Chapter 16: Unearthing Strength

The morning sun had barely begun to peek over the industrial skyline of Oreburgh City when Ethan awoke, his mind still churning with the events of the previous day. The comfortable bed of the Pokémon Center was a stark contrast to their harrowing journey through the cave, and for a moment, Ethan was tempted to burrow back under the covers and pretend the encounter with Team Galactic had never happened.

But as he sat up, stretching out the lingering soreness in his muscles, Ethan knew that wasn't an option. The weight of Saturn's business card, still tucked away in his jacket pocket, served as a constant reminder of the potential dangers that lay ahead.

"You're projecting your anxiety again," Akira's mental voice cut through Ethan's brooding. The Meditite was already awake, seated in his usual meditation pose on the windowsill. "While caution is wise, allowing fear to paralyze you serves no one."

Ethan sighed, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "You're right, of course. It's just... knowing what Team Galactic is capable of, what they might do if left unchecked... it's a lot to process."

Serena, roused by their mental conversation, chirped softly from her makeshift nest on the nightstand. Ethan couldn't help but smile as he reached over to gently pat her shell. "Morning, Serena. Ready for a big day?"

As Ethan went through his morning routine, he found his thoughts drifting to their immediate plans. The Oreburgh Gym loomed large in his mind, both as a challenge and as a welcome distraction from the Team Galactic situation.

A knock at the door jolted Ethan from his musings. "Ethan? You up?" Conway's voice called from the hallway. "I've got some interesting information about the Gym!"

Ethan opened the door to find Conway practically bouncing with excitement, a stack of papers clutched in his hands. "Come on in," Ethan said, unable to suppress a grin at his friend's enthusiasm. "What've you got?"

Conway spread the papers out on the small desk in the corner of the room. "So, I did some research last night," he began, pushing his glasses up his nose. "Roark, the Gym Leader, has only been in charge for about a year. He took over from his father, Byron, who moved to Canalave City to run the Gym there."

Ethan nodded, remembering similar details from the games. "What's Roark's battle style like?"

"That's the interesting part," Conway replied, his eyes gleaming. "He's been shaking things up since taking over. While he still specializes in Rock-types, and there are reports of him using moves like Stealth Rock to control the battlefield, and even some Pokémon with dual-typings that offset traditional Rock-type weaknesses."

As Conway continued to detail Roark's recent battles, Ethan found himself impressed by the depth of information available. It was another reminder of how this world differed from the games he knew – Gym Leaders weren't static challenges, but evolving trainers with their own growth and strategies.

"So," Ethan said, his mind already working on potential counter-strategies, "we should be prepared for more than just straightforward Rock-type moves. Serena's Charm could be useful for lowering attack power, and Akira's new Thunderpunch might catch them off guard..."

They spent the next hour discussing a game plan. Conway, true to form, had prepared several flowcharts detailing possible battle scenarios. Ethan found himself grateful for his friend's meticulous approach, even if some of the more elaborate plans seemed a bit far-fetched.

As they were wrapping up their strategy session, Ethan's stomach let out an audible growl. Conway chuckled, glancing at his watch. "I guess we got a bit carried away. How about we grab some breakfast and then head over to the Gym? They open for challenges at 10."

The Pokémon Center's cafeteria was bustling with trainers when they arrived, the air filled with the aroma of coffee and the chatter of excited voices discussing upcoming battles. As Ethan and Conway found a table, their Pokémon happily digging into specially prepared food, Ethan couldn't help but overhear snippets of conversation from nearby tables.

"Did you hear about the cave-in at Oreburgh Gate yesterday?" one trainer was saying. "They say some rare fossils were uncovered!"

Another voice chimed in, "Yeah, and get this – I heard Team Galactic was seen in the area right after. You think they're involved somehow?"

Ethan tensed at the mention of Team Galactic, but forced himself to remain calm. It wouldn't do to draw attention to himself now.

Conway, oblivious to Ethan's discomfort, leaned in excitedly. "Fascinating! I wonder if they're assisting with the fossil research. Remember that Saturn fellow we met? He mentioned their organization was involved in cutting-edge advances in science."

Ethan nodded noncommittally, taking a large bite of toast to avoid having to respond. He knew he'd have to tell Conway the truth about Team Galactic eventually, but now wasn't the time. They had a Gym battle to focus on.

