I've decided to rewrite this fic again, this time I've changed the characters to represent people that are my friends now then who were back when I first wrote the fanfic. The main character Kevin is still in the fic as it is a character based off of myself. I will attempt to be more descriptive as that was the biggest critique the first go around, the other was conflict, but I always intended conflict later in the fic. Hopefully you enjoy the renewed Pokémon EX. I will be rotating posting chapters between this and the two other stories I have. Hopefully you will enjoy.

Chapter One: A Journey Begins

The sun rose over dozens of small fields and nearby sat several little white houses. The light began touching the cliffside where a white barn-like structure and nearby windmill sat overlooking the town. It was a peaceful town surrounded by lush greenary. Into view came an average-sized two-story blue house with a little garden out front filled with yellow daisies and red roses. A second story window opened up and it was that of a ten year old boy.

A bookshelf sat in one corner that was filled with books about Pokemon Battles and Pokemon Battle Strategies. On the other side of the room was a desk with a desktop computer with even more books piled up next to the desk. Near the window was a bed with the covers all twisted up as if a small tornado had entered the room and hit the bed. The boy, who's had messy dirty blonde hair was getting dressed. The messiness was because the boy just woke up from a night's sleep, rubbing his green eyes. This boy, named Kevin, just turned ten and was getting ready to head to Professor Gary Oak's Laboratory to get his very first Pokémon. Gary had just taken over for his grandfather who finally retired and headed off to Cinnabar Island for a much-needed vacation.

Kevin walked out of his closet wearing blue jeans, black and red sneakers and a grey t-shirt with a Poke ball pattern on it along with a Poke ball hat. Kevin combed his messy hair and then grabbed his grey backpack that he had packed the night before from the end of his bed. He ran down the stairs and then out the door.

As he ran out of his gate onto the sidewalk, he crashed into something or rather someone. It was another boy of his age. He had short black hair and was wearing camo cargo pants with a grey t-shirt with a lightning bolt symbol on the front and had black sneakers. It turned out to be Kevin's best friend Jeremy as they grew up together in this small town of Pallet Town. Jeremy had turned ten just a few months prior but decided to wait for his best friend to turn ten so they could both travel the Kanto Region.

"Ouch," Kevin said, rubbing his head.

"You could watch where you are going," responded Jeremy, who was a little annoyed.

Kevin hadn't realized he just ran into Jeremy and the voice made him do so.

"Jeremy! Going to Oak's lab too?" asked Kevin.

"Yeah man, I told you I was going to wait until you turned ten and we can both travel Kanto," Jeremy responded. "Do you happen to know what you're going to choose?"

"Oh you know I do," Kevin answered. "Do you?"

"Of course!" Jeremy exclaimed with excitement.

The two walked down the street toward the hill that overlooked the town where Oak's lab was located. Once they reached the iron gate that was in front of the stairway up the hill to the lab and opened the gate.

"I'll race you up the stairs!" shouted Jeremy and took off running.

Kevin groaned and ran off too, trying to catch up to Jeremy. The two boys reached the stairs and Jeremy had won the race while Keivn was huffing and puffing to catch his breath like he had just ran a ten mile marathon. Mike pressed the doorbell on the wall by the front door. A tall, slender man in his 30s with spikey brown hair wearing a white lab coat, khaki cargo pants with a brown studded belt and black boots. Under his white lab coat he wore a gun-metal collar shirt.

"Yes?" asked the man, then looked down to see two boys standing on his porch. "Aha, you must be Kevin and Jeremy?"

"Yes sir," both boys said in unison.

"Heh heh," the man laughed. "There's no need for formalities, you can call me Gary."

The two boys smiled.

"So, I bet you guys are here to receive your very first Pokémon, right?" asked Gary.

"Yes, Professor Gary," Kevin answered.

"I sure am!" Jeremy followed.

"Well come on in then," Gary said as he motioned for the two boys to come inside.

The boys walked into the house and into a hallway that was painted green with green tiles layed across the floor. The house had a high ceiling and the boys couldn't believe how big the house actually was since from the outside it looked so small.

"Come this way," Gary said, motioning the boys to continue to follow him. "I'll show you the last two I have."

"The last two?" asked Kevin, slightly disappointed. He began having doubts about getting the Pokémon he really wanted.

"Unfortunately, yes," Gary answered. "Another trainer started her journey yesterday and picked one of the starters already. I haven't had a change to get a replacement."

"Hopefully they didn't take the one I wanted," Jeremy said.

