Chapter 12
As they entered Sean's building Mac asked, "Aren't we worried about our tails?"
"No, these agents are just here to report on what they see. As far as they know we could be watching a ball game. If it takes a while to find what we need then I guess we caught a doubleheader."
"So these aren't the best of the best watching us?" Mac asked with a grin.
"I wouldn't know, but if they are told to watch and report, then that's what they are going to do. If we run out of here, guns drawn, they are going to react, make no mistake. That's not going to happen so let them sit there and watch my building. We've got work to do. Besides, I didn't even notice them today."
"Huh, come to think of it, neither did I." They only thought about that for a moment then it was time to get down to work.
It had taken them a little longer to find the trail this time. Until this point, Anna and Robert had been avoiding larger commercial airlines. Now that they had checked those as well, they were a lot closer to their goal. Sean was smiling at the phone number in his hand. Elizabeth Thompson had checked into a hotel in Halifax NS, two days ago and was still a registered guest there.
"Should we give them a call?" Sean asked with a grin.
"What if your phone line's been tapped?" Mac wanted to know for sure it was them but didn't want to put them at risk.
"Not in this office, the WSB was nice enough to ensure these lines cannot be tapped. I the lines are tampered with in any way there will be a high-pitched noise as soon as I pick up the receiver so I know not to use it." Sean picked up the phone and started dialling. He nodded over at Mac when he was put through to their room.
Neither Robert nor Anna were expecting the room phone to start ringing. When it did, Anna wasn't sure if they should even answer it but, also knew it could just be the hotel calling up to their room for some reason. "Hello?"
"Oooh Anna, it is really good to hear your voice." Sean let out a slight sigh as he patted Mac on the back happily.
Anna's eyes lit up as she looked over at Robert. "Yours too. I am so glad you found us, Sean."
"Us, I love hearing that! We knew you two were together." Sean was grinning ear to ear.
"Robert's here, he's alive! He does need some medical attention but we're good. We're safe. What kind of danger are we in? Who's after us?"
"I don't know, the WSB is watching all of us, including your daughter."
"Yeah, I'm sure they aren't happy about me escaping their protection. I take it, Mac had to help."
"That's how I got into the room to figure out what names you two are using. He's right here, grinning like an idiot. What's my old buddy dealing with?"
Robert had joined Anna. Standing behind her, Anna was holding the receiver so they could both listen. "Memory loss," he answered, "Not complete, but a lot. I most likely need brain surgery of some sort and that shouldn't wait much longer."
"Oh, it's good to hear your voice too, old buffy." Sean smiled over at Mac then pressed a button putting them on speakerphone. "Your brother's here too."
"Hey, Robby."
"Mac, how's our girl?" Anna asked quickly.
"She's good, she's really good. I think the fact her mom stopped in for a visit a while back helped. Robin still hasn't told us about that visit, we had to figure it out on our own," Mac told her proudly.
"I had to see her. I couldn't let her go on thinking we were dead." Robert wrapped his arms around her a little tighter as she spoke. They both missed Robin so much but Robert knew it was even harder on Anna.
"Of course, you couldn't. Alright, we can catch up later. What is it you need most right now?" Mac asked.
"Information, we need to know if we're at risk if we come home," Anna told them.
"Travel insurance for Stephen Conner would help. I could get the treatment I need here and be on the mend while you find out what we're facing now." Robert added.
"That I should be able to help you with," Sean told them with a grin. "Do you have any idea if Faison survived as well?"
"If what I was told is true he did, yeah," Anna told them. "That is who the WSB is looking for, that's who they're after. That is why they wanted to keep me under wraps. It had something to do with them bringing Faison down."
"If Faison believes the world thinks he's dead then he might not hide his tracks as well as he should. Lazy way of finding him but it might work. I don't understand why everyone needs to believe you're dead," Sean muttered.
"I don't either," Anna agreed.
"We can try to figure that out later. What's the plan, Sean? We need to do whatever it is, so we can come home," Robert cut in.
"First thing, I'm going to get you the insurance you need then you can start recouping while me and your kid brother figure out what danger you two are facing. Once we know that we can plan how we deal with it and bring you both home."
They agreed on that then Anna told them what their cover story had been if he was going to have to fake the papers then having the right back story is a must. They talked a little longer answering more questions both pairs had but didn't want to talk too long, there was work to be done.
"Alright, thanks, Sean. Call us when you have it," Anna said.
"I will. Oh, it is so good to hear your voices." Sean didn't care that he was grinning like a fool. Robert and Anna are alive and they had made contact, what could be better than that?
