Chapter 20
Silently the three of them walked up the hall to Robert and Anna's room. The elevator ride had been uncomfortable but now this silence was eating at them all. What was going on? The two women that looked so strictly similar kept looking up at each other. Uncertainty and mistrust on both their faces. Neither of them understood what could be happening or why. Robert walked behind them until they reached the door where they both stopped and turned to face each other. Anna folded her arms across her chest as he unlocked the door. None of this was sitting well with her and she wanted answers.
"After you," he said. Neither of the women moved. Robert looked at Anna and arched his eyebrow, she tilted her head slightly, then turned and went inside. "Please, we can talk privately inside," Robert said to Alexandra.
She didn't move at first, studying the man asking her into his room. He was meant to be a patient in the study, he had run away from her, this shouldn't be a trap. "Alright."
Once they were all inside Anna turned to the other woman. She looked her over once more, studying every detail. "I am very confused. I have no idea what is going on here."
Alex looked the other woman over again as well. "You are not the only one." The two women were now facing, sizing up each other. Slowly they started circling each other, could this really be happening? Could they really be looking at their own doppelganger? "Seeing you, I now understand why your husband ran out of the room when he saw me."
Anna stopped moving when she was beside Robert again, "Sorry, what is your name?"
"Doctor Alexandra Devane, and you are?"
Anna looked up at Robert. How is this possible? If she is a Devane, who are they to each other? How can they not tell her who they are? Robert raised an eyebrow as he tilted his head, giving it a little shake. Anna sighed then turned back to Alexandra. "If I tell you can you still help my husband?"
A confused look washed over Alexandra's face, "Of course, he would still be in the study, he just needs to stay there."
Anna looked up at Robert briefly, "Um, yeah we'll get back to that. You say you're a Devane. Well, so am I."
"I could believe that we would be related. I am trying to figure out how you can look so much like me." the doctor admitted.
Robert stepped a little closer, "I think what she's trying to get to is, does it matter that our names are different than the ones on my file?"
Alexandra looked over at him then back at Anna. "Why are you using fake names? And what did you mean before that we could all be in danger? What have you gotten me into? Why'd you bring me here?"
Anna looked over at Robert once more, then just started pouring it all out. "My name is Anna Devane Scorpio, this is my husband Robert Scorpio. We have both been pronounced dead and basically are in hiding for our own safety. The organization we once worked for is after another person that was also pronounced dead in the same accident that apparently killed us. They're not dead either. Since Robert was injured and we were separated for quite some time after. It took time before we could get somewhere we felt safe to get him help. We now have some friends helping us and they found out there is a plan to lure this man out of hiding by using someone that looks enough like me that he would be fooled by them. I think Robert would tell you he ran out of that room more for that reason than that you look like me. As odd as," she paused, "this is," Anna said gesturing between the two of them.
"Who are Stephen Conner and whatever his wife's name was then?"
"Just a couple of our alias," Robert told her sounding nonchalant. "Other than the location and that it was on a boat not on land the story about how I was injured is basically true. Can you still help me?"
"Yeah, just come back to the hospital and we can get started." Alex was being pulled by two very different sides, concerned doctor and confused woman.
"That can't happen," Anna stated as they both shook their heads. There is no way Robert will set foot back in that hospital.
"What? Why not?" Alex could tell they were both very worried about this situation but she didn't fully understand why.
"You heard what I said about the trap using someone that looks like me."
"Yeah, that doesn't mean I believe I'm in danger. That doesn't mean it's me."
Anna had too many questions running through her head to explain. If this woman wanted to be in denial that was just too bad. "Who are you, I mean who raised you? I don't mean to sound crazy and none of this makes sense but look at us, we could be twins."
Alexandra let out a sigh, it was like looking in a mirror. If they aren't twins how else could this be explained? "My mother's name is Charlotte Devane, I never knew my father."
Anna thought about that for a moment. "I think there was an Aunt Charlotte that could have taken me in at one point but declined for whatever reason." Had it been she was worried people would wonder why she suddenly had two kids that looked exactly the same. "When is your birthday?"
"The 29th of October."
Anna looked over at Robert. "October 29th is mine as well," she said as she started to pace. Anna had a very bad feeling about all of this.
"What did you mean she declined to take you in? Where is your family? Why did you need to be taken in?" Alex wanted answers, these two clearly didn't know what was going on and neither did she.