After breakfast, they made their way through the bustling streets of Oreburgh City towards the Gym. The industrial nature of the city was evident everywhere they looked – smoke stacks rose into the sky, the distant rumble of mining equipment provided a constant background noise, and many of the buildings had a utilitarian, no-nonsense design.

As they approached the Gym, Ethan was struck by its appearance. Unlike the simple building he remembered from the games, this Gym was an impressive structure that seemed to be part museum, part battle arena. The facade was adorned with various fossils and geological specimens, while a large sign proclaimed "Oreburgh City Gym: Where Rock-Solid Battles Are Forged!"

A small crowd had already gathered outside the Gym's entrance, trainers of all ages eagerly waiting for the doors to open. Ethan and Conway joined the line, the excitement in the air palpable.

"Remember," Conway said, adjusting his glasses, "Roark usually starts with his Geodude. If we can take it out quickly, we might be able to throw him off."

Ethan nodded, his hand instinctively moving to the Pokéballs at his belt. Serena and Akira's presence was reassuring, a reminder that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together.

As the Gym doors swung open, a cheer went up from the assembled trainers. A young man in a mining helmet and protective gear stepped out, a friendly grin on his face. "Welcome, trainers!" he called out. "I'm Roark, the Oreburgh Gym Leader. Who's ready for some rock-solid battles?"

The crowd surged forward, but Roark held up a hand. "Whoa there! We've got a system here. Please form an orderly line and take a number. We'll be calling challengers in order throughout the day."

As Ethan and Conway got in line to receive their numbers, Ethan couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. This was it – his first official Gym battle in this new world. Everything he'd learned, all the training they'd done, would be put to the test.

"Number 17," the Gym attendant said, handing Ethan a small slip of paper. "Please wait in the designated area. Your battle will likely be in the early afternoon."

Conway received number 18, much to his delight. "Perfect!" he exclaimed.

As they made their way to the waiting area, Ethan's mind was already racing with potential battle plans. He knew Roark would be a formidable opponent, but he also felt a growing confidence in his team's abilities.

The waiting area was a large, open space with various amenities for trainers preparing for their battles. One section was dedicated to last-minute training, with practice rocks set up for Pokémon to test their moves on. Another area had computer terminals where trainers could access information about Rock-type Pokémon and common battle strategies.

Ethan and Conway found a quiet corner to continue their preparations. As Conway pored over his notes one last time, Ethan decided to have a final chat with his team.

Releasing Serena and Akira from their Pokéballs, Ethan knelt down to their level. "Alright, team," he said softly, "this is our next big test. Roark's Pokémon are going to be tough, but I know we can handle it. Serena, remember to use Protect if things get dicey, and don't be afraid to unleash that Ancient Power. Akira, your Thunderpunch could be our secret weapon – use it when they least expect it."

Serena chirped determinedly, while Akira nodded, a glint of anticipation in his eyes.

"We are ready," Akira's mental voice resonated with confidence. "This Roark may be strong, but he has not faced a team like ours before."

As the morning wore on, Ethan watched other trainers come and go, some emerging victorious with shiny new badges, others leaving with determined looks, vowing to return stronger. Each battle he observed provided new insights into Roark's tactics and the strengths of his Pokémon.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Ethan heard his number called. "Number 17, please proceed to the main arena!"

Conway gave him a thumbs up. "You've got this, Ethan! Remember, stay flexible and trust your instincts!"

As Ethan made his way to the battlefield, he felt a strange sense of calm settle over him. This was what he'd been preparing for, what all their training had been leading up to. Whatever the outcome, he knew they would give it their all.

The main arena was impressive – a large, rocky field surrounded by stadium-style seating. Various boulders and rock formations dotted the battlefield, providing cover and strategic options for both sides. Roark stood at the far end, a Pokéball already in hand.

"Welcome, challenger!" Roark called out, his voice carrying easily across the arena. "I hope you're ready for a battle that will rock your world!"

Ethan couldn't help but cringe internally at the pun. "Ready when you are!"

The referee stepped forward, raising both flags. "This will be a three-on-three battle between Gym Leader Roark and challenger Ethan. Only the challenger may substitute Pokémon. The battle will end when all of one side's Pokémon are unable to continue. Trainers, choose your first Pokémon!"

