James and Regulus were enjoying their first mini holiday together. They'd had a lovely dinner overlooking the loch as they watched the sunset before taking a walk along the shore. It was such a lovely night and Regulus was having the best time. He was, however, amazed that James had been on his best behaviour. Maybe it was the absence of his idiotic brother but James had yet to pull any childish pranks. He almost wished he would because the polite, romantic James that had come on holiday was– well he was nice but Regulus did sometimes find himself wondering if it was someone impersonating James using Polyjuice Potion. Regulus looked up at the sky and noticed that hardly any stars could be seen now. A thick blanket of dark clouds had covered most of the sky as they had walked along the beach, apart from a small break through which the waxing crescent moon could be glimpsed. There was the smell of rain in the air.

"We're quite far from our lodge and it looks like it might be about to start raining," Regulus said with another glance up at the sky. "I think we should head back. We've almost reached the campsite." He pointed ahead towards the few lights that could be seen twinkling through the trees from the campsite."

"We are wizards, you know," James said and even though it was too dark to properly make out the expression on James's face, Regulus just knew that he was smirking at him. "We can just Apparate back."

They made their way up a little path that led up to the road but instead of turning back towards the lodges James continued along the road that led to the nearest campsite. They reached the campsite as they felt the first few drops of rain.

"I told you it was going to rain," Regulus said, as he and James turned around to head back towards the lodge.

"A wee bit of rain won't hurt us," James replied as the rain got heavier and the first rumble of thunder started.

They weren't far from the little path that led to the loch side when a loud crack of thunder and a flash of lightning lit up the sky, followed by another sound.

"Did you hear that?" Regulus asked James.

"It sounded like a scream. Probably just someone getting a fright. That was a loud clap of thunder." James shrugged, showing little interest in the sound because he had spotted something during that flash of lightning. In the grassy field adjacent to the road at the bottom of a little hill was the biggest muddy puddle.

Holding tight to Regulus's hand James turned on the spot and Apparated them both a few feet into the muddy puddle. Caught off guard at the sudden Apparition, Regulus stumbled as they reappeared, slipped and landed on his bottom sitting in the muddy puddle, much to James's delight as he roared with laughter.

"For five minutes…could you not be yourself? For five minutes!" Regulus grumbled getting up and grabbing a large handful of mud from the puddle threw it at James, hitting him square in the face so that mud dripped down his face and neck and onto his T-shirt. Now it was Regulus's turn to laugh. You didn't grow up with Sirius without learning how to get your own back.

James blinked several times, stunned before he too grabbed a large handful of mud and launched It at Regulus, who prepared for James's retaliation, ducked and avoided the large glob of mud that came his way. He quickly grabbed another handful and tossed it at James, splatting him in the side of his head this time, mud sticking to James's messy black hair. But James already had another handful of mud and this time Regulus did not duck fast enough. SPLAT. He received a face full of mud.

"Oh, you're in danger now, Jamesy," Regulus laughed, as he reached down for another handful of mud.

"I'm not in danger. I am the danger."

SPLAT!

Regulus hit his target again.

SPLAT!

James caught Regulus in the chest this time.

SPLAT!

SPLAT!

SPLAT!

SPLAT!

They hit each other over and over and over again. They didn't even notice the thunderstorm ending or that the rain had eased slightly now. They didn't notice another couple coming up the path from the loch and walking along the road past the grassy field they were having the mud fight in. They were both dripping wet, extremely muddy and just having a good time. James launched another handful of mud at Regulus who ducked.

SPLAT!

James's handful of mud found a target. It just wasn't the right target.

"Oh, Merlin's beard! I'm so sorry," James said, rushing over to the fence separating them from the road and skidding to halt in front of them, splattering their robes with more mud. "Oh, sorry, sorry!"

The younger of the two men burst out laughing.

"Well, we were already soaked from the thunderstorm," he said good naturedly. "What's a little mud?" Wiping the mud out his face, his companion joined in the laughter.

"Please let me clean that up for you," James insisted, pulling his wand out and vanishing the mud from their robes.

"Thank you. No harm done. Enjoy your night," the first man said before he turned on the spot and he and his companion vanished into thin air.

"I suppose we should clean up too," James said, looking at Regulus. "Although at this point, I think a shower might actually be easier."

"Agreed." Regulus laughed.

James took his hand and they apparated back to their lodge to clean up. By the time they had finished getting themselves clean in the shower the bathroom was decidedly less clean. There was a trail of mud from the living area into the bathroom. Muddy clothes were scattered across the bathroom floor. There was mud in the sink, on the toilet seat and even up the bathroom walls and the bathroom floor was much closer to resembling a bog than a bathroom floor but at least they were clean. Exhausted after cleaning up the mess in the bathroom they collapsed into bed and slept late the next day.

It was lunch time before they awoke and they decided to Apparate to the Leaky Cauldron for some lunch. The Leaky Cauldron was surprisingly quiet except for a group of four people in the far corner. One of whom was someone very familiar…
