Chapter two: New Friends.

Akihiko.

Hiroki stood there with his back to his best friend. "You're insane." He told Akihiko as they walked towards their usual restaurant. "You're gonna babysit a full ass grown adult, when you're the only adult I know that acts like a child. Who the hell is this kid anyway?"

Akihiko rolled his eyes, not taking notice of the casual insults being thrown his way, already used to his friend's antics. "His Takahiro's younger brother." He answered.

Hiroki stopped and finally turned to look at Akihiko. "Baka-hiko, again. Why are you always at that man's beck and call. I know he means more to you than you do to him, but that doesn't mean that you have to drop everything whenever he asks something off you." Hiroki argued.

"It's not like that Hiroki, he asked for a favor, and I agreed. His going on his honeymoon with Manimi and someone's gotta look out for Misaki while his away." Akihiko explained as they walked into the restaurant and took their seats.

"So, his name is Misaki, have you even met the kid yet?"

"His not a kid," Akihiko Argued, "he is an adult, but he needs more help than most."

Hiroki looked at his friend with confusion. "If he is an adult, then why does he need babysitting."

Akihiko thought about it for a moment, he didn't have Misaki's permission to explain his situation, but he was going to be Hiroki's student soon enough, so maybe it wouldn't be a problem for him to explain the situation to his friend. "Yes, I've met him a few times now, and he does need a little more help than most. Misaki is blind. I won't go into details but his been blind since he was eight years old, and Takahiro doesn't feel comfortable leaving him by himself for long periods of time. So, while Takahiro is on his honeymoon, he'll come and live with me."

"Blind? Well, that explains a lot." Hiroki commented, then he seemed to think about something, while lost in his thoughts he didn't see the waitress come over and her asking for their dishes shocked him out of his thoughts.

Once they ordered Akihiko asked. "Do you see now? I can't leave Takahiro's younger brother alone with no one to give him a hand."

"Are you sure you're up to the task, taking care of a kid is a lot of work? You'll have to be on call 24/7, once you agree to this there is no take backs once Takahiro leaves."

Akihiko scoffed at his friend's words. "First of all, his not a kid, his a full grown adult. Second, his not completely dependent on others, he just needs help with simple things, like having meals prepared in advance and help with reading things without brail. Finally, I'm not completely useless and if I can do those things for myself, I can do them for Misaki."

"I don't know, you can barely cook and do you really want this 'not a kid' kid to eat take-out every meal."

"Okay, so I can't cook, so what. There are some healthy take-out places near my place that are packed with everything he could need."

"Fine. Do what you want, but if you need my help just give me a call. But if you call when I'm busy, don't blame me for not picking up."

"Thanks Hiroki." Akihiko really had the best of friends; he knew that he wasn't doing this alone no matter how much Hiroki complained to him about his decision.

The conversation ended just as their meals were being served. They enjoyed their meal while the conversation took to other places, such as work and Hiroki's adorable goof ball partner Nowaki.

Misaki.

Takahiro's wedding was approaching and Misaki couldn't be happier for his brother. He and Akihiko had met Manimi a handful of times, and she was wonderful. Misaki had the feeling that every time he met with Akihiko he was sad. He couldn't place where this feeling came from, just that it was there.

He remembered the first night they had met and how quiet the man was every time Takahiro mentioned Manimi, then the night of Takahiro's birthday and when he announced the engagement, if felt wrong. Like something was dying. He knew something was going on with Akihiko and his brother, he also knew his brother had no idea nor interest in the author.

Misaki was becoming more familiar with Akihiko and the two had quite a bit in common. They both loved literature and finding out Akihiko was an author was one of the things that really made them click. Unfortunately, the man had nothing in brail or audio so Misaki couldn't enjoy the man's work. He did promise that he was going to change that soon and that he'll have a word with his publishing company to see if they could make his books more accessible to those with difficulty with their sight.

"Misaki." He heard Takahiro calling from the other room. Using the walls as his guide, he made his way out of his bedroom to the living area.

"Nii-Chan?" He asked as he entered the room.

"I'm on the sofa." He heard his brother say, so he made his way to his usual chair. "Usagi is here too." Takahiro added as Misaki was taking his seat.

"Hi Misaki." He heard the now familiar smooth voice say.

"Hello Usami-San." He replied.

"Misaki," Came Takahiro's voice. "I've gotta go to a fitting for my tux, just some final adjustments before the big day. Usagi is gonna be here if you need anything."

Misaki heard some rustling coming from in front of him and guest his brother was preparing to leave. "What, you don't want my expertise on how it looks, Nii-Chan?" There was a short pause before Misaki added, "joking."

All three laughed at that and then his brother was gone.

"So, what do you wanna do today?" Akihiko asked.

"Well, now that I passed the entrance exams, with flying colours I might add, I don't need to study. So, what do you want to do?" Misaki was kind of proud that all his hard work paid off nicely. He had gotten into his favourite university and school was finally over, he wanted to celebrate with his brother, but he wouldn't complain at Takahiro's busyness. Maybe they could all celebrate their new lives after Takahiro comes back from his honeymoon. But for now, he didn't care what they did.

