Hello guys Canguela here!
Welcome to my first story. Not Going to lie, I'm super excited but also super nervous. I've been juggling with the idea of writing a Pokémon story for a while, but I've finally decided to start writing it.
As I mentioned, this is my first story so there will be mistakes, just be patient. As time goes on my writing will definitely improve.
This will be an Adventure fic, and in the FUTURE there will be romance.
Also, towards the end of this chapter there will be a dark and sensitive scene that involves torture. It's nothing crazy, but fair warning.
Also, I don't own Pokémon so please Game freak don't sue me. I'm already poor as it is.
Without further ado, let the story begin!

"Ash Ketchum is 10 p.m. and you are still not asleep. If you don't turn off the tv right this instance I won't make your favorite breakfast tomorrow!" Delia Ketchum screamed from the living room downstairs.
"Aww, but mom I can't help it! The conference finals is going on right now." Replied a 13-year-old Ash Ketchum.
"I understand sweetie, but if you sleep late, which you already are, then you will be very tired tomorrow. Do you really want to risk oversleeping and lagging behind just because you decided to watch the conference finals?" Delia countered.
'She's right, I can't risk it. Especially, since that'll put me behind Gary freaking Oak. I'll die before I let Gary beat me.'
"You're right mom! I'll go to sleep now."
"Thank you, Honey. Sweet dreams!"
'I can't believe my son is already 13. I still remember when I cradled him in my arms for the first time. When my hands caressed his stubby fingers. When my auburn eyes met his brown, suddenly, all those sleepless nights with extreme tiredness, headaches, joint and back pains were all worth it. The hours I endured excruciating pain following the 9 months were inexpressible. I wanted to die. However, I knew that I needed to stay strong. For this precious gift depended on me for life. I was all this boy had. For him I would move heaven and earth. For him I would fight Arceus himself if I needed to. For him… for him.
That day I made a promise. I would do everything in my power to prepare him not only for his inevitable Pokémon journey, but also for life. I would teach him everything I could, to maximize his chance of survival…. Survival, such a simple concept yet so complex. What does it mean to survive? Is surviving the same as living? I mean if people survive then obviously, they're living, but is living surviving? I didn't really know at the time, but over these last years I've come to my own conclusion on what encompasses survival and living. Tomorrow he'll start his own journey, not only to collect badges, but to learn for himself what it means to live. Tomorrow will the beginning of his journey of what it means to be Ash Ketchum.'
"Oh, Mew please protect my son."
If Delia had looked up to the night sky, she would have noticed a particular star twinkle twice before going back to normal.
The next morning- 7 am
"Ash Ketchum is 7 am, if you don't wake up right now, you're going to miss breakfast." Delia shouted from the kitchen.
"Coming mom, almost ready."
As I finished putting on my shoes, I ran downstairs almost tripping and falling flat on my face.
'wouldn't that have been the most embarrassing way to go. Not by a wild pack of Ursaring or eaten by a Gyarados. No, it was because I tripped over my own shoes because I was too stupid to slow down. Oh, the shame!'
As I ran down the stairs, I was so excited that I told mom I'll eat breakfast after receiving my starter. Before she could even reply I was already bolting out the door.
'Stepping outside, I could see it was a beautiful day. The sun was shining, not a single cloud in sight. Pidgey, Tailows, and even the odd Starly were chirping. Rattatas, and sentrets skittered around. Kids were playing tag outside, elderly people watched from their porches with fond expressions. They ran around without a care in the world. It was peaceful.
Even though this might as well have been the thousandth time being outside, I understood that today wasn't like any other day. Today was the day that my first real step in forging my own path would begin. Over the last 5 years my mom had been adamant, and relentless about preparing me as much as possible for my journey. All that time spent learning how to pitch a tent, how to start a fire in case I didn't have a fire type. That was just the tip of the iceberg too. She'd even asked Professor Oak if he could teach me about Pokémon diet, habitats, species of Pokémon to stay clear from, how to care for injured Pokémon and oneself in case of injury. Five whole years I thought were never going to end. But finally, they had come to an end. Oh, the sweet taste of freedom.'
'As I started running up the hill toward the northwestern part of Pallet Town where Professor Oak's lab was located, I started pondering my options for starters. Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. All three are great. Charmander and later Charizard the draconic fire lizard whose preferred method of attack was overwhelming offense. Then there was Squirtle future Blastoise, a turtle (surprise, surprise) which excelled in defensive maneuvers. Could take hits and keep going. Finally, there was Bulbasaur/ Venusaur, a quadruped toad/ frog like creature with a bulb on its back. It was a balance of the other two. Not quite as offensively inclined as Charmander, or as bulky as Squirtle. However, its true talents lay in misdirection, and traps. Setting up traps to lure in opponents and then punishing them. Then there was the mystery fourth starter. It wasn't from Kanto and had the potential to become as strong as the other three. He still remembered when Professor Oak gave the news that there would be a fourth starter since one family who moved from celadon had a daughter their age, who was also starting her journey. Why they didn't just wait till she received her starter to move, is beyond me. Not my problem though.'
Once I arrived at the door to the Professor's lab, I noticed three other people were already there. The first I noticed was Gary freaking Oak. Wearing his girly purple shirt, blue cargo pants and brown boots. The ever-arrogant smug smile ever present on his ridiculous ugly face. Then there was Nathan, an average looking dude with black hair, a black shirt, black pants, and you guessed it, black tennis shoes. No price for guessing what this guy's favorite color is. However, what he lacked in aesthetically pleasing apparel, he more than made up with his fiery personality. It was a surprise him and Gary weren't best friends since they had similar personalities. At least Nathan wasn't a jerk. Last, but certainly not least there was the new girl. Her shoulder length black hair, and fair skin contrasted nicely with her navy-blue blouse under a white jacket with black plants finished off by her brown boots. While she wasn't exactly a model status in terms of beauty, she wasn't ugly.
"If it isn't ashy boy. Always one step behind me I see. You couldn't even manage to beat me even in this. How pathetic can you be. Honestly, I'm surprised you managed to wake up on time, all by yourself. Or what, did mommy have to wake you up?" Gary freaking Oak taunted.
'Take deep breaths. He's just trying to get under your skin. Don't give him the satisfaction of seeing you react. He's not even worthy of that.'
"How long did it take you to come up with those insults Gare bear. let me guess, five years."
"Tsk, whatever. We'll see who gets the last laugh when I stomp you into the ground with my Squirtle."
It was no surprise which starter Gary wanted. Especially since he's always shouting about wanting to have nothing but the best. In his mind Squirtle is the best.
As I was about to approach the new girl and ask for her name, suddenly Professor Oak came out of his lab, having completely missed the argument.
"Good morning, everyone. I see all you guys are raring to go so I'll try to make this quick. Please come inside."
'As I was walking inside, no matter how many times I walk in here, I can't help but stare in awe at all the machinery, whose purpose he couldn't even begin to guess. The lab was white, pristine, and clean. Which was in contrast to all the busyness that was going on. Numerous lab assistants running to and fro the first and second floor carrying flasks, liquids, which for some reason needed them to be wearing gloves. Some were in computers looking at graphs and murmuring all the while. While others were writing things down on boards with symbols that might as well have been a new language.'
"Alright everyone if I can have your attention, please. On this table you see three poke Balls. They each contain one of the Kanto starters in Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur. They're all going to be powerful if trained effectively so there's no need to fight over which the "best" one is. However, you might have noticed there's four of you and only three poke balls. Don't fret, I have the other one right here on this other table. Now, this one is not from Kanto, but from Johto actually. However, that doesn't mean its weak because of it. It has the same potential as the others.
'As Oak kept talking, I started to wonder what this mystery fourth Pokémon was. If he was being honest with himself, he was leaning towards it. The reason being that he didn't want to start with the generic Kanto starters. He wanted to be different. He wanted to separate himself from the crowd. That's also why he had decided to be selective on the Pokémon he would catch. If he can catch uncommon/ rare Pokémon then that would put him in a better situation in battles, since other trainers wouldn't really know how to counter his team. The rarer they are, the harder it is to prepare for a battle with one. In addition, it also raised his chances of survival. The reason why having a team of uncommon/ rare Pokémon raised the chances of survival is simple. The rarest are often the most powerful. It was no secret that death was a high possibility on the road. While the ranger teams did put markers in the most common routes in the region, there was always the possibility of something bad happening. That's why the league decided to raise the age of when one could start their journey from 10 to 13. This was done in an effort to lessen the number of trainer deaths. Of course, they encouraged families to teach their kids basic survival skills to better prepare them in the meantime. Since obviously, raising the age limit didn't really do anything if the kids didn't know how to survive in the wild. The other reason they increased the age limit was because the older you get, the more mature you become. Or at least that's what the adults say. Personally, he thought that depended on the person. Case in point Gary. He was the same age as him but was so much more immature. Or he was just biased to hate his guts.'
I was thrown out of my musings by Professor Oak asking who wanted to receive the fourth starter. As if on cue, my hand immediately went up. He chuckled.
"Before you choose your starter however, I want to give you guys my personal Invention, The Pokedex. It's an encyclopedia with all sorts of data on Pokémon. For example, gender, current movesets, moves they can learn either through Tm's, breeding, or naturally. Habitats and what kind of Pokémon that can be found there. Plus, info on the Pokémon itself. It can also be used as a personal I.D. Please don't lose these. They're extremely valuable and if lost or stolen they can't be replaced. With that out of the way here you go.
