Hey guys! After spending months on this story, it has finally come to an end. Yippee! Thank you all so much for reading this whole thing. If you like it please go check out my other stories. Also, if you can, please review the story as a whole because I'm very interested to hear what you guys have to think. So goodbye everyone! Enjoy the last chapter.
After waking up, Percy and Jason had been slowly recovering together, monitored very closely by everyone at camp, including Sally Jackson who now visited frequently. Percy had been a lot quieter than usual, only really talking to people individually. When more than one person was around, he tended to fall silent, letting the others talk while he slipped into the background.
Annabeth knew he was trying to hold it together for the sake of everyone else, including his mother. She knew he was struggling, and probably always would be, but there was something that had changed in him since coming back from Tartarus the second time. Something stronger in him.
All throughout his time in Tartarus, he had been laying helpless to his torturer, unable to defend himself, unable to protect himself, unable to leave in general. He had been completely subjected to whatever the monsters wanted him to be subjected to. But after returning, he had actually fought back. He had stood up for himself. And now his torturer was dead. And Annabeth knew that that fact alone was keeping him together. The fact that in the long run, he won.
After a broken shoulder, stab wound, and still lasting injuries from his last Tartarus trip, Percy stayed in the infirmary for an entire week. He was constantly watched, his mother rarely seen not by his side. But after extensive healing work from Will, Percy was finally cleared to go back to living with his mother.
He stood on the top of the hill, looking down at the camp, his home. Annabeth came up beside him.
"Don't get all sappy, Seaweed Brain. You'll be back here soon." Annabeth laced her fingers through his, trying desperately to ease his anxiety by lightening the mood.
"I know." He said but his voice was quiet. Annabeth glanced at him in concern.
"And you know that I'm coming to visit tomorrow, right?" She turned his head towards her.
"I know." He said again, but his voice was stronger this time and a small smile grew on his lips.
"We're okay. You and I. Everything is okay." Annabeth wrapped her arms around his shoulders and hugged him. She felt one of his arms go around her back, the other one unable to move due to the break.
He pulled back and stared at her. Her eyes twinkled in the dying light of the setting sun. The face he had imagined countless times stood etched in reality, mere inches from him. He leaned in and kissed her, just because he could.
She gave another smile and laugh and it was those small actions that drew a larger smile from him. It was so strange to smile after not being able to for so long. He felt the urge and had to remind himself to allow it. But once he was smiling, he felt weight lifted off his shoulders. Because he was here, in the sun, with Annabeth. And nothing else mattered.
"I'll see you tomorrow." She said on his lips. He kissed her again and she backed away. His mom came up on the hill, finally able to cross the barrier after all these years. She still stared at him with caution, and for that, Percy would feel eternally guilty. He moved over to her and looped an arm through her's, just to remind her that he was here. She smiled at him, tenderness in her gaze.
"Let's go home." She said bracingly.
As they loaded their belongings into the car, others came on the hill. Leo, Jason, Piper, Hazel, Frank, Nico, Will. They all stood to say goodbye. While they all knew they would see Percy soon, whether tomorrow, next week, or in a month, there was something symbolic about his departure. Percy finally being able to go home, move on with his life, meant that the war was finally over. There was nothing more to do. No more life or death. No more sacrifice. They could move on and discover what was next.
Once the car was packed, Percy turned to each of them. Him and Piper hugged, carefully to avoid injuries. He and Nico and Will clasped hands and hit each other's backs. Frank couldn't stop himself from giving a bear hug. Hazel was in tears as she inspected his bandages one last time. Him and Leo hugged as Percy turned towards Annabeth.
Annabeth, his light in darkness, his reason for living, reached for him. He went into her arms and was once again reminded how lucky he was to be standing here. That all those months in that dimply lit basement, he dreamed of being right here. And this was reality. Nothing would ever change that. No amount of memories or fear could dilute the fact that both he and Annabeth were alive and together.
As if reading his thoughts, Annabeth whispered in his ear, "As long as we're together." Her words an echo of a time before.
"As long as we're together." He held her tighter than his injuries wanted him to. They broke apart again.
"Go home, Percy." She gave a small smile.
Finally turning away and stepping into the car, he gave Camp Half-Blood one last look before the doors closed. He relished in the fact that would see here again, and nothing would ever keep him from here again. He would see her again, standing in the glittering light. He would see all of them again, the people who would do anything for him. He closed the car door and smiled at his mom, who had believed in him when he hadn't even believed in himself.
"Let's go home." He echoed her previous words and she started the car. They pulled out of the yard and into the road. Back to Paul and Estelle.
"He'll be okay." Leo said to Annabeth as Percy drove away. He put his arm around her shoulder.
Annabeth smiled and said, "I know."
And they all turned around and walked back down the hill.
For the last time, please review. :)
I love you all
