Lisa continued in her motions, going into full panic mode, believing Jack was in the middle of a heart attack. She was trying to get him to stretch out on the ground while tugging at his jacket. Truthfully, she seemed about five seconds ahead of Jack's utterance, and finally, as she almost had his arm out of the sleeve of his jacket, she froze, Jack's words catching up with her.
"Wait, what?" Lisa paused, there on her knees, her hand tugging at Jack's arm to help him with his "heart attack," and suddenly, she stopped, and her eyes widened. She was breathing heavily as she tried to help Jack, her hair a mess now, and Jack smiled softly at her as he wrapped his hand around her wrist.
"What?" Lisa repeated again, dropping back on her knees as she shook her head at Jack. He grunted as he rolled his eyes.
"I said I was trying to ask you to marry me, not having a heart attack."
"Oh," her voice hitched as she brought her hand to her mouth. Lisa's eyes widened even more if that was possible and without warning and possibly without realizing it or at least not planning it, she pulled her hand from Jack's grasp and flung her arms around him. That forward motion took Jack by surprise, he gasped, and because of the force and the surprise, he hadn't braced for that. Lisa knocked him backwards, both of them now on the ground, Lisa falling on top of him.
"Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!" Lisa exclaimed, her movement as much a surprise to her as to Jack. She scrambled to move off him, making sure she hadn't hurt him as he'd been pushed backwards from being on his knees too. Jack grunted as Lisa scrambled to move to his side and then pulled at his arm to sit him up. Now, both were sitting on the ground in the middle of her vineyard.
"Jack, are you okay?" Lisa ran her hand over his arm, looking him over. "Wait, so you're not having a heart attack?" The scene was crazy, ridiculous even, and Lisa was still in a frenzy, her emotions a mess between the thoughts of a heart attack and now this marriage proposal that she hadn't fully grasped.
"Lise," he clasped her hands again, stilling them and looked into her eyes. "I'm fine, no heart attack, but you might break my heart if you don't give me an answer."
Somehow, that snapped Lisa out of her frenzy, and she locked eyes with him and suddenly burst out laughing.
"Oh, good grief, that was so bad Jack, so cheesy."
"Well?" Jack gestured at her but immediately frowned, "Great, so now this is cheesy."
"Ahh, wait," Lisa paused, some of this reality finally settling in. "You want to marry me?"
"I did before you went all crazy on me and threw me down here in your vineyard."
"Oh, gosh, I ruined the moment."
"Well, I was a mess, all in knots trying to ask you. Suppose that's why this should be left for those much younger. You still haven't given me an answer, and I guess before you do, I'm fine. No heart attack, just physically attacked by this crazy Canadian woman here in France."
Lisa dropped her head as she groaned. She put her hand up to her face and sighed. Jack gently put his hand on her chin and gestured for her to lift her head so he could look her in the eye.
"You know, I'm definitely not getting any younger. I might say you won't find a better offer, but honestly, you certainly could, at least someone younger." Lisa burst out laughing and smiled at him, tilting her head.
"Sorry," she said with a long sigh. "I can believe how sideways that all just went."
"So?" Jack raised an eyebrow at her with a hopeful upturn in his voice.
"So, yes," she grinned but not before she smacked at his shoulder, "I'd love to marry you."
Jack's face beamed, and he put his hands on her face and pulled her toward him to kiss her.
"You won't regret it," he told her, and Lisa started laughing again.
"Well, that's not what I was thinking. That thought never crossed my mind," she laughed, kissing him again.
"Oh, I didn't show you the ring."
"You have a ring?" Lisa's eyes widened, and her facial expression reflected the same shock.
Jack scoffed as he dug around in his pocket, trying to smooth down his coat now that Lisa had pushed him all over the place. "Course I do. I'd be an idiot not to."
Lisa laughed again, her laugh infectious that it had Jack laughing too. She put her hand on his shoulder to almost still herself from laughter.
"I'm just surprised you have a ring with you. I mean," she paused and then met his gaze, "oh, you really planned this, now, here? Oh, Jack, I ruined your proposal," she said, putting her hands over her face, her shocked expression taking over her face. Jack finally fumbled around enough in his pocket to find the ring box. He presented the box, and Lisa pulled her hands from her face.
"You really do have a ring," she smiled.
"You did say yes before seeing it, so I guess this is your last chance to back out."
"Oh," she smirked, "it definitely depends on how this ring looks." She hooked her hand over her shoulder, "I might just hike it back to the house and leave you here with your heart attack," she again smirked, and Jack chuckled, opening the box.