"Take care of yourselves. I expect you back here soon," Mac told them, he couldn't stop smiling either.
"We'll do our best. Alright, bye," Anna said then hung up. She turned to Robert, "I was hoping they'd find us."
"You did something to help that, didn't you?"
"I used our backup plan. If we were in danger and needed their help, Mac and Sean had to work together to find the clues needed. It was your idea actually. Mac can get into the secret room we put in but only Sean knew about the second safe and the combination."
"I've got to say. I seem to have some pretty good ideas," he said, sounding quite confident
Anna smiled, loving how right he was, "Yeah, sometimes."
Robert took her hand and led her over to the bed, pulling her down onto it with him. "I'm going to get the help I need. Someone is going to fix my head. Our friends are going to help us get home and with any luck, I will finally get to make love to my wife."
Anna smiled as she cuddled in beside him, putting her head on his chest. "I get the feeling this could still take some time. Hopefully, the sex part doesn't have to wait until we're home."
"That is only waiting as long as medically required. I'd do it right now, if that would help you, I'd gladly offer my services." He kissed her shoulder, holding her close.
Anna laughed, "Those services will wait, thank you."
"I thought you might say that." Robert couldn't stop grinning. They now have help. They should have some answers about what they are facing before long. He is going to get the medical attention he needs soon. Things are starting to fall into line, he will get his life back.
"I think we should find something on TV to watch. I want to stay like this, we get the rest of the day just for cuddling with a nice dinner later. I think we've earned it."
Robert kissed her on the top of her head. "I agree."
For a little, over three weeks they had been on the move. Except for one magical day they have been on a mission. Now, finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Soon, with any luck, they will be at the end.
…
Colin Ross was pacing in his hotel room, now that he knew Faison was somewhere in Central America he wanted to be part of the search, part of the hunt. He was getting tired of being in Port Charles. Anna Scorpio was not going to show up here until she'd found her husband. It had been a month and a half since she escaped the Bird's Nest. How quickly could she have gotten down to civilization? How far did she get before those morons figured out she was even missing? If Anna had come here she was long gone by now. She was most likely long gone when they got here and is the dark-haired lady down in Argentina. If Donely or the brother know anything they are hiding that fact very well.
Ross knows he is being punished for all his recent mistakes and to make it worse the team he has here is all a little bitter about the assignment. It was not lost on him that they all think what has been done to the Scorpios is wrong. If they could just see past that, see that this is about stopping Cesar Faison. This isn't even about the Scorpios, they are just an unfortunate part of this because of Faison. Bringing Faison to justice should be the only thing they are focused on. They should understand the need to use whatever resources they have to stop Faison. If only he had listened to Scorpio two years ago when he came to him and told him Faison was alive. All of this could have been avoided and he would have been the big hero, bringing in Faison, but he hadn't and now he needed a win.
Thankfully, this wasn't the only team he had working on this situation though. Roundtree is heading up the team searching for Faison and reporting back to Ross. The WSB doesn't need to know that though. Ross wants to be the big hero this time. He's messed up a lot lately and wants to rebuild his reputation. Being a part of bringing Faison in once and for all will go a long way to doing that. The director will see what he's done.
They will forget about his mistakes, he won't go down as the one that let Faison get away if he can be the one to bring him in. No matter what it takes he will be the one to finally stop Faison once and for all. Ross picked up his glass of scotch and finished it off. Maybe just one more, then he should get some sleep.
…
Since talking to Sean and Mac two nights before Robert and Anna hadn't been doing much of anything. They knew Sean had better resources to find the information they needed. Until he gets them the paperwork they need so Robert can get treatment, they had agreed that lazy days spent together was the only order of business and the rest would do Robert well. They both loved that they could just relax and talk. They would spend hours talking, a lot of that time they were cuddled together.
At least once a day they would end up in the whirlpool tub, it was big enough for two and they enjoyed the sensual touching they allowed themselves to get away with while submerged in the bubbles.
"Why does it seem like I'm used to not being able to be with you? You make it sound like we quite enjoy our sex life. Why make me wait, why turn me down?" Other than their heads the only parts of them not submerged in hot water were her foot and his hands as he gave her a foot rub.
"I didn't, we didn't, it wasn't like that. We knew we couldn't. So even if the situation would have made it very easy to cross that line, we didn't."
"Ahh, this was when we were involved with other people?"
"Yes, you were married to Holly when I barged in and made you hear me out. I didn't know about her at first. When I did, I might have framed her for a little theft. I came clean about that and I could tell you were happy with her so I backed off but I think, I know, some damage was done to that relationship because of me. Well, the fact, there was a 'first' wife was a big problem."