'As Professor Oak started passing them out, I noticed Gary received a blue one, Nathan received a black one(surprise!), I received a red one, and the new girl received a green one.
Well, now we can get on with the starters. Who wants to go first?" Professor asked.
"Out of my way losers. Since I'm the best out of this sorry bunch, it's only natural that I go first." Gary pompously declared.
"Hey, who said you could go first!" Nathan practically yelled.
"Are you deaf or stupid? I said I could go first." Gary countered.
"Now, now Gary please be nice" the Professor tersely said.
"Whatever gramps"
'Gary approached the table and grabbed the poke ball with a raindrop sticker on it. Wonder which starter is that. Out came Squirtle (who could've guessed it).
As Squirtle materialized you could tell he had a smug look on his face as he realized he was chosen first.
'Oh boooooy! Those two being paired together is just begging for a disaster to happen.'
"Alright, Nathan you can go next."
"Wow, thanks professor."
Nathan practically ran to pick up the ball with the fire symbol on it.
"Last but certainly not least, Ashley. Sorry you don't have much of a choice" The Professor awkwardly said.
'Oh, so her name is Ashley. That's cool, I guess.'
"It's ok Professor, Bulbasaur was the one I wanted either way."
"Well, that's a relief!"
"Are you ready for your starter Ash?" Oak asked.
"Sure am Professor Oak!"
As I pressed the release button, I couldn't help but imagine all the wonderful things we were going to experience on our journey. The hardships, and joys. When the Pokémon materialized it was revealed to be a Swinub.
"Oh wow! Hey there Swinub. My name is Ash Ketchum. I want to become a Pokémon Master one day. I promise that I'll make you the strongest Mamoswine in the entire world. Will you accompany me on my journey?"
'I wonder what the boy means by Pokémon master. The idea of becoming the strongest Mamoswine does interest, and appeal to me. Also, the fact that he asked if I wanted to come does show that he cares about me more than just what he can get out of me. Plus, he looks like a cool guy!
"Swi, Swinub!" Swinub excitedly ran up.
"Okay, Swinub listen, I'm about to scan you with this Pokedex. It won't hurt I promise."
Swinub is small porcine Pokémon. Living in frigid temperatures. Swinub is covered in dense, brown, striped hair to keep it warm. The hair is so shaggy that it often covers its tuft-like small legs, making it appear like a legless lump. Swinub's eyes appear as if they are perpetually closed.
This Swinub is male.
Swinub's current moveset is Tackle, mud slap, powder snow.
Egg move: Icicle Crash(locked)
Ability: Thick fat (Halves the damage taken from ice and fire attacks)
"Wow aren't you a tough little guy!
"Ha! even when it involves chance, you still can't beat me Ashy boy!" Gary boasted.
"Don't listen to him Ash, he's just jealous that you got a rare Pokémon from Johto." Nathan defended.
"What did you say punk! Do you want to get beaten down too! Gary countered.
"Settle down boys, Gary, I told you to stop instigating them." The Professor intervened.
"Tsk, whatever."
'Gary didn't say anything else, but he was giving us the most heated glare he could muster. If looks could kill, then all of us would've been dead that instant.'
"Anyway, you're all free to go. I would recommend y'all go say goodbye to your families before heading out. I'm expecting great things from all of you!
As I made my way towards my house, I saw Nathan and Ashley Walk towards their own houses too, but Gary stayed back talking to Professor Oak. When I arrived home, I saw that breakfast was completed and the table set up and ready.
"Finally! I was beginning to think you had already left on your journey honey."
"You know I would never skip on your cooking mom. No matter how excited I am to begin my journey."
"Well, don't leave me in suspense, who is your starter?"
"I'll just show you. Come on out Swinub."
As Swinub appeared, my mom started gushing about how cute he was. Showering him with praise after praise. Eventually, Swinub started to feel a little bit antsy due to how overwhelming my mom's energy was getting.
As I dug into the food, I couldn't help but start feeling nervous about my upcoming journey. Sure, I was confident in my ability to survive in the wild, however so many things could happen outside of my control that could quite literally spell the end of me. In the end, I made the decision to not to dwell on it and start doubting myself.
"Are you excited about starting your journey honey?"
"I am mom, I'm just a little nervous about it, that's all."
"Good. If you're nervous then that means you're aware of the dangers. And if you're aware of the dangers then that means you'll be careful and not make stupid decisions. Just remember honey, life is more than just living, and living more than surviving."
"You've always said that mom, but I'm not sure what you mean by that. To me living and surviving are the same thing."
"In due time my son. In due time. You're still only 13. I don't expect you to have an answer yet."
"Anyway, I see you've finished eating your breakfast, will you be heading out soon?"
"Yeah I plan on leaving once I double check I have all the essentials."
"Alright honey. Just don't forget to call me every time you reach a city."
"Will do mom!"
'As he ran upstairs trying to double check everything, I couldn't help but shed a tear. My baby boy is leaving. As he prepares to leave home a myriad of emotions swirl through my mind, creating a complex tapestry of thoughts and feelings:
Pride: She feels immensely proud of the person her son has become. She reminisces about the milestones he has achieved, from his first steps to when he finished his pseudo internship with the Professor, and she marvels at the young man he has grown into.
Joy: Amidst the sadness of his departure, there is a sense of joy knowing that her son is embarking on a new chapter. She envisions the opportunities and adventures that await him, and she feels happy knowing that he is spreading his wings and pursuing his dreams.
Worry: Beneath the surface, there is an undercurrent of worry. She frets about his safety and well-being, wondering if he will remember to eat well, stay out of harm's way, and make responsible choices when faced with challenges.
Sadness: The impending emptiness of the house weighs heavily on her heart. She knows that things will never be quite the same once her son leaves, and she mourns the loss of the daily interactions, laughter, and warmth that he brings to their home.
Anticipation: Despite her sadness, there is a sense of anticipation for the future. She looks forward to the visits, phone calls, and occasional surprises that will keep their bond strong, even as he ventures out into the world.
Love: Above all else, her thoughts are consumed by love. She loves her son fiercely, unconditionally, and endlessly. As he prepares to leave, she holds onto the memories they have shared and the love that binds them together, knowing that no distance can diminish the bond between a mother and her child.'
"Alright mom, I'm all set." Ash exclaimed as he ran down the stairs.
"Do you have your tent, knife, matches, rope, sleeping bag, poke balls, first aid kit, potions flashlights with extra batteries, food, water purifier, water-proof boots, rain jacket, and extra pair of clothes?"
"Yes mom, like I said I'm all set."
"Just checking sweety. Anyway, good luck on your journey."
"I don't need luck with how much I've prepared mom, and especially now that I have Swinub."
'Good boy.' She sent him the brightest smile she could muster while waving goodbye as he ran ahead.
"Come on out Swinub. Hey Buddy, I was wondering if you wanted to walk with me as we take our first steps towards our goal of being the best.
"Swinub!" the small porcine Pokémon agreed.
"Also, I meant to ask you earlier, but now is as good as time as any. Do you want a nickname?"
"Swi!" replied by nodding his head.
As I listed off names like frostbite, Polar, and Blizzard, all were rejected. He almost settled with blizzard but in the end decided against it. Eventually, I hit the jackpot in Snowstorm. He instantly loved it.
"Alright! Sounds powerful doesn't it? Quite fitting. Since you'll become the most powerful of them all."
As we started walking to the gate that led to route 1, I saw the worst possible thing I could've seen, Gary.
"Would you look at that! It's my lucky day. My first victory on my path to greatness will be you. Lady Fortune must really hate you. Then again, I don't blame her. I hate you too."
"If you want to battle, just say so Gary. Your attempts at insulting me only show how weak you really are."
"I'll make you eat those words. Squirtle lets show these losers what happens when you insult THE Gary Oak."
"Squirt!" the tiny turtle replied while narrowing its eyes at them.
'As both Pokémon stood sizing each other up ready to start the battle, I remembered the lessons that I learned from Professor Oak about the art of battle. He broke them down in steps to make it easier for me to remember them.
'First step is know yours, and your opponent's Pokémon. Their strengths and weaknesses. Not just physiological, but also elemental. Next step is observe. Observe your surroundings. See if you can use anything to your advantage. Also, pay attention to your opponent, and observe their habits. If you see a pattern in their movements anticipate and punish. Then, Observe your own Pokémon. See how he's doing energy wise, and if he has any injuries on his body that could be exploited. Furthermore, maintain momentum: Keep the pressure on your opponent by maintaining offensive momentum and preventing them from setting up their own strategies. Capitalize on successful plays to maintain control of the battle. Lastly, remain composed and focused, even when facing tough opponents or unfavorable situations. Avoid panicking and making hasty stupid decisions that could cost you the match.'
'With Squirtle being a water type he clearly has the elemental advantage. In the physiological sense still Squirtle has the slight edge due to him being bigger. However, in an ironic twist of fate one of its greatest strengths is also its greatest weakness. The shell. Or at least when it's flipped on it. Normally, a Squirtle's shell is very hard and can take quite a bit of damage. Getting harder as it grows and evolves to Wartortle and then Blastoise. Further boosted with the right diet, and training regime. That's why by nature and instinct, the Squirtle line is always inclined to favor defensive maneuvers. For example, retreating inside its shell leaves them invulnerable to most attacks which is further improved with the move rapid spin to deflect them. You add in Toxic, protect and Earthquake for those pesky steel and poison types that are immune to toxic, and you have one of the most infuriatingly difficult tactics to break. That's not even including the bevy of water type attacks at their disposal. The tactic of flipping them on their shells turns that reliability into a liability. The reason is, they never expect their shell to be the target of an attack. Why? Because they know that their shell is their single greatest defensive asset they possess, and they're arrogant in that fact. It's hard to prepare for something one doesn't see coming. True, flipping them is easier said than done, since they won't just let you do it. However, there are ways to make that happen. I just have to figure out a way to distract them long enough to get in close and finishing it. For that I need to slow them down first, otherwise they'll just dodge. And I know just the way.'
