When she was a knight of Seiros, Catherine had many experiences. She had to fight a hedgemon, she lost good friends, and had to end many lives. Yet nothing prepared her for the fact that she would soon become a mother. Not a mother to just any kid, but a kid that would also be the child of her beloved "Lady Rhea." Rhea was a miracle worker, but the extent of her miracles would always amaze Catherine. She always assumed that if she were to have a child, it'd be through adoption. She was still interested in the idea, but she wasn't sure how to react when Rhea approached her with the idea of having a biological child. She thought she was joking at first. She soon realized that Rhea was serious. She didn't understand exactly how it happened, just that it did. Now she was here in Zanado, with her wife and a soon to be child. She was nervous, but excited at the same time. She figured most parents would be.
Rhea was rather nervous too about bringing new life into the world. However, it was now a war free world and she had no responsibility as the head of the church anymore. She was free to just be with her loved ones. Her child would be born into a safe world. Something she was rather grateful to Byleth, Dimitri, and all of those who fought next to them. She placed her hand on her abdomen, to see if her child would kick. Rhea thought about her circumstances, and thought about the various children she had over the years. While the two don't talk as much now, Cyril was always in her heart. He offered to babysit the child if ever necessary. There were the various vessels she had created for her Mother, who she also considered children. Lastly, there was her niece Flayn. Rhea did know how to raise a child, but she was still excited to have one that would call her "Mother." Just as she did to her own beloved Mother so long ago.
She felt a soft kick from the child, prompting her to smile even more. Tears started falling down her face. Sometimes she forgot that this was her reality. No longer was she trapped in a dungeon, or had to hide herself away from people who wanted the Nabateans dead. She was free. Free to live a happy life. She wouldn't give it up for anything. Rhea wiped away her tears and stood up. She rubbed her abdomen as she left to find Catherine. "Hm, to think we still haven't found a name for you little one." She said to her child. "We still have time I'm sure." Rhea was rather far along in her pregnancy, but there was still a bit of time left to go before she'd get to meet the kid. She found Catherine sitting on a chair, reading a book. It was on parenting. Rhea smiled, happy to see Catherine as excited for this as she was.
"Studying...?" Rhea asked her wife with a smile.
Catherine looked up from her book and smiled back. "Yeah..." She said with a blush. "I... don't wanna let you or the kid down..."
Rhea put her hand on Catherine's. "You're gonna do great, I'm sure. The fact that you're trying your best means a lot. I'm sure our young one will agree."
Catherine stood up and put her book down. "It's just... you know me. I've never had to take care of a kid. I've had to fight and kill but..." She sighed. "You were practically a mother to all of Fodlan. I'm sure you'll do great. As for me... I just don't know."
Rhea frowned. She understood where she was coming from, but she couldn't help but disagree. "You think too highly of me Catherine."
Catherine shook her head. "I think of you just as highly as you deserve. You took care of me, took care of Cyril, took care of Fodlan for so long..." She had been taking care of Fodlan long before Catherine was even born after all.
Rhea walked up to Catherine and placed a hand on her shoulder before kissing her on the cheek. "And you took care of me... You protected me. You protected Fodlan during your time with the knights. You did all that because you believed in me. Because you loved me. I'm sure that'll extend to our baby too. So what if you're not perfect, neither am I. You've done plenty of good for me, and I'll never forget that."
Catherine couldn't suppress a bit of a smile. Despite their years together, being praised by her beloved wife never failed to make her happy. She knew that Rhea thought highly of her, however hearing it always made her heart flutter. "I'll take your word for it..."
"You'll see in due time."
Catherine crouched down and put her hand on Rhea's abdomen before rubbing it. "Hey there kiddo. How you doing? I'm so excited to meet you. I promise to protect you and your Mama. I won't die for either of you, because how could I protect you then? No, all 3 of us are gonna live a long time. You both are gonna be so happy and so safe, but leave it to me." She then looked up at the former archbishop. "Um... did we ever talk about what the kid's gonna call us?"
Rhea tapped her chin. "Um... I don't think we have..." She said a bit sheepishly.
"Well... I don't think I care what they call me. Why don't you choose?" The kid could call her Dad for all she cared.
"I..." Rhea blushed. "I think I'd like to be called 'Mother.' It's… a title I've always wanted."
Catherine nodded. "I think Mom is fine with me." She replied. She then stood back up and looked into Rhea's eyes. "We're gonna do great. If you think we will, then we will."
"Right... I agree."
The two stepped closer to each other staring into each other's eyes. They had come a long way from their days as archbishop and knight. Now they were just two women madly in love. Of course, they'd loved each other even before the war. But with Rhea's position, it was hard for her to actually express that to Catherine or to pursue a relationship with her. She felt it'd be unprofessional, so she kept her feelings to herself. If there was someone she thanked the war for, it allowed her to marry the love of her life. She wouldn't trade her new family for anything. They leaned in, and kissed.
