Chapter 14

After watching Moira's press conference on the TV Sara knew that she was going to get called into work because all of the hospitals and urgent care clinics were about to be inundated with the injured and those who wouldn't know where else to go, so she went ahead and got ready then headed on in. The first victims of the Undertaking were just starting to trickle in when John Diggle, Oliver's bodyguard, appeared in front of her. Motioning him over to the side Sara asked him what was happening. He quickly recapped his last few hours, including getting stabbed a couple of times. He had already removed the blades and applied pressure bandages to the afflicted areas.

"You're gonna need…" Sara started to say.

"Stitches, I know." Dig interrupted. "Those and the good meds are the only reason I'm here right now."

"And here I thought that you came just for my sparkling personality." Sara joked as she led him over to one of the few unused rooms and got out the suture kit. "You said that Oliver went to check on Laurel at CNRI? Do you know if she's okay?"

"That's where he said he was going." Dig said as she injected lidocaine in order to numb the area she was going to stitch. "I haven't heard anything else, but most of the cell towers went down during the earthquake, so the signal is spotty."

Sara tried not to think about her sister and the dangers that she might be facing and instead focused on the task before her, but despite her best effort Sara's mind drifted to her sister. After Christmas Sara told Laurel about downgrading her relationship with Ollie, in return Laurel had invited Sara out for hamburgers and milkshakes where they finally had the heart to heart they needed to have. Tears were shed and harsh truths were brought to light, but they left the restaurant on much better terms. Since then both had tied to actively be a part of the others life. Laurel had confessed she didn't know how she really felt about Ollie since Sara had told her that her and Ollie were completely broken up. Sara could tell that her sister was in love with Tommy, but she knew that Laurel needed to work through her very complicated history with Ollie before she was ready to fully commit herself to Tommy.

Zoning back in Sara commented, "Thankfully these aren't very deep, just skin and fat were affected."

"Hooray," Dig said sarcastically.

Sara didn't waste any time and soon had him sewn up. Holding up an IV she said, "Let me hook you up to this IV, it's got some antibiotics and some pain relief in it."

Shrugging his good shoulder Dig gave in, "Sure, stab away."

Once she had the IV established, she told him, "With all of the people that are coming in I'm going to have you wait in the waiting room while this runs through. Plus, I can keep a closer eye on you there."

"Just point me to a corner, and I'll just rack out there." Dig replied as he slowly and stiffly got to his feet, his injuries making themselves known now that he had been sitting for a bit.

"I hope that's Army speak for taking a nap." Sara said steadying him and guiding him back to the waiting area.

"Oorah!" Dig said, grinning at the annoyed look she gave him.

Coming to a stop in a back corner Sara helped Dig to sit down and hooked his IV bag to a stand that she had grabbed on the way. "I'll be back to check on you Army man."

As she turned Sara noticed that several staff members were hurriedly heading to the doors and started that way herself. In the ER if medical personnel were going anywhere in anything other than a walk, it must be an emergency. At first all that she saw were feet on a gurney. When more of the patient came into view, she saw the rebar that was protruding from patient's side, which was not good. She was about to follow the gurney into the trauma bay when she recognized who the patient actually was, Tommy Merlyn. Shit!

Seeing Marjorie, another nurse, Sara quickly moved over to her and asked, "What happened?"

"We were waiting for the next round of victims to arrive and this motorbike came screeching in. That Hood guy was driving and had our victim in front of him. He handed him off to us and then sped away down the alley. Alex grabbed a gurney and here we are."

By that time, they had reached trauma one, Sara wanted to help, but since she personally knew Tommy, she knew that she shouldn't because of the conflict of interest so she stepped back. Marjorie looked at her quizzically. "Aren't you going to help? We can use your experience."

Sara shook her head, "I know him personally and I'm good friends with him. His name is Tommy and he was dating my sister."

Marjorie nodded in understanding, "Get his chart started and then hand it off to me." Sara nodded and got started charting. She had just handed it off to Marjorie and was headed back to the waiting room to check on Diggle and update him about Ollie and Tommy when she heard her name being yelled in the waiting room. Running into the waiting room she found her sister and father standing there looking lost. Laurel was sobbing in her father's arms, while their dad was standing like a statue. They were both covered with dirt and Laurel had scrapes and abrasions all over.

