"Are you ok Baby Dragon?" Ruka asked once the young orange dragon landed among the group.
"ehhhh... If my evolution wasn't utterly tied to the Time Wizard card, I think I would be worried I'd never see my next hatching day..." Baby Dragon lamented as his wings drooped a bit. "I'll be ok, I went to check that western town since Red Eyes was over with Shinzuka. The blast was visible if you're interested."
"That... can't be good... If people are aware of a battle going on here, won't the JDF be activated to come here?" Rua inquired. "Its not like they can do anything but cause problems right? They can't fight, but they 'are' armed and if they just start firing..."
"Realistically I don't see why," Crow replied. "The city is pretty abandoned and the only thing to worry about is Momentum. Sending forces in if Momentum is about to blow would be stupid. Because they would need those soldiers for emergencies in other places. Just need a single fighter jet for a fly over and so long as no one shoots it down..."
It felt realistic only the area was so barren. How 'would' the governments react to just this large sector of the city being concrete sludge?
"For those who don't speak dragon..." Momoe quietly called out.
"Oh Baby Dragon was giving us an idea how far the visible blast light radius was." Aki explained as she began pulling out the spirits associated with the groups. Crow's deck along with the Cyber Harpy Lady with her sisters.
"Yusei you better plant a flower when this is over," Crow teased before he cheerfully gave his spirits their flight commands. While Stardust was seen flying from a bit of a distance, his glow the only reason anyone could see any part of Red Eyes Black Dragon.
A lance of white light erupted out of the darkness spearing the air between the pair of dragons splitting them apart from their flight path.
"If you have to, drag the fathers off the battlefield," Yusei ordered the Sisters before they took off while his gaze was already on this new landscape. Could they drive on it? It was certainly an interesting one, one that looked to be possibly an entertaining and challenging ride! If the landscape was solid and not just gray sludge.
"At least Yubel doesn't multiply themselves, unlike Trueman..." Jack grumbled as his eyes barely caught the faintest spike of black amid the residual glow of the energy lance. As the corrupted light faded natural darkness consumed the image but the reality was still there.
As they talked Baby Dragon, now with his breath caught and ready to move, began waddling himself over to Fubuki. The human was with his friends yet, perhaps a very vivid orange dragon head was hard to ignore.
"You're going to like this! I was happy to get my claws on it..." Baby Dragon boasted only to get this blank look on Fubuki's face. Not to say he looked disinterested, but it wasn't quite on the level of a parent trying to understand their babbling child... "I wish you spoke dragon..." His wings drooped and his head dipped down.
"Baby Dragon found something, he's pretty happy about it too..." Ruka stepped in quickly to translate. Rua was already curious when he noticed the card clutched in Baby Dragon's front paw.
"Oh? What did you find?" Fubuki asked as he dropped to one knee so he could better see the dragon.
It was effective as well, as Baby Dragon gave this broad grin before extending his paw to Fubuki. "This would work great! I saw it on tv while watching it with Shinzuka, its a new release for the Red Eyes Dragon set!"
Fubuki saw the back of the typical dueling card before flipping it over to reveal a formidable purple edged card. A mixture of Dark Magician and Red Eyes' wings with the title 'Red Eyes Dark Dragoon'.
And at the bottom.
"Attack power 3000, Defense 2500? Its comparable to Blue Eyes?!"
"Its because of Jounouchi, given he was killed and was friends with God, the company made this card. Its a bit overpowered, may get nerfed, cash grab but it would serve as a powerful card in the deck. So I was glad to get it before it gets locked up," Baby Dragon confessed.
"How did you get the card though? We're not usually able to get into physical contact with the world..." Cyber Blader asked with a concerned frown, that deepened as the twins who had been translating began listening to the explanation from Baby Dragon.
"He said that the card was mailed to his sister, but she reacted pretty badly to it. She had held out hope for so long that Jounouchi would be found alive that when the card arrived she threw it away. He's been tracking it ever since, when someone picked the card up and it ended up in Crash Town. The energy from the storm was enough to get him to pick the card up and bring it here." Rua explained, but there was enough nuance in how he explained it. Stuff that was being omitted as children were wont to do and well it 'was' a 'Baby' Dragon.
"I'm getting a strong feeling that this was something he 'borrowed' shall we say?" Junko asked with this massive grin on her face.