"Ugh..."
The two looked towards the noise only to find young Cyril cringing, prompting the two women to blush. They looked away from him as well as each other.
"Cyril... what brings you here?" Rhea asked, being the first to speak up in spite of her embarrassment.
"Hi Lady Rhea! Hi Catherine!" Cyril said, perking up. "I just wanted to check on you two."
"Fine, fine, everything's fine!" Catherine replied. "How long have you been here anyway?"
"Long enough to see the kiss at least..." Cyril snarked. He walked up to Rhea and embraced her in a hug, before doing the same to Catherine. "How much longer until we meet the baby?"
"We should have another two months." Rhea answered. "Are you excited to meet your younger sibling?" Rhea asked teasingly.
Cyril looked flustered, but then nodded. Despite his sporadic appearances due to him now living his own life, he had admitted in the past that he sees both of the women as mothers. Rhea was rather happy about both of these, being seen as Cyril's mother, and Cyril living his own life. Even if it made her a bit sad to see him leave, she'd rather he be away and happy than with her and not allowed to grow and change. Of course, she felt the same way about her incoming child.
"Don't be so embarrassed kid. I'd love for you to meet them too." Catherine reassured.
"Do we know the gender?" Cyril asked. He wasn't sure if he'd rather have a younger brother or a younger sister.
"Not yet." Catherine answered. "We're fine either way, so we figured we may as well let it be a surprise."
"That's fair. So you don't have a name yet either I assume?" He asked.
"Oh... yes, we still haven't figured that part out." Rhea admitted. "We played with a few names like Cassandra or Sothis if they're a girl, since Catherine isn't using the former name anymore. Catherine wasn't sure if she wanted a kid named after her, and... I want to move on from what happened. So I feel naming them after Mother would just make it harder. Not to mention, that's a me issue, an issue I don't wish to force onto our child." She'd always have Sothis in her heart, but she knew it was past time for her to work through her trauma.
"We've played with some Nabataean names too, but none have stuck out to us yet, as much as I'd love to have a name based on Rhea's culture." Catherine added.
"I see." Cyril said. "...Do you mind if I suggest a name?"
"Not at all." Catherine answered with a smile. She didn't really care who came up with the name, as long as it happened before birth leaving them caught with their pants down.
"You could always use an Almyran name." Cyril suggested. Over the years he found himself getting a bit more attached to his heritage. "So that way we'd match." He mumbled a bit, still embarrassed. "I know Cyril isn't an Almyran name specifically, but I still think it'd be cool."
Catherine and Rhea looked at each other, and looked back at Cyril with a smile. "That could work." Catherine said. "I'm sure you two will be great friends."
"Are there any names in particular that you're thinking of?" Rhea asked. She had faith in her adoptive son to come up with something special.
"Hm..." Cyril started thinking. He knew that there was no guarantee that they'd use any name he picked, but he still wanted to try as hard as he could, so his little sibling wouldn't be made fun of. "What about... Sabah? It means morning. It's a new chapter in your lives, and even in the world. This'll be the first Nabataen human hybrid baby right? At least, I don't think there's any others. It's unisex too, so you don't have to worry about the baby's gender."
"Oh..." Rhea clasped her hands together. "Sabah... I love it."
"I do too." Catherine agreed. "Sabah..." She put her hand on top of her wife's stomach. "What do you think kiddo? You like the name Sabah?"
The baby of course didn't respond, not that anyone expected them to. "They don't seem mad I guess." Cyril said with a bit of a laugh.
"We'll definitely keep that name in mind Cyril." Rhea told him. "It's lovely, as is your logic."
Cyril blushed. "It's nothing... it just popped in my head..."
Rhea and Catherine walked towards Cyril and embraced him. Rhea even kissed him on the top of his head, making him smile. Even so many years later, Cyril still adored Rhea, just as his other Mother Catherine did. They were a bit of an odd family, but none of them minded either. A Nabataen, an Almyran, and a woman of Faerghus. Some would look at them strangely, but they were past the point of caring. As long as they had each other, nothing else mattered.
Cyril loved Catherine about as much as he loved Rhea, now that the two were married. Not that it was out of obligation, the two never disliked each other. However, once Catherine left the knights and Cyril left the monestary, the two grew closer and closer despite their distance. He'd never forget all that his mothers did for him. And he knew that they'd do all they could for his little sibling too. He just hoped he'd be a good big brother, but he knew that if he brought it up, the two would reassure him. He knew exactly what they'd say, so he just kept it to himself. Just the thought helped ease his mind.
They eventually separated, and Cyril stayed for the rest of the day. They talked about many things, like Sabah and how the old students were doing. Cyril would have to return to his life eventually, but for now, he was just happy to spend time with his Mothers.