"That probably would give me a heart attack," he said with a gentle smile as he took a deep breath. He looked at her, locked eyes with her, and he then gestured with his free hand, "Before I was interrupted and accosted," he chuckled at her, "I was trying to tell you that you've taken me completely by surprise. I thought my life was over, to be honest. I didn't realize how lonely I was or just how each day seemed to run into the next. Lisa, you have made me very happy, and I love you very much. I can't believe how much I want to get married to you because I never expected that to happen or to have these feelings. I love you," he said, taking her hand in his free hand. "So," he nodded to the box, which he had in his hand still, "if you are okay with this ring," he winked while she chuckled, "I'd love to marry you."
Lisa looked at him, at the ring, and then, she bit her lip. Jack continued, probably out of nervous habit.
"This was my grandmother's ring. I had it reset and all cleaned up, and I hope you like it."
She almost gasped, her expression at least was one that looked like that as she shook her head at it, "This was your grandmother's ring? It's beautiful. Oh, Jack, it's lovely, she smiled brightly. "I love it, and I love that it has been in your family."
He pulled it out of the box as he rolled his head, "Well, good, glad that you like it. I was mildly concerned,' he tossed his head slightly from side to side, "you wouldn't like it-"
She put her hand on his and nodded, "I love it." Jack gestured to her, and she put her hand out so he could put the ring on. She grinned when he did and followed up, "Oh, and I love you too." She started laughing again, as did Jack, and Lisa threw her arms around his shoulders and kissed him, their kiss intensifying as Jack wrapped his arms around her too.
"You really want to marry me?" Lisa's eyes sparkled, but she locked eyes with him, wanting that confirmation. Jack gave her a dumfounded look.
"Well, yeah, why wouldn't I? I should be asking you that question-you really want to marry me? I'm old," he grumbled, "really old, and you could have your pick of any guy."
"I picked you for a reason," she said, resting her arms around his shoulders as she lazily rested them there, smiling at him. She then smirked at him, "Because you're old." Jack started to chuckle too, dropping his head, and when he looked up, Lisa smiled warmly at him. "For whatever reason," she gave him a nod, "we work so well together, better than I could have ever imagined, and yes, I'm so happy to marry you. It's exactly where I want to be."
Jack gestured to the ground because they were both still on it, "I'll tell you where I don't want to be, right here on the ground. Can we at least get up, maybe head inside?"
Lisa covered her mouth, laughing, but nodded. She stood first and then helped Jack, who groaned his way upright. Once he was standing, he reached for her hand, and she gladly put hers in his. Lisa leaned up against his arm and wrapped her other arm around his as they started the walk back to the house.
"You're sure you're okay, I mean, after I accosted you?" Lisa chuckled, looking up at Jack.
"Just hurt my pride," he replied in a very matter-of-fact way, looking down and winking at her, which had Lisa chuckle again.
"I am sorry I messed things up, but-"
"I looked like a mess. Yeah, I know," he glanced at her again with a shake of his head. "You had me a mess, but I'm much better now."
"I can't believe this! We're getting married," she smiled brightly, squeezing his arm. He nodded at her.
"We are. I about can't believe it either, whatever you want to do-"
"Oh!" She smacked his arm, "We have to call Marion. Oh, she'll be so excited, I mean, right?" Lisa glanced at Jack, and he nodded with a smile, not wanting to tell Lisa he'd spoken to Marion about this. Lisa was just so thrilled, so he just nodded.
"You might catch her in the house, mid-morning there," he explained. "She usually is in for a couple hours doing laundry and all that."
"Let's call her," Lisa tugged on Jack's arm.
"As I said, whatever you want. I'm just here, trying not to have some heart attack apparently." The two laughed for the rest of the walk back to the house, Lisa moving quickly once inside toward her computer. She gestured for Jack to join her and pulled up another seat so they could video chat with Marion. Jack was still moving slowly from their walk and whatever it was outside, the proposal mishap. At least the proposal had ended favorably even if getting through it had been rather interesting. Jack walked toward Lisa's desk with a glass of water in hand, it necessary after the mess outside.
Jack sat down next to Lisa in the chair she'd pulled over, groaning as he sat. He started to readjust the chair, looking at it when he heard his daughter's voice through the computer.
"Lisa, hi!" Marion said to her. Jack then looked at Lisa, and he started to chuckle when she didn't say anything but flashed her hand in the air, showing off her new ring. "Oh my goodness! He did it! Yay! I'm so happy for you both!" Right away, the women started squealing at each other, and Jack just crossed his arms and watched it, chuckling as he did. As quickly as they had started squealing at each other, Lisa's demeanor changed.
Lisa turned to Jack with a horrified look on her face as she smacked at him, "You didn't tell me you'd told her!"
"Well, no," he said sheepishly, gesturing at Lisa. "I mean, I told my daughter. You wanted to tell your friend. You were so excited to tell Marion. I didn't want to ruin that for you, but, yes," he waved at the screen, "I told her what I was planning."