Fubuki, for his part could only grin and shake his head, "well? Did you get permission to bring it here?"
Baby Dragon wasn't one who manifested often, but with the explanation of the card it made sense. He 'was' here, just busy.. But the dragon was right about the card being a cash grab. Fubuki watched as the dragon's face, while not capable of a great deal of expression 'was' able to pull off a thoughtful one. Right before he casually shook his head 'no'.
Fubuki looked down at the card and there was a small hope he could find in the dark imagery. It was a 'lucky' find in a sense. Reading over all its abilities, this was a card that wasn't going to last in sanctioned competitions before the first tournament after its official release was held.
"This card is amazing, Baby Dragon. Its so overpowered and while my deck is neither a Red Eyes themed deck or a Dark Magician themed, I think I can find ways to make it work. Though not at the moment..." Fubuki confessed.
Then as though the universe decided to help prove Fubuki's point, the sky began to burn with light. It appearance was laser like with its precision, white light that was nothing like Yubel's defiled Light. Cold, sterile, it was the antithesis of Yubels light, cutting into the darkness with surgical precision. An open gaping wound in the night sky that revealed nothing of its own interior, or the sky behind it. From it a bastardization of Stardusts' own light effect began to swiftly pass through as the orbs of multi colored lights shot out into the space above them.
Movement that appeared programmed with its swift movement, snapping into place, these indifferent colors. Blinking into the night air in clear patterns, though what they indicated was anyone's guess.
"Those two don't use tech though..." Zalinka noted with a concerned frown on her face.
"We should probably move, they remind me of the tracking lights when we're working on projects back in the R&D labs." Ryu observed as Superia suddenly began showing the pair back into the tunnel that had been their safe place, even as Yusei made similar observations to his nearest Dragons.
'Perhaps its because of limitations from being human, but I didn't see anything in that space so where did these lights come from?' Yusei mused to himself.
"Those aren't spirits," Aki observed in growing concern.
"Just floating lights? But those two are super into the weird not tech." Crow pointed out as one light flashed hot.
A thin light shot through the air it was more instinct than practical thought that got Yusei to move with only a soft hiss to tell him it missed. A whiff of burnt hair touched his nose as Aki cried out in alarm.
"Here we go again folks!" Crow called out as Jack and he began to triangulate their position with Yusei.
Chaos erupted as the other lasers began blinking into existence piercing the air and impaling the ground. Dragon roars swallowed the free space for sound as they took to the sky with the laser blasts chasing after them instantly. Crow was mortified, partly because if Ancient Fairy was here it would mean Ruka would also be taking on these hits. Also these dragons were born from the souls of his gang of friends. Dragons or not, they were being shot at!
Archfiend was the first to open fire, the jet of flame issued from his mouth as massive as his mouth. It seared the air in such an arch of brilliant gold and orange flame, parted only by these cold sterile white light lasers that stabbed through them. Beyond the lasers more of the same types of 'holes' slipped open in the sky. Parting the way an eye would and producing towering white steel colored robots. They were large and bulky but a faint glimpse at the end of their limbs showed no hands only gaping holes ideal for firing blasts.
"They're immune to my fire?!"
For five people present the outraged roar made them all want to turn and make sure that was Archfiend Dragon. NOT Jack.
For everyone else the roar radiated outrage, a potent fury to go with the wash of hot air that blew back from the flame. Spurring Natasha to try avoiding the flames while under her hooves she could feel the concrete sludge bake.
Horse sense said to haul off and run, with the ground firm she could just gallop away.
Human sense warned against it. The flames were impressive and hot, but to flash fry the ground to something she could confidently race over? Not very likely at the epicenter of the blast and less likely progressively further from him. Saying nothing of the reality that the humans would have to be dead from the heat likely as not.
"That is not something that either Trueman or Yubel has used," Asuka mused in dissatisfaction, "if Trueman is even a Spirit. Regardless neither are tech themed in the slightest."
"You're right..." Ryo agreed in disdain. The lasers weren't going as fast as they could, if they were duel spirits. "Cyber Phoenix those lasers aren't part of a Cyber type spirit right?"
The bird reappeared, though in a faded state before lifting his gaze to study said lasers.
Yusei's ears pricked as he heard Ryo call out to the Cyber Spirits.
"Those aren't spirits, they're both man made lasers and robots, but Archfiends' flame should have destroyed them right? There's no current tech that could withstand that much heat as I remember!"
