with the kind eyes held out his card and gave her a smile.
"Here's my card. If you ever need help. Call that number on the back of that card."
The woman who held the whimpering baby nodded but bolted. The officer with the kind eyes gave chase, his partner behind him yelling his name.
"Reagan wait!"
But he kept running and almost caught up with the woman and the baby. But he lost her in a crowd of people walking through Times Square. Out of breath, his partner looked at him.
"Where'd she go Joe?"
Joe Reagan shook his head and looked his partner in the eye.
"I lost her Freddie. That baby needs to be somewhere warm. She may also be the woman who took my niece."
