Lorelai waited in the doctor's exam room, she had a full check up and had just finished redressing when the doctor knocked and entered.
"Well, I'm happy to report that you are in excellent health. You're a medical marvel considering the amount of coffee and fast food you claim to eat."
"Then why have I been feeling, -"
"Lorelai, you're pregnant." Dr. Sanders said.
"What?" Lorelai felt herself go into shock. Her body temperature dropped, her vision blurred, she could no longer hear what the doctor was saying and she fell into the chair beside her.
Dr. Sanders rushed to her side and placed her hand on Lorelai's shoulder to ensure she didn't fall out of the chair. "Well that answers the question of if this was a planned pregnancy. Lorelai, just focus on my voice and take deep breaths. Come on, in and out, yes that's good. And again, good."
Lorelai was beginning to regain focus and was so embarrassed.
"Oh Doc, I'm so sorry."
Dr. Sanders stood from her crouched position and went to her desk, "That's okay. An unplanned pregnancy can be quite a shock. It is a life changing situation." She handed Lorelai a granola bar, "Here eat this. It will help. I'm writing you a prescription for some prenatal vitamins and we'll schedule your next visit in two weeks to confirm things are progressing as they should. That is if you plan on going through with the pregnancy."
Lorelai nodded, "Yes. I'm far more equipped to have a baby than I was at sixteen. I'm sorry, I missed some of what you said. How far along am I?"
"About six weeks, I'll have a better timeline for you after our next visit and I'll get some more readings from your bloodwork."
Lorelai chewed her granola bar and nodded. "Six weeks, that makes sense."
Lorelai entered her quiet house, carrying bags filled with vitamins and groceries, both that she picked up two towns over to avoid seeing anyone she knew. She needed to tell Luke, but she was afraid. If they got back together, she wanted him to want to be with her, not just to come back because it was the 'right thing'. She thought about telling Rory, but didn't want to put the weight of this on her. So she had called Sookie who was on her way over.
Suddenly the front door opened and her best friend called out, "Lorelai?"
"Kitchen," Lorelai responded and smiled when Sookie entered the room with a container of her famous mac and cheese.
"So tell me, what's so urgent? And why do you have a grocery bag from Feldman's? That's in Simsbury, Taylor will have your head! Are these apples?"
"Sookie!" Lorelai almost screamed to get her best friend to stop ranting and pay attention.
"What?" Sookie turned and looked Lorelai in the eyes.
"I'm pregnant!"
"No, I'm pregnant," Sookie said, obviously very confused.
"Sook," Lorelai held up her sonogram picture.
"OH MY GOD!" Sookie shrieked and jumped into Lorelai's arms. "We're going to have babies at the same time! And they'll grow up and be best friends or maybe they'll get married and we'll finally be family for real!"
"Woah, woah, Sookie, slow down. Before we can plan our kids' futures. I need your help."
"Help with what?"
"Sookie, Luke broke up with me. But now I have to tell him. And you know I want him back, but I don't want him back just because I'm pregnant and 'Mr. Responsible' will want to do the Right Thing. ."
Understanding washed over Sookie's face, "Oh Honey!"
"Yeah."
"Okay, okay, we can figure this out."
"Well I had a thought," Lorelai said as she dug a fork into the bowl of mac and cheese Sookie handed her. "I tell him that I want to meet to talk about something. But before that meeting you go see him and pump him about us. See if he still loves me, see if he," Lorelai stopped talking to try to keep the tears from falling.
"I'm going there now!" Sookie insisted. "You need to know. I get it. That way when you tell him about the baby you know where he stands. You call him and tell him you want to talk after he closes up tonight and I'll go see him now. I'll call you as soon as I'm done."
XoXoXoXoXo
"Sure, do you want me to come there or - Okay, I'll see you here at eight-thirty." Luke said before hanging up the phone.
The bell over the door rang and Sookie approached Luke, "Can we talk in private?" she asked.
"Sure," he said and motioned her towards the storage room. "What's up?"
"I'm not a good liar, so I'm just going to come right out with it," Sookie started. "Lorelai is still in love with you. She's finally at a place where she can fool most people that she's over the break up, but I know she's still miserable. Are you really done with this relationship?"
Luke looked gutted, Sookie's honesty cut right through him, "Sookie, I can't deal with -"
"Do you know that she hasn't talked to her Mom since the vow renewal? Her Dad has come to the Inn twice, but she refuses to speak to her mother. They will never come before you."
Luke shook his head defeatedly, "You know I love her. You have to know that I'm close to sinking my business because I'm so miserable without her. Caesar and Lane had an intervention last week because I'm killing their tips. I hate this place without her breezing in and lighting up the room. I miss everything about her."
"So why haven't you made a move to get her back?" Sookie asked.
"You said she's fooled everyone, well I'm part of everyone. I've seen her around. She looks happy and beautiful, not like someone suffering."
Sookie placed her hand on Luke's arm, "She loves you, she's been a shell of her former self. She can put on a good face, but she's missing you like crazy."
"She called. She wants to come see me tonight. I want her back, I want a life with her. But they got into my head. She deserves so much more than I can offer."
Sookie shook her head, "You offer her unconditional love and support. You offer someone who would move heaven and Earth for her and her daughter, You offer her friendship and happiness. You are her soulmate. That's a hell of a lot if you ask me."
Luke had a few tears on his cheek, "You really believe that?" he asked in barely a whisper.
"I know that!" Sookie hugged Luke, pat him on the back, and slipped out of the storage room giving him a moment to compose himself.