"A first wife that I still loved." The way he said it Anna knew he felt sure it was true.
She grinned, "That you had a child with me. You did not know about Robin until she showed up at your house."
"Holly wasn't upset about that was she?" He was trying to understand Holly and what her modifications might have been during that time. He knew about her because of things Anna had told him but like many of the other people she had talked about, there wasn't much he knew other than she had been very important to him. He felt that had to be true.
"No, as far as I know, she always loved Robin. She wasn't in Port Charles at that point so I actually don't really know how she took the news about Robin, how she reacted to that."
Robert wanted to remember, he had been married to Holly, he must have loved her but, "I was still in love with you. I think that was the problem."
"You sound pretty sure about that, Scorpio."
"I know what feelings are right. I have always loved you, Anna. I know that's true. That is a fact, I don't think that can ever change either."
Anna smiled lovingly at him. "Well, um. After I had to accept you'd moved on, you and Holly were living in Australia. That's where Duke comes in. I loved him and I know he loved me. We were on-again, off-again for a while, at one point I think there could have been a chance for us but maybe you weren't ready after losing Holly and I did love him so, who knows. You and I played at being a couple for several cases during that time. You gave me away at our wedding and you were there to hold me the night he was killed in a warehouse fire right in front of us. Again the night he died in my arms." There were tears falling from her eyes. Anna found these conversations strangely therapeutic. Thinking about their history, talking about it. Telling him her perspective of what happened between them over the years. It was helping them both, only in very different ways.
"Was he a good man?"
"He was an imperfect man that wanted to be better. He loved me. For a long time, I had believed I didn't deserve that. It was nice to be loved again."
Robert could tell it was a little painful telling him these things, "So how long before you were tying me to a pillar?" He thought it was time to lighten the tone a little.
"Oh, we still have a couple of years and another significant other to go through before that happened," Anna told him with a grin. "You were on the verge of a new romance of your own when I lost Duke. Katherine, Katie was a pretty good match for you and you two almost got married but we learned the truth and Faison came back into all our lives. When push came to shove you couldn't take that last step and fully commit to her. That was when Kate told you she already had a concert tour booked and left town ending your relationship."
"Just like that, she just up and ended it?" Again as Anna spoke of his past love, he knew what she was saying seemed right and like Holly, he was sure he had once cared deeply for Katherine. The feelings connected to them were nowhere near as strong as the ones he feels for Anna.
"No, she'd broken it off once before that, months before. Right after Sean told us we never should have broken up. Kate told us both we are still in love with each other. You did get back together for a time but you told me it was not the same. You see, Sean told us a lot we needed to know and it planted this seed in my head. I imagine you're as well. Once we knew we most likely never would have broken up if not for him and Faison I think we were always kind of wondering what if. Wondering if that was true."
"I couldn't marry Kate because I was in love with you. Is that what you're telling me?"
Anna blushed a little, "No one ever came right out and said that."
He felt so sure of it, how could he not have told her? "I never told you I've always loved you?"
Anna smiled, "Of course you did. On our honeymoon. You admitted that you never stopped loving me, never, not once in the entire time we were apart. I can picture it so well. Standing in your arms as we look out the window, onto the little terrasse. Everything was perfect, finally, in the room where it all began, I knew my heart was home."
"We belong together. We were made for each other. We have a love story that could make a best seller." Is he really this sappy romantic, Robert wondered with a little grin as he continued the foot rub.
"I don't know about that," Anna said with a laugh. "It was a long road back to each other with more than our share of adventures heartache and trouble along the way. I love that I had you there for the ride with me. Even if I couldn't call you mine, I knew you always had my back. You would always be there for me, no matter what you are in my corner."
"Because I love you."
Anna laughed, "Because you love me and I love you and damn anyone that tried to come between that." All she wanted to do was move to him, wrap herself around him and give in to what they both wanted. Instead, she sighed, "I think it's time to get dressed." She grinned then got out of the tub, taking her time, giving Robert a bit of a show before finally wrapping a towel around herself.
"You're a tease and I love it." Robert closed his eyes and put his head back. He'd give her more than enough time to get dressed. The teasing, the flirting, it was fun but they knew they could only take it so far. That would be when Anna, usually, would give them enough space that they didn't end up in bed together.
…
What are they working on? Robin wondered as she went to the kitchen to get something to eat. Her uncles had been working away in the den for a few days now. Their heads together, looking for something, more likely someone. Robin smiled, by now they must have figured out something is going on.
Robin knew her mother had needed something from the house. That she hadn't been there only to see her. She's travelling, she needs money, probably an ID. Robin grinned again, Mac and Sean must have figured out that some things were missing. They must be trying to find them. That has to be it.
