What is wrong with Eve?
Eve is just returning into her room when there is a knock on the door. It is her twin brother Jonah, who wants to borrow her maths book. Jonah and Eve are, even though they are boy and girl, twins as it is written in the book. They understand each other blindly and each one always senses exactly how the other one feels. Even now, Jonah immediately notices that something is bothering his twin sister. He sits down on the bed with her and wants to know what is wrong. Eve doesn't want to say it at first, but then pulls herself together.
"Tell me, Jonah, does it ever bother you when the girls only go on a date with you just because you are our dad's son?" Jonah laughs.
"I always see that as a bonus point. You have to get the girls to notice you somehow, and having a rich father isn't a bad way to attract them."
Eve rolls her eyes. She seems to think very differently than her brother on this point. Jonah tries to cheer up the mood.
"Take it easy, sis. That's just how dating works. Most girls are only interested in you if you're an athlete or can show other superhero qualities or if you treat them like a princess. Just think about our parents and how they fell in love. Mom was as poor as a church mouse and worked as a nanny for Dad and he was the fancy, rich Broadway producer who could show her a whole new world."
"You can't compare that! Our parents really love each other. I mean, look at them. Married for ages and still flirting like they're just started dating."
"Yes, of course, our parents love each other. At some point, when things get serious, love should be involved. But to get there, you have to show what you have. Or do you think Mom didn't care at all that Dad was so wealthy? She was certainly impressed by all the things he made possible for her. Shopping without getting her credit card cut; Enjoying dinner at the most expensive restaurants and all the stars she got to meet thanks to him. Mom fell in love with the whole package, including all the luxury and pomp. But actually I still don't get what your problem is."
Eve just wants to tell him the story about Jackson when Jonah jumps up alarmed.
"Oh my God, I have to go! I'm going to be late for hockey practice. Bye, we'll talk another time. Tell Mom and Dad I'll be late."
Jonah storms out of the room, leaving a thoughtful Eve behind.
During dinner, Eve is unusually quiet. Her mother looks at her with some concern.
"Is there something wrong with you, sweetheart? You've barely touched your food. It's hard to believe that you're descended from a Fine by birth."
"After all, she carries my Sheffield genes." adds Maxwell with a grin. Eve puts on a carefree smile.
"Everything is fine, Mom! I'm just not that hungry because... I met up with the other girls from dance class earlier to work on our choreography for our next show. And our trainer bought us all pizza."
"Oh, I see. That's good."
Maxwell looks at his daughter with a feigned serious expression.
"Don't let James hear that you're turning down his excellent meal for some fast food."
James is the Sheffields' butler. After Maxwell, Fran and the children, as well as Niles and CC, moved to LA, Niles started his own business. He noticed how many nanny agencies there were in Los Angeles and the idea of starting an agency for butlers came up to him. Young men who wants to pursue a career as a butler have now the chance to contact his agency. Everyone first has to attend a training class to learn the correct behavior of a butler. Anyone who successfully graduates from this class, receives a certificate and is referred by the agency accordingly. At the beginning, his business was mediocre and Niles had to listen to some malicious comments, especially from his own wife CC. Although they were now happily married, she still couldn't resist teasing him with little sarcastic remarks. But he wasn't any better in that area. That was the spice of their marriage. But recently business is now going very well and Niles can truly be proud of himself.
After dinner, Eve retreats to her room while Maxwell and Fran head out to the patio. Fran is still a little worried about her daughter and shares her thoughts with her husband.
"Have you noticed that Eve seems a bit depressed lately? I have this feeling for a while now that something is troubling her!"
"Really? I didn't see anything. She's a happy, bright and smart girl. She gets good grades and does her sports and other activities. I haven't noticed anything wrong so far."
"I'm not sure either, but lately she's been so quiet and thoughtful sometimes. As if she's carrying some dark secret with her."
"Did you ask Jonah? Maybe he knows something."
"This is a waste of time! He won't betray his sister. No amount of bribery will help. He wouldn't even spill the beans if I would torture him with my Barbra Streisand playlist."
"Hmm…it cant't be that dramatic. Otherwise she would have come to you long ago. You two have such a close relationship."
"That's exactly why I'm so worried. There seems to be something she doesn't want or can't tell me." Maxwell puts his arm around his wife.
"You're just worrying too much. Maybe she's just stressed at school. It makes sense that she doesn't come to you with that. You know, darling, I love you more than anything, but our children's school matters aren't exactly your strong suit."
Fran bites on her lip. She knows Maxwell is right on this point. Ever since Jonah and Eve started with High School, she was mostly out of the loop. Taking care of school matters was Maxwell's part. Fran snuggles up to her husband.
"Maybe you're right!"
"Absolutely! You should not forget, Eve is seventeen now. That's a difficult age. The carefree years of childhood are over, but you're not quite an adult yet. I remember when I was that age, I was sometimes also very thoughtful and melancholic."
Fran looks at her husband in surprise. She has to admit that he may have hit the nail with his assumption. Eve was really at a very critical age and she had always been the sensitive one.
"Let's hope it's just that!"
Fran smiles at her husband and the two toast on the evening with a glass of wine.
Little do they know what their daughter is really worried about. She sits in her room in front of her mirror and leafing through some fashion magazines that she stole from her mother. She looks at the models and then looks at herself with a critical eye. She thinks she is far too boring and dull. No wonder no boy has been interested in her so far. Eve comes to the conclusion, she urgently needs to change her style and her appearance. She continues to scour the magazines to gather more ideas on how she can spice up her look a little bit.
