Chapter eleven:
"Sans?" Papyrus pops his head into his brothers lab. "Are you in here?" He glances around at first not spotting his brother. He does notice that there is a machine with what seems to be an open door. He is pretty sure that it was covered with a sheet before. He heads further inside curious about it all. He gasps as soon as he gets around the table set up. "Sans!" He rushes to his brother who is laying unconscious in the machine. He checks him.
Sans.
1HP
Unconscious.
Papyrus lets out a breath at least glad that Sans isn't hurt. He just tries to figure out why his brother would just be knocked out cold. He scoops his brother up into his arms. "I'll get you upstairs and get Alphys to check on you." He promises leaving the lab taking the secret path into the house. He shakes his head at the mess in Sans's room when he comes in through the hidden entrance. He heads to his room laying Sans on his bed before moving away to call Alphys. He wants her opinion on all of this.
If it was some sort of lab accident then Alphys will know what to do.
...
Sans feels like he's floating in some abyss. He swears that the whispers sound closer than they ever have before. He finds they quiet down, and one becomes loud enough to be talking volume.
"Hey. Can you hear me? Open your eyes."
Sans groans a little and his feet feel like he's standing on something now. He blinks open his eyes at first finding his vision blurry before focusing. He finds himself facing a skeleton that seems familiar yet he can't name. He also sees that he is in the space he goes through when he's changing personas yet it's quieter now.
The skeleton in front of him lets out a breath of relief. "Oh my goodness!" He grins happily at seeing that Sans can see him. "It actually worked! I almost can't believe it!"
"You left that note?" Sans blinks and the other nods his head. "Sorry but I think your name has slipped my mind. Or are we both Sans? I think Alphys said something about multiple personalities."
A look of understanding comes across the others face. "Oh. Right. Your brain must still be feeling a little fried from everything. Well I guess our brain in a way." He chuckles as Sans swears that he isn't making sense. "I'll explain. Call me Dream. We all use nicknames to help so it doesn't get confusing." He turns around. "Come. Let me explain as we walk." He walks with Sans walking next to him.
Sans is all too curious about all of this.
"Your magic connects you to all of us." Dream begins his explanation. "Your soul produces too much magic that it makes you not as normal as other monsters. Hence as Alphys puts it you have multiple personality disorder." He glances to Sans meeting his eyes as the other looks to him.
"So. Any of my personas are all just in my head. Caused by my high magic levels?" Sans asks and Dream slightly glances away.
"It's a bit complicated." Dream lets out a breath. "However if we can cut your connection to us we might be able to make you more normal."
"Hold on." Sans wants to know more before he goes into any of that. "Tell me more about what you know of how my... I guess our brain works."
"Okay." Dream agrees making Sans surprised that it was that easy. "I will tell you what I know." He takes a breath and looks ahead despite it seeming like this path leads nowhere. "There are multiple other versions of yourself here. They see the world through different eyes as if it is their own world. Despite them traveling your own world physically. Which is okay since the layout of the underground doesn't usually change. Just how it looks can change. For certain amounts of time you basically see various different universes. With me being one who manages to remain unaffected when in control. So I control your body but don't forget that I'm in your body, and that I am able to see your world as it is. I manage this because of my soul which is special. It manages to help me hold onto everything."
"So my magic is strong enough to be able to see into other worlds." Sans hums thinking that he understands. "And I see the world as if looking at their world. Yet it's not actually real so I see and hear those in my world yet register them in my head as if they're from another world." He glances down to his hands. "Wow. Who knew I held that much power in my tiny body." He clenches his hands into fists. "So I just need to work on control and maybe I can control it."
"I'm not done." Dream's words cause Sans to turn back to looking at him. He continued as they stop to stand by each other. His eyes not even glancing at the skeleton next to him. "It's not as simple as that. As your other personalities emerged your brain couldn't think of them as you. Yet they looked like you. Your mind needed something to cling to as the reason. Thus the various personas saw things as if they were in another world. Your mind created these so called other realities that only your personas could see. I have a special soul because I was your first persona." He lets out a breath. "As you grew older your magic grew stronger which made you form more personas. You even made personas you only became once then never again. Even those who were pure evil since your curiosity about everything mixed with knowing right from wrong. So many were made because your magic is wild. It has spikes that you can't control which messes with your mind. Bringing forth your personas depending on where your magic spike leads. The real you seems lazy because all the craziness makes you so tired."
Sans almost wants to say that all of this is crazy. He gets this feeling in his soul that maybe he should listen. "Then what am I supposed to do?" He blinks at Dream truly feeling lost.
"You need to cut your ties with us." Dream places a hand on Sans's shoulder. "It is easier said than done. I believe that your magic will only continue to grow until personas stop working. You'll likely have a whole break down wrecking a lot of havoc and death. Your magic bursting out in one big blast attack before you give up your life. I want to change that. I want to save such things from happening to the only real world. Will you do this? Giving up your personas in order to protect the world you live in?"
Sans isn't really sure what to say. He kind of wants to say yes. He however also wonders what his body is supposed to do once the personas are gone. He swears that surely they were made to channel all of his magic into something. So what would happen to him when that outlet is gone? He really isn't sure whether or not he should agree.
Dream almost seems to not make much sense yet at the same time make total sense.
Sans is so confused. His mind starting to race as he tries to figure out what to do. He finally decides to ask Dream. "But what will happen to my magic spikes without the personas?"
Dream shifts on his feet. "It won't be easy at first. Your body will need to learn to adapt to your magic without your personas. Once you get it under control in your own way without your personas you can be more normal. What do you say?"
Sans has a feeling that Dream isn't telling him something. "What are you hiding?"
Dream is quiet for a few moments before sighing. "There is a chance that doing this could also put you in a coma. But you have to understand that it's for the best. Your body and mind can only take so much and if your magic grows... Well it could be a huge disaster. Please understand that the risk is worth it to save those in your world."
Sans feels like the decision just became a lot harder. Is he really ready to risk such a thing?
