Chapter 1: A Storm is Coming
{{Lumos! (Hedwig's Theme) by John Williams}}
It was a dark night in Konohagakure no Sato, as storm clouds hovered over the village, blocking out the moon.
Lightning flashed in the clouds followed by booming thunder. It was raining heavily over the village, filling the streets with an inch and a half of water. All the lights in the village were shut down at this time, due to one of the power plants having been damaged during the massive battle that occurred nearly a month ago. With all the lights in the village shut down to conserve power, Konoha was immersed in perpetual darkness, at least for a few hours.
Not even the smallest source of light could be seen, except for one small window that stood out like a sore thumb.
On the tallest floor of an old apartment building, a small bluish-white light dimmed into existence, fueled at the end of a wand.
Within the confines of the dreary apartment, a blonde preteen boy named Naruto Uzumaki was wide-awake.
Naruto was an unusual person for several reasons: the first reason was that he contained a destructive and dangerous demon inside him called the Kyuubi no Kitsune, also known as the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. The second reason was he had a considerable habit of doing things in his former residence in the dead of night, even though he lived with his guardian big brother at different apartment. And the third reason was that he happened to be a wizard, the only known wizard in existence.
When he was born, another wizard from another world named Harry Potter had died. He was stuck in limbo until he set free and was subsequently sealed into Naruto by accident. This incident caused Naruto to become imbued with his own magical powers. The two of them finally met each other nearly seven years ago. Since then, they learned how to survive in the shinobi world together, becoming such close friends they were practically siblings.
In the time since the two wizards swore their magic to secrecy, they only let a selective few into their circle of trust. Those chosen few included the boy's guardian Iruka Umino, who took him in many months ago. He helped him escape his miserable former residence, which was used more like a laboratory for his magical experiments, brewing potions, and growing magical plants. Then there was the late Hayate Gekko, a close friend of Naruto who also taught him how to use a sword. But he'd been murdered some time before Konoha was invaded the previous month.
The loss was devastating to Naruto, but he'd begun to heal steadily. He knew his friend wouldn't want him to shut himself into sadness. Naruto could still laugh, smile, and have fun like he did before. But that didn't mean he didn't think about his former master occasionally and missed him dearly. Sometimes, he would visit the Hero's Memorial and read his fallen friend's name, offer flowers or even chocolates on the memorial.
Right now, it was almost midnight and Naruto was currently working on several things at once. He took his lit wand and formed a special handsign that had become signature to him.
He whispered, "Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!"
There were bursts of white smoke as clones of Naruto emerged. They faced the original who flexed his right arm after he'd broken it the previous month. Thanks to the demon fox he healed up much quicker than most people and was relieved he could use ninjutsu and magic like before. The clones all wore the same blue pajamas as the original who began instructing them while lighting the place with his wand.
"Let's start the evening off with brewing more Wiggenweld Potion, since we're all out. Use the cauldron on the stove and don't forget to blind the windows before getting started. No need to be concerned about the dittany we collected, since it was watered down last night… Also, check on the Exploding Potion as well? I've had it sit in its cauldron for about seventeen hours, so it should be ready."
The clone nodded, took its wand and muttered, "Lumos!"
The shadow clone walked into the kitchen with their wand, flicking it to close the blinds. They approached the shove and cabinets after summoning a standard pewter cauldron and placed a white mask over their nose and mouth. The clone opened the cabinets, and bright neon lights filled the entire room. Inside were several pewter cauldrons currently in use. One of them was filled with a glowing, blue liquid, another was filled with a slowly bubbling mud-like substance. They were being heating by their own fires, which were bright blue in color and somehow unable to burn down the kitchen, apartment, or the entire building.
There were other, smaller cauldrons lining the inside with their own bluebell flames heating them. Within each cauldron was a different concoction Naruto created thanks to his secret visits into the Forest of Death for potion ingredients. Naruto would have liked to ask his big brother's girlfriend Anko for help to go in with permission, as it was out-of-bounds. But she already did him a solid helping him obtain shredded boomslang skin and didn't want her getting suspicious. She didn't know he was a wizard and both he and Iruka wanted to keep it that way for a while.
Within the smaller cauldrons were new brews he could make with the ingredients he found in the forest. One of them contained an emerald liquid, releasing unusual fumes, which was why the Naruto clone had to wear a mask. The shadow clone checked this cauldron first, examining the contents without breathing.
'Harry, I think our Garroting Gas is just about finished.'
The older wizard studied the mixture from the mindscape where he resided within Naruto, smiling and nodded, 'I think it's done too. You should have it stored immediately. But to be on the safe side, let it stew for the rest of the night. Tomorrow, we can have it stored in some of those smaller phials.'
