Chapter Eight

As they entered the village, Nanoha's breath caught in her throat. The once lively streets were now reduced to a charred wasteland, littered with lifeless bodies. The smell of death permeated the air, it's heavy presents a suffocating weight on their shoulders.

"Who could have done this?" Nanoha asked her voice tight with emotion.

Suzuka, the gentle healer of their group, knelt beside a mother who held her child clutched in her arms, their faces forever frozen in terror. Her eyes brimmed with tears, Suzuka choked out a soft prayer and closed their eyes. Arisa, ever the fierce protector, squeezed her shoulder in a silent show of support.

"Whoever is responsible for this, we'll make them pay," Arisa said, her voice filled with determination.

Fate was a skilled warrior in her world, but this gruesome scene before her was like nothing she had ever seen before. All around them, bodies lay casually tossed to the side like discarded dolls, a testament to the sheer brutality of the attack.

"Hey," Nanoha said softly, placing a comforting hand on Fate's shoulder. "We're going to find whoever did this and stop them."

Nanoha looked into Fate's sad burgundy eyes, and couldn't help feeling an odd sensation of familiarity. It was as if she had seen those same sad eyes in a dream long ago. Her heart skipped a beat as she tried to push the thoughts aside, focusing instead on the present.

"Thank you, Nanoha," Fate said, her voice barely audible, even to herself. For a brief moment, their gazes locked, and time seemed to stand still.

The group discussed how to bury all of the people, it was agreed upon that digging individual graves was going to be too monumental, so a mass grave was their best option. Fate asked Alph to use her magic to dig a giant hole. Placing the victims in the hole that was dug out seemed disrespectful, but there was little else they could do given the circumstances. Each movement was deliberate and gentle, a final act of kindness for those who had suffered so in their last moments of life.

"May their souls find peace," Suzuka murmured, as the dirt was moved over the bodies and ceiling the grave.

As they finished covering the grave, Nanoha couldn't help but engage Fate in conversation about their respective worlds. "Are there wars in your world too, Fate?" She asked, curious to learn more about the place Fate called home.

Fate nodded. "Yes, similar atrocities have happened. It's heartbreaking to know that some evils transcend worlds."

"Earth has wars too," Nanoha admitted, "But not to this degree of slaughter." She clenched her fists, her eyes shining with resolve. "At least, I don't think so."

The group moved through the wreckage, trying to understand what kind of monsters could commit such atrocities. It would seem that an army similar to the one that attacked them had attacked the village too. Monsters that had been killed were put in a pile and burned.

As the day wore on, the group gathered to discuss their next move. Suzuka looked at the map they had found earlier, her brow frowned in concern. "I'm worried we're making a mistake by going in this direction, but then again we don't know where the city was that we were in either."

"We'll figure it out, Suzuka. We always do. Now, thanks to you we have this map." Arisa said.

The clouds in the sky are painted in beautiful colors as the sun sets behind the mountains. The flames of their campfire flickered, as Nanoha and Fate stared off into their thoughts, of what they had witnessed that day, on their minds. Across the fire, Suzuka clung to Arisa, finding comfort in her arms.

Nanoha glanced at Fate, noticing the distant look in her eyes. "Are you thinking about Alicia?" She asked.

Fate nodded, sadness flickering across her face. "Yes, I just hope she knows how much I love her and that I'm doing everything I can to reunite us."

"Your love for her is so strong, Fate," Nanoha said, "I know she can feel it, wherever she is."

Fate managed a small smile, appreciative of Nanoha's comforting words. "Thank you, Nanoha. You have a kind heart."

Creeping over the horizon, the sun cast a dim light on the group as they prepared to break camp. Nanoha and Fate stand together, their devices scanning the area for any magical threats or enemies. Their devices chime in unison reassuring voices announcing, "No threats detected, My Master." "All clear, Sir."

"Is everyone ready?" Nanoha asked, the others nodded yes. "Good, we'll head out as planned." She looked over at Fate, noting the worry that lingered in her eyes. "Are you ready?"

Fate took a deep breath, gripping her device, "Yes, let's go."

Making their way up the steep hill, the ascent made their legs burn with exertion by the time they reached the top. At the crest Nanoha paused, turning back to take one last look at the mass grave that lay below them. The site hardened her resolve to not let that happen again.

Making their way through the forest, they came down the other side of the hill and came across a large body of water. The shimmered surface casts a serene glow over the area. They approached the water's edge and dipped their fingers in, tasting it to confirm that it was indeed fresh, not salty.

"Looks like we've found ourselves a lake," Suzuka observed, relieved to see something so beautiful after the horrors they had recently witnessed.

The group exchanged weary glances, feeling the weight of the past days' events bearing down on them. It was clear they all needed time to relax and decompress. Nanoha took charge, her voice soft but firm as she addressed the others. "We should take a day to rest here by the lake. We can't keep pushing ourselves without a break, not after that."

"Agreed," Fate chimed in, looking around with concern. "We need to be at our best if we're going to face what's coming."

The decision made, the group set about making camp.

