A/N The net and the deer are both methods Cain uses on the show to try to catch the werewolf. No explanation is given as to how he tracked the werewolf. But there is a hint of a possibilty given in Cain's explanation, if Cain chose to use Magic.

Alex sat nearby patiently waiting for the werewolf, who'd reverted to human form, to wake up. Buffy approached and eyed the sleeping person and then turned to Alex. "We're all curious as to how the hunter found him so fast. We've only known there was a werewolf in town for one full moon cycle, we'd have known if it was in Sunnydale last full moon cycle last month, wouldn't we?"
"Since its general behavior wouldn't have been any different, yes, I'm sure we would have. As for the hunter, he tried to trap the werewolf in the National Forest. He drove his truck right passed the warning signs, the very clearly illuminated signs that said no vehicles allowed in the National Forest and no hunting in the National Forest and wolves are a protected species in the National Forest, one after another. And once he was in the Forest, he strung up a deer he shot several miles from Sunnydale and injected with a tranquilizer. He wasn't just a hunter hunting a potential threat, he was in it for the money."
"What kind of money is there in werewolves?"
"Three kinds, the pelt, like most animal's, is a trophy, the meat is a delicacy and the organs and bones can be used in black magic rituals. But in order to get any of it, the hunter has to paralyze the werewolf and remove everything they can while the werewolf is alive, because the moment they die, they revert to human form."
"And that's what this hunter intended for our werewolf?"
"Yes, the wild pack caught him in the woods laying his trap with the deer. Rory brought his truck and body out this morning. Wolves rarely eat humans unless they're starving. Wolfbloods are no different, we're not cannibals. His truck is a mobile processing center, everything he needed to carve the werewolf apart until he had everything he wanted."
"That's disgusting and it also means he's a murderer, werewolves are humans and he knew it."
"And we also found out how he learned about our werewolf or at least we think we know. He recently processed another werewolf in the truck, as in within a couple of days. And he takes trophies from the werewolves he kills, a tooth pulled out while they're in wolf form. He wore them on a necklace around his neck. Molly has identified Magic paraphernalia in the truck too, she's speculating that he uses the teeth to do magical locator spells to track new werewolves. One tooth would locate the werewolf it came from, all of them together would pinpoint another werewolf."
"I guess that would explain it, but what I don't understand is if he knows werewolves exist and hunted them, how did he not know Sunnydale's reputation, at least the old one? Wouldn't he know the werewolf might have sanctuary here, at the very least under Mayor Wilkins he might have been allowed to hunt humans freely, the vampires were allowed to. So him coming here hunting something that was possibly under Mayor Wilkins protection would have upset someone. Either he didn't care or he had his own understanding with Mayor Wilkins, which then makes me wonder, did he not know Mayor Wilkins is dead which would then suggest whatever agreement he might have had would no longer be honored?"
"All excellent questions that we may not ever know the answers too, with both of them dead. There's one more question you haven't asked."
"What's that?" Buffy asked curiously.
"Where he left the previous werewolves he killed. Molly Is doing individual locator spells using each tooth. We hope to find their remains and maybe give their families some peace of mind."
"The Hell of not knowing." Buffy looked sick, once again remembering how she'd runaway and left her mother in that particular Hell once. Those few hours where they hadn't known where Dawn was last Halloween had given Buffy a glimpse into that particular Hell herself. Yes answers, as terrible as those answers could be, were better than the not knowing.
"So, we know this guy lives here in Sunnydale and he didn't go around as a werewolf last month, which we've already established." Alex changed the subject. "Which means he wasn't born a werewolf, he was bitten by one. So now he knows the supernatural exists for himself and he's a part of it, whether he likes it or not. That just begs one question." Alex looked over at the redhead sitting next the bed anxiously waiting for the werewolf to wake up. "Why didn't you take your own advice, Will and let your boyfriend know the supernatural exists? He was as vulnerable to a vampire attack as anyone else and if he'd known werewolves existed too, he might have been able to take precautions to avoid a run in with a werewolf."
"I don't know, it just never occured to me to tell him." Willow answered staring at her boyfriend. "I was more worried about Mrs. Summers being targeted on purpose because vampires could find out she's The Slayer's mother. I had more then six months to talk to him about it and it never once crossed my mind. I just hope he's not mad at me about it."
"We'll know soon," Alex answered. "he's waking up."
Oz opened his eyes and saw Willow sitting by his bed and inhaling smelled the fact that people were nearby, something that he would not have registered before.
"Huh?"
