Chapter 099: Stiles Stilinski

TV Show: Teen Wolf (2011)

Prompt: Could've been mine

Chapter Warning(s):

Author's Note: I was never personally a huge Stiles/Lydia fan, so I apologize to those who are.

SS*KH*SS

Something hot and foreign burned within her chest every time she saw the two together. Lydia Martin wasn't sure what the feeling was or what it meant, but she wanted it to stop. She had never known of its existence before, and she had liked it that way. Ignorance was bliss, as the saying goes.

Green eyes narrowed as she practically drilled holes into the objects of her attention – Stiles Stilinski and Kagome Higurashi.

The raven-haired beauty – and Lydia had to admit, if only to herself, that Kagome was indeed a beauty – had transferred to Beacon Hills High School at the same time as Allison Argent. Kagome had managed to capture the attention of the entire student body with her pretty Asian features, dazzling smile, unique amethyst eyes, and overall kind personality.

Lydia hadn't thought much about the attention the other girl was receiving. It was like with Allison. Both girls were new in a small town, where everyone knew everyone. They were like shiny new toys.

Eventually, the excitement would die down, then Lydia would be the Queen Bee again. Simple. That was Lydia's world – and she preferred it that way.

And if neither girl would fall in line like the rest, she would simply snuff them out.

Allison had been easy. She didn't seek the spotlight. She didn't want to stand out in the crowd. She was used to her family moving around a lot, so she didn't see the use in making a huge splash. All she wanted to do was go to school, maybe make one or two good friends, then return home to her quiet existence.

Lydia was more than happy to encourage that behavior. Of course, she hadn't anticipated that Jackson would show interest in Allison, thus threatening Lydia's spot in the school hierarchy. But she could be flexible. Befriending Allison had its perks. She was sweet and Lydia honestly did like her sense of fashion.

But Kagome had been different.

She didn't do anything overt to gain attention. She had an innate ability to draw people to her. With her kind and gentle personality, they stayed. She was able to befriend everyone she encountered, including Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski.

The latter was whom Lydia had the most problem with.

The strawberry blonde could remember the times when Stiles had his entire focus on her, and her alone. He used to proudly exclaim how he'd been in love with her since third grade. How he would do anything and everything to gain her attention. Her affection. A simple word of acknowledgement from her. A glance. Anything.

She remembered all the gifts he'd given her over the years. He never forgot her birthday. He always seemed to go all-out for her. The flat screen television had been one of the most extravagant – but impractical because, of course, her father had already purchased one – gifts she'd received. She remembered the bunches of flowers he'd once personally delivered. Not even Jackson had done that for her, let alone any of her romantic suitors.

Lastly, she remembered how devoted Stiles had been. No matter what she did or said, no matter how nasty she could be, she had never once seen judgement in his dark, soulful eyes. Even when her words or actions clearly sliced into him, he'd been steady and defended her. She had rejected him countless times, had done whatever it took to drive him away, but he never left her side. He forgave her. Protected her. Had been willing to sacrifice himself for her.

But that was all gone now, Lydia thought, her body and mind going numb at the realization. Stiles had found someone else to love and devote himself to.

More importantly, he found someone who returned his feelings.

Lydia briefly looked away from the happy couple, that same hot and foreign burning in her chest intensifying. She bit her bottom lip, trying to repress the feeling. Why? Why did she have to experience this type of emotion now? Now, when it was too late?

Unable to help herself, she lifted green eyes to once again watch Stiles and Kagome.

They were talking about something – Lydia didn't know what, she was too far away to hear their conversation – but Stiles was grinning and moving his hands animatedly, his sole focus on the raven-haired beauty. He was clearly excited about whatever he was sharing, and Kagome watched with an indulgent smile on her pretty features.

Soon, their conversation shifted. Stiles' eyes became soft with affection. His hands stopped moving; instead, one gently grasped Kagome's hand, tugging her closer to his frame. She didn't hesitate, her head moving up to gaze at him with adoration.

Smiling, he used his free hand to brush her hair behind an ear and leaned down to press a tender kiss onto her lips.

Lydia swiftly turned on her heel, no longer able to stand the sight of them. No longer able to stand the sight of Stiles being so loving and gentle to someone who wasn't her. None of her previous boyfriends, including Jackson, had ever treated her the way Stiles treated Kagome.

She'd been blind all along. He could've been mine, she thought, tears filling her eyes.

What did you guys think of this chapter/prompt? While I do enjoy Stiles and Lydia as separate characters from Teen Wolf, I never really got into the hype of them as a romantic couple/pairing. Apologies if this offends anyone! But this is my own personal opinion, so please bear with me.
