German authorities were on the field not ten minutes later. They rounded up and arrested Wanda, Sam, Clint, and Scott. Ava winced as she watched the cuffs snap around their wrists. Wanda looked miserable as they took extra efforts to restrain her, fearful of her magic.

Ava stood off to the side. It felt wrong to be not facing the same consequences as her teammates, but Nat had pulled her aside and said, "If we don't tell them, they won't know you did anything against the Accords. You being a minor and not an Avenger complicates things, so we're not sure how they'll react if they notice you. So keep your head down and stay out of the way. Please, Ava."

Ava nodded, glancing to where Vision was talking to some officers. The Black Panther, T'Challa, who'd joined Tony's group, was nowhere to be seen. Tony had followed Rhodey to the hospital, where he was being admitted into emergency care.

She turned back when Nat handed her a backpack. "Here," she said, and Ava took it. "I gathered your phone and some spare clothes for you. I was assuming you didn't bring any with you."

Ava blushed. "Thanks."

Nat walked over to Vision. "What's the plan for the kids?" Ava assumed that Nat was referring to Ava and her siblings, but didn't understand why Kat and Ben were of concern right now.

"Mr. Stark put Mr. Hogan in charge of Spider-Man's transportation. I'd imagine Ava could join them," Vision replied.

Wait, what?

Spider-Man was the other kid? Ava had been able to tell he was young, but he was that young?

Nat nodded. "There's going to be a lot of legal and PR cleanup here, so that's probably for the best."

She motioned to Ava to join her and Vision, and Spider-Man walked over too. Ava did a double take when she noticed his mask was missing. She was shocked to find, as she studied his now exposed face, that he was her age. Couldn't have been much older than fifteen.

"Alright Spider-kid, Ava, I'll wait with you two until Happy gets here. He'll take you back to New York when…he can." Spider-Man nodded, glancing up at Nat when he heard the names. He and Ava shared a glance, before he looked back down at his feet, cheeks red.

A few minutes later, Happy pulled up. Rolling down the window, he asked, "Wait, why's she here?" when he saw Ava. "Oh great you're not gonna stick her with…you are, aren't you."

Nat smiled softly. "Hi Happy, can Ava tag along with you and Spider-Man here?"

Happy sighed. "Fine," he grumbled. "Hop in squirts."

Ava and Spider-Man (it felt weird to call him that when he was barely more than a kid, but for lack of a better name that's what she stuck with) made brief eye contact as they both slid into the backseat. Ava watched Nat wave for a moment as they pulled away, before she left to go problem-solve with Vision.

Next to her, Spider-Man was also staring out the window. Ava could feel his pent-up energy – his leg was going to drill a hole in the floor if it kept bouncing like that. He also kept glancing sideways at Ava every few minutes and it was driving her crazy.

It was silent for a bit longer, before Happy sighed again as a thought seemed to occur again. "So, Peter," he started, and Ava looked up sharply as she heard the name. Happy noticed her reaction in the rearview mirror. "Oh, have you two not met yet? Like officially?"

Ava and Spider-Man – Peter? – looked at each other in confusion and shook their heads silently.

"Uh, no," Ava replied.

"Of course you haven't. Why would you?" he said sarcastically. "Well. Peter, Ava. Ava, Peter." he said, dipping his head to indicate between the two of them. Ava made a poor attempt at smiling at Peter. It was hard to muster the energy to be friendly at the moment.

"Hi," Peter said with a small smile, before dropping his expression again and drumming his fingers on his knee.

Happy cleared his throat awkwardly. "Well, what I was going to say was…shoot, I forgot."

The silence continued uncomfortably for several more minutes, before they finally pulled up to what Ava assumed was the hotel they were supposed to stay in. It looked exactly like the fancy hotels from movies, which were Ava's only experience with hotels, ever. Sometimes, she thought she was doing real well on her "real world experience" and this trip had only served to remind her how little she'd actually experienced. Hotels, airports, other teenagers (to name a few).

"We're here," Happy said, unnecessarily, as they parked. Ava and Peter both got out, and stood next to the car, unsure of what to do next.

Happy started walking towards the hotel, and when he turned back to see if they were following, called exasperatedly, "Come on, kids!"

They walked straight through the lobby, up the elevator, before stopping at almost the top floor.

They made their way over to the room, Happy leading the way, Peter walking fairly confidently behind him, and Ava bringing up the rear. It was like a labyrinth in these hallways.