'I'm still surprised we were able to get such small phials made from crystal. But they are the best apothecary for a reason, and they were on sale. I'm happy for that foreign couple because they're making bank right now with all the supplies the hospital needs right now. Wait… in your time, did Banksy have anything to do with banks?'
'No, he was an anonymous freehand graffiti artist from… Bristol, I think. My memory's a bit fuzzy, but I think he really kicked off around the time I was attending Hogwarts. But I had bigger Grindylows to fry at the time, to be honest.'
'Oh, I thought I had a pretty good joke going, never mind. Anyway, Garroting Gas, I'll have it stored tomorrow, Nii-san.'
The shadow clone turned to the other hovering cauldron. Inside, the cauldron seemed to be bigger on the inside containing a bubbling lavender-colored potion. Within the mixture floated strange black crystalized rocks the size of walnuts. Naruto put on some gloves and used some tweezers to extract one of the rocks to examine it. The rock seemed to audibly crinkle as it dried, crystalizing further until it was safe to hold. The bright colors of the other potions reflected off its surface as the clone struggled to look at it directly.
'You did it, Naruto! I didn't think it could be done, but there it is!'
The shadow clone crawled from the cabinet and rested the rock on the table where he used to eat. It continued to crinkle even after it dried as if it were eager to break apart but didn't. The clone picked it up and beamed as the rock was cold to the touch.
"Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder!"
Naruto had come up with the idea while brainstorming last week with Iruka. He wondered what magical objects he could use that could be mistaken for ninja tools or weapons. Hence the reason he was replicating them in his old apartment tonight, not wanting to damage his true home.
The young boy always wanted more of a taste of the wizarding world. So, he thought to create his own version of several magical items that could be easily mistaken for everyday tools, like a true ninja. He pressed for this idea in the event he needed a quick and convenient magical solution while on a mission without risking revealing his secret powers.
Thankfully, Harry's wealth of knowledge courtesy of his late library escapades in his fourth year came in handy once again. They used instructions from an old potions book to make a very unique potion. It compressed the contents of a standard smoke bomb while enhancing it until it crystalized. Thus, creating his own version of Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder.
The shadow clone removed all the new smoke bombs, setting them on the table to fully crystallize. But the clone had to be careful, lest it fill the entire apartment building with inescapable darkness for potentially days. Naruto had taken constructing the smoke bombs a step further by adding sand to them. He reluctantly gathered some leftover sand from his fight against a genin named Gaara sometime ago. He did so in order to make his smoke bombs more like the original devices ancient shinobi once used. Which would help make the smoke thicker and slow down potential enemies while temporarily blinding them.
Once it was done with the smoke bombs, the shadow clone vanished the contents and moved on to the biggest cauldron.
Naruto had been brewing this potion carefully for nearly a month. The contents were a thick, dark mud-like substance that slowly bubbled. The clone stirred it several times and checked their own field guide for the instructions. From within the mindscape, Harry smiled at the bubbling brew with a feeling of nostalgia and nausea.
'Your Polyjuice Potion is coming along better than I thought it would, Naruto. I'm impressed you've managed to get this far with what ingredients you had.'
The blonde-haired shadow clone chuckled and smiled. He did so each time he heard his older brother admire him for his successful efforts.
'All thanks to the Forest of Death and Anko. I figured there was fluxweed and lacewing flies in there ever since we saw that dying Bicorn, and I was right,' he thought, 'Anko providing that boomslang skin helped immensely too, she probably thinks I'm just fascinated by shedded snakes skin or something. Once we got the boomslang, I knew it'd be a good idea to brew some Polyjuice. Such a shame my shadow clones couldn't find any unicorns in there. But there's still a lot of the forest left to explore; I barely scratched the surface.'
'I'm really impressed you managed to pull off such a complicated potion on your own! Hermione would be proud, and Slughorn would have had a field day if he saw you brew this! You really are a gifted potioneer,' said Harry.
The shadow clone's cheeks turned pink as it smiled before turning their attention back to the potion.
'It still needs a bit of time before it's ready,' he thought to himself, 'But I'll get there soon!'
The clone looked over at the last cauldron with a lot more caution. The mixture radiated neon blue, which filled the entire kitchen. The fumes swirled unusually, whipping in various directions, which meant it was done brewing, but it was the most dangerous substance in the apartment.
The shadow clone stirred the mixture and watched as it continued to fill the cabinet with light.
'Exploding Potion… beautiful, but dangerously unstable.'
