Chapter 22

Anna woke with a smile on her face, "Why are you watching me sleep?" she asked sleepily as she stretched a little seeing Robert smiling at her. She knew he had been even before opening her eyes.

"Because you captivate me." With one hand propping up his head, Robert reached out and stroked her cheek. "I guess we have to figure out what we do now."

"Yeah, I guess we do. I don't know if we should leave Halifax but I don't really feel comfortable staying here either."

"Do we just forget that there is someone here that could pass for your twin? I have no idea if she's part of whatever the WSB is planning or not. I just know it doesn't sit well with me," Robert admitted.

"No, I don't know what to think about that either. Right now, I don't care what our personal connection to each other is. That can wait, we can figure all that out later." Anna let out a sigh and shook her head a little. "I do not like not knowing if we are in the same city the WSB is trying to lure Faison to."

"I don't like that either. I was thinking Lyle and Beth could maybe find someplace to stay over in Dartmouth," Robert suggested. "It's not that far. If we decide we want to talk to Alex more we are still close enough to arrange that."

"I think that might be a good idea. Also, we will be registered guests somewhere again rather quickly. Sean and Mac must be losing their minds wondering what happened and where we got to." Anna couldn't help grinning, she knows this is stressing Sean out but it was kind of funny too. On their first honeymoon, no one knew where there were. Again Sean will know their whereabouts when they are ready for him too, she couldn't help the little grin playing on her lips.

"You're probably right. I bet we will hear from them sometime this evening. They are probably running our alias every couple of hours," Robert said with a bit of a laugh. He loved seeing that cute little grin of hers.

"So we have a plan of action?" Robert nodded in response. "I don't know about you but I am starving and I can smell the breakfast they're cooking."

"Yeah, I'm starving too and you're right, that smells really good." Robert leaned in and gave her a quick kiss. "Let's go eat then we'll shower before taking that ferry ride again."

Anna grinned as she started to get up, "Alright."

There wasn't the amazing view they had before or a tub big enough for two but it was a cute room that had a nice warm inviting feeling. They were now staying in a business class hotel. For the time being, it suited their need perfectly. There was too much they didn't know about all the things that seem to be happening. They could just lay low here, mostly go unnoticed and figure out what they do next. Touch base with the team in Port Charles find out if they know anything new and figure out where they go from here. Robert and Anna both know it wouldn't be long before they would be hearing from Sean and maybe Mac as well.

They had eaten dinner before checking in and after they had settled in, Anna decided she wanted to take a shower. She was towelling off her hair, wrapped in a robe when she walked back into the room. Robert was stretched out on the bed, and it looked like he may have dozed off. She smiled over at him, if she has to stay in hiding, Robert Scorpio is definitely the one she wants to do it with.

Anna tilted her head back as she let out a sigh. All of this is crazy. This entire year has been! How many more challenges can the universe throw at them? Anna wandered around the room, she couldn't sit still, she knew until they had heard from Sean there would be no relaxation for her.

"Didn't you pick up a couple of books? Maybe reading could distract you," Robert suggested from the bed.

"I wouldn't be able to focus on one to get interested, hon." Anna turned back to him and grinned seeing him watching her through half-closed eyes. "I thought you were sleeping."

"I might have been for a bit." He propped himself up on his elbow and watched Anna, she was still fidgeting but so far hadn't started pacing. "I know you haven't wanted to talk about this but I think we need to."

Anna sighed and ran her fingers through her hair, "Yeah." Anna turned to pour them both a drink.

Robert knew he would have to put the question out there. Anna is not going to be the one to get this ball rolling. "Who do you think Alexandra Devane is to you?" Anna took her time with their drinks, when she put the lid back on the bottle, her shoulders slumped forward. She was mostly facing away from Robert. He knew he had to get her to tell him what she is thinking. "Please, we need to figure out what her connection to all of this is."

"I know." Finally, Anna picked up the two glasses and walked over to join Robert on the bed. "Is it crazy to feel like this is another secret from my past but it's about me and my twin? Robert, could she really be my twin sister?" They have the same birth date, it's like looking in a mirror when she looks at Alex. What other explanation could there be?

Robert sat up more and took the offered drink, "That does seem like what the little bit we do know is pointing to."

"How is this possible? Why was this not something I knew? Who knows about this? Or how did it happen if that is what happened? Someone took one of us. Then whose mother is the real mother, mine or hers? Oh god Robert, this is terrible." Anna ran her hand through her hair in frustration.

"Yeah, I hadn't thought of most of that. I was wondering if someone would use your family against you," Robert said as he put his hand on her knee. "Not what this means about your family's history."

"If that someone is Faison, we both know the answer to that." There was nothing off-limits when it came to Faison. There didn't seem to be any limit to what he would do to get what he wanted.

"Yeah. What about the bait theory? Does the WSB know who she is?"

"I don't think she is part of any plan but that doesn't mean she isn't being used for their plan," Anna speculated.

"Alex could be the Patsy in this." Robert knew the lengths people would go to, to get what they wanted. It had been two days since they had met Dr. Alexandra Devane and Anna still couldn't comprehend all that was happening. A trap with a look-a-like is one thing. Meeting someone that possibly could be, not only a sister but a twin sister and she just happens to be assigned to Robert's case, that's a lot to accept. It's one hell of a coincidence if all this is on the up and up.