"Snowstorm start off with Powder Snow." A flurry of freezing snow made its way towards Squirtle.
"Ha! You're an idiot. Don't you know ice type attacks aren't very effective against water types? This will be easier than I thought. Squirtle take it and retaliate with water gun." A pressurized water blast raced towards Snowstorm hoping to take it out in one hit.
"Snowstorm dodge. Keep using Powder snow but this time aim for the legs and feet. Just don't let the water gun hit you."
"This again, you really are a one trick ponyta. Dodge and then Tail whip Squirtle." Squirtle started wagging its tail in a hypnotic dance hoping that Swinub will be entranced long enough to lower its guard. Ensuring his next hit will hit harder.
As Snowstorm started to fall trance to the hypnotic motion, he heard his trainer call out to him.
"Don't fall for it Snowstorm. Close your eyes and gather your bearings." He heard his trainer encourage him.
As Snowstorm regained his bearings, he saw that other guy and his Squirtle had scowls on their faces. He smirked.
"Powder Snow again Snowstorm. Keep aiming for his legs and feet, but up the power a bit. We need to finish this soon." He unleashed a bigger and faster flurry of snow towards Squirtle.
He knew that in a battle of attrition Squirtle had them beat. That's why they needed to finish this soon before Snowstorm ran out of gas, leaving them vulnerable for a counterattack.
"You never learn Ashy boy. Dodge the Powder snow Squirtle and go for tackle." Gary countered.
'So, he wants to get in close and personal, well too can play that game. I just have to be careful; it looks like Snowstorm is getting tired. He could see his starter's labored breathing, his movements being more sluggish. That doesn't even consider the fact that it is summer. Being the summer meant that it is very hot. Snowstorm's thick fat and all that fur wasn't doing them any favors. I have to figure out a way to counter this issue, otherwise we'll be fighting at a handicap every time. My starter deserves better than that.'
"Keep using Powder snow Snowstorm, but charge in as well."
As Squirtle and Snowstorm were running to pummel each other I noticed that a layer of frost had built up in Squirtle's feet not only slowing him down, but also restricting his movement.
Before I let Gary have any chance of countering I shouted, "Now's our chance Snowstorm, Mud slap and while he's blinded, follow up with Powder snow to harden the mud around his eyes." I shouted, seeing a glimmer of chance to finally finish this battle."
"Use water gun to destroy the ice around your feet Squirtle, then dodge the mud slap" Gary shouted as his eyes widened in understanding the danger that Squirtle was in. It was all for naught. Having been tired down from the battle itself, while taking unnecessary hits due to his trainers' arrogance, Squirtle wasn't strong enough to not only free himself from the snow but also dodge the subsequent mud slap, let alone the Powder snow.
As the mud slap hit its mark, poor Squirtle cried out in pain. Only made worse when the powder snow slammed into his already blind eyes solidifying the mud around them.
"You have to get out of there Squirtle please." Gary practically begged. It wouldn't do him any good, however. The battle was done, and it was only a matter of time before he made it official.
"Tackle." I said with a tone of finality. With a battle cry Snowstorm barreled into Squirtle. "Swiiinub!" Although the tackle attack wasn't enough to finish off the tiny turtle Pokémon, it had done its intended purpose. To flip Squirtle on its shell. As Squirtle realized the situation he was in, all he could do was thrash wildly in a hopeless attempt to right itself.
"Squirtle are you ok buddy? you have to straighten out" Gary shouted with clear panic in his voice. Squirtle couldn't. The reason being several factors.
Ear Disruption: The inner ear contains structures responsible for sensing balance and orientation. When you're flipped upside down, the fluids in the inner ear move, sending confusing signals to your brain about your body's position in space. This can lead to feelings of dizziness or disorientation.
Changes: Your brain is accustomed to interpreting visual cues in a certain orientation. When suddenly flipped upside down, your visual field changes dramatically, which can further confuse your brain and make it difficult to orient yourself.
and Joint Feedback: Your muscles and joints provide feedback to your brain about the position and movement of your body. When flipped upside down, this feedback becomes contradictory to what your brain expects, leading to a sense of disorientation and imbalance.
Then there's the psychological factors. Yes, turtles experience stress, and panic when they are flipped onto their backs. When a turtle is flipped onto its shell, it can become disoriented and feel vulnerable because it's unable to right itself. This situation can trigger a stress response in the turtle, causing it to thrash around or attempt to flip itself back over. In the wild, being stuck on their backs can leave turtles vulnerable to predators, so it's a situation they naturally try to avoid. He could only imagine the raw fear and panic Squirtle must be feeling right now. Why?. Because in the wild vulnerability meant death. It was no wonder that the longer he was in that position, the more panicked and louder his cries became. You could even begin to see tears forming in his eyes. In these moments, he probably truly believed that his life had come to an end. These moments are far more painful than any Thunder he'll probably ever receive.
"Squirtle buddy, what's wrong?" Gary asked with genuine fear in his voice, and not the fear of losing the battle either, but raw, genuine fear for the well-being of his starter.
"What's wrong? Do you not see the state in which your starter is. Return him for goodness' sake!" I shouted with clear anger in my voice.
"Grr, whatever Ashy boy. You got lucky this time, but mark my words, the next time we meet ill show you no mercy." He recalled his starter and ran towards the Professor's lab.
"Great job buddy! I knew you'd win. Just think Snowstorm, that was the first of many victories, and the first step to our legacy." He exclaimed as he raised his fist to the sky.
"Swiiii!" he replied wholeheartedly agreeing with his trainer.
As they approached the gate to leave Pallet town and enter route 1, they couldn't help but stop and stare in awe at the scenery. They were greeted by a picturesque landscape. The route stretched out before, a pathway thickened by huge trees on either side, bordered by lush greenery and dotted with wild Pokémon habitats. As we kept walking, we were greeted at the left, to the shimmering cerulean waves of a river, which sparkled under the gentle sunlight, offering a soothing backdrop to our travels. All forms of birds glided gracefully overhead, their calls mingling with the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks. To the right, a dense forest emerges, its emerald canopy reaching towards the sky. Sunlight filters through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor below. Pokémon dart amongst the foliage, their cries echoing through the trees as they play and forage for food. The air is alive with the scent of fresh grass and wildflowers, carried on a gentle breeze that rustles the leaves and caresses the skin. Butterfree flit from flower to flower, adding splashes of color to the verdant landscape. And this was just Route 1. He could only imagine what kinds of scenery they were going to experience in their journey through Kanto. However, beautiful, or not, the wild was dangerous. He had constantly remind himself not to be fooled by the beauty of nature or they would pay the price. Sure, the main routes were pretty safe, but the off-beaten paths weren't. He understood that if he wanted to capture rare Pokémon, they would have to traverse the non-traditional paths. Paths that hadn't been tamed by humanity. Paths that if they made a single mistake, then they would pay with their life. Fortunately, Route 1 was not one of those paths, so they pushed forward. After 2 hours of walking, the tiny Swinub had gotten really tired of walking that he asked to be returned to its poke ball, but to release him if he was in any form of danger. After walking 2 more hours, he decided it was time for lunch.
"Come on out Snowstorm!" As the small porcine Pokémon materialized, he quickly ran up to his trainer and tackled him.
"Ow buddy, I know you're happy, but you have to be careful, I'm not as sturdy as you. Anyway, I figured is time for lunch, plus I want to talk to you about something too. Do you remember when I told you that I wanted to become a Pokémon Master?"
"Swinub!" he nodded.
"Good, well I was completely serious. However, to become a Pokémon Master I need to have a monstrously powerful team. That's why when I told you I would make you the most powerful Mamoswine in the world, I meant it. Which means that we're going to be training extremely hard and battling a lot. Day in, and day out. It's going to be painful, there will be times when you'll rather quit. In the end, it'll be worth it. Just never forgot buddy, that no matter how hard I push you and our future family, I'm doing that out of love.
"Swii?" He cocked his head to the side to show his confusion.
"How? Well, because the stronger we are, our chances of survival rise too. I don't want you, or any future Pokémon we catch to die a premature death because we weren't prepared. The more we train and battle, the more resilient we become. Why do we need to be strong enough to survive, you ask? The reason for that is because I'm aiming for the top. I need Pokémon that will meet that standard. Which means that we will have to travel the off-beaten path to find them. Unfortunately, it means the deeper we go into these wild areas, the more dangerous they are. That's why often times the rarest are super strong. They need to be if they want to survive. And if we want to find these Pokémon, then naturally that means we have to be strong as well."
"Swi, Swinub?"
"Why are these Pokémon in dangerous areas? Couldn't they just stay in a relatively safer area, that way they don't have to worry as much about surviving. Well, aren't you smart buddy. You have to understand that often times is not their choice. Usually, the parents of said Pokémon mate far away from human settlements because these Pokémon normally don't trust us. They have these pre-conceived notions that all humans are bad. The reason for that is because History Is written in Blood.