Professor Gary led the boys into a room full of high-tech equipment and computers and it was too much for the two ten-year old boys to comprehend. Gary led them to a table in the middle of the room and sitting on that table were two creatures eating. The first one had a round head, a lizard like body with a tail that had a flame burning brightly at the tip. The creature was red-orange while his belly was just orange. The other creature was a hunter green color with dark green spots all over its body and right on its back was a green bud. The two boys stared, admiring the two Pokémon.

"Well, these are the ones I have left." Gary began, "First we have Charmander, a fire-type Pokémon. And this is Bulbasaur, a grass-type Pokémon."

"Char-man-der, Char!" yawned the fire-type.

"Bulbasaur!" smiled the grass-type.

"Awesome! That trainer didn't take Charmander," yelled Kevin. "Professor, I'll take Charmander."

Gary laughed for a moment and then grabbed a Poké ball, "Okay then, here is Charmander's Poké ball, he's all yours."

"Yes!" Kevin exclaimed. "Charmander, return!"

A bright red light came out from the center the red and white Poke ball hitting Charmander and turning it into energy and returned to the Poke ball.

"That leaves Bulbasaur to me," Mike said. He was just glad it was the Pokémon he wanted.

Professor Gary nodded and handed Mike Bulbasaur's Poke ball. Mike returned Bulbasaur to his Poke ball as well.

Gary walked to a nearby table and grabbed a couple of items off it and walked back to the boys. He had two red electronic devices in his hand.

"I want to also give you boys these," Gary said, giving Kevin and Jeremy each one a red electronic device.

"Cool," the boys said in unison.

"Those devices are what is called a Pokédex. You open it up and it scans Pokémon that you see and tells you what that Pokémon is and what it can do," Gary explained. "It's also your trainer I.D. so if an officer asks for an I.D., just give them your Pokédex."

"One last thing before you guys set off on your adventure," Gary states as he gives Kevin and Jeremy a bag.

The boys look inside the bag that was given to them by Gary to find more Poké balls inside.

"Awesome!" Kevin yelled in excitement, "More Poké balls."

After getting everything they needed from Gary. The boys leave Gary's lab and head back down the stairway.

"I'm so ready to start my journey now!" Jeremy stated.

"So am I," Kevin said. "First I need to go back home and say goodbye to my mother."

"Oh crap!" Jeremy said in a slight panic. "I have to do the same."

The two boys ran from Gary's lab back to their homes so they could finish preparing themselves for their long journey through Kanto.

Kevin reached his house and of course he was out of breath. He walked inside to see a middle-aged woman with brown hair up to the shoulder wearing a blue t-shirt and black capri pants wearing a white apron while she washed the dishes that were in the kitchen sink.

"Mom, I'm back from Professor Gary Oak's lab!" shouted Kevin.

She walked into the living room.

"Oh," she said with a smile, "So what Pokémon did you pick?"

"I'll show you!" Kevin said, excited.

He grabbed the Poké ball off his belt and pressed the white button in the middle which expanded the ball to full size. Kevin pressed the white butten again and with a white flash, Charmander appeared on the coffee table.

"Charmander, Char!" it said.

Kevin's mother looked at it with sparkles in her eyes.

"Aww, it's so cute!" she stated. "I'm sure the two of you will become the best of friends!"

Jeremy walked into his house to see his mother sitting on the couch watching TV. His mother had long black hair and was wearing a house coat.

"Mom, I'm home for a bit," Jeremy said as he walked into the living room.

The living room was a nice set up. There was a nice leather black couch with a marble glass coffee table in the center. A flat screen TV hanging on the wall in front of the couch. The were two small black end tables each with a copper lamp on both side of the couch. His mother looked from the TV to Jeremy.

"Hello dear, care to show mommy what Pokémon you picked?" she asked.

"Come on mom, don't say 'mommy'!" Jeremy stated, feeling embarrassed.

"I'm sorry Hun," she said, sadness evident in her voice as she knew her baby boy was growing up.

"Alright Bulbasaur, come on out!" yelled Jeremy as he threw his Pokeball across the room. It hit the floor space behind the cough and opened up with a white flash revealing the grass-type Pokémon.

"Bulba-" it said, almost as if it was bored.

"Ah!" Jeremy's mother screamed in excitement. "It's so cute! I love it!"

Jeremy's mother started hugging on Bulbasaur in which turned to and looked at Jeremy as if it was saying 'Please get her off of me.'

"Uh Mother, you're choking him," Jeremy said.

"Oh! I'm so sorry," she said as she let the poor Pokémon go.

Bulbasaur looked at the woman with a hint of anger and growled faintly at her.

"I didn't mean to hurt you, honest," Jeremy's mother said in a soothing tone.

