The next morning, Jay Halstead was at the doctor's office, hoping to get the final approval to return to field duty.
The doctor, a seasoned professional, looked over Jay's chart before speaking. "Alright, Jay, I need you to remove your shirt so I can check your reflexes and the healing progress."
Jay complied, wincing slightly as he moved.
The doctor began testing his reflexes, noting each reaction.
Jay winced again as the doctor pressed on a particularly tender spot.
The doctor added the observation to his list. "You can put your shirt back on," he said, his tone professional but kind.
As Jay dressed, the doctor read out the list of injuries Jay had sustained over the years.
"You've had quite a few injuries, Jay. Multiple gunshot wounds, a few broken bones, and some significant muscle damage."
Jay nodded, listening intently.
The doctor continued, "How are you managing your PTSD?"
Jay took a deep breath. "It's a work in progress. I have good days and bad days, but I'm handling it."
The doctor nodded, making a note in the chart. "It's important to stay on top of it. Your physical health is crucial, but so is your mental well-being. I'll clear you for field duty, but I want you to check in regularly with a therapist."
Jay nodded, feeling a mix of relief and determination. "Thanks, Doc. I appreciate it."
Jay left the doctor's office, feeling a mix of relief and concern.
As he walked into the precinct, Kim got up from her desk and approached him. "How did it go?" she asked, her eyes filled with concern.
Jay smirked, trying to lighten the mood. "Got the all-clear. I'm back on field duty."
Kim's face lit up with a smile. "That's great news! I asked Sarge to partner us up again."
Jay raised an eyebrow, teasing her. "So you can keep an eye on me?"
Kim giggled, shaking her head. "No, because we're good together. And I asked."
Jay chuckled, pressing the button for the elevator. "Uh huh."
They both stepped into the elevator, the doors closing behind them.
Kim and Jay were driving around, enjoying the familiar rhythm of patrol.
The morning was quiet, but they both knew that could change in an instant. Suddenly, a call came through about a burglary in progress.
Kim quickly pulled up her radio. "5021 Eddie, responding to a burglary in progress at 1234 West Addison," she said, her voice steady and professional.
Jay, sitting in the passenger seat, grabbed both his and Kim's vests from the backseat. "Here, put this on," he said, handing Kim her vest while she drove.
Kim nodded, keeping her focus on the road. "Thanks, Jay."
As they sped towards the location, the adrenaline kicked in. They were back in action, working together seamlessly as always.
Kim and Jay arrived at the scene, quickly exiting their truck with guns drawn.
The air was filled with the sound of screaming civilians, creating a chaotic atmosphere.
Kim immediately pulled out her radio, trying to calm the crowd. "5021 Eddie, we're on scene. Multiple civilians, need backup and medical assistance," she reported, her voice steady despite the chaos.
Jay's eyes scanned the area, and he noticed a car speeding towards them.
"Watch out!" he shouted, but it was too late.
The car hit a woman, sending her sprawling to the ground.
Jay fired a few shots at the fleeing vehicle, but it sped off before he could get a clear shot.
He rushed over to the injured woman, kneeling beside her. "Ma'am, are you okay? What's your name?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.
The woman, clearly in pain and frightened, hesitated before answering. "It's… it's Sarah," she lied, trying to hide her true identity due to her domestic situation.
Jay nodded, accepting the name without suspicion. "Hang in there, Sarah. Help is on the way."
Kim ran over, her eyes wide with concern. "Is everyone okay?" she asked, looking around at the shaken civilians.
Jay glanced up at her. "We need to get her to a hospital. She was hit pretty hard."
Kim nodded, quickly assessing the situation.
"Alright, let's get her stabilized and wait for the ambulance. Everyone else, stay calm and stay back!" she instructed the crowd, trying to maintain order.
The sound of sirens filled the air as the Intelligence Unit arrived on the scene. Sergeant Hank Voight stepped out of his vehicle, his eyes scanning the chaotic environment. He quickly approached Kim and Jay, who were tending to the injured woman.
"What happened here?" Voight asked, his voice commanding and concerned.
Jay stood up, giving a quick rundown. "We responded to a burglary in progress. When we arrived, a car came speeding through and hit this woman. The driver took off before we could stop them."
Voight nodded, taking in the information. "Any idea who the driver was?"