Happy fiddled with the keys, pulling out one for himself and tossing another to Peter. They both unlocked their doors. Peter looked at Ava with a questioning glance as he seemed to realize the issue. "What about -?"

"Oh great," Happy said, coming to the same realization. "Tony only planned for Peter. We don't have a room for you, Ava. I'll have to call the front desk and see if they can get us another…" He sighed and walked into his room. Ava followed him slowly, and Peter took the cue to slip into his room and close the door.

Ava stood near the doorframe as Happy picked up the phone. He turned to her first, jabbing a thumb at the bathroom. "Why don't you go clean up while I sort this out?"

"Okay," she said, and walked to the bathroom, closing the door and starting her shower.

In the shower, she finally got a chance to really think about what it meant now that everything at the airport had happened. Clint, Wanda, Sam, and that Scott guy were probably in prison. Steve and Barnes were on the run, trying to take down the other Winter Soldiers, likely. They were all criminals.

What was gonna happen now that half of her family was gone? Out of the Avengers living at the compound, that only left Nat, Rhodey, and Vision. Rhodey was barely there anyways and was in the hospital sustaining serious injuries at the moment. Vision, as human as he felt, wasn't human at all, and Nat…well, Ava had heard that she had helped Steve and Sam at the last minute, so Ava wasn't even sure she'd be safe from the law.

Who did that leave for her, Kat, and Ben?

Ava came out of the bathroom sometime later, her hair in a braid and wearing some spare sweatpants and a t-shirt Nat had snuck to her in the backpack.

"We can't get a second room," Happy said when he saw her. "The hotel is completely booked this weekend. Ridiculous."

"Oh," Ava replied. "So?"

"You'll go in the other room; I think Peter's room has a larger couch and I don't want to share my room with any of the super-teens in the building. It's bad for my health," Happy said, sounding exhausted.

"Oh, okay. She noticed some excited yelling from the room next to her. "Who's he talking to?" she asked Happy, who looked up, finally noticing her.

He sighed heavily. "That kid. He was making a video diary about the trip on the way here. I'll bet that's what he's doing."

He stood up. "I'll go get him to calm down, let him know what the plan is."

Ava gave an uncertain thumbs up and followed Happy out, grabbing her backpack on the way. She could hear Peter's one-sided conversation through the walls.

Peter was talking animatedly to what Ava now knew was his camera. "It was the most amazing thing that's ever happened! So Mr. Stark was like, 'Hey, Underoos!' and I just sort of flipped in and I stole Cap's shield. I was like, 'Hey, what's up, everybody?' And then…"

Happy knocked on the door.

"Hey, just a second! Coming!"

She heard a soft thump and heard the door open. "Hey," Peter greeted. He was now wearing pajama pants and a NASA t-shirt. Seeing him in normal clothes, plus his child-like excitement about seeing Captain America, was like a slap in the face of how normal his life was (compared to her, of course, she imagined most teenagers weren't vigilantes in their spare time).

"We have thin walls here," Happy said, and Peter's cheeks reddened. "We couldn't get another room, so Ava's sleeping on your couch."

"Oh, uh, okay," Peter replied, looking confused.

"All this Accords stuff is giving me a migraine, so please don't bother me. I need a long nap," Happy said, shaking his finger threateningly, as he disappeared back into his room, leaving Ava and Peter in the hallway.

Peter watched him shut the door, then turned to Ava. "Uh, come in, I guess," he said. He opened a door she had hardly noticed. "This is kinda insane, the room's like twice as big as it looks," he explained. "I actually didn't even realize this part was here at first yesterday. You can just take over the whole section if you want. There's a pretty nice couch in there. I don't mind the couch actually if you'd prefer -"

"No it's fine," Ava said. "I'd actually prefer to just use the couch." She set down her backpack and sat down, Peter sitting down on the opposite end of the couch.

There was a silence, before, "Sorry if this sounds rude but I have literally no idea who you are other than your name. Who are you exactly?" Peter forced a smile after the words tumbled out.

Ava smiled thinly in response. "Oh, uh, that's fine. I, uh," she thought for a moment, trying to figure out how to best explain her situation. "Sorry, it's kinda complicated, I'm not sure how to start," she laughed awkwardly.

Peter's eyes widened. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to -"

"No, it's fine," she said, waving her hand to cut him off. "I guess, long story short, I live with the Avengers?"