"Now how about something to eat before you leave?" Kevin's mother asked, ready to cook.

"No thanks," Kevin said until his stomach growled loudly. "I guess I'll eat after all."

The woman smiled as she gathered ingredients from around the kitchen and started preparing some food for her son one last time before he leaves for his Pokemon journey.

Kevin sat on the couch and let his mind wander while his mother was cooking.

'I can't wait until I start my journey with Charmander on my side. There's no doubt I'll be able to go all the way.'

What seemed just like minutes was actually an hour as Kevin was shaken out of his thoughts by his mother's voice coming from the kitchen.

"Honey, the food's ready!" she yelled from the kitchen.

"Okay Mom," Kevin yelled back as he got up from the couch.

He walked into the kitchen and sat at the dining room tabled where his mother placed down a plate in front of him. The plate contained a massive chesseburger and french fries. Kevin and his mother ate lunch in silence. The boy was busy thinking about the journey he couldn't wait to start. Kevin's mother was thinking about how much her son has grown up and now he is going out on his own to start his Pokemon journey just like his father. Once Kevin was finished eating, he got up and took his place to the kitchen sink where he rinsed it off and placed it in the sink. Kevin then walked to the living room and grabbed his backpack that was full of clothes, supplies and other essentials needed for his journey and then walked to the door.

"Well Mom, I'm heading off now," Kevin said.

His mother sighed as she emerged from the Kitchen, "Okay dear, but you be careful, you hear?"

"Of course, Mom, I'll be fine" Kevin said. He kissed his mother goodbye and raced out the door only to run into something or someone again.

"Ouch, not again," groaned Kevin as he rubbed his head.

"You really need to stop doing that bro," Jeremy said.

"Sorry," Kevin said.

There was a bit of a silence fall between the two friends as they walked down the road to the edge of town. Once they reached the town limits, Jeremy finally broke the silence.

"Where are we headed first?" asked Jeremy.

"We have to go all the way through Viridian City to Pewter City," replied Kevin. "Pewter City is where the first gym is anyway."

"Then our first destination is Pewter City for our first gym badge," stated Jeremy.

The two boys left Pallet Town and began walking down the road to Viridian City. They both stopped and looked back at the small town they've called home. Kevin sighed

"Goodbye, Pallet Town," Kevin said.

The boys had been walking for a good hour as Jeremy was absorbed in the guidebook of Kanto and that's when he noticed the Pewter City gym as a rock-type gym. Jeremy looked up from the guidebook and turned to Kevin.

"I really don't know how you're going to win at the Pewter City Gym with Charmander because according to the guidebook, Pewter City Gym is a rock-type gym," Jeremy explained. "If I'm not mistaken, but rock-types have an advantage over fire-types."

"That's true, but sometimes advantage isn't the best way," Kevin stated. "Strategy can go a long way too."

Jeremy shrugged and dived back into the guidebook when the two heard something rustling in the bushes.

"What was that?" asked Jeremy. They heard the rustling again.

"What is that?" Kevin asked.

"It's coming from the bushes over there," Jeremy said, pointing at some bushes just a few feet away from where they were standing.

"Go check it out," demanded Kevin.

"I don't want to!" protested Jeremy. "What if it's something big like, like, like, well really big!"

Kevin looked at Jeremy, "If it was big, we would be able to see it smart one."

A sweat drop slid down the back of Jeremy's head and laughed it off, "I guess you're right."

A purple-furred rat came running out of the bushes. It had rather long incisors and a curling tail. The purple Pokemon just looked at the two trainers and began eating whatever it had just got out of the bushes.

"Phew, it was only a Rattata," Kevin said, feeling quite amused.

"Meh, it looks weak," Jeremy said, unimpressed by the Pokémon.

Kevin took out his red Pokédex out of his pocket and opened it up. The blue glass ball in the top corner lit up and started flashing. A picture of Rattata appeared on the screen and shortly an electronic voice began talking.

"Rattata, the rat Pokémon. It will eat anything that it can get a hold of. It's small and very quick and will bite anything when it attacks. It's a common sight in many places," the Pokédex explained.

"Maybe I can get some training in," Kevin said as he grabbed the Poké ball of his belt and threw it. "Go, Charmander!"

The ball opened up with a white flash and Charmander appeared.

"Charmander!"

Charmander is ready to battle and Rattata got into its battle position albeit probably just to protect the berries it was eating.

"Wow bro, that Rattata looks ready to battle," Jeremy said.

"Alright Charmander, use your Scratch attack!" ordered Kevin.

