So, we know that Bill was canonically the Secret Keeper for Shell Cottage. This means that people can be the Secret Keepers for their own houses. I think James should have made himself Secret Keeper.
Lily Potter nee Evans was sitting at the kitchen table across from her husband James, who had a very serious expression on his face.
"Lily," said James clearly, "I have made a very important decision about our future."
"I see you have an extremely serious look on your face," observed Lily, "Is this about who should choose to be our Secret Keeper? Does this mean you have already made that choice?"
"I am going to be our Secret Keeper," said James fiercely, "I am only going to trust myself and no one else with the fate of my child and son."
"Do you trust anyone between Dumbledore, Sirius, Remus, and Peter?" Lily asked James calmly.
"Sirius most of them all and Peter least of them all," said James bluntly, "But the only way I can be 100% secure about the safety and well being of my wife and son is take the responsibility and shoulder the burden of it myself."
After a minute and a nanosecond of silence, Lily piped up, "You know what James? I think you have made the right decision to select yourself as our Secret Keeper. In times like these it's impossible to know who to trust and why or why not."
"Not to mention," added James, "You never know who's controlling who, who's pulling whose strings, who has full control of his or her own actions vs being controlled by the Imperius Curse. This is the only way to go." Then there's the fact that, to be blunt about it, I'm the one who has the most vested in this decision. It's the lives of my son, my wife, and myself as well as my house that are at stake here. "
"So," said Lily slowly, "You are saying that because you are the one who this decision is the most important to that you feel that you should shoulder the load yourself and not rely on anyone else?"
"That's exactly what I am saying," confirmed James, "I'll be the one who is most motivated to take this responsibility seriously and there the one most likely to get it right. Furthermore, by giving myself this responsibility, I ensure that no one can undercut us. With me as Secret Keeper, no one can betray us, and Voldemort won't be able to get to us."
"I do trust you here," said Lily comfortably, "I know you are powerfully magical, and you are certainly capable of casting a perfect Secret Keeper Charm."
"That's another factor," added James crisply, "I know I can trust myself to cast the Secret Keeper Spell both strongly and correctly. Why leave our fate in the hands of others when I have the ability to protect us myself?"
"I'm feeling a bit relieved," said Lily peacefully, "I'll admit that I been nervous about this process. I have been nervously awaiting the moment that you would inform me of who you have chosen as our Secret Keeper. After hearing that you have chosen to do it yourself, I can honestly say that I am a lot more at ease knowing that you are going to protect us yourself rather than farming out that responsibility to anyone else."
"So do I and that's why I made the decision to do it myself," replied James peacefully.
