~2 Weeks Before Halloween~
Sitting in a café with his girlfriend of nearly a year, Kaname calmly sipped his hot tea as he listened to her chat about her friends and their plans for Halloween. Since they went to different schools, they couldn't meet up as often, so he cherished the time he could spend with her.
They had met purely by chance. Kagome had visited Cross Academy to drop off important documents to the Headmaster, and Kaname had been exiting the dormitory to head to his night classes. What had intrigued him back then, he recalled, was the way she hadn't spared him and his classmates any attention despite being surrounded by the daytime girls that vied for their undivided attention.
Intrigue had quickly morphed into curiosity, fascination, then eventually into the loving adoration it was today. The hard part had been courting Kagome into feeling the same. Back then, she'd been so oblivious and stubborn, Kaname had had to rely on his years of patience before he snapped.
But he also hadn't told her that he was a vampire.
"So," Kagome's sweet voice brought Kaname back to their topic of conversation, "Eri is going to be a princess for Halloween, and she bribed her boyfriend into dressing up as a prince. Yuka is going to be a witch this year, while her boyfriend is going to be a sorcerer. Ayumi wanted to keep things simple since her boyfriend is going to be away with his family, so she's going to be a cowgirl." She released a deep sigh. "At least they know what they're going to be for the Halloween party, but I still have no idea."
Kaname smiled reassuringly. "I'm sure you'll think of something, Kagome. You still have time."
"But it's two weeks away, Kaname. That's not a lot of time to shop for costumes or to even sew one together." She blinked curious amethyst eyes at him. "Now that I think about it, what are you going as? You said you wanted to keep it a secret, but I'm curious."
"Now, now," he soothed, putting his tea down. "You'll see soon enough. You just need a little patience."
The way she puffed her cheeks was adorable. He chuckled, lightly poking one in an affectionate gesture. "But the girls are matching with their boyfriends. How about we do the same? It'll be fun," she cajoled. She smiled at the thought.
Kaname Kuran was the perfect boyfriend. He was handsome, smart, and kind. At first, Kagome hadn't understood why he would choose to romantically pursue her, but he'd convinced her in the end. Their first meeting may have been pure coincidence, but it had been the start of something great. She wouldn't trade him and their relationship for anything.
"Very well," he conceded. "How about I handle your costume then?"
Kagome softly frowned, concerned. "But you're already so busy, especially with student council."
"Nonsense. There currently isn't a lot to do, and the rest can be handled by the other council members." The way he smiled was a little too charming, in her opinion.
"In other words, you're going to abuse your power as the president."
He waved her words away, the smile still glued upon his handsome features. "I would never do such a thing," he denied. Why else would he have a vice president? Kaname had been meaning to give more responsibility to Ichijo anyway. Now was the perfect opportunity.
Kagome lightly chuckled. "Okay, okay," she relented. She was truly curious. She had to wonder what Kaname had planned. He was normally pretty reserved. He definitely acted more mature than other guys his age. "I'll let you handle it. I trust you, Kaname."
Kaname grabbed one of her hands, bringing the appendage close enough to press a tender kiss onto the back of it. He smiled as her heart rate picked up, skipping and thumping within her chest. She blushed prettily.
"Thank you, Kagome. I promise you will be pleased."
And he had just been given an opportunity to reveal his true identity.

~Halloween~
Kaname had kept his promise – not that she didn't believe he would. When Kagome had opened the delivered package to reveal the costume he'd chosen, she'd been stunned. And her curiosity had grown.
Fixing her bangs just-so to complete her look, Kagome couldn't help staring at her reflection. The dress was black, form-fitting, and made of the finest silk. It was strapless with the classic sweetheart neckline. It ended at her ankles, exposing the sexy, strappy heels on her delicate feet. Around her neck, she'd worn a Victorian-style lace choker that had a crimson jewel embedded in the center. To complete the ensemble, she'd done her makeup to match the mysterious, gothic theme Kaname had seemed to choose, with smokey eyeshadow, light blush, and crimson lipstick. Her hair had been straightened and styled into an intricate bun at the nape of her neck with a few tendrils loose to gracefully frame her face.
When she smiled, it discreetly flashed the delicate vampire fangs that had been included with the other accessories. It had been easy to fixate onto her canines and it surprised her how real they appeared. But that was the point, right?
All in all, she felt – and looked – very decadent.
And when Kaname came to pick her up and saw her for the first time, Kagome felt as though all her effort had paid off. His eyes had widened briefly, a stunned expression touching his features. She'd never seen that look on him before, and she had to fight the urge to tease him.
But she couldn't, especially not after she got her first good look at him.
Kaname had always been handsome but tonight he had taken special care with his costume. It was obvious he had chosen to dress as a vampire. To match her outfit, he'd chosen a black, long-sleeved silk dress shirt neatly tucked into a pair of black slacks. Matching dress shoes adorned his feet, his black leather belt holding his outfit perfectly in place. The cape he donned was made from rich fabric, the inside colored a crimson velvet. His hair was lightly slicked back, exposing his flawless features and cinnamon-colored eyes.
Kaname graciously held out one hand, a charming smile curving his mouth. His eyes were warm with affection. "I knew that dress would suit you. You look absolutely beautiful, Kagome," he complimented.
Her cheeks burned with a pleased blush, and she couldn't help her giddy smile. "It's all thanks to you, Kaname," she said. "You look handsome, as always."
"Thank you. Shall we head out?"
Kagome nodded in agreement, accepting the offered hand. The couple started walking towards the awaiting vehicle that would take them to the venue where the Halloween party was being hosted.
"Vampires, huh?" she asked. "That was an interesting choice."
Kaname raised a brow. "How so?"
"I guess it just wasn't something I thought you would choose."
He smiled, exposing a sharp fang. "I think you'll find that I'm still full of surprises," he mysteriously said. "Who knows? Perhaps you'll find out more tonight." He wanted to finally tell her everything. He hadn't meant to keep his secret for this long, regardless.
Kaname was planning to tell Kagome the truth, that his outfit was more than a costume.
He was going to confess to being a pureblooded vampire.