Ethan felt a momentary pang of concern, realizing he was at a numerical disadvantage with only two Pokémon. But he quickly pushed the thought aside, focusing on the strength and bond he shared with Serena and Akira. They had overcome tougher odds before, and he trusted in their abilities.

Roark smiled, tossing his Pokéball high. "Geodude, let's show them what we're made of!"

As the Rock-type materialized on the field, Ethan made his choice. "Serena, you're up!"

The crowd murmured in surprise at the sight of the small Togepi facing off against Geodude. Ethan could hear whispers of "Is he serious?" and "That little thing doesn't stand a chance!" But he knew better. Serena might be small, but she was far from helpless.

"Battle begin!" the referee called, bringing down both flags.

Roark wasted no time. "Geodude, start with Stealth Rock!"

Geodude slammed its fists into the ground, causing sharp stones to rise and scatter across Ethan's side of the field. Ethan gritted his teeth, knowing any future switches would be costly.

"Serena, use Charm!" Ethan called out.

Serena unleashed a wave of disarming cuteness, causing Geodude to falter slightly. Its attack power noticeably decreased.

Roark nodded approvingly. "Not bad, but it'll take more than that! Geodude, Rock Throw!"

A barrage of rocks hurtled towards Serena. Ethan's heart raced as he called out, "Protect, now!"

The shimmering barrier sprang up just in time, the rocks bouncing harmlessly off. As the shield faded, Ethan saw his opportunity.

"Ancient Power, Serena!"

Serena's eyes glowed as she summoned her newfound power. Rocks from the battlefield rose into the air, swirling with otherworldly energy before launching towards Geodude.

Roark's eyes widened in surprise. "Geodude, Defense Curl!"

Geodude curled into a tight ball, but the Ancient Power struck hard, sending it rolling backward. As it uncurled, Geodude looked significantly worse for wear.

"Impressive!" Roark called out. "But we're not done yet. Geodude, Magnitude!"

The ground began to shake violently. Serena struggled to maintain her balance as fissures opened up across the battlefield.

"Serena, Metronome! Use the terrain to your advantage!" Ethan called out, an idea forming.

Serena chirped in understanding. As the earth continued to tremble, she focused her energy, channeling the seismic activity around her. Suddenly, the ground beneath Geodude erupted in a violent burst of energy – Earth Power!

The super-effective move caught Geodude off guard, the force of the earth itself slamming into it from below. The Rock-type was sent hurtling into the air, crashing into a nearby boulder. When the dust settled, Geodude lay motionless on the ground.

"Geodude is unable to battle!" the referee declared. "This round goes to the challenger!"

The crowd erupted in cheers as Roark recalled Geodude. Ethan felt a surge of pride – they'd won the first round, but he knew the battle was far from over.

Roark smiled, a glint of excitement in his eyes. "Well, well! You're full of surprises, aren't you? But let's see how you handle this – Onix, you're up!"

As the massive Rock Snake Pokémon materialized on the field, Ethan knew they were in for a tough fight. Serena looked tiny in comparison, but her determined chirp reminded Ethan of the strength hidden within her small form.

"Round two, begin!" the referee called.

Roark took the initiative once again. "Onix, Screech!"

The Onix reared back, its mouth opening wide. What emerged was not just sound, but an almost visible wave of sonic energy. The blast of noise and air pressure slammed into Serena like a physical force, causing her to skid backwards. She winced, her body trembling as the overwhelming sound threatened to paralyze her.

Ethan's mind raced, searching for a way out. "Serena, curl up and roll!"

Fighting against the paralyzing effect of the Screech, Serena tucked her body into her shell. Using the smooth, rounded surface, she began to roll, building up speed as she escaped the worst of the sonic assault.

"Now, use the momentum! Scale Onix's body!" Ethan called out.

In a move that surprised everyone, including Roark, Serena uncurled at the base of Onix's tail. Using her small size and the confusion of her unexpected approach, she began to scamper up the Rock Snake's body. Onix thrashed, trying to shake her off, but Serena clung on, determinedly making her way higher and higher.

"Onix, shake it off!" Roark commanded, a note of panic in his voice.

But it was too late. Serena had reached Onix's head, coming face to face with the massive Pokémon. Their eyes locked, and Ethan saw his chance.

"Now, Serena! Charm, full power!"