'Be extremely careful with it, Naruto. I used to handle these while I was on the run, and they can backfire on you easily. You'll need to put it in the smaller phials to contain the potion safely. The spell you placed on them should keep them from exploding unless the phials are smashed. Best we hold off on that until tomorrow, understood?'
'Yes… I understand.'
While the clone was careful to watch the heat on the cauldron, a bell chimed in the kitchen. The shadow clone jumped, hitting their head against the top of his cabinet. The shadow clone was too worried over the potions to be outraged when the real Naruto bolted from the bedroom. He hastily went for the oven switching it off, grabbing some mitts, pulled out a tray of sizable cupcakes shaped like cauldrons.
Naruto rested the tray on the cold stove, watching the cakes cooling down and solidifying. The blonde genin beamed as the cakes sank enough to fill with a tooth-aching amount of frosting once he brought them back home.
'I did it! I got the recipe down for the perfect Cauldron Cakes! Eat your heart out, Honeydukes!'
Harry couldn't deny the looked like the same treats he used to enjoy from the food trolley on the Hogwarts Express. They probably weren't better than Honeydukes' as no one could craft magical confections like they could. But the cakes still made Harry salivate, thinking of the many confectionaries he used to enjoy in his past life. It made him yearn to have his own body again someday. Unless Naruto was willing to let him possess him for a meal or two, though that seemed unlikely given how wrong it seemed just for a bite of chocolate or to see what all the ramen hype was about.
'Excellent! Serve it with some afternoon tea, and your appetite is ruined! But given your capacity for food, you'll probably devour three bowls of Ichiraku ramen anyway.'
'Most likely, but don't count yourself out, Nii-san,' he thought, 'I promise one day I'll figure out a way to get you your own body and you can enjoy a fresh batch as well as some ramen. You won't regret it. Such a shame the house elves at Hogwarts never thought to make some in your day. You would have been hooked… but then again, I'm still a bit disturbed all the food was cooked by house elves, but they never got paid.'
'Now I know Hermione would have loved you,' he teased, causing Naruto to blush, 'I'm guessing you would have jumped on board her spew campaign?'
'The Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare,' he angrily corrected, 'It's not that hard to remember!'
'It's still a mouthful. No food pun intended.'
Once he'd preserved and stored the cakes, Naruto returned to his former bedroom, which served more as an office or a Herbology greenhouse growing knotgrass, fluxweed, Horklumps, leaping toadstools, Puffapods, a Wiggentree sapling, moly, dittany, monkshood which was set beside a pot of ginger, some questionable cabbages, and mint. His former bedroom had become quite green since the Chunin Exams and would only get greener over time.
When the clones got to work, Naruto began working on his old, beaded rucksack. It looked about the same, but the boy had altered it significantly; upon opening it he lit up his wand and it looked significantly bigger on the inside than it normally would. Naruto began muttering under his breath as he continued weaving magic into the rucksack's interior with an Undetectable Extension Charm.
He stuck his arm deep into the bag, nearly falling into it as he began constructing a more solid surface for him to work with.
He'd read an interesting fact about one of the wizards he admired, Newt Scamander. Naruto learned he'd traveled the world while living inside his suitcase back when he wrote the first edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He thought he'd follow his example and make his own alterations to his rucksack. He did so to help him carry around potential magical plants or even magical creatures if he stumbled upon them or they needed saving.
He knew he needed it, otherwise his shadow clones he'd sent to the Forest of Death would have brought more plants.
Naruto managed to establish a solid wooden floor with levels and a ladder, as well as plenty of storage space for plants such as Venomous Tentacula or Alihotsy trees, as well as phoenixes, or something as large as a Nundu or Chimaera.
The young wizard stopped as the strain of such a complicated spell was draining him. He would work on it more later, to create a more inviting environment for plants, animals, and humans alike.
Naruto placed his rucksack on the floor and opened it as wide as he could. Carefully making his way inside, he felt it widen around him to accommodate him as he slipped inside. He then slid down the ladder until his slippered feet touched the wooden floor and he admired his work.
"This'll be useful on a mission," he said aloud, "I might not even need a tent once I spruce this place up!"
'As long as you don't fall asleep with some Devil's Snare in here or a Lethifold floating around… or Red Caps, or Hinkypunks, or a Hidebehind, or-'
"-Okay, you made your point! We'll get a tent!" he shouted out loud.
Harry couldn't help smirking a bit, as Naruto climbed up the ladder to get out of his now enchanted rucksack.
'Still, this will be a good place to store some of your more dangerous potions as the charm will keep them in place. You could make a slight alteration to make it easier to reach back and grab an Exploding Potion or some Garroting Gas like how you use your weapons pouch.'