In the past, people did unspeakable things to Pokémon. As they became aware of these things, whether that be through word of mouth, or personal experience, they decided to avoid humans at all costs. The idea that humans were terrible, greedy, selfish, and power hungry was perpetuated, and exacerbated by all the wars, poaching, the destruction of their natural habitats, and all the experimentation done on Pokémon. That's why these Pokémon, or at least their ancestors went into hiding. As generations passed, this wall between Pokémon and people began to slowly fall. Eventually Pokémon realized that not all humans were bad and decided to give them a chance to redeem themselves. They didn't regret it. They developed bonds that remained unbroken even unto death. Eventually, the leagues were established not only to showcase and highlight these bonds in the form of Pokémon battle, but also, to fight those who still wish to bring Pokémon more harm. Sadly, these Pokémon never got to see any of that. Or at least they decided not to see. Because their ancestors believed that this was a weak union, a foundation built on sand that would eventually crumble at the first sign of trouble, they were taught the same. Unfortunately, even till this day, those old beliefs still live through the lives of their offspring. That's why when we seek out Pokémon hidden in these places, there's a high possibility that they will still carry those grudges and attack us on sight. We have to be ready Snowstorm. Not only to battle, but more importantly, to prove to them they're wrong about humans. Of course, there's also a chance that they won't be, and genuinely try to give us a chance to prove our worth."
'Honestly, I prefer the latter option, but we'll see.'
"Now let's talk about training exercises that we'll be doing, and the schedule we'll be following. In the mornings for one hour we'll start with Endurance Exercises, such as swimming. Because you're weak to water, in order to increase your tolerance, resistance and stamina you're going to be doing swimming exercises. Of course, when we catch a water Pokémon he'll attack you with water moves too, so just be prepared.
Another way we're going to increase your endurance is through long-distance running/ walking. I noticed in your battle with Squirtle that you tire out quickly. To remedy that you're going to be running or walking a lot.
For the 2nd hour we'll be doing Strength Training, which include digging Practice: In order to prepare you for the move Dig, then you'll be digging through soil, sand, or snow not only to strengthen your muscles, but also as a precursor to learning the move Dig.
Rock Lifting: Your future evolution Mamoswine are known for their monstrous power, not only in charges, but also in lifting. That's why to make your body ready for evolution we are going to need to increase your lifting strength as well.
Finally for the 3rd hour we'll be doing Balance Training: We're going to Practice balancing exercises on uneven terrain or unstable surfaces. This will help you develop better coordination and stability, which are essential for battles and traversing different terrains. That will be the morning training. We'll get up between seven & eight. Then we'll do the training exercises up until lunchtime. Then, we'll be battling for the following hours until supper time around 5. Then we'll finish the day with moves, or techniques training. Whether that be perfecting or improving current moveset, or learning, and combining moves. That will be until about 9 to 10 pm. Then we'll go to bed and repeat the process the following days. Unless of course, we battle have a gym battle. In which case, we'll rest that day, from training at least. Sound good?"
"Swinub, Swiiii!" he nodded.
"Haha, it looks like that with all the talking we forgot to eat. It's ok we can start now. You're going to need the energy, believe me. Since there's a river right here, we'll start with swimming practice. We'll begin in shallow water then move into the deeper areas as we progress. Don't worry, I'll join as well."
After about 40 min the pair had finished eating. And were ready to start training.
"Alright Snowstorm let's get to it!" As we jumped into the water both of us started shivering, but in the case of Swinub he was in much more pain. Due to his part ground typing, and his thick fur it meant that he's much more susceptible to it. The reason is because their thick fur could become waterlogged, reducing their mobility and insulation against the cold. Which in turn, sends a shock to his system. However, after a few minutes, the pair were slightly getting accustomed to the change in temperature.
"Do you see that rock in the distance Snowstorm?" he nodded. "Ok, were going to use that as a marker and all we're going to do is run back and forth between that rock and here. Once the hour is up then we'll take a short break than start strength training. Alright, let's do this!"
Afte an hour, the pair was exhausted. "Who would've thought swimming was this exhausting. Then again, swimming is a full body work out. Let's take a 5-minute break, I need to change my clothes anyway…...OK! Let's begin with strength training. Let me just get my rope and strap this boulder on top of you, and then you can start running from here till that huge rock over there. Start of slow then increase in speed. We'll do this for an hour or until you can't go anymore. While you do that Snowstorm, I'll be doing push-ups. I can't slack off either you know."
Once the hour was done, one could see both trainer and Pokémon sweating profusely, and panting. Trying to keep the contents of food inside their bodies. "Ok, that's a huge wakeup call. I didn't even know I was in this bad of a shape. Anyway, I'll return you for now buddy. I'm going to continue walking towards Viridian. I'll either release you for supper or a battle, so be ready either way."
"Swi!" he nodded.
As I continued to walk, I noticed that the surrounding trees seemed to be getting thicker. Even more so than the beginning of the route. While not quite a forest, it was the closest thing to one. After a few more hours of walking, it was time for supper. Unfortunately, there wasn't a single trainer in sight. He wasn't completely surprised, but he had been hopeful of finding at least a few trainers to battle. Then again, the only reason for any trainers to be in this area of Kanto was if they were going to visit Professor Oak. There wasn't a particularly good reason to visit this area other than that fact. Pallet Town wasn't Celadon.
"Come on out Snowstorm." It's time for supper buddy. As they began eating the extra sandwiches that his mom had made, he started to realize that pretty soon they were going to need to either rely on trainer meals or start hunting their own food. At least while they were on the road. In Each option has its own pros and cons. It was just a matter of what they were willing to do. Eventually, we finished eating and starting to walk again towards Viridian city. After a few more hours of walking we decided to camp. It was already 8 pm and we need to get some training in before going to bed.
"Come here Snowstorm. For the next two hours we're going to be working on making Mud slap, and Powder snow stronger. I'm sure you've noticed that Mud Slap is a pretty weak move. However, while it lacks in power it makes up for its utility in disrupting the opponent's ability to land attacks, as well as a good diversion, which you might remember with your battle with Squirtle. With that said, tonight we're going to start by making it stronger. That way we can use it for more than just a diversion tactic, but more importantly this will set the foundation for when you start learning the move Mud bomb, which essentially is an upgraded version of Mud slap. Eventually, my goal for you is to be hurling multiple mud projectiles at opponents, rather than one at time." Just like Mud slap, Powder snow training will help speed up the process to learn Icy wind later down the road. While you work on that, I'm going to be going over the Pokedex to make sure I know the ins and outs of every Pokémon we might encounter, plus the terrain we're going to be traversing."
After the 2 hours were up, Snowstorm had made pretty decent progress with both moves. After a demonstration of the moves, it was obvious that the moves were faster and stronger, but also the speed at which they were cast. Satisfied with the days training, it was time to go to bed.
The night went by quickly, having being exhausted by yesterday's training both trainer and Pokémon slept like a log. "Let's first eat breakfast then we'll look for a pond or river so we can start on endurance training." As they finished their breakfast, which consisted of sandwiches and regular Pokémon food, and packed up the campsite, they made their way deeper into the pseudo forest hoping to find a pond or river. After about 45 minutes of searching their prayers were answered, and a river stood before them. "Alright Snowstorm let's get started. Just like last time we'll swim for about an hour. If we need to, we can take small breaks in-between." After the hour was done both of them were panting exhaustively. "Let's take a 10-minute break buddy, I'm exhausted… Now we'll move on to strength training. Yesterday I did push-ups, but because I have to let my arms rest to avoid injury, I'll do core exercises today. You focus on your digging, in preparation for Dig. Once the hour was done, both parties were once again the pair were laying on their backs breathing heavily. "Normally, we would go to balance training right now buddy, but I think we should rest for this hour since I can see neither you nor I can move right now, let alone exercise. So what we're going to do is eat lunch early and have an afternoon with just battling. Hopefully, we'll find a lot of trainers to make up for yesterday." As they finished eating and started to continue walking, he noticed that the trees were getting slimmer, there wasn't as many of them and the forest was clearing. Signifying that they were getting closer to civilization, and consequently more trainers. After walking for 45 minutes they noticed a trainer tending to his Pokémon. The Pokémon appeared to be a rattata, although he noticed the Pokémon had a purple hue on his face signifying it had been poisoned. As the boy finished applying the antidote, I could tell Rattata wasn't all that damaged. Making up his mind he approached the boy. "Hey, my name is Ash, and this is my buddy Snowstorm. Would you care for a battle?
"Sure! The name is Joey by the way. We just finished beating another guy with his Weedle, so were fired up and raring to go. We'll make you our second win of the day. Is $100 poke good for you? I need to save up for food." "Sure, I need to do the same anyway."
There's various reasons why trainers bet money in Pokémon battles, and it's because is a good Incentive for Trainers: Offering a monetary reward incentivizes trainers to put their best effort into battles. It adds stakes to the competition and motivates trainers to train harder and improve their skills.
Supporting Trainer Lifestyles: Trainers often lead a nomadic lifestyle, traveling from town to town to challenge Gym Leaders and compete in Pokémon leagues. Money earned from battles helps cover travel expenses, food, lodging, and other necessities.
Economic Aspect: Money earned from battles contributes to the local economy by circulating funds through various channels, such as Pokémon Centers, Poké Marts, and other businesses.
