Leo burst into what looked like his bedroom, tears running down his face. He seemed very young- almost as young as the first memory shown. For the first time, the "camera" seemed to be at Leo's side, and not facing him directly.
"Oh- was this your first foster home?" Hazel asked.
"Yeah," Leo said shortly. "I was only there for a few days. You'll find out why, I guess."
Frank glanced at Leo in concern. That didn't sound very good.
He slammed the door behind him and practically sprinted over to his bed. Swiping away the tears, he pulled out a small, dark blue backpack and began shoving things into it. Some clothes, what looked like a bit of money, a water bottle and some odd snacks he grabbed off the bedside table.
As he did so, footsteps had been racing up the stairs. But now, it seemed that they were too close for Leo's liking.
He zipped up his bag so fast he almost broke it, and spun around on his heel to run to the door before the footsteps could get there.
In doing so, he revealed the left side of his face to the demigods for the first time that memory.
All of a sudden, it was horribly clear to Frank why the camera had been facing Leo's side, and he felt sick.
A long, deep gash was on Leo's cheek, a few centimetres below his eye. It was so fresh that it was still bleeding quite a lot, leaving trails of blood tracing a path from the wound to his jaw like bloody tears.
No one said anything, but how they felt about this was clear on their faces.
Piper's hand seemed to drift towards her blade. Small sparks of electricity jumped between Jason's fingers, apparently without his knowledge. Hazel's grip tightened on Frank's hand, and Annabeth dug her nails into the sofa so hard it ripped. Percy's eyes darkened, and he looked murderous- a terrifying sight. Frank inched away from him.
Leo, on the other hand, seemed abnormally unbothered by this. Frank frowned slightly, but didn't say anything.
He strode towards the door, and got there less than a second after the footsteps.
The door started to open, but Leo slammed it shut before it could fully open. Whoever the footsteps belonged to paused for only a second, before hammering on the door.
"Leo!" a man's voice said. It was clear that he was forcing himself to stay calm. "Open the door, please."
Leo pressed his back against the door and brought a few materials out of his pocket, instantly beginning to tinker with them. When the man outside tried to open the door again, Leo instantly shoved it closed.
"Leo, please, I'm sorry, it was an accident," the man said, still trying to push the door open. The doorknob rattled.
Leo kept a stony face, his eyes fixed on whatever it was that he was making.
"Leo? Can we please just talk about this?"
Leo ignored him. His invention seemed to be done now, and it was suddenly clear what it was. It was a makeshift lock, which Leo attached to the doorknob. When the man tried to open the door again, it didn't work.
Frank frowned. How had that worked? It shouldn't be physically possible.
Leo relaxed ever so slightly, and instantly dove for the bag on the floor. He slung it over his shoulder and walked over to the window.
"Please say you didn't jump off another roof," Frank groaned before he could stop himself.
Leo grinned cheekily, as if he was entirely unaffected by the scene before them. "Nah, this one's different. You'll see in a minute."
Leo pushed open the window and, sure enough, he climbed back. He glanced at the door one last time, where the man was still banging on the door, shouting at Leo to open the damn door.
And then he started walking across the roof, slowly, carefully, crouched down so that he wouldn't fall too far. He kept a single hand on the roof to steady himself, and made his way over to a tree right by the roof.
"Please say you didn't do it," Jason said, almost to himself it seemed.
Leo grinned sheepishly, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Parkour?"
Cautiously, he stood up and stepped onto what looked like a somewhat strong branch. He instantly started moving towards the tree trunk, and when he got there, began climbing down.
It didn't take long for his feet to touch the floor, and as soon as he did, he took off running. Never once looking back.
The memory ended. Leo seemed unbothered by what they had just watched.
"How are you okay with this?" Hazel asked.
Leo shrugged. "That place never really felt like home anyway. Leaving it wasn't too much of a big deal."
"But your cheek…" Annabeth trailed off.
"Meh, I've had worse," Leo said. "Hurt at the time, of course, but looking back on it, it wasn't a bad injury. I'm still glad I left though. Who knows what it could have escalated to."
"Fair enough," Percy said. "Also, off-topic, but did anyone hear the man's name in their heads?"
Everyone shook their heads.
"Probably because you didn't really need to know his name to understand the memory," Leo theorised.
Before Frank could even think about that concept, Hera's voice rang out once again.
"Demigods, it is time for you to eat. There will be no more memories today. You will be directed to your sleeping quarters."
Frank raised his eyebrows. "We get sleeping quarters?"
Hera did not reply.
Instead, a massive pizza appeared in front of them, big enough to feed a family of ten. They instantly started grabbing slices and taking large bites.
It was heavenly. Frank genuinely did not understand how pizza could be so good. There was even a blue section which Percy declared to be reserved for him and Annabeth. No one argued, too busy eating the sections they could eat.
Frank's section was pepperoni, and he finished it within minutes. Soon, everyone was done eating, and the door opened.
Everyone stood around awkwardly. "Do we-" Frank began.
"I think so," Annabeth said uncertainly. "Let's just give it a try."
So they stepped outside, and started following a golden light which lit their path. It soon led them to two doors, one with Girls on it in fancy script, and the other with Boys. The demigods quickly said their goodbyes, and entered their respective dorms.
After changing into the pjs provided and brushing his teeth, Frank lay down in his bed, staring at the wall. He was surprisingly sleepy after the day of watching Leo's memories. Abuse, smoking, death. Friendships, laughter, understanding.
The last thing which went through Frank's mind before he fell asleep was I wonder what'll happen next.
Ok so this is what i was talking about in the author's notes at the beginning.
I recently received a private message from someone who wanted me to continue this fic. Now obviously I appreciate a positive message from someone who enjoys the fic, but this was incredibly rude and violent.
This person was threatening me if i didn't continue the fic with things i will not mention here so that we can keep this chapter PG. I understand that it can be annoying when someone doesn't update the fics you enjoy, but threats are never ok.
I've had a lot going on with school and other issues lately so my fics probably won't be updated a lot. Just please leave a review or a favourite every once in a while and i will get to it eventually. I hope you enjoy the rest of the fic.