"Their dead, after my parents were gone we were moved around. My older sister died and then I was shuffled around even more. I was seventeen when I left." Anna couldn't say anything else, she couldn't put her thoughts into words. There was too much running through her mind.
After a moment, "That must be Uncle Thomas' family. We never really talked about them. I only know that they had died, he was my father's brother. Now looking at us, it's like you and I could be long-lost twins," Alexandra suggested. "I don't understand any of this."
Anna looked up at her, "Yeah." Just then the phone started ringing. "Ignore it, Robert." He just nodded and moved closer to her putting his hand on her back.
"Should I call my mother? See if she knows anything about this. Maybe it's really strong genes."
"That just happened to ensure you two were born on the same day?" Robert asked sarcastically.
"Well, I don't know." Alex how no idea what was happening here.
Robert wasn't about to stop. "This seems like something she would have mentioned over the years. Even if she only brought it up in passing that you had a cousin that looked exactly like you that just happened to be born on the same day. Ha, isn't it funny how life works? You know that kind of thing."
Anna looked over, "Please don't call your mother. I think we can deal with this on our own. We could all be in danger and if other people start asking questions about things, that might not otherwise matter, who knows what could happen." Anna didn't want anyone else knowing about this at the moment, not even a family member.
"Alright, so do you think we're twins? Anna and Alex, separated at birth?" Alex asked.
"I honestly don't know, but I assume so," Anna said, running her fingers through her hair. "What else could it be. I don't even care about that at the moment. Sorry, we are dealing with a lot of other things."
"We can't go home to our daughter, Robert started to explain, "until the WSB has let this plan of their play out. If we try to they will detain us and lock us away somewhere. I wouldn't be getting the help I need and our daughter wouldn't know where we are."
"And on top of all that somehow I could be the, what, bait for this plan of theirs?" Alex asked.
Robert nodded, "You could easily fool an obsessed man into believing you are Anna."
"Oh, and he's obsessed, this just keeps getting better." Alex started pacing, "I could really use a drink."
"I think we all could." Anna walked over and picked up a bottle of bourbon. Anna poured them both a drink then they stood quietly sipping them as they tried to make sense of everything that has happened in the last two hours.
Robert was now pacing on the other side of the room. He was raking his brain, trying to think of everything he knew about Anna. What was missing? What all did he know about her sister? Lindsey had died when they were young, she was an older sister. Anna had never said they looked almost the same. Who was this Dr. Devane? Why isn't she asking more questions about Anna and where she came from? What does she know? "Alex, what do you think you know? I get the feeling you might remember something but aren't sure if it's right or true. You're confused by something, I've seen that same look on my face, so."
"Aren't I the one that should be saying things like that?" she asked with a nervous laugh. Alex couldn't help it, there was something about this, all of this even him, that rang true. This is something she knows about, but how? Anna Devane, she knew that name, of course, she did. "I don't know what it is but I know I have heard about Anna. I feel like I should actually know a lot about Anna." Alex pointed at him and he stopped pacing. "Robert Scorpio, even that name seems to make sense that I would know it but I can't tell you why."
"Are you saying you can't remember?" Anna asked.
"I must be." Alex didn't really know what else it could be.
"I hate to ask this, but have you had any cosmetic work done? I mean have you always looked like you do?" Robert needed to know as much about this as he could, they all needed to understand what was happening.
"I'll try not to be offended by that. No, I have not had anything changed, no surgeries. I have always looked like this."
"He had to ask," Anna said, "We are all just trying to figure out what's going on. I mean if we're long-lost twins how did we get separated? If we aren't did someone do this on purpose? If not what are the chances you are the woman they found to use. Hell, that's the plan no matter why we look like twins the WSB is endangering you."
"I know. So what do we do? If we're in danger what do we do? Am I in danger or is that only you two?" Alex knew she should stay calm but that was getting a lot harder now.
"You would be in danger. Faison is a dangerous man and will not like being tricked."
"Faison, I know that name. Um, you aren't going to like hearing this but I do have blank spots in my memory. I was in a car accident the summer I graduated high school. I suffered a head injury and my struggles to recover have been part of what drew me to Dr. Fulford's study."
"You're right, I don't like hearing that. It just means it's a little harder to figure out a few things but there's nothing we can do about it." Robert was not going to be angry about that kind of thing. She is also suffering the effects of a head injury. "How do you know Faison?"