Kim shook her head. "No, but we need to get this woman to a hospital. She's in bad shape."
Voight turned to one of the other officers. "Get an ambulance here, now!" He then looked back at Jay and Kim. "We'll find out who did this. Let's secure the scene and start gathering statements."
As the team moved into action, Voight knelt beside the injured woman. "Ma'am, we're going to take care of you. Can you tell me anything about the car that hit you?"
The woman, still in shock, shook her head. "I… I didn't see much. It all happened so fast."
Voight gave her a reassuring nod. "That's okay. Just hang in there. Help is on the way."
Kim and Jay exchanged a glance, knowing that the investigation was just beginning.
As the ambulance arrived and paramedics began tending to the injured woman, the rest of the Intelligence Unit gathered around Jay and Kim. There was a mix of relief and curiosity in their expressions.
Vanessa was the first to speak. "Jay, it's good to see you back out here. How are you feeling?"
Jay gave a small smile. "Thanks, Ness. I'm feeling good. Ready to get back to work."
Adam Ruzek clapped Jay on the shoulder. "We missed you, man. It's not the same without you."
Kevin Atwater nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it's great to have you back. We could use your sharp eyes on this one."
Jay chuckled, appreciating the warm welcome. "Thanks, guys. I'm glad to be back. Let's catch this guy."
Kim smiled at the camaraderie, feeling proud of her partner. "Alright, let's get to work. We need to find out who was driving that car."
Voight, who had been listening, stepped forward. "Jay, Kim, you two start canvassing the area. See if anyone saw anything. The rest of you, start gathering statements from the witnesses. We need to piece this together fast."
The team dispersed, each member focused on their task. Jay and Kim headed towards the nearby shops and houses, ready to start their investigation.
As they walked, Jay glanced at Kim. "Thanks for having my back, Kim. It means a lot."
Kim smiled warmly. "Always, Jay. We're a team."
Kim and Jay pulled up to a small flower shop. Jay turned to Kim, "Wait in the car, I'll handle this."
Kim raised an eyebrow, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, sure. I'll just sit here and twiddle my thumbs."
Jay smirked, shaking his head as he got out of the car. "Be right back."
He walked into the shop, the bell above the door chiming softly. As he looked around, he was surprised to see the woman from earlier, "Sarah," behind the counter. "Sarah? What are you doing here?" he asked, puzzled.
The woman looked up, a flicker of recognition in her eyes. "My name's not Sarah. It's Emily," she admitted quietly.
Before Jay could respond, a man emerged from the back room. "Can I help you with something?" he asked, his tone polite but firm.
Jay glanced at Emily, then back at the man. "Yeah, I need some flowers."
The man nodded. "Who are they for?"
Jay hesitated for a moment, his thoughts drifting to Kim. "For my girlfriend."
The man smiled, a hint of pride in his voice. "She'll love roses. They're our best sellers."
Jay nodded, pulling out his wallet. "Roses it is."
As he paid, he noticed a bruise on Emily's arm. His eyes narrowed slightly, but he kept his tone neutral. "Thanks."
The man handed over the bouquet. "She'll love them."
Jay took the flowers and walked back to the car, his mind racing with questions about Emily and her situation. He handed the bouquet to Kim, who looked at him curiously. "Roses, huh? Who's the lucky girl?"
Jay smirked. "Just thought you'd like them."
Kim smiled, taking the flowers. "Thanks, Jay. Now let's get back to work."
As Jay got back into the car, Kim looked up from her phone with a knowing smile.
"While you were gone, I did a little research on our guy," she said, scrolling through her notes. "Turns out, he's got quite the record. Assault, domestic violence, and a few counts of theft."
Jay's eyes widened as he processed the information. "Wait a minute," he said, connecting the dots. "That's the guy in the shop. The one who sold me the roses."
Kim raised an eyebrow, impressed. "Seriously? You sure?"
Jay smirked, leaning back in his seat. "Told you we were good together."
Kim chuckled, shaking her head. "Alright, let's go have a chat with our friend. Maybe we can get some answers."
They both stepped out of the car, ready to confront the man in the flower shop.
As they approached the door, Jay glanced at Kim. "You take the lead. I'll back you up."
Kim nodded, her expression determined. "Let's do this."
Kim walked into the shop with Jay right behind her.
The man behind the counter looked up and smirked. "Cute girlfriend," he commented, nodding towards Kim.