"Come here Snowstorm, Rattata won't be as strong or as durable as Squirtle, but he will definitely be faster. Rattata's are pretty frail, so one or two good physical hits will be enough to take him out. We have to slow him down or tire him out first though. We'll try to slow him down like we did with Squirtle, and If that doesn't work then we'll just tire him out enough to get in close and finishing it. Don't take unnecessary hits though. If you can dodge than do so. I believe in you buddy." "Swii!" Swinub replied.
After about 5 minutes of running circles around Swinub the rattata finally was slowing down enough for Snowstorm to land two solid hits in and finish the match. "Wow, you're really strong. Didn't think Swinub would put up much of a fight. Thank you though, you showed me where I should improve, and that I have a long way to go." After receiving the money the exuberant boy left. A couple of hours, six battles deep, and quite a bit of cash later we decided to rest a little bit before continuing. Fortunately, he had packed quite a bit of snacks to hold him out till supper, which was still a few hours away. "You're doing good buddy. So far, we've managed to win every battle, however that won't always be the case. We just have to remember to use our losses as learning experiences. Enough of that for now, let's continue looking for more opponents."
2 hours, 4 battles, and about 400 poke dollars later, it was finally supper time. They had managed to win three of the four battles. They unfortunately lost the last one, but it was because of inexperience and Snowstorm's fatigue. Still, to win 10 of the 11 battles as a rookie was an amazing accomplishment. They just have to make sure to not let it get to their head. They wouldn't want to become another Gary after all. "It's time for supper buddy, after that you'll work on improving your moves again."
4 hours later, they were getting ready to camp and rest. They were happy with the progress they were seeing. Snowstorm's powder snow, and mud-slap were definitely stronger, and the time to execute them was lessened considerably. A few more days of practice and he would be strong enough to learn mud bomb and icy wind, or at least the basic form of them. They were quite far away from mastering them, however. That's ok though, there was no need to rush. Mastering the basics was crucial, or at least that's what Professor Oak said.
"Let's get to bed buddy, I think tomorrow will be the last day of traveling, I've noticed that there are a lot more trainers running around than normal, and the route seems to have cleared up, sure signs of civilization nearby. We should reach Viridian city by night. Then, we can finally sleep in a proper bed, and eat a proper meal. I'm sure you're just as tired as me eating this basic food, and trainer meals. Once we enter Viridian Forest, we should look for berries, to add a little variety to our foods and hopefully improve the taste of them too. Plus, it will add more nutritional value as well, which is always good. Well, good night, buddy, wake me if anything comes up, ok?" "Swii!"
"Uaah! man, I really need to sleep in a bed soon, sleeping in a sleeping bag just isn't cutting it anymore. Fortunately, they were really close to Viridian, one more day of travel and they would sleep like kings. Let's pack up Snowstorm, we have a full day of training, and traveling and I want to get to Viridian as soon as possible. Grrrrrr… Hehe, not before we eat breakfast though."
As we finished eating, and started to make our way to Viridian, I noticed there were quite a bit of trainers on the road training or battling. It made sense though, everyone wanted to win, and no one becomes a winner by being lazy. "You know what buddy; I think today we'll skip the training exercises and make it a full day of battling. Hopefully, there will be enough trainers for us to battle.
Many, many, hours, battles, and a whole lot of cash later there were sweaty, dirty, tired, ad more importantly ecstatic. Who would've thought battling was so much fun. Sure, it was tiring but to feel the thrill of battle, to see creatures summon elemental attacks of fire, ice, and electricity so close by, it was intoxicating. Honestly, he was getting addicted, and it seemed his starter was of the same mind. We need to do this more often. Maybe we should make it tradition, that we should separate a day to do nothing but battling. What do you say buddy? "Swii!" Swinub nodded ecstatically. We can figure out the logistics later, for now I'm starving. We should get some supper, and then continue walking towards Viridian. The last guy who we battled said we're only two hours away.
"Look Snowstorm, there's Viridian city, we got to hurry." As they made their way to the southern exit of the city he were greeted by a pair of officer Jenny's. "Identification please." "Why… I didn't know I had to show identification when I entered a city." "Normally you wouldn't, however lately there's been rumors of shady activities, and the Gym leader thought it best to ask for identification when you enter, and also when you leave so as to maybe deter said individuals from attempting anything foolish. Tighten security if you will. At least that's one of the rumors." "What do you mean, is there more." "Yeah, apparently there's a huge Heracross residing in Viridian Forest, who is supposed to be as big as a slaking. A load of Tauros crap if you ask me, but there's a lot of idiots who believe it and go seeking to capture it. They come back empty handed of course, but it's starting to get annoying since nobody can seem to shut up about it. Anyway, you're all cleared. Have a nice stay."
'Interesting, a giant Heracross huh. Maybe, I should ask around the city to see what the people say. No matter how farfetched a story might seem, there's always a hint of truth in them. More on that tomorrow though. Right now, I need to shower, and have a talk with Snowstorm. But first, I have to find the Pokémon Center.'
As I made my way inside the center, I was greeted by Nurse Joy, who happily checked on Swinub, and gave me the keys to my room. Thankfully, the league had decided to give trainers free housing in Pokémon centers, and free food. This was made in an effort to incentivize people on becoming trainers. Not only that though, but also to promote health and well-being. Pokémon battles can be physically demanding for both trainers and their Pokémon. Access to nutritious food and comfortable lodging ensures that trainers and their Pokémon can rest and recover adequately between battles. This promotes the overall health and well-being of trainers and their Pokémon, allowing them to perform at their best during challenges. Plus, if trainers and Pokémon were healthy and strong then the likelihood of them dying was reduced significantly. They were fortunate enough to live in relatively peaceful times, the only reason for that is because the people at the top were good, and caring.
"Have a good night Mr. Ketchum and enjoy your stay."
"Room 202, room 202, where are you room 202?... Ahhh there you are. Come on out Snowstorm. Listen here buddy, tomorrow we're going to be taking it easy. I know these last few days we've been pushing hard so it's important that we take adequate amounts of rest. We're going to be going to explore the city, restock a few essentials we're going to need, but also try to inquire about the rumor of a huge Heracross in Viridian Forest. Apparently, there's been a huge buzz about it these last few days. We'll do training exercises, battle some trainers who are willing so as to not let our progress go to waste. Don't worry, we'll get more adventure and training once we go inside the forest. We have to be in top form when we go seeking the Heracross. We'll spend a couple days here then we'll head out ok. For now let's sleep."
Ash Ketchum awoke with a start, the morning sunlight filtering through the windows of the Pokémon Center room. He blinked, momentarily disoriented, before the memories of yesterday's battles flooded back. Swinub, nestled comfortably beside him, stirred awake with a soft yawn. Ash: (Stretching) "Morning, Snowstorm! Ready for the day? (Chirping happily) "Swii!" With a grin, Ash swung his legs off the bed and stood up, feeling the excitement of a new day in his bones. He quickly got dressed in his usual attire—jeans, a red and white jacket, and his trusty cap—then grabbed his backpack. Ash: (Patting Swinub's head) "Let's go get some breakfast, buddy. I'm starving!" Together, they made their way downstairs to the bustling dining area of the Pokémon Center. Trainers and their Pokémon filled the room, chatting over breakfast and preparing for another day of adventures.
Nurse Joy: (Smiling warmly as they approach) "Good morning, Ash! Good morning, Swinub! Did you sleep well?"
Ash: (Grinning) "Morning, Nurse Joy! We did. We're ready to eat though. We're starving."
Nurse Joy: (Chuckling) "Of course! You can get whatever you want."
After choosing the meal, we started walking towards an empty table.
As they walked, Ash couldn't help but overhear snippets of conversations from nearby trainers.
Trainer 1: "Did you hear about that giant Heracross in Viridian Forest?"
Trainer 2: "Yeah, apparently some kids from town went looking for it. I wonder if they'll actually find anything."
Trainer 3: "I heard it's as big as a Snorlax! Imagine battling a Pokémon like that!"
"Hey sorry to interrupt, but I couldn't help but overhear you guys were talking about a special Heracross. If so, do y'all have any idea where I would find it?" "Sorry, we don't really know where to find it but tomorrow we're going to go seeking it out. I'm Arlene by the way, and these guys are Matthew and Peter. Nice to meet ya!" "I'm Ash Ketchum, and this is my partner Snowstorm. Nice to meet you guys too. Anyway, I have to go, but thank you either way."
Deciding to give up for now, the duo made their way towards the Poke Mart to buy the things they were going to need for the road. He had decided to buy extra food since last time they were cutting it close. Well, trainer meals were hardly food, but sacrifices had to be made. Leaving the Mart, Near the edge of the town square, Ash overheard a group of seasoned trainers swapping stories of their encounters in the forest. Intrigued, he approached them, his eyes bright with curiosity. "Excuse me," Ash began, addressing the group. I couldn't help but overhear you talking about Viridian Forest. Have you ever heard of a giant Heracross living there?"
The trainers exchanged knowing glances before one of them, a weathered man with a backpack adorned with badges, spoke up. "Ah, the giant Heracross," he said with a grin. It's a legend that's been passed down among trainers for generations. They say it's the guardian of Viridian Forest, a Pokémon of immense strength and wisdom."
Ash's eyes widened with excitement. "Do you know where we can find it?"