'Great idea! We're getting so much done tonight!'
'With that said, Naruto, what other activities do we have planned for tomorrow night?'
'I think we should make an invisibility cloak next! You think you could help me out with that? We made that old stealth suit when I was little, remember? I know I can use a Disillusionment Charm, but making a cloak there's a chance it could be mistaken for the shinobi version of one, no?'
'You bring up a good point, Naruto, even though I'm certain there's got to be a jutsu that can achieve a similar effect as a Disillusionment Charm. But it would be harder to convince people you learned such a jutsu depending on how advanced it could be and who in the village could have taught it to you. I suppose making a cloak would be somewhat less incriminating,' he replied, 'But it wouldn't be easy creating a good enough cloak that can fully conceal you if it wasn't made by Ignotus Peverell. Remember that stealth suit you mentioned? Completely destroyed. Not to mention, even if we did succeed in making an invisibility cloak it could be disastrous if it fell into enemy hands.'
'But I was six years old when I stitched that suit together,' Naruto countered, desperately wanting his own invisibility cloak, 'If I used a stronger material, it wouldn't fall apart as easily. And for the record, I would never let that cloak out of my sight. Unlike someone I know.'
'Oi! I was eleven when I left mine on the Astronomy Tower! Plus, I was a lot more concerned about Ron when Sirius dragged him into the Whomping Willow and broke his leg,' he countered back before pouting slightly, 'Cut me some slack, Naruto, I was still a kid.'
'And I'm twelve and I've been through some stuff too seeing as I'm half-shinobi. Plus, I've seen your memories, and I can learn from them to avoid making similar mistakes here and there. Just gimme a chance to make an invisibility cloak and you get to reserve all bragging rights, rubbing it in my face in the event someone pinches it off me.'
Harry pondered over the idea of telling Naruto 'I told you so' but he also saw his logic and shrugged, 'Very well. But no complaining when I exercise my bragging rights, deal?'
'Deal,' he agreed reluctantly, 'Is there anything in your library that could help us make it?'
'Probably, it might take some time and we'll need one hell of a sturdy cloak if we want it to work and last.'
'I know where we can find one! But it's gonna be weird seeing Tenten again after she ratted us out to Neji.'
'Just keep everything close to your chest for now. We won't need any alterations apart from what we have planned, plus there's no reason not to trust her without any tournament or exams to sway her loyalty. Besides, doesn't she fancy you? I can't help wondering if she does with how friendly she is to you all the time.'
'Fancy me?! No, wasn't she just snooping for information to help herself and her teammates win? Or getting me to buy something from her family's shop?'
'I don't think she did, Naruto, she could have done worse by us and robbed you blind if she wanted to. I think she might like you and you might want to watch out for that. You're getting closer to the age of getting a girlfriend soon, you'll be turning thirteen in a few weeks!'
'I know, Harry, but I'm not really interested; I don't really have a thing for Tenten. We don't know each other that well and she already sold me out to her teammate who did try to kill me. That sort of thing leaves a bad taste in the mouth, you know?'
'When you spell it out like that, I can see your point. Still, better her than the previous girl you had a crush on.'
'Oh, leave her alone. We all know who she's going to end up with.'
'Rock Lee? Jokes aside, let's wrap things up and get back home. But don't forget to brush your teeth and don't give me that old broken arm excuse again! Your arm's fine!'
'Okay! Okay!'
The boy got flustered but did as he was told as he gathered his things. He made sure to instruct his shadow clones to lock up the potions, ingredients, and plants once they'd finished as well.
Once satisfied, Naruto Disapparated on the spot with a twisting rush, Apparating around the corner of Iruka's apartment. It was still raining but the genin paid it no mind until he got inside and locked the door. With a simple flourish of his wand, he immediately dried himself off as if he were never in the rain.
He then quietly snuck to the bathroom to clean his teeth before retreating to his bedroom, collapsing on his red and gold mattress. Exhausted, Naruto quickly fell into dreams about playing Quidditch, soaring high across a massive field as the crowds watching cheered him on, blowing kisses at him.
But then he had an odd dream about Hinata Hyuga, accompanying him on an expedition to the Forest of Death. She was guiding him, leading him through an uninhabitable place, where Hinata showed him a burrowing family of mice with gigantic ears while he wrote down in his field guide.
But in between his dreams, Naruto woke up, having sneezed. Which some people believed meant someone somewhere far away was talking about them.
Hundreds of miles north of the Land of Fire, deep underground through a series of carved tunnels, a middle-aged man with snow white skin and waist length jet-black hair held a long wooden box filled alongside a luxurious cup of tea. He was seated on a massive bed and getting prepared to go to sleep after having tried to open the box.