Robin realized she was actually dancing around a little to the song in her head as she made her sandwich. If Sean and Mac are looking for them, then her parents are going to get some much-needed help. That should mean they can come home even sooner.
After getting some juice Robin went and sat at the table. She happily ate her sandwich as she dreamed about what her parents were doing right now. A tear rolled down her cheek as she finished, Robin wanted to know if there was any news. Had she found him? How does she ask if they've found her parents without telling them about her mother's visit?
Robin took her dishes over to the sink and washed them. What if she brought up the people watching them? That might get them talking. Yeah, if they are both still here she is going to see what they want to tell her. Her mind made up, Robin went to the den and poked her head in. "Hi, what has you both so busy the last little while?"
Sean looked up, "Hi, Robin. Come in." He tossed the folder he was holding onto the desk.
"You've been busy in here the last few days. Aren't you worried the people watching us are going to want to know what you're up to?"
Mac laughed, he was sitting on the couch reading printouts of new reports. "I told you she's noticed them."
"Of course, I've noticed them, Uncle Mac. They aren't really even trying to hide any longer." Robin walked over to the desk, "Uncle Sean, what are you two working on?" Then she placed her hands on the desk and leaned towards him. She wasn't going to let on about what she already knows.
Sean smiled, "We are working on a plan actually."
"What kind of plan?" she wasn't going to back down until she knew what was going on.
"It is to aid in a rescue mission. Fact-finding, giving intel. That kind of thing."
Robin smiled, they know, they are helping her. Or are they helping them? Had she found him? Her face must have given away her thoughts.
Sean smiled and softly said, "It's classified as a rescue mission until they make it home."
"She, she found him?" Robin asked weakly, could that be what he's saying?
"Even better, she found him then we found them."
Her mouth dropped open, Robin looked over and saw Mac smiling. She rushed around the desk and hugged Sean. "They're alive!"
"Your parents are alive and together. We talked to them the other day. I would call them right now but I don't trust the phone line here as much as mine."
"Can I be there the next time you call them?" Robin asked excitedly. She needed to hear their voices.
"Of course, sweety." He had his hands on her shoulders, "You're mom confirmed that she was here."
Robin smiled even more, "I came home and she was in my room waiting for me with Friday. She told me about being held by the WSB, escaping and making her way here. She hid out for a little bit then came here. She'd been gone for, I bet, almost a week the first time I noticed you were being followed, Uncle Mac. They were following you before me."
"You've been watching them as long as they've been watching us, haven't you?" Mac noted with a smile.
"Maybe," she said, shrugging her shoulders. "I was spending a lot of time in my room then so I would sit and watch out my window, that's why I noticed them. I knew they were here looking for Mom so it was amusing knowing they were just wasting their time."
"Anna picked up a few things and was out of town long before the WSB was here. That actually makes me happy knowing that," Mac said. He had walked over and was now hugging Robin.
"With a little help from a friend," Robin grinned.
"Of course," Sean let out a little laugh as he clapped his hands. "The best part is she is always the last one anyone would expect."
"She never actually came right out and told me but," Robin grinned at Sean as she hung onto her Uncle Mac. "she didn't deny it either."
"It makes perfect sense to me and the best part is there is no way anyone in the WSB will even suspect she was involved."
"Who are we talking about?" Mac finally asked having stepped back a little, now standing in the middle of the den.
"Olin. Who do you think helped Mom when she was here?" Robin asked, feeling gitty.
"I wouldn't have thought of Olin, that's for sure," Mac admitted.
"Oh, you have no idea the kind of situations she has helped us in over the years," Sean told him with a grin. "She won't say a thing until Anna and Robert are back here. She probably won't say anything after that either."
Robin wasn't interested in any of that so she asked, "What are my parents facing and when can I talk to them? There are a few things I need to tell them."
"I think you should come over tomorrow afternoon. I should have an update for them by then and I know you all need to talk to each other."
Robin was crying as she smiled up at her godfather, "I'd like that very much." She missed her mom and dad desperately and getting to hear their voices might not be much but it was enough for her to hold onto.
Sean's face lit up, "I'm sure you would. You've been keeping this quiet for a while now so I know we don't need to tell you not to say anything."
"I won't say a thing. I'm not putting them in danger!"
"Good, alright tomorrow you'll be there while we brief them. Then we will all know what they are dealing with.'
"Thank you, Uncle Sean." Robin grinned at both of them. "I guess I should let you get back to work. Talk to you later, Uncle Mac." With a big smile on her face, Robin left the den and happily went up to her room.
