The next morning, Kim walked into the bullpen, carrying a box of Brooklyn donuts. The room was quiet, with no one else around yet. She set the box down on a nearby desk and started to unpack the donuts, the sweet smell filling the air.
A few moments later, Kevin Atwater and Adam Ruzek walked in, their curiosity piqued by the sight of the box. "Hey, Burgess, what's in the box?" Kevin asked, eyeing the donuts.
Kim smirked, lifting the lid to reveal the assortment of treats. "Just a little something to start the day off right."
Adam's eyes lit up as he reached for a donut. "You know the way to a man's heart, Burgess."
Kevin grabbed one as well, taking a big bite. "These are amazing. Thanks, Kim."
As the rest of the team trickled in, they each grabbed a donut, grateful for the unexpected treat. Kim felt a sense of camaraderie as she watched her colleagues enjoy the donuts.
However, her smile faded when she noticed Hailey Upton and Jay Halstead walking out of the break room together, their voices raised in a heated argument. Kim quickly looked away, not wanting to intrude on their private moment.
Jay's face was tense, and Hailey's eyes flashed with frustration. "I just don't understand why you didn't tell me," Hailey said, her voice strained.
Jay sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I didn't think it was a big deal. Can we talk about this later?"
Hailey shook her head, clearly upset. "Fine. Whatever."
Kim felt a pang of concern for her friends but decided to give them space. She turned back to the donuts, hoping the day would improve from here.
Hank Voight, always observant, noticed the tension between Hailey and Jay. He decided to make a quick adjustment to avoid any further distractions. "Halstead, you're moving to the desk over there," he said, pointing to an empty spot across the room. "Burgess, you'll be sitting with Upton."
Jay and Kim exchanged glances, but neither argued. Jay gathered his things and moved to the new desk, while Kim reluctantly took her place at Hailey's former desk. The atmosphere was tense, and Kim felt a knot of discomfort in her stomach.
As she settled in, Jay walked past her and gently placed a hand on the small of her back. "Hey, it's going to be okay," he said softly, trying to reassure her.
Kim felt a rush of warmth at his touch but quickly moved away, feeling awkward. "Sorry," she mumbled, avoiding his gaze.
Jay gave her a small, understanding smile before returning to his new desk. Kim took a deep breath and tried to focus on her work, but the tension in the room was palpable.
Hailey, noticing Kim's discomfort, gave her a reassuring nod. "We'll get through this," she said quietly.
Kim nodded, grateful for the support. "Thanks, Hailey."
Kim and Hailey were in the car, heading to follow up on a lead. The silence between them was comfortable, but Kim couldn't shake the curiosity that had been nagging at her since the morning.
She glanced over at Hailey, deciding to take a chance. "So, Hailey, what's the deal with you and Jay? Are you two… you know?"
Hailey sighed, her eyes focused on the road ahead. "It's complicated," she said after a moment. "We've been through a lot together, and sometimes it feels like we're more than just partners. But other times, it feels like we're just friends."
Kim nodded, understanding the complexity of relationships in their line of work. "I get it. It's hard to separate personal and professional sometimes."
Hailey gave a small smile. "Yeah, it is. But we try to keep things professional, especially when we're on the job. It's not always easy, though."
Kim leaned back in her seat, feeling a bit more at ease. "Well, for what it's worth, I think you two make a great team. And whatever happens, I'm here if you need to talk."
Hailey glanced over at Kim, her smile widening. "Thanks, Kim. That means a lot."
Kim and Hailey were parked in an unmarked car, keeping a close watch on the warehouse. The rest of the Intelligence Unit was strategically positioned in nearby vehicles, ready to move at a moment's notice. The night was quiet, but the tension was palpable.
Voight's voice crackled over the radio. "All units, this is Voight. We've got movement inside. Stay sharp and be ready to move in on my signal."
Kim adjusted her earpiece and glanced at Hailey. "Looks like things are about to get interesting."
Hailey nodded, her eyes fixed on the warehouse. "Let's hope this lead pays off."