The red-orange lizard Pokemon charged at the small purple Pokemon with its claw in the air ready to scartch the rat when the time was righjt. When Charmander got close enough, he tried to scratch the purple Pokémon, but it dodged the attack fairly quickly.

"Rattata, you've just met your demise," Kevin said to himself as if he knew what he was doing. "Charmander, use your tail to hit it!"

Charmander stared down the running Rattata and swung its tail, hitting the small rodent into the ground.

"Ratta-" it said weakly.

"Great! Now finish it with tackle," Kevin ordered and Charmander charged toward the rodent, who was struggling to get up and contact was made. The purple rat then ran off into the woods.

"That was great Charmander!" Kevin yelled with happiness in his voice.

"Char!" it said, excited for its first win.

"Wow, you must have really studied those books long and hard," said Jeremy.

"Yep, I made sure when I became a trainer that I would want to at least know what I Was doing," Kevin said proudly.

"I should have done that myself, but I did watch Pokémon battles on TV, so I do know a little about battling," Mike said.

Kevin looked around to see if he could find any pokemon to see what Jeremy could do. He then noticed a bird with brown spikey feathers on its head and its wings were brown with white at the tips of the wings. The top of its body had black feathers while the bottom was tan. It was a Spearow.

"There you go," Kevin said, pointing at the Spearow.

Mike saw the bird Pokémon and took out his Pokédex and scanned the bird.

"Spearow, the Tiny Bird Pokémon. This Pokémon is very protective of its territory. It will flap its wings busily to dart around at high speeds," the device said.

"Man, it's a flying-type though, Bulbasaur won't..." Jeremy began but was cut off.

"Remember what I said, it's not always about advantage. Sometimes you're backed into a corner like this, so you'd just have to take the offensive anyway," explained Kevin.

Jeremy sighed, "Okay then."

Jeremy grabbed his Poké ball and threw it. The Poké ball opened up with a white flash as Bulbasaur appeared on the ground.

"Bulba!" he said, ready for action.

"You know, that Spearow isn't paying attention," said Kevin, giving Jeremy the heads up.

Jeremy smiled, "Good, then we can make the first move. Bulbasaur, use your vine whip to grab that Spearow."

Bulbasaur nodded his head as two green vines came out of the top of its bulb on the top of its back and stretched all the way to where Spearow was pecking the ground. The vines wrapped around the bird, which was caught off guard and became confused as to what was going on.

"Spearow!" It yelled.

"Bulbasaur, toss it against that tree!" Jeremy ordered.

Bulbasaur swung its vines that were holding the Spearow and let the Spearow go as it flew through the air and into a nearby tree. The Spearow, however, used the momentum to its advantage and bounced off the tree and flew faster than it ever could at Bulbasaur.

"It's coming in for an attack," warned Kevin.

"Bulbasaur, use Razor Leaf!" Jeremy ordered.

Bulbasaur began shooting razor sharp leaves from its bulb on its back. The Spearow, as it was flying like a missile toward Bulbasaur, started to get pelted with razor sharp leaves and began slowing down.

"Now slap it into the ground with Vine Whip!" ordered Jeremy.

Bulbasaur released its vines once again, slapping Spearow hard across its body sending the bird Pokémon straight down into the ground, hard.

"Spearow!" it screamed as it got up and flew away.

"Alright Bulbasaur, we did it!" Celebrated Jeremy.

"That was great," complimented Kevin. "I think we're going to do pretty good on our adventure."

"I think so too," Jeremy agreed.

The sun was beginning to set in the countryside horizon. The sky was filling with different shades of red and orange. It was truely a beautiful sight to see. Kevin looked west and saw the sun setting which he admired for a while then turning back to Jeremy.

"Sunset already?" he questioned. "I can't believe the whole day has gone by already."

"Yeah, I guess we should stop and make camp for the night right here before all daylight is gone," Jeremy suggested.

"Yeah, you're right," said Kevin.

Kevin placed his backpack on the ground and pulled out a Kanto Guidebook of his own and looked at the map. He studied it for a bit to see how far they were until they reached Viridian City.

"It looks like we'll make it to Viridian City by tomorrow," Kevin said.

"Great!" Jeremy said, "We'll be that much closer to Pewter City."

Kevin opened his backpack and took out his sleeping bag, which was rolled up. The two boys continued to set up camp as the sun slowly set and sunlight got dimmer. They built a nice fire and set their tents up and began cooking dinner. After eating and feeding their Pokemon, the two trainers crawled into their tents and into their sleeping bags and drifted off to sleep. Both couldn't wait until morning to come so their journey can continue.
