Haley snuggled deeper and deeper into her pillow as the harsh light behind her tried to wake her up. By her pounding headache, Haley surmised that she was definitely hungover. She scolded herself as she promised not to drink last night, in fear of acting too much like Taylor.
She threw her pillow over her head to act as the only escape from the suns rays. Haley was just about ready to settle back into dreamworld, when she felt an arm slink around her torso.
Her eyes sprung open immediately and sat upright in her bed. Except this wasn't her bed. This wasn't even her room. It had been far too big and clutter free to be her room. And last time she checked her bedroom did not overlook the beach.
Fearing the worst, Haley turned her head to check if there was indeed a man in bed with her. She clocked his shirtless back first before she even realized that she was completely nude under the sheets. How had she not noticed sooner?
Feeling exposed, she gathered the sheets and quickly covered herself. Haley gently grabbed the man's wrist not to wake him and placed his arm at his side rather than her stomach.
What had happened last night?
Haley leaned back with her thoughts trying to retrace her steps. She was working a shift at the café when Lucas asked her to go to a party with him. They went to the party together, but Lucas had left without her. The pieces were beginning to click for Haley as she continued onward. The next thing she remembered was waiting for her cab out on the pier, but it never showed up. Then Nathan suddenly appeared and...
Oh god, she thought.
Clutching the sheets tight to her chest, she peered over at the man, whose face was turned the opposite direction. She had a sneaking suspicion who laid beside her and once confirmed, her stomach dropped.
Haley tried to make sense of how they got into this predicament. Nathan had seen her on the pier. They talked. He offered her the guest bedroom and promised to drive her home in the morning. They then went to the beach and drank an insane amount of vodka. That's when he kissed her. And she kissed back. Next thing she knew she was in bed with the guy.
The place was a mess. Aside from the askew bedsheets, their clothes were thrown haphazardly around the room. Nathan's shirt hung on the corner of the flat screen TV while Haley's bra spun around slowly on the ceiling fan. Obviously, they had been in a hurry.
"I'm never drinking again," Haley muttered, ashamed of her actions. This was not how she expected her first sexual experience to go.
Haley wanted to wait until she was in love with a guy, or preferably married. And then it was supposed to be a loving and sweet moment between two individuals, not a drunken moment mixed with lust and teenage hormones.
"Now where's the fun in that," Nathan yawned, rolling onto his back to smirk at Haley.
He had not expected last night to go so well in his favor. Not only did he get laid, several times in fact, but it was with Haley James. He thought it would take a month at least, but if he'd known she'd give it up so easily, then he would have tried to get her drunk sooner.
"What the hell happened last night?" Haley asked. How had she'd let this get so out of hand. She hated Nathan Scott and now she was in bed with him. It didn't add up.
"I think you know," Nathan said cockily as he brought his arms up over his head to stretch.
Haley scowled at Nathan. She was about to let him have it when a silver object caught the corner of her eye. Turning her head slightly, she gasped at the sight.
Taking the sheet off the bed and wrapping herself completely, she held onto the front of her makeshift dress as she ran to the camcorder which had been facing the bed. "Please tell me this wasn't on," Haley begged.
"But then that would be lying," Nathan replied. Haley groaned. This day was just getting better. "And if I remember correctly you were the one asking for it. I didn't realize you were so kinky. It's kind of hot, Hales."
"Don't call me that," Haley told him.
"Hales? You said you liked when I call you that. And you definitely didn't have a problem with me saying it last night. Over and over again," Nathan stressed the last part while Haley shuddered. "If you don't believe me you can check the tape."
Haley went to open the camcorder to retrieve the tape and hopefully destroy it, but found it was nowhere to be seen. She looked all around the base of the recording device and it still wasn't there. "Where's the tape?" Haley demanded.
"You mean this tape?" Nathan pulled the tape out from under the bed. It was his parent's camcorder and he didn't want them to catch his little home video. After Haley fell asleep, he grabbed the tape and hid it underneath his bed.
"Give it to me."
Nathan stood up, completely nude, and waved the tape in front of her face. "You know, I think I might keep this. A souvenir of our time together. I could make you a copy if you want."
Haley kept her eyes looking straightforward, preventing them to fall below his waist. "You're an ass."
"You liked my ass last night." There was a lot of things Haley had liked about him the previous night. The nickname and his butt were only the first two on a long list. Nathan could tell she hated his constant reminders of their time spent together and he was enjoying rubbing it in her face.
"Could you please put some clothes on?"
Nathan stepped closer to Haley and leaned into her ear like he had done so prior. "Why? Am I distracting you?"
Haley wanted to throw up, whether it be from the alcohol or Nathan she did not care. She pushed past Nathan and retrieved her clothes that were scattered across the room. Meanwhile, Nathan had found his boxers at the foot of the bed and slipped them on as Haley changed.
"You still need a ride?" Nathan asked. No matter how the night may have ended, he did promise her that he would drive her home. It was the least he could do.