Splitting off into pairs, each finding ways to unwind and recharge. Arisa and Suzuka wandered along the shore, picking up smooth stones to skip across the water. Holding hands and just being together.

Fate sat on a fallen log, her eyes closed as she listened to the gentle lapping of the lake's waves against the shore. She felt Nanoha sit down beside her. "Thank you, Nanoha," She murmured.

"You don't have to thank me," Nanoha said.

"Of course," Fate replied. Feeling the warmth of Nanoha next to her, Fate felt like she could rest for the moment. Her head leaned on Nanoha's shoulder fast asleep.

Alph notices Fate is with Nanoha and finally lets down her guard. Smiling at her master, Alph is looking for something to do.

Alph noticed Suzuka and Arisa playing near the water's edge. With a mischievous glint in her eyes, she decided to surprise them and transformed into her human form. "Hey, you two!" She called out, walking towards them. Her sudden transformation startled Suzuka and Arisa, who stared at her in amazement.

"Alph, you have a human form?" Suzuka asked, astonished by the revelation.

"Of course! I'm a familiar, not a wolf. So I thought it'd be fun to join you," Alph replied, grinning.

"Wow," Arisa said, still processing the change. "Well, come on then! Let's enjoy ourselves!"

The three of them splashed around in the water, laughing and enjoying each other's company. After some fun with Alph, Suzuka, and Arisa wanted some alone time, so they found a private cove and began to play in the water more intimately. Their love for each other shone through as they held hands, gently kissing and sharing tender moments.

Out of sight of the others, Suzuka asks Arisa "Can I," Blushing "Have a bite?"

Smiling, Arisa pulls Suzuka close and whispers, "Yes anytime." Exposing her neck.

Suzuka kisses the spot and then sinks her teeth in to drink Arisa's delicious blood. Both moan at the feeling this induces.

Alph turns in a different direction after hearing the moan, her new playmates are playing a game she wants nothing to do with.

Fate woke up to the noise of the splashing water, so she and Nanoha moved over to the shore, watching Alph play by herself. Fate sighed wistfully, her gaze fixed on the water. "I wish I could swim," She admitted.

Nanoha looked at her with surprise. "You don't know how to swim?"

Fate shook her head, her cheeks coloring. "No, I never learned."

"Then let me teach you," Nanoha offered, smiling. "It's not that hard, and it'll be fun!"

Fate hesitated for a moment before nodding, her determination returning. "Alright, let's do this."

They waded into the shallows, Nanoha guiding Fate step by step. She demonstrated proper kicking technique and helped Fate find her balance in the water. As Fate began to gain confidence, she focused on her breathing and the rhythm of her movements. Nanoha stayed close by, offering encouragement and support.

"See? You're getting it!" Nanoha beamed proudly as Fate paddled through the water with growing ease.

"Thanks to you," Fate replied, her eyes shining with gratitude. "I couldn't have done this without you, Nanoha."

Their bond deepened as they continued to practice, each moment of success bringing them closer together.

Suddenly, Nanoha felt a large, wet tentacle wrap around her leg from beneath the surface. She screamed and struggled against the surprisingly strong grip, but it only tightened further. Before she knew it, she was being pulled away from Fate and dragged deeper into the lake. Terror gripped her heart as she kicked wildly, trying to free herself from the creature's grasp.

"Nanoha!" Fate cried out, panic filling her voice as she searched for her friend in the murky depths.

Arisa and Suzuka watched in horror as they saw Nanoha being pulled under the water by an unknown force. Without thinking, Arisa dove in to rescue her friend.

"Nanoha!" She yelled, swimming as fast as she could through the water. Her panic grew as she couldn't find any sign of her friend or the source of what had taken her.

Suzuka quickly joined her partner, their eyes scanning the murky depths for any sign of movement or light. They swam in tandem, their hearts pounding in their chests as they fought against the current caused by what took Nanoha.

Back at the lake's edge, Fate asks Alph to help find and save Nanoha, Alph tries to swim out but keeps coming up sputtering for air.

Underwater, a Merperson appeared on the scene, its scales glistening in the light as it swam toward the struggling lander. Its long, muscled tail propelled it through the water with incredible speed.

It reached out with its webbed hand and grabbed hold of the tentacle, biting down hard enough to draw blood. The monster hits the Merperson away but the Merperson keeps coming back biting and scratching until it releases its grip on the lander, giving them a momentary reprieve.

Getting the lander away from the monster. The Merperson notices that she can't breathe underwater. The Merperson makes an air bubble and brings her to the surface, making its way to the shore.

Suzuka, Arisa, and Alph swam back to shore as they could not find Nanoha in the water. On land, the friends stared out at the water with wide eyes and bated breaths. Their hearts pounded in their chests as they scanned the surface for any sign of Nanoha.

"Come on, Nanoha," Arisa whispered under her breath, her grip tightening around Suzuka's hand. Suzuka shared her concern, her chest tight with worry.

Their gazes were drawn to a large bubble that emerged from the deep waters, quite far from the coast. The sight was mesmerizing, and they watched as it slowly moved towards them.