Jay blushed, looking down to hide his embarrassment.
Kim, catching the exchange, couldn't resist a sarcastic remark. "Oh, he's just shy," she said with a playful grin.
She then turned serious, stepping closer to the counter. "We have a few questions for you. Mind if we talk?"
The man's expression shifted slightly, but he maintained his composure. "Sure, what do you need to know?"
Kim pulled out her notepad. "We need to know where you were earlier today around the time of the incident at 1234 West Addison."
The man hesitated for a moment before answering. "I was here, working. Ask anyone."
Jay, still watching closely, noticed the slight tension in the man's posture. "And can anyone vouch for that?" he asked, his tone calm but firm.
The man glanced at Emily, who was nervously arranging flowers behind the counter. "Emily can. She was here with me."
Kim nodded, jotting down the information. "Alright, we'll need to speak with her too. Thanks for your cooperation."
As they turned to leave, Jay couldn't help but glance back at Emily, who gave him a fleeting, worried look. He knew there was more to this story, and they were just getting started.
As Kim and Jay left the shop, Kim leaned in close and whispered, "Did you notice the bruise on Emily's arm?"
Jay nodded, his expression serious. "Yeah, I saw it. There's definitely more going on here than they're letting on."
Kim glanced back at the shop, her mind racing. "We need to dig deeper. If she's in trouble, we have to help her."
Jay agreed, determination in his eyes. "Let's get back to the precinct and run a full background check on both of them. Maybe we can find something that will give us leverage."
Kim nodded, already thinking ahead. "And we should also check if there are any open cases or reports involving domestic violence at their address."
Jay smirked, appreciating Kim's thoroughness. "Told you we were good together."
Kim chuckled, giving him a playful nudge. "Let's go, partner. We've got work to do."
Back at the precinct, Kim and Jay were busy running background checks on the couple from the flower shop.
Jay's eyes widened as he found something significant. "Kim, come take a look at this," he called out.
Kim hurried over to Jay's desk, followed by the rest of the unit. "What did you find?" she asked, leaning over his shoulder.
Jay pointed to the screen. "The husband, Mark Thompson, has a history of domestic violence and assault. He's been arrested multiple times but never convicted."
Kim's eyes narrowed as she processed the information. "That explains a lot. We need to get Emily out of there."
She rushed back to her desk, quickly pulling up more information. "And look at this," she said, her voice urgent. "Emily, whose real name is Emily Carter, has filed multiple restraining orders against him, but they were all dropped."
Jay nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "We need to move fast. Let's get a team together and go back to the shop. We can't let her stay in that environment."
Voight, who had been listening, stepped forward. "Alright, everyone. Gear up. We're heading back to the flower shop. Let's make sure we do this by the book."
The team quickly prepared, ready to take action and ensure Emily's safety.
Back at the precinct, the unit gathered to close the case.
There was a sense of accomplishment in the air, but it was tinged with concern for Emily's future. They had done their part, but they knew the road ahead for her would be challenging.
As they were wrapping up, Sergeant Trudy Platt walked over, her expression serious. "I've got some bad news," she said, her tone heavy.
Everyone turned to look at her, the room falling silent. "Emily just called. She's decided to drop all the charges against Mark."
A collective sigh of frustration and disappointment filled the room.
Jay shook his head, his jaw clenched. "Why would she do that? We had him."
Platt shrugged, her eyes reflecting the harsh reality. "It's not uncommon in cases like this. She's scared, and she probably thinks it's the only way to keep herself safe."
Kim sighed, feeling a mix of anger and sadness. "We did everything we could. But if she won't press charges, there's not much more we can do."
Voight stepped forward, his voice firm but compassionate. "We can't force her to do anything she's not ready for. All we can do is make sure she knows we're here for her if she needs us."
The team nodded, understanding the difficult position Emily was in. They had done their best, and now it was up to her to take the next steps.
As they dispersed, Jay turned to Kim. "We'll keep an eye on her. Make sure she's safe."
Kim nodded, determination in her eyes. "Absolutely. We're not giving up on her."
Kim noticed the darkness in Jay's eyes as he walked out the back way of the precinct.
Sensing something was off, she quickly ran over to him. "Where are you going?" she asked, her voice filled with concern.
Jay didn't hesitate. "I'm going to Emily's house. I can't just leave her like this."