At point-blank range, Serena unleashed a wave of disarming cuteness unlike anything they'd seen before. The effect was immediate and dramatic. Onix's fierce expression melted away, replaced by a look of confused affection. Its massive body relaxed, the fight draining out of it as its attack power plummeted.

"Clever," Roark commented, clearly impressed. "But raw power isn't everything. Onix, use Rock Polish!"

Onix's body began to gleam as it drastically increased its speed. Ethan's mind raced, trying to formulate a counter-strategy.

"Serena, Ancient Power!"

The glowing rocks launched towards Onix, but with its newfound speed, it easily slithered out of the way.

Roark grinned. "Now, Onix! Rock Slide!"

A cascade of boulders rained down from above. Ethan called for Protect, but Serena was a fraction too slow. The rocks struck hard, sending her tumbling across the battlefield.

"Serena!" Ethan called out, his heart in his throat. To his relief, Serena struggled back to her feet, battered but not beaten.

"Your Togepi has spirit, I'll give you that," Roark said. "But this ends now. Onix, finish it with Iron Tail!"

Onix's tail began to glow with metallic energy as it swung towards Serena. In that split second, Ethan saw their chance.

"Serena, Metronome, now!"

As Onix's tail descended, Serena's fingers glowed. Suddenly, her body was surrounded by a blazing aura of energy – Counter!

The Iron Tail struck, but the force was immediately reflected back at twice the power. Onix roared in pain and surprise as it was sent crashing into the arena wall.

For a moment, the entire Gym was silent. Then, slowly, Onix slumped to the ground, unconscious.

"Onix is unable to battle!" the referee announced, shock evident in his voice. "The challenger wins this round!"

The crowd exploded into cheers, many jumping to their feet in excitement. Ethan could hardly believe it – Serena had taken down two of Roark's Pokémon!

As Roark recalled Onix, a look of genuine respect crossed his face. "I have to hand it to you, Ethan. You and your Togepi are something else. But this last round won't be so easy. Go, Cranidos!"

The Fossil Pokémon appeared on the field, pawing at the ground aggressively.

"Final round, begin!" the referee called.

Roark wasted no time. "Cranidos, Zen Headbutt!"

The Pokémon charged forward, its head glowing with psychic energy. Ethan called for Protect, but Serena was too exhausted from the previous battles. The attack struck home, sending Serena flying.

This time, Serena didn't get back up.

"Togepi is unable to battle!" the referee announced. "This round goes to the Gym Leader!"

Ethan recalled Serena, whispering words of praise as he did so. She had fought valiantly, taking down two of Roark's Pokémon against all odds. Now, it was up to Akira to finish the job.

"Akira, you're up!" Ethan called, releasing his Meditite onto the field.

Roark raised an eyebrow. "A Fighting-type against my Rock-types? An expected choice. But type advantage isn't everything. Cranidos, use Ancient Power!"

Glowing rocks rose from the ground, hurtling towards Akira.

"Detect!" Ethan commanded. Akira's eyes glowed as he nimbly dodged each rock, his movements fluid and precise.

"He's fast," Akira's voice resonated in Ethan's mind. "But not unbeatable."

Ethan nodded. "Let's slow him down. Use Confusion!"

Psychic energy pulsed from Akira, washing over Cranidos. The Rock-type shook its head, momentarily disoriented.

Roark gritted his teeth. "Shake it off, Cranidos! Use Headbutt!"

Cranidos charged forward, its thick skull lowered for impact. Ethan saw their opportunity.

"Akira, wait for it... now, Thunderpunch!"

Just as Cranidos was about to make contact, Akira's fist crackled with electrical energy. He sidestepped the Headbutt and landed a solid blow to Cranidos' side.

The unexpected move caught both Roark and Cranidos off guard. The Rock-type stumbled, electricity arcing across its body.

"Impressive!" Roark called out. "But it'll take more than that to bring down Cranidos. Use Take Down!"

Cranidos recovered quickly, charging with even greater ferocity. This time, the attack connected, sending Akira skidding across the rocky terrain.

Ethan winced, knowing the battle could go either way now. Both Pokémon were showing signs of fatigue.

"Akira, are you okay?" Ethan called out.

Akira rose to his feet, a determined look in his eyes. "I can finish this," his mental voice assured Ethan.

