Starlight Bakery

Loid Forger entered the homey bakery, letting the warm, sweet-smelling atmosphere enter his senses. The air vibrated with the scent of freshly baked goods, both savory and decadent. He'd been staking out the location for nearly two weeks before finally deciding that it was safe to approach.

"Welcome," a beautiful, raven-haired beauty greeted from behind the counter. The smile that curved her lips was gentle, and her amethyst eyes sparkled with purity and a sense of warmth that Loid wasn't accustomed to. It was a stark contrast, considering his line of work.

Loid plastered a smile on his face, wanting to appear kind as part of his undercover disguise. "Hello," he greeted back, nodding in acknowledgment.

"Please take your time and look around. My name is Kagome, so let me know if you need any assistance or have any questions."

"My name is Loid Forger," he offered in return. "Actually, Kagome, I'll take you up on your offer of assistance. You see, I have a young daughter and I wanted to purchase a cake for her."

Amethyst eyes brightened. "Oh, that's so sweet of you, Forger-san," she said. "How old is your daughter, if I may ask?"

It wasn't sweet, he thought. He was buying a cake for Anya due to a sense of guilt the little girl had inspired. It was unlike him. But ever since he'd adopted her as part of his current mission, he couldn't help but feel as though he'd been failing her at every turn.

He was normally so cold and indifferent, doing whatever it took to get the job done. Other people hadn't mattered. Their opinions didn't matter. He didn't care what people thought of him, and it didn't matter what role he had to play. He'd do it. It was as simple as that.

But Anya was different. Somehow, with her unique personality and innocent antics, she was slowly but surely changing him. It was subtle but it was there.

Loid mentally shook himself, his attention returning to Kagome and their current conversation. "Ah, she's six-years-old," he answered.

"Six is such a wonderful age," Kagome commented. "I have a lot of options for girls her age. What flavor did you have in mind?"

He sheepishly chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. "I'm afraid I don't really know what she likes or dislikes. She's not very picky." He assumed it was because she'd grown up in an orphanage, but she wasn't an overly fussy child regardless.

The raven-haired beauty lightly laughed in understanding. "Well, that's good. In that case," she said, gesturing for Loid to follow her, "I have a binder with custom-made cakes. It's basically your all-in-one."

"That sounds exactly like what I need."

Flipping through the options, Loid stopped when he came across a relatively basic white cake with equally white frosting and colorful sprinkles. While there had been more elaborate cakes, he knew Anya would enjoy the cheerful colors.

"I think she would like this one," he said, pointing. Unknowingly, a genuine smile crossed his face, eyes softening. It made him look even more handsome than when he first walked in, and Kagome knew her cheeks were starting to heat with a blush because of it.

She ignored the feeling, mentally shaking it off. She focused on her current task, grabbing a notepad to take notes. "It's a great choice, Forger-san. Confetti cake has become really popular with kids. It's a little on the sweet side, so I try to balance it out with a light frosting. But it's very festive, don't you think?"

"Yes, very festive. Anya will love all the colors."

"Anya?" she curiously asked, tilting her head to the side. "Is that your daughter's name?"

Loid nodded. "Yes, that's correct."

Kagome smiled. "That's a very pretty name. If you would like, I could write it on the cake for her. Or even another message?"

Unexpectedly, he felt his cheeks heat with a faint blush. What kind of message would he want? He shook his head. No, if he were to say anything to Anya, he would be straightforward and say it out loud, to her face. Presenting a cake to the little girl for no special occasion already made him feel embarrassed. This was so out of character for him.

"Ah, no," he replied. "I don't need anything written on the cake. The way it's decorated in the picture is perfect, Kagome."

"No problem, Forger-san."

Loid looked directly into her eyes. "Loid. You may call me Loid."

Oh no. She could feel her blush getting darker. "No problem… Loid," she shyly said. Clearing her throat, she went back to business. She started scribbling on her notepad. "Since this is a custom cake, I'll have it finished in a couple of days. I'll need your best contact information to let you know when it's ready for pick up."

He nodded in understanding. "Sure, that's not a problem." He quickly wrote his number down on her notepad. After they discussed the size of the cake and payment, Loid found himself reluctant to leave. It was strange. There was just something different about Kagome. He couldn't explain it, but he felt a connection with the raven-haired beauty.

I'm being crazy. First Anya, now Kagome? Loid mentally shook his head. What was wrong with him? Maybe this mission was getting to him. He needed to retain his cool and collected head. He couldn't get distracted.

"Thank you for all your help today, Kagome. I'll see you in a couple of days to pick up the confetti cake."

She waved, smiling warmly. "It's no problem at all, Loid. Have a great day!"

As he left, Loid couldn't help the genuine smile that graced his face. But I wouldn't mind if this job required me to be married

Kagome would be the perfect candidate, after all.

Prompt: Confound

Anya stared, wide-eyed, at the woman standing behind the counter. The lady was not only freaking gorgeous, she thought, but I can't read her mind! What was going on? This had never happened before. For as long as she could remember, she had always been able to read others' thoughts. But not hers. Not Kagome's.

Could she be some sort of super spy? Anya excitedly thought, beginning to sweat bullets at the mental image that conjured up. Her adoptive father was already scary and skilled enough to inspire nightmares. But a female version of him? It was too crazy!

Loid gently pushed the little girl forward. "Anya, I want you to meet Kagome. She's the one who baked your cake a while ago. You should say hi," he coaxed. His brows furrowed in concern. While he didn't think Anya would be extremely outgoing, he didn't expect her to completely freeze up either.