Kim sighed, knowing she couldn't let him go alone.
She threw her bag into the car and climbed into the passenger seat. "You're not going without me."
Jay glanced at her, surprised but grateful. "Kim, you don't have to—"
She cut him off with a sarcastic smile. "You've just been out of the hospital. I'm not letting you do this alone."
Jay couldn't help but chuckle, appreciating her determination. "Alright, partner. Let's go."
They drove in silence for a while, both lost in their thoughts.
Jay's mind was racing with worry for Emily, while Kim was focused on keeping Jay safe and supporting him.
As they approached Emily's house, Jay parked the car and turned to Kim. "Thanks for coming with me."
Kim nodded, her expression serious. "We're in this together, Jay. Let's make sure she's okay."
They got out of the car and approached the house, ready to offer Emily the support she needed.
Kim and Jay sat in their truck, keeping a close watch on Emily's house. The silence was suddenly broken by the sound of smashing glass and shouts from inside. Jay's instincts kicked in, and he immediately got out of the truck.
"Wait!" Kim called after him, quickly following.
Jay knocked on the door, calling out, "Emily, it's Jay and Kim. Are you okay?" When there was no response, they both walked in, their eyes scanning the chaotic scene.
They found Emily on the floor, shaking and covered in blood. Jay knelt beside her, his voice gentle. "Who did this to you?"
Emily, her voice trembling, whispered, "Mark."
Kim's eyes narrowed. "Is he still here?"
Emily nodded, tears streaming down her face. Kim gently helped her to her feet, but before they could move, Mark appeared, blocking their path. "Where are you taking my wife?" he demanded.
Kim's demeanor turned strict. "We're taking her somewhere safe."
Mark grabbed Kim's arm, his grip tight. Jay's protective instincts flared, and he grabbed Mark, throwing him to the ground. He began punching him repeatedly, his anger taking over.
Emily cried out, and Kim quickly shushed her. "He's not hurting your husband, Emily. He's just giving him a few rules."
Emily clung to Kim, seeking comfort. Kim looked at Jay, her voice firm but gentle. "Jay, knock it off. Look at Emily."
Jay paused, realizing what he was doing. He saw the fear in Emily's eyes and the concern in Kim's. He stopped, taking a deep breath to calm himself.
As they reached the safety of the truck, Kim turned to Jay, seeing the turmoil in his eyes.
Without a word, she grabbed him and pulled him into her arms.
Jay, caught off guard, felt the tension in his body start to release. He trembled slightly, the adrenaline and emotions of the situation catching up to him.
Kim held him tightly, offering silent support. She didn't say anything, knowing that sometimes words weren't necessary.
Her presence was enough to let Jay know he wasn't alone.
After a few moments, Jay took a deep breath, feeling a bit more grounded. He pulled back slightly, looking at Kim with gratitude. "Thanks," he whispered.
Kim gave him a small, reassuring smile. "Anytime, partner."
As they settled Emily safely in the back of the truck, Jay turned to Kim, his expression serious. "What are you gonna do with Mark?"
Kim smirked, a determined glint in her eyes.
She pulled up her radio and pressed the button. "5021 Eddie, we have a suspect in custody. Requesting immediate transport and backup at our location."
Jay couldn't help but smile at her efficiency. "You always know what to do."
Kim shrugged, her smirk turning into a genuine smile. "Just doing my job. Let's make sure Emily gets the help she needs."
Later, Kim put her beer down, taking a deep breath before starting the conversation.
"Jay, ever since I met you, I've loved you like you were my best friend," she began, her voice soft but steady. "And it's made me realize it's been a long time since I saw you as just my partner."
Jay laughed softly, a mix of surprise and curiosity in his eyes. "Kim, what are you trying to say?"
Kim looked down for a moment, gathering her thoughts. "When you were in surgery, I didn't know what to think. It made me realize I don't want to be without you. What I'm trying to say is, I love you so much. I'd follow you anywhere, even if it was a dark tunnel."
Jay smirked, his heart swelling with emotion.
He noticed how close Kim was to crying, her vulnerability touching him deeply.
Without thinking, he leaned in and kissed her, pouring all his feelings into that moment.
Kim wrapped her arms around him, returning the kiss with equal passion.
They spent the whole night in the bar, finally together, their connection stronger than ever.