"Hello, very excited daughter and friend here," and with that Lisa and Jack both turned their heads back to the screen and saw Marion waving her hands in the air. "Ahh, that's better, I have your attention. So," she clapped her hands together, "you obviously said yes. I'm thrilled but tell me how the old man proposed."
Lisa grimaced, and Jack groaned, both shaking their heads without realizing it. Marion caught onto that quickly.
"Okay, what is that? You are both groaning. What happened?"
"Let's just say that I thought Jack was having a heart attack, not proposing," Lisa started to laugh as she grimaced at Marion.
"The whole down on one knee thing should be banned for men my age, but most men my age aren't getting married again," Jack nodded with a smirk at Marion.
"No," Marion put her hand to her mouth but then burst out laughing. "Oh, this is too funny. Please tell me you didn't have to finish your proposal from the emergency room or something, Dad?"
He waved his hand at Lisa, "She has the ring, and no, we managed to stay on the property."
"I felt terrible I ruined his proposal," Lisa admitted, rolling her eyes. "I'm so happy though, really," she grinned at Marion and reached over to grip Jack's hand. He patted it and sat back in his chair, still holding her hand but allowing the women in his life to chat.
"So? What's the plan? Lisa, I'm thrilled for you. Ahh! Welcome to the family. Gosh this is going to be so much fun, the two of us ganging up against Dad."
Lisa frowned at Jack, almost giving him the sad puppy dog eyes as she reached over to pat his cheek, "We won't gang up on you," she said and then added with a sly grin, "too much."
"Can I get that in writing?" Jack smirked at both of them.
"Let's talk wedding," Marion said. "What do you want? When? Where?"
"I really don't know, and even more, I'm not sure it matters. I just really love your dad," she told Marion. "I really do."
"Yeah, yeah, know that," Marion rolled her eyes and brushed it aside. "Big wedding? Small?"
"Oh, definitely small," she nodded. "I had the big wedding once. Simple, very simple. Nothing grand. I really don't have a lot of things I do want with it, just to be married. Plus," she grinned as she hooked her hand over toward Jack and smiled at Marion, "could you see him in a big wedding? No. Oh, and," she turned to him, "we're not driving off in your old truck. Sorry, glad you love it, but that's not happening." Marion burst out laughing, nodding in agreement, and Jack just rolled his eyes again and waved them off as he continued to sit and listen.
"Dress? Oh, you'll be gorgeous in anything you wear. You should find something there! Lisa, yes, do that."
"Do I need to be part of this?" Jack teased, leaning in slightly as he glanced at both women.
"Dad," Marion waved at him, "this doesn't concern you, none of this at least."
"Right," he nodded at her, "I'm just-"
"Showing up when you're told," Marion smirked again. "I'm proud of you, though, Dad, for actually going through with this. What? Was the ringing burning a hole? Couldn't stand it?"
"I was sick to my stomach thinking about the right time and place," he admitted, lifting Lisa's hand to squeeze it there at his side. "While I was certain of the answer, I still had to get through the asking," he winked at Lisa. She chuckled and leaned over, putting her arm around his shoulder. She looked to Marion.
"I really did make a fool of myself. I was certain he was having a heart attack and didn't even hear him ask me."
"Kind of had to yell it at her to snap her out of her thoughts of a heart attack," Jack admitted.
"The important thing is over," Marion waved. "Let's get back to the details." At that, Jack looked over at Lisa and saw her just beaming there looking at Marion on the screen. He stood and gestured.
"I'm going to let you ladies talk. Marion," he leaned in to have his face on the screen, "everything okay there?"
"Running smoothly, Dad. Ahh, don't have a heart attack," she smirked.
"I already proposed," he smirked back.
She flashed a fake smile at him, "Just be careful in any other activities, you know." Jack's face flushed, and he stepped back and away from the computer. He saw Lisa drop her head but as he turned, she was chuckling and speaking to Marion again.
"You're terrible."
"Ehh, I have to poke fun at it or it's really awkward and weird to think about even with my dear friend. You know I'm right. How many stories are out there with the old guy having a heart attack because he's well, you know, too excited," she waved her hand at Lisa. "So, let's talk wedding."
It was another half hour later when Lisa joined Jack on the porch. She brought a glass of wine for each of them, Jack smiling up at her as she stepped onto it again, this scene not too different from just a couple hours ago now. Lisa even gestured to Jack to sit with him, again sitting across his lap and looping her arm around his neck.
"Hi," she grinned at him and leaned in to kiss him sweetly. He put his hand on her hip and pulled her into the kiss, the two separating and just grinning at one another. They finally nodding to their glasses and toasted each other with them.
"Glad you could talk to Marion."
"You didn't have to leave," Lisa frowned slightly. "I know she was teasing us-"
"No, no, I'm used to that," he chuckled lightly. "I just knew you would enjoy talking wedding things with her. She might be all tough working on a ranch, but she loves things like weddings and all. She's a romantic at her core."