He handled the tea with care, drank a little and sighed. He almost smiled once he realized he had no accidents or mishaps since the previous evening. The man was careful as he reached to set his tea aside on the bedside table. But his slender hands flinched for no apparent reason and the box almost fell off the bed. He tried to catch the tea but it bounced off of his knuckles, drenching his outstretched arms, crotch, and face.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
The pale man's scream rang through the underground fortress, alerting and frightening everyone inside. His arms, face and groin sizzled and burned intensely, already forming blistering burns. He screamed and lashed out, breaking his bedside table out of sheer frustration.
"GODDAMMIT! WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING TO ME?! WHY?!"
An attendant from outside burst into the master bedroom and started hovering over his master nervously and worried out of their mind.
"Orochimaru-sama! Tell me what's the matter! What can I do?!"
The white snake coldly glared at the attendant, drool leaking from of the corners of his mouth. His arms twitched before he let out an inhuman roar that again rang throughout the underground fortress.
"YOU CAN DIE!"
Whatever Orochimaru did to his attendant, the man's blood splattered all over the bed, staining the floors and the surrounding tapestries. The attendant fell to the floor, dead as a doornail while their master trembled in his seat on the bed, exhausted as if he had run around the world and back. Orochimaru's burnt arms twitched as he heard a set of footsteps and a man walked into the bedroom frowning.
"You killed another one," he sighed, "If this continues, we'll run out of followers by winter's end."
Orochimaru turned to a young man in his late teens. He had long white hair, glasses, and a long, thin scar on his left cheek running from his cheek to his chin. He wore a sleeveless black shirt, and his hair was undone from its normal ponytail as he was about to go to bed. The teen removed his glasses as he walked into the bedroom, stepping over the dead attendant.
"You still have trouble even with the most insignificant tasks?" he asked, "You haven't been the same ever since that fight in the Forest of Death. Your jutsu fail almost all the time now and the easiest of things somehow end in disaster, like a child whose found his father's sword," he sighed arrogantly, "We need to find a solution soon, before I have to find a town that sells adult-sized diapers."
Orochimaru slammed his fist into the back of his bed, causing a number of valuable items on the walls to fall to the floor and break, including the central amber stone on the hilt of a dagger.
"Kabuto," the older man coldly hissed, "Patronize me like that ever again, and I will kill you without thinking twice about it… Understood?!"
The young man nodded and sat down beside his master, albeit uncomfortably but obedient. Orochimaru calmed down as the young man was his doctor as he began examining his latest wounds. Kabuto's hands radiated with chakra as he pressed them against the burns, healing them.
He stroked his master's skin trying to sooth him with his touch as if he were his lover. He unsettlingly breathed in Orochimaru's scent while the older man seemed completely uninterested. He insisted his best lieutenant quit dawdling and heal his wounds already, looked uninterested while he looked repulsed. Kabuto seemed somewhat hurt by his coldness but hid it behind an emotionless mask.
Orochimaru stared down at his arms, reflecting on the fight in the Forest of Death his lieutenant mentioned.
Ever since he met that blonde genin, struck with his 'curse', the Sannin felt like the gods went out of their way to punish him. It was like Kabuto had said, all his endeavors no matter how small or insignificant always seemed to fail or end with escalating misfortune on his end.
There were times where it felt like the whole world turned against him. No matter what he did or how hard he tried to be careful or cautious he never came out unscathed.
Orochimaru winced as he thought back to when all his misfortunes started. He could see the face of the child responsible for his condition, tormenting him, causing him to lash out at his followers and servants.
Kabuto leaned in close to his master and asked, "Orochimaru-sama… Is there something I can do?"
The Sannin remained silent as he devised a horrible and elaborate plan as he stared into the darkness.
"Anything at all?" the young man asked again.
Orochimaru finally answered him once he'd come up with a plan that was sure to work without his direct action.
"I want Naruto Uzumaki."
Kabuto raised his brow before he frowned and his eye twitched slightly in resentment. But then he smirked, licking the corners of his mouth as more ideas sprang to mind about the boy.
Orochimaru turned to him looking determined as he ordered, "He's the one who did this to me… You will bring him to me at once and force him to reverse whatever he's done. Chase him out of Konoha and send soldiers after him… Have them scan across the entire Land of Fire if it must be done… I will not be able to rest until I am rid of this curse!"
The young man soon left, stepping over the corpse heartlessly as he raised his hand to let his master know he heard and understood.
He then said, "I will reach to our contact in Konoha immediately, Orochimaru-sama."