"Oh my God are you both okay?" Sara asked with concern, hurrying over to where they were standing and starting to check them over.

"Tommy, Tommy, he..." Laurel stuttered before losing the battle with her emotions and was overtaken by sobs.

Worriedly Sara shot a questioning look at her father who picked up the commentary "Your sister was at CNRI when the quake hit. Tommy appeared out of nowhere and managed to pull her out, but he somehow got trapped in the building. We saw the Hood pull him out of the building just before it collapsed and put him on his bike. We," he stammered. "We just hope that he made it here. Do you know anything…"

Nodding Sara stepped closer to her sister and went into nurse mode. She gently placed a hand on Laurel's shoulder and another on her face. "Hey Laurel, I need you to look at me." Once her sister's gaze was on her Sara said. "Deep breaths." She demonstrated what she wanted her sister to do and Laurel slowly started copying her. "That's it. Breathe in for four, hold for four, out for four." Once Laurel was calmer Sara stepped back and filled them in with what she knew. "The Hood did drop Tommy off. He arrived right before I found you guys. He's in trauma one right now getting the best care possible. He will probably be going into surgery soon, so if you want to wait for word, I will bring you upstairs to the surgical waiting room and you can wait there for news of his status. I filled out his medical chart and listed both you and Ollie as his next of kin." None of them said anything about Malcolm, or about how this whole thing had been his fault.

Laurel drew another deep shuttering breath and tried to wipe some of the tears away, but just smeared the dirt on her face, "Have you heard from Ollie? His club is in the Glades and I know that he spends a lot of time there."

Shaking her head Sara said, "I haven't heard anything about him, but if I do, I'll let you know as soon as I can."

"What about Felicity? Ollie told me that he was going to ask her out." She sniffed and wiped another tear away. "I know she's often at the club with Ollie cause Tommy's left babysitting Olivia if Thea's with her new boyfriend."

When Laurel stopped to take a breath Sara laid a hand on her sisters shoulder, "No matter what happens it will be okay, we'll make it through this, okay?" Laurel nodded mutely as more tears slipped down her cheeks. "And no I haven't heard from Felicity either. I'm sure once service is restored she'll let us know that she's okay." Sara pulled out her key to her locker. "Here is the key to my locker. Go get cleaned up, there should be something in there that will fit you."

Leaning forward Laurel wrapped her arms around Sara and said, "Thank you." Sara wrapped her arms around her sister, they stayed like that for a little bit, taking comfort from each other and then with one last squeeze they parted. Her dad stepped forward and gave her his own hug and kissed her on top of her head. "Love you, Sweetie."

She smiled, "Thanks, Daddy." With a gentle pat on her shoulder, he followed Laurel down the hallway.

"Hey Daddy?" She called stopping Quentin in the hallway. She jogged over and gave him another hug , his warm embrace giving her the comfort she needed. "Love you," she whispered.

"Love you too, Baby Girl." He pressed another kiss to her head and went after Laurel who was waiting for him in the hallway.

Sara took a second to get her emotions back under control, armed with the new information she went to check on Dig and to see if he had heard anything from Ollie. She knew that Oliver had dropped Tommy off, and Dig had told her that Ollie had been injured in his fight with Malcolm, so if Diggle hadn't heard from him, she would officially be worried. Approaching the bodyguard, she could see that he was dozing with his head leaning against the wall. She softly called his name so that she wouldn't startle him, "Dig. Hey Dig. Are you awake?"

He quickly sat up and slightly disoriented he blinked a few times while he got his bearings, "hey."

Sara took his wrist and checked his pulse. It was much better than before, and his coloring had improved as well. Checking the IV she saw that it was mostly empty. "How're you feeling?"

He paused to assess himself before he answered, "Better. Could still use some more sleep, but much better."

She smiled at his honest answer. "Have you heard anything from Ollie or Felicity? I know towers are down but." She let her sentence trail off.

Frowning Dig pulled out his phone from his pocket, there was a text from Felicity letting him know that she had safely made it back to the mansion, but nothing from Oliver. "Nope. Have you heard something?"

Worried, Sara sat down beside him and explained what had happened since she set him down in the waiting room. "So, I'm officially worried about Ollie."