Peter's mouth fell open, but he quickly closed it. "Wait, really?" Ava nodded. "That's so cool. Where are you from? I noticed you kinda have an accent so I was curious…" he trailed off.

Ava was a bit surprised he'd noticed. She sometimes forgot that her accent wasn't quite American. She had never made a huge effort to hide it, but living with the Avengers had made it fade away. Once again, she didn't really know where to start. "I lived in…uh, well actually this part is really complicated. Um…have you heard of HYDRA?"

Peter blinked a few times. "Like the Nazi organization that Captain America fought during World War two? And there was like that big thing in D.C. with SHIELD and stuff a few years ago, right?"

Ava nodded. "Yeah, so they sort of took me when I was little and I lived in one of their labs in Eastern Europe for most of my life. That's where these came from." She unfolded one of her wings slightly.

Peter nodded slowly, taking the news better than Ava had expected. "Oh, uh, okay." He looked a bit overwhelmed but otherwise fairly okay.

"How old are you?" Ava asked, testing out her conversation skills. "Just curious."

"I'll be fifteen in August," he replied a bit defensively, as if expecting her to argue. Ava felt her heart jump a bit. He was practically the same age as her. "How about you?"

"Same, I'll be fifteen in June," she said, and noticed Peter relax at the news.

"Oh, nice," Peter said. "Do you live in New York with the Avengers? What school do you go to?"

"I actually live at the Avengers compound upstate," she replied. "I'm homeschooled."

Peter's eyes widened. "That's so cool. I live in Queens and go to Midtown High School. Do you like homeschool? My best friend was homeschooled for a few years in elementary school and he hated it."

Ava laughed softly. "Yeah. I've never really been around a lot of people my age so just the idea of real school is kinda intimidating."

Is this what normal teenagers did all the time? Ava, though she didn't say it, had actually never met someone her age before. Talking to Peter was the first time she'd ever conversed with another teenager. It also distracted her from the anxiety inducing thoughts about the Avengers that occurred every time she slowed down long enough to think about it.

Peter glanced back towards the door. "Speaking of school…I actually have some homework I gotta do, so…" he trailed off uncomfortably. "Nice to meet you, I guess."

"Yeah, same," Ava replied. After he left, she felt a knot of tension in her chest from meeting a new person loosen. She rummaged in her backpack to see what else Nat had left for her. A mystery-thriller book she'd never seen before and her phone lay at the bottom. Nat had really thought of everything.

She checked her phone, replying to a few messages from Kat asking what had happened. Apparently Vision had called Tony, who'd called Pepper to come stay with them. While the kids didn't know Pepper too well, Ava knew she was a fantastic woman.

A text from Happy popped up on her phone. Want Chinese for dinner? She replied with a thumbs up emoji.

While waiting for dinner, she pulled out the book from Nat and started reading. The plot was good, but not great. She considered starting a movie instead.

A half hour later, Happy knocked on the door to the room. "I have food!" he called. Ava got up to answer but heard Peter get there first.

"Oh great, I'm so hungry," Peter said, grabbing a few boxes.

"Please," Happy said, shifting the weight of the four bags of takeout, "just take all of these. I already took my food out."

Ava sighed in relief. Guessing from the sheer amount of food Happy handed Peter, she assumed that he also had somewhat of an enhanced metabolism.

"I wasn't sure what you liked, or how much to get, so I just erred on the side of very-enhanced-metabolism and got pretty much everything."

"Thanks, Happy," Ava said as the door closed behind him.

She grabbed two of the four bags and peered inside. Peter looked in his. "You care what food you get?" he asked.

"No, not really," she said. "If you don't mind, I'll just take these two."

Peter gave her a thumbs up and carried his food over to the desk, where his notebooks and pencils were spread out. He slid some stuff over to make room, and sat down to eat.

She brought her food over to the other section of the room, and sat down on the couch again. Her stomach growled loudly, as if saying, "Well, get on with it!"

She opened a box of chow mein and practically inhaled it. She hadn't realized how hungry she'd been. As she ate, she grabbed the remote and started flipping through the channels on the TV, pausing on a cheesy superhero cartoon that Ben liked. As she hadn't seen many better options, she settled in and started watching.

It was ridiculous, and so inaccurate to reality it was almost painful. But it served its purpose, distracting her just long enough to fall asleep without worrying about the Accords.

AN: I apologize if the chapter breaks are seeming awkward, I had this all typed up on a doc with no plans for how to split it up yet. Also this first Ava and Peter interaction isn't great, sorry.