The trainer scratched his chin thoughtfully. "Finding the giant Heracross isn't easy, young trainer. It's said to dwell deep within the heart of Viridian Forest, far from the beaten paths. Look for clues—marks on trees, the sound of buzzing wings, and the presence of other Pokémon. But be warned, the forest is vast, and not all who seek the giant Heracross find it. In fact, no one who has gone searching for it has found it. Even more unfortunate, a lot of those trainers haven't returned at all. If you decide to pursue, you will be on your own. If you want my advice kid, I recommend you don't even try. I can tell you are a rookie and with only one Pokémon, this is literal suicide. I in good conscience can't let a kid walk to his grave without at least a warning."
"Thank you for the advice and the warning, but it's not needed." Determined to prove himself and uncover the truth behind the legend, Ash thanked the trainers for their insights and set off towards Viridian Forest, his heart racing with anticipation.
30 Minutes later- Viridian Forest
As they were entering the forest they couldn't help but stop and stare in awe at the scenery. The sun cast dappled patterns of light through the dense canopy of the Forest, illuminating the forest floor with patches of golden warmth. His backpack snug against his shoulder, and his trusty Swinub marveled at the vibrant tapestry of nature that surrounded them. The forest greeted them with a symphony of natural wonders—rustling leaves, trickling streams, and the occasional flutter of wings as Pokémon darted among the trees. Ash marveled at the diversity of Pokémon they encountered—Caterpie nibbling on leaves, Weedle weaving intricate silk threads, and a mischievous Pidgey that swooped down to playfully tug on Ash's hat before darting away with a playful chirp.
"Snowstorm, can you feel it?" Ash murmured; his voice filled with awe. "There's something extraordinary waiting for us in this forest."
Swinub's ears twitched with excitement as he snorted in agreement. The air was alive with the chatter of Pokémon hidden among the foliage—Pidgey cooing softly, Caterpie rustling in the underbrush, and the occasional playful chirp of a nearby Oddish.
"We have to remember to leave markers to make our way to the main path, okay buddy. As they ventured deeper into Viridian Forest, Ash's curiosity grew with each step. The forest seemed to pulse with ancient energy, its towering trees adorned with vines and moss that spoke of years spent in harmony with the land. The scent of earth and ferns mingled with the sweet fragrance of wildflowers, creating a symphony of aromas that filled the air. "Look at this place, Snowstorm," Ash whispered in wonder, gazing up at the towering trees. "It's like stepping into a different world. This place feels alive, somehow." The more they walked deeper into the heart of Viridian Forest, Ash noticed subtle signs—broken branches, large footprints pressed into the soft earth, and a gentle buzzing that seemed to resonate through the air like a song. Swinub, always alert, chirped softly as it sensed the presence of something.
"Did you notice that Snowstorm?" Ash asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "There's something out there." Swinub nodded, its tusks shaking with anticipation. Together, they followed the trail of clues that led them to a fork on the road. On the left side a clear path marked by rangers, or other league personnel clearly for the purpose of guiding trainers on the "right" path. The other, a terrain that was clearly more rugged, the ground uneven, fallen logs that skirted around ancient tree roots. The forest seemed to close in around them, enveloping them in a cocoon of greenery that hummed with life. Remembering their promise, they steeled their nerves and turned right, never looking back.
They followed a winding path that led them away from the well-trodden routes frequented by trainers. Here, the forest grew denser, the undergrowth thicker, and the sunlight filtered through the canopy in speckled patterns that danced on the forest floor. Minutes turned into an hour. One hour turned into hours and yet nothing. At least nothing except dense undergrowth that obscured their path, a sudden rain shower that turned the forest floor into a muddy quagmire. Darkness that seemed to envelop them and swallow them whole. They could tell it was almost nighttime. Were once was sunlight that speckled through the cracks of the canopy of the trees with a golden hue, now they seemed dark, barely seeping through. Plus, he had an eerie feeling. Oddly, there weren't Pokémon around. By now they should've been attacked by wild Pinsir, Scyther, and even Beedrill. These Pokémon were highly territorial. Hell, even Rattata should've tried to steal their food by now. Yet, none of that had happened. Something was definitely fishy. Deciding not to dwell on it too much he turned to his starter.
"It's getting late buddy; we should stop for the day and eat. Real soon it's going to be pitch black, plus we've been walking all day, and we haven't eaten anything. Even worst, Pokémon tend to be more aggressive at night. I'd rather not have to fight a horde of angry wild Pokémon when we're this vulnerable. We'll go back to the main path, camp and try again tomorrow."
As they were about to go back to the main path, in the distance they heard voices. They were faint, but they were definitely there. "Do you hear that Snowstorm?" Swinub nodded. Let's go check out what's going on. As they walked towards where the noise was coming from, they were greeted with a horrendous sight. Team Rocket, their black uniforms, and the big bright red R stark against the verdant backdrop, surrounding a makeshift cage that contained a multitude of Pokémon. Ranging from common Pokémon like Caterpie, Pidgey, and Weedle to rarer Pokémon like Pinsir, breelom, skorupi, to the exceptionally rare Larvesta. Why on earth was a Larvesta in viridian forest of all places was beyond him. A question to ask Professor Oak another day he supposed. That's if he made it out alive. However, what caught his attention wasn't the Larvesta, but the two colossal figures resembling two large beetles with a blue exoskeleton. They had two clawed arms and a pair of wings on their back. One of their distinguishing features was the prominent horns on their heads. The smaller one's horn extends outward in a prominent, upward curve. While the larger has pair of smaller, less curved horns positioned on either side of her head, that made it seem like a heart. These horns are more subdued and point outward rather than upward. The larger one is female then, while the smaller one is male. However, while these Pokémon looked like any Heracross, it was their sheer size that made them pause and stare in awe. The typical size for a Heracross was about 5ft. However, the male was about 6 ft and the female was about 7 ½ to 8 ft, huge breeds for their species. The reason they were that big was beyond him at this point. Professor Oak would know though, the man was a genius. Upon closer inspection though, he noticed that the larger one harbored a wild anger, a resentment that was spawned, harbored, and grown over generations. There's a saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and in the case of the Female that was certainly true. She held nothing back, as if she wanted the world to know of her anger, pain, and misery. All of that hidden beneath the creature's eyes. It was as if the Rockets actions had proven a well-known fact in her mind. Humans are trash.
Analyzing the situation and deciding to focus on how he could save this poor Pokémon, he realized he was outclassed, and outgunned. There was no way he was going to beat them in a straight up fight. He needed backup, but if he left to get help, by the time he made it back with reinforcements the Rockets would be long gone. As if his prayers were answered he noticed out of the corner of his eye that there was a Growlithe about 50 ft away cowering in fear hiding in a bush. 'He must have somehow evaded getting captured.' Trying to be extra careful and quiet he walked towards the bush and called out to Growlithe. Raising his hands in the air to show the pup he meant no harm; he called out again but pressed his finger to his lips to signal Growlithe to be quiet. The pup nodded and quietly walked up to him and started sniffing him. "Listen here buddy, I need you to do me a favor, ok?" He needed to be quiet, otherwise they were dead. "Do you know how to get out of this forest? If you do, nod your head once."
The pup nodded.
"Good. Do you know how to reach Viridian city? It's the nearest city to this place. Again, if you do, nod your head once."
Again the pup nodded.
"Great. I need to you to go there as fast as you can and get help. Look for people that have poke balls like this one, ok? The more they have, the better. Try to get their attention in any way you can. Lead them here, again, try to be as fast you can. I don't know how long I can stall them. I'm going to free the Pokémon, but I need your help. Can you do that for me buddy?"
Once again Growlithe nodded. Though this time there was a determination that hadn't been there before. "I believe in you; you can do it." With that, Growlithe licked his hand and sped off.
'Now with that taken care of, he need to figure out a way to free those Pokémon without getting caught. Easier said than done, but what choice did he have. Although now that he really thought about it, why wasn't the female Heracross doing anything. Sure she was in a cage, but the cage didn't look all that sturdy. She should be able to smash that cage open like a knife through butter. At least, If her size was any indication of her strength. There must be another reason why.
Eventually, the answer came in the form of one the Rocket grunts electrocuting the poor male Heracross with what appeared to be some form of baton. "Hera!" the poor creature screamed in agonizing pain. Smoke started to come off the smaller Heracross's body in waves. You could tell the female Heracross wanted nothing to do more than tear those Rockets to shreds. His eyes widened in realization at the thought that these despicable, low life scum had been torturing the Heracross for who knows how long. Now it made sense why the mother, he know realized, couldn't do anything. It was because of the fear of her son dying. These monsters had been using this poor Heracross as leverage to keep the mother, for a lack of a better word cooperative. There was a huge problem though, at this rate he wouldn't last much longer. He was starting to spaz more often, and because electric shock batons deliver a high-voltage, low-current electrical discharge to incapacitate a target, the high voltage can cause intense localized heating when it passes through the target's skin. And because Heracross are vulnerable to heat, or any heat-based thing then that meant he was in even more pain then he should be, let alone what he could take.
"We have to stop them, Swinub," Ash said firmly, his voice tinged with urgency. "Swii." His starter nodded with fierce determination in his eyes. He could tell his starter was beyond furious but was trying to stay calm so as to avoid giving up their location. Right now, the only advantage they had was the element of surprise. If only they could somehow free the small Heracross from the Rocket's clutches. Only then, the mother would be free to cause havoc to the Rockets. He imagined she would be strong enough to singlehandedly destroy every single one of them. Of course, they ran the risk of getting caught in the crossfire since Mother Pokémon tended to lose all forms of reason in regard to keeping some of their own safe, let alone their own offspring. However, that was a risk they would have to take. He just hoped reinforcements would make it on time.