"I think you've already done enough," Haley spat, slipping on her pants. Her back was turned towards Nathan as she dressed. She just wanted to get out of there and leave.
"I wonder what Lucas is going to think," Nathan commented. Lucas was going to love this. He couldn't wait for Monday's practice. Monday's locker room gossip simply revolved around who had hooked up with who the previous weekend. Lucas' jaw would be on the floor the moment he found out he had sex with Haley.
Haley's heart lurched at the mention of Lucas. How had she forgotten about him during all of this. Oh god, Lucas was going to hate her. He would never forgive her. She slept with the enemy, literally. The guy had been tormenting Lucas for weeks, so Lucas would quit the team.
"You cannot tell Lucas," Haley begged, fully clothed, as she turned to face Nathan.
"Why not?" Nathan questioned.
"It'll kill him," Haley explained. "It will ruin our friendship. Please, I'll do anything." She knew it was a gamble and very much like selling her soul to the devil, but that was a risk she would have to take. Whatever Nathan was offering, she would take. Lucas could never find out about them.
Nathan cocked an eyebrow. "Anything?"
"Within reason," Haley backtracked.
Without missing a beat, Nathan said, "Tutor me."
"What?" Haley hadn't expected it to be so simple, so easy. Honestly, she thought he'd request that have sex again in exchange for his silence. This seemed like a better option but a dangerous one when it came to her relationship with Lucas.
"Listen, I'm close to being ineligible to play basketball, the only thing I'm actually good at. I need you to tutor me to keep my grades up so I can stay on the team." He'd been needing Haley to tutor him anyways, this was the most logical way to convince her - through blackmail.
"I can't...Lucas, would be betrayed." Lucas was already against the idea. How would it look if she went back on her word? He would realize something was up.
"He's betrayed either way," Nathan pointed out. "You either tutor me and Lucas just has to deal with it. Or," Nathan closed the distance between him and Haley. "I tell Lucas that we had sex. Not once. Not twice. But three times. Take your pick." Either way Nathan got what he wanted. He would get a tutor out of Haley and to piss Lucas off or he would just piss Lucas off. Both served his original purpose to get back at Lucas.
Haley pursed her lips and considered her options. "How long do you need a tutor for?"
"Just long enough to get my grades up." Once his grades were decent, he wouldn't need to worry about basketball.
"Monday, at seven in the morning, meet me at the docks."
"I'm sorry about last night," Lucas apologized, leaning over the counter at the café. He felt terrible that her forgot about Haley completely and left her at the party alone. After Nathan's latest stunt, he couldn't stay there. He had to leave.
"It's okay," Haley assured him as she wiped down the counter. While she was pissed at his actions last night, it was replaced with the tremendous amount of guilt she felt for her actions.
"How'd you get home," Lucas asked, popping a grape into his mouth.
"I called a cab," Haley partially lied. It was true, she did leave the beach house in a cab but that was four hours ago rather than twelve. She couldn't stand the thought of being around Nathan anymore than she needed to be. There was no way she would be able to sit in the same car as him with his smug face. Haley wanted to clear her head and get to the café in peace before her shift. "Could I run something by you?"
"Sure."
"I agreed to tutor Nathan," Haley admitted. She wanted Lucas to hear it from her rather than by some random person at school or worse from Nathan himself.
"You're joking, right?" Lucas hoped that that was the case, but the tone of her voice indicated otherwise. He prayed this wasn't happening. When she shook her head no, Lucas blew up. "Why would you do that? The guy has made my life a living hell. Do you know what he did last night?" When Haley didn't respond, he continued on with his rant. "He played a video of my mom and Dan at prom. She thought they were going to have this perfect life together, Haley. And Dan let her believe it! It was humiliating. Not for me, but for her."
Haley's guilt worsened. She had a hunch that Nathan had done something to get under Lucas' skin but never would have guessed that. No wonder Lucas left abruptly. Whenever his mom was concerned, Lucas took it to heart.
"Maybe he'll cut you some slack," Haley suggested. She knew it was unlikely, especially after the prom video, but Nathan needed her and she needed him to keep his mouth shut. If she could convince Lucas that this wasn't a horrible idea, the easier it would be. "I'm the only chance he has to stay on the basketball team. He's not going to risk that."
"Cut me some slack, yeah right," Lucas scoffed. "Would it be the worst thing in the world to let him fail? He would be off the team and out of my hair."
"You know I can't do that. I made on oath." Haley had explained the first time around that she couldn't leave Nathan in the dust. The least she could do was hook him up with Jimmy Edwards for a tutor. Even though it was Nathan they were talking, she couldn't leave any student without help who had been seeking it.
"Hales, you can't be serious."
Haley gulped. That nickname was forever ruined for her in the span of twenty-four hours. She didn't want to ever hear it uttered again.
"I am," Haley asserted. She threw her rag down on the counter and promptly perched her arms there to stare at Lucas. "Look I know you're not happy about this and to be frank, neither am I. Just know I'm doing this for you, Luke."