"You said that after he dropped Tommy off here that he took off on his bike?"

"That's what another nurse told me." Sara said.

Dig grabbed his IV line, pinched it closed and removed the cannula, holding pressure over the insertion site for a few seconds to prevent it from bleeding. "Let's go find him. Felicity put a tracker in his boot. It was working yesterday," He frowned, "Or was it the day before? Anyway, it worked earlier." Opening his phone, he pulled up a app and a location popped up in green. "It looks like he is stationary and just around the corner."

"That's not good, is it?" Sara asked, worried about her ex-boyfriend.

"Not for the man who can hardly sit still and is still dressed in green." Dig replied heading for the door.

"Wait a second!" Sara called as she grabbed the mostly empty IV bag. Quickly disposing of it, she stepped over to her supervisor and told her that she needed to take a smoke break and left before the woman could say anything.

She followed Dig around the side of the building and down the alley to where the dumpster was. Squinting into the dim light she could just make out something in the shadows. Walking closer she saw that it was Ollie's bike and that he was slumped on the ground beside it. They both broke out into a run calling him, "Ollie! Oliver!" however he didn't stir.

Sara knelt down in front of him and saw that blood had soaked the front of the green leather. Looking into his face she saw that he was quite pale, and was sweating profusely.

"Damn, that's a lot of blood." Dig said.

Agreeing Sara grabbed Ollie wrist to check his pulse. His skin was cool to her touch and his pulse was weak and rapid, and breathing shallow. "We've got to get him inside quickly. I'm pretty sure that he's suffering from hemorrhagic shock." Dig's hands went for the zipper of his top. "We don't have time for that!" Sara snapped at him.

"Look, it's either take a few seconds to hide the Hood stuff or your dad will have him locked up and he will throw away the key! Now help me get this stuff off of him." Dig demanded. He already had the top unzipped and was struggling to get it off of the limp man. Sara moved Ollie forward and slipped the other side of the jacket off, glad that he was wearing an undershirt rather than having to wrangle him into another top. Gesturing to the bike, Dig said, "We need to get his boots off. Check the back bag it should have a pair of shoes in it."

Nodding Sara quickly pulled a pair of old boat shoes and removed the boots that Oliver was wearing. "What about his pants?" she asked.

Dig hesitated for a second. "Will anybody in the ER pay attention to his pants? It's difficult to dress an unconscious person."

"No, they shouldn't notice them, especially if I cut them off as soon as we get him in there." Sara said.

"Okay, then leave them on." Dig instructed. Once they had him as de-Hooded as much as possible Dig laid out the plan. "I'm going to carry him in, then once you get him in a room and start to work on him, I'll slip back here to hide the bike and then I'll go back to where you put me earlier."

Sara nodded her understanding and agreement with the plan. They then stashed the clothes that they had removed from Oliver in the bike and Dig slid Oliver over his shoulder and into a fireman's carry. "Felicity's right, he's freaking heavy." he said with a groan.

"Shit! Felicity!" Sara exclaimed. "I'll call her really quick to let her know what's happening." Dig just grunted in agreement as the strain of carrying Oliver was taxing his injured system.

Pulling out her phone she quickly hit the speed dial for Felicity and hoped that her friend would pick up and that the call wouldn't drop. The phone rang twice before a worried sounding Felicity answered, "Sara! Are you okay? Have you heard anything from Oliver or Dig?"

"Felicity!" Sara interrupted her questioning, "I'm fine, we're at the hospital. Oliver's hurt and Dig's bringing him in. He rescued Tommy, who rescued Laurel. Everybody is here at the hospital. I'll have Dig update you when he can." She hated dumping all the information at once, but with the cell towers being so unstable she wanted to make sure Felicity had all of the pertinent information before the call cut out.

Felicity bit back a sob, "Thank you, I'll head there shortly. Bye."

Hanging up Sara pocked her phone and seeing the lights of the ER ran ahead, "We need a gurney!" She shouted to the personnel who were waiting by the entrance for the next ambulance to arrive. Once they had the gurney, Dig gently laid Oliver on it and faded into the background as Sara started pushing the gurney to the trauma room.

"Trauma three is open," A voice called to her as they rushed by.