Jay's voice came through the radio next. "Copy that, Sarge. We're in position."
Antonio chimed in, "Same here. Ready when you are."
Kim couldn't help but feel a rush of adrenaline. This was the part of the job she loved—the anticipation, the teamwork, the thrill of the chase.
Voight's voice came through again, calm and authoritative. "Alright, on my count. Three… two… one… move in!"
The team sprang into action, converging on the warehouse from all sides. Kim and Hailey moved quickly and quietly, their weapons drawn. They could hear the shouts and commotion as the suspects inside realized they were surrounded.
As the team moved into the warehouse, chaos erupted. One of the suspects, in a desperate attempt to escape, grabbed a civilian and held a gun to their head. The room fell silent, the tension thick in the air.
"Nobody move!" the suspect shouted, his voice trembling. "I'll shoot!"
Voight, always the leader, stepped forward cautiously. "Alright, let's all stay calm," he said, his voice steady. "We don't want anyone to get hurt."
The rest of the unit spread out, trying to get a clear line of sight without escalating the situation. Kim, noticing the suspect's fear, decided to take a different approach. She stepped forward slowly, her hands raised in a non-threatening manner.
"Hey, it's okay," Kim said softly, her voice calm and soothing. "We don't want anyone to get hurt here. Let's just talk, alright?"
The suspect's eyes darted around, clearly panicked. "Stay back! I mean it!"
Kim nodded, maintaining her calm demeanor. "I understand. You're scared, and you don't want to go to jail. But hurting someone isn't going to help you. Let's figure this out together."
Jay, standing nearby, watched Kim with admiration. She had a way of connecting with people, even in the most stressful situations.
The suspect's grip on the civilian loosened slightly. "I… I don't want to hurt anyone," he admitted, his voice breaking.
Kim took a small step closer. "I know you don't. And you don't have to. Just put the gun down, and we can talk about how to make this right."
The suspect hesitated, then slowly lowered his weapon. The civilian quickly moved away, and the rest of the team moved in to secure the suspect.
Voight gave Kim a nod of approval. "Good work, Burgess."
Kim felt a wave of relief wash over her. She had managed to defuse the situation without anyone getting hurt. As the team began to wrap up the scene, Jay walked over and gave her a reassuring pat on the back.
"You did great, Kim," he said, his voice filled with genuine admiration.
Kim smiled, feeling a sense of accomplishment. "Thanks, Jay. It was a team effort."
The team gathered at Molly's, their favorite bar, to unwind after a long day. The atmosphere was lively, with laughter and chatter filling the air. Kim was at the center of attention, her new role in the Intelligence Unit making her the subject of much curiosity.
Adam Ruzek was particularly enthusiastic, leaning in close and grinning. "So, Burgess, where did you come from? How did we get so lucky to have you on the team?"
Kim laughed, trying to deflect some of the attention. "Just doing my job, Ruzek. Nothing special."
Kevin Atwater joined in, teasingly. "Come on, Adam, give her some space. You're going to scare her off."
Meanwhile, Jay Halstead sat at the end of the bar, his attention focused on his phone. He was unusually quiet, not participating in the banter. The rest of the team noticed, exchanging glances.
"Hey, Jay, you with us?" Antonio Dawson called out.
Jay looked up briefly. "Yeah, just need to make a call. I'll be back in a sec." He stood up and walked out, his expression tense.
Will Halstead, Jay's brother, who had joined them for the evening, smirked. "Make that half an hour," he joked, causing the team to giggle.
Kim, though laughing along with the others, couldn't shake her concern for Jay. She watched him leave, her worry hidden behind a smile.
Outside, Jay tried calling Hailey Upton, but there was no answer.
Hailey was standing on the top of a parking garage, looking out at the Chicago skyline.
Tears filled her eyes as she saw Jay's name flash on her phone. She hesitated for a moment before switching it off, taking one last look at her hometown.
With a heavy heart, Hailey turned away and walked towards her car. She had made her decision. It was time to leave Chicago for good.