"She could be. That means we managed to end up right where we should not be." Then another thought hit her, "What if we are the ones walking into the trap?"

"Na, not likely," Robert answered quickly. "The best partner I've ever had got us here all on her own. No one had any idea about our movements let alone influenced them."

Anna smiled, "Yeah, I guess you're right. So she isn't part of a trap for us but Alex could be part of the WSB's plan."

Robert nodded in agreement, "I think we have to assume she is. She's perfect for their plan."

"That doesn't mean she knows she is, right?"

"No, it doesn't," Robert agreed.

"I think we need to talk to her again." Anna looked up at Robert, "If she is my twin, I can't let her get hurt. I have to make sure she understands the danger she could be in."

"I thought you might say that." Robert took her free hand in his, "I don't know if I feel comfortable going back to that study. If this is a trap, I'd be a sitting duck there."

Anna nodded slowly, he had a point. They don't know what they can trust. There is no way to be sure that they are actually safe at the moment or where a safe meeting place would be. "We could try to arrange a meeting. She would want answers. Well, if she isn't a part of this she should want them." Anna sighed and put her head back. She hated not knowing what they can trust. This part shouldn't be hard. This was just supposed to be, getting Robert help while giving the WSB time to put their plan into motion then they go home part.

After a few minutes, Robert's voice pulled Anna out of her thoughts. "Why don't we wait until after we've talked to Sean to decide how we deal with Alex moving forwards?" Robert suggested.

Anna's head was now down, looking at their joined hands, "I think that's a good idea," she said as she slowly stroked his hand with her thumb.

"Hey," Anna looked at him again. "We are going to get through this. Devane and Scorpio are an unbeatable team. This is just another obstacle to overcome."

Anna smile and touched his cheek. "Thank you, I know we will. I have the best possible partner helping me." She leaned in and kissed him tenderly. She could have lost him but didn't. They have found each other again and now she knew there is no stopping them from getting home to their daughter no matter how long it takes. He's right, this is just another stumbling block on their journey home.

The phone rang a few minutes later and Anna got up slowly, "I think we know who this is." She picked up the receiver as she gave Robert a little grin. "Hello."

"Aww, is it good to hear your voice?" Sean had so many questions but right now all he was feeling was relief. "Lyle checked in with Beth, so I take it my old buddy's doing good."

"Yeah, he's right here smiling at me." Robert then got up and stood behind Anna so he could listen as well.

"What happened? Why was there the need to change hotels and locations?" Sean asked.

"Well, I think we need you to do some digging into my family tree, starting around the time I was born."

"Why?" Sean wasn't sure he liked this, what could possibly have happened that involved her family and their need to move and change the names they are using.

"You aren't going to believe this but the doctor assigned to Robert's case could be my twin sister. She is definitely family, Dr. Alexandra Devane. Her mother is an Aunt, whom I don't think I ever meet. I remember her name because she didn't want to take me in as a kid. Alex knew she had a dead uncle, her father's brother, that would be my father. She seems as confused as we are but we also haven't spoken to her since she left our hotel room and we went on the lam."

Sean was astonished, what the hell was going on there? "What happened? How did she end up in your hotel room?"

"That was partly because of me. I couldn't get away from her fast enough when I first saw her," Robert started to explain. He went on and between him and Anna, they explained everything that happened and how they ended up in Dartmouth.

"I am very glad you got out of there. I'm not sure I like this either and yeah, I fully understand why you went off the radar for a couple of days."

"We needed to. I think we are going to try to make contact with Alex but we have to meet her on neutral territory so we have to figure out how to set this up" Robert told him.

"I don't know how I feel about all of this but I will not let an innocent woman be harmed by Faison just because she looks like me. Maybe it's as simple as that. Maybe it's I've stumbled onto some messed-up family secret I was never meant to know about. I don't know."

"Can you let me do a little digging first? At least let me verify her story. It shouldn't be that hard to figure out if Charlotte Devane raised a daughter. Knowing that is something at least," Sean offered.

Robert and Anna shared a look, she nodded slightly. Knowing if Alex is who she says she is would help. They need to know if they are getting played or not.

"Yeah. We need you to find that out. It might not be much but it's more than we know now and maybe something else will pop up that could be useful," Robert said as he rubbed Anna's arms slowly. She nodded in agreement, this was a lot for her to process.

"I will call again tomorrow, I think Robin is going to want to talk to you both. We didn't tell her we didn't know where you were for two days, just that you missed the scheduled call."

"Thank you. She doesn't need to worry more than I'm sure she already is," Anna said.

"Robin is holding up pretty well," Sean assured them.

"That's good, Sean. Thanks." Robert wrapped his arms a little tighter around her. He understood how hard this was on Anna.

"I want to start looking into this for you. Get some answers for you two." It was in her voice. Anna needs to get some answers even if she says she doesn't need them right now.

"Alright, we'll talk to you tomorrow," Anna said then she hung up the phone. She turned in Robert's arms and he just held her. Oh if only they were finally on their way home.