"Who do you think I am? I'm the Archfiend Dragon! They should have melted..." the dragon answered in searing outrage that not everyone could understand but deafened everyone all the same.
"Blow hard had to make the ground harder to CRACK!" Black Rose was growling, her voice muffled but lower as though she was below them.
Ryo was mostly right, there was no standing technology that afforded flying lasers that appeared to have no central command near by. Since such a thing was considered an lethal advancement of drone technology thus outlawed. Could someone make one? Sure, but open a portal to direct them here and then leave?
No, that kind of advancement was beyond them at this point, though there was always the ability to blend. As for the robots? It was possible to make those, but at such a size? For once 'limitless energy' was proving a problem since there was no one who could be held back from creating such machines. If whoever had someone like Aki who could activate a spell card.
But if that was the case wouldn't they just marshal an army of spirits for themselves as Aki was doing for them? Though the light of the flames produced by Archfiend did help illuminate a few things for Yusei. While he couldn't see the elevated lasers the one closest to him was telling. It had to adjust before firing, so not the whole node was a laser. More importantly it moved quickly into position, but was taking time charging up before it fired, targeting people and the dragons that stepped in the way.
That was the last coherent thought Yusei was able to experience before the robots started to activate.
From there it was a worse chaos than dealing with Yubel and Trueman. The pair were Duel Spirits or at least adjacent, with their brainwashed followers at least they had some grounds for understanding the battlefield.
The robots were massive, easily matching the height of the Momentum project building. Their limbs were just massive hollow pipes that looking into them brought to mind the sky above. They moved with all that steady uniformity of a vacuum. They hovered over them and only the sound of the air being forced to move for them produced any noise. Thus they could see these massive black voids above them, with only a spark far within their depths.
It was just 'there' consuming their whole world.
Natasha was hauling off as fast as her hooves could carry her, the sharp sound of her hooves clapping along the dried ground sounded more like a runners starting pistol. Superia flew across their vision, making a frantic gesture as though she wanted them to leave. Encouraging the spirits to blindly follow Natasha's lead. A flurry of dragons started gathering up Dragons, Cybers were grabbing up anyone they could. Black Luster Soldier gathered up Ryu and Zalinka and began charging off in a frightening bid to get out of the line of sight of those massive pipes.
The sparks were beach balls of crackling light.
The robots were aiming at the group, yet given their sizes that spill over was going to go right towards Momentum.
"It feels wrong, who has that much experience to make something that can produce a shield to protect them while also firing lasers? Unless I'm missing something Yubel's fire is unique, its corrupted, so I would think that dragon fire also has its own unique properties..." Ryo mused to his Cybers as Kazu raced ahead on the back of his Queen.
"Those aren't spirits Yusei, and I don't know what Superia saw to make her react like this..." Aki pointed out.
"Well there's that teeny tiny light that isn't so tiny anymore," Stardust pointed out as he held the pair close to his chest. "Growing slowly and I vividly recalled what happened when Blue Eyes White Dragon decided to have a dragon breath weapon stare down with Yubel." While the dragons understood each other, Superia's mute nature wasn't just a human thing. No one could hear her, yet she was one of Gods royal court. Between her frantic gesturing and Natasha just running there was little recourse but to do the same. Natasha had human smarts but a lot of horse sense and horses weren't predators, they fled danger.
"Blue Eyes and Yubel..." Yusei repeated, his words catching Aki's ear. Catching her curious expression he began to explain. "I've been thinking of 'Corrupted' as superficial, just a description for their Light themed powers. But if I pull back from that, and take it for what it is, corrupted light. Then the conflict it had with Blue Eyes was more than being charged up by a god. Its becomes imperfect light against pure light. In other words, a version of 'matter verses anti-matter'."
The realization made him look at those lights that were beginning to illuminate their tunnels and put a horror in the place of his organs. Kaiba had protected them from a variation of a matter anti-matter explosion. Great for showing how powerful he was, but they were about to see a possible anti-matter canon?
Realistically speaking lasers were pretty but essentially useless. Most of their energy was expended just creating the light end of their presence. But if this was anti-matter, it would explain the slow charge up and the alarm shared by both Natasha and Superia. The group had found safety in the underground before, but now everything was sludge.
Could they compel Kaiba Senior to protect the area once more from a series of Anti-Matter canons?