Ethan nodded. "Alright then. Let's end this with a combo. Use Acupressure, then follow up with Zen Headbutt!"

Akira closed his eyes, his hands moving in precise, practiced motions over specific points on his body. A soft, pulsing energy emanated from where his fingers touched. Suddenly, a surge of power flowed through him, and Ethan noticed Akira's stance become more solid, his defense visibly strengthening.

Roark sensed the change. "Don't let him finish! Cranidos, Zen Headbutt, full power!"

As Cranidos rushed forward, its head glowing with psychic energy, Akira's eyes snapped open. He met Cranidos' charge head-on, both Pokémon's skulls connecting with a resounding crack that echoed through the arena.

The impact was tremendous, sending shockwaves across the battlefield. For a moment, both Pokémon stood frozen, locked in a battle of wills. Akira's enhanced defense allowed him to withstand the brutal attack, his feet planted firmly despite the force of the collision.

Then, slowly, Cranidos began to stagger backward, its own attack partially reflected by Akira's fortified defense. The Rock-type Pokémon swayed on its feet, clearly dazed by the unexpected resilience of its opponent before it eventually toppled backwards to the ground.

"Cranidos is unable to battle!" the referee declared. "The victory goes to the challenger, Ethan!"

The crowd erupted into cheers as Ethan rushed onto the field, embracing Akira. "You did it! You were amazing!"

Roark recalled Cranidos, a look of both disappointment and respect on his face. He approached Ethan, holding out a hand. "That was one of the most exciting battles I've had in a long time. Your strategies and the bond with your Pokémon are truly impressive. You've more than earned this Coal Badge."

As Roark placed the shiny badge in Ethan's palm, a sense of accomplishment washed over him. Their first Gym battle, their first badge – it was a milestone that represented all their hard work and growth.

Conway rushed down from the stands, his eyes shining with excitement. "That was incredible, Ethan! The way you used Serena's Metronome, and then Akira's surprise Thunderpunch – brilliant!"

As Ethan basked in the glow of victory, Roark approached the gathered trainers. "Congratulations again, Ethan. To all remaining challengers, I'm afraid we'll have to continue the battles tomorrow. We'll honor the current queue, so Conway, you'll be up first thing in the morning."

Conway's face fell slightly, but he quickly recovered. "That's alright! It'll give me more time to refine my strategy. Plus, I got to see your battle tactics up close, Ethan. I might have to rethink a few things!"

As they made their way out of the Gym, discussing the highlights of the battle, Ethan's eyes were drawn to a figure standing across the street. The distinctive blue hair and uniform were unmistakable – Saturn was watching them, a calculating smile on his face.

Ethan tensed, but Saturn merely nodded in acknowledgment before turning and disappearing into the crowd.

"Everything okay?" Conway asked, noticing Ethan's sudden change in demeanor.

Ethan forced a smile. "Yeah, just thinking about our next move. I should probably head to the Pokémon Center to heal up."

The walk to the Pokémon Center was filled with animated discussion about the battle. Ethan found himself reliving key moments.

As they entered the Pokémon Center, the familiar soothing music and soft lighting washed over them. Nurse Joy greeted them with a warm smile from behind the counter.

"Welcome! Would you like me to heal your Pokémon?" she asked.

Ethan nodded, handing over his Pokéballs. "Yes, please. They fought hard today."

As Nurse Joy took their Pokémon for treatment, Conway turned to Ethan. "So, what's the plan now? Are you going to start training for the next Gym right away?"

Ethan considered for a moment. "I think we should stick around to watch your battle tomorrow. After that... well, we'll see where the road takes us."

Conway beamed at the suggestion. "That would be great!"

They made their way to the Center's cafeteria, the aroma of hearty stew and freshly baked bread making Ethan realize how hungry he was. As they settled into a booth with their trays, Conway pulled out his notebook.

"Okay, so based on what we saw in your battle, I'm thinking of leading with Aron," Conway began, sketching out battle formations. "Its Steel-type moves should be effective against Roark's Rock-types, and with Aerial Ace, we have a speed advantage..."

As Conway continued to detail his strategy, Ethan found his gaze drawn to the television mounted in the corner of the cafeteria. The local news was on, and a familiar face filled the screen.