"Okay buddy listen here; we need to free the small Heracross first; but to do that we're going to need to either steal the shock baton from the rocket or temporarily disable him. Since it will be really hard to steal the baton without alerting the other Rockets that option is a bust. However, if we direct his attention elsewhere and force him to leave his post to go search for us in the forest, then we can ambush and deal with him with the others none the wiser. I'll be on one side of the Forest while you'll be on the other making noise. Just tackle the tree and that should be enough to rattle it. Once we get his attention, I need you to run to me as quietly as possible Snowstorm. Once he's at a good distance away from the others I'll knock him out. We have to be smart, and careful, because one wrong move and this whole plan will come tumbling down. We can't afford that Snowstorm. This Pokémon's lives are in our hands, and I'll be damned if I let them down."
"Initiating plan "Rescue the Heracross and the whole forest." His starter even raised an eyebrow at that, wondering if his trainer had gone mad. "Hey, don't look at me like that, I didn't say I was good at coming up with titles to my plans." Anyway, the tiny Swinub sprung into action. He rammed into one of the trees shaking it. It did it's intended purpose and caught the attention of the Rocket grunt.
"Who's there." the rocket asked while narrowing its eyes. You could tell he was scanning the area where the noise came from. "Hey Terrance, I heard something coming from that direction, I am going to go check it out. I'll be back in a jiffy. Leaving its post and walking away we waited until he was far away enough. Once we saw our opportunity, we moved. All you could hear was a small "thunk" in the distance. Fortunately, the rocket squad did not even hear a thing. "So far so good Snowstorm. Now, we just have to figure out a way to free the Heracross, avoid getting caught and convince the mom we are not a threat. Why did his life always have to be complicated?"
As the duo stalked their way towards the cage where the male Heracross was located, they noticed the mom following their every move. 'How on earth did she find them. Not even the stupid Rocket Executive had caught on to them. Did she have some form of power where she could sense them? He didn't think so, he could believe it if she was a Psychic type, but that clearly wasn't the case. No point in dwelling on it, now he just had to convince her he was not a threat. Raising his hand in a giving up matter and using hand gestures to try to relay the message that he was trying to help. Eventually, he saw a very brief, stiff nod come from the mother. I could tell she didn't trust me, or at the very least didn't want to, but realized that the best chance for her son to survive was me. It was begrudging acceptance, rather than genuine gratefulness. Getting the green light from mama Heracross he could truly focus on rescuing her son.
Unfortunately, the cage was too close to where the rest of the grunts were located so there was no way to sneak undetected. "Snowstorm I need you to listen carefully, I found a way to free the Heracross. We will do what we did with the other guy. Ill be over there across the clearing where the other Pokémon are locked in cages. Ill convince them to make as much of a ruckus to draw the attention of the rest of the grunts. While that is going on, I need you to make your way towards the cage and break the locks. Fortunately, your small enough to fit through the spaces between each metal bar. Use powder snow as much as you can, hopefully it won't take long for the lock to turn brittle. If that doesn't work, then try to make mud slap harder and launch them as compactly as possible. You can use powder snow to hardened the mud like you did in the battle with Squirtle. I know you haven't practiced that as much as we need, plus melding two moves is extremely difficult, but desperate times call for desperate measures buddy. Just remember, I believe in you."
As I sneaked past a group of grunts, on my way to the cage where the Mankeys and the Pinsir were located, I noticed the other Pokémon were paralyzed with fear. Several oddish huddled together crying and shaking. A couple of Pidgey with a haunted glazed look in their eyes. Life seemingly gone. The more I saw, the more my anger rose. The more my anger rose the more I hated it. I could not stand for the injustice of it all. How could people be so cruel? And for what? Money? Power? Sport? How could people be capable of such horrendous acts? He could not even begin to fathom. However, if there was one thing he was sure of, it was that he would relish the day Team Rocket fell. Whether by his hands, or someone else's.
Eventually, I reached the Mankey, and Pinsir cage. They noticed me sneaking up to their cage, and their eyes widened in realization. "I need you all to be quiet for right now. I'm trying to help you get out of here. You all have to do me a favor though if you are willing?" They all instantly nodded. "Good, this is what I need you guys to do." After relaying the plan I started to walk back to my previous position before I suddenly heard someone behind say, "I got you now you stupid twerp." Suddenly everything went black.
"Ugh, what happened, and why do I have this stabbing pain in the back of my neck and back." All he heard was laughter. "Well, that would be my doing you stupid twerp. Payback for when you did the same thing." "Payback? What are you talk…...oh." "Hahahahaha, I was beginning to get a little hurt, I thought we had something special. Yeah, you bitch, I was the guy who you clogged over the head, it hurt like hell too. Figure since I am affair guy, I would do the same to you. An eye for an eye you know.
"Steven, stop playing around with your food. The boss said to kill him quickly."
"Shut up Terrance! Don't make me go over there and beat the crap out of you. This is my sweet revenge, and I am going to savor every moment of it. Besides, the boss is not here right now. How long is he going to take anyway? He's been gone for a hell of a long time."
"I'm not sure, he said some complications arose, but that he'll be here soon. Anyway, try to be quick, you know Proton hates when we disobey him."
"Yeah, yeah. Well, you heard him friend, we don't have much time together, so I think I'll just stick with sticking you with this electric shock baton. Hahahaha aren't I funny, or what? I should do stand-up" All he heard was groans from the other grunts. "Shut it you uncultured morons, y'all just can't appreciate good comedy."
As he gathered his bearings and looked around to see if he could find Snowstorm, hoping he hadn't got caught. His heart sank in seeing his beloved starter 20 ft away tied to a tree. A Golbat, and a Koffing circling around him. All he could do now was hope and pray that reinforcements arrived soon, otherwise, he was toast. He could stall some more, Steven seemed to like to talk a lot. "Why do you do this." As Steven turned to him, he could tell he had this maniacal look in his eye.
"Why do you want to know?
"I'm just trying to understand."
"Hahahaha, you are a funny kid. Understand? What, do you have hero complex or what? Are you going to try to turn me over to the good side and say that that this is not worth it. Honestly, you might as well stop now since there is nothing that will make me change. That doesn't answer your question however, and since you made me laugh, I'll answer it. It's the thrill. Sure power and money are nice, but for me is the thrill. The thrill of the hunt, you get what I'm saying. I'll admit, I've always had a sadistic, mean streak. Ever since I was little, I've always like getting in to trouble. Just the feeling of doing terrible things and getting away with it just adds a certain spice to my life. It's intoxicating really. And when I joined Team Rocket, I was finally given the freedom to do whatever the hell I wanted and get paid doing it. It does not get better than that brat. Honestly, I respect you for having the balls to do what you did. It was beyond stupid of course, but its thrilling isn't. To feel that everything could come tumbling down if a single mistake is made. That you could lose your life if you're not careful, but still doing it anyways. You and I are not that much different you know. If you were in Team Rocket, we could become best friends.
"I am NOTHING like you!" he snarled. How dare he say that? There was an ocean of difference between them. "I don't go around stealing and breaking the law and seeing this as some form of sick game. I DO NOT torture poor, innocent Pokémon just for the thrill of the hunt. What kind of sick person are you? There's a world of difference between you and I."
"Wow didn't think you had in you. Looks like you have claws. At the end of the day you can deny it all you want, but deep down you know I am right. Anyway, we're getting distracted here. Since I know my boss will be here shortly, I think I'll have some fun with you and your little buddy here. I can't really shock him, seeing as he's a Ground type, but that's ok, I can be pretty creative when I want to be." As he began kicking him, punching him, and ordering the Golbat and Koffing to attack Snowstorm, I could tell he was trying to stay strong. Eventually, he gave out. He couldn't take it anymore and cried. Swii! Swii! Nubbbb! The more he hit, the sharper and broken the cry became. I could see you tears forming in my starters eyes. His tiny body was trembling, and all he could do was watch. Snowstorm looked up and our eyes met. Even from this distance I could tell he was pleading for help, at the same time had resigned himself to his fate. His cries were no longer audible, just painful grunts. I couldn't take it anymore.
"STOOOOOOOOP! Please just stop. Do anything to me, just leave him alone." His voice was raw and broken and he tried crawling his way over to his starter. He needed to be next to him. Unfortunately, he was tied up. He didn't care, he would slither his way over there, and slither he did."
"Hahahaha, you crack me up kid. You really do have a Hero complex don't you. I meeeean, YOU were the one to knock me out, so I suppose I could fulfill your last request. Unfortunately for you, you're not a ground type."
As he looked around, he could see every Pokémon's fear, panic, and disbelief. He couldn't help but feel like a failure. He failed them. He promised that he would help them, but in the end, he couldn't keep that promise. He had been a fool. If only he had tied up freaking steven then maybe this wouldn't be happening. He had been a fool to think that just knocking him out would've been enough. He had left the shock baton next to him for fucks sake. And because of that huge oversight, his starter was at death's door. All these innocent Pokémon were going to be taken away, and who knows for what purpose. Nothing painless, or good certainly. Quite the contrary, they were going to be the recipients of unspeakable horrors. All because he had been a fool. He felt shame, he couldn't even look at these Pokémon in the eyes anymore. As his head hung low, he realized that if he was going to die, then the least he could do was look at the ones he had promised to save and apologize. It was the honorable thing to do. As he once again met everyone's eyes he muttered, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. As his eyes met the mother Heracross I noticed there was evident shock, disbelief, fear, and uncertainty. "Sorry, I tried my best." As his eyes darted to where male Heracross was, his eyes softened, he could tell he was feeling better. Smoke wasn't coming off of him anymore, the electric sparks weren't even visible anymore, and his eyes look more alive. At least he had done something right.