"Oh, I don't know him. I know that he's dead but my mother had talked about him when telling me about her past. I can't really tell you anything about that. I just know I've heard that name."
"Alright, well to start, he's not dead. He came back from the dead to ruin my life and to try taking over the world. He took me prisoner, Robert came after me and that's how we were all in the right place to have been 'killed.' I was rescued, Robert was injured and Faison escaped."
"Now the WSB wants to find him and bring him in." Alex was trying to follow everything they had been telling her all afternoon.
"You know about the WSB?" Robert asked.
"Enough to know what it is and that I don't want to know more, yeah. You've also mentioned it. I also know enough to understand that if Faison is alive and looking for you none of us are safe."
"I'm glad we don't have to convince you we are dealing with a dangerous man," Anna told her.
"No, but I would like you to explain why I am being used as bait."
Robert and Anna shared a look. "We don't have all that information. We can't really tell you how we know what we do either. And I wouldn't blame you if you think we're both crazy. I was being held prisoner by the WSB after they rescued me so they could lure Faison out of hiding. Apparently, there are pictures of a look-alike that are convincing enough that they are confident it will fool Faison. Look at us, you are convincing enough to fool him. It was fairly easy for us to get here from where I found Robert. So it makes sense that they would also lure Faison somewhere that he could easily get unnoticed from wherever he might be hiding." Anna paused, "I know this is a lot to believe but it's what we are dealing with."
"Alright. I think I believe you, believe what you're telling me. I also think I need time to think about all of this because I honestly don't know what to think." Alex looked from Anna to Robert. It was odd but she felt some comfort seeing such confusion on their faces as well.
"Take a little time," Anna said then stepped a little closer to Robert. "How are you doing? This was not what you were expecting to do today." She rubbed his upper arm as he turned towards her more.
"I haven't thought about any of that." He looked over at Alex, "I don't know what I want to do yet but can I contact you at the hospital to set up another appointment? I just don't want to have to worry about that. I believe we have more pressing matters to figure out at the moment."
Alex looked up, "Oh, yeah. I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem." She had completely forgotten that was how they had all met. She is supposed to be helping him. Alex had gotten caught up in her own thoughts again. There is something telling her she should know a few things that would help them figure this situation out. "Do you mind if I leave? I am very confused by all of this and really want some time to think. I need to try and get my head straight."
"That's fine. We know how to find you if we need to," Anna told her as they both started walking toward the door.
"Yes, call the hospital if you need. I guess I can find you here. I should be going." Anna opened the door and Alex left. She slowly closed the door after her, then turned to see Robert already pulling clothing out of the drawers. "What are you doing?"
"We can't stay here. Yes, we needed to tell her the truth about who we are but we can't risk her telling someone about us and how to find us."
"You're right. That phone call earlier could have been Sean checking in. They'll know something's up when we change hotels."
"They need to know. I really think she is who the WSB found to lure Faison out of hiding. That woman could be your twin."
Anna's eyes got bigger, "I don't even want to think about that right now. Separated at birth is more than I want to deal with at the moment."
Robert walked over and wrapped his arms around her. "I can't even imagine what that must feel like. We can try to figure that out but you're right it should wait until later."
"I'm holding you to that. I'm more concerned with getting home and getting you the help you need."
"I can't go back there. I am not going to risk being seen and leading Faison or one of his goons back to you."
Anna leaned back in his arms and looked up at him, "Are you sure? You still need help."
"I might need help to regain my memory but I'm not getting worse any longer. I had the procedure I needed, it worked now it's a matter of time. So if I have to wait a little longer but it keeps you safe then that's what we're doing. I remember the important stuff."
"Robert, I understand but will you think about this a little more before making up your mind?"
"I guess I can do that." He leaned in and kissed her nose. "We do need to pack though. On the off chance, she is calling in someone as we speak we should be gone before they can get here."
"You're right. Steve and Roxie can't stay here any longer." Anna turned and stepped around the bed. They both started gathering their belongs. The faster they were out of here the better. Twenty minutes later they were checked out and in a cab. They would find another hotel later that evening but no one would be locating them today.
…
A/N: I'm kind of using what AMC did. Alex doesn't remember what all her Aunt Charlotte had done to her at this point or the things she had to do. I hope people are still reading and enjoying this. Still more to come.