"In business news, the Sinnoh branch of the Silph Company has announced a partnership with the up-and-coming research group, Team Galactic. The collaboration aims to develop new technologies for Pokémon training and conservation. Team Galactic's representative, Saturn, had this to say..."

The image cut to Saturn, his composed and charismatic demeanor a stark contrast to the calculating gaze Ethan had seen earlier. "Team Galactic is committed to advancing our understanding of Pokémon and the world we share with them. This partnership with Silph Co. will allow us to push the boundaries of what's possible, all for the betterment of both humans and Pokémon."

Ethan's fork clattered to his plate, drawing Conway's attention. "Ethan? Are you alright? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Before Ethan could respond, the Center's PA system crackled to life. "Ethan, your Pokémon are fully healed and ready for pickup. Please come to the front desk."

Grateful for the interruption, Ethan stood. "I'll be right back."

As Ethan walked to the front desk, his mind raced. Team Galactic was making moves, establishing themselves publicly as a legitimate organization. Whatever they were planning, it was clear they were playing a long game.

Nurse Joy handed over his Pokéballs with a smile. "Your Pokémon are in excellent condition. That must have been quite a battle!"

Ethan nodded absently, his fingers closing around the familiar weight of the Pokéballs. As he turned to head back to the cafeteria, he caught sight of his reflection in the polished surface of a nearby vending machine.

For a moment, he hardly recognized himself. The determined set of his jaw, the glint of hard-won experience in his eyes – he looked every inch the trainer he was becoming. But beneath that exterior, he could see the weight of knowledge and responsibility that set him apart in this world.

Ethan took a deep breath, centering himself. One challenge at a time, he reminded himself. Tomorrow was Conway's battle, and he would be there to support his friend. After that... well, they would face whatever came next.

As he rejoined Conway at their table, Ethan found himself tuning back into his friend's excited strategizing.

"...and if we can set up a Rock Tomb early, we can control the flow of the battle," Conway was saying, his eyes alight with enthusiasm. "What do you think, Ethan? Any last-minute advice?"

Ethan considered for a moment, pushing aside his concerns about Team Galactic for now. "Remember, Roark's not just about raw power. He's clever, and he'll try to outmaneuver you. Stay flexible, and don't be afraid to change your plan if things aren't working."

Conway nodded seriously, jotting down notes. "Got it. Flexibility. Adaptability. I can do that."

As the evening wore on, the TV's soft murmur of news and the gentle hum of conversation from other trainers provided a comforting background. Despite the lingering unease about Team Galactic's plans, Ethan found himself getting caught up in the excitement of the upcoming battle.

Later, as they headed to their rooms for the night, Conway paused at his door. "Hey, Ethan? Thanks for sticking around for my battle. It... it means a lot."

Ethan smiled, feeling a warmth that had nothing to do with the day's exertions. "That's what friends are for, Conway. Get some rest. Tomorrow's your big day."

As Ethan entered his own room, he was greeted by the sight of Serena and Akira who released themselves out of their Pokeballs and began settling in their usual spots. Serena chirped a sleepy greeting from her nest on the nightstand, while Akira opened one eye from his meditative pose on the windowsill.

"You're projecting again," Akira's mental voice sounded in Ethan's mind. "Worry about tomorrow's battles, not nebulous future threats."

Ethan sighed, sinking onto the bed. "You're right, as usual. It's just... everything's happening so fast."

He felt a small weight land on his lap and looked down to see Serena gazing up at him with concerned eyes. "Toge?" she chirped questioningly.

Despite his worries, Ethan couldn't help but smile. He gently stroked Serena's shell, feeling some of the tension leave his body. "I'm okay. Just thinking too much, as usual."

As he prepared for bed, Ethan's gaze fell on his badge case, the newly acquired Coal Badge gleaming in the soft light. It was a reminder of how far they'd come, and the challenges they'd overcome together.

Settling into bed, Ethan's last thoughts before drifting off were not of Team Galactic or future dangers, but of Conway's upcoming battle. He found himself looking forward to cheering on his friend, to experiencing the excitement of a Gym battle from a different perspective.

The soft glow of the streetlights outside filtered through the curtains, casting gentle shadows across the room. In the quiet of the night, with his Pokémon nearby and the promise of tomorrow's adventures ahead, Ethan finally felt the day's tension begin to ebb away.
