Chapter 14: The Walls Have Ears
The flames in the fireplace danced, casting flickering shadows across his office. The crackling fire provided the only source of warmth and illumination, its gentle glow bathing the room in a soft light.
Severus stood leaning against his desk, the cold of the morning still heavy in the air even as the fireplace crackled.
A soft knock at the door shattered the stillness of the early morning. Even as he had awaited her, he found himself startled from his reverie, Severus glanced up, his dark eyes narrowing in the curiosity of what was to come.
Summoning his composure, Severus steeled himself. He waved his hand silently, causing the door to swing open with a soft creak. "Enter," he said in his usual measured tone.
As the door swung open, it revealed the figure in the doorway. As he had expected, it was none other than Minerva McGonagall, the headmistress of Hogwarts.
"Severus," she greeted him, her voice carrying a note of gravitas beneath its usual composure. "May I come in?"
Severus paused, momentarily wondering if he should deny her. He couldn't help but wonder what had prompted her to seek him out so early on the weekend. He nodded in assent, granting her permission to enter his domain.
As Minerva stepped into the office, Severus rose from his desk with a fluid motion and moved to the seating area, indicating for Minerva to take a seat in one of the plush armchairs. He settled into the chair opposite her.
A moment of silence stretched between them, the crackling of the fire the only sound filling the room. Severus studied Minerva's expression, noting the subtle tightness etched upon her features. Despite her composed demeanor, he couldn't shake the feeling that something weighed heavily on her mind.
"Minerva," Severus began, his voice a low murmur that echoed in the quiet confines of the office. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?"
"Severus," Minerva began, her gaze meeting his with a mixture of concern and determination. "I hope you don't mind my unannounced visit."
Severus shook his head, indicating that her presence was indeed welcome.
"I've noticed you've been rather preoccupied lately," Minerva continued, her voice gentle yet firm. "I will deny it to the masses, but I worry about you. And I couldn't help but wonder if everything is all right."
Severus regarded her silently for a moment, appreciating her concern. "I suppose I am," he admitted quietly, his mind drifting back to the last few weeks, his gaze dropping to the floor. "There are...things on my mind."
Minerva nodded empathetically, her eyes reflecting the flickering firelight. "It's not easy, facing one's demons," she remarked, her tone empathetic. "But know that you need not face them alone."
Severus felt a knot form in his throat at her words, a surge of emotion welling up within him.
"Thank you, Minerva," he said quietly. "Your concern means more to me than you know. Even if it is at an ungodly hourly," a small smirk played on his lips.
"Hardly," Minerva offered him a small smile. "Anytime, Severus," she replied warmly. "Remember, we are all here to support you, no matter what challenges you may face."
Severus nodded, his gratitude evident in the slight tilt of his head. "I will keep that in mind," he assured her, his voice steadier now.
A brief silence settled between them, filled only by the crackling of the fire and the soft ticking of the clock on the mantelpiece. Severus found himself lost in thought, his mind drifting back to his conversation with Albus.
Minerva watched him with keen interest, her gaze unwavering as she took in his troubled expression. "Severus," she began, her tone gentle yet probing. "My visit serves another purpose."
Severus looked up, curiosity flickering in his eyes. "Yes, Minerva?"
"I couldn't help but notice... you have been entertaining late-night visits," she said delicately.
Severus tensed imperceptibly, a flicker of surprise crossing his features before he quickly schooled his expression into one of neutrality. "Yes," he admitted reluctantly, his voice betraying none of the turmoil roiling within him. "I have found recent company to be … comforting."
Minerva regarded him silently for a moment longer, her expression inscrutable. "Indeed," she said finally, her tone thoughtful. "But might I suggest keeping such activities within the privacy of your chambers? Whilst I can keep mum on your rendezvous, the castle walls do have ears, you know."
Severus's heart skipped a beat at her words, a surge of apprehension coursing through him as fond memories arose to the forefront. He knew that nothing remained hidden within the walls of Hogwarts, especially not his own secrets.
A faint blush crept onto Severus's cheeks at her teasing, but he couldn't suppress a small smirk. "Noted," he replied, his tone dry.
Minerva chuckled softly, a knowing smile playing at the corners of her lips. "And who knows," she added playfully, "perhaps this means you'll finally be settling down? With a certain bright young witch, perhaps?"
Severus's smirk faltered slightly at the mention of Hermione, his gaze flickering with a mix of emotions. "I wouldn't hold my breath, Minerva" he replied evasively, his tone guarded.
Minerva's smile softened, a hint of understanding in her eyes. "Well, remember, Severus," she said gently, "If you need an ear, I will always find the time for you."
Severus couldn't help but chuckle softly at her. "And will you be threatening me with bodily harm, Minerva?" he quipped.
Minerva raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a wry smile. "I hardly need to, Severus," she replied dryly. "I'm quite certain Miss Granger is capable of dismembering you herself if need be."
Severus couldn't help but chuckle softly at her remark. "I agree," he said softly, a warmth in his voice. "She is remarkable and... quite capable."
Minerva's smile widened at his admission. "I thought you might see it that way," she replied with a knowing twinkle in her eye. "Severus, for the love of Merlin, try to keep your activities discreet. There are many young impressionable wizards and witches about, and we wouldn't want any scandals now, would we?"
Severus nodded, a genuine appreciation in his eyes. "Understood, Minerva," he replied, his tone earnest.
With that, Minerva bid him good day and left him alone once more, the echoes of her words lingering in the air. Sinking back into his chair, Severus couldn't help but ponder further on the conversation, her words stirring a mix of emotions within him.