Anya gave him a startled glance, eyes a little too wide, and small body shaking with nerves.

What's gotten into her? I thought she would be pleased to meet Kagome. She kept going on and on about how delicious the confetti cake was

The little girl immediately snapped to attention, turning her attention onto the raven-haired beauty. "H-Hello," she loudly stuttered. "I'm-I'm Anya. Pleased to meet-meet you!" Oh no, I need to pull myself together! If I don't, I'll be killed, she inwardly wailed. Her overactive imagination was getting the best of her. Again. They're both spies! I need to play it cool, no matter what!

Kagome crouched down to be on the same level as Anya. She smiled, and Anya couldn't help the blush that colored her cheeks. The older woman was very pretty. It was no wonder Loid kept thinking about her when he didn't think anyone would notice his distraction.

"It's very nice to meet you, Anya," Kagome warmly said. "Your father has told me so much about you."

Oh gosh! What did he say? What did he reveal? He talks about me?

But Kagome was a complete blank. Anya furrowed her brows the slightest bit, trying her best to see if she could read her mind. But there was nothing. Not even a whisper of a thought. It truly confounded the little girl. Her ability to read minds had been her trump card to stay ahead of other people, Loid included at times. What made Kagome different?

Maybe I just need to catch her off guard? But she's a super spy… It may be difficult.

"My papa has sexy thoughts about you," Anya exclaimed, her eyes laser-focused on Kagome's face to see if she would slip up and Anya would finally get a glimpse into her mind.

But there was still nothing.

All she received in response to her bombshell was Loid's furious blushing and embarrassed, "Wha– Anya!" and Kagome's face turning an interesting shade of tomato-red.

Anya mentally pouted. This was confounding. Why couldn't she read Kagome's mind? She just didn't understand. How else was she going to stay one step ahead of these scary spies?

~Extra Scene~

Prompt: Buttermilk Pancakes

Loid rolled over in bed, his hand instinctively reaching for his wife but finding her usual spot empty. Cracking open one blue eye, his brow furrowed. He hadn't felt it when she'd gotten up, not having felt the bed shift with her movement. It wouldn't be the first time, but still. He was a skilled spy. He should be able to sense when his wife awoke and left their bed, at least.

Knowing where she must be, he got up and dressed for a leisurely day at home. A small, gentle smile curved his lips. In his line of work, the life he was currently living was unheard of. Anya was a strange child most days, but she was a good kid with a kind heart. And having Kagome as his wife had been a blessing. Although his mission required him to be married with a child, his feelings for both females were genuine. Anya had cracked the shell he'd placed around his heart years ago when he'd discarded his past and background in order to serve his country, but Kagome had been the one to completely shatter it with her gentle and understanding personality.

Their marriage had been quick. They had known each other for less than a few months before he broached the subject of tying the knot. While Kagome had been reluctant at first, the more they spent time together and discussed it, the more it made sense and benefitted both. Anya was also smitten with Kagome, which helped with the overall situation. It wouldn't work if Anya didn't agree.

Exiting the bedroom, Loid lazily ruffled his blonde hair in hopes that the strands weren't sticking up in odd places. As he entered the kitchen, he found Kagome right where he thought he would.

He smiled at the picture she made. She was still dressed in her pajamas with a frilly apron over it. She was mixing some kind of batter in a bowl, her full attention on the task.

"Good morning, Kagome," he said.

Kagome looked up, her amethyst eyes sparkling at the sight of her husband. "Good morning, Loid," she returned.

"What are you making?"

She went back to mixing the batter. "I thought I would make buttermilk pancakes for breakfast," she answered. "Anya told me these were her favorite."

Loid chuckled. "She likes everything you make," he pointed out. "Then again, so do I." Stepping behind the raven-haired beauty, he comfortably wrapped his arms around her slim waist and nuzzled his nose into her hair. When he deeply breathed in, his senses were flooded with the soothing scent of lavender and something naturally sweet.

"Loid…?" Her voice was hushed, smokey, and it caused a shiver to race up his spine.

He pressed a kiss to her nape.

But when the sound of tiny footsteps coming down the hallway was heard, the blonde male jerked back while Kagome released an embarrassed squeak.

Anya came into view in the next second, her eyes still droopy with sleep and dressed in her cute, animal-print pajamas. "Mama…? Papa?"

"Good morning, Anya," Kagome said, smiling sweetly at the little girl. "Go wash up while I finish making breakfast."

"Breakfast…?"

The raven-haired beauty chuckled. "Yes, I'm making your favorite – pancakes."

Anya brightened, instantly awake. "Pancakes? I'll be back in a flash," she excitedly said, then bolted back down the hall to the bathroom.

Loid scratched the back of his head, disgruntled. "If she's still tired, she should go back to sleep," he grumbled. While having her study in order to attend the prestigious school he needed access to as part of his mission, he had other things on his mind this morning.

Blushing furiously, Kagome said, "Stop it. Go and set the table."

Thank you to everyone who reviewed, followed, and added these prompts to their favorites list! You make me smile :)

Yor is honestly one of my favorite female characters of all-time; she's a total boss babe! Which is why I decided not to write about her at all vs. writing her off (essentially) in order for my story to flow.

But I couldn't resist including Anya! She's so cute and funny, and I truly loved writing her character :)

Hope everyone is having an enjoyable weekend,
