"I'm sure it was nothing! That girl seems kinda air-headed, y'know?" Sonic laughed uncomfortably.
Sonic and Tails were walking through the gates of the fairground, it had only been a few minutes since their encounter with Amy Rose.
"Do I look like a girl?" Tails asked, wrangling one of his tails in his hands.
"No! No! You look… Um…" Sonic bit his lip as he scanned the fox up and down. Lush golden fur, long bangs, sparkling eyes. Oh Chaos.
Tails squinted at Sonic, causing him to gulp.
"Well, you're pretty," Sonic mumbled. "But uhh, beauty isn't specifically a girly trait…"
In truth, Sonic had always thought that both girls and boys were pretty. He'd learned at a young age to keep those thoughts to himself, though, as most people thought it was taboo. Or at least, the taboo part was Sonic thinking other boys were pretty, which had always confused him as a kid. Now as an adult he understood better, but unfortunately, it was too late and now Sonic was faced with a situation he didn't properly know how to handle.
"Is it my voice?" Tails asked, his voice cracking on the last word.
Tails did sound kinda feminine, but Sonic had genuinely not noticed that until just now.
"I don't think you should worry about it, dude, has anyone else mistaken you for a girl before?"
The latter half of Sonic's sentence came out as if he'd just spaced out, this was because Sonic had just realized Tails hadn't reacted to him calling him pretty.
"When I was little, yeah, but ever since I was a teen I've done my best to look more masculine. I can't change my voice, obviously, but I guess it never really mattered anyways due to no one even really noticing me."
Tails looked lost in thought. The conversation died as the two friends stopped in the fair's plaza, Sonic looking around as if trying to find a distraction. They'd already finished their ice cream before they entered the park, so there wasn't anything stopping them from enjoying the fair immediately.
"Hello, what can I do for you?" The ticket booth attendant asked as Sonic and Tails approached.
"Two fair tickets, please!" Sonic smiled.
The attendant glanced over the two, and was silent. She smiled warmly and pointed upward. "Look at the sign, dearies, cute couples get in for free this week!"
Tails looked up from the ground for the first time in several minutes, his eyes meeting the sign as his mouth dropped open.
Sonic blushed. "Oh, thank you!" He responded, before grabbing Tails hand and pulling the fox towards the rides before he could say anything.
"S-Sonic!" Tails whimpered. "We're not a couple though! Isn't this dishonest?"
Sonic looked back at Tails, their eyes meeting as they shared a crimson blush. "Aw Tails, we just got let into the fair for free! Why should we waste this opportunity?"
"Because we basically just lied to that nice lady…"
The two stopped in front of the ferris wheel, standing close together so that their conversation couldn't be overheard.
"We didn't even say anything! Lies are when you purposely distort the truth in order to deceive, a lie couldn't have been spoken if we didn't speak at all." Sonic smiled warmly at the pretty golden fox in front of him.
"Besides, we are cute- Even if we aren't a couple!"
Tails bit his lip as Sonic patted him on the shoulder. Why does he have to smile like that? Oh Chaos he's right, isn't he?
"Do you wanna ride the ferris wheel first?" Sonic asked, his hand resting on Tails' shoulder.
"Sure…"
The two waited until the ride stopped and the passengers got off, then they made their way over to the platform and climbed into one of the cars.
Tails pressed his cheek against the window as the ferris wheel jolted to a start, watching the people outside shrink as the great machine slowly lifted them into the air.
Sonic was also distracted, looking out of the window on his side. He was lost in thought, the day was chilly yet the cart felt warm- Sonic could feel Tails pressed up against him slightly, as there wasn't very much room in the car.
When they could see the clouds and the horizon the ride jolted to a stop, similar to how it'd started. Sonic held his breath, this was the moment he'd been waiting for, yet dreading at the same time.
There were no possible distractions now, no friends to interrupt, no beeping alarm…
Tails gulped, he turned to look at Sonic, Sonic doing the same. Their eyes met.
A heartbeat.
"Tails?" Sonic asked, fidgeting.
"Yes?" Tails responded.
The heat grew more intense between them, there was no denying it now that it was radiating off of the two of them in waves. It felt like a sauna in the car now, making both fox and hedgehog feel uncomfortable at being so close.
"Uh, this is gonna sound weird, but…" Sonic swallowed.
Their gazes were locked, transfixed on eachother, a stare so intense that a bomb could go off and it still wouldn't break.
"Sonic?" Tails gulped.
"Do you wanna be my boyfriend?" Sonic asked, finally, after what felt like a millenia.
Tails somehow bit both of his cheeks at the same time, the heat on his face now spreading to his ears and shoulders.
"Sure…"
Sonic blanked, then inhaled, then freaked out.
"O-Only if you want to, I mean!" He mentally kicked himself. "I know w-we just met, like, yesterday, but I, I uh…"
Sonic's words trailed off as Tails leaned in close, then Sonic leaned in too-
They accidentally bumped their noses together, causing them both to recoil back.
"S-Sorry!" Sonic cried out, clenching his nose as Tails did the same. "We can kiss if you want. I didn't mean to do that!" Sonic blurted, blushing deeply as he realized what he was saying only after he'd said it.
"It's fine, oh Chaos this is awkward." Tails finished rubbing his nose, the slight pain from the bump now faded away.
Sonic gulped, then he leaned in again, this time much slower.
Tails leaned it too, his eyes closing as their noses touched gently.
It was like time had slowed down, and Sonic found himself facing a new dilemma. On one hand, he wanted to close his eyes and lose himself in the moment, like it happened in every romance movie ever. But on the other hand, he didn't want to miss a second of this, he wanted to see Tails' lips approaching him, to feel his soft emo bangs against his forehead, and to look deep into the foxes' ocean pools as they kissed.
"Tails?" Sonic asked, mere moments before their lips would have made contact.
"What now?" Tails looked a bit annoyed, causing Sonic to fidget once more.
"Can you keep your eyes open, while we kiss? It's just that they're so utterly beautiful, and, well, I wanna be able to look into them for this moment…"
Tails blinked. "Isn't that kinda weird? I've never seen a movie where a couple kisses with their eyes open."
"I- I know, but like, I hoped it wouldn't be weird if we were both doing it, y'know?" Chaos above I am the stupidest hedgehog on mobius!
"W-We're also kind've a weird couple, anyways, cus we're both boys…" Sonic looked at his lap, ears drooping.
Tails hummed, then he gently lifted Sonic's chin so that their eyes met once more. "I guess it's not so weird, if you look at it that way. Besides, that ticket booth lady seemed to think we were cute enough." Talis winked.
They both let out a breath, then they slowly came closer for the third time.
The ferris wheel jolted to life once more, causing Tails and Sonic to plant their lips together sooner than they'd expected. They both gazed into eachothers eyes, blushing as the heat in the car heightened.
After a second the two pulled back, Tails bit his lip as he eyed the world outside the window.
After a few seconds of silence, Tails said: "I would love to be your boyfriend, Sonic. Even if we don't know each other so well. I feel this… Connection, with you." Tails allowed a soft smile to form on his muzzle. "Plus, it's really cute how you flick your ear when you're nervous."
"Yeah." Sonic sighed dreamily, he was also gazing out the window.
A heart beat.
"Wait what!? My ear doesn't flick when I'm nervous!"
Tails burst out laughing, giving Sonic a light punch on the shoulder. "It so does, look in the mirror when you're anxious and you'll see!"
Sonic couldn't help but laugh with Tails, dawning a smile of his own as he enjoyed his new boyfriend's company.