"You know, you are an interesting kid. I can honestly say I have never met anybody else quite like you. But I wonder, will you show the same devotion to the other Pokémon as you did with your starter. I mean I would understand if you don't, I wouldn't give a rat's ass about them either. However, I do wonder how far you will go for Pokémon you've never met, and most likely never see again. I think I'll start with the male Heracross. You seem to have a soft spot for it." As he made his way towards him, he could tell the mom's eyes widened in alarm, and worry. She wanted nothing more than go save her son, but once again she couldn't. The fear, and panic was very evident in the male Heracross, but once again, he could watch helplessly as Steven shocked him again, and again. "Heraaa! Cross! Cruuu! The cries became more like sobs, and he stared in horror on as once again the poor Heracross was enveloped in steam. His carapace seemed to start to ignite. The mother lost in raw panic tries to fly towards her son but the other Rockets remind her that if she moves they'll order their Pokémon to launch fire attacks at the already vulnerable Heracross. With no one able to save him the Heracross just takes it, already resigned to his fate.
"STOOOOOP! Can't you see his on the verge of death. Leave him alone. I'll take whatever punishment you can think of, just leave the Heracross alone. Please I beg you."
"Beg, Jaja you're begging me! You hear that fellas, he's begging. Every just laughed and laughed. You are such a martyr. All right, if you wish. Don't blame me for this though, you asked for it. I feel generous today, so I'll start off nice and easy.
As steven swings the baton on Ash's back his face contorts with a mix of shock and agony. His body jerks violently as if being pulled by invisible strings. His hair stands on end, and his eyes widen in a horrified, pained expression. The electricity crackles around him, sending bright, pulsating lights dancing across his features. His entire body seems to tense, his muscles rigid and unyielding. "AHHHHHHHHHH! He cried out. He was in unimaginable pain, he felt his body slumping forward, but before his world turned black he looked up to see the young Heracross alive, and with a smile on his face, he gave in to the darkness.
Swinub's large, round eyes widen with terror. His pupils dilate, and the normally warm and inquisitive expression has been replaced with one of raw fear. His eyes are fixed on Ash, unable to look away from the horrifying sight. Its small, stocky body is stiff, and it trembles slightly. The once playful Pokémon is now immobilized by the sheer horror of seeing its trainer in such pain. Tears: Small droplets of moisture form in the corners of Swinub's eyes, threatening to spill over. His emotions are palpable, its distress evident in the way its eyes glisten with unshed tears. SWINUUUUUB!
Every Pokémon could only watch in horror as their Savior wreathe in electricity trembled in unimaginable pain. Several of the younger Pokémon were already openly crying, while the older ones were holding back tears. Even the most temperamental like Pinsir and Mankey were touched by the trainer's loyalty, and devotion towards them. They could not understand why this human was willing to go to such lengths to save them even at the cost of his life. It didn't make sense. However, if he was willing to go this far, then they would too. With a loud cry they began to attack the cage. Several Brick Breaks smashed the cage open and the wild Pinsir, Mankey, and Breelom rushed out to break open the other cages. The others followed suit, using various attacks like Bullet Seeds, Gusts, Tackles, and in the case of the Larvesta Embers.
"Oh shit, everybody release all your Pokémon and try hold them back. We need to knock them out if we want to make it out alive." As the Rockets released all sixty-five of their Pokémon ready to attack, a bloodcurdling roar shocked everyone to their core. The Mother Heracross was furious, and she was not in the mood for leniency. Before anybody could do anything, she moved towards the sole person who for the last two hundred years she actually cared for. The only person who not only shattered her belief system but taught her compassion, and selflessness. As she cradled the smoking form of her savior with a soft, tender touch which should have been impossible for one so huge and strong, no one moved a muscle. Too afraid of being on the receiving end of Viridian Forest Guardian's wrath.
"What are you morons waiting for, there's one of her and 65 of us. Attack her, and don't hold anything back." However, the battle was lost before it even began. Before they had a chance to even realize what was happening, they saw twenty of their Pokémon achieve flight and smashed into the surrounding trees knocked out cold. Shock and horror was written in all of the Rockets faces. They couldn't even begin to fathom what had just occurred. "Retreat, I repeat, retreat! She is way out of our league." Before the rest of the Rockets had a chance to do anything, another twenty of their Pokémon including their trainers once again smashed against the tree trunks, out cold. "Kadabra get me out of here, Teleport." Before he disappeared, Steven called out, "Mark my words kid, the next time we meet I will not be as lenient. You will regret the day you were born."
With Steven gone, their Boss nowhere to be found, and 40 of their Pokémon out cold the other Rocket members wisely surrendered. As they huddled together awaiting their fate, all of a sudden, the rest of the wild Pokémon swarmed Ash and Swinub. Worry clearly visible on their faces. As the Mother Heracross called out a series of cries, a lot of the Pokémon got to work. Various Pokémon were making makeshift nests with the leaves of the trees. Others brought berries of different shapes and sizes. While the Larvesta made a small campfire. Together, all of the hidden forest dwellers worked to make their savior well. As they all huddled closer together in a protective circle, they saw in the distance torches, flashlights and people talking. They immediately tensed, getting ready to rain fire and brimstone on those stupid fools who would dare interrupt their vigil. As the crowd of voices grew louder and louder, they saw Growlithe step out on the clearing. Surprise, and confusion evident on their faces, Growlithe started barking.
"Hey guys I'm back, sorry it took so long but the humans were far away. It's ok, they are here to help. By the way, where is the other human?"
As the group of Pokémon relaxed a little, they moved out of the wayto let Growlithe take a look at Ash. The puppy Pokémon eye's widening alarm at seeing the state in which the boy was in.
"What happened to him?"
"It's a long story young one. We'll tell you later. Right now the most important thing is to get this child well" The Ancient Heracross spoke.
As the other trainers, followed by the Police force of Viridian city emerged from the forest into the clearing, they noticed the shock on every single one of their faces. They weren't moving a muscle. It wasn't until they saw the condition of the child and the Swinub, that was in the Mother Heracross arms, that they sprang into action.
"We need to get this trainer to Pokémon center now, time is of the essence. Does anybody have a Psychic type Pokémon that can Teleport, or a Flying type to get this kid there faster." Officer Jenny called out.
"I have a Kadabra ma'am." One of the trainers called out.
"Ok great, take him and wait for me there. Let Nurse Joy that I'm on my way as well."
"Roger that." With that, the trainer disappeared.
With that done, the Police rounded up all of the criminals and put them inside the cars. As they were about to leave the Giant Heracross approached them. The Officers instantly tensed having never seen a Pokémon that huge. One of the seasoned trainers released her Alakazam to interpret what the Heracross wanted to say to them.
"Greetings humans. I am the Guardian of this Forest and have been for the last 150 years. I would like to pass a long a warning. Don't ever come to this Haven again, otherwise face the consequences. Normally, I would just kill you on the spot and be done with it. However, luckily for you, the human that was just here, our savior, taught me compassion and in honor of his deeds, just this once I spare your pitiful lives. Again, pass this message to everyone you don't want dying a very painful death. More importantly, make sure he is made well, because if I find out that he didn't, I will wipe Viridian city off the map. And lastly, when he wakes up and is ready to start traveling again, tell him that I would like a private word with him. He can ask any forest dweller, and they will happily guide him to me. All right, that's it. Now begone from my sight!
With that, the rest of the trainers and officers fled for their life not wanting to test the creature's patience.
2 days later in the Pokémon center
"Yaaaaaawn, man I am so tired."
"Swiiii!" Swinub happily jumped to his trainers side.
"Woah, settle down buddy, I'm happy to see you too. But where are we…. Oh wait now I remember. We must be in the Pokémon center then. Hopefully, yesterday's events was a once in a lifetime event and not an indicator if what's to come. Thinking about it, it was yesterday that the whole ordeal happened right?" His starter shrugged not really knowing. "oh great, hopefully he wasn't knocked out too long."
Before he could continue talking the door swung open. "Ashyyy! Thank Mew you're awake. Oh, how is my sweet baby boy doing? Are you ok? Does anything hurt?" Deliah Ketchum frantically asked.
"Mom slow down, relax I'm ok. Nothing really hurts besides the burns in my arms and back. Even then, it's very minor."
"I'm so glad. You have no idea how scared I was. Also, what on earth were you thinking attacking Team Rocket? Did you learn nothing all these years? What happened to surviving, and staying alive, huh? You attacking Team Rocket is the opposite of that. What no answer, I deserve an explanation mister." Before his mother could continue her interrogation, a knock on the door interrupted her.
"Yes, who is it?" Mothern Ketchum asked confusion laced on her voice.
"It's the Viridian City Police Chief, may I come in?"
Wanting to avoid getting chewed out by his mother the young boy almost immediately replied "yes come in."
The door swung open, and a very pretty lady with a blue uniform walked in. Hello Mrs. Ketchum, and you as well, Ash. I was informed that you had awoken, and I wanted to ask you a few questions regarding the event from two days ago. Before we begin though, I would like to introduce you to a special person that will also be joining us."
"That's enough Chief, I can introduce myself. Hello Mr. Ketchum, I'm Giovanni the Viridian City Gym leader, and it's a pleasure to meet you.
