Another day, another victim to the maze. Kaspar, one of our newer Runners, got stung by a Griever. I thought those damn things were rare to encounter during the day but I guess I was wrong. I sat by the Medjack hut, waiting to hear about his condition (and the earful that Serina, the Medjack Keeper, would give me). As the door opened, I looked towards the ground and braced myself for the inevitable yelling, but instead, all I heard was a soft quiet voice.
"Um...you can...come inside to check on the patient"
I looked to see who it was and found that it was a young girl, probably around 14 in age.
"Oh- uh, ok" I said as I arose and entered the building, still a bit surprised.
"So...who are you?" I asked the girl, she instantly dropped her gaze and cleared her throat.
"I-Im...Eleanor" She responded. She seemed quite meek and acted as if I was going to yell at her, which confused me since Serina has a soft spot for younger Gladers.
I slowly went and sat beside the poor Runner who had been stung.
"He's st-still alive" Eleanor muttered, to which I gave a nod.
"That's good, it would be a shame if he were to die so soon" I said, breathing a sigh of relief.
The mood was...awkward to say the least, I didn't really know why though.
"I'm Grim by the way" I said as I extended a hand for her to shake, which she avoided.
She stayed silent, not responding, and looked out the window as if she was dreaming. I snapped my fingers in an attempt to get her attention, rude I know, but it was the first thing I could think of. She instantly broke from her trance.
"Hey are you ok?" I asked her, feeling a bit concerned. "I can understand if working as a Medjack is stressing you out-"
"No no no no no-" Eleanor interrupted, "I enjoy this work...it's just..." she sighed, "i-it's nothing" she said, putting up a smile.
I frowned, not very amused, but decided not to question her too much about it since this was basically our first meeting in person.
"Well, if you say so. Anyways, I dont see you around the Glade much but I know you've been here for a while, what keeps you so busy?" I questioned, curious.
She obviously seemed excited to answer that since a large grin was instantly plastered across her face.
"Well, when I first arrived in the Glade, a book about basic medicine came along with me, so I spend most of my time reading it and learning how to help more people!" She exclaimed, I could basically feel her joy at being able to talk about this.
I chuckled, at least the mood improved.
We ended up spending quite a while talking with each other, so much so that we lost track of time and ended up talking until the sky began to get dark. I ended up having to leave because I had an early morning the next day, smiling as I waved goodbye to Eleanor and exited the Medjack hut.
However, after exiting, I came across someone who seemed to have been watching the whole ordeal. Another kid who looked like he was 14, and he looked quite upset. It was too dark to get a good look at his whole face though.
"You shouldn't hang around her...you'll end up getting yourself killed" he warned before dissapearing into the darkness...what a weirdo. Anyways, I headed to the Homestead to catch some Zs because tomorrow would probably be another difficult day.