"Could that be...?" Fate questioned, uncertainty lacing her voice. She stood alongside Alph, both of them ready to take action if necessary.

As the bubble approached the shoreline, Fate's heart raced with hope, mixed with a lingering fear for her secret love's safety. Her fingers twitched near Bardiche, ready to summon its power at a moment's notice. Nanoha's well-being meant everything to her, and she couldn't bear the thought of losing her now.

*Please, let her be okay…* Fate thought, her burgundy eyes never leaving the approaching bubble. The weight of her emotions seemed to echo through her very soul.

As the bubble drew nearer, Fate's heart pounded with anticipation and dread. The translucent sphere glided smoothly across the water, revealing a glimpse of Nanoha within. She was breathing heavily, her face flushed from exertion and fear. A mysterious force propelled her towards the shore.

"Look!" Arisa shouted, pointing at the approaching bubble. "Nanoha's inside! But what's pushing her?"

"Is that...a mermaid?" Suzuka asked, squinting as she tried to make out the figure propelling Nanoha forward. The others exchanged wary glances, unsure whether this new arrival was friend or foe.

"Is it helping her, or is this just another trick?" Alph questioned, her voice laced with suspicion.

"Whatever it is," Fate said firmly, "We'll be ready for it."

Fate steeled herself as she clutched Bardiche tightly, prepared to defend Nanoha with every fiber of her being. The others took their positions around her, forming a united front against the unknown threat.

As the bubble made it to the shoreline, the tension amongst the group was palpable. Fate held her breath, waiting for the moment to strike if necessary. The Merperson emerged from the water, its expression unreadable as it guided Nanoha to safety.

"Who are you?" Fate called out, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her heart. "Are you the one who took Nanoha? Answer me!"

"Give her back to us!" Arisa said, standing protectively beside Suzuka.

"Let's see what it has to say first," Alph cautioned, her eyes never leaving the Merperson.

The Merperson regarded them all for a moment, its gaze settling on Fate as it finally spoke.

*Peace,* It said softly using telepathy, raising its hands in a sign of surrender. *I only wished to help. I saw the creature attacking your friend and intervened. I meant no harm.*

The group of friends did not move but eased up a bit. When the bubble touches the sandy beach it pops and Nanoha splashes into the water. Fate jumps in and grabs her before she can go under.

*Safe for now.* The Merperson said telepathically. *You must be careful of the Akkorokamui. They play and then eat you.*

"Thank you for saving her," Fate says. "We are not from this world, please forgive me, but what are you?"

*I am of the Merpeople, my name is not a name like yours would be. Call me Bulpty.*

"Thank you Bulpty for saving Nanoha," Fate says to the Merperson.

*You say you are not from this world. What world are you from?* Bulpty asks with a hint of fear.

"We are the heroes from Earth and Midchilda. The goddess of your world brought us here." Arisa says.

*Then, I am very glad to have saved her. May the gentle waters keep you safe.* Bulpty says.

"Will it come back if we stay here?" Suzuka asks Bulpty.

*Mayhap. I gave it a good thrashing, so mayhap not.* Bulpty says.

"I'm done playing in the water for today." A weak Nanoha says to her friends with a smile on her face.

Suzuka asks Bulpty, "Which way is best to go around this lake?"

*That way,* Bulpty points to their right, *That way gets very dry* Bulpty points to their left, *That way the land gets very wet and landers have been known to sink into the land.*

"To the very dry we go then," Arisa says. "I'm not taking the chance with quicksand."

"Let's stay here the night until Nanoha feels better. Then we can head out in the morning." Fate says.

*I will stay nearby to keep a lookout for the Akkorokamui.* Bulpty tells the girls.

"Thank you, Bulpty for saving me. That thing is a huge squid-like monster with tentacles." Nanoha says breathing better now. "If this was a hentai anime I would have been deflowered and then killed." Bulpty and Fate look at Nanoha with questioning looks, Arisa facepalms, and Suzuka laughs. "Never mind it was a bad joke."

Nanoha as much as she was enjoying being in Fate's arms, she needed to move some. "Fate, can you help me up? I need to walk around a bit." Fate's arms tightened for just a second and then Fate nodded her head and helped Nanoha up.

"Arisa and I will get dinner ready," Suzuka says.

"I'll help too." Fate volunteers.

"No, stay with Nanoha." Suzuka told Fate.

Out of earshot of Nanoha and Fate, Arisa asks Suzuka, "Are you trying to matchmake the two of them?"

Suzuka smiles, "Maybe." And continues to work on dinner.

Arisa also smiles, "Good, Nanoha deserves to be happy with someone. I even like Fate too."

"So do I," Suzuka says.

The next morning the girls said goodbye to Bulpty and headed into the forest again hoping this will take them to their other friends.

Nanoha couldn't help but steal glances at Fate as they moved deeper into the woods. The connection between them had grown, but now was not the time to explore what she was feeling. Nearly dying has made Nanoha hyper-aware that she is attracted to Fate.