Oliver was soon surrounded by medical personnel and in the bright lights of the ER he looked even worse than he had in the alleyway. He was far paler than normal, his closed eyes looked bruised, and she noticed the other bruised and reddened places on his face and chest indicating recent injury. But what concerned her the most the the blood painted down the front of his chest. Snapping back to it Sara quickly cut his pants off, while another nurse cut off his shirt and put the ECG leads on his chest. As things were being connected his vitals started appearing on the monitors and the numbers that were displayed were not good.

The doctor in charge started calling out orders, "We need two large bore IV's going, and a type and match for blood. He's circling!" They had one IV in when the monitors suddenly went haywire.

"He's in V-fib! We need to shock him." The crash cart was quickly wheeled over, and the doctor charged the paddles, "Clear, Shocking." Oliver twitched on the table and the monitors changed back to their normal tone. "Get that other IV going! We've got to stop the bleeding! Or he will code again."

Sara's friend Marjorie came rushing in with bags of blood from the blood bank, "I've got type specific blood." She handed them off to Sara, who hooked it up to the existing IV.

Getting a good look at the patient, Marjorie's eyebrows flew up and she grabbed Sara's arm and pulled her off to the side. "Is that who I think it is?" she asked as Sara nodded. "You didn't treat your friend earlier, but you're treating him?"

Sara sighed, she couldn't admit that one of the reasons that she had to be there was to hid evidence that he was the Hood, "I have to be here, he's.." She couldn't but into words the protective feeling she had for Ollie. "But I'm not the primary and as soon as he's moved into surgery I'm stay here till I'm off shift."

Marjorie sighed then nodded. "Okay. I'll be around if you need someone to talk to later."

"Thank you," Sara said, stepping back to Oliver's side just in time to hear a resident ask.

"Could it be the subclavian?"

"If it's the subclavian, then to reach it we'll have to do a thoracotomy," The attending answered. "So how do we treat?"

The resident looked at the wound placement, "Try direct pressure then if the bleeding continues open him up and stitch up the subclavian?"

"Was that a question or statement?"

"A statement, ma'am." The nervous resident answered.

"That's correct Sam."

"Thank you, Dr. Corday."

"I'm going to check on the other trauma room, if the bleeding doesn't slow down prep him for emergency surgery. I'll be right back." Dr. Corday said as she looked over at Sara. "Please come with me Ms. Lance."

Sara followed her out into the hallway. She actually liked Dr. Corday; she didn't have a god-complex like many of the doctors that she worked with seemed to have and she reminded Sara of an older version of her mother. "If I'm not mistaken the gentleman that we have on that gurney is your ex-boyfriend, correct?"

"Yes, ma'am." She saw no point in lying.

"I thought so. So please accompany me to the next trauma bay." Dr. Corday's tone brokered not arguments. Sara didn't argue and went with her, but her mind stayed with Oliver.

When she saw that they were moving Oliver she stepped over to Dr. Corday, "May I go and see where they are moving him to and let the family know? His bodyguard is in the waiting area and is keeping the rest of the family informed." Dr. Corday nodded and Sara dashed over, reaching them before they boarded the elevator. "Where are you moving him to?"

"Surgery, then the private wing." The intern answered as he pushed the button to call the elevator.

"Were they able to get the bleeding stopped? Also make sure that the patient with the rebar, lands in the same room in private wing when he's out of surgery." Sara said, knowing that both Tommy and Oliver would feel better being near each other.

"Huh?" The intern asked.

Another one of Sara's nurse friends laid her hand on Sara's shoulder, "Don't worry hun, I'll make sure that it happens. And they were able to get the bleeding to stop on Mr. Queen. They are just going in to clean it out and stitch him up. Should be quick and easy."

"Thanks Steph."

Steph laid a hand on her shoulder, "I'll keep you updated about Tommy's condition. It was touch and go in there."

Sara swallowed hard and nodded her thanks. The elevator arrived and Sara watched as Oliver was pushed on and the doors closed behind them. Then she turned to look for Dig and updated him before returning to help in the chaos that was the ER. Sara had done the best that she could and now it was time to continue helping the others.

a/n2:What should Tommy's fate be? Should his death be used to motivate Oliver to do better or should he live and be there to motivate Oliver himself?