"Hmm, yes, she is, but," she leaned in and rested her head against Jack's, "so is her dad. You portray this tough cowboy exterior, but you are very romantic and loving at your core."
He made a face, "I don't know about that."
"Yes, but I do," she nodded. "I'm the one who gets to see that side of you, and when people wonder what in the world we see in each other or how we," she paused trying to find the right word, "fit, I know what a wonderfully sweet," she leaned in and lowered her voice, "romantic man you are."
He grumbled, teasing her, "Well, that doesn't need to get out." Lisa laughed at that and squeezed his shoulder. She snuggled up to him there and let out a long sigh. "So, did you two plan out the entire wedding?"
Lisa laughed but didn't change her position there, resting her head against the side of his, "Hmm, well, not completely."
"Well, tell me then, when are we getting married? I assume the two of you already came up with the perfect date."
"I don't know, and I did want to include you in that," she laughed. "I don't care, though, as long as it's soon. Can't have someone else snatch you up, ehh," Lisa added as she patted his chest.
"I should be the one saying that," he grumbled. "You sure you want to marry an old, broken cowboy?"
"Hmm," she smiled into his chest there as she squeezed him tighter, "very. I didn't realize how much I loved a good, handsome cowboy until I found me a good one," she laughed at the choice of words. Jack kissed her head. "I'm serious, though," she sat up to look him in the eye, "I don't want anything big, and I just want to be married. I love you so much."
"Me too," he said, pecking her lips. "What did you and Marion talk about then?"
"Just girl stuff," she teased, grinning at him. "How we are going to hit you from every angle now that you're marrying me, the two of us a force to be reckoned with."
"Isn't that the truth," he mumbled with a low chuckle. "You assume I don't know how to deal with that."
"Well, it's awfully hard for you to say no to me," she said, teasing him as she batted her eyes. "And, if it's not something I need, Marion knows you pretty well too." She started to laugh again, patting his chest, "Poor Jack, you won't know what hit you."
"Maybe I should take that ring back," he grumbled again, winking at her before he leaned toward her to kiss her again.
"It's mine," she yanked her hand back in jest. "And, I love it. Thank you," she told him sweetly with a single nod of her head.
"I'm glad you do."
Lisa shook her head, "Ahh, Marion and I just talked about that, a small wedding, but really, I don't know if I have a lot of preferences, which is so un-me," she shook her head as she grinned at Jack. "Usually, I'm the total planner but that seems to be reserved for everyone else. For me, I just want things done."
Jack hooked his hand and looked like he was about to stand up, "Well, we can certainly just take care of things. Let's go to the courthouse. Wait, do they even do that in France?"
"I've never gotten married in France," she teased, "so I wouldn't know. Besides," she nudged at him, "you wouldn't want to do that without Marion and the girls. I don't either." Jack's stomach growled, and with glances at each other, both started to laugh. He nodded at her.
"Guess we should find something to eat. Didn't you get that chicken yesterday?"
"Hmm, yes, I did."
"I can throw it on your grill if you want."
"Sounds great, and maybe we can talk more over dinner. I can put on some rice and make up a salad. We have that bread too."
"Oh, the French and their bread. Yes, I know. Sounds like a plan," he patted her side, and Lisa shifted to stand up. Before she stepped away, she leaned over Jack's chair, just inches from his face.
"I'll marry you anytime, anywhere, as long as you're happy. I really don't care. I'd marry you in this," she gestured and then laughed. "Okay, maybe without the dirt stains from our little mess in the vineyard, but I'm serious. I'm so happy, Jack," and with that, she kissed him and grinned before stepping away.
Jack started to stand too, ready to help her with dinner, but as he did, he paused. What was the point of waiting until they got back home? He didn't care where they got married; he really didn't, and she loved it here. As long as he could understand the guy marrying them, he really didn't care. Yes, she was right-Marion and the girls should be included, but perhaps that was something he could fix. Maybe he could surprise Lisa with that. The more he thought about it, yes, it was a much better solution than having a wedding back in Hudson. He didn't want the likes of Val Stanton and everyone else there, snickering at their ages and anything else. Sure, people would be happy for them, but he knew that even now, after dating for months, they certainly caught the eye of people in town. No, this did seem like a good idea. He would get in touch with Marion and see if he could set up this little surprise, well, not little, but a big surprise. Lisa would love it. She didn't ask for much, just for him to come and see her favorite place, and yes, now as he thought it over, she would be so happy if she could get married in that same place.
He had a call to make, or rather, a video chat. Lisa would probably take a hot shower after dinner; that was something she enjoyed in the evening. It would be lunchtime at home or just after, and yes, Jack would get things rolling along. He'd give his bride the world to make her happy.