"Congratulations." Akihiko said. "Do you wanna go somewhere to celebrate? You can celebrate with Takahiro after the wedding, how does a meal at a fancy restaurant sound?"

Was this man a mind reader, was he not just thinking that very same thing. "That sounds great." He simply said.

"Okay, before that though, you've gotta change out of those tracksuits."

Fifteen minutes later Akihiko was guiding him to his car. Misaki was now wearing a light blue button-down shirt, black tight-fitting jeans, and a pair of black loafers, along with his usual white cane and black out glasses. He didn't know if he looked any good in this outfit, but Akihiko seemed pleased with his choice.

Once at the restaurant they were seated fairly quickly, and Akihiko described the table for him. "You've got salt and pepper holders in a box to your left, the menu is in the middle of the table and your chopsticks are to your right."

"Thank you, Usami-San. Is there brail on the menu?" Misaki asked.

"Ummm … I didn't think about that, sorry."

"That's fine," Misaki said, waving off his concerns, "can you read the soft drinks menu to me?"

Akihiko complied and Misaki chose a ginger ale mock-tail with fruit. Not long after they chose their drinks a waitress appeared at their table. Akihiko must have signaled her in some way Misaki didn't notice.

"Hello sirs, what can I get you to drink?" Misaki replied with his order, but before she asked Akihiko she said, "sir, this is a fine dining establishment, can you please remove your glasses?" Misaki sat there stunned for a moment.

Akihiko cleared his throat. "He doesn't need to do that." He stated rather angrily and Misaki could feel the annoyance coming from him. He was glad that Akihiko would defend him, but all was needed was a little explanation.

"Excuse me, what's your name?" Misaki asked, wanting to make the waitress feel more comfortable.

"It's Hayashi." The waitress replied.

"Hayashi-San, I wear these glasses to make others more comfortable around me, it can be quite uncomfortable to look at a blind person's eyes. I hope you understand why I insist on wearing them." Misaki explained calmly, hoping that he didn't make Hayashi uncomfortable in any way, but he did need to explain his situation in a hope that this misunderstanding wouldn't happen to anyone else.

"Sir, I'm so sorry, I didn't know." Hayashi said rather panicked.

"No need to panic Hayashi-San, you didn't know, nor would I expect you to. But please keep this in mind in the future."

"I will sir, thank you." Then she continued with taking the orders.

Once she left, Misaki let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Usami-San, for stepping in, but there was no reason to get so angry on my behalf, it was just a misunderstanding."

"She could have been more accommodating." He was still angry.

"She didn't know, now she does and I'm sure she'll keep this in mind for next time she comes across a blind person. This is a good thing."

"I'm surprised you're not more upset about this." Akihiko stated, more calmly this time.

"I'm used to people asking questions or misunderstanding my situation, usually it's just a bit awkward, but allowing others to learn from their mistakes and hoping that the person doesn't make the same mistake again is just life. We all have different needs and expectations for ourselves, expecting others to know exactly what your needs are is childish. If I want people to understand what I need, then I have to tell them what I need. It's not like they'll just know."

"Mmm." Akihiko seemed to consider this for a moment. "You're very mature for your age, but I guess that's to be expected."

"I don't think so, why? Do I not act like others my age?"

"Not really, most people your age would have looked upon the situation we were just in and be furious that the waitress didn't know better. Some people would even put it on social media and start a fuss hoping to get her sacked. But you … you just handled it so calmly and without any drama."

Misaki laughed at that. "Well, the situation didn't call for drama. Now, if she had said something like 'prove that you're blind' or 'I don't care if you're blind.' Then I would have cause more of a fuss."

"Would you really have caused a fuss?" Akihiko correctly questioned.

"Mmm … you're right, I probably would have asked to leave. I don't like confrontation." Misaki admitted.

Just then the Hayashi arrived with their drinks. "Here you go, I'm really sorry again." She said as she sat down the drinks. "Your drink is on the right, just above your chopsticks." She added.

"Thank you, and like I said, there's no need to feel sorry, you didn't know." He replied. "And thank you for being so understanding."

"She nodded and smiled." Akihiko mentioned for Misaki's benefit. So Misaki turned his head towards the direction Hayashi's voice was coming from and beamed at her.

"Have you decided on your meals yet?" She asked.

"Not yet, do you have any recommendations?" Misaki replied, hoping to get their food sooner rather than later.

"How about I order for the both of us?" Akihiko suggested. Misaki smiled and nodded, so he did.

Half an hour later they were tucking into their meals. Akihiko had ordered them both a pork belly ramen and Misaki was thoroughly enjoying it.

"Congratulations on passing your entrance exams Misaki."

"Thank you." He replied smiling away. "And here's to new friendships." He raised his glass and felt Akihiko knock his glass against his own.

"New friendships." Akihiko repeated.
